As we prepare for San Diego Comic-Con 2025, and although we have shifted to streaming service science fiction series, TeamWHR is pleased to announce that broadcast television is returning to original series. This subsequent to no new cable or network series on broadcast television for two years.

Of interest, such series dominated broadcast television for three decades, many of which we have reported on since 2008 when this website was created to analyze and review over thirty television programs here and on our archived websites listed on the right sidebar.

San Diego Convention Center - 800

Over and above the more than one hundred (103) entertainment conventions, and hundreds of interviews across over thirty websites, we also analyzed fictional dramas such as Mayans MC and Body of Proof because science fiction celebrities starred in them. We also analyzed many dozens of movies at our dedicated Movie Magic website until deciding to post films and TCM Film Festival movie analysis here to focus solely on conventions, scripted series and interviews for each of the same.

The science fiction series we started with was Stargate at conventions subsequent to working with MGM Studios on their official website. In 2009 WormholeRiders News Agency we expanded our coverage analyzing episodes of Agents of Shield, Alcatraz, Alphas, Being Human, Caprica, Chuck, Continuum, Dark Matter, Day of the Dead, Debris, Defiance, Destination Truth, Dracula, Eureka, Falling Skies, Flashforward, Fringe, Haven, Helix, Hollywood Treasure, Killjoys, La Brea, Primeval New World, Revolution, Sanctuary, Stargate, Supernatural, Terra Nova, The Event, The Expanse, The Neighbors, Treadstone, Vampire Diaries, Van Helsing, V Series, and Warehouse 13.

    The Back Story:

    Comcast NBC Universal Corporation

When the latest consolidation of the entertainment industry began in 2017 with the Comcast NBC Universal merger, we ceased opening dedicated websites for each new series and began moving popular series posts from thousands published over the past seventeen years to our main blog here.

The entertainment industry consolidation has continued unabated sometimes with less than desired results. Facing significant financial losses, particularly in California and Canada where many programs are produced, the top thirty firms in the industry have lost 540 billion in value resulting in tens of thousands of job losses that continued with the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike where 17,000 losses were reported in California. Additionally recent direct losses of over six (6) billion dollars on projects since the strike have been reported. This was caused by several factors including a failure to produce series acceptable to audiences, the labor strike, and a shift in audience viewing habits towards streaming services. All of these factors led to reduced broadcast television science fiction production levels.

The good news is that the trend for science fiction scripted series on broadcast television is beginning a modest comeback this year with the renewal of The Ark for a third season, set to return to SYFY in 2026. 2025 dovetailed this news with new series that debuted this year. As a result of studios and networks rehiring creative talent instead of misguided executive’s dictating what programs and series will be created, more good news is expected with streaming services producing the lions share of scripted science fiction programs.

Best of all, as delineated below, of the three new broadcast network science fiction scripted series, one is featured in a fabulous panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2025 that begins on July 25, 2025!

    Alien: Earth:

    Alien Earth poster

Alien: Earth is a fantastic new scripted science fiction (prequel) series based on the original 1979 Alien movie. Created by Noah Hawley for FX Networks / Hulu, Alien: Earth stars Sydney Chandler as Wendy, Alex Lawther as CJ, Timothy Olyphant as Kirsh, Essie Davis as Dame Silvia, Samuel Blenkin as Boy Kavalier, Kit Young as Tootles, Adarsh Gourav as Slightly, Babou Ceesay as Morrow and a large supporting cast.

The prequel series takes place in the year 2120, two years before the events of the original film Alien film that took place in the year 2122. Alien: Earth is set some 22 years before Alien: Romulus (2024) which was set in 2142, 59 years before Aliens (1986) and 59 years before Alien 3 (1992) which took place in the year 2179.

Perhaps a disappointment to franchise admirers, it has been confirmed by Hawley that the events which took place in the prequel movies Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017) will be ignored. This has raised questions about the Alien franchise canon when a spaceship crash lands on Earth in 2120 just prior to the events that transpired in the original Alien movie.

Nevertheless, we here at TeamWHR are excited about Alien: Earth as a series, and are eagerly looking forward to the panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, the special Alien Earth Wreckage exhibit at the convention, and the exiting series broadcast premiere August 12, 2025!

    Nautilus:

Nautilus creator James Dormer chose Village Roadshow Studios for filming the series in Oxenford, Queensland, Australia for AMC in the United States. The series is a prequel to the famous Walt Disney movie 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954). The prequel is based on the 1869 novel by Jules Verne that explores the back story of the infamous Captain Nemo originally portrayed by acting legend James Mason.

Nautilus features a huge ensemble main cast starring Shazad Latif as the younger version of Captain Nemo, Georgia Flood as Humility Lucas, Céline Menville as Loti, Luke Arnold as Captain Billy Millais, Jacob Collins-Levy as Youngblood, Kayden Price as Blaster, Benedict Hardie as Edward Cuff, Arlo Green as Turan, Tyrone Ngatai as Kai, Ling Cooper Tang as Suyin, Pacharo Mzembe as Boniface Adamu, Ashan Kumar as Ranbir Lodhari, Damien Garvey as Director Crawley, Cameron Cuffe as Algernon Pitt, and Andrew Shaw as Jiacomo.

The episodes are well produced with practical as well as computer generated special effects making the story quite enjoyable. The remote areas of Australia also adds to the realism of this origin story about Captain Nemo and his legendary submarine, the Nautilus.

In the series we learn that Captain Nemo is an Indian prince robbed of his family birthright who was made a prisoner of the infamous East India Company that has stolen his ideas, property and forced to build the Nautilus or face death.

Bent on revenge against the corrupt United Kingdom East India Company, young Captain Nemo escapes the prison, steals the Nautilus from the East India Company (EIC) and sets sail with a diverse crew on board.

The theft of the awesome first of it’s kind high technology submarine angers EIC Director  Crawley and his aide who vow to hunt down Captain Nemo to take back the Nautilus.

Subsequent to escaping, Captain Nemo and his band of heroes adventures find our heroes battling the evil East India Company Dreadnought battleship while viewers revel in the discovery of fabulous underwater worlds!

The Librarians: The Next Chapter creators are John Rogers and show runner Dean Devlin featured on the TNT Network. Devlin is well known for Stargate (1994) as well as science fiction movies and television series including Independence Day (1996), The Triangle (2005) miniseries, The Librarians (original movies / series) and Leverage Redemption for a total of over 40 other beloved highly successful efforts including The Ark.

The Librarians: The Next Chapter represents the third true scripted science fiction series to be released on broadcast television in 2025. Currently running on TNT Networks, the series is produced by Electric Entertainment which offers the series on their streaming service, available commercial free for paid subscribers.

This superb series is nearing the end of it’s first season twelve episode run representing a move by Warner Brothers Discovery (WBD) that echoes their recent announcement to return creative control to content producers subsequent to the merger of the conglomerate now producing outstanding desirable results.

We here at WormholeRiders News Agency applaud WBD for making this move that has resulted in rehiring content creators in a bottoms up instead of top down management style. The Librarians: The Next Chapter is a continuation of The Librarians movies and television series that were originally broadcast on the now defunct television broadcast network The CW. Once the home of many science fiction and teen drama shows, CW is now a streaming service under the Nexstar Media Group jointly owned by WBD and Paramount Global.

The Librarians: The Next Chapter opened with the return of beloved Christian Kane as the legendary Jacob Stone from the popular 2014 to 2018 Librarians series. Also starring is Jessica Green as Charlie Cornwall. Fans will recall Ms. Green from the four season successful series The Outpost (2018-2021) was executive produced by Mr. Devlin. Featuring a large ensemble cast that includes Callum McGowan as Vikram Chamberlain, Olivia Morris as Lysa Pascal, Bluey Robinson as Conner Green, Caroline Loncq as Elaine Astolat, Adnan Haskovic as General Bogdan Gregor, admirers of The Ark have been delighted to see Paul Leonard Murray as Dr. Frederic Stanaris, Pavle Jerinic as Petar Blagojevic, and Jadran Malkovich as Guy Leroy in guest starring roles.

The series features Rachel Olschan and Noah Wyle as Executive Producers. Viewers will recall Wyle from the original 2004 movie that kicked off the franchise and Olschan from The Ark. Additionally viewers have enjoyed the writing of The Ark’s Rebecca Rosenberg and the directing of Sandra Mitrovic, Milan Todorovic, and Orsi Nagypal, all featured Directors from The Ark.

The continuation series features time travel from a past Librarian. Returning to what used to be his castle, Vikram Chamberlain discovers it is now a a museum, which in turn causes him to accidentally unleash magic across the world. The Librarians: The Next Chapter is a popular series that we enjoy each week and we are pleased with the fact that this superb science series has already been renewed for a second season!

