Space City Comic Con – Going Where I Have Never Gone Before, SCCC!

    sccc banner 2015

Hey Gulf Coast, can you guess what’s coming up in Houston, Texas?!

Space City Comic Con (SCCC) is happening Friday through Sunday, July 24-26, 2015 at NRG Center! From VIP experiences, cosplayer contests, gaming, panels, actors, voice actors, comic creators/artists, and vendors there will be lots of family entertainment, SCCC has a great many entertainers lined for you.

Houston ComicCon logo - Click to visit and follow Space City Comic-Con on Twitter!

This will be the place to be for the latest in all things pop-culture! William Shatner PortraitSpace City Comic Con is bringing none other than Star Trek’s Captain James T. Kirk, William Shatner! I grew up watching reruns of Star Trek and that was pretty much my leap into the sci-fi genre.

Captain Kirk is very active on twitter, you can find, follow, and interact with Mr. Shatner here: WilliamShatner, and together with his wife, Elizabeth, they have spearheaded a charity called The All Glory Project. Raising money for many great charities, Mr. Shatner and his wife, Elizabeth have hearts of gold.

There is nothing that I don’t love about him! Star Trek Voyager Cast Photo IMDbIf Star Trek: Voyager was more your speed, SCCC is having a Star Trek: Voyager 20th anniversary celebration on July 25th. Kate Mulgrew, Starfleet Captain Kathryn Janeway, will be there along with other cast mates Ethan Phillips, Manu Intiraymi, artist Rick Sternbach, Tim Russ, Garrett Wang, Robert Beltran and Robert Picardo.

I would recommend checking the schedules first, because you may have your hearts set on seeing some of your favorites, however they may only be at SCCC certain days and times. Assassin's Creed BannerPower Rangers Time Force PhotoAssassin’s Creed (AC) fans unite! A huge fan of AC myself, mostly countless hours watching my son play, I love all that goes into creating this video game. From the artwork, motion capture, to the voices behind the game. AC is a game based on rivalry between two secret societies, the Knights Templar and Assassins. Good versus evil.

Scheduled to appear at SCCC are Altair ibn La-Ahad (Cas Anvar, from Source Code, Syfy‘s Olympus), Edward Kenway (Matt Ryan, most recently of Constantine, but also from Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior), Aveline de Grandpre (Amber Goldfarb, from SYFY hits Helix and Being Human), and Federico Auditore da Firenze (Elias Toufexis, from Deus Ex and Bitten).

For the avid Power Rangers fans, an historic reunion is being set for SCCC featuring Power Rangers: Time Force. I have what I refer to as my ‘secret shame’ when it comes to the Power Rangers. I used to watch it with my son and was caught more than once watching them long after my son had left the room. Gigi Edgley Portrait

Even though he seems to have outgrown them, I am kind of excited about reliving that with him! Not the busted alone part.. Speaking of when you’re younger, one often watches shows where you find yourself loving the characters but don’t stop to think too much about who the person is behind it or under the make-up. You just sit and watch, fascinated.

I was very pleased when I recently learned that Gigi Edgley was the brilliant actor behind Chiana from Farscape! She was one of the reasons I loved watching that show and was easily my favorite character. The make-up, the costume and energy!

Gigi has not been idle since Farscape, doing things from recording artist to directing and producing. Make sure to stop by and say hi to Ms. Edgley while at SCCC. Manu Bennett PortraitManu Bennett who plays Deathstroke on the CW’s Arrow, yes please! I love a good Supervillain! “A man is only as good as his word. But in the underground world of assassins, mercenaries, and guns-for-hire, words mean little. What matters is action and follow through—completing the mission.

That is what makes you good. Never failing—even when it comes to taking down the World’s Greatest Super Heroes, some of the most powerful beings in the world—that’s what makes you the best. That’s what makes you Deathstroke” DC Comics.

As an added bonus VIP passes for Manu Bennett and *Matt Ryan now include a small meet and greet! These two are not the only guests with VIP opportunities, check out the SCCC website for more details. Maguire, Skarsten, McGowan, and Murray Images

There is something for everyone from what seems like all genres- including Once Upon a Time!

Guess what Oncers? – Robin Hood is coming to Houston. I first saw Sean Maguire in 2008’s Meet the Spartans and this guy is hilarious!

And from One Tree Hill cast members Chad Michael Murray (recently played Mirabeau Lamar in Texas Rising), Antwon Tanner, and Michael Copon. Still more, get set to meet the beautiful and talented Rachel Skarsten of Lost Girl, Reign, and Birds of Prey who is scheduled to attend, as well as Captain Charles Vane of Starz’s Black Sails, Zach McGowan.

Cosplay ImagesIf the world of cosplay piques your interest, be certain not to miss Soni Aralynn, Hybrid Cosplay, Tatiana DeKhtyar, Mista Sean J, Vamptress LeeAnna Vamp, to name just a few of the many more to appear. I’m hoping to see some X-Men and, even though you see her a lot, Harley Quinn, to see all the different takes on her costume.

I love the creativity and attention to detail these cosplayers put into their character’s costumes. It is amazing that one can be a professional cosplayer, but when you see the quality of their work, it is not hard to think these artists are anything less than pros!

Marvel ArtAnd as if all of the entertainers on this green earth are not enough for you, check out the myriad of comic illustrators, graphic artists, photographers, and writers.

I know that I am stopping by to see them and their work! They’ve worked on comic books like Spiderman, Catwoman, Fantastic Four, Deadpool, and X-Men – just about everything in both the Marvel and DC Comics Universes. Tartanic Portrait

And as any good advertisement states, “but wait, there’s more!” Tartanic, the touring bagpipe, drum, dance, and comedy ensemble is coming to SCCC! One biography reads, “Imagine one dancer, six drums, six drones, 18 notes, fast fingers, high comedy, flying happiness, taste-defying stunts, and scorching hot music played at over 120 beats per minute with driving speed and high volume, all brought to you by four men without pants and two smokin’ hot lasses!”

This fun group is definitely on my SCCC must list! Space City Comic Con BannerThere will be so much to do and see at Space City Comic Con! I’m positive that I didn’t fit everything in.

For details and schedules, and to purchase tickets and passes, you can jump over to Space City Comic Con’s site. There you can see all guests scheduled to appear. I hope to see you there!

Being Human: Episode 12 “You’re The One That I Haunt” and Episode 13 “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Me Killing You”

Being Human 2011 Season One Banner

Hello once again Being Human fans,

We are doing a combined episodic review and analysis because these two episodes are inextricably tied together. Our Team Leader OffWorldTravelr (Ginger) will be doing an additional special analysis about the mythology and mystery of Syfy’s version of Being Human in the not too distant future.

SPOILER ALERT: If you have not watched these two episodes and do not enjoy spoilers, please stop reading now and return when you have done so. This analysis explores the episodes with focus on certain aspects of the finale with discussion of the Single Effect as presented in Episode 12 “You’re The One That I Haunt” and Episode 13 “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Me Killing You”. If you do not mind spoilers, please continue reading and enjoy. Thank you.Click to learn more about Being Human on Syfy!

    Episode 12:

Previously we learned that Josh (Sam Huntington) became aware that Nora (Kristen Hager) was pregnant, and the Dutchman (Terry Kinney) warns Aidan (Sam Witwer) to prepare for what is coming. for goodness sakes our lovely female protagonist Sally Malik (Meaghan Rath) had become a zombie.

Being a zombie will play an important part of what is too come later in the episode. The makeup and special effects used to “zombie out” Ms. Rath are outstanding.

Being Human S1x12 - Sally is a zombie
One part I truly enjoyed is during the beginning when there is an extremely funny bit between the other two heroes of Being Human. During the scene between Aidan and Josh packing up loads of wooden stakes. Josh quips that one fell out of his hospital garb and is forced to explain to his co-workers as if he has taken up whittling wooden stakes as a hobby!

Being Human S1x12 - Whittled stakes in the bag
Of course wooden stakes will likely be needed since we all know evil vampires can only be effectively killed by a wooden stake to the heart (or is there another way? In any event the lines delivered by Josh (Sam Huntington) and are simply hilarious as they pack up the stakes for what is about to happen!

Being Human S1x12 - Whittled stakes ready for the bag
In episode 12 Aidan (Sam Witwer) is about to be attacked by Bishop (Mark Pellligrino) in a struggle for power over the vampire legions operating in the eastern seaboard of the United States. At the end of this episode Aidan will lay near death.

But I am getting ahead of myself. This wonderful episode directed by Erik Canuel and written by Nancy Won includes flashbacks to poor Sally Mailk in her new zombie state. A bit later we observe Sally haunting Danny (Gianpaolo Venuta) in the bathroom while he is shaving. During a great moment of story arc and visual effects, Sally the zombie threatens to slit his throat while he is shaving. This obsession Sally has for Danny snaps her out of her zombie state so she can return to her new life as a ghost. Welcome back to the “real world” Sally!

Being Human S1x12 -Sally returns to reality
The Syfy version of the Being Human series does a good job not over using this technique to fill in the back story. This time the important sequence is between the secret lovers meeting with Aidan and Celine (Nathalie Breuer) after seeing her in Boston in the present day. In the look back Aidan had been in love with a human which is where his apparent aversion to relationships stems from. The flashback takes us to Seattle Washington with a younger (20 year old) version of Celine. This time the Celine character is portrayed by Laurence Lebouef during their underwear clad lover romp.

Being Human S1x12 -Flashback to Seattle with Young Celine
After seeing her older self (in Boston) the flashbacks include not only their relationship in which Aidan has not turned her into a vampire, but Bishop has tracked him down to return to the vampire clan.

Being Human S1x12 -Aidan and Bishop in Seattle
At this point Bishop is grooming Aidan and his evil side has not been revealed in full quite yet. After the flashback, we return to find Celine in our time and in Boston.

Being Human S1x12 -Celine is in Boston
Coming to Aidan’s rescue in the hospital, Josh’s aids in stopping him from attacking a hapless janitor Aidan suspects is part of an attack he knows is coming from Bishop. This demonstrates the solid nature of their friendship. Despite being paranoid, Aidan has good reason to be on edge.

Being Human S1x12 -Aidan goes after the janitor

Being Human S1x12 -Aidan about to stake the janitor

We are sure exactly why this has occurred, Aidan’s edginess. However the intervention by Josh is short lived. Aidan later flashes on one of Bishops female operatives in the stairway proving that people loyal to Bishop are indeed out to stake Aidan in the heart. Josh proves his loyalty and stakes the operative who turns to dust before our eyes.

Being Human S1x12 -The new operative is discovered

Being Human S1x12 -Ashs to ashes dust to dust
One of the episodes greatest sequences that I enjoyed illustrates just how far people will go to lie and cover their tracks (much as in real life), Danny  shows up with a 5 gallon container of gasoline to burn the house down in an effort to immolate Sally after she haunted him. As we observed in a previous encounter with a medium, we learned that he had indeed killed her. I recall something similar in life when I was a volunteer fire chief. In order to elude the law a sex offer had attempted to burn his own residence and the evidence of his crimes.

Being Human S1x12 -Danny the arsonist

Being Human S1x12 -Danny burning down the house

Being Human S1x12 -Josh and Aidan arrive in the nick of time
As in my real life experience, in Being Human episode 12, Aidan and Josh arrive in the nick of time to call the fire department and the blaze is extinguished. In a bit of justice after Josh stops Aidan from turning Danny into a vampire, Sally materializes in front of his face and scares the dickens out of Danny warning him he will never be safe.

Being Human S1x12 -Sally show herself to Danny

Outside Danny, like many malcontents and criminals become when caught is now terrified for his life, confesses to the murder of Sally and is taken into custody where he will be “safe”. If only it was so easy in real life for people who have done wrong to learn from their mistakes. We will have more on that topic later.

Being Human S1x12 -Danny confesses his crimes
In a very touching scene between our heroes near the episodes end we observe two of them having martini’s as they are celebrating their successes in surviving.

Being Human S1x12 -The trio toast to success

All of a sudden a doorway or portal to the “other side” (the after life) appears in the living room. Apparently as a result of her having served her purpose on Earth in having justice exacted on Danny, Sally is about to be set free from her Earthly bounds by some sort of divine intervention (the presence of the doorway to the afterlife). What ever this presence is it will play a critical sole in the next sequence of events.

