Greetings to all the fans of Mayans MC!

We are all feeling a bit lost without this fantastic series. That brought us into the world of a motorcycle club in the fictional town of Santo Padre, California.

Mayans MC showed us the importance of brotherhood and family in a world of bikes, money, drugs, clubs, loyalty, guns, and more. This type of motorcycle club criminal world was initially introduced to us in Sons of Anarchy, created by Kurt Sutter.

Within this world, we witnessed a Shakespearean tale with Greek tragedy undertones unfold before our eyes. Elgin James skillfully guided the series on a lengthy journey, introducing us to a diverse cast of characters, some of whom we adore and others we despise.

Warning: This detailed analysis of the marvelous  Mayans MC series will have many spoilers revealed, so if you have yet to see the series or have not caught up with all the episodes across the five superb seasons, then stop now!

At the start of the series on September 04, 2018, Ezekiel ‘Ez’ Reyes (JD Pardo) entered a world vastly different from what he had planned for his future.

Known as “The Golden Boy,” Ez had expected to finish college at Stanford, marry his high school sweetheart, Emily Thomas (Sarah Bolger), pursue a successful career as a lawyer or doctor, start a family, and lead a prosperous life.

However, fate had other ideas for him, Emily and the other members of the Reyes family.

Another significant theme in the show is the relationship between fate and the consequences of the characters’ decisions. Each of which would have far-reaching effects on everyone and everything, especially the Mayans high school sweethearts Ez and Emily.

Slow to Bleed Fair Son and Series Analysis:

Mayans MC - Edward James Olmos as Filipe Reyes

The events in the series and Ez’s current situation resulted from his father’s sins.

Felipe Reyes’s (Edward James Olmos) troubled past drove Ez to make a life-altering decision affecting those around him.

With a veteran like Olmos part of the series, we knew we would be getting top-notch acting in every scene that Edward James Olmos was in.

The series featured a talented cast of Latino actors, including Edward James Olmos, Danny Pino, Michael Irby, Selene Luna, Carla Baratta, Emilio Rivera, Vincent Vargas who we interviewed at San Diego Comic-Con 2022 before season five and Tony Plana. One actor who stood out to me was Richard Cabral, who played Johnny Coco Cruz. I have expressed my admiration for his performance multiple times. Cabral and co-star JD Pardo delivered some of the best acting I have seen on TV, bringing depth and complexity to their characters.

We saw their flaws, weaknesses, intelligence, and brutality, which gave us insight into what drove them.

From the first season, after Emily visited him in prison, we learned why Ez had been released from prison after serving only eight years.

Few people ever knew about these details. Unfortunately, this would ultimately become Ez’s undoing.

Ez brought a different energy to the club, using his intelligence as an asset instead of relying solely on physical strength like his brother Angel (Clayton Cardenas).

Brotherhood was a central theme, as being part of the club always meant having someone to back you up. But it also meant sacrificing individuality for the good of the club.

The characters’ backstories were interwoven, and we saw how they evolved from season to season. Ez’s arc was particularly impressive, with shades of Shakespearean tragedy.

The writers incorporated references to Julius Caesar, Richard III, Hamlet, and Greek mythology, adding depth for viewers who caught the parallels. Overall, the series was a masterful example of great storytelling and acting.

Mayans MC S1 Danny Pino as Miguel Galindo

In the TV series, Miguel Galindo (Danny Pino) is a cartel boss and Emily Thomas’ husband. Pino brings a sense of swagger and intelligence to the character, which he has previously portrayed in Kurt Sutter’s The Shield. As the son of the feared and respected head of the Galindo Cartel, Miguel has always had to prove himself and not live in his father’s shadow. Pino does an excellent job portraying Miguel’s duality, from his ruthless business persona to his loving role as a husband and father. Miguel’s interactions with Ez are fascinating, as Emily is often the subject of their conversations. Miguel fully understands Emily’s lingering feelings for Ez, which adds tension to their relationship and leads to its downfall.

Mayans MC S3x10 Carla Baratta as Luisa Adelita Espina

The female characters in the series have consistently been portrayed with excellent writing and acting. Kurt Sutter has a talent for highlighting the flaws and strengths of his female characters, highlighting their power, intelligence, brutality, beauty, and ugliness. This complexity adds depth to each female character, making them all the more celebrated. The women in Mayans have unique qualities, each displaying brilliance from the beginning. For instance, Carla Baratta’s portrayal of Luisa ‘Adelita’ Espina was exceptional. She started as the fierce leader of Los Olvidados, which means ‘the forgotten ones,’ and became a nuisance to the Galindo cartel. Carla’s portrayal of Adelita’s anger and suffering, disguised as brutality, was remarkable. Her ability to fully immerse herself in the character, almost becoming animalistic, was a challenging feat for any actor, which she accomplished with conviction.

Mayans MC Ray McKinnon as Lincoln 'Linc' Potter

Adelita’s journey was tumultuous and difficult. Her brokenness fueled her desire for revenge against those who hurt her. The only thing that gave her stability was her son Maverick.

Despite being told by Lincoln ‘Linc’ Potter (Ray McKinnon), that her son had died, Adelita refused to believe it. Her lengths to recover her son were astounding, a testament to a mother’s love.

Mayans MC S4x08 Adelita and Angel with their baby son

After reuniting with Maverick, Adelita left her life behind and started a family with Angel. Sadly, fate had other plans in store for her. Adelita’s collaboration with Soledad (Selene Luna) revealed that her past resulted from her current struggles.

She resorted to this path to secure financial support for her son. However, she concealed this truth from Angel, who later found out but never confronted her.

Mayans MC S5x05 Patricia Devlin visits Emily at her home

Lincoln, a bad, corrupt cop to the core who caused much suffering for the members of the Mayans, ultimately triumphs over Patricia Devlin (Dana Delany).

Delany, an accomplished actress who joined the series for five exciting episodes, engaged in a battle she almost won that would have witnessed Potter behind bars for his crimes. Tragically Devlin was destined to lose to Potter who had outsmarted the lady with Department of Justice connections all the way from Washington DC.

Mayans MC S5x01 Adelita with grandpa Filipe

I was disappointed by how Adelita’s character died in the series. Given her impressive fighting skills, I expected her to go out again in a blaze of glory while fighting for her freedom. Instead, her death felt unceremonious. I found it disappointing how the character’s actions went against what they had previously stood for. While Mini killing her may have been intentional, it left me unsatisfied. I had hoped for a confrontation between the two characters regarding the task Soledad had given her rather than Mini resorting to killing. This was one of the few issues I had with the series. The writers took the easy way out by killing off certain characters instead of giving them a death that was true to their character.

Mayans MC S3 Coco and Hope

I had a favorite character in the show: Hope (Vanessa Giselle). I enjoyed interviewing Vanessa about her acting process and audition for Mayans. She was so fun and incredibly talented. Her character name suited her well because she was a source of light in Coco’s life. Despite the circumstances of their meeting, Hope remained authentic to herself. She survived and flourished despite Isaac’s (JR Bourne) threats towards her and Coco. Unfortunately, Coco eventually passed away, and when he did, it changed Hope and Letty (Emily Tosta).

Mayans MC S5x03 Letty and Hope held at gunpoint

Hope and Letty found solace in each other, leaning on each other for comfort and helping each other work through the immense sorry that comes with losing a loved one.

When Isaac found Hope and Letty again, he held them prisoner and forced them to commit acts of violence and spy on the Broken Saints, who were in consort with the Mayans. Once Letty and Hope escaped and went on the run, Hope made the heartbreaking decision not to continue.

She made Letty stop the car on a busy highway, told her she loved her, thanked her for being her best friend, and then stepped back into oncoming traffic. Hope died on her terms, in her way.

Yes, it was brutal, but she knew that if they continued running, Isaac would find them no matter where they went. Hope found peace on her terms, which is why her death made sense to me because she did it her way.

Mayans MC S5x06 Soledad tells Adelita she must do one more assasination to be free

Another strong female character was Soledad (Selene Luna), leader of the LNG cartel. Soledad had the business savvy and brutality customarily associated with men, but she proved she could be just as ruthless and dominant. Selene brought a gravitas to her performance; she could go head-to-head with the men in her scenes and outshine them. She was cunning and skillful in her portrayal of Soledad. I had the pleasure of interviewing Selene; she was lovely and wonderful. Soledad showed that even if you are family, it does not mean you are immune to her brutal ways, as she had Adelita kill off her brother El Banquero (Guillermo Garcia).

The supporting characters in the Mayans played a crucial role in the story. Their individual stories added depth to the series and made them more relatable. Gilly Lopez (Vincent Vargas), Bishop (Michael Irby), Creeper (Joseph Raymond Lucero), Hank (Frankie Loyal), Letty (Emily Tosta), and Taza (Raoul Max Trujillo) all had their unique tales that were interwoven into the plot.

Watching the prospects of the club was also intriguing, especially the newest prospects, Nestor (Gino Vento) and Bottles (Alex Barone) whom we interviewed during season five. Ez, who started as a prospect, quickly rose to become the President, but not without causing tension within the group. The prospect position is similar to underlings in mob families, where they must prove their worth before becoming full members. Ez stood out from the others with his intelligence and cunning. Overall, integrating these characters added a human element to the story and made the series more enjoyable.

Mayans MC S3x10 Ez and Gaby before Ez kills her

The Reyes brothers had a strong bond; Angel was always very protective of his little brother, and Ez loved him very much. As the series progressed, we saw the shift happen in their dynamic. I found it intriguing to witness how they switched roles, where Ez transformed into the ruthless and savage one, executing Gabby (Sulem Calderon) as she threatened Angel.

Although some individuals were stunned by this scene, it did not surprise me. Knowing the mafia and their lifestyle, I understand that family holds the utmost importance, surpassing all aspects of life.

Frankly, I never understood the relationship between Ez and Gabby; it never made sense to me.

Mayans MC S3x10 Emilio Rivera as Marcus Alvarez

Even after Ez took charge of the club and appointed Bishop as his VP, he continued to seek guidance from Alvarez (Emilio Rivera). Ez believed that the previous version of the club, which included Alvarez and Bishop, had become outdated. However, the issue is that the traditional methods were effective, albeit less fast or efficient than Ez desired. One of the minor characters (I forgot which one) had said, “The Mayans were a great club…under Alvarez,” harkening back to the old-school ways. It is why Marcus wanted to wait until all details were given regarding Coco’s death before jumping headfirst into war. Marcus and Bishop have seen what a war can do to the club; they have seen the bloodshed and their brother’s fall. They both know what it takes to be leaders, yet Ez—usurped both.

Mayans MC S5x09 Kody tells Lincoln Potter she wants Ez to die

One character, Lincoln Potter, was universally despised for the evil he did to the Mayans, yet loved simultaneously due to his slimy and corrupt nature with an ability to manipulate people seemingly at will.

Despite his morally bankrupt behavior, his presence on screen was always enjoyed. This is a true testament to the exceptional acting skills of Ray McKinnon, as he successfully portrayed a character that was so easy to hate . In addition to Lincoln Potter, there were a few other characters that I enjoyed seeing on screen. One of them was Isaac (JR Bourne). His portrayal of Isaac was sinister and jarring, as he made it his mission to make Hope’s life with Coco miserable. The addition of the characters from SOA had brought the series back full circle to what it had always intended to be.