Hello my fellow San Diego Comic-Con fans,

    San Diego Comic Con Logo

We are less than two weeks away from this year’s convention. Every year, I get excited to see what Hollywood and the pop culture world have in store for us at the ultimate event. Hordes of comic book fans, pop culture enthusiasts, anime lovers, and gamers flock to San Diego every July to make their pilgrimage to this mecca. I have been attending San Diego Comic-Con since 2012, and each year, I look forward to participating; it is always the highlight of my summer vacation.

The schedule for this year’s convention is almost finalized; we need to see what Sunday brings. One exciting surprise that fans (me included) are looking forward to is George Lucas’ upcoming appearance, his first time attending. He will be there to promote the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.

George Lucas‘ appearance will occur in a panel on Sunday July 27, 2025 in Hall H with Guillermo del Toro (RealGDT), and award winning Doug Chiang to discuss the power of illustrated storytelling.

2025-07-27 Lucas Museum of Narrative Art panel

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art panel will be moderated by the legendary Queen Latifah where Mr Lucas will share a sneak peek of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. I can already imagine a huge line forming outside the famous San Diego Comic-Con Hall H for this exciting panel.

The new museum is being built by George Lucas and his wife, Mellody Hobson. The finished product is designed to feature and highlight all forms of visual storytelling – from photography and sculpture to comic art and performance arts.

Some of the fantastic artists featured in the Lucas Museum are Diego Rivera, Jack Kirby, and Carrie Mae Weems. It also acquired the Separate Cinema Archive, which includes posters, lobby cards, and other artifacts from the history of African American cinema from 1904 to the present. Some of those incredible artists are Paul Robeson, Duke Ellington, and Sidney Poitier.

Currently completing construction in Exposition Park, Los Angeles, the new museum is scheduled to open in 2026. This kind of museum is a much needed addition to spotlight the entertainment industries narrative arts efforts in the past and the future. I am happy that we will see this type of creative art celebrated and promoted by a filmmaker whose legacy speaks for itself.

Comic-Con Museum’s premiere attraction this year will be an auction of Star Wars memorabilia, Echoes From the Galaxy, which is organized by Julien’s Auction House in association with TCM and takes place at the museum on Sunday, July 27th.

I believe the auction will raise a significant amount of money, but it will also give dedicated Star Wars fans the chance to own a piece of their favorite franchise. How amazing would it be to own a part of one of the most beloved film series of all time?

The Comic-Con Museum is a vital part of the Convention and has displayed incredible exhibits over the years. The Museum operates year-round and is situated in Balboa Park, San Diego. Focusing on comics and popular arts, it offers the opportunity to get up close and personal with art through featured exhibits and events from Comic-Con. In past years, exhibits have featured Stan Lee, Batman, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, and Pac-Man.

In the past the museum hosted “Excelsior! The Life and Legacy of Stan Lee – Interviews with Michael Uslan and David Uslan” included below. The exhibit included artifacts ranging from the origins of the comics to the movies and everything in between. If you get the chance to visit the museum, you should. It provides a much more intimate look at what Comic-Con International is all about and the fantastic art that can be seen. Additionally, it’s a great way to avoid the crowds and enjoy a more personalized experience at the convention.

Hosted by Felicia Day, onboard, fans can expect terrific themed parties, exclusive screenings, Q&A sessions with special guests, and much more. What an exciting time to be part of that fan base! I have not gone on the cruise myself, but it sounds like it will be a wonderful experience!

    SDCC Malaga:

For the first time, Comic-Con International will be going overseas! San Diego Comic-Con Málaga will take place at the Palacio de Ferias y Congresos from September 25 to 28, 2025. This event will feature a mix of international and local pop culture, including panels, exhibits, and special guests.

I am happy to see Comic-Con expanding to different countries. I hope we get to see more countries added to the list in the future.

With all the new announcements for this year’s Comic-Con International, I do not doubt that the future of Comic-Con in San Diego will continue to expand and that we will see it soar to new heights in the years to come. Comic-Con is such an integral part of the creative arts, keeping the medium alive and thriving. We include the SDCC Theme below for your enjoyment.

In closing for now, It is always a pleasure to see what Comic-Con International has to offer each year, as well as the amazing treats that fans can immerse themselves in. As the convention draws closer, prepare yourself for the whirlwind of comics, movies, art, pop culture, toys, figures, and television that this amazing convention has to offer. See you there!

The Last Of Us Lauded – Superb Series Sweeps The World!

The Last of Us banner - 640

    Hello Dystopian Drama Lovers,

    The Last of Us poster

The Last of Us series on HBO represents a masterpiece of conversion from video game to a scripted series that superbly brings the action of the game to viewers who may have never played the game. Our grade for the first two seasons is a solid A+ for converting game play action, drama, and sheer excitement to a superb science fiction series!

Created by Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, the HBO series is based on is a 2013 action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Entertainment for the Playstation gaming console. The Last of Us Part One sold over twenty million units on the Sony Playstation platform and more when the game was ported to the Windows 10 platform in 2023. Despite relatively poor sales on the Windows platform (the game was never allowed by Sony to be on the X-Box). With the release of The Last of Us Part Two game, a total of over thirty seven million units have been sold to date for the Playstation.

In the game Players control a primary character named Joel, an individual escorting a teenage girl named Ellie exactly like the series. Through the post-apocalyptic landscape of the United States that is devastated by a mutated fungus turning its victims into grotesque creatures from a real life fungal virus known as Cordyceps that mutates from an insect disease jumping to infect human hosts.

The conversion of The Last of Us (TLOU) to a streaming series is an ongoing effort of bringing popular video games to streaming series and movies. Tracing gaming roots to computer video game success as in the 1990’s, two examples are Wing Commander (1999) and Doom (2005) both were released as movies subsequent to computer video game mania in the last decade of the twentieth century. Joined by Silo on Apple TV in 2023 based upon a trilogy of books, and Fallout on Prime Video in 2024 based on the wildly popular video game. TLOU represents a trend for streaming series enjoyed by the general public worldwide.

The Last Of Us - Anna Torv as Tess

Originally, WormholeRiders News Agency watched season one of TLOU because it featured two celebrities that we have admired for many years, Anna Torv as Theresa ‘Tess’ Servopoulos and Pedro Pascal as Joel Miller. We soon enjoyed the entire main cast of Bella Ramsey as Ellie Williams, Gabriel Luna as Tommy Miller, Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Rutina Wesley as Maria Miller, Catherine O’Hara as Gail Lynden, Kaitlyn Dever as Abby Anderson, Maurice Dean Wint as a cult priest, Kendra Anderson as The Priestess, Jeffrey Pierce as Perry, Melanie Lynskey as Kathleen Coghlan, Lamar Johnson as Henry Burrell, Storm Reid as Riley Abel, and Jeffrey Wright as Issac Dixon, leader of the Washington Liberation Front (WLF). Additionally, both seasons feature a fine supporting cast, crews and creators across the first two season’s story arc.

Season one of TLOU chronicles the journey of Ellie and Joel twenty years after the viral outbreak as they struggle to survive the Cordyceps infection that has decimated the world. Traveling from the ruins of Boston, then Kansas City, Joel is seeking his brother Tommy while protecting Ellie during their journey. Along the way viewers learned that Ellie is immune to the disease which leads to her being captured by a group of survivors known as Fireflies.

During the ending of TLOU season 1, Joel chooses to save Ellie from a Salt Lake City hospital where she is being held captive. Here the doctor, Abby’s father we learn later, planned to perform surgery on Ellie that would have killed her in order to create a cure for the Cordyceps infection sweeping the world. Joel kills everyone in the hospital to save Ellie who was unconscious during the massacre.

Unfortunately, Joel lies to Ellie about what happened at the Salt Lake City hospital, claiming that the Fireflies, a revolutionary militia group in the series that opposes the authoritarian government organization known as FEDRA (Federal Disaster Response Agency) stopped looking for a cure. FEDRA a takeoff on the real world FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency).

After Joel tells Ellie after her rescue from the Fireflies that they had stopped looking for a cure, they leave Salt Lake City. This development sets up a destructive dynamic in the relationship between Ellie and Joel that will erupt with catastrophic consequences in season two.

The Last Of Us Season Two:

The Last of Us S2x01 Ellie and Dina head out on patrol

The second successful season is based on the characters from season one with some changes to game character actions. However, the series emotional intimacy, the consequences of human moral ambiguity and life in a post-apocalyptic society are the foundation making TLOU an enjoyably, intense story.

Season two begins with episode one “Future Days” where we find the TLOU survivors five years later living near Jackson Hole Wyoming. Here the epidemic survivors have been able to effectively barricade the city of Jackson living somewhat normal lives amid the dystopian chaos. Here we find Joel’s brother, Tommy, as a member of the Jackson council. The mostly happy survivors not infected by the Cordyceps virus who have scavenged food supplies including copious amounts of whiskey and wine from the surrounding communities that lubricates their life in the city.