Being Human S1x12 -The portal appears

Being Human S1x12 -Sally is shocked when the portal appears

Suddenly Bishop crashes through the widow casing with a wooden stake in hand and stabs Aidan in the chest! Just when it appears Bishop will succeed in eliminating his age old nemesis and one time protege, something miraculous happens  Bishop begins to “burn” emitting smoke in the process screaming from pain. There was no precedent in previous episodes. Some (including me) have theorized that he was wearing a Star of David, but that was not made apparent in the setup. Another thought it might be due to his attempting to kill his vampire offspring, however Bishop and other characters had eliminated their offspring so that does not fit.

Being Human S1x12 - Bishop burning
It was only after viewing the episode again I had the logical theoretical answer. Perhaps the presence of the doorway or portal to the other side itself is the reason? The fact that the portal to the afterlife was present indicating a divine or non Earthly power must be the answer. Additionally something does seem to be looking over our three heroes throughout the entire thirteen episodes.

Being Human S1x12 - Bishop glanes at the portal
Bishop flees for his own life. He is observed looking towards the portal to the afterlife and hightails it out of the building. We are left with Aidan seemingly alive, but he in need of fresh blood and medical attention if he is too survive. This final sequence setups what I consider to be the second part of episode twelve “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Me Killing You”, episode thirteen the season finale.

Episode 13 – Season One Finale:

When we last left our heroes they were in the throws of either: joy, exasperation and or desperation as the three main cast characters dealt with their challenges. We learned that Josh (Sam Huntington) was aware that Nora (Kristen Hager) is pregnant, Sally (Meaghan Rath) discovered the portal doorway and used it to visit outside the house to “mosey” around, and sadly Aidan (Sam Witwer) was attacked by Bishop (Mark Pellligrino) lay near death afterward until Josh convinced Nora to violate hospital protocol and save him.

Being Human S1x13 - Aidan is near death
This wonderful episode directed Adam Kane and co-written by Anna Fricke and Jeremy Carver opens with flashbacks between the secret hospital room where Nora is asked to help Aidan to the original meeting between Josh and Aidan. Josh had been attacked by Marcus (Vincent Leclerc) and another vampire bully in a back alley where Josh worked.

Being Human S1x13 - Marcus traps Josh in the ally

Aidan came to Josh’s rescue which began their friendship. We are not sure exactly when this has occurred however the intervention by Aidan cements their friendship proving that people with different perspectives and beliefs on Being Human can not only respect each other, they can become friends and overcome the human tendency to spew bile when they discover secrets about each other.

Marcus and the other bully leaves but you can clearly see that the intervention to save the perceived enemy has left a rift that grows into obsession by Bishop’s faction that lead to the attempted assassination of Aidan by Bishop to secure his position of power with the “Dutch”.

Being Human S1x13 - Marcus is Bishops evil minion

Being Human S1x13 - Marcus and bully vampire beat Josh

Being Human S1x13 - Aidan has saved Josh

This is one of the Single Effects of the episode. In real life people often seek self gratification and power at the expense of others with no regard for the damage they inflict on anyone. Perhaps it is even a bit more simple than that.

Some people in this world, real life, are inherently evil and will lie, cheat, steal and slander others to get the attention they crave. At its worst this base human sickness will drive others to the depths of depravity with violence including attempted murder much like Bishop did to Aidan.

Back in the underground chamber Nora agrees reluctantly to provide the blood transfusion saving him from death. Celine (Nathalie Brewer) offers him live blood to heal faster but Aidan refuses indicating that if he feeds he would drain her. Instead Aidan is using a metaphor to indicate he just needs time  to heal.

This too is a message for all of in Being Human. Rather than taking the easy way out Aidan decides to heal further before feeding on Celine to become strong in the pending confrontation with Bishop. In this way he will not need all of her to be ready for battle of power on the eastern seaboard. This battle is symbolic in nature played out as to whom will be the vampire leader in that region.

Being Human S1x13 - Celine comforts Aidan

Unfortunately in real life things do not always turn out so well. People seeking power do not wait patiently. Instead of being introspective about the wrongs they had committed, these misguided souls lash out in anger with what can only be described as a “blood lust” in tragic misguided acts seeking revenge and retribution. Such is a bankrupt way of living.

What these people do not realize is the transparency of their actions are witnessed by all for what it truly is; an evil attempt to cover their own transgressions against others. Much like Bishop this type of hatred drives many in our world who think they should have the respect they perceive as power others have rightfully earned.

Being Human S1x13 - Bishop evilly pats Josh like a dog
Sadly these types of people do not learn that it is not a power you can steal. Respect is earned by doing the right things in life, not by stepping on or slandering others to get to their perceived position of dominance other others. We here at WHR see such poor behavior all the time especially on Twitter where these sad souls not only hurl grenades at others, they pour gasoline on the conflagration trying to foment insurrection by creating often cruel arguments designed to foster ill will.

Being Human S1x13 - Bishop a study in evilness
Let’s set the record straight, the team here at WormholeRiders News Agency does not participate in these juvenile attempts to create conflict. Instead the team does everything possible to not give the malcontents what they seek attention. Instead we ignore them wherever possible. That does not mean we are unaware of what they are doing. We are however quite aware of their dubious actions.

In fact many people send us e-mails with their foul plans, the direct messages the troublemakers think are private and even links to their ill considered trouble making posts. Where the malcontents always go wrong is that they “think” that certain people are their allies, their (friends when in fact they are allies of the WormholeRiders team. Perhaps the troublemakers will learn a lesson one day? We certainly hope they will do so and learn about what Being Human is all about (love and forgiveness, not living a life hating others or holding a grudge ).

In the telling of the Being Human story in general and this episode in specific Aidan may be a vampire (the stereo type personification of evil) but he is really a “good guy”. What do Aidan and his true friend Josh desire? He wants to do the right things between the werewolves and vampires obtaining peace in the process, or at least a working cordial relationship between foes in this age old struggle of conflict in Being Human.

Being Human S1x13 - Aidan and Josh want peace
Bishop on the other hand represents the evil people in our world who will do anything to secure their position, positions by the way that neither Bishop nor the malcontents of our world rightfully deserve either by training and hard work. Such positions are certainly not earned from their exhibited (demonstrated) and often repeated misguided behaviors

The episode continues with additional flashbacks from the past back to the present circumstances with our heroes reflecting on how they arrived at this critical juncture in their experiences.

Josh reflects on Aidan’s intervention and his successful application for employment at the hospital. Sally discovers that during or from going through the portal door that after the process she has a more solid existence being “tethered” to Earth in the process.  Aidan discusses the reasons for befriending Josh. Nora considers whether Josh will be a fit father not yet realizing the reason for his behavior, that he is a werewolf.

Being Human S1x13 - Nora does not yet know
During a poignant scene between Celine and Aidan, we discover that in the past Bishop had deliberately stopped her from meeting Aidan to exact revenge. Subsequent to the flashback, Celine gives herself to Aidan to complete his healing process to be ready for the fight for power, a conflict he can no longer avoid.

Being Human S1x13 - Aidan and Celine before her sacrifice
Evil Bishop tells Josh that Aidan is to meet him for the fight to the death or face the consequences threatening Josh’s family in the process. With no apparent way to stop the evil Bishop or the impending conflict, Josh reluctantly delivers the message to Aidan.

Being Human S1x13 - Josh infroms Aidan of the location
Much like in real life there are times when evil intentions must be stopped before the consequences spin out of control. It is not a pleasant thing to do, however putting a stop to rants and the attempts to do harm to others must be taken as a corrective action of the highest priority. It is a tough lesson in life and during Being Human Aidan rises to the task to put an end to Bishops reign of terror.

Being Human S1x13 - Joshs letter to Nora
The final sequences of the episode are superb. Josh is facing a full moon and Nora having read a touching letter from him finally observes his transformation first hand. She is shocked by the truth of his other persona.

Being Human S1x13 - Josh transforms

Being Human S1x13 - Nora is shocked
This metaphoric sequence is also reflective of real life when we learn of the behavior of people in their true nature. The question we all must ask is whether we can forgive people when they go rogue and try to hurt others. The answer I would like to offer is yes, please do so. Do not carry a grudge, it is not worth it and you only harm yourself in the process. Learning to forgive people is critical to the process of Being Human. In this manner Nora forgives Josh for not telling her the truth sooner. It will not be so easy a fate for the evil one Bishop.

Being Human S1x13 - Bishops head is a bowling ball
In the final battle with Bishop, naturally our hero Aidan prevails. I very much enjoyed the severing of Bishops head rolling like a bowling ball rather than the traditional stake to his heart that Sally brought to try and help Aidan. In this action we learned that the mythology of Being Human death can came in another manner. As Aidan dissolved to dust, the question we must consider is this the actual end for the Bishop character in the series?

Being Human S1x13 - Bishop ashes to ash dust to dust

I think not. In science fiction no one really stays dead for long. I am confident we will see more of Bishop in the future during season two, most likely in flashback sequences to round out the story line of his evil deeds and how Aidan and he became enemies.

Lastly the scenes with the three heroes sitting in the apartment were sweet. I say heroes because that is exactly what they intend on becoming, super heroes to fight the forces of evil. Suddenly a knock come on the door. Aidan  tells Josh and Sally it is a pizza delivery. Not!

Being Human S1x13 - The Heroes celebrate

Being Human S1x13 - The Heroes wait for pizza

Being Human S1x13 - Sally is happy too

Of course it is the Dutchman informing Aidan that “she” wants to meet him. Since Aidan is now the leader of the vampires on the eastern seaboard we are left wondering who “she” is? A perfect cliffhanger setting up the second season of the Americanized version of Being Human on Syfy would you not agree?

Being Human S1x13 - The Dutchman appears

Being Human S1x13 - She wants to meet Aidan

I suggest that you watch the entire season one on Syfy before watching the thrilling finale. If you missed any of season one or the finale, you can watch On-Demand on many cable systems such as Comcast or on Syfy Dot Com.

In this week’s episode of Being Human the drama was ratcheted up even further. Just when you think you know what is going to happen, they throw you a little curve ball!

“The only constant in life is change. People as a species are in a constant state of metamorphosis. Just when we get comfortable swimming in the sea, we end up on land. The moment we become accustomed to crawling, we stand on two legs. Our instinct is to resist change, to fear it. So we wrap a pretty word like ‘evolution’ around it and hope that it will make the pill easier to swallow. The thing is, change doesn’t care if you love it or you hate it. Change is indifferent, intractable. And it will not be denied.”

The opening scene for this episode finds Bishop (Mark Pellegrino), Aiden (Sam Witwer) and Marcus (Vincent Leclerc) accompanying the Dutch elders to the Boston nest where they are shown the curtained cubicles with lovely volunteer donors. The elders are having some trouble with the changes that have taken place during their recent 50-year rest, including the idea of merely feeding from donors without killing and having to avoid their favorite feeding ground because it is now a popular tourist spot. They end up herding all of the donors into a single cubicle and ripping them all to pieces in a feeding frenzy.

    Hegeman about to feed

Bishop looks relaxed, even serene, through all this, content to be together with Marcus and Aiden on what he says is their last day. He reveals that someone has betrayed his plans to the elders which, he knows, will mean their certain death.

At work at the hospital, Josh (Sam Huntington) encounters Nora (Kristen Hager) in the hallway. She is still very upset with him, even more so because he disappeared for a couple of days and she had something very important to discuss with him—she is pregnant. Of course, being Josh, he says exactly the wrong thing, questioning whether the baby is his. Nora is deeply offended and Josh fails utterly in gaining her forgiveness.

    Nora is pregnant

Aiden returns to the mortuary to find the still-depressed Rebecca (Sarah Allen) questioning Aiden’s decision to return to Bishop. She thinks Aiden is deluding himself into believing that his presence might make a positive difference in Bishop’s megalomaniacal plans.

    Rebecca

Meanwhile, Sally (Meaghan Rath) is relaxing at the house, reading a magazine, when who should appear but Danny (Gianpaolo Venuta) and Bridget (Angela Galuppo). Apparently, Danny left a message saying he would be coming over with an exterminator but the woman comes across more like a realtor, asking questions about the number of rooms in the house and talking about being able to feel its “energy.” But this lady is neither exterminator nor realtor, she is there to perform an exorcism. Danny is determined to get rid of Sally once and for all.