Mayans MC S5x05 Isaac has no intention of cooperating

I was not pleased with the way the writers portrayed Isaac’s demise. It felt underwhelming and needed more proper acknowledgment of his character.

Overall, it left me feeling disappointed. Given the harm he inflicted on other characters, it seemed fitting that his actions would catch up with him and that Ez would ultimately defeat him just as he had done to others. However, the actual fight scene was dull and anticlimactic, which made the build-up to the event feel misleading.

Another scene viewers did not like was the killing of Sofia (Andrea Cortés) because she knew too much about the Mayans. Fortunately, Sally the dog survived and was saved by Letty who fled to the Broken Saints ranch after corrupt Potter and Kody (Stella Maeve – pictured above left) gloated over setting up the massacre of the Mayans.

The last episode engaged me at the end, which I knew was coming. The characters were going through the motions, with Ez in particular having disappeared entirely. He was like a ghost of himself, a myth of someone who had already done what he needed and had nothing left to give. I hoped the writers would have given him a more dignified death.

Despite this, I understood what they were trying to do and appreciated the inclusion of historical figures like Julius Caesar and Richard III. I particularly loved Bishop’s reference to Shakespeare, which showed that Ez wasn’t the only one who appreciated his work.

Mayans MC S5x10 Angel and Ez before Ez is killed by the Mayans

The scene between Angel and Ez was heartbreaking, as their love for each other and bond as brothers was palpable. Yet it made sense for Ez to die at the hands of his brother, as twisted as that may sound because it was the ultimate proof of love. You kill that which you love the most, metaphorically. Overall, the series was excellent and ran for an incredible five years. It introduced me to a new set of characters and actors I am now a lifelong fan of. It also gave Latino actors more prominence than any other series in the last decade and offered a glimpse into the world of a motorcycle gang in Santo Padre, California. I’ve enjoyed watching the series from the beginning, and while it wasn’t as popular as Sons of Anarchy, it was fine with me. It stood on its own as a unique entity, introducing us to characters we grew to love, love to hate, and will genuinely miss. It delved into profound family, fate, choices, and karma themes. I also appreciated that the writers incorporated aspects of Mayan culture, introducing us to new gods and inspiring us to learn more about them.

Mayans MC S5x10 Angel and Maverick on the beach

At first, I had planned to write a review of each season of the series, but I soon realized that would take too much time and not showcase what I truly loved about it. Some seasons were better than others, after all. Instead, I focused on what I enjoyed and disliked about the series, the characters I adored, and the actors who brought them to life. Please watch the series and come to your own conclusions, whether you agree or disagree with me. That makes this show outstanding – it sparks conversations and thoughts and makes you question everything. I am thrilled that the series ended with Angel and Maverick on the beach, starting a new life they could not have had before. I am grateful to Kurt Sutter, Elgin James, JD Pardo, Michael Irby, Danny Pino, Sarah Bolger, Vanessa Giselle, Selene Luna, Alex Barone, and everyone who contributed to this incredible show. While it’s bittersweet to see it end, I know that the legacy of the Sons of Anarchy and Mayans will live on.

    Welcome back Mayans MC lovers,

    Mayans MC season five poster

With the ninth episode of the fifth season on Mayans MC, the series introduced out a surprise character appearance and we suffered the loss of another revered character.

The surprise character who meets Ez (JD Pardo) is Wendy Case (Drea de Matteo) from the Sons of Anarchy. SOA admirers will recall de Matteo portrayed Jax Teller’s (Charlie Hunnam) ex-wife. Wendy made her debut in the SOA premiere in the first season that aired on September 03, 2008 and played a recurring role through the fifth season.

Is the meeting between Ez and Wendy coincidence or fate? Did Wendy seek out Ez after hearing about the heinous activities of Isaac (JR Bourne) one of the greatest villains during the five year run of Mayans. Subsequent to “Her Blacks Crackle and Drag” when Isaac mentally tortured Hope (Vanessa Giselle) to the point where she took her own life to save Letty (Emily Tosta) from being further harassed by evil Isaac.

Mayans MC S5x09 Filipe gives Angel advice

In perhaps the most poignant loss of the entire series we witness what appears to be the death of Filipe Reyes (Edward James Olmos), one of the most respected characters in the series who has given loving advice too everyone. In a scene of real terror, Filipe sacrificed himself to protect Angel (Clayton Cardenas) and son Maverick (Maverick James) from Isaac who was seeking to exact more revenge on the Mayans by murdering Angel. Maverick is saved, but Isaac and a henchman escape when Filipe uses his gun to hold them off. Will Isaac be stopped? We shall see!

I Must Go in Now for the Fog Is Rising:

Mayans MC S5x09 Bottles and Guero head back from the Broken Saints ranch arson

The episode, written by Jenny Lynn and delightfully directed by Elgin James, opens with where we left off in “Her Blacks Crackle and Drag” with Bottles (Alex Barone) and Guero (Andrew Jacobs) who were visiting friends at Broken Saints ranch where the Mayans Fentanyl cooking laboratory at the Broken Saints ranch is located.  The look on their faces having witnessed the burning facility after they are heading back to the Mayans HQ says it all; defeat after months of hard work. Upon return to the Mayans compound Bottles and Guero immediately notify Ez who is with Sofia (Andrea Cortés) and Sally the dog. Knocking on Ez’s door very early in the morning, surprised, Ez says “What the fuck!?”

Mayans MC S5x09 Angel and Meverick settle in at Filipes house

Subsequent to this shocking opening sequence, we are with Angel and young Maverick who have decided to move in this Filipe who told them “this has always been your home”, and “you were raised here”. Filipe has cleaned out a room for Angel and Maverick. Viewers can see that Angel obviously needs the emotional support of his father after his wife Luisa Adelita (Carla Baratta) was murdered. Filipe warns his son that he cannot allow Maverick to grow up like us “don’t let him be like us”.

Mayans MC S5x09 Emily gets ready

One our favorite characters, Emily Thomas (Sarah Bolger) is talking with Luis (Michael Anthony Perez) at home with Miguel (Danny Pino). It is during this time that Emily thanks Luis for helping her when Luis says “Any time Mr. Galindo has ever had a problem, I’m always the one that makes it go away”. This unintentional confession leads viewers to conclude that Luis must have been there when Emily’s sister was killed during their attempted escape in season three. Meanwhile, while a new video security system is being set up, Emily has the installer adjust the camera to point in a direction that would allow her blind spots in coverage of the house interior. This appears to be for Emily’s planned future escape from Miguel with her son Cristóbal.

Mayans MC S5x09 Johnny Panic confronts Ez

Ez heads out to the Broken Saint ranch to meet Johnny Panic (Caitlin Stasey) to assess the damage from the fire caused by Letty who in a vain effort to save Hope, told Isaac about the drug fabrication facility.

Although Johnny Panic is civil enough, Ez does not receive a warm welcome from the rest of the Broken Saints members, one of whom fires a warning shot at Ez.

Mayans MC S5x09 Chip tells Ez that next time she will pull the trigger

Johnny Panic tells Ez that two of their members were killed by the SOA who set fire to the place when their members were inside. Ez says they have to get the “pipeline back up and running” when Chip (Lauren McKnight), one of the Broken Saints punches Ez in the face pointing a pistol at him.

Johnny stops Chip telling the members that it is her fault for allowing the Mayans to set up the drug laboratory shop at their ranch, stating “I’ll take whatever punishment you see fit”. Chip says to Ez if she ever sees him again, “I’m pulling the trigger” while punching Johnny Panic for bringing this tragedy to the ranch.

Mayans MC S5x09 Miguel meets with Patricia

Two things happen. First, Miguel gets a phone call from the Department of Justice’s Patricia Devlin (Dana Delany) to meet her about their deal to protect Miguel’s family is he will provide precise information about corrupt Lincoln Potter (Ray McKinnon). Viewers know that it is Potter who has been abusing his position in law enforcement ever since Mayans started five years ago and likely for a longer time than that. Potter, has been behind much of the trouble in Santo Padre and for the Mayans. Miguel meets with Patricia to complete their arrangements. He demands full immunity in writing for himself and Emily for providing evidence about Potter. Miguel provides Patricia with a sample of what he is going to turn over that raises her eyebrows in agreement. Patricia later calls Miguel to inform his that they have a deal that will protect him, his wife and Cristóbal, their son.

Mayans MC S5x09 Isaac is crying before taking action

In an interesting scene, we observe Isaac alone crying over the loss of his brother, SOA members and perhaps even Hope. Terry (Greg Vrotsos) and other members are discussing how it was that the Mayans were able to attack their headquarters without Terry even getting off a single shot? Isaac comes out to set their course of action against the Mayans “I want them to know the pain of losing a brother” that will instead lead to the loss of Filipe Reyes. The look of hatred on Isaac’s face is palpable.

Mayans MC S5x09 Ez rides to think about the war

Next we are with Ez who is out riding on a lonesome stretch of some highway in what appears to be the central valley of California. His face looks pained and he appears to be distracted thinking about all the setbacks he has experienced and that have occurred recently to the Mayans. Not paying attention, a coyote with an animal it has hunted jumps in front of Ez causing him to lose control of his motorcycle and gets a bit banged up when he and the bike hits the pavement.

Mayans MC S5x09 Wendy Case shows up to help Ez

It is here that Wendy Case appears, helps Ez, but does not reveal that her ex-husband was a member of the SOA “I’d rather not say” says Wendy who also tells Ez “If it’s not the bike, it’s the life”. Ez realizes Wendy knows some things about the rough existence of motorcycle clubs. Wendy offers to give Ez a ride wince there is apparently no cell phone service.

During the ride to town, Ez and Wendy share, without revealing their identities, that the life they have lived and the places they have been have been very difficult. “I can see the world, I just can’t touch it” says Ez referring to his love for Sofia that he has been blocking out. Then Ez says “I must have a concussion, or something, I don’t know why I told you that”.

Mayans MC S5x09 Ez apologies and opens up to Sofia

Wendy gives it to Ez straight: “It’s trauma” (not from the accident), but from the life they have lived. Wendy admits that she was an addict, but proudly says “I’ve been clean almost a decade”. Wendy also shares that her stress is from cleaning up her ex-husbands messes “nine years later”.

Wendy bids Ez farewell telling him to “She her (Sofia) and let her see you”.  Ez goes home and opens up to Sofia bringing communication and love back to their relationship.

Mayans MC S5x09 Patricia tells Potter he is fucked

Next we are in Oceanside California where Patricia Devlin has tracked down Potter’s wife and son. Potter’s wife was a witness in a triple murder case in Mexico, but disappeared, no doubt with Potter’s help.

Potter shows up and is ticked off at Patricia for making it “personal” with a hostile threatening grimace. Based on the evidence provided by Miguel Galindo, Patricia tells Potter that she is “there to put you in prison for the rest of your life” because “I got you motherfucker”.

Mayans MC S5x09 Kody tells Lincoln Potter she wants Ez to die

Potter is not happy with this development, staring at Patricia with hatred as she leaves. We find him with Kody (Stella Maeve) in a park at night. Kody is unaware that Potter is about to be arrested by Patricia Devlin. However, he knows that Kody has lost her job with the government at the Department of Defense. Potter tells Kody that she can get her job back if she cooperates with him. It becomes obvious that Potter is going to use Kody to deflect the blame for much of his own transgressions. Kody agrees “on one condition; I want Ez Reyes to die”.