Referred to generally as the city of Jackson in the series, the inhabitants have created a mostly pleasant community replete with electricity, hunting, farming and family developments. The Jackson city council trains and deploys Jackson citizens to patrol the surrounding environment searching for other survivors as well killing any as infected Cordyceps victims that threaten their city. However, two things happen; First the city is attacked by the fungal monsters, and two; it is noticeable that Ellie is estranged and distant from Joel. In the process, Ellie befriends a woman named Dina who become best friends and lovers.

Meanwhile, unknown to Ellie and Joel, Abby has vowed to hunt down and kill Joel for the murder of her father. Abby and her gang find and lure Joel to a mountain lodge while he was on patrol outside Jackson in the third episode “The Path”. Despite being saved by Joel, Abby vows that when she finds and kills Joel, it will be as slowly as possible as punishment for her father’s murder.

Ellie is also captured by Abby and her minions, witnessing when Abby stabs Joel to death after whacking him with a golf club. In the TLOU2 game, Joel is also killed in The Last of Us Part Two by Abby. However, there is a major difference from the game story arc in that Tommy was the witness to Joel’s execution setting out to follow Abby to Seattle, not Ellie. In this series scene, Abby does not immediately connect Ellie as the person who is immune from the fungal epidemic that killed her father.

    video

The change of Ellie being the witness elevates Tommy to major character status when Ellie loses a vote in the Jackson council to establish a posse to hunt down Abby for killing Joel. Ellie and her best friend Dina set out to follow Abby and exact revenge. We learn later that Tommy and Jesse following them cross country to Seattle Washington.

Flashbacks are eloquently employed to fill what has happened between Joel and Ellie since they arrived in Jackson Wyoming not far from Jackson Hole in the real life Teton county area.

The Last of Us Joel and Ellie flasback to happier times

Significantly, the sixth episode “The Price” features Joel and Ellie celebrating her sixteenth birthday as a flashback. In the episode viewers flashback to a museum for astronauts located in Wyoming at the Museum of Science and History that is featured as a location featured in TLOU2 video game. In the series the abandoned museum is where Joel Miller takes Ellie as a surprise for her sixteenth birthday. The museum has been recreated for the series as the flashback Ellie recalls.

The Last of Us Joe;l flasback to happier times

When Joel takes her to see an Apollo space craft that she sits in, the flashback features good times between the two main characters where Joel has restored a guitar that he made for Ellie before Ellie confronts Joel about what happened at the hospital in Salt Lake City. Eventually Joel breaks down in tears admitting to Ellie that he murdered Abby’s father in order to save Ellie from being butchered as an ingredient for the Cordyceps infection fungal virus cure. Ellie states that she will try to forgive Joel with tears again welling up in his eyes.

Subsequent to Ellie and Dina leaving Jackson to track down Abby, we later learn that Tommy and Jesse decided to follow and protect them. Viewers also learn that Dina is pregnant with Jesse’s child. Along the way viewers learn about a religious extremist group known as the Seraphites, a primitivism cult that lives on an island in the Seattle Washington area.

Living without technology, the Seraphites instead use knives, bows and arrows as weapons. The Seraphites group is filled with obsessed cultists led by priest perfectly portrayed by Maurice Dean Wint. The cult followers believe that Cordyceps is God’s retribution to humanity for their sins. The Seraphites are observed torturing and often murdering anyone that strays from what they deem as the proper path unless they swear allegiance to the Seraphite cause. Known as Scars, this is a reference to religious fanatics such as Islamic Terrorists that plague the real world today.

The Last of Us S2x07 Isaac predicts death in Seattle

In the Seattle area during season two, viewers also meet The Washington Liberation Front (WLF) known as ‘Wolves’ in the Seattle area in episode four named “Day One”. The Wolves are sworn enemies of the Seraphite’s often hunting them down to protect their base located at Lumen Field, formerly known as Seahawks Stadium (2002–2004), Qwest Field (2004–2011), CenturyLink Field (2011–2020).

In the TLOU2 game once in Seattle, Ellie and Dina find a grisly trail of dead bodies that Tommy left in his wake, tortured and interrogated for information that reflected a dark side of Tommy’s character. In the series second season, Tommy and Jesse wisely decide to follow Ellie and Dina. This yields results that ultimately end up saving both the girls lives in the city overrun by the WLF and the sickening Seraphites.

In the TLOU season two series finale “Convergence” Ellie, Dina, Tommy and Jesse are reunited in Seattle. Internalizing the consequences of staying in Seattle, Tommy, Ellie, Jesse and Dina decide to return to Jackson Wyoming, but only after Ellie decides to kill Abby.

However, before they could do so, Abby caught Ellie, killed Jesse, and shot Tommy in the head on “Day Three” in Seattle during the seventh episode “Convergence”. Abby did not share Ellie and Tommy’s sentiments and has no intention of allowing Ellie to obtain her revenge for Joel’s death.

The Last of Us S2x07 Abby at Lumen Field on Day One

In TLOU2 game play, it is revealed that Tommy survived his head shot by Abby, but not without permanent scars both to his mental health and physical body. The final episode sequence depicts Jesse dead, Tommy shot with Abby firing on Ellie as the screen fades to black with a segue to “Day One” with Abby at the WLF Lumen Field encampment.

The WLF is featured again in the season finale, episode seven “Convergence” when Abby flashes back to “Day One” at Lumen Field.

Questions for TLOU season three to address will likely surround around the following items that need to be resolved:

Will Tommy survive just as he did just like in the TLOU2 game?
Does Ellie survive Abby on Day Three is Seattle? We suspect the gunshot sound is Dina shooting Abby.
We also suspect the sequence is homage to this famous scene in an ending that is similar to the “Who Shot JR” cliffhanger episode “Who Done It” from the famous Dallas television series circa November 21, 1980.

I want to share my experience at the TCM Film Festival in Los Angeles, which took place from April 24 to April 28. This year marked my second unforgettable experience at the event, enhanced by an upgraded pass that made it even more thrilling. I was fortunate enough to book a room at the iconic Hollywood Roosevelt, a historic hotel steeped in celebrity lore, nestled right on the bustling Hollywood Boulevard. The excitement of being surrounded by the vibrant energy of the area and the allure of the hotel’s storied past made my stay truly remarkable.

This year’s festival was a remarkable celebration, marking its 16th anniversary and drawing movie enthusiasts from every corner of the globe. The enchanting theme, “Grand Illusions: Fantastic Worlds on Film,” set the stage for an immersive cinematic experience. Attendees could choose from four tiers of passes: Spotlight, Essential, Classic, and Palace, each offering access to a treasure trove of captivating films. I was thrilled to secure an Essential pass, which provided me with the exciting opportunity to attend the glamorous opening-night red-carpet screening of “The Empire Strikes Back.” This unforgettable evening was graced by a pre-movie interview featuring the legendary George Lucas, conducted by the insightful Ben Mankiewicz, making it a truly memorable night for all.

The lineup of films for this year’s event was wonderfully diverse, highlighting a vibrant array of genres that catered to every cinematic taste. I found myself grappling with the difficult task of selecting which movies to screen, as many of them overlapped in timing, with only a tight fifteen-minute window—or even less—to hustle over to the theater, check in, and join the throng of eager moviegoers lined up outside. Some films garnered a much larger following, creating a palpable buzz that pulsed through the crowd. This meant that I often had to make tough decisions to leave the captivating current screening, urged along with collective excitement, to queue up for the next blockbuster alongside a sea of enthusiastic film lovers. The charm of these festivals lies in the freedom to select films I had already experienced, allowing me to leave the theater without a pang of regret. Knowing the plot’s resolution ahead of time meant that stepping out before the credits rolled was not a loss; instead, it felt like a gentle embrace of nostalgia. I could savor the familiar emotions and vivid recollections evoked by the cinematic journey, confident that I had not missed anything significant.

During the exhilarating four-day event, I immersed myself in a total of nine films, a feat that proved to be quite a challenge this year. The lineup was a nostalgic dream, featuring many of my all-time favorite movies. The opening night was particularly fraught with tough decisions, as the majestic Grauman’s Chinese Theater buzzed with excitement for “Empire Strikes Back.” Yet, just a few blocks away, the historic Egyptian Theater was highlighting another gem—Paul Newman’s brilliant performance in “Hud,” a film that has captured my heart over the years. Driven by a fierce determination not to miss the opportunity, I reluctantly left early from the thrilling space battles of the Empire. I briskly made my way to the Egyptian, eager to experience the unforgettable storytelling of “Hud” on the big screen. Before the screening of “Hud,” the esteemed actor Keith Carradine graced the stage, sharing his profound admiration for the film. He spoke passionately about the remarkable performances delivered by Patricia Neal and Melvyn Douglas, both of whom were honored with Academy Awards for their roles. Keith also paid tribute to the legendary Paul Newman, whose charismatic presence brought unique energy to the production. He highlighted one of my favorite cinematographers, the brilliant James Wong Howe, emphasizing how his masterful black-and-white imagery infused the movie with remarkable depth and nuance, creating a visual tapestry that perfectly complemented the storytelling.