    Exorcist

Back at the nest, a conversation between Hegeman (Terry Kinney) and Marcus ends any questions we might have had about the identity of Bishop’s traitor. Marcus seems to think that he has made a deal with the elders, his information and cooperation in exchange for Bishop’s death and control of Boston. But Hegeman is more interested in putting things back the way he wants them, which does not necessarily include killing Bishop. There will be a meeting later to determine what will happen next.

With Aiden standing by, Hegeman meets with Bishop. He is concerned about news that Bishop has been creating a larger number of offspring than is permitted, and that Bishop is setting things in motion to go public as a vampire. Bishop argues that vampires are either the “master race” or cowards but Hegeman is firm. He orders Bishop to destroy two-thirds of his children and insists that Bishop will go back to Pennsylvania with the elders, to lie under the earth for at least 50 years. The unstated consequence of Bishop’s refusal to accede to Hegeman’s demands would be Bishop’s certain destruction. Aiden tries to convince Bishop to take the deal, without success.

    Take the deal

At the hospital, Josh must have been really tired because he manages to fall asleep in a busy corridor. He has a terrible nightmare about Nora giving birth to a baby werewolf.

    Werewolf baby

At the house, the exorcism ritual has begun. At first, Sally thinks the whole idea of an exorcism is ridiculous, but soon finds that the practitioner, Alanna (Ellen David), knows what she is doing. Sally is prevented from leaving the house and soon seems to be experiencing some kind of painful transformation. Then, suddenly, she is gone.

Josh is surprised and happy to see Aiden back at work. Josh tells Aiden about Nora and the baby and, to Josh’s great surprise, Aiden thinks this is a good thing. Putting aside the possibility of a bouncing baby werewolf, Josh has the chance for something resembling a real life, which was what they were trying for when he and Aiden moved into that house.

    Congratulations

As Rebecca folds dinner napkins in preparation for the evening’s festivities, Marcus comes in. His resentment of Aiden goes all the way back to the day he was made a vampire. It turns out that Marcus was not Bishop’s first choice. Bishop was after Marcus’s brother, but the brother slit his own throat rather than become a monster so Bishop took Marcus as a substitute. Soon thereafter, though, Bishop found and made Aiden. Marcus tries to establish rapport with Rebecca but makes the mistake of revealing his part in the death of her “child.”

    Marcus and Rebecca

The exorcism has moved through the house, room by room, until they reach the last bedroom. Sally looks like her life energy is being slowly drained away. She has a deathly pallor and can barely speak or move. Bridget suddenly worries about what will happen to Sally’s ghost when the exorcism is complete and wants to stop the ritual, but Danny insists that it continue.

    What will happen to her

    Dinner is served

Dinnertime has finally arrived, Bishop, Aiden and elders seated around the table. “Dinner” is a very pregnant woman (twins, no less), laid out across the length of the table, swollen belly bared. Bishop is ready to get things started but Aiden steps in with a proposition, trying to save Bishop and willing to sacrifice himself in exchange. Marcus tries to take advantage of the situation by suggesting he share control of Boston. Surprisingly, Bishop is not grateful for Aiden’s support but announces his surrender and offers up a toast, encouraging the elders to dig in. He takes a bite and suddenly Hegeman and the others start to look sick.

Bishop is even sneakier that anyone realized. Apparently juniper works as a slow-acting toxin in vampires, and all of the girls (remember the volunteers that the elders devoured on their first night at the nest?) had been ingesting it. Bishop was right to count on the elders’ greed. He had encouraged them to drink from the girls, but their feeding frenzy caused them to be filled with juniper-tainted blood. With the elders sitting helpless, Bishop moves methodically around the table destroying them all, one by one. Aiden grabs Hegeman and carries him out of there, but Marcus follows and attacks Aiden. Just as Aiden is about to be staked, Rebecca appears behind Marcus and stakes him instead, turning him to dust.

    The end of Marcus

At the house, Sally’s ghost is barely hanging on but Danny says one too many selfish things and Sally loses her temper completely. She flies across the room and into Alanna, sharing her memories of the night she died. In Alanna’s body, Sally speaks to Danny and, being Danny, his reaction is to try and choke her to death. When he throws her back against the wall, she comes out of the exorcist’s body again. Alana and Bridget both know the real Danny now.

    You

Danny tries to get the exorcist to finish the ritual but she can’t get out of there fast enough. She throws Danny’s money back in his face and tells him that he deserves whatever Sally does to him. Bridget has had enough of him too. On her way out the door, she apologizes to Sally.

Josh finds Nora at the hospital and sits down to have a serious conversation with her. They are able to clear the air, Josh telling her that he has deep genetic problems that he thought would prevent him from getting anyone pregnant. They agree that they are both unsure about this pregnancy but they have time to think about it.

Josh and Nora talking it out

Aiden and Rebecca have managed to get Hegeman out safely, and he is starting to recover from the effects of the juniper. Aiden begs him to tell the others about Bishop’s plans, to stop him before he can start something that can only lead to mass killings. Hegeman’s parting words were a warning that Aiden should prepare for what is coming.

    Hegeman safe in the alley

Now Rebecca has something to say to Aiden. She warns Aiden to be careful. Bishop’s handling of the elders makes it clear that whatever he is about to do will be well-planned. And then she hands him a stake and asks him to kill her. Her last words before she turns to dust in his arms are “thank you.”

    Rebecca's stake

    The end of Rebecca

    Dust

So the theme of change set out in the opening voiceover has certainly come to pass for everyone. It leaves me a little unsettled, like change often does, wondering what will come next and anxious for something familiar to anchor to.

Sally’s position seems strengthened, although she, herself, looks damaged. Will this experience help her toward her door? Will the damage she suffered continue to show, or will she come back to herself as the ghost she was? Will Danny try some other way to get back at her (or get rid of her)?

Josh’s issues with Nora and her pregnancy were the inevitable consequence of his giving into his desire for her, and for the normalcy of a relationship. I am a little surprised that he pursued that relationship, having so recently given up on the idea of being with his family because of the danger he would pose to them. But maybe he just couldn’t help it. Nora being present in his day-to-day life at work made her too immediate a temptation, particularly as his wolfishness became prominent near the full moon. I wonder how the writers will choose to handle her pregnancy, whether they will wade out into the dangerous waters of abortion, have her carry the baby to term, or (probably the simplest solution) either give her a false-positive pregnancy test or a miscarriage.

Aiden may be experiencing the most profound change of all. He has just come to realize the scope of Bishop’s plans and was so horrified by them that he turned on his own maker (which, as we all know, is a very big deal for a vampire). After so recently being compelled to destroy a child he cared for deeply, now he has had to destroy Rebecca whom he also loved and for whom he felt a terrible responsibility. Aiden is probably the most alone he has ever been in his long life. With Josh and Sally both so enmeshed in their own drama, will they be the anchor Aiden will need to get through this time of upheaval?

    Hi everyone.

This week’s episode recap/review is full of detailed spoilers so please do not read any further if you haven’t watched the episode yet. You have been warned!

Bishop and Aiden carrying one of the Dutch's coffins in 1955

In the opening, Marcus (Vincent Leclerc) and Bishop (Mark Pellegrino) are anxiously waiting at the funeral home garage for the delivery of three coffins. As they arrive there is a flashback to 1955 in the same funeral home garage. At that time Aidan (Sam Witwer) was still part of the vampire family and was helping Bishop unload the same three coffins. While they unload, Aidan is mercilessly teasing Bishop about his relationship with a human woman, Jane (Lena Kleine). Aidan believes Bishop’s relationship is a way of turning his back on the family. Bishop just thinks it is complicated and that he will find a way to make it work.

Before the Dutch, the vampire family elders, awaken from their sleep, Carlo (Lorne Brass), the head of Boston family, allows Bishop to go see Jane. It is interesting to note that the roles are reversed between Bishop and Aidan. Bishop was more understanding and open to love like Aidan is in the present. Aidan, on the other hand, was exactly like Bishop in the present with his attitude and way of thinking. Aidan was all about putting the vampire family first. To have anything put ahead of the family is considered shameful and turning one’s back on the vampire empire. Bishop did believe in the vampire family, but his love for Jane put her and his love before the family.

    Aiden trying to comfort Rebecca

Back in the present, Rebecca (Sarah Allen) angrily shoves Aidan against the wall of the funeral home. Aidan tries to explain to her that it is difficult to control a vampire child so he had to kill Bernie (Jason Spevack). Rebecca doesn’t want to believe his explanation. She thinks he could have taught Bernie to control himself if he only would have given him a chance. This wasn’t easy on Aidan either. He hates himself for having to kill Bernie. Aidan does his best to try and comfort Rebecca. She reveals that Bernie was the closest thing she could have had to a son.

Bishop intervenes and lets them know the Dutch will awaken soon. Aidan is surprised to hear that they have arrived and tells Rebecca who they are and to be careful. She is still too heartbroken from Bernie’s death to care for her own safety and tells Aidan she doesn’t care who they are and refuses any kind of protection from Aidan. She runs out of the funeral home, leaving Aidan and Bishop behind.

Bishop invites Aidan to come along with him to welcome the Dutch when they finally awaken from their slumber. Aidan argues that he is no longer part of the family so he doesn’t need to be there and pretend to be on his best behavior. Bishop nonchalantly threatens Aidan that he will tell the Dutch what kind of lifestyle Aiden lives now. He tells Aidan the life he leads is an insult to the empire the Dutch have built and that they do have an interest in him.

Sally and Josh talking on the front steps

Meanwhile back at the house, Josh (Sam Huntington) is husking corn for Nora (Kristen Hager) while talking to Sally (Meaghan Rath) on the front steps. Sally is glad to see that Josh is happy with the way things are going with Nora. I think it was smart of Josh to put on his Bluetooth so he doesn’t look like a crazy person talking to himself when in actuality he is talking to Sally. Unfortunately for Sally, things didn’t work out between her and Nick. Josh lets her know that he feels almost like a person when he is with Nora. He also tells Sally that she is a part of something with him and Aidan. She wants intention or to do something to be more helpful. Josh tells Sally he will be right back and heads around the corner of the house when screeching wheels are heard. Sally calls out for Josh, but he is nowhere to be found.

    Bishop and Jane kissing

Flashback to 1955, Bishop is in love with Jane. They are sitting outside while she is having lunch at work. Bishop tries to convince Jane that it would be a good idea for him to turn her so they can be together forever. She does want to be with Bishop, but she refuses because she believes it is not natural and that they would be cheating God. It is interesting to note that Jane worked at what looks like the same hospital where both Josh and Aidan work. I wonder if it pains Bishop to go back to that same hospital now that he is a police officer.

Aiden and Bishop talking at the hospital

Jane heads back to work leaving Bishop sitting by himself with a metal box. Inside is a diamond ring. Aidan whistles at the sight of it. He tells Bishop to just turn her and that way they can be together like they want. Plus it would end the “complicated” part of the relationship. Bishop wants to turn her, but respects her decision and her humanity. Aidan doesn’t seem to get what Bishop is talking about. He tells Bishop he has been summoned to help Aidan show the Dutch around town. Bishop doesn’t want go back right then, not yet. It is obvious he would rather try to convince his love to let him turn her. Aidan reminds him that turning his back on his family isn’t a good idea and that his family needs him now. Before Aidan leaves, he suggests that Bishop should just turn her and that she will thank him for it later.

Hegeman drinking while Marcus and Bishop watch

Back in the present, Bishop is nervously waiting for the Dutch to awaken. Marcus’s alarm on his phone goes off signaling the time the Dutch are to rise from their sleep. Hegeman (Terry Kinney) is the first to wake and asks for a drink. Instead of taking the cup of blood he takes the entire pitcher. Bishop welcomes him after 50 years of sleep. The other vampires finally wake from their sleep as well.

Josh caged in and meets Douglas

Meanwhile, Josh awakens in a cage. A man stands on the outside of Josh’s cage and introduces himself as Douglas (Vlasta Vrana), but the vampires call him the Professor. He tells Josh that they are both werewolves and that they are there to entertain the vampires. It is a sport the vampires like to watch. They love to watch them turn into werewolves and force them to fight each other to the death. Vampires make bets on who will win. The Professor says that they keep the winning werewolf locked up for 29 days until the next fight. Josh wants out, but Douglas lets him know that it is futile because the vampires are stronger than they are. Josh learns that Douglas has been kept there for the last 15 years and that he is the next werewolf to face him when he turns.