Mayans MC S5x09 Filipe saves Maverick

As the episode winds down, we find Isaac and his gang of SOA malcontents breaking into Angel’s house. Their intent is clear, to kill Angel to teach Ez a lesson and bring him pain for messing with the SOA. Angel is not there, but Isaac is smart enough to realize that Angel might be at Filipe’s house. They kick in the doors at Filipe’s house with Isaac yelling for Angel who is not there.

Filipe gets his gun and shotgun, grabs Maverick to protect him, and locks himself in a room blocking the door. In an exchange of gunfire, Filipe is hit, but so is one of Isaac’s men who tell him they have to leave when they hear Maverick crying realizing that Angel is not there.

Mayans MC S5x09 Angel and Maverick are safe

The second to last Mayans episode ends with some bittersweet news for series admirers.

First, that Angel and Maverick are reunited by the police outside Filipe’s house. The good news is that Angel and Maverick are safe.

The sad news is that Filipe is observed under a black tarp being carried on a stretcher out of the house just before the preview for the final Mayans episode “Slow to Bleed Fair Son” is aired.

Hello my fellow Mayans MC fans,

    Mayans MC season five poster

The stakes are increasing, with only two episodes left. This episode titled “Her Blacks Crackle and Drag” was written by Sean Varela and Vincent Vargas. Just as the previous episodes have focused on family and those dynamics, this episode and I assume the next two will focus on the impending war. Brett Dos Santos was again in the director’s chair for this episode, as he was for Episode two, “Lord Help My Poor Soul.”

I am happy to see Vincent Vargas get writing credit for this episode. In 2022 at Comic-con, I had the pleasure of interviewing him one-on-one, and he mentioned that he definitely sees himself writing more. I don’t know if he had written this episode at the time. I love that Elgin James lets the cast write and direct episodes. I like that he allows them to get that experience under their belts.

The recap showed scenes from an earlier episode of Guero’s (Andrew Jacobs) rash decision to execute Diaz (Alex Fernandez) and Jinx (Giovanni Rodriguez) as payback for killing his father, Ibarra. Creeper (Joseph Raymond Lucero) gets shanked in prison just as he’s about to tell Hank (Frankie Loyal) who the rat is. Letty (Emily Tosta) has been spying on the Broken Saints for Isaac (JR Bourne) about what is happening at the ranch.

Mayans MC S5x08 Downer heads to the Grim Bastards

At the episode’s opening, we see Downer (Angel Oquendo) and Guero driving to the headquarters of the Grim Bastards. At first, I hadn’t noticed that they were wearing Sons of Anarchy kuttes, but it makes sense since it gives the illusion that SOA were the ones to kill the Mayans, not their own. The banter between them is hilarious, and the rock, paper, scissors game they played was a favorite, considering Downer added his spin to it.

Mayans MC S5x08 Letty is caught trying to escape the Broken Saints ranch

Letty trying to sneak out of the Broken Saints ranch compound was a bit sketchy, but she did get caught by one of the Broken Saints member women.

Luckily Letty able to verbally finesse her way into stealing a truck to meet Isaac. I am surprised that Letty has not been caught in a lie yet by the women. I feel that may happen soon, and the consequences may not work out in her favor.

Mayans MC S5x08 Filipe says to Miguel that we must forgive

I loved the scenes between Felipe (Edward James Olmos) and Miguel (Danny Pino). Both scenes were well-written, as well as acted. Miguel’s arrogance and disdain for Felipe was felt, and Danny conveyed that well. I find it interesting that Miguel talked about his father and what he was like with him not knowing what his father was really like to those that knew him before Miguel was born. Miguel still has no clue how bad his mother was and how the whole trajectory of the Reyes family changed because of her. No one would be in this situation if it weren’t for Dita (Ada Maris). Felipe tells Miguel, as he has told both Angel (Clayton Cardenas) and Ez (JD Pardo), “The only thing a father can ask of his son is to forgive his mistakes.” That statement has been repeated a few other times during the series. With the shift between Ez and Felipe, he has asked him to forgive him a few times. It is because of Felipe’s past mistakes that the whole situation has been put in motion. It makes you think about how one decision can change so many lives.

Mayans MC S5x08 Isaac threatens Letty

Now that the Grim Bastards are with the Mayans, the war with SOA will undoubtedly be bloody. Unfortunately, the circumstances that the Grim Bastards are coming into this war are misleading. It was all under pretenses, but you have to shed some blood during a fight.

I loved the scene between Isaac and Letty. He mentioned that the “fairer sex always pay the price of war” and that they are left behind and must go on alone. The Greek tragedy level has been gaining momentum, with war and family as the two main themes throughout this season. I suspect that by the end of the series, we will have a full-on Greek and Shakespearean tragedy on our hands.

    Phan-Thi-Kim-Phuc

Isaac alluded to the Holocaust and the Vietnam War by mentioning two vivid pictures that have been seen time and time again about the horrors of war. He said one of a girl smiling at a German soldier and getting her head shaved and brought out to the street. The other was the picture of 9-year-old Kim Phuc running from the napalm bomb that struck her village in June 1972. As a photographer, that picture of Kim, known as the Napalm Girl, devastates me every time I see it. The terror and fear on her face forever burned into my brain.

Mayans MC S5x08 Hope is alive

JR did a spectacular job of letting us glimpse sorrow, if only for a second, of how that affected him. That has Vincent written all over it since he was in the Army and a Ranger. I know he has felt the monumental effects of war and the PTSD that comes with it.

Letty telling Isaac that “someday, someone will” shoot you or finish the job her father did makes me think there will be some foreshadowing there. Isaac also manipulates Hope (Vanessa Giselle) into thinking that Letty has abandoned her. It shows how sinister he can be.

Mayans MC S5x08 Ez plans for success

With the chess pieces falling into place with both the Grim Bastards and Iron War on the side of the Mayans, Ez’s plan is coming to fruition.

He knew that once he had the Grim Bastards on his side that the SOA stood no chance. I don’t think the writers plan on having too many people standing at the end of the series. There are signs that some of the Mayans may be leaving, but we shall see.

Ez is also isolating himself more and more from the club, not physically but mentally. He knows he may be over his head with all this happening, but he doesn’t show it. He is smart but not smart enough to win this war. He doesn’t have the experience that Bishop (Michael Irby) does. I want to see how the final two episodes will play out and who will survive.

Mayans MC S5x08 Creeper in a casket

Creepers funeral at the clubhouse was sad. It was great to see Taza (Raoul Max Trujillo) again, even if it was for a funeral. Creeper’s sister (Yadi Valerio Rivera)-Emilio Rivera’s real life wife-spoke about how Creeper made sure that the two of them would be taken care of since their mother didn’t have the wherewithal to do it. She mentioned that ever since joining the Mayans, he was happy and loved each one of his brothers. She had singled out Ez and how much Creeper loved and was loyal to him. You could see how that statement affected Ez. “I killed my brother. I killed Creeper,” Ez says, and the audience thinks he is confessing, but not quite. He says he regrets that it happened on his watch, and Creeper’s sister consoles him as if to say it wasn’t his fault…if she only knew.

Mayans MC S5x08 A toast to Creeper

I also loved how each club member toasted Creeper with bottles of water. Seeing that his brothers honored his sobriety and kept that memory alive was wonderful. It goes to show how much Creeper meant to them.

Kody (Stella Maeve) made an appearance at the funeral as well. I know she has it out for Ez, and in next week’s preview, she said she wants Ez dead. The one thing I wondered about Creeper’s death is, did he leave a note about who the rat was? I would have done that knowing how prison can be and what transpired between him and Ez in a previous episode. That would be the most logical thing, at least to me.

Mayans MC S5x08 Hope commits suicide to stop Isaac from hurting Letty

Hope and Letty escaped from where Hope was being held with the help of Terry (Greg Vrotsos), who seemed to have grown a conscience. With Letty and Hope driving down the highway, Hope tells Letty that Isaac will find them. Letty doesn’t believe her and says they’ll move to Chicago and get jobs. She also mentioned Chuckie (Michael Ornstein), -a fan favorite-implying that he may be able to help them. It was nice to hear that name again, as Chuckie was always a beloved character in the series. Hope kept telling Letty that Isaac won’t stop. I was surprised that Letty was that naïve about what Hope told her. She should know better than that. What Hope did next was heartbreaking. She screamed at Letty to stop the car; she exited the vehicle and thanked Letty for the best few months of her life, of being her sister and best friend. When she told Letty that she was setting her free, I knew something bad was about to happen. Hope then fell back into oncoming traffic and was struck by a truck.

Mayans MC S5x08 Hopes suicide to stop Isaac breaks Lettys heart

I know that this season we have seen quite a few deaths, some more brutal than others, but this death, I felt, was right in the context of the series. Right in the sense that Hope knew no matter where she went with Letty that Isaac would find them. Running for the rest of her life Is not how she wanted to live, constantly looking over her shoulder. Hope died on her terms; she died her way. She wasn’t going to give Isaac or anybody else the satisfaction of ending her life; she did it on her terms. That is heroic, tragic, and selfless. She saved Letty’s life by sacrificing her own; that’s what a hero does. I loved how the writers displayed the Suicide hotline at the end of the episode. I hope (pun intended) it helps those that need it.

Mayans MC S5x08 Sofia is blocked out emotionally by Ez

Sophia (Andrea Cortes) trying to reach out to Ez was heartbreaking. It was a short scene, but powerful in that she warned him that he was losing her.

Ez intends to spare everyone he loves and let himself be the martyr. It’s almost like it was his fate. His relationship with everyone he’s loved has shifted and changed so much over the series that he inevitably isolates himself.

Mayans MC S5x08 Bottles sees the Broken Saints ranch in flames

The last scene of Bottles (Alex Barone) and Guero in the van heading to the Broken Saints ranch was hilarious. Their banter at the gas station was comedy gold; I loved how both actors let loose on each other. As the men approach the ranch, they run out of gas, and Guero instructs Bottles to get out and push since he is the Prospect. Bottles notices flames coming from the ranch. The next scene is the fentanyl lab in flames and bodies being carried out. The flames are illuminated in Bottles glasses; that was a nice touch.

Mayans MC S5x08 Hank and Ez in the boardroom

Two episodes remain. Knowing Elgin James and Kurt Sutter, the ending will be epic. We shall see who, in the end, is left standing and who will ride off into the sunset. Regardless of what happens, it will be a fantastic ride. As for the series finale episode, I will attend San Diego Comic-Con that evening. Therefore, I will not be able to watch the finale and will watch the final episode once I return home on July 24th. What I plan on doing for my review is writing about the entire series from season one to season five. I want to write about how groundbreaking this series has been and my likes and dislikes about it. Please be patient with me; it will take much re-watching of the series to get my full thoughts on paper.

Welcome back Mayans MC “Bottles” lovers,

Mayans MC S5x05 Bottles with Elio

Everyone we know enjoys the Mayans character “Bottles” portrayed by Alex Barone who joined the cast for the fifth and final season of this superb series. Alex is excellent as “Bottles” bringing a softer human element to the series that deals with serious societal issues such as gang warfare, violence, drug distribution, and the southern United States border issues in the fictional town of Santo Padre, an environment that highlights not only these issues, but peals back the veneer to focus on the families involved that are dealing with the challenges of life.