On Day 2 of the festival, I was fortunate enough to attend the Hand and Foot Ceremony for Michelle Pfeiffer. As Michelle made her entrance, accompanied by her renowned husband, David E. Kelley, the crowd buzzed with anticipation, thrilled to witness her moment of recognition immortalized in cement. Dakota Fanning and Elle Fanning, both radiant and enthusiastic, took to the stage to introduce Michelle.

They spoke with heartfelt admiration, reflecting on the memorable experiences they shared while collaborating with her, highlighting not just her talent but also her warmth and generosity. The atmosphere was filled with joy and appreciation, making the event truly special for everyone involved.

After the enchanting ceremony honoring Michelle Pfeiffer, I found myself with about an hour to indulge in some food before queuing up to see the original 1978 film “Superman,” a film starring the late, great Christopher Reeve, alongside the iconic Margot Kidder and the legendary Gene Hackman. The atmosphere in the line was electric, filled with fellow movie enthusiasts radiating excitement. There is something uniquely exhilarating about standing shoulder to shoulder with like-minded fans; the air buzzes with conversations that weave in and out like a vibrant tapestry of shared experiences and enthusiastic opinions. These exchanges not only help pass the time but also deepen the sense of anticipation as we collectively look forward to witnessing the magic of cinema unfold on the big screen.

After Superman wrapped up his exhilarating escapades, I made my way back to the cozy confines of my hotel room, eager for some much-needed nourishment and a few precious moments of respite.

The anticipation of the evening grew as I prepared to head to the vibrant pool area, where a screening of the beloved classic movie “Clueless” awaited. This is one of the many joys of attending the TCM festival.

Their superb schedule features the delightful array of the movie events it hosts, such as charming poolside movies and engaging movie panels that bring film enthusiasts together to enjoy the movies they love.

Last year, the sun-kissed surface of the pool glimmered beneath the stars during the screening of “Footloose,” and this time, with “Clueless,” I was greeted by a kaleidoscope of patrons donning costumes that brought the film’s iconic characters to life.

The atmosphere buzzed with excitement, promising an unforgettable evening under the twinkling night sky. The fantastic Elisa Donovan, who played Amber, was there to discuss making the iconic film and how, even thirty years later, the cast remains friends to this day. Elisa Donovan was openly delighted in seeing fans in costume and praised them for their attention to detail in creating their cosplay creations.

Day 3 provided me with a leisurely period, as the first film on my itinerary was not scheduled to begin until 2:45 p.m. I meandered along Hollywood Boulevard, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere and the iconic sights surrounding me. I strolled down those famous sidewalks, where countless names of legendary stars were etched into the concrete with elegance. Each step brought me closer to the rich tapestry of history, as I admired the intricate designs and the stories behind the illustrious figures immortalized beneath my feet. My first movie of the day was “Back to the Future,” which brought me back to my youth and the enthusiasm I remember from when I first saw that film on a big screen. Bob Gale, Charlie Croughwell, and Dean Cundey were the special guests who regaled us with tales of making that legendary film.

Next on my film agenda was the legendary Steven Spielberg classic “Jaws,” playing at the historic Egyptian Theater. Eagerly departing from “the future,” I rushed to join the lengthy line of fellow movie enthusiasts, my heart racing with anticipation for the thrilling experience that awaited me.

I was lucky enough to grab an aisle seat and settle in with my popcorn and drink in hand. The lovely Lorraine Gary, who portrayed Ellen Brody, was present to discuss making the film and her fondness for Robert Shaw. Her wit made the experience better as she discussed how movie making was mostly foreign to her, being a trained theater actor.

The last movie I watched that night was the legendary science fiction masterpiece “Blade Runner.” a favorite of mine and WormholeRiders News Agency. Fortunately, Blade Runner was showing at the same theater as “Jaws”, so it was going to be relatively easy to shift venues.

As a result I decided to leave early to join the extensive line of fans already queuing up. The version we were queuing up to see was the digitally remastered 2007 version of the film which was excellent.

Sean Young, who portrayed Rachel, was present to discuss the film and share her experience as a 19-year-old actress working with some of the industry’s heavy hitters. The 2007 version was nothing short of spectacular, with its vibrant colors that danced across the screen, breathtaking cinematography by Jordan Cronenweth that captured every intricate detail, and the evocative score by Vangelis that infused each scene with emotional depth. I made it a point to experience this extraordinary film in a theater, relishing the way it was meant to be enjoyed—larger than life, enveloping me in its visual and auditory splendor. With “Blade Runner” ending at midnight, I was tempted to make my way to the Chinese Multiplex to see “Wild at Heart,” but I could not make it. I spoke to some fellow movie fans who attended the screening, and they told me it started an hour late. They did not return to their hotel until well after 3 the next morning!

On the final day of the festival, I had three films I was eager to see. However, two of them unfortunately overlapped in schedule so I made a decision on which of the excellent movies to see.

After much deliberation, I decided to watch “Apocalypse Now” on the massive screen instead of “Sunset Boulevard.” I have attended many screenings of “Sunset Boulevard” on the big screen before making the choice a bit easier.

Since I had never seen “Apocalypse Now” in a theater setting, the closest I had gotten was watching it on my own 4K 65-inch screen at home. Watchinmg the big screen version a real treat!

Director Antoine Fuqua and film noir expert historian Eddie Muller were there to chat about how impactful and utterly life-changing “Apocalypse Now” was to both. For me, the 70mm print of the original theatrical release version, courtesy of the George Eastman Museum from Martin Scorsese‘s collection, made the experience even more incredible, given Scorsese’s reputation as a champion for restoring and archiving the history of film.

The final film of the festival for me was the iconic masterpiece directed by Michael Mann, “Heat.” The atmosphere in the room was electric as both Mann and the legendary Al Pacino took the stage. Ben Mankiewicz, with his engaging charm, posed a fascinating question: how had two of the most celebrated actors of their generation, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, finally come together for a film? Listening to their insights was a profound experience, as they reminisced about the painstaking craft of filmmaking and the unforgettable shoot-out scene that erupted amidst the bustling streets of Los Angeles—a moment etched in cinematic history.

The film boasted a star-studded cast that left my mind racing with excitement, especially when I thought of the talented character actors who brought depth to the story. I could not help but reflect on the extraordinary Val Kilmer, whose powerful presence on screen had captivated audiences before his heartbreaking passing on April 1st. It was a poignant moment, filled with nostalgia for his talents, as I absorbed the richness of this cinematic event.

As I reflect on the TCM Film Festival 2025, I am filled with excitement and nostalgia. For anyone who cherishes the art of cinema and revels in the communal experience of watching films with fellow enthusiasts, I wholeheartedly encourage you to secure a pass for next year’s event. Over the past two years, attending this extraordinary festival has become a highlight of my year, weaving a tapestry of unforgettable moments. There is something indescribably joyous about being surrounded by kindred spirits—fellow cinephiles who share the same passion for storytelling on the big screen, all of us united in our love for film.

To encapsulate the essence of this experience, I am reminded of Gloria Swanson’s portrayal of Norma Desmond’s who’s poignant words from the climactic final scene of “Sunset Boulevard.” “You see, this is my life, it always will be. There is nothing else, just us and the cameras, and those wonderful people out there in the dark.” These words resonate deeply as I immerse myself in the magic of the festival, where each screening draws us closer together in a shared adventure through the lens of cinema!

Over the course of the first season we learned that our heroes are Lumon employees who voluntarily have undergone a “Severance” procedure that surgically divides their memories between their work and personal lives. This is accomplished using a computer chip implanted in their brains.

This technology is not dissimilar to technology being developed and utilized in contemporary times to help handicapped individuals. However, in “Severance” the extent of the control of their memories goes far beyond what science is capable of today.

The adventures of our heroes are mixed with rewards provided by Lumon setting up the third season of this fabulous science fiction series. The Saturn Awards, a prestigious celebration of genre cinema, first graced the entertainment world in 1972, spotlighting the captivating realms of science fiction, fantasy, and horror films.

Over the years, this iconic ceremony has broadened its scope to embrace the magic of television storytelling. In a heartfelt tribute to the late Lance Reddick, the awards introduced in 2024 the inaugural Lance Reddick Legacy Award, honoring Keanu Reeves for his outstanding performances in the beloved John Wick franchise. This accolade embodies a profound appreciation for an actor’s talent and the unforgettable characters they bring to life on screen.

Lance Reddick, a cherished figure within the science fiction community, garnered acclaim for his remarkable role in one of my all-time favorite series, Fringe. His untimely passing in March 2023 left a void in the hearts of fans, yet his enduring legacy will be celebrated through this special award in perpetuity.