The elders question Bishop’s reasons for minor decisions made with the funeral home. Aidan walks into the room and welcomes the Dutch. Bishop announces the entertainment for the evening is wolves. He tries to tell the Dutch what else he has planned for the next day, but Hegeman cuts him off and tells him they will be leaving tomorrow.

The Dutch inspect Douglas and Josh

With that, Bishop leads them to where they are holding Josh and Douglas. Aidan is shocked to see Josh caged, but tries to conceal his true feelings. Josh is surprised to see Aidan taking part with the group. The werewolves are told to line up side by side. Aidan is the one giving the orders as the Dutch inspect Douglas and Josh. Douglas knows the routine and does what he is told without question. Josh, on the other hand, does question each order but in the end complies. While the elders approve of the werewolves, Bishop quietly tells Aidan that getting Josh was a spur of the moment decision. I highly doubt that, but I am sure Bishop just wanted to get under Aidan’s skin.

The Dutch kill Carlo as Bishop and Aiden watch

Flashback to the funeral home garage in 1955, the elders ask Bishop where he went while they were wakening from their sleep. He tells them it was because of personal business. Carlo comes back to the room and apologizes as he was attending to a viewing. Shortly after he enters the room the elders attack and kill Carlo as both Aidan and Bishop watch. Bishop had to hold Aidan back as Carlo was attacked. It would be Aidan to question why they killed him. The elders question Bishop as to why he didn’t stand up for Carlo since Carlo was the one who turned him and allowed him to have a romantic relationship with Jane. The elders tell Bishop that he has fallen, but they want to bring him back up. Bishop surprisingly says there is nothing they can do for him. They decide to give him the leadership over Boston on the condition that he give up the girl. Bishop surprisingly says no to Aidan’s disbelief.

Back to present day, Douglas realizes that Josh knew at least one of the vampires that were part of the inspection group. While locked up, Josh is angrily trying to find a way to get out and hopes Douglas will help. Then Josh realizes that the Professor isn’t locked up because he no longer wants to escape. He doesn’t want to hurt anyone if he does escape. In his mind it is safer to be locked up with the vampires. Josh takes a moment to breathe and notices Douglas constantly writing in a notebook. He wants to know what Douglas is doing with all his notes. Josh lets him know he had a notebook with all of his observations about being a werewolf. He thought he could find a way to stop the transformation. Douglas asks if he was able to find a solution. Josh simply doesn’t answer.

    Douglas showing Josh his notebook

Back at the house, Sally tells Aidan that Josh is gone. He tells her that he knew that already. He is frantically searching for the keys to the funeral home, but won’t let Sally help him. Sally takes things into her own hands and finds Josh in the funeral home basement where he is being held. Sally lets him know that the vampires do not like ghosts and they tried to get rid of her with a tire iron. Meanwhile, Josh introduces Sally to Douglas. She is a bit bewildered that Josh is not freaking out or scared that he is imprisoned by vampires. He lets her know that he is, but is also a bit fascinated with what Douglas has written in his notebook. Josh also is not sure that Aidan is on his side anymore because he hasn’t gotten him out yet. Sally is shocked to find out that Josh has to fight Douglas in the arena in order to live.

Josh tells Sally he has to kill Douglas to live

    Sally questions Aiden's loyalty

Aidan returns to the funeral home and finds Rebecca still mourning Bernie’s death. He tries to ask Rebecca for help to get Josh out. Rebecca refuses to help Aidan. She tells him to ask Bishop in a really nice way to let Josh out. Sally finds them and tells Aidan to find a way to get Josh out. Rebecca is amazed to know that Sally has seen her on the video she made for Aidan. Rebecca once again leaves in anger. She asks Aidan how he can choose those monsters over her and Josh. Aidan confesses that he is one of them. She reminds Aidan that he has committed to a new life with her and Josh, to be a good guy, not a monster. She wonders when he is going to take a stand.

Aiden lectures Bishop where his priorities should lie

Flashback to 1955 in the funeral home garage, Aidan tells Bishop that all he had to do was say yes and Boston would be his. He lets Bishop know that he is turning his back on the empire that the Dutch built for them. He calls Bishop a hypocrite for taking Aidan away from his family and his life. When he made Aiden a vampire, Bishop told Aidan that he was joining something special and it is a way of celebrating their immortality. Instead, Bishop is throwing it away for a woman. Aidan lets him know that he used to honor and fear him, but now he doesn’t see the same vampire anymore. Bishop quietly tells him that he can’t lose the woman he loves, to which Aidan replies Bishop will lose him instead. He can support him and that means the elders will kill him unless he kills her. Aidan says, “…either I leave you now or I’ll betray you later.” It is a very poignant statement or ultimatum for Bishop to deal with.

Back at the funeral home basement, there are bets being made and music playing before the werewolves are let in. Aidan makes his way to Bishop and tells him to let Josh go. Bishop brushes off his suggestion. Aidan finally tells him that he will come back to the family, more specifically to Bishop, but only if Josh is set free. Bishop smiles because he has been waiting for Aidan to come back where he belongs.

Bishop smiling, Aiden is returning to the family

    Josh begins to turn

Marcus goes to Josh and teases him like he is a puppy dog. He orders Josh to undress. Sally stays by his side and tells him not to be scared by Marcus or any of the others. Marcus takes Josh and has him strapped down to a chair in the middle of the arena, naked. Josh stares at Aidan. I am not sure if he was hoping Aidan could do something to help him get out. As the last strap is placed on Josh he begins to turn. Once fully a wolf, he breaks free of his restraints and begins to circle around the arena snarling at the vampires. Bishop tries to tell the Dutch that the older wolf is sick and that it is not fair to have them fight, so Hegeman tells Bishop to have some of his men fight the werewolf. Bishop is not happy with the idea, but before anything happens, the Professor, now a werewolf, comes out to join Josh in the arena. Sally is there watching in horror. The two werewolves circle one another before clawing at one another. Not much is seen after Douglas makes the first strike and they claw at one another a couple of times. The only thing heard was the whimpering sound of a hurt werewolf. The fight ends early.

The two werewolves circling each other

Aiden telling Josh and Sally he's going back to Bishop

Back at the house, Josh is flipping through Douglas’s notebook. Josh killed him to get free. Josh tells Aidan he doesn’t know how he will live with himself for killing Douglas. Aidan lets him know that he understands what Josh is going through and that it will stay with him. Josh finally asks Aidan why they chose him to fight Douglas. Aidan doesn’t give a straight answer. He tells them that something in his past finally caught up with him. He also tells him Bishop did him a favor so he made him a promise to go back. Aidan said it is a code of honor he needs to respect. Both Josh and Sally do not understand where the honor is in going back to Bishop and the family. Aidan tells them that it was the only way to get Josh free, but Josh will not accept his explanation. Josh doesn’t know how he or Sally can trust Aidan again if he can’t stay away from the other vampires.

    Bishop choking Jane to death

Flashback to 1955, Bishop goes to visit the woman he loves, Jane, at her work. He tells her that everything is alright. He admits it is not natural for them to be together. He also admits that she is a temptation and a weakness for him. He proceeds to place his hands on her face as they talk and slowly moves his hands to her neck. Once his hands are around her neck he proceeds to choke her to death, all the while looking into her eyes. He picks up her limp body and places it on one of the hospital beds and quietly slips away.

Bishop reveals shocking news to Aiden

Back to the present, Aidan catches up with Bishop to help him show the Dutch around Boston. He knows the elders are only there to judge what is going on. Bishop asks the Dutch if they are ready for dinner. They agree that they are, and walk ahead after a group of young women. This allows Aidan and Bishop to speak privately for a moment. Aidan asks what the real reason is for the elders’ visit. Bishop nonchalantly tells him that he is sure that tomorrow they will kill him like they did Carlo 50 years ago. Aidan is shocked by the news and, I am sure, by Bishop’s indifference. The episode ends with Aidan still trying to take in the news that was just given to him before walking after Bishop.

Well, that’s it for now. Make sure to check out next week’s episode “Going Dutch” on Syfy to find out what happens next. We include the promotional trailer for your pleasure

Being Human: Season 1 Episode 9 – I Want You Back (From The Dead) – The Price People Pay

Being Human 2011 Season One Banner

Greeting Being Human and Syfy fans,

Click to learn more about Being Human on Syfy! The episode “I Want You Back (From the Dead)” is a poignant episode that has several analogs to real life as they relate to relationships, offspring and the adults that raise them (or attempt to do so). As you should be well aware of by now, I do not favor recapping an episode. Instead I look at the Single Effect and the meaningful messages being imparted to the viewing audience. This is what you will learn about what it means in each of our searches for Being Human.

When we last left our erstwhile trio of ghost, werewolf and vampire, they were continuing their struggle in Being Human with varied degrees of success and failure. Success has been achieved by Sally (Meaghan Rath) in being freed from being bound to the home she was apparently trapped in.

Being Human S1x09 - Sally reads Ghostly Messages

Being Human S1x09 - Ghostly Messages
Now apparently free to meet other ghosts Sally has enjoyed a modicum of freedom of movement away from the residence.  We also observed Josh (Sam Huntington) during his once monthly reversion to werewolf much to Sally’s sheer shock. More on that transformation fear later.

Failure for Aidan (Sam Witwer) in his attempt to establish a relationship with Cindy Lanham (Cindy Sampson) and her son Bernie (Jason Spevack) while Rebecca Flynt (Sarah Allen) warned him of the consequences of attempting a normal relationship between mortal human beings and the immortal caste of vampires and lycans (werewolves) and ghosts.

Being Human S1x09 - Aidan and Bernie

As we begin “I Want You Back (From the Dead)” we see Sally roaming the old wing of the hospital reading messages while the narration states “That awful need to touch someone, the need to be touched. For some of us it just will not die. And eventually that need will take you to your breaking point”. This message is clear advice to all to not become obsessed with attempting to find happiness in others. Happiness lies with each of us if only we can find it over and above gripping too tightly to other things or people in our lives.

Being Human S1x09 - Price a parent pays in holding on too tightly

As we observe, Sally will soon become reacquainted with an old friend, Nick Fenn (Pat Kielly) of course now a ghost as well. As viewers of this fine adult program are aware, Sally is able to move outside the apartment freed of her being bound there to her former lover. Sounds like good news to me that she is free to roam. Or is it?

Being Human S1x09 - Sally roaming free

Josh, despite growling at Nora (Kristen Hager) in the previous episode during a romantic encounter, is now observed in the hospital cafeteria caressing her gently desperately seeking to expand their relationship oblivious to the obvious risks associated with such matters. His greatest fear is that he will revert to a werewolf during intimate relations with as we see in a nightmare he experiences.

Being Human S1x09 - Josh with his greatest dream

Being Human S1x09 - Josh and his greatest fear
We segue to Aidan looking out onto the street watching poor Bernie get bullied once again by the neighborhoods street toughs. Forbidden by Cindy from ever seeing or interacting with Bernie again after the little cherub stole a vampire DVD which his mother Cindy found, our heart breaks for Aidan. Then the unspeakable happens. Being pushed around by the bullies, Bernie tries to escape only to be tragically run down by a passing motorist. Poor Bernie is severely injured in the accident and later perishes from his injuries .

Being Human S1x09 - Bernie is near death
His mother Cindy Lanham is observed obviously feeling guilty for having forbidden Aidan from looking after the young lad. More tragic circumstances will result from this incident

    Being Human S1x09 - A mothers nightmare

Tragically we learn more about the fate of young Bernie later in the episode who is saved from death by being turned into a vampire by Rebecca in what she considers an act of kindness. Things do not turn out as planned when young vampire Bernie feeds on and kills three young victims during the feeding process. Naturally Bishop (Mark Pellegrino) becomes aware of the murders and confronts Aidan who has stashed Bernie with Rebecca at her apartment. As a young vampire, Bernie wants fresh warm blood not the bagged type being stolen from local blood banks at the hospital. The tragic results are depicted below.