Alex Barone brings an authentic realism to his role as “Bottles”, a “Prospect” (neophyte) in the Mayans organization when he is required to produce large amounts of illegal Fentanyl, a deadly narcotic that has become the financial lifeblood of the Mayans in the fifth season. Always loyal to the Mayans club, “Bottles” has many genuine human interaction moments with other club members not directly related to his role as a “Prospect”. We here at TeamWHR admire Alex for his outstanding portrayal of “Bottles” in Mayans MC and for a wonderful interview conducted on July 03, 2023 that is included below. Thanks Alex!

Mayans MC Final Season Reviews To Fear of Death, I Eat the Stars – But All Cannot Survive the Scars!

Mayans MC banner 2021 - Crop

    Welcome back Mayans MC lovers,

    Mayans MC season five poster

With the seventh episode of the fifth season on Mayans MC, the series pilled out the body bags in large numbers after last episode “My Eyes Filled and Then Closed on the Last of Childhood Tears” when viewers began to realize that things were going to come to confrontation subsequent to Ez (JD Pardo) and Angel (Clayton Cardenas) taking out and burying Sons of Anarchy (SOA) member Happy Lowman (David Labrava). Viewers will recall that Happy was the person responsible for the death of their mother Marisol Reyes many years earlier. No doubt this killing action will accelerate the war between the Mayans and the SOA.

That the body count in this episode climbed quickly was not unexpected as the series enters the final stretch to end of the Mayans MC program as we know them only three episodes in the near future. What was shocking to many viewers including this editor was that two revered characters were killed, including Creeper (Joseph Raymond Lucero), Luisa “Adelita” (Carla Baratta) in specific. Other characters that were taken out were Jess (Grace Rizzo), Diaz (Alex Fernandez) and his sidekick Jinx (Giovanni Rodriguez) who were visiting from the Oakland Mayans to protest the killing of Happy Lowman.

Mayans S5x07 Emily in shock after killing Mrs Buksar

One of the main Mayans character we never suspected of violence, Emily Thomas (Sarah Bolger), totally lost it and killed Mrs. Buksar (Kathleen Quinlan) whose son had been killed as a result of actions by Ez who then threatened Emily and Ez when she made a visit to honor her dead son with a charitable donation. The rage on Emily’s face was palpable when she smashed Mrs. Buksar’s skull during the encounter.

Following in the footsteps of the iconic SOA series that was the precursor to Mayans, viewers must realize that almost all main SOA characters were killed off, and so it will be that many central Mayans characters will also be killed off. The real question then becomes which of the series main characters will be fortunate enough to survive the next three episodes? Before proceeding we include a very interesting feature courtesy of FX Networks about JD Pardo directing “I See the Black Light“.

To Fear of Death, I Eat the Stars:

Mayans S5x07 Letty found on the side of the road by the Broken Saints

The episode written by Vivian Tse and directed by Elgin James opens with what appears to be a miraculous escape by Letty (Emily Tosta) from the clutches of evil Isaac (JR Bourne). We observe Letty on the pavement, at night, just as the Broken Saints led by Johnny Panic (Caitlin Stasey) come down the road and encounter Letty. There is no sign of Hope (Vanessa Giselle) with viewers rightly becoming concerned that Isaac has killed Hope and left Letty for dead on the side of the road. The Broken Saints appear just in time to save Letty’s life and take her to their ranch where Ez has moved the Mayans Fentanyl Factory to escape detection.

Mayans S5x07 Does Letty follow orders

As we learn later, it is all a deception. Letty is still following orders from Isaac to save Hope’s life. Isaac knows all about this since Letty is observed spying on the drug factory peering through the walls witnessing the Fentanyl fabrication taking place. No doubt this is what Isaac was taking about when he threatened Letty that he would kill Hope unless he got something back that was stolen from him (Isaac). Obviously, with the Mayans now in charge of Fentanyl distribution in the San Bernadino area, Isaac is blackmailing Letty who is doing this to save Hope’s life!

Mayans S5x07 Ez takes notes from the On War book

We are next with Ez who is taking notes from a famous book called “On War” by General Carl von Clausewitz about what the Mayans are going to do about the war with the SOA.

Speaking to himself while writing Ez says “You can’t beat your enemy without bloodshed” and “The only route to peace is complete annihilation”. There is no doubt that complete annihilation is precisely what Ez plans to do.

Mayans S5x07 Angel wakes up alone tries to call Adelita

A segue finds us with Angel in bed alone. Adelita has already left on her mission dictated by Soledad (Selene Luna) to kill Ez. Angel calls Adelita to no avail, but while picking up their son Maverick from his bed, Angel finds a fortune is cash hidden underneath the mattress in Maverick’s bassinet. Viewers know that Adelita has told Filipe (Edward James Olmos) that she has been stealing drug sales cash from Soledad. What viewers are about to find out is that she plans to disobey orders and kill Soledad instead of Ez.

Mayans S5x07 Bishop messes up his relationship with Maggie

Next we come to another tragic scene with Bishop (Michael Irby). In previous episodes he had promised Maggie (Presciliana Esparolini) to be loyal to her while he gave up drugs he had been doing again with Treenie (Augie Duke). Maggie comes to visit Bishop as a surprise at his home. When she enters the bedroom, Maggie finds Bishop in bed with Treenie. Bishop tries to explain, but it is too late. Maggie leaves them both saying “I don’t know you, I don’t want to know you”. Maggie slaps Bishop stating as she leaves “We did it, we fucked it up”. I and many viewers had truly hoped that Bishop would find his way clear and be loyal to Maggie, but alas, this is not to be.

    Mayans S5x07 15 kilos pressed

We then move to Ez, Gilly (Vincent Vargas) and Hank (Frankie Loyal) who are meeting with Cole (Branton Box) to deliver the next shipment of Fentanyl, this time even more. Now the Mayans are delivering some fifteen kilos in total that Elio (Luis Fernandez-Gil) and Bottles (Alex Barone) are producing in ever larger quantities at the secret Broken Saints ranch Fentanyl facility.

Cole confirms that Ez now has complete control of the California prisons “up to the Oregon border” meaning that Ez can now have Creeper executed to seal the leak of the few people who know that Ez cooperated with the authorities to obtain early release from prison himself many years ago. In exchange for this power, Ez is told that he must pay off the prison authority motorcycle clubs Iron War and Storm 88 with fifty percent of the gross revenue from “everything” to maintain control of the prisons.

Mayans S5x07 Emily is spattered with blood when she kills Mrs Buksar

Now comes one of the most frightening scenes in the episode where Emily meets with Mrs. Buksar at her home to help others to avoid the tragedy of gang related violence. Emily is sincerely offering to set up a charity to honor the loss of her son Marlon (David Clayton Rogers), a death that was made to appear to be a suicide, but Mrs. Buksar was really a murder. This effort seems to be going well with Mrs. Buksar listening intently until she turns of Emily letting her know that she plans to seek revenge on Ez and Emily herself. Emily in obvious loyalty to Ez, loses it and kills Mrs. Buksar in an act of violent rage. Bodyguard Luis (Michael Anthony Perez) and Emily then cleans up the murder scene at house making it appear to be an accident.

Mayans S5x07 Bottles and Guero happy to see Elio at the Broken Saints ranch

All seems to be going well for Letty at the Broken Saints club who is doing her part in working by salvaging copper wire from appliances and electronic device by smashing them to bits when the Mayans show up with Bottles and Guero (Andrew Jacobs) who are happy to see Elio when they deliver more supplies and chemicals required to make the drugs. Ez delivers Johnny Panic’s weekly cash “cut” while Letty hides to not be seen, but now knows that the cash payoff and building where the chemicals are being delivered is what Isaac has ordered her to confirm. That evening Letty sneaks outside and peers into the drug fabrication facility to make certain that she has correctly identified Isaac’s target.

    Mayans S5x07 Will Creeper survive

Another shocking scene occurs when we are with Creeper at the prison who is in process of making a phone call to Hank to reveal the details of “the rat” (Ez) in the Mayans. As he is calling, just as Hank picks up his cell phone and hears the call is coming from the prison, a large group of inmates attacks Creeper, apparently beating and stabbing him to death. What we do not know is if Creeper was actually killed or could he have survived the ordeal as several fans conjectured after the episode? If Creeper did survive, then it is possible that he could still let Hank know that Ez was the (another) “rat”?

Mayans S5x07 Adelita takes aim at Soledads HQ

During the episode Adelita launches her raid on Soledad’s headquarters, kills several of her henchmen, steals more duffle bags full of cash and tries to kill Soledad. Unfortunately, Adelita is wounded in the process and barely makes her escape from the area. She heads to seek aid from Mini (Melany Ochoa), someone Adelita believes she can trust. Tragically, Soledad has turned Mini to her side and kills Adelita when she least expects it. I was saddened by the loss of Adelita and her attempt to make a life for Angel, herself and their son, but this too is not to be.

Mayans S5x07 Angels visits Filipe seeking answers about Adelita

Angel goes to visit Filipe with his son Maverick who is not feeling well. Angel tells Filipe that he has been calling Adelita all day without success and found huge amounts of cash under Maverick’s mattress. Angel wants to know if Filipe was told anything by Adelita. “I don’t know son” says Filipe but in reality Filipe does know and doesn’t want to break his son’s heart. It is at this time that Adelita is visiting Mini who betrays and stabs her to death. Many fans including myself were very disappointed that Adelita did not survive. We had hoped that she, Angel, Maverick and Filipe could live happily ever. No happy ending for Adelita my friends, a memorable character portrayed by an excellent actress during all five years in the series.

    Mayans S5x07 Nestor kills Jess

Outside the club, Nestor (Gino Vento) has taken Jess on a ride to the hills under the guise that he likes her. Hank had discovered that that Jess was a “rat” on the Mayans and Nestor kills her in the car.

Hank shows up to congratulate Nestor on taking care of the situation and to clean up the crime scene by pouring gasoline on the car to destroy the evidence of the murder.

As a result of this development it looks like Nestor will no longer he a “Prospect” and earn his Mayans patch for this.

Mayans S5x07 War rages on but Hank Bishop and Guero survive for now

The last mind blowing scene that is important to moving the story arc along occurs when Ez and the Mayans call a leaders meeting at the club. Ez announces that they will pay the fifty percent to Iron War and Storm 88.

Suddenly, Diaz, leader of the Oakland Mayans and his bodyguard Jinx show up entering the board room complaining that the Mayans should not have killed Happy Lowman since it only serves to escalate tensions between the Mayans and the SOA.

Mayans S5x07 Planning the future in the Mayans boardroom

Ez lays out the strategy for the future, explaining that it was required to send a message to the SOA, then offers Dias his chapters cash cut from the drug sales as they walk into the bar. Just when it seems to be settling down, Guero pulls pistol and kills Dias in retribution for the loss of his father. Bishop, with no choice left to him, kills Dias’ henchmen so that there are no witnesses to the slaughter.