Dean Devlin of Electric Entertainment, whose series The Ark earned a nomination, aptly described the Saturn Awards as “a great celebration of nerds cheering on nerd stuff.”

As an admirer of Mr. Devlin’s many contributions to genre entertainment over the past thirty years which include Stargate and Independence Day in then 1990’s, I wholeheartedly resonate with his sentiment!

As devoted science fiction fantasy drama fans, we revel in honoring our favorite narratives and characters, and this year, the highly anticipated Godzilla Minus One has undoubtedly secured its place on our list of cherished highlights.

Godzilla Minus One Director Takashi Yamazaki
Image courtesy Takashi Yamazaki on X

Godzilla Minus One is not only a genre film but also sets itself aside as a lesson in filmmaking. As I mentioned, what the director, Takashi Yamazaki, did regarding special effects is astonishing.

Unlike other recent Godzilla movies that are so CGI-heavy that they take you out of the fantasy, Minus One managed to strike a perfect balance. It utilized CGI to enhance the storytelling and create a visually stunning experience without overshadowing the narrative or the iconic monster. This balance is a testament to the film’s quality and a reason for us, as fans, to be reassured about the franchise’s future, knowing it is in good hands.

    Godzilla Minus One Rampage

In this latest interpretation of Godzilla, the narrative strategically emphasizes the deeply woven human stories that resonate throughout the film. The creature, a looming shadow of fear, is not always depicted in its monstrous form but instead manifested through the terror and awareness of its impending presence. The filmmakers masterfully crafted a narrative that operates on multiple levels, disguising itself as a poignant commentary on political and social issues. Within this framework, Godzilla emerges as a powerful symbol of humanity’s hubris, a tangible representation of the chaos and destruction that ensues when conflict ravages a nation. The film unfolds as a chilling reflection on the aftermath of war, illustrating how its consequences give rise to a monstrous reality that lurks beneath the surface. Let us delve into the rich political and social themes “Minus One” explores, revealing how they intricately enhance the film’s overall narrative depth.

    Godzilla Minus One Destruction

What I find captivating about the film is its intricate weaving of Japanese cultural elements, vividly illustrating how the world has grown increasingly complicated. The filmmakers boldly decided to minimize Godzilla’s on-screen presence, yet his overwhelming impact reverberates through the narrative when he does appear. This deliberate restraint heightens the tension and anticipation, making the moments when the monster is revealed even more gripping, allowing the viewers to feel his powerful influence throughout the film.

One compelling reason to celebrate “Minus One” is its complete embrace of the Japanese language, which enriches the film’s authenticity and immerses viewers in a culturally nuanced experience. This choice elevates the storytelling, making it particularly enchanting to enthusiasts of Japanese cinema. Godzilla, a legendary icon, originated in Japan and deserves to be depicted through the lens of its rich cultural heritage.

The film boasts an extraordinary cast, with Minami Hamabe portraying the resilient Noriko Ôishi and Ryûnosuke Kamiki embodying the complex Kôichi Shikishima as they navigate the challenges of post-war Japan. Their performances breathe life into the struggles and emotional depth of a society grappling with its past.

With the release of this latest incarnation of Godzilla, I hope Hollywood will pay attention to the nuances of crafting a genre film. It is a refreshing reminder of how to skillfully operate within the constraints of a modest budget while emphasizing storytelling more. The filmmakers of Minus One demonstrated an impressive ability to utilize visual effects with remarkable efficiency, creating a more immersive experience. Additionally, I was captivated by how the film concluded, leaving viewers with an intriguing hint of potential for a thrilling sequel which is currently being written to add to the seventy year Godzilla phenomena.

In closing, I penned an article that explores my deep affection not just for Godzilla but specifically for Minus One. The sheer brilliance of the filmmakers resonates with me profoundly; their remarkable dedication and creativity breathe new life into this legendary monster, resurrecting it from the figurative grave. It is truly inspiring to witness how they reimagined this iconic creature, blending nostalgia with innovative storytelling. I cannot help but admire their remarkable efforts in elevating the Godzilla legacy to new heights.

Silo Nine and Ten – An Excellent Season Two End!

Welcome back Silo Science Fiction Lovers,

    Silo new poster portrait

Season two episodes nine “The Safeguard” and episode ten “Into The Fire” exceeded our expectations. We give the series a straight “A” for season two. The rebellion in Silo Eighteen become manifest while events in Silo Seventeen reveal important details dovetailing the season two finale setting up excitement for season three!

Showrunner and series creator Graham Yost in recent interviews shared where his superb science fiction series adaptation of the novels is going in Silo season three: “There are a lot of mysteries about Silo 17. The chief one being that all those people went outside, they had an hour to get outside. They didn’t all die in three minutes. What the fuck happened out there? That’s gonna be part of Season 3. You’ll get the answers to all of that. And then there are other things you don’t find out until Season 4”

Viewers will recall that in a July 2013 interview with SFFWorld author Hugh Howey discussed on the meaning behind the title of his first book “Wool”. Howey also shared where we might be going in season four in another interview with SFFWorld conducted in September 2013 that discusses the final book in the series “Dust”: “There are quite a few meanings behind the title of the series. There’s the old phrase ‘Pull the wool over my eyes’ which is the question raised by the (Silo) wallscreens” (screen that viewers witness in the television series on Apple TV.

    Silo book one Wool

“What is really out there? Who is being deceived? Or are they? There’s also the allusion to sheep, those metaphorical blind followers who just do what they’re told, go where they’re told to go, never question. A third meaning has to do with humans being compared to sheep when we are taken advantage of or ‘fleeced’.”

All of these interviews have contemporary parallels. Readers with the print editions might notice a hidden clue here and there. The cover of the first “Wool” is meant to highlight the multiple meanings. “I’ve only pointed this out to a few people (I prefer to let readers discover these things on their own), but if you look at the center of the cover, the two ‘O’s look like eyes staring out at the beautiful world beyond. Is the wool pulled down over what we see? Or do we see through it? I really hope the answer to this question bounces back and forth for the reader as they progress through the story.”

In the final two episodes viewers were provided answers to many of the questions posed in the novels including what is in “The Vault” of each Silo as well as a surprise ending in the season finale.

    The Safeguard:

Silo S2x09 Miscreant Mayor Holland is worried

As we proceed to analyze the final two episodes of season two, it is Important to remember that other than Miscreant Mayor Holland (Tim Robbins) The Head of IT and their shadows Lukas Kyle (Avi Nash), and Judge Meadows (Tanya Moodie), people who live in their respective Silo’s have no clue regarding the other network Silo bunkers that we learn number fifty-one in total.

Silo S2x09 Lukas is caught down deep

Each Silo resident believes that they are the last remnants of humanity protected from an external polluted environment where no human being can survive. The extra Silo is likely where whoever or whatever controls the Artificial Intelligence (AI), is a central control hub monitoring the happenings in each Silo. We learn that the AI is referred to as “The Algorithm” takes lethal precautions (The Safeguard) in the event of Silo rebellions or other emergency events. Who or what is inside the fifty-first Silo is not revealed. is it a computer controlled AI or are there other human survivors controlling everything?

Silo S2x10 Rick Amundsen, Paul Billings, Martha Walker, Carla McLain, Shirley Campbell and Knox team up

Written by Jessica Blaire and directed by Amber Templemore, episode nine sets the pivot point to the season two finale as Sheriff Paul Billings (Chinaza Uche), Hank (Billy Postlethwaite), and Juliette’s (Rebecca Ferguson) father Dr. Pete Nichols (Iain Glen) begin to have serious doubts about Mayor Holland. Billings and his wife Kathleen (Caitlin Zoz) decide to join the rebellion group of Martha Walker (Harriet Walter) who is being blackmailed monitored by Holland to save her lover Carla McLain (Clare Perkins). This factor is unknown to the rest of the main rebellion members Knox (Shane McRae), and Shirley Campbell (Remmie Milner).

Silo S2x09 Lukas heads down deep

Meanwhile Lukas Kyle, who has broken the code of Salvador Quinn and “The Pact”, heads deep into Silo Eighteen where he learns about “The Safeguard”. As he ventures further into a tunnel, he find that it ends in a circular vault door. Unexpectedly, the AI voice demands answers from Lukas. “Lukas Kyle, why are you here?” The AI tells him that only three people have ever made it that far: Salvador Quinn (who we do not meet), Mary Meadows who was murdered by Holland, and George Wilkins (Ferdinand Kingsley) who was Juliette’s lover who was also murdered for knowing too much.