Being Human S1x09 - Bernie has lunch
The episode also revolves around the challenges Sally faces in her search for a new soul mate. As one of the three main cast characters who develops a romantic relationship with Nick, kissing him and “feeling it” in the process we are encouraged by these developments.

Being Human S1x09 - Sally feels it

Unfortunately Nick has similar problems as Sally. He is not able to maintain a “solid” ghostly shape often disintegrating into a watery splash. At least Sally is able to roam freely in search of the answers to her life. With regard to this factor of “Being Human she is fortunate to have found Nick.

Being Human S1x09 - Sally seeks answers to her loneliness

Being Human S1x09 - Is Nick to be the soul mate for Sally?
I suggest that people  learn to be introspective about their lives, what they are trying to hide and the impact their actions have on others. The answers to life’s challenges reside within us, not as the result of our dependence on others, either adult, child, friend, or lover. What we each need to do is squarely address our problems. The answers are in our own hands of fate so to speak. The blaming of others for one’s own problems, claiming to know better that trained experts, refusing to even contemplate well considered advice is a recipe for personal disaster. Sadly this type of behavior results in the downfall of many human beings in their quest in Being Human.

Tragically Bernie will not die once, but twice. After being “saved” by Rebecca Flynt by conversion to immortal vampire status, Aidan is forced to kill the lad with a stake to the heart rather than see him become enslaved to a life of slaughtering other young children in his blood lust. Aidan himself is heartbroken by having to perform this ruthless act but realizes that he cannot fulfill his desire to replace his own family lost in a past tragedy we have yet to learn about.

Being Human S1x09 - Aidan does the unthinkable

Here too there is a valuable lesson in life to be learned. Many people (couples or single parents) seek having children as a way to fill the void they feel in their own lives. They use their children to gain attention for themselves by living their lives vicariously through the challenges faced by their child and or children. Such is a fools quest. Parenting is not about using your child to make up for your own past failures or shortcomings  Nor is it about using your children to draw attention to one’s self. Parenting is about dedicating your life to the enrichment of others by making great sacrifices about things a parent might desire to pursue themselves.

Aidan learns this lesson at a great price. The real question is whether people (parents) who use their children to draw attention or sympathy to themselves are capable of internalizing this lesson in life?

Being Human S1x09 - Aidan and the price he pays

Being Human returns in the next great episode “Dog Eat Dog” which also has valuable lessons in the price people pay for their selfish ways. I suggest that you do not miss the next outstanding episode on Syfy.

    * * * * * * * * * *

This week’s episode is built around the idea that we all lie to ourselves and each other, some more successfully than others.  The opening voiceover:

One of mankind’s greatest abilities is the power to lie.  Whether it’s for good or bad, profit or survival, we bend the truth.  It’s a skill we pick up early and hone over time.  Pulling the wool over the eyes of our parents, our teachers, our boss, even ourselves.  We tell ourselves we’ll lose weight, quit smoking, that at the end of the day, we’re really a good person.  What happens when we call our own bluff, when we can’t convince ourselves that deep down we really aren’t the stuff of nightmares?

[Awesome song playing the opening sequence by The High Dials, called “Killer of Dragons.” You can see the music video at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQtHM_uibEU.]

This week’s action starts out with Aiden (Sam Witwer) doing a little surruptitious video viewing in his bedroom.  He has hidden Rebecca’s (Sarah Allen) vampire erotica DVD between the pages of a book.  The viewing doesn’t get very far, though, because Josh pops in to get him. Sally (Meaghan Rath) is insisting that Josh (Sam Huntington) and Aiden take her to the bar.

    At the bar

At the bar, they see Nora (Kristen Hager) with a man who turns out to be a Dr. Reed who works at the hospital.  [Am I crazy or did the hospital have a different name during the first few episodes?  It is now the Suffolk County Hospital.]  Sally goes over to eavesdrop and decides Nora’s interaction with Dr. Reed is too much like a date and causes the good doctor’s beer to shatter.  Sally wants Josh to take the opportunity to go over and talk to Nora, but Josh is uncomfortable and leaves.  Sally did say the Josh was rockin’ the sweater vest.

The next day at work, Josh mops the floor while he and Aiden watch Nora with Dr. Reed.  As Aiden tells Josh that he should definitely have made a move last night, Sally pops in for a visit.  Aiden is glad to see her because he wants to show her something.  He takes her to the original hospital building that was built in 1878 and closed down in 1989.  He wants Sally to see it because it is extremely haunted.  Sally is nervous and doesn’t want to go in by herself, but Aiden says he can’t go with her because he is responsible for some of the ghosts in there.  Reluctantly, Sally goes in.  What she finds is a corridor that slowly fills with deeply unsettled ghosts and ghostly messages inscribed on every available surface, mostly either desperate pleas for help to move on or looking for some lost loved one.  Sally is really freaked out.

    Sally meets the hospital ghosts

As Aiden walks home from the hospital, he encounters two neighborhood bullies picking on Bernie (Jason Spevack), the little boy that lives across the street.  Aiden gets rid of the bullies by outing one of them as a bedwetter.  I guess that enhanced vampire sense of smell can be a blessing and a curse.  Bernie has forgotten his keys and his mom won’t be home for a while.  He asks Aiden if he can wait for his mom at Aiden’s place in case the bullies come back.  Aiden definitely thinks it is a bad idea, but finally agrees.

Nora approaches Josh at the hospital and asks where he has been hiding.  Nora asks about Josh’s sister, Emily, and small talk quickly moves to Josh telling Nora that he happened to see her with Dr. Reed at the bar.  He takes the opportunity to clarify with Nora whether her outing with Dr. Reed was a date.  He also says he wants to go out with her again, and she invites him to her place for dinner that same night.  While they are working out the details, Sally pops in right behind Nora and starts shouting at Josh about what she has just seen and experienced in the old hospital wing.  Poor Josh is having a terrible time trying to hear Nora over Sally’s shouting, and trying to respond to Nora coherently.  Sally gets exasperated and knocks over a cart just down the hall.  This freaks Nora out and she leaves, after confirming Josh will be coming over for dinner that night.

    Everyone talking at once

At the house, Aiden is playing Go Fish with Bernie.  When Josh and Sally get home, Josh is excitedly sharing the news that Nora had been at the bar with Dr. Reed for an after-dinner drink—not a date—and Josh has a date with her tonight.  At the same time, Sally is calling Aiden names for sending her into the freak show hallway of death.  Josh is surprised to see a kid in the house, but completely understands the problem when Bernie tells him about getting bullied.  Josh seems to be very familiar with the details of what it is like to be a victim of bullying.  Josh distracts Bernie so Aiden can go into another room to talk with Sally.  Sally is really angry but Aiden was just trying to help her get a different perspective on her situation.  He tells her that if she doesn’t start doing things differently, after a while she will be just like the creepy spirits she insists are not like her, “searching for the pieces of a puzzle that doesn’t even exist anymore.”  Sally forgives him (sort of) and asks about Bernie.  She says, “Are you telling me you’re a kid person?”  Aiden flashes back to a scene from his life, a happy time with his son.  His reverie is interrupted by Bernie’s mom, Cindy (Cindy Sampson) arriving to pick up her son.  She is upset that Bernie has gone into a stranger’s house but she also seems a little taken with Aiden.

    Playing cards

As Josh prepares to head over to Nora’s for his big date, Sally checks him out to make sure he is properly prepared (antiperspirant and breath being the two major considerations).  Sally has no sense of smell anymore and Aiden thinks Josh just smells like dog, so neither are any help in that regard.  Josh is worried because this is the night before the full moon and he knows that on the eve of transformation he is more aggressive than usual.  Sally and Aiden encourage Josh to “be the wolf.”

    First date

The date is a big success, at least most of it.  Josh and Nora have finished their meal and work their way through some awkward small talk, but then Nora makes the first move and it looks like they are going to go to a higher level of intimacy.  But as Josh starts to let go and really experience the moment, a low growl escapes his lips.  Nora doesn’t notice but Josh is a little freaked out.  He jumps up, makes some lame excuse, and leaves Nora standing in her apartment wondering what just happened.  [The song playing during this scene is called “New Kanada” by Solid Gold.]

Aiden arrives home again to see Bernie hanging out on the steps.  Bernie invites Aiden to play with him and Bernie’s mom gives permission.  She says something I didn’t quite understand.  She tells Aiden, “I guess there’s no guidebook for how to handle this, is there?…Letting him go.  Be a normal kid and all that.”  I wonder what she means by that.  Is there something about Bernie that is not normal?

    Manic vacuuming

Back at the house, Josh is vacuuming the same spot over and over.  Looking up from the newspaper, Sally asks if he wants to talk about whatever is bothering him.  He tells her that when he was with Nora, he growled.  Nora didn’t notice but it bothered Josh because he lost control.  Sally insists that Josh deserves to be with Nora but Josh feels that Nora deserves to be with someone normal, like Dr. Reed, instead of someone like Josh.  Sally just tells Josh that his life, even as a werewolf, is far better than her existence, which is no life at all.  She feels like he is only a wolf one day a month and that the rest of the time he gets to have a job, friends, all the things that make up a normal life.  Sally says she would kill to have his life or any life.

At the Park, Aiden is kicking the ball around with Bernie.  He teases Bernie about playing outside instead of being indoors playing videogames.  Bernie talks a little about his father.  He says he doesn’t really remember him, but he remembers that his dad had a boat and he remembers going out on the boat once.  Aiden shares that when he was young he wanted to take over his dad’s printing press but the war interfered (he doesn’t say which war, of course).  Bernie thinks it’s cool that Aiden was a soldier and wants to know if he ever killed anyone.  Aiden evades the question, saying there is nothing good about war.  As they talk, Bernie trips and falls, scraping a small cut on his hand.  He tries to show it to Aiden, but Aiden looks away.  I wondered about that, since Aiden works with bleeding people at the hospital all the time.  Was it because he felt something for Bernie that he was afraid to look at his bleeding hand?  Wouldn’t he also smell the blood and be drawn to it anyway?  What would be the additional harm in looking?  By his expression, I thought at first that Aiden saw or smelled something in Bernie’s blood, maybe something wrong with it.  A disease maybe?  But apparently not.  Anyway, as they are standing there contemplating Bernie’s injured hand, Rebecca shows up.

    Scraped hand

Rebecca and Aiden in the park

Aiden goes over to talk with Rebecca, who claims she had nothing to do with Marcus’s attack on Emily outside the bar.  In fact, she didn’t even know about it until Aiden tells her, right then, in the park.  Aiden is definitely very drawn to her.  They hold hands and stand very near each other, breathing each other’s scent.  It is a very intimate moment in such a public place with little Bernie right there.  Aiden, eyes closed, experiences some flashbacks of Rebecca’s snuff film (a.k.a. vampire erotica), making his awareness of her and his attraction to her even stronger in this moment.  But he gets it together and, as he moves to go back to Bernie, Rebecca says she has been watching Aiden with the boy and thinks he must have been a good father once.

Back at the hospital, Josh hurries down the deserted corridor, heading for the safety of his basement room.  It is getting late and he will change soon.  Unexpectedly, Nora appears in front of him in the corridor and insists that they need to talk right now.  She pulls him into one of the rooms and locks the door.  She thinks she knows what is going on, and why Josh ran out the night before just when things were heating up.  But it is not that Josh is shy; quite the opposite.  When she asks Josh if he is attracted to her, it only takes moments for him to go for it.  Josh is an animal (not literally yet!), aggressive, passionate, and Nora seems to like it.  [The song playing during this scene is called “Iamloved” by Catlow.]

    Josh and Nora

Meanwhile, back at the house, Aiden and Bernie have just finished watching Evan Almighty, Bernie’s favorite movie.  Aiden suggests Bernie should try some Three Stooges and sends him upstairs to Aiden’s room to pick out some DVDs.  While Bernie is upstairs, his mom comes by to pick him up and ends up flirting with Aiden.