Perhaps the only good news for a specific character in the episode is for Hope who is featured in the preview for the next episode “Her Blacks Crackle and Drag” included below. Our sincere hope (pun intended) is that Letty is actually setting Isaac up and that she and Hope will lure him into for a trap!

Mayans MC Final Season Reviews My Eyes Filled and Then Closed on the Last of Childhood Tears – The Past Comes to Light With All Our Fears!

Hello my fellow Mayans MC fans,

    Mayans MC season five poster

We are halfway through the series, and only four episodes remain, and these last episodes will be the most intense, bloody, and volatile episodes of the entire series. The title of Episode six is “My Eyes Filled and Then Closed on the Last of Childhood Tears” by Miriam Hernandez. Once again, the family played a significant role in this episode. The entire series has been about family in some way, shape, or form. It redefines what family means.

The preview showed scenes from an earlier episode of Adelita (Carla Baratta) and the secret life she has been leading, Hank (Frankie Loyal) and Nails (Justina Adrorno) reconnecting. Bishop (Michael Irby) finally chooses life with Maggie (Presciliana Esparolini).

We also learn that Sofia (Andrea Cortes) talked to Ez (JD Pardo) about his brother Angel (Clayton Cardenas), but we don’t know what was said. I assume it was about the warehouse fire, but we don’t know and can only speculate.

First, let me start by saying that this episode is my absolute favorite of the entire series. You heard me, the whole series, not just the season. It has much to do with the director, a favorite of mine, Allison Anders. Her resume is filled with television work, but her early life, in general, makes her directing so specific. She captured the tension in this episode so exquisitely; more later.

The beginning of the episode shows the progression and change the Reyes brothers have gone through during this series. They have switched places, with Angel now a bit softer and Ez having those hard edges more prominent than before. When Ez shows up unexpectedly at Angel’s house, we immediately think this isn’t a good situation. The tension is tangible, and it’s palpable. Watching this scene and the others that follow with these two brothers is one of the reasons I love this episode.

When you have a director like Allison Anders behind the camera who understands this situation, it makes the entire episode and the scenes with the two brothers much better. The razor-sharp tension was felt throughout. I cannot tell you how often I was on the edge of my seat watching this episode, especially the scenes between Ez and Angel. I am so enamored of Allison and her work, and I am absolutely in awe of how brilliantly she directed this episode. I think this is one of my absolute favorite episodes of any television series I’ve ever seen. And that’s high praise, considering how critical I can be about film and television.

Mayans MC S5x06 Angel with Maverick

You could tell in that particular scene the uneasy feeling Angel had going into that situation with his brother. Clayton Cardenas has done phenomenal work this season. This episode, in particular, is some of his finest work, and he should be incredibly proud of himself. I’ve never doubted his talent, but this episode showcased it to the enth degree and highlighted his skill as an actor and ability to show the full range of emotion and understand his instrument. I was absolutely in awe of him again and of JD Pardo and what they brought to the scenes between the brothers. That will be one thing I miss when this series finally ends. The excellent actors that I got to know and was introduced to through this series I am and will always be a lifelong fan of.

Mayans MC S5x06 Vanessa Joy Smith cinematography

The other thing I loved in this episode was the cinematography which Vanessa Joy Smith again did. It was breathtaking and reminded me of some of my favorite films done by some of my favorite cinematographers. Seeing that landscape featured in a television series is a joy. That kind of detail in a series could be more prominent. But Vanessa did such an incredible job that it took my breath away, and I applaud her and her extraordinary vision with this particular episode.

Mayans MC S5x06 Emily trains to defend herself

One part of episode I also really enjoyed was seeing Emily (Sarah Bolger) embrace a slightly different part of herself. I loved her interaction with Luis (Michael Anthony Perez) when he was teaching her to shoot guns at empty bottles. I enjoy that they have a quirky friendship happening between them instead of the bodyguard situation, that they usually have in the past. I think Emily was not used to that kind of softness regarding her bodyguard, coming from a man who kills people for a living as Luis had said to Emily, he doesn’t particularly care for that part, but it is part of his job.

Mayans MC S5x06 Emily and Luis level with each other

It was also exciting to know that Luis told her that he knew you would leave in the grocery store. Emily replied “Were you going to let me?” Luis replied “He won’t let you ever.” when Emily questioned why he didn’t tell Miguel, he said “It didn’t happen. It won’t ever happen”, which means that yes, he is loyal to Miguel but also understands why Emily wants to leave. And this whole scenario, at least to me, looked like Luis was trying to help Emily escape Miguel (Danny Pino) teaching her how to shoot guns. If that’s not foreshadowing for something happening to Miguel at the hands of Emily, I don’t know what else is. But it was also lovely to see Emily understand Louise and where he comes from and where his loyalties lie again family family family. That has always been one of the major themes of this entire series from the beginning.

Mayans MC Angel and Ez drive to their destiny

My favorite scene in the series is Angel and Ez driving to a deserted area, and Angel not knowing his fate. The scenery is impeccable. It reminds me of the incredible movie Paris, Texas or Days of Heaven with the sparse scenery, the barren landscape, and just the simplicity and beauty of that part of the country. When Ez informs Angel that it is their mother’s death anniversary, he tells him, “I hope she forgives me for what I am about to do.” as a viewer of the series, that line terrified me because, with all that we know up till now, that indicates that something horrible and intense would happen. You could feel that tension again. Kudos to Allison Anders for allowing viewers to feel it.

Mayans MC Filipe visits Adelita and Maverick

As always, I do love watching scenes with Edward James Olmos. His scenes as Filipe are always quiet but loud at the same time. Olmos is a tremendous actor who gives 1000% every time he’s on-screen. His subtlety is masterful, and his skill is absolute perfection. It’s also wonderful to see him in the role now as a grandfather instead of just a father.

That has transformed him into a softer human. We can credit Maverick, Luisa and Angel’s son for infusing his infectious smile and wonderful personality upon the Reyes family. He has turned those hardened men into the men they’ve always been, as Luisa (Adelita) points out to Felipe about Angel.

Mayans MC S5x06 Ez aims at Angel like he is going to kill him before going into the cabin

When Ez and Angel stop at the small shack in the middle of nowhere, Angel notices shovels in the back of the truck. He asks Ez what they are for, and Ez tells him “We are going to bury a body.” Angel is noticeably scared. Ez asks him “Do you trust me Angel?” answers no, and Ez says “That’s the fucking problem.” Again, family, loyalty, blood, sangre y sangre. I cannot stress enough how incredible Clayton was in this particular scene. His physicality, you could tell 1000% how terrified he was. It’s a subtle change in his demeanor, but you knew that he was terrified of his brother and that he was going to kill him and felt it. As the director myself, watching that kind of scene between two actors is what I thrive on, it’s what I live for, it’s what I need in my life. It may sound weird, but when you have that kind of realism in acting, it’s not acting anymore, it’s living. You could see tear stream down Clayton’s face. I don’t know if that was intentional or the director’s or the actor’s choice, but it was perfect in that scene. It made sense”, and when he says to Ez, “Mom wouldn’t want us to hurt each other she’d want us to be together.” Then Ez says “That’s why we’re here,” and when we see Ez raising the gun…the way that it was shot, the way that Clayton just internally collapses, not physically. Still, you could see his physical body change what natural acting is about, and the score by Marlon Lang that accompanied this scene added to the intensity of the situation. It was beautifully well done.

Mayans MC S5x06 Happy Lowman in his last moments alive

Seeing  Happy Lowman (David Labrava) again was great. He has always been one of those characters that, yes, he’s evil, but that’s why you love him, and it’s always great to see him. I am always a fan of the villains you love to hate because they make episodes and series more interesting. They bring that element to their characters, adding depth to whatever they are in. It was also interesting to hear the name Chibs be mentioned; that may hint that we might see him in the remaining series of episodes. Because we do know that the Sons of Anarchy will show up again, we just don’t know who, in addition to Isaac (JR Bourne), will be part of those episodes when he mentioned that killing Ez and Angel’s mother was business and not personal that reminded me of course of mob hits which are always business not personal. It also is very telling about how it’s Ez that is holding the gun and is pointing it at Happy that it was Ez who came up with this entire plan not Angel. From the very beginning of the series Angel was the one that was always the bad ass, that was always the killer, that was always the stronger of the two brothers. Still, that has completely changed, and they have almost swapped personalities.

Mayans MC S5x06 Ez prepares to kill Happy Lowman

“You set this all in motion and destroyed all of our lives,” Ez says to Happy, which was the whole purpose of Ez’s journey. The only reason why Ez is became part of the Mayans is because of Happy and because what he did set in motion. What he was hired to do, if Marisol did not get killed, none of what we have been seeing the last two seasons would be possible. Ez would not have gone to jail, he would have most likely married Emily, and settled down and had a happy family once he graduated college. Angel would have still been part of the Mayans. But one split-second decision changed not only Ez’s life but the entire trajectory of his future and the future of everyone around him that he’s ever loved. When Happy reaches for his gun again, Ez  protects his brother as he did from Gabby (Sulem Calderon).

Mayans MC S5x06 Angel and Ez bury Happy Lowman

The scene with the two brothers finished burying Happy is where the cinematography is at its absolute finest, that scene of them with the light and the windmill and just the quietness of that scene. Still, the heaviness of the scene is absolutely incredible and completely palpable. In a way, Angel scolds Easy about killing Happy but Ez says that all Reyes men will ever be are killers. It’s a bold statement, and all four of them, including Miguel, who is technically a Reyes by blood, have killed. When Angel walks away from his brother to clear his head, putting that distance between him and Ez, I believe, foreshadowing for what’s happening or what will be happening in the next four episodes leading up to the finale. With Angel now being a father and being a “husband” that completely changes the game for him. It changes it so much that he it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if he decided to pull back from the Mayans and almost quit because of the promise he made to Adelita to keep Maverick safe, to keep Adelita safe and to keep himself safe. I’m not sure about the flowers that Clayton picks up, but they may be marigolds, and in Mexican culture, it’s deeply rooted in pre-Hispanic Aztec rituals tied to the goddess Mictecacihuatl, or the Lady of the Dead, who allowed spirits to travel back to earth to commune with family members. That tradition was blended with the Roman Catholic observance of All Saints Day by the Spaniards when they conquered Mexico.

Mayans MC S5x06 Soledad tells Adelita she must do one more assasination to be free

Soledad (Selene Luna) asks Luisa to do a job, and once she does that job, she will be set free again, mentioning Potter (Ray McKinnon) and how he forced her to work with her.

Once she does this deed for Soledad, she’ll be free. “Kill this annoying stray, and you and your family will be free” She hands her an envelope with the picture and says it needs to be done by midnight, no excuses.

Mayans MC S5x06 Ez and Filipe in church

The church scene toward the end of the episode with Ez and Filipe was heartbreaking no dialogue at all, but none was needed in that scene. The brilliance of two actors playing in a scene without dialogue is the body language.

The atmosphere and the way that they can convey emotion without any words, again, it is a true testament to not only the brilliant skill of both of those incredible actors, but of the director. How Allison was able to convey the tension between the father and son and how the broken part of their relationship is still not mended even though they are both there for Marisol, their fractured family is still very present.