    Silo S2x09 Solo is stunned

Back in Silo Seventeen, Juliette uncovers the truth about Solo’s past. Viewers learn about three characters teens that attacked Solo (Steve Zahn) and Juliette. The three are named Audrey (Georgina Sadler), Rick (Orlando Norman), and Hope (Sara Hazemi) nicknamed Eater who is treated like a slave. Each are children of the Silo Seventeen survivors of the initial rebellion who never went outside to perish as a result of “The Safeguard”. Audrey and Rick grew up in Silo Seventeen literally looking for scraps of food that keep them alive. They have two children together, one of whom is a baby. Their parents were killed by Solo which is why they seek retribution for their parents murder. In the previous episode. Audrey and Rick kidnapped Solo who is the only person who knows The Vault code where Solo has food.

    Silo S2x09 Young Jimmy

A major reveal in “The Safeguard” is that Juliette learns that Solo’s father was killed when he was a teenager just like Audrey and Rick who were the only other survivors of Silo Seventeen. As such Solo was actually the victim in all the Silo Seventeen events including the fact that his father was murdered by the Silo Seventeen Sheriff forcing Solo to hide inside The Vault at a young age. We learn that Solo’s fathers real name as the head of Information Technology of Silo Seventeen, was Russell Conroy (Nick Haverson). After locking himself in the vault, Solo, on his dad’s instructions to protect his own life does so. Since he grew up in isolation, this explains Solo’s immature behavior that we have observed.

Silo S2x09 Camille and Robert Sims

As the episode winds down we witness Lukas exploring the tunnels in Silo Eighteen just as Juliette had when she went to the bottom of Silo Seventeen. Exactly what is “The Safeguard” and what or who is the overbearing AI who enforces the rules of the Silos? Will Lukas reveal what he has learned in the season finale to Robert Sims (Common) who warned Lucas he is being used by Mayor Holland and his wife Camille (Alexandria Riley)? And will Juliette succeed to head back to Silo Eighteen before the rebellion erupts there?

    Into The Fire:

Silo S2x01 Entrance to 2nd Silo

Written by Aric Avelino and directed by Amber Templemore wherein viewers will learn that Juliette and Lukas discovered the same thing when the ominous AI warns it will initiate “The Safeguard” (a release of poison gas) to be activated killing everyone in a given Silo in the process. This is precisely what was perpetrated in Silo Seventeen when the rebellion erupted there. The victims didn’t die from going outside, the all perished from the poison gas!

    Silo S2x10 Miscreant Mayor Holland

The episode focus is on the growing rebellion in Silo Eighteen of which Miscreant Mayor Holland has become aware. This apparently includes destroying the Silo Eighteen generator system at the lowest Mechanical level. Holland overhears this because he has a camera in Martha Walker’s room to blackmail her. Mayor Holland believes the rebellion meeting completely, sending his entire force to the generator level to disarm the explosives and arrest all the perpetrators.

Silo S2x10 Juliettes Dad Dr Nichols

What Mayor Holland does not know is that Martha Walker used sign language to communicate and warn Dr. Nichols. The good doctor moves to a level above the generator and detonates a suicide vest to destroy the stair case. The result is that all of Holland’s police force are trapped in the lower levels allowing the rebellion to take place.

Next we are in a meeting between Lukas and Miscreant Mayor Holland. Although we do not hear what is being said, we assume that it about “The Safeguard”. When Holland finds out his forces are trapped, he gets his own hazmat suit to escape the Silo before he can be captured by the rebellious residents.

Silo S2x10 Solo thinks about the future

However, before Holland can step outside through the airlock, Juliette enters Silo Eighteen after her journey from Silo Seventeen where she saved Solo after linking up with him again, promising him that she will return to Silo Seventeen if at all possible. Juliette shares with Holland that that they can still save their underground home if they work together, telling Holland about how “The Safeguard” can be stopped without revealing the details.

Silo S2x10 Solo and Juliette back together

Unfortunately, before Holland and Juliette can finally work it out, they find themselves trapped inside Silo Eighteen’s airlock. The airlock’s decontamination flames automatically activate as Holland screams get down!

    Silo S2x09 Juliette is safe

As Bernard and Juliette drop to the floor to save themselves, the scene does not reveal their ultimate fate. Nevertheless, since Juliette is the main character of the series, she will no doubt survive in season three and beyond.

We cannot say the same for the hated Miscreant Mayor Holland. Based on the books where the Holland character is burned to death.

Silo S2x10 Judge Sims takes aim

We will have to wait and see if season three features the Mayor Holland character or not. Why? Because in a sequence prior to this, Judge Robert Sims heads to the Silo Eighteens Vault with his wife Camille and son after Lukas tells them to do so.

To his surprise, the AI voice in the Vault orders Robert and his son to leave, informing Camille that only she may stay. This suggests that the AI has been keeping a close eye on all the events that Camille has been exercising to enhance her political power. The question for viewers to ponder once again is “The Algorithm” AI voice a person or a super intelligent computer monitoring everything from Silo fifty-one? This question is not addressed, but it becomes obvious that Camille has been selected as the new mayor of Silo Eighteen IT to replace Holland. Is this Holland’s final episode in the series? Perhaps.

Silo S1x03 Mayor Holland prepares for trouble

As we move to conclude this superb season, viewers must recall that earlier in season two, Mayor Holland revealed the Silos were built 352 years earlier. This suggests that it has been over three centuries since the apocalyptic event forced many human survivors to find shelter in the Silo underground structures. Based on the last known rebellion approximately 140 years earlier this and that it had been over 185 years prior to that since the beginning of the Silo’s, viewers can assume the final scenes in the season happened at least three hundred fifty-two years before the “current” events.

Silo S2x10 Washington DC 352 years earlier

What is revealed in the final minutes is a scene that occurs well before the Silo’s future timeline in Washington DC. We meet a journalist named Helen (Jessica Henwick), who works for The Washington Post. Helen is meeting with an unnamed Congressman from Georgia’s fifteenth Congressional district. Helen is seeking to learn more about why the United States was victim of a radiological “dirty bomb” attack by Iran.

This is evidenced by the use of radiation detectors just prior to her meeting with the Congressman. Named in the book as Congressman Donald Keene, but not revealed in the episode, the Congressman incorrectly assumes that he is on a date with Helen. However, Helen asks him about the Iran “dirty bomb” attack.

Silo S2x10 Congressman in Washington DC restauramt 352 years earlier

This meeting with the Congressman can only be a reference for the government plan for dealing with a world war that predates humanities seeking protection in the Silo’s.

We do not learn more at this time since the Congressman keeps quiet and leaves the restaurant. The body language of the Congressman indicates that he obviously knows something Helen does not yet know.

is it about the history of the Silo’s? Likely this is the case based on what happens next.

    Silo S2x10 The Pez dispenser

In a cryptic sequence, the Congressman gives Helen a Pez dispenser. Viewers must then recall that In Silo season one, George Wilkins gifted the exact Pez dispenser to Juliette with a message describing what he had found in Silo Eighteens lower level tunnels. This is the information that ultimately cost him his life and motivated Juliette to seek answers.

Does this mean that Helen was one of George Wilkins’ ancestors in Silo Eighteen? Is the Pez dispenser a symbol of rebellion against the fifty-first Silo AI also known as “The Algorithm”? Is Helen the ancestor in Silo Eighteen who began the process of inquiring about the world humans currently exist in Silo? This exciting sequence of events will have to be explored in season three and perhaps into season four. Will these details about Helen be featured as the season three opener? TeamWHR believes the answer is yes, but all must tune in to Apple TV to find out!

Silo Seven and Eight – Let’s Hope It’s Not Too Late!

Welcome back Silo Science Fiction Lovers,

    Silo new poster portrait

Silo season two has brought science fiction excitement to viewers again thanks Apple TV to the talented AMC Executive Production Team of Graham Yost (series creator), Remi Aubuchon, Fred Golan, Nina Jack, Morten Tyldum, Ingrid Escajeda, Michael Dinner, Rebecca Ferguson, each have brought the work of Hugh Howey’s to life on our screens the past two seasons

Outperforming the expectations of TeamWHR, we are pleased that the series has been renewed for a third and fourth seasons to dovetail the trilogy of novels (Wool, Shift, and Dust) by Howey. What is especially nice about Apple TV has ensured that an appropriate ending is mapped out well in advance for each series. This is especially true when compared to the decades of science fiction series on United States broadcast television that sometimes treated viewers like trash, often cancelling series mid stream or without providing an ending worthy of the devotion to their viewers. While some series we covered did receive an appropriate ending seasons, far too often, superb series such as Terra Nova, Alcatraz, Primeval New World, The Event, V Series, and more, did not. Recently the same channel that broadcast Day of the Dead and The Ark left viewers hanging with no satisfactory resolution for either program. Even top rated series such as Stargate Universe and The Expanse (later picked up by Amazon MGM Studios) were cancelled without explanation. Backlash from viewers have sent a message to broadcast networks who have now followed science fiction series to streamers such as Apple TV.