    Bernie

Meanwhile, Nora is appreciating the results of Josh’s unexpected advances but Josh is panicking.  The moon is almost up and he has to get to his basement room fast.  He runs out without a word and makes a bee line for the basement, but when he gets there, two nurses are hanging out, smoking and talking.  Now he is really in trouble.  He runs back to the house and tells Aiden and Sally to move as many breakables as they can and get out of there.  He is going to have to transform in the house and there are only a few minutes to spare.  Aiden cranks up the stereo to mask Josh’s screams and runs out but Sally stays behind.  Josh can’t hurt her and she wants to see what happens to him.  What she sees is a lot more than she ever imagined.  As Josh the wolf leaps to attack her, Sally disapparates and reappears out on the front stoop with Aiden.  Now she understands what Josh goes through every four weeks and what he becomes.

    Sally wants to watch

    Sally meets wolf Josh

    Josh the wolf

    Josh the wolf closeup

In the morning, Josh moves through the devastation in the kitchen, picking up broken bits of crockery and piling them into a green garbage bag.  When Sally comes down, he apologizes to her, saying he never wanted to bring that to their home.  But Sally apologizes to Josh for her remarks of the day before, about how at least he has a life that she would kill for.  Now that she has seen him as the wolf, Sally understands Josh’s reluctance to form personal relationships.  But now Josh wants Sally to get out of there.  Nora is coming over, he has to clear away as much of the mess as possible, and Sally tends to make strange things happen around Nora (like bursting beer bottles and toppling hospital carts).

    Morning after

Aiden is helping Josh clean up the wreckage when Bernie’s mom comes to the door.  She is holding a broken DVD and she is really angry.  Of course the DVD is Rebecca’s vampire porn which Bernie took when he went to Aiden’s room for the Stooges discs.  Bernie’s mom thinks Aiden is some kind of pervert that he would expose a little boy to pornography.  Luckily for Aiden, all Bernie and his mom saw of the movie was the first part, before all the vampire teeth and blood.  But the damage is done.  Aiden tries to explain, and Bernie admits he saw the disc in Aiden’s room and just took it, but Bernie’s mom warns Aiden to stay away from her son.  Josh is angry with Aiden too, because Aiden lied about how he felt about that disc and his promise to get rid of it.

    One angry mom

    Disappointed Josh

Nora shows up while Josh is taking out the trash.  They have a good talk about what happened the night before, Josh apologizes for running out on her like that, and they agree that although they both enjoyed the animal sex, they both usually prefer a little romance.  And then the kissing begins.

    Nora likes Josh

Aiden, in the house, sees Bernie playing outside through the window curtains.  But Bernie sees him too and waves, and Aiden hastily moves away.

Sally goes back to the haunted hospital wing and inscribes her own plea on the wall: Sally Malik.  Ghost.  Can you help me move on?

[The song playing during the closing sequence is called “Save the Day” by Pacifica (now spelled “Pacifika“).  It seems to be out of print and I was not able to locate an mp3 online for download.  Interesting side note: Pacifika also did song called “Me cai” on a Season 2 episode of True Blood.]

    * * * * * * * * * *

We were left at the end of last week’s episode with everyone rushing to the hospital after Emily’s brutal attack. I was personally left curious as to why Marcus (Vincent Leclerc) was content with merely damaging her, and how he managed to keep himself in check when her blood started to flow from her wounds. Now we find Emily (Alison Louder), bruised and stitched but otherwise okay, being interviewed by Bishop (Mark Pellegrino) (as if he didn’t already know what was going on!). Josh (Sam Huntington) is also, understandably I think, very angry with Aiden (Sam Witwer) for his failure to watch over Emily. Josh doesn’t know that Aiden was distracted by Rebecca (Sarah Allen), and we don’t know whether Rebecca was there to distract Aiden for Marcus’s sake, or for her own.

    Bishop interviewing Emily

When Aiden figures out that it was Marcus who attacked Emily, he assumes it was on Bishop’s orders. But Bishop puts that notion to rest, telling Aiden that Marcus was merely taking revenge on Josh. (Remember that Josh and Ray attacked the vampires just before the last full moon, and Josh had personally given Marcus a pretty good beating.) Aiden urges Josh to take Emily and get out of town fast while he stays behind to try and figure out a solution. Josh convinces Emily to leave town with him, but she would only agree if Josh promises to take her home, to their parents’ house.

Meanwhile, Sally (Meaghan Rath) goes to Danny’s place and tries to warn Bridget (Angela Galuppo) about Danny (Gianpaolo Venuta), but Bridget doesn’t want to hear it. Sally tells Aiden that she feels responsible for Bridget being with Danny in the first place, since she gave them her blessing (before she remembered that Danny was a psycho). Aiden suggests that maybe Sally has to find a way to make Danny stop before she can move on and find her door.

    Aiden talking with Sally

It is an emotional journey home for Josh. Driving through the dark and the rain, Emily asleep at his side, he is flooded with memories of his first transformation.

Mom (Jennifer Morehouse) doesn’t seem to be all that excited about Josh’s unexpected homecoming. She merely thanks him for bringing Emily home, then turns all her attention on Emily, leaving Josh standing at the door with his hands full of their luggage.

    Josh driving in the rain

Josh gets stuck with the luggage

Marcus tries to justify his attack on Emily with Bishop, saying that if Aiden had been attacked by “a pack of dogs” he would have done the same thing. But Bishop is not sympathetic. Marcus is reminded, once again, of Bishop’s preference for Aiden.

Upstairs in his attic room, Josh is going through a box of old stuff. His mom calls upstairs to tell him she is cooking chicken and would he like some? Josh has had enough of his mom’s weird behavior and asks Emily about it. Emily explains that their mom is terrified of losing him so she will not say anything. And, by the way, Dad (John Maclaren) doesn’t live here anymore. Their parents split up right after Josh disappeared.

    Josh's journal

Josh tells his parents that he is sorry for whatever part he had in splitting them up but that he is fine now. Imagine his complete surprise when his dad asks him, “How long have you thought you were a werewolf?” Apparently, Emily found Josh’s personal journal and gave it to their parents. Josh assures them that he is not a werewolf, and that the journal isn’t really a journal, it is notes for a graphic novel. His parents relent for the moment, and they all agree to eat first and talk again later.

Sally goes to Danny’s house to try and scare him into changing his ways. She messes with the television, the lights, throws and breaks things. At first it looks like he is afraid, but he is more of a psycho than anyone realized. He can’t see or hear her, but he knows that Sally is there. He tells her that she is more pathetic as a ghost than she was when she was alive. He says, “You don’t scare me. Because I know you’re nothing. You’re dead, and I’m alive…and I’m happy. Finally.” He really gets to Sally with that, and she disappears.

As Josh and his dad sit at the dinner table waiting for the ladies, Josh tells his dad, “So, at least you’ve got your next book, right? Mom has a breakdown, Emily starts kissing girls, and your son thinks he’s a werewolf. It’s pretty much the psychotherapy jackpot, don’t you think?” Emily is apologizing for giving them Josh’s journal when the doorbell rings. Surprise! It’s Aiden. What is he doing there? Aiden has come to help Josh convince his parents that everything is okay. It’s going well until Aiden has an unexpected reaction to the food. That chicken was cooked with garlic, and garlic makes vampires become, well, more like vampires. Aiden’s teeth are extended and his eyes go all black. Time for a soothing chamomile bath. [Note the “Celine” tattoo on Aiden’s chest. Television Blend asked about it in a recent interview with Sam Witwer. All he would say was that the tattoo is significant but for now it will have to remain a mystery.]

Being Human S1x07 - Aidens Celine tattoo

    Aiden in the bath

But while Aiden is soaking in the tub, yet another unexpected visitor shows up at the door. What the heck is Marcus doing there? Okay, Josh’s family is really going to think he is nuts now. When Josh sees Marcus talking to his dad at the front door, he freaks. He slams the door in Marcus’s face, grabs the carving knife from the diningroom table, and tells his father that if Marcus gets into the house, his dad should cut Marcus’s head off. He runs upstairs to get Aiden, but Aiden is way ahead of him. Aiden goes after Marcus in the yard and they fight, while Josh runs around inside the house, finally grabbing a small wooden table that he breaks into a serviceable stake. But Marcus refuses to finish the fight and walks away. He is not willing to face the consequences of Bishop’s anger if Marcus were to do anything to really hurt Aiden.

    Marcus at the door

You need to cut his head off

    Josh is crazy

    Josh has a stake

Having failed to have any impact on Danny, Sally goes back to Bridget and tries to convince her that Danny is dangerous. She moves Bridget’s hand to write, “Danny killed me” on Bridget’s grocery list. That got Bridget’s attention.

    Sally and Bridget

    He killed me

As expected, Josh’s family thinks he is completely crazy Of course, they didn’t see Marcus fighting outside with Aiden. All they saw was Josh running around like a lunatic, talking about cutting someone’s head off and making crude weapons out of the hallway furniture. But they are sympathetic and offer to help him with “whatever this is.” Finally, he just tells them the truth. With Emily standing nearby, Josh tells his parents that his journal is not a graphic novel, it is really happening to him. Josh tells his family that he is a werewolf.

Bridget asks Danny again about how Sally died and finally gets him to admit that he killed her. But he says it was an accident. He tells Bridget that Sally was so strong she made him feel insecure. He says they weren’t happy like he is with Bridget, and that he and Sally fought all the time. Tearfully, he tells Bridget the truth, that Sally only fell to her death after he pushed her. But he manages to spin the story in a way that makes Bridget feel sorry for him. Sally tries to intervene, telling Bridget no, that he is not sorry for what he did, but Bridget is not listening to Sally. She sympathizes with Danny and, embracing him, comforting him, Bridget tells Danny that she knows Sally’s death was an accident.

    It was an accident

Josh and Aiden relax outside Josh’s parents’ house, talking about recent events. Josh feels liberated by having told them the truth but is not sure what comes next. Aiden shares that he tried to tell his wife and son about being a vampire. He thought that he could somehow make it work, that he could find a way to be a vampire but to keep his family together. Josh is tempted with the idea of staying with his family and living something like a normal life. After all, he is only a werewolf once a month. He could manage that, right? But Aiden insists that staying is a bad idea. He says that even if, one day, Josh’s family come to believe him, they will “build you a cage, and it’ll work. Every month you’ll transform in the comfort of your own home and in the morning your parents will be waiting for you with food and water, and they will clean you, like the day that you were born. Because he’s not a monster. He’s our son. And he would never, ever hurt us. So one day someone will leave the cage unlocked because what’s the worst that could happen? And brutally, against your human will, you will kill them all.” But Josh says, “I won’t let it get to that. I know what I’m doing now. I’ll go to the woods.” Aiden: “No matter what you do, they’re going to want to get involved. They’re your family. Which is exactly why they’re defenseless against you.” Josh: “I’ve already hurt them too much not to try.”

Aiden returns to the city and heads over to Sapp & Sons (the mortuary) where a vampire meeting is in progress. Aiden’s only purpose was to tell the other vampires to stay away from his friends but as he turns to leave, Marcus makes some nasty comments about Aiden’s “doggy stink.” His strategy backfires, though, when Bishop steps in. Bishop is all about his vampire “family” taking care of their own, including the weakest (Aiden) and the mistakes (Marcus).

Emily asks Josh to please stay a while, and promises to come home once a month to help out. Inside the house, his parents are smiling, working together in the kitchen, inviting Josh to eat. It is a lovely, happy family scene.

Bridget goes back to the house to talk to Sally. She tells Sally that she is sorry about how she died, but she will never talk to Sally again. Bridget wants Sally to leave her and Danny alone.

    Back at home

When Aiden gets home he finds Sally depressed (again) because she completely failed to protect Bridget or to affect Danny. Josh comes home too.

    Mysterious farmhouse

A black hearse, driving down an isolated, country lane toward a small white farmhouse. Marcus gets out and speaks to a woman wearing what looks like some kind of Pennsylvania Dutch costume. Marcus tells her that he has news from Boston and asks if he can see “them.” She looks very disapproving but says nothing, just leads him to a barn. As she leaves him there, she tells him that it’s “two hours until sundown” and Marcus tells her he will wait. He sits in the chair in the doorway, looking in at the shrouded bodies hanging by their feet from the rafters. Ew! What the heck is going on here?

    At the barn door

    Cocoons

We will have to tune in next Monday to find out, but I would say that Bishop definitely has something sinister up his sleeve.