Mayans MC S5x06 Ez is Adelitas assasination target set by Soledad

The last scene in the episode is Adelita’s sitting at the table cleaning her gun and the picture of whom she’s supposed to kill next to her. As the camera moves closer, we finally see whom she is supposed to kill by midnight with no excuses, and that person is Ez. I am gob smacked as to what she’s going to do. This is her family. This is her brother-in-law. If she kills Ez, what’s going to happen to Angel? Will Angel fall apart? She is in a no-win situation in this scenario.

The preview of next week’s episode shows the lengths the Mayans will go to make money. It shows Cole (Branton Box), shows Letty (Emily Tosta) and what Isaac had made her do. It moves the story further to the ultimate crescendo, which will happen toward the end of the series. It will be, no doubt, an intense last four episodes of the series. Creeper finally tells Hank who the rat is. I cannot wait to see how this will play out or how easy we’ll try to escape this situation.

Thank you to all the Mayans fans who have been watching this series from the beginning and have been tweeting along with us during the episodes. It’s always wonderful to see your comments and especially when the actors themselves chime in with hints or retweets. It will be a hell of a ride till the end, that’s for sure as the last four episodes unfold.

Mayans MC Final Season Reviews I Want Nothing But Death – As Some Take Their Last Breath!

    Welcome back Mayans MC lovers,

    Mayans MC season five poster

We are now on the fifth episode, the halfway point of the fifth season on Mayans MC. The series creators have made a decision to pivot the focus on several questions that the series admirers have been waiting to be addressed.

Ez (JD Pardo) visits Creeper (Joseph Raymond Lucero) who is in prison where he confronts his friend about what he knows about the “rat” that Kody aka Katie McNeill (Stella Maeve) has told Creeper about. Creeper does not believe it, but this is subsequent to Kody listening to the recordings where Ez is discussed during the previous episode “I See the Black Light”.

Soledad (Selene Luna) and Miguel Galindo (Danny Pino) have a discussion about the theft of materials from them that has allowed Ez to fabricate Fentanyl after Elio (Luis Fernandez-Gil) was kidnapped from the cartel. Viewers will recall that Bottles (Alex Baraone) and Elio become the Mayans “cooks” to make large amounts of Fentanyl.

The large Fentanyl production allows Ez to fulfill his promise to Cole (Branton Box) to supply him ten kilos of the deadly drug. This generates a fair sum of money for the Mayans and gives Ez the ability to control the prison guards who also operate the Iron War Motorcycle Club.

Mayans MC S5x05 Ez after a fight to the death

This in turn is how Ez is able to get into the prison to visit Creeper and set him up for retribution. Therefore, even if Ez has Creeper taken care of, it will do little good since both Kody and Jay-Jay’s (Greg Serano) uncle knows the details of the deal Ez made to shorten his own prison sentence.

This pivot point came an episode early in my opinion with a fight to the death between one of Isaac’s henchmen and Ez. However, with only five episodes now remaining, it may be the smart move to pivot in episode five since so many items need to be covered before the series concludes in July. One such item is Emily (Sarah Bolger) escaping from evil Miguel since she was stopped from doing so in this episode.

    I Want Nothing But Death:

Mayans MC S5x05 Angel takes aim during the drive by shooting on the SOA

This pivotal episode was directed by Elgin James who did his usual outstanding job in an episode wonderfully written by Sean Varela.

The episode opens with Angel and the Mayans leading a drive by hit squad at night against the Sons of Anarchy (SOA) who are out dining with friends at a restaurant. This drive by hit is the an act of retribution for the murder of Coco (Richard Cabral) that occurred last season in Oakland California.

The situation has become more intense since the SOA has moved into an area of San Bernadino, California, territory long considered to be the sovereign territory of the Mayans in Santo Padre. This incident sets off the war between the Mayans and the SOA that will result in only one thing: “Nothing But Death”.

Mayans MC S5x05 Lucky of the Grim Bastars arrange a meeting with the SOA

However, before the war gets out of control, another motorcycle club named the Grim Bastards arrive at the Mayans headquarters. Bottles is guarding the entrance to the Mayans club when Nestor (Gino Vento) and Ez come to the gate to meet  the Grim Bastards.

Several members of the all black club, led by a man named Lucky (Gilbert Glenn Brown), offer an opportunity to moderate a no weapons meeting between Isaac’s SOA and the Santo Padre based Mayans to settle the dispute. Subsequent to some discussion about the costs everyone has paid in deaths, Ez accepts the offer, seemingly in the interests of peace.

Mayans MC S5x05 Miguel tells Angel he knows about the warehouse fire arson

Miguel visits Angel (Clayton Cardenas) by catching him on the streets of Santo Padre when Angel is riding his motorcycle. They drive to an area outside the city where Miguel’s tells Angel that he reviewed the security videos of the night that the warehouse was torched by arson.

Miguel lets Angel know that he has proof that Angel is the one who set fire to it. Angel is looking genuinely concerned that Ez is going to find out about this, but Miguel says that if he does his part, the secrets can stay safe.

Mayans MC S5x05 Angel says no to fentanyl drug dealing

We learn later during a Mayans executive club meeting that Angel not only expresses his disdain for selling narcotics, he leaves the money from the Fentanyl sales on the Mayans meeting table at the club. At this point it becomes obvious that Angel does not like the drug aspects of the Mayans.

Angel is no doubt seeking a way to live his life with his wife Adelita (Carla Barata) and their infant son Maverick, which means leaving the Mayans, and his brother Ez, to fend for themselves.

Mayans MC S5x05 Patricia Devlin visits Emily at her home

During the episode Patricia Devlin (Dana Delany) has an argument with her boss who tells her to back off. Instead Patricia visits Emily (Sarah Bolger) at her home.

Patricia’s real purpose to have a chat with Miguel about how the Department of Justice (DOJ) has been paying over $36,000 a month for their home. This comes as a bit of a surprise to viewers to learn  the DOJ has been playing, and paying, both sides of the illegal drug trade.

Mayans MC S5x05 Patricia Devlin offers Miguel a deal to turn on Potter

Devlin offers Miguel a deal to cooperate with her office at DOJ in the investigation of corrupt Lincoln Potter (Ray McKinnon). Viewers will recall Devlin discovered Potters questionable inventory of various missing items and “inconsistencies in his (financial) accounting” while doing her job as the Deputy Assistant Inspector General of the Investigations Division of the Department of Justice in San Diego.

Based on Miguel’s body language it appears that he will accept the deal Patricia has offered. However, Miguel knows that Potter has extensive connections that could cause him and his family harm that is outlined in the episode six trailer included below.

Mayans MC S5x05 Isaac has no intention of cooperating

As the episode winds down, we are at the meeting negotiated by the Grim Bastards between the SOA and the Mayans. Ez tells Isaac that they can leave the San Bernadino area and all will be taken as a lesson. Ez tells Isacc this three times in a clam voice.

Here we learn that Isaac has no intention of cooperating. Instead Isaac tells Ez he wants a battle to the death for regional supremacy that will be done by selecting proxies.

Mayans MC S5x05 Ez smashes the SOA members head killing him

Isaac selects his strongest and largest SOA member to fight. Ez looks at his members and decides that he will fight for the Mayans. In a brutal hand to hand combat sequence, Ez prevails smashing the SOA members skull into the floor, killing him.

Thinking that this is the end and that Isaac will leave the area, it comes as no surprise that Isaac reneges on his word and defiantly leaves as Ez yells at him to leave the San Bernadino area. It is obvious that Isaac has no intention on living up the bargain, so the war will continue!

Mayans MC S5x05 Hope and Letty

The final scene we would like to focus on finds us with Hope (Vanessa Gisselle) and Letty (Emily Tosta) who are celebrating what they perceive to be a victory having stolen the money from a drug dealer that they needed to pay their back rent and avoid eviction. Unfortunately the dealer named Butterfly (Spenser Granese) knows Isaac (JR Bourne) who finds out where Hope and Vanessa live with a terrifying development during the end of this episode. Letty is told she must “do something” by Isaac while Hope is being held hostage if Letty does not do what she has been told. What precisely does Hope have to do? Viewers do not know and we will all have to wait to find out, hopefully in episode six!

Mayans MC Final Season Reviews – I See the Black Light in the Supermarket and in Shadow Secrets!

Mayans MC banner 2021 - Crop

    Hello my fellow Mayans MC fans;

    Mayans MC season five poster

As the final season starts to unfold more and more, the layers become more exposed.

We are almost halfway through the last season, and situations are becoming desperate and dire.

The title of this episode is “I See the Black Light,” which gave me cause to remember the prominent blacklight posters from 1967-1969. The posters often had hidden images or messages that could only be seen under a black light.

This Mayans MC episode was literal the “black light” of what is happening to the club, what is coming to light for everyone to see, and what will stand out leading to the conclusion of season five,

The preview showed scenes from an earlier episode where Ez (JD Pardo) had helped Emily (Sarah Bolger) once again and tried to intimidate Marlon Buksar (David Clayton Rogers). The meeting turns tragic, with Marlon accidentally getting shot. This incident will come back again indirectly in this episode.

Mayans MC S5x04 JD Pardo as Ezekiel Ez Reyes

We also learned in the previous episode “Do You Hear The Rain” that Creeper has been told there is a “rat” in the Santo Padre chapter that will be revealed to the core club members. This news is huge, as it will undoubtedly bring the downfall of the Mayans, and I fear a bloody end to some of the characters. The “black light” will reveal what has been hidden for so long.

This episode was the directorial debut of JD Pardo. He did a great job at capturing the tension and dire consequences the club faces. I do hope that JD will continue to direct. He has a beautiful knack for it. The episode written by Meredith Danluck upped the ante regarding moving the story forward and adding more tension to the already tense situation.

    I See the Black Light:

Mayans MC S5x04 Bishop learns that Creeper told Hank about the rat

Bishop (Michael Irby), the actual vice President of the Mayans, seems to be a de facto President even though Ez usurped him in season four. Bishop is the one who is negotiating more and understanding more the position the club is in and where the club needs to go.

With his VP status, he can watch from the sidelines but still has a significant hand in the club; whether Ez will allow Bishop courtesy remains to be seen. Bishop has the knowledge and the experience; Ez does not. Although Ez has book smarts, when it comes to the streets and running a club, Ez’s intelligence is a detriment instead of an asset.

Mayans MC S5x04 Hank tells Ez and Bishop about the rat

Hank (Frankie Loyal) drops the “rat” bomb to the inner leadership of Ez and Bishop of the information that has been provided by Creeper (Joseph Raymond Lucero), that there is a “rat” in their midst.

With this sensitive information now known by the core group of Angel (Clayton Cardenas), Bishop, Ez, and Hank, the tension and trust amongst the family is being tested. No doubt the trust between the Mayans leadership and the entire club will be tested further as the series winds down to a close this season.

Mayans MC S5x04 Elio becomes friends with Bottles

Despite the language barrier, I enjoy seeing Elio (Luis Fernandez-Gil) and Bottles (Alex Barone) become friends. In the world of the Mayans, seeing a glimmer of good can be a refreshing thing. I chuckled to myself as I was watching the drug-making scene; I could not help but compare it to Breaking Bad.  While getting ready to take a break, Elio notices the clear path to escape his captivity and gestures to Bottles, who had gotten up after being thrown to the ground by Lobo (Loki). Bottles reassure Elio that he (Bottles) isn’t a prisoner and that the club is his “familia.”