    Silo S1x10 Outside

In season one, the Silo creators familiarized viewers with life in a dystopian post apocalyptic world fleshing out the hierarchy where TPTB (The Powers That Be) of Information Technology (IT) live in absolute luxury at the top of the Silo Eighteen levels. Next in terms of relative power are the Judicial and Law Enforcement divisions designed to keep the worker class of Mechnical and Agriculture kept in virtual slavery. Anyone suspected of bucking the situation or arguing with TPTB is falsely promoted to become a viewing portal “Cleaner”, is sent outside in defective hazmat suit, and die.

The hero of the series, Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) is driven to investigate the mysterious death of her lover. Her investigation reveals a conspiracy that ends up with her being promoted to “Sheriff” that ultimate leads to Juliette being sent outside. Juliette escapes her death when allies provide her with proper hazmat suit sealing tape that allows Juliette to find that other Silo’s exist as she explored Silo Seventeen.

As season two began after Juliette went “Outside”, we learn that the Silo Eighteen inhabitants have been lied to for decades leading to a brewing rebellion. Based on the book series, there are fifty Silo’s one for each of the United States, formed by a Unites States Government directive in 2049.

Conversely, when Juliette witnesses an expanse of Silo’s like her own and that Silo Seventeen did rebel before meeting a survivor, viewers know there is much more to learn. Escaping outside, Silo Seventeen inhabitants. all unprotected were killed by the toxic atmosphere. As they superb story proceeds, we will also learn that some residents suspect that rebellion has occurred in the past in Silo Eighteen and are about to burst upon their reality.

    The Dive:

Silo S2x07 Carla McLain interrogated by Miscreant Mayor Holland

The seventh episode directed by Michael Dinner and written by Katherine DiSavino provides focus is on several story arc details. First, we are with Miscreant Mayor Holland (Tim Robbins) who is in a state of panic over the rising level of tension in Silo Eighteen. Having recruited Lukas Kyle (Avi Nash) as his “Shadow” or protector, Lukas is sent on a mission to decipher the code left by a person known as Salvador Quinn with books stored in a secret vault known as “The Legacy”. Here Lukas finds enough clues related to a numeric code based upon page numbers to begin the decryption process which will be revealed in the next episode.

Silo S2x07 Knox gets ready for action

Second, Knox (Shane McRae) and Shirley Campbell (Remmie Milner) continue on their mission to turn more people against Holland after he locked up Carla McLain (Clare Perkins) unjustly.

Recently promoted to Judge, from Sheriff, Robert Sims (Common) also has growing serious doubts about the trustworthiness of Mayor Holland despite Sims many years of loyalty to Holland..

Silo S2x05 Sheriff Billings does not like what is happening

Third, Sheriff Billings (Chinaza Uche) pursues his investigation into the odd occurrences that include blocking entire sections “down below” from being able to visit the upper levels subsequent to food sent to the lower levels being poisoned. The investigation reveals that someone from the upper level of the hierarchy were directly involved.

Silo S2x07 Juliette dives to drain Solo's Silo

Lastly, per the name of the episode “The Dive”, Juliette agrees to help Silo Seventeen’s enigmatic character Solo (Steve Zahn) fix a pump to drain his from flooding which threatens his life. To do so Juliette must undertake a dangerous dive to repair the malfunctioning pump.

Nearly drowning in the process, Juliette suffers further from returning to the surface too quickly. Once she recovers from “The Bends” or decompression sickness, Juliette discovers that Solo is missing with traces of blood where he was standing when she performed “The Dive” to fix the pump system.

    The Book Of Quinn:

    Silo S2x08 Martha is worried

Written by Remi Aubuchon and directed by Amber Templemore, this episode reveals that Solo is not alone in Silo Seventeen and that Miscreant Mayor Holland resorts to subterfuge to turn off a mechanical pump to meet with Martha Walker (Harriet Walter). Using threats and blackmail Holland forces Walker to spy for him to put down the pending rebellion or Holland will harm her lover Carla.

Silo S2x07 Judge Sims doesn't like Miscreant Mayor Holland

Meanwhile Judge Robert Sims has learned about Mayor Holland’s secret mission concerning Salvador Quinn’s code that Lukas Kyle has figured out. Using his wife Camille (Alexandria Riley), Judge Sims convinces Rick Amundsen (Christian Ochoa Lavernia) to reveal why the Mayor is obsessed Salvador Quinn’s life Sims embarks on war with Holland attempting to lure Lukas to his side by revealing that as soon as Holland gets what he wants, Lukas will be sent back to serve out his life in hard labor within the mines of Silo Eighteen. Lukas takes the message to heart while continuing to learn the significance of Salvador Quinn’s code.

Silo S2x04 Judge Mary Meadows meets the Mechanical team

This leads Lukas to  a man named Terrance Penbrook (Stuart Milligan), who remembers Quinn was a former head of IT who burned all evidence 100 years ago of rebellions that occurred 140 years ago. This factor maintained peace in Silo Eighteen until the recent uprisings.

Penbrook reluctantly reveals that a long time ago, Judge Meadows (Tanya Moodie) sought them out also looking for Quinn’s books. This ties to Meadows being murdered earlier in the season by Holland after she obtained Salvador Quinn’s copy of “The Pact”.

Silo S2x07 Martha seeks answers about The Pact

Lukas finds the book containing several underlined sections that Martha also knows about from her association with Judge Meadows. The code that has been decrypted reads, “If you’ve gotten this far, you already know the game is rigged.” The decrypted message can be seen as a warning. The “game” can refer to only the corrupt administration of the Silo Eighteen, which is rigged by the personal priorities of its rulers that include murder and drugging the population to maintain a rebellion free environment.

Silo S2x08 Juliette armed and ready

The episode winds down when Juliette, upon returning to the surface, learns that her Silo Seventeen friend Solo has disappeared. That is when she finds out that there are more people now inside in Silo Seventeen! She asks an individual about Solo, who tells her that Solo is dead. Juliette must find Solo since he has her hazmat suit needed to return to Silo Eighteen to save it’s 10,000 inhabitants from a useless rebellion. When pressing the mysterious person for answers, he shoots Juliette with an arrow despite defending herself. Suddenly two more people show up. Juliette surmises that they came from another Silo looking for supplies?

    Silo S2x09 Young Jimmy

At this juncture, what is not revealed is the motive of these three new characters. Even if they are searching for resources, it is troubling that they are so hostile.

Juliette decides they may useful if she can convince them that she is not their enemy, only seeking to return to her own friends and family setting up the final two episodes of season two, episode none “The Safeguard” and episode ten “Into The Fire” when we will learn more about Solo and his past that created his fate!

    Questions to consider:
Will Lukas join Judge Sims now that he has uncovered the truth?
Will Juliette find Solo and her hazmat suit or was he really killed?
Who are the three new characters and where did they come from?
Can the growing rebellion in Silo Eighteen be stopped or is it inevitable?

Silo Four, Five, Six – Who Decides The Future Fate of the Silo’s?

    Hello, Silo fans!

    Silo new poster portrait

Season two of the Apple TV series has become volatile in these last few episodes. I am happy to hear that this series has been renewed for a third and fourth season.

I am also happy Apple TV and other streaming services have taken up the torch from Netflix  with a large quantity of quality television shows that give fans an intelligent choice of science fiction series as we previously reported.

Since a favorite of mine, Fringe (2008 to 2013) ended, and now that The Ark has not been renewed, science fiction shows are no longer being broadcast on network television for the time being in the United States.

Nevertheless, I have enjoyed Silo as well as several streaming science fiction series that I have covered for TeamWHR. I have enjoyed watching these three episodes of Silo and was able to follow the story arc along nicely thanks to the awesome AMC Executive Production Team of Graham Yost (series creator), Remi Aubuchon, Fred Golan, Nina Jack, Morten Tyldum, Ingrid Escajeda, Michael Dinner, Rebecca Ferguson, and of course, Hugh Howey, the author of the fantastic book series.

    Silo main cast

The cast itself is terrific, led by Rebecca Ferguson, who I have been a fan of for a while and who can hold her own against heavy hitters, as demonstrated in the current Mission: Impossible franchise.

Tim Robbins, Common, Steve Zahn, and Harriet Walter round out the other actors in the series. Seeing an Academy Award winning actor like Tim Robbins venture into science fiction television is nice, especially considering that he is primarily a movie actor.

    Silo main and ensemble cast

Silo features an excellent supporting cast including Shane McRae as Knox, David Oyelowo as Sheriff Holsten, Billy Postlethwaite as Hank, Iain Glen as Dr. Pete Nichols, Chinaza Uche as Paul Billings, Avi Nash as Lucas Kyle, Remmie Milner as Shirley Campbell, Christian Ochoa Lavernia as Amundsen, Olatunji Ayofe as Teddy, Caitlin Zoz as Kathleen Billings, Tanya Moodie as Judge Mary Meadows, Chipo Chung as Sandy, Angela Yeoh as Deputy Molly Karins, Matt Gomez Hidaka as Cooper, Will Patton as Deputy Marnes, Akie Kotabe as Diego, a return of Amelie Child Villiers as young Juliette, and a superb supporting cast and crews.