Being Human: The End of the World As We Knew It

Being Human 2011 Season One Banner

Greetings SciFi/Fantasy Fans!Click to visit Being Human at Syfy

This week’s episode of Being Human was full of drama. All of our characters had their—well, we can’t say lives, exactly—their existences turned upside down with startling revelations. This was a week for turning inward, for self-reflection and decision-making, and once decided, acting with the force of commitment.

While watching this episode I also decided to try the Shazam app I’ve been seeing during the commercial breaks. Even though the ads say it is for iPhone, I was able to download a working copy for my Android phone. I have really enjoyed the song choices so far in all of the Being Human episodes and was not familiar with many of the artists. Syfy.com also provides song lists but is not quite as up to date as the Shazam tag results.

But music aside, this week’s episode definitely raised the stakes a bit and gave us something a little juicier than usual to sink our teeth into. (Okay, no puns were actually intended but there they are, just the same!)

Spoiler Alert: The following is a complete recap/review of Being Human, Episode 105 (The End of the World As We Knew It). If you have not yet seen this episode and prefer to watch it without spoilers, stop reading now and go to Syfy.com where you can watch the full episode online. You can also watch it for free on iTunes.

    * * * * * * * * * *

And now, on with the show!

As usual, the episode begins with a voice-over sequence intended to set the stage for what is to come. The music track during the opening sequence is a song called “Dead Letter & The Infinite Yes” by Wintersleep, which I liked a lot. This week’s voiceover voice is Sally’s (Meaghan Rath):

“Every culture has its own way of saying goodbye.”

    Aiden ministers to Sarin

[Aiden (Sam Witwer) is at work at the hospital, ministering to a man (Alex Ivanovici) who is clearly gravely ill. We see his name on the I.V. bag, “C. Sarin.” Aiden places the morphine button in his hand.)

“Comforts in the rituals that prepare the living for death. They ease the journey into what comes after.”

[Now a priest (Eric Davis) is at the man Sarin’s bedside, administering last rites.]

    “Assuming there is an after.”

[Sarin’s body, wrapped in a sheet, is wheeled out by two orderlies.]

“In the end, death is a journey you take alone.”

[Sarin’s body, unwrapped, lies on metal table in the hospital morgue.]

“For some of us, that journey takes us on a hidden path…”

    [Sarin’s eyes open.]

“…through a darker forest, where instead of answers, we find a whole new set of questions.”

[Someone else is there in the room with Sarin, we can’t see who it is. And then the room is empty.]

    + + + + +

To the tune of “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” we find Sarin being given his vampire orientation by the very priest that administered his last rites. The lesson has to do with the location of the carotid artery (one on each side of the neck) and how one should properly use it as a portal for good eatin’ (“You hit it clean and it’s like tapping straight into a geyser”). Yum! And yes, the priest is also a vampire, and he shares Mr. Sarin’s first vampire meal, some poor freaked-out guy strapped to the table with his mouth taped shut.

    Vampire Orientation

Meanwhile, back at the house, Josh (Sam Huntington) is frantically scrubbing his bloody clothes in the bathroom sink. He really must have done a number on those vampires last night with Ray because there seems to be a lot of blood. Josh looks at his reflection in the mirror, and we get the idea that he is not happy with his behavior.

[The song playing might be T.H. White’sFloating Way Up” but I can’t be sure. I was not able to locate a copy of the song for verification purposes, although I did find a song on T.H. White’s band page that makes me think it might be his.]

    Josh washing bloody clothes

Downstairs, Aiden and Sally are experiencing what appears to be an angry house. There are certainly ominous sounds emanating from somewhere nearby. Aiden says he feels like he is “in a submarine that is about to blow” and tells Sally that she has to stop it. He says that ever since she got back from seeing Danny and Bridget together it has been “Amityville Horror plumbing” and that she has been “poltergeisting “ her own house. Sally protests that she has made her peace with the Danny/Bridget situation but Aiden wonders if that is true: “Then why does it sound like the house is gonna eat us?” Another horrible sound comes from the vicinity of the kitchen and they run in to find nasty, black water backing up into the sink.

    Enter the Unwelcome Werewolf

Enter Ray (Andreas Apergis), the unwelcome werewolf, with his usual crude manner, making jokes about the plumbing. Aiden suggests that it’s time Ray moves on (he has been with them for a month now) but Ray has no intention of going anywhere. As Ray makes veiled comments about late night exercise being good for stimulating the appetite (the exercise being beating up vampires), Josh slips down the stairs and slides a plastic bag into the trash before anyone notices. I’m thinking it’s the bloody clothes he couldn’t get clean in the sink. Josh is obviously not happy with his part of the evening’s activities and is trying to hide it from his friends. But Aiden does notice Josh’s bruised knuckles and wants to know how they got that way. Josh’s response: “Oh, that was just some drunk idiots, being idiots.” True enough.

Ray keeps saying way too much to Aiden and Sally, which makes Josh uncomfortable so he takes off. But Ray follows him outside (in his short bathrobe, carrying what looks like a beer and a chicken leg) to remind Josh that they have plans to meet at the cabin later for a little transformation togetherness. Josh doesn’t say anything either way, probably still undecided about what he is going to do.

    Ray in his bathrobe

Later, at the hospital, Aiden hurries into a treatment room to assist with an emergency patient. Apparently, Sarin (the new vampire that was turned by the priest) attacked this guy and bit him in the neck, but something went wrong. The man’s neck is bleeding badly and Aiden struggles momentarily with his own bloodlust. Sarin is in the next room, being treated for a knife wound. He is raving and out of control, asking for the priest. He keeps saying, “I screwed up,” something about not seeing the knife and then the cops showed up. Aiden tries to get Sarin to tell him more about the priest, but Sarin breaks free and escapes, running through the hospital at superhuman speed. I wonder why no one says anything about that. Maybe he moved so fast that no one could see him? I don’t remember Aiden being able to do that, though. Curious.

Danny (Gianpaolo Venuta) brought a plumber to the house to deal with all the backed-up drains. While Danny talks to the plumber about the proper use of drain cleaner and snake thingies, Bridget (Angela Galuppo) goes to the bottom of the stairs to the spot where Sally died. Danny joins her there and they have a little intimate moment. Sally is at the top of the stairs watching them but soon she has had enough of that and drifts away.

    Bridget looking for Sally

Back at the hospital, the priest stands in a crowded elevator, enjoying the overwhelming sensation of having so many people’s hearts beating so close by. But when the elevator empties, Aiden is there too, at the back of the car. They go to the chapel where the priest tells Aiden he just transferred to the hospital a couple of days ago. He really is an ordained priest (except for the being dead part, which the Church must not be aware of). He tells Aiden that nothing has really changed. He says, I’m still saving souls, just in a different way.” He tells Aiden that six years ago he was 34 and dying of cancer. He said God spoke to him and told him that there is no afterlife and that this is the only life we get. He said a sympathetic doctor offered him “another option.” He tells Aiden, “Don’t you see? God saved me.” He goes on to say that “Jesus himself rose from the dead.” Aiden, in disbelief, says “so you think that Jesus was a vampire?” to which the priest responds, “Gets you thinking, doesn’t it?” Giving up, Aiden tells him, “I don’t care what your perverted theology is, there is no ‘turning’ in this hospital.” But as it happens, Bishop is the one who brought in the priest so Aiden will have to take it up with him.

    Priest in chapel

Josh is at the hospital talking with one of the patients, a middle aged lady. Remember the blonde doctor he tried to pick up with Ray’s less-than-subtle technique (followed by her threat of a sexual harassment complaint)? Well, she sees Josh there and wants to know what he is doing “bothering” her patient and suggests he might just be there to avoid doing his regular work. But Josh is there on his day off, visiting the lady because she told him she didn’t get any visitors. Josh is smiling as he walks away, knowing he won that round, and she looks like she is changing her mind about him.

    Dr. Blonde confronts Josh

Meanwhile, Bridget is once again drawn to the staircase. She calls out softly to Sally. But once again, Danny joins her there and this time he is becoming angry. He tells Bridget that Sally isn’t there, and asks her, “do you even think about how this makes me feel, you constantly bringing her up?” Bridget immediately regrets talking about Sally (guilt trip: successful). Just then, the plumber comes down the stairs and reports that he has snaked all the drains in the house but all he found was some hair in the shower and… Sally’s engagement ring.

    Sally's ring

Suddenly it all comes rushing back to Sally, how she had taken off her ring to wash her hands in the bathroom sink. How the ring fell down the drain. How angry Danny had been with her for taking it off. He started acting crazy, accusing her, asking her when else she took it off. When she went out with the girls? Maybe she left it in some guy’s bed?

As Sally begins to remember, the pipes open up, and all the dirty water flows down the drain.

Sally remembers Danny yelling at her; at the top of the stairs he pushed her, and she fell to her death.

    Sally falls down the stairs

Bridget wonders aloud what Sally’s ring was doing in the pipes. Danny claims that he doesn’t know but he is clearly shaken. Bridget thinks the house might have wanted Danny to have the ring. Danny lies and tells her that Sally was always losing the ring and that she could never keep it on.

Sally believes the house was trying to tell her how she died.

Aiden goes to the vampires’ funeral home hangout to talk to Bishop (Mark Pellegrino). Aiden is angry that Bishop ignored his insistence that there be no “recruiting” at the hospital. He asks Bishop why Sarin was chosen in the first place, since Sarin is not one of the politically powerful people Bishop has favored for turning most recently. It turns out that Sarin had a lot of money but no friends or family to miss him or to interfere. And as for the priest, Bishop says, “Nobody sells eternal life like a priest.” Bishop tells Aiden that he is only turning the “willing” now, “the influential, the useful.” He goes on to remind Aiden how religion and religious leaders have been used throughout history to serve political aims. And what might Bishop’s political agenda be? Bishop wants to come out of the vampire closet. He is building a strategic army, believing that “when we have the numbers and we have the power, we won’t have to hide. We can live right out in the open.” Aiden thinks Bishop is crazy and basically tells him so. Bishop responds to the criticism by beating Aiden up and, while he’s doing that, he tells Aiden that vampires are “evolution, and that it’s nature taking its course.” Bishop also suggests that Aiden is confused about his own state of being, saying, “You’re a vampire, playing a human, shacking up with an animal—and a rabid one at that. Of course, how could he tell you?…Your wolf has a taste for vampires. Muzzle your dog, Aiden, or we will.” Obviously Bishop knows that Josh was pounding on vampires the night before.

    Bishop beats Aiden

It is nearing time for Josh to transform into his werewolf form and, despite some obvious misgivings, Josh goes to meet Ray at the cabin in the woods.

Josh and Ray go into the cabin

Aiden arrives home to find Sally moping and the house shaking like crazy. Sally realizes that it wasn’t the house trying to tell anyone anything, it was Sally trying to tell herself how she died. She tells Aiden that she didn’t just die, that Danny killed her. She said that when she was alive she made excuses for Danny’s behavior, telling herself that Danny was just passionate. But the truth was that he had a temper. She said that even now he doesn’t take responsibility for what happened. Instead, he blames Sally as if it were her fault that he killed her. Aiden gets up and heads for the door, intending to make Danny pay, but Sally stops him.

Sally tells aiden about her death

At the cabin, Ray exhorts Josh to enjoy the transformation, but Josh can never embrace what has happened to him. As they talk, Ray reveals that he has big plans for their future. He and Josh will go in search of more werewolves and form a pack, “running together, living together, like nature intended.”

It is interesting that both Aiden and Josh are confronted with the idea with what they have each become is somehow natural, and both completely reject the idea that nature has anything to do with it. The priest’s argument to Aiden was that God created everything, including vampires, ergo vampires are a natural part of the world. Ray thinks of werewolves as being so like wolves that their natural state is to be wolf-like. But both Aiden and Josh see themselves as monsters, not natural or even supernatural, but altered by an infectious disease.

Josh rejects Ray’s plan for their future and tells him that it is time he moves on. They argue, and Ray blurts out that he has been looking for Josh for two years. That gives Josh a pause. Two years? As many of you have probably guessed, it is now revealed that Ray was the one that turned Josh into a werewolf two years ago. The good news for us is that some of those little nagging questions are cleared up from the pilot episode. Remember the flashback scenes from when Josh became a werewolf? It was not at all clear where he was or who he was with when he was attacked. All we saw was Josh injured, another man dead on the ground next to him, and police officers with flashlights. Now we get more of the details about that night, as Ray tells the story to Josh:

    Ray's revelation

Ray: “I’m the one you met on that camping trip. I’m the one who turned you. I’m the one who gave you this gift….I was roaming the forest in Maine. I attacked two backpackers. One of them died, one was wounded, a scratch on the shoulder. I checked the paper for days after. I found your name.”