Mayans MC S5x04 Bottles becomes friends with Elio

While the men are taking a break, Bottles talks about how he didn’t have many friends and had 43 surgeries growing up. I couldn’t help but think of Alex’s life and how it paralleled Bottles’ circumstances. Alex makes it his mission to advocate and empower performers with differences in the industry. I applaud him for that and hope more actors do the same thing. With the mention of the family by Bottles and that being a running theme throughout the series, we, the viewer, must re-examine what we the viewer actually to be consider family.

Mayans MC S5x04 Sarah and Cristobol held hostage by Miguel

There are many different facets of family, and Mayans explore those facets. Because of family and that love, Ez was hurled into that world. Bishop started to head down a dark path in the past season because of a family.

Family in Mayans also means Miguel keeping Emily (Sarah Bolger) and their son Cristobol hostage, in fact prisoners in their home, unable to escape the situation with only brief encounters in the outside world of the local park and supermarket that offer only a small chance at fleeing Miguel’s cage.

Mayans MC S5x04 Sofia is unable to save Lobo from the overdose

With Lobo’s curiosity getting the best of him about what Elio and Bottles are doing, he enters the area where the fentanyl is being made, inhales the fumes without a mask, and overdoses. As Bottles panics and runs to the clubhouse to get rags, just as Sofia (Andrea Cortés) pulls up, he tells her he needs help, and she runs to find Lobo on the ground convulsing from an overdose. Screaming to the club members to call 911, they all stand around and watch Sofia desperately try and save him.  The club members standing around and watching Lobo die is a massive sign of how fentanyl overdoses are seen in society today. With the horrific epidemic of overdoses across the country, standing back and not doing anything to stop the spread seems to be the consensus. Mayans once again bring social issues to the forefront of the series.

Mayans MC S5x04 Nails surprise appearance

It was so incredible to see Nails (Justina Adorno) again. The writers kept that secret well, and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who yelled “NAILS!” when she appeared on screen again. The scene with her and Hank was great. The two actors have a natural, tangible chemistry shown in the scene. I hope that by the end of the series, Hank and Nails finally get the happy ending they deserve. As mentioned in a previous review, I am pleased to see the minor characters getting screen time and storylines. It helps break the insanity of the story, and for me, as a writer and director, sometimes the supporting characters are better than the main characters. They help breathe life into the stories and give us a glimpse of what it is like to be them.

Mayans MC S5x04 Ex visits Johnny Panic to make a deal

Ez visits Johnny Panic (Caitlin Stasey) to strike a deal that would benefit all of them. Panic makes it clear to Ez that they can handle situations on their own, and Ez agrees and adds that with the guns and drugs, it will be a beneficial deal for everyone. One of the members of Broken Saints Motorcycle Club asks Johnny how mother will feel about the deal, when I heard that, my ears perked up. Mother? Who is this mother, and who will she be played by? I hope they do reveal that in the next upcoming episodes. That scene also had Ez confess to her, “My hands are covered in blood. It’s fucking getting exhausting,” showing that he’s not as in control as he lets on.

Mayans MC S5x04 Sarah is ready to escape but is called a murderer by Marlon Buskars mother

Emily once again goes to the grocery store, this time under the pretense to buy ingredients to make Bolognese for dinner. Before entering the store, she spots the non-descript car she asked Ez to get for her escape from Miguel. She sends the maid and bodyguard in different directions to get items for dinner as she wheels the cart toward the door. She is so close but gets thwarted by a woman yelling “murderer” at her. We figure out that the woman is the mother of Marlon Buskar, the one that Ez accidentally killed. Despite this aborted attempt, I hope Emily can escape with Cristobal and finally be free of Miguel (Danny Pino) and that life!

Mayans MC S5x04 Adelita is told she has to do one more thing

Adelita (Carla Baratta) killing Señor Villa-Fuentes at his home was what we were waiting for. She got rid of the competition for the LNG pipeline and showed a bit of who she used to be. What she did not anticipate was the granddaughter hiding behind a couch, hiding during a game of hide and seek with her grandfather. That shook Adelita, and what followed was a fantastic scene between Angel and Adelita. Carla’s monologue about going to the beach with her father and him holding her as the waves crashed around her-“so loud, so big” she said she wasn’t scared because he was holding her; she felt safe. She made Angel always promise to keep Maverick safe, no matter the cost. The way the scene was shot was beautiful; the light on Carla’s face illuminated parts of it and kept parts in shadow. It showed what her character is like now, half in shadow. I liked that decision by JD to do that.

The scene between Ez and Sofia, where she rages against him when he enters the trailer after he refused to call 911 is excellent. We get a little further glimpse into what Sofia went through before she met Ez and the PTSD triggered when she was trying to help Lobo.

That kind of trauma stays with a person, and when she expresses herself to Ez, you can see that broken part of her; Andrea Cortes did an excellent job at conveying that emotion in her acting. Her “no more secrets” comment to Ez will be tested as the series progresses to its finale.

Mayans MC S5x04 Kody listens to the rat tapes

Kody (Stella Maeve), aka Katie McNeill, searches out Kevin Jimenez (Maurice Compte) to see if she can get answers to her questions about who the rat is in the Mayans. Once she seeks him out, she finds out he has been missing for a while and combs through his notes and taped conversations. Hearing the conversations between Jimenez and the “rat” she finds out that Jimenez is related to that person. Continuing to listen, she finally hears the name that will change the show’s course and possibly get her back into good graces with the powers that be. With that last scene of us finding out that Katie knows who the rat is and seeing this week’s episode, the stakes have become higher and more dire. I am hoping that we will see some characters we didn’t get to see in this episode like Letty (Emily Tosta), Hope (Vanessa Giselle), and Potter (Ray McKinnon). With Isaac (JR Bourne) and the other SOA members challenging Ez in a fight club setting, loyalties will be tested, and bloodshed will likely be the result.

Lastly, as we approach episode five, I hope we get an answer to the question of who burned down the warehouse at the end of season four. Enjoy this week’s episode “I Want Nothing But Death”. I know I will!

Mayans MC Final Season Reviews – Do You Hear the Rain and Do You Feel The Pain?

Mayans MC banner 2021 - Crop

    Welcome back Mayans MC fans,

    Mayans MC season five poster

As we enter the third episode of the fifth season on Mayans MC, the creators focus on the relationships we have come to enjoy over the past four seasons; Ez (JD Pardo) and Emily (Sarah Bolger), Adelita (Carla Baratta) and Angel (Clayton Cardenas), Hope (Vanessa Giselle) and Letty (Emily Tosta). As well we follow Marcus Alvarez, (Emilio Rivera) and Tessa Alvarez (Lillianna Valenzuela) who are adjusting to life since El Padrino is no longer being President of the Mayans. We also learn more about Filipe (Edward James Olmos) and his relationship with his sons. Last but certainly not least is the evolving relationship between Ez and Angel which is in a state of flux as a result of recent violent events.

There are other relationships developing that are of a non romantic nature. Primary to this is the Patricia Devlin (Dana Delany) who has discovered the questionable inventory of various missing items as she does her job as the Deputy Assistant Inspector General of the Investigations Division of the Department of Justice in San Diego.

What we do know is that Soledad (Selene Luna) and Miguel Galindo (Danny Pino) have obtained high technology automatic weaponry typically available only to the United States or other government agencies. Is Potter involved? Is this tied into the inventory issues at the DOJ? Both are highly likely.

    Do You Hear the Rain:

Mayans MC actor and director Danny Pino

This excellent episode was directed by Danny Pino who did an outstanding job in an exciting episode written by Vivian Tse. This episode delineates the return of Potter who is directly involved with the illegal activities we have witnessed in Santo Padre.

Now exposed by Patricia Devlin, a question surfaces about a “rat” that has betrayed the Mayans. Does this refer to Ez who was working with Potter to obtain release from prison known by his deceased prison pal Jay-Jay (Greg Serano). Or is there another person or persons who are betraying the Mayans?

Mayans MC S5x03 Ez prepares to assault the Fentanyl factory

The episode opens with Ez, Angel, Bishop (Michael Irby), Downer (Angel Oquendo), the new prospect Bottles (Alex Baraone) of the Mayans conducting a raid on a warehouse that contains large drums of the precursor chemicals needed to manufacture Fentanyl. In the process they capture the assistant to the “cook”, a man named Elio (Luis Fernandez-Gil) who will make the deadly narcotic for the Mayans in exchange for his life. The Fentanyl will be used to finance the Mayans war with Isaac (JR Bourne) and the Sons of Anarchy. It is a clear attempt to destroy Soledad and Miguel’s cartel.

Mayans MC S5x03 Inside the Fentanyl factory

The other critical development in the story arc is that the Santo Padre Mayans have taken aggressive action to replace the narcotics “pipeline” that was destroyed when the warehouse of illegal drugs was burned to the ground at the end of season four episode “When the Breakdown Hit at Midnight”. Although there are many potential suspects at this point, viewers do not know who burned the warehouse.

Mayans MC S5x03 Cole threatens Angel and his family

In what is a realistic pivot to mirror today’s society in the United States is that the Mayans take up “cooking” Fentanyl at their headquarters to replace the narcotic supply that have been cut off by Soledad and Miguel who are apparently also in process of setting up a cook factory across the border from San Diego. In the episode we learn that Ez will use Fentanyl to lure Cole (Branton Box) away from Soledad and Miguel. This factor raises a real world question; with an epidemic of Fentanyl sweeping the United States causing the overdose deaths of over 110,000 mostly young people so far, and with Border Patrol catching more and more of it at illegal and legal border crossings, how long until the precursor chemicals made by the China Communists are smuggled directly into western nations as depicted in this episode? Is it already happening?

Mayans MC S5x03 Creeper in the prison hospital

In a shocking development we move to Creeper’s (Joseph Raymond Lucero) who has been imprisoned. Creeper has been told by Kody, an undercover DOJ operative (only revealed to Creeper near the end of season four in “The Calling of Saint Matthew”) that she works for the DOJ and has heard about a “rat” infiltrating the Mayans. Viewers will recall that Creeper was nearly beaten to death in the season five two part opener and put in the prison hospital. Under the new DOJ procedures Kody cannot gain access to the information Creeper wants. However, upon being told she “spit her nasty spit down my throat” by Agent Melissa Lydecker (Carla Gallo) for dealing with Creeper at the prison. Kody is terminated, but not before Kody can steal her boss’s security badge off of her desk during the exit interview gaining access to the Records Room at DOJ where she reads a file to learn about an undercover man named “Kevin Jimenez”. Is this the “rat” the Mayans are seeking? Perhaps.

Mayans MC S5x03 Emily at the supermarket is planning to escape Miguel

We segue to Emily and her son Critobol who are out grocery shopping at “Food4Cheap” supermarket with Miguel’s faithful security guard Luis (Michael Anthony Perez )and Maria (Monica Estrada) the nanny.

During the previous episode viewers recall that Miguel has told Emily she can leave whenever she wants, but she will never be allowed to be alone with “his” son ever again. During this episode, we witness Emily planning an escape by counting out the seconds it will take to get through the back door of the supermarket, and into the parking lot to flee for freedom!