This analysis will be a bit different from my normal routine television reviews. I will review the fourth, fifth, and sixth Silo episodes with a short synopsis of the top aspects of the story arc in each episode.

It will not be an in-depth scene by scene analysis as I usually do, but I will share with you my opinions and observations for the exciting episodes four, five, and six that follows our analysis of season two episodes one, two and three and hope you enjoy my Silo series analysis as much as I do writing it!

    The Harmonium:

    Silo S2x04 Juliette gets ready
    I,mage courtesy Apple TV

While Juliette (Ferguson) is trying to figure out how to fix her hazmat suit, Solo (Zahn) is tagging along in a way and trying to distract her from her task at hand.

I find Zahn’s character on the spectrum, giving her random facts about elephants and talking about 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne. I am not sure if all of that is his intention because he is the only one in that silo or if what he is doing is intentional.

    Silo S2x04 Solo and Juliette

With the episode directed by Aric Avelino and written for the screen by Sal Calleros, both move the story forward to inform the next episodes.

With Holland (Robbins) and Sims (Common) discussing their plan to impeach Judge Meadows (Tanya Moodie) with the hopes of bringing the Silo to a united front, there may be the opposite effect, and chaos may happen.

Silo S2x04 Harriet Walter as Martha and Claire Perkins as Carla ready to rebel

Miscreant Mayor Holland has a plan of his own and has a corrupt plan to take even more control over the citizens of the Silo who are on the verge of rebellion. I had read that the character of Holland in the books is the opposite of the actor portraying him. Tim Robbins is a great actor, but another actor closer to Holland’s characteristics should have been cast. Considering his insecurity in life, it would make more sense to me and make what Holland is doing much more sinister.

Silo S2x04 Judge Mary Meadows meets the Mechanical team

Holland’s intentions toward Judge Meadows are nefarious as he “invites” her to his place to try on her new suit. His intentions are not what they seem. Unfortunately, Meadows finds out the hard way that Holland tricks her, and the dinner she ate, which he provided, had poisonous mushrooms. As she lay dying, he tells her that her death will unite the Silo.

Juliette tells Solo about the outside and how she is scared and lonely. No doubt Solo feels he has been alone for some time and can relate. Solo reminds me of a person who wants some company, and when he finds that company, he takes it upon himself to talk and talk about random things that do not make sense.

Silo S2x04 Mayor Holland with Remmie Milner as Shirley and Shane McRae as Knox

Knox (Shane McRae), Shirley (Remmie Milner), and Walker (Walter) go to see Judge Meadows, but only Knox and Shirley enter the room and find Sims there. Once they discover the judge is dead, a knife sticks out of her chest, “The people of the Silo have to take care of themselves,” Holland says to them in the room. Knox and Shirley exit calmly and tell the others to do the same, not to arouse suspicion that something is wrong. Sims lies to the crowd gathered outside Judicial and tells them that Mechanical killed Meadows, hoping to cause a rebellion uprising or riot—justice for his benefit.

The visuals of the Silo in general are wonderfully done. In specific, the spiral staircase that depicts various levels from down below to “up top” where the ruling IT group with the evil Miscreant Mayor Holland and his cronies work and live are very well done.

However, much of the series is very darkly lit. I assume that is intentional to show the bleak nature of the situation in the Silo, but it can be a bit difficult, in fact rather harsh at times. This often makes it hard to see what is happening in some of the scenes.

    Descent:

With the mob incited in the previous episode by Sims, the mob is looking for Mechanical. Holland goes to visit Sims at his family home. He tells him that he will no longer be his shadow and that because he forced Holland’s hand, which led to the judge’s demise, Sims will now oversee the Judicial and become the new judge. There is a bounty for Knox and Shirley, one thousand credits each. That is enough incentive for the people of the silo to act. With Sims now judge, his priorities shift, although he has no idea that his wife Camille (Alexandria Riley) has a hand in helping Knox and Shirley hide. It is unclear if Camille would turn Knox and Shirley over or if she had other ulterior motives in mind. The director, Amber Templemore, and writer, Jenny DeArmitt, help move the story further into the chaos we see in the rest of the episode.

Holland is unhappy when hearing that Camille was spotted with the fugitives, but he has other plans. He recruits Lukas Kyle (Avi Nash) to help decipher the hard drive Juliette and Lukas had worked on together. Although Juliette never revealed to Lukas what she saw on the hard drive, Lukas is tasked with trying to piece together what was left of it. Lukas helping Holland is the catalyst for Kyle getting some time from his sentence in the mine. What Kyle discovers is love letters from Salvador Quinn to his wife. Holland’s reaction to hearing that made me wonder if he knew who Quinn was. It was also discovered that there are tunnels in their silo, but do not know where they lead. Holland keeps Lukas on to help figure out what those tunnels are for and where they might lead.

Silo S2x05 Sheriff Billings does not like what is happening

Sheriff Billings (Chinaza Uche) is suspicious of all the chaos and the sudden change in Sim’s role.

With Hank (Billy Postlethwaite), Billings discovers that Kennedy (Rick Gomez) is still alive and hiding in Mechanical. Kennedy convinces Billings that he knows all the “dirty secrets” of the silo and more and will tell him everything if he can get him some help for the bullet lodged in his shoulder.

While searching through the remains of an old silo to repair her hazmat suit, Juliette comes across some evidence that Solo may not be who he says he is. She finds a picture of Solo and Tiny, but the picture looks nothing like who she thinks Solo is.

When Juliette confronts Solo about what she sees, he berserk and tells her he is the IT shadow. With Solo leaving Juliette alone, she continues to find a helmet to help fix her suit. She eventually finds one, but with her injured arm now in a full-blown infection, she collapses.

    Barricades:

Silo S2x06 Miscreant Mayor Holland to move against Knox Shirley and Shirley

This is the shortest of the three episodes I reviewed, just forty-five minutes. Holland knows more about what is happening than he lets on. Everything is “going as planned,” from the contaminated food to the barricade’s chaos. He wants Kyle to determine what that cryptic message is on Juliette’s hard drive. What does the code mean? And what does that mean for the Silo?

With Amundsen (Christian Ochoa Lavernia) not doing his job correctly, the barricade gets pushed to 120, allowing Mechanical to get the needed food. This may pose a problem for Holland, but it is only temporary. Diego (Akie Kotabe) meets with Sims and tells him that Mechanical has a saw that can cut through concrete. I assume that this fact is or will be significant in the upcoming episodes. Undoubtedly, that info will throw the proverbial monkey wrench in Holland’s plans. The director Michael Dinner and writer Jeffery Wang, worked together to keep the tension taut in this episode.

Sims is out of the loop and shares his concern with his wife Camille. They decide to cooperate, at least for the time being. Judge Sims then goes to warn Holland about what Mechanical is planning on doing.

Next, when Judge Sims sees Lukas Kyle in Holland’s office, he knows something is wrong because Lukas Kyle was sentenced to harsh punishment. Lukas should be in the mines serving his sentence, not helping Miscreant Mayor Holland.

Instead Lukas therefore continues to decipher the code embedded in the hard drive but cannot quite get all of it and needs more information.

Upon hearing this, Mayor Holland immediately makes Lukas Kyle his shadow with privileges including access to “The Vault”. I am sure that since Solo was in “The Vault” in his own Silo that more of this will be explained in later episodes.

    Silo S2x06 Martha is concerned

Patrick Kennedy explained to Billings that when Juliette Nichols was on the run, the computer went down, and it was not a system reboot like he thought it was, but something else he could not explain.

Again, I assume this will come into play in later episodes. With that information, Billings finds Martha, Knox and Shirley and asks them what happened to Meadows. Upon learning the truth, he attempts to confront Holland about what he discovered, but Holland cuts off all communications. He tells Hank, “I do not stand with Judge, the mayor, or you. I stand with the law.”

In the final minutes of this episode, we finally see Juliette as she wakes up in bed. With Solo’s help, as he tends to her wound, she does not waste any time and wants to return with the helmet she found to repair her suit. However, Solo has other plans in mind. Juliette knows that she must help Solo stop the water from rising or it will eventually kill him. We will have to wait and see exactly what Juliette decides to do in the next episode titled “The Dive”.

Will Juliette help Solo in exchange for getting an undamaged hazmat suit, or will something else happen? I hope that what happens in the next few episodes helps fans piece together what the powers that be have in store for the Silo and what Juliette’s fate will be. I am sure those who read the books know where the series is going, but the writers may take a few liberties and change a bit of the story. I guess we will have to wait and see as we look forward to seeing the creators and cast at San Diego Comic-Con in 2025.