Josh is furious. He screams, “You killed my friend!”

Ray: “But you survived. You’re the only one, Josh. I’ve been trying to find you. I’ve been tracking you ever since.”

[Okay, that part bothers me a little. Don’t they have heightened werewolf senses, especially near the full moon? Ray had Josh’s name and a starting point to pick up his scent. Why did it take him two years to find Josh?]

Josh: “Why? Why wouldn’t you just leave me alone?”

Ray: “I couldn’t. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw you, lying there, in the woods. I couldn’t stop thinking. I had to see what was your life like?”

Josh: “ My life? I don’t have a life. My family, my fiancé, my whole future. You should’ve killed me….Why didn’t you?”

Ray: “There were voices, screaming, men coming. You know how it is. It’s just flashes of memory. The wolf is a gift, Josh. I was just like you at first.”

Josh: “This is not a gift! It’s a curse!….All this time you’ve been coaching me to manage my condition, and you’re the one who did this to me. What kind of sick freak are you?”

    Ray: “I’m your friend.”

Josh: “What do you want from me?”

Ray: “I thought if I helped you, if you needed me, you’d let me in….I saw what you have, your house, your friends, your job. I wanted that too. I wanted what I used to have. I had a wife, a son. I lost everything.”

    Then Josh starts to transform.

Aiden goes back to the chapel to speak again with the priest. Aiden has been a vampire for 200 years, the priest was just turned 6 years ago. Aiden tries to explain that when enough time has passed, and there are so many people you have killed that you can no longer remember their faces, that is when it gets scary. But the priest loves being a monster and looks forward to forgetting the faces. He thinks it will be liberating, not scary. Aiden asks him if the church means the same thing to him as it did before he turned. The priest replies that when he is alone in the church, he can feel God there with him. Aiden tries to explain that in the same way the church can be a sanctuary for the priest, Aiden needs the hospital to be his sanctuary, a place where there are no other vampires. But the priest mocks him, saying, “So you pick a place full of bleeding bodies to go straight?” and Aiden responds, “I can help people move on to the death that I will never have.” But the priest tells Aiden that he is lying to himself, and that if he truly wanted to die he could make that happen at any time. In fact, they could do it right now—and he rips off a piece of a wooden pew, prepared to stake Aiden.

    Priest with a stake

Sally is at Danny’s place looking at pictures of Danny and Bridget on a shelf. She moves further into the room, stands still, and by the force of her will, everything begins to shake.

Darkness is descending over the woods. Josh hasn’t completed his transformation, but screams with the pain of it. Ray encourages him as his own transformation begins, advising Josh not to fight it, but to let it take him. [I notice that the werewolves’ teeth are very much like the vampires’ teeth. Is this intentional or just because all the teeth are made by the same people?]

    Teeth1

In the chapel, the priest still holds the stake as he is talking to Aiden. He tells Aiden that he knows Aiden wants to live and that’s okay, that God intended us to live forever. He says, “Adam and Eve were immortal before the fall. It’s our natural state.” [Again with the “natural” references.] The priest quotes from the Bible, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies.” But Aiden finds the priest’s thoughts disturbing and says, “I get it. You’re completely unhinged.” Aiden attacks the priest, takes the stake from him and tosses it aside.

At Danny’s, Sally has really built up steam. [The song in the background is “Broadcast to the Addicted” by Drakes Hotel.] The lights are flickering, things are flying all over the room, everything is shaking. As Sally recalls how Danny shoved her down those stairs, the wind rises in the apartment, glass breaks, doors open and close.

At the cabin, Josh and Ray are completing their transformations. Josh attacks Ray.

Aiden is holding the priest down on the floor. He pulls some kind of little hammer out of his jacket pocket (what was that doing there?) and saying “no more,” he starts hitting the priest in the mouth.

    Aiden has a hammer

Daylight in the woods. Ray is naked and smeared with dirt, lying on the ground. Josh tosses him his bag of clothes. He tells Ray: “The first time we met, I don’t blame you. You had no control. You didn’t know what you were doing. But the second, you should’ve just stayed away.”

Ray: “All I wanted was to find the last person I had a connection with.”

Josh: “The connection of a murderer to the man he’s killed?”

Ray: “You don’t know what it’s like. I’ve been so lonely for years.

Josh: “You expect me to feel sorry for you?”

Ray: “You think you’re better than me? You think you won’t do what I’ve done?”

Josh: “I’m not like you, Ray.”

Ray: “The wolf is you, and you are the wolf. The only difference between you and me is that I know what I am. I accept it.”

    Josh: “And I never will.”

Ray: “Give it a few years, or five, or ten. This is it, Josh. It’s a life sentence, brother.“ And as Josh walks away, “One day you’ll know what it’s like. You’ll come looking for me.”

Josh walks away, with Ray screaming his name over and over. [The song playing is “Shine” by Hanna Georgas.]

At the mortuary/vampire headquarters, the priest holds a handkerchief to his mouth, begging Bishop to “fix” him. Apparently, Aiden has knocked out the priest’s fangs. Bishop is gentle and reassuring, but there is no fixing the teeth. Bishop calls it a flaw in their evolution that the fangs don’t grow back. The priest panics, asking what they’re going to do, how he will be able to eat. Bishop reassures him, saying they are a family and they will take care of him. The priest continues to ask: How will I survive? As one of Bishop’s underlings ushers the priest out. [This part doesn’t make any sense to me either. So what if he doesn’t have any fangs? Couldn’t he just use a sharp object to start the bleeding, then feed from the open wound? Less convenient, maybe, but serviceable. I don’t get it.]

    Bishop comforts S

Danny and Bridget return to Danny’s apartment where everything inside is completely destroyed. Suddenly he sees Sally’s engagement ring, strategically placed in the middle of the floor, at the tip of a swirl of debris. Bridget wonders how the ring got there, but Danny seems to have an idea. He tells Bridget he’s going to check the bedroom.

    Danny's place is trashed

    Ring on the floor

Josh is back at work at the hospital, pushing an empty wheelchair down a corridor. The blonde doctor sees him through a window. She is on the phone, but pantomimes shooting herself in the head, smiling, sharing a little moment with Josh. He smiles to himself as he continues down the hall.

Sally and Aiden are back at home, sitting quietly with their own thoughts on the front steps when Josh calls them in to dinner. They obediently go in, even though Josh is the only one who actually eats. Josh tells them to fake it or something but insists that they are all going to sit down to a hot, delicious meal together. He says, “We have to hang onto some rituals of normalcy.” Over dinner, Josh tells Sally that he heard from Aiden what happened to her. They are all silent for a minute, then Josh tries to make small talk with Aiden about work, but that didn’t go too well. Sally asks what happened with Ray, and Josh tells them that Ray is gone. Aiden asks about the “degenerates” they rolled and Josh assures him that that’s gone too. Finally, Josh tells them, “Oh. Fun tidbit: Turns out that Ray is the one that did this to me.” He reassures them that he’s okay, though. He says, “Who wouldn’t want to meet their were-dad?”

    THE END

And that’s the end of a very interesting and thought-provoking episode of Being Human. Hope you enjoyed the play-by-play.

Hello science fiction, vampire, ghost and werewolf fans!Click to visit Being Human at Syfy

Over the past two weeks Syfy laid the foundations with parts one and two “There Goes the Neighborhood,” the pilot episodes for Syfy’s new series, Being Human. This week the tale of three apparently immortal creatures continues with “Some Thing to Watch Over Me”.

The following is an analysis of various aspects of Being Human, episode three “Some Thing to Watch Over Me” rather than a recap. However, spoilers will be discussed as we delve into the single effect of this episode dovetailing the two part pilot. Before beginning, we would like to compliment the creators including original music by F.M. Lesieur for his haunting score, series editing by Simon Webb and the entire creative production team of Adam Kane, Anna Fricke, Cari Davine, Chris Dingess, Jeremy Carver and Nancy Won (to name but a few) for their delightful adaptation of the original United Kingdom Being Human series as seen on the BBC television network.

We would suggest that you may desire to click the next links read the analysis of the pilot part one and part two review by our Being Human series Team Leader and editor OffWorldTravelr (Ginger).

This week the opening sequence narration using a voice-over track is replaced with vignette sequences of what has occurred in the two part pilot as the series main characters discussed their transformations into a ghost (Sally – Meaghan Rath), vampire (AidanSam Witwer), and werewolf (JoshSam Huntington). We we last observed our trio of erstwhile heroes as they were contemplating their fate on the front steps of their apartment building.

    Being Human S1x03 - Previously
The series fourth main starring character is police insider Bishop portrayed by Mark Pellegrino whose intent is to subvert Aidan’s and his friends attempts to become more human and integrate into our society. As I analyze the Bishop character I do not simply see the leader of a ruthless gang of vampires. The character thrust is more akin to the corruption we have often observed in our society when power hungry individuals seek the protection offered by being part of the establishment. Pellegrino does a rather nice job exuding this corruption to the viewing audience.

The episode begins with Aidan walking down the street thinking of the consequences of living forever. He has flashbacks from an earlier era of himself seeing a reflection in the window and contemplates the often mind boggling aspect of being a vampire and living forever.

We segue to Josh (Sam Huntington) laying on his bed also thinking about the vastness of time as a virtual immortal and how they are going to possible live like “human beings”. “Some Thing to Watch Over Me” is the foundation of this quest of memories that span beyond a human lifetime now that life in the “Neighborhood”has been established.

We them move to a sequence of Sally (Meaghan Rath) at the the house as she fondly strokes a wood carved heart representing her beloved Danny (Gianpaulo Venuta). Sally  Sally reaches out to touch the carved heart, obviously emotionally shaken that she has been taken from the man whom she loves. Sally is obviously wondering how she will ever move on in her existence after life as a mortal.

Next we observe Aidan (Sam Witwer) continuing to flashback as the narration states “it is impossible to live forever perfectly”. Several nightmarish flashbacks haunt Aidan as he thinks about his fate.

The next memorable sequence is the gathering of the neighborhood at the trio’s apartment establishing a “neighborhood watch” program. The irony of a watch for the criminals responsible for unsolved activities is savored by this reviewer. Josh arrives home from grocery shopping and is completely shocked by this development. Aidan takes the bags of groceries and moves to the kitchen while trying to calm him down explaining it is perfect cover for their “lives”. Josh asks if he is insane?!

Throughout “Some Thing to Watch Over Me” we observe the principle characters struggling with their fate trying to become more “human like” in their attempts to blend into our modern day society society. It is this factor which becomes the basic single effect of the series mixed with lighter moments to offset the darker realities of their lives such as Sally’s mourning for her loss of her ability to be with her beloved Danny.

Being Human S1x03 - Officer Garrity at the hood watch meeting
One of these lighter moments is a guess who is coming to dinner type sequence as Josh and Aidan realize that Sally needs companionship to overcome the loss she feels for Danny whom she waits to see at the neighborhood watch. Low and behold a bit later we are introduced to a second comic relief character Tony the Axel Rose rocker whom Aidan and Josh introduce to Sally as her “ghostly” companion.

Naturally in “Some Thing to Watch Over Me”, while seeking to trying to be human Bishop confronts Aidan once again. This struggle is certain to continue as Bishop attempts to sway Aidan to return to his vampire root with the clan. This is certain to be a central singe effect focus of the plot line gluing together each episode in the series. I for one do not like Bishop for what he represents, by which I mean that the characterization of evil hiding in the establishment is perfectly executed.

Being Human S1x03 - Aidan is pressured by Bishop
Of the main series characters Sally is my favorite for her quirky and humorous moments. Perhaps it is because she has a great talent to generate a wide variety of facial expressions in her interactions with Josh and Aidan. Her lighthearted happy go lucky moments (notwithstanding her loss of Danny) are a joy to behold. One of the question I have is how will Sally become interwoven in the trio’s quest to Being Human? Having never seen the original BBC version, this series is a treat for me to watch the adventures unfold!