Mayans MC S5x03 Letty and Hope held at gunpoint

We are with Letty and Hope who are completung a dangerous mission stealing a huge bag full of money from local drug dealers. They flee the scene after Letty stabs one of the miscreants who is holding them at gunpoint during the theft with machine guns blazing after on their escape. Hope wants to take the money and leave the area, but Letty says this will always be her home. Hope gets sentimental and tells Letty that they can always be “ice cream tasters”. This editor prays that these two great characters do not become victims of the war they have created.

Mayans MC S5x03 Filipe visits Miguel in hopes of bringing the family together

We observe Filipe going through old boxes of items at his home finding letters and pictures of his wife and their children Ez, Angel, and Miguel when they were young. Filipe decides the time has come to once again let Miguel known they are all brothers and visits Miguel who threatens to kill Filipe if he ever shows up at his home again. Nevertheless, Filipe leaves the letters and pictures which later Miguel who reads and examines after Filipe leaves. Will this development soften Miguel’s hatred? We hope to find out later in season five.

Mayans MC S5x03 Emily and Ez meet in the park

Later in the episode, Emily and Ez share a tender moment on a park swing where they recall their earlier love for each other. We are left to wonder what would have happened had these two lovers stayed together and not entered the maze or cartels’ drug dealing, gang wars, revenge, retribution and crime? Emily asks Ez to stage an escape vehicle outside the supermarket for her. Ez agrees without asking her any questions. He knows that Miguel is holding her son hostage. On a side note, since this is the last season of Mayans, this editor thinks that it would be nice if Ez, Emily and Christobol could escape the hellish existence. It would be a happy ending that Emily deserves and we hope that it happens.

Mayans MC S5x03 Patricia Devlin reads Potter the riot act for his missing inventory items

Additionally, we learn that corrupt Lincoln Potter (Ray McKinnon) was not reinstated at the District Attorney’s office, he now works for the Department of Justice! Lincoln is grilled by Patricia Devlin about the DOJ inventory inconsistencies. Potter attempts to bullshit Devlin, makes a verbal threat, but is unsuccessful and falls into line for the time being. McKinnon and Delany are excellent veteran character actors with Potter being a character viewer love to hate and Devlin a character viewers love to admire. We are not given precise information on the missing items, however, Kody aka Katie McNeill (Stella Maeve) of the DOJ was observed in the weapons room and later in the records room. More on that later.

Mayans MC S5x03 Angel asks Bishop for advice

Back at the club Angel asks for Bishops advice on what he should do about his family and son? Even as Bishop continues his romantic relationship with Maggie (Presciliana Esparolini), while also being flirted with by the beautiful Mayans bar keep Treenie (Augie Duke) who he also used to consume drugs with. It appears that Bishop stay sober deciding to not go on a drug fueled binge with Treenie. Bishop leaves on his motorcycle with tears in his eyes saying to Angel that the Mayans is all he has left in his life. Bishop advises Angel should consider leaving the Mayans to save his son Maverick and heads home to Tessa telling her that he wants to stay “for good”. They kiss to seal the deal!

Mayans MC S5x03 Ez and Angel meet with Cole

As the episode winds down, two things happen. First we get a behind the scenes look at the Sons of Anarchy, some of whom like Terry (Greg Vrotsos) who tells Jazmine (Zhaleh Vossough), and Jess (Grace Rizzo) that “it’s going to get bad”. Some members are beginning to despise Isaac for his evil ways. Unfortunately, Issac appears to have control of the the majority of the members of the Sons of Anarchy. Or does he? Second, Ez and Angel track down Cole who is the distribution agent for the cartel operated by Soledad and Miguel feeding the Sons of Anarchy. Ez offers Cole kilo of Fentanyl if he will join the Mayans new efforts in the Santo Padre drug trade. Cole says he already has a partner but is surprised that they have come up with a large quantity of drugs since Soledad had cut them off. He also threatens Ez with knowledge that he knows about Ez’s raid and kidnapping of the “cook”.

Mayans MC S5x03 Cole takes the kilo and demands 10 more

Ez presses Cole (bluffing) that he can get a lot more Fentanyl easier without having to risk border crossings with Mexico to obtain massive quantities of the drug. Cole is reticent but appears to agree, taking the kilo and demanding they produce ten more kilos for Cole, stating “welcome to the big time”. Ez says okay but demands they want control of the prisons, part to avoid Creeper being attacked again and possibly killed, partly to buy time to obtain more chemicals to manufacture more Fentanyl. Subsequent to the meeting, Angel, who has been threatened by Cole at his home is concerned about Ez’s plan to convert Cole to their side. Ez assures Angel that they will succeed and that he will get the ten kilos of the drug.

Mayans MC S5x03 Hank learns from Creeper that a rat is inside the Mayans

The last scene of “Do You Hear the rain”finds us with Creeper who is calling Hank (Frankie Loyal) from inside the prison.

Apparently Kody has been able to get information to Creeper subsequent to her ransacking the Records Room at the Department of Justice. Creeper tells Hank “you have a rat” inside the Mayans. We do not know who Creeper says is the “rat” or if he actually did during the call. Nevertheless Hank gets a look of hatred on his face as the screen fades to black!

Mayans MC Final Season Reviews I Hear The Train A’Comin Lord Help My Poor Soul In The End Of Days!

Mayans MC banner 2021 - Crop

Hello my fellow Mayans MC fans,

    Mayans MC season five poster

This is my first post for season five, our beloved show’s latest and final season. Let’s review where we left off before I proceed with my review.

Toward the end of the last episode of season four “When the Breakdown Hit at Midnight” is when we found out something exciting. We were at a warehouse filled full of drugs. Suddenly, the warehouse where all of the drugs were, somehow burst in to flames!

There has been speculation across the Mayan MC fandom on Twitter and Facebook about who that person may have been that set that warehouse on fire. There have been people saying it was various characters, but no one knows for certain.

Some even speculated is was Isaac (JR Bourne) who everyone thought was dead, but returned in this episode. Others said it was one of the other Mayans. During the hiatus to season five, not one clue or hint was leaked from the cast or crews, so fans really want to know this detail!

The premiere gave us two episodes in a ten-episode season which I will analyze below.

It is bittersweet for me as a fan since this is not only the final season of the Mayans, but there will be no panel at San Diego Comic-Con this year.

So, this last hurrah is genuinely the last, and what a ride it has been so far and we look forward to a fabulous fifth season!

Since we were treated to a two-episode premiere, I will highlight the best of both episodes that move the story focusing on what are the most significant parts of both episodes.

    I Hear the Train A’Comin:

Mayans MC S5x01 Isaac is back

“I Hear the Train A’ Comin” is the title of episode one, written and directed by Elgin James and co-written by Meredith Danluck. The title made me think of the song Folsom Prison Blues by Johnny Cash. That title is the first few lines of that song. I guess maybe because prison is seen a few times in this episode, it was a subtle reminder of where the Mayans may be headed.

It was nice to see the Sons of Anarchy again in this episode, as I would no doubt expect since Kurt Sutter is still the co-creator of Mayans. JR Bourne (Isaac) is back with a vengeance this time, stopping at nothing to exert his power over different Mayan factions as the Presidente of the Sons of Anarchy SamDimo faction. I suspect that SOA will play a vital role in this final season. It’s only fitting for the franchise to bring both incarnations together. We will see who the victor will be in the end, with bloodshed to undoubtedly to be a part for everyone!

Mayans MC S5x01 Back at the club

I am happy to see Nestor (Gino Vento) is back, but alas, he is still a prospect, and another prospect named Bottles (Alex Barone) is wearing glasses. I’m glad to see another prospect, that takes a bit of the burden off of Nestor. It will also be interesting to see what this prospect has to do to prove himself and get a full patch. In addition to Bottles, we see another member Guero (Andrew Jacobs) who has joined the club, from what I gathered he was somehow tied to Ibarra (Mike Beltran) who was killed last season.

Mayans MC S5x01 Sofia stays wih Ez and they appear to be in love

The theme since the beginning of Mayans has always been family, whether it be blood or chosen. However, there is a definite shift in the Reyes family, as Angel (Clayton Cardenas) and Ez (JD Pardo) have pretty much traded places when it comes to their relationship with Felipe (Edward James Olmos). It will be interesting to see how the final connection between father and son ends. Ez and Sofia (Andrea Cortez) are moving their relationship along nicely, from what I could gather it looks like Sofia has moved into the trailer with Ez and Sally, or maybe it just looked that way?. She is still in his life and that is good, hopefully, she can ground him. I hope that Sofia is truly a ride-or-die with Ez, he has had too many people in life leave him.

Mayans MC S5x01 Soledad tells Ez how it is going to be

There is still no answer yet about who burned the warehouse full of heroin. I have a feeling we won’t find that out until the very end of the season, perhaps the last few episodes. That act of violence has everyone up in arms, from Soledad (Selene Luna) and Miguel to the Mayans and everyone who relied on that product. It. The Mayan factions question Ez and his leadership skills, even bringing up Alvarez (Emilio Rivera). Mentioning that they wouldn’t be in the mess they are in if he had been running things. Bishop (Michael Irby) is vocal as well. Even as Vice President, he still has the power to put the worried men at ease because he has been there.

Mayans MC S5x01 Miguel is clearly aligned with Soledad

Miguel (Danny Pino) is still working for Soledad and still has tension with Ez; I suspect that will always be there and that the root of it will always be Emily (Sarah Bolger). I wonder if the Reyes brothers will ever discover that Miguel is also their brother.

A new MC called Broken Angels was introduced in this episode, all women and total badasses. From the second the Mayans set foot in their ranch, they are shown just what kind of women they are…it seems to turn on Guero, who finds the strong women sexy. He may be a bit out of his element there, as well as the other men. I hope we see more of these women and what they can bring.

Mayans MC S5x01 Filipe with Angel and his grandson Maverick

The one part that has disappointed me is what has happened to Luisa “Adelita” (Carla Baratta), who decided to become a mother, resigned, at least for now, to being a mother to Maverick in a tender scene with Filipe and his grandson.

I am not used to seeing Luisa in that light. She was always strong, fearless, brutal, cunning, intelligent, and downright ruthless. Maybe being a mother has softened her a bit, but I hope we do get to see the Adelita again as she was when she was the leader of Los Olvidados.

Mayans MC S5x01 Hope escapes and frees the caged bird

I like that we see a bit of the other side of the Mayans, the everyday family life even for those who are not the main focus at this point in season five. Specifically, Letty (Emily Tosta) and Hope (Vanessa Giselle) showed that no matter what has happened, they are still sticking together. Whether it be hijacking, escaping pain medication addiction from drug dealers, or trying not to get evicted from their home, these two ladies have each others back.

On Hope and Letty’s eviction, it turns out that Coco (Richard Cabral) failed to pay rent for over a year and hence the eviction notice was issued. This did not sit well with Letty, she proves that she is indeed Coco’s daughter by the acid tongue-lashing she gave the landlord. Hope I assume is still struggling with staying clean and will be damned if she’ll go backwards. She owes it to Coco to stay clean, he didn’t die for her to go back to the streets.

Mayans MC S5x01 Adelita with grandpa Filipe

What we witness in the season five opener is a contrast for sure from what we have seen in previous seasons.

Finally, when Felipe is visiting Adelita and his grandson Maverick, Filipe once again tells Angel to be a better father than he was to his sons. As the age old adage goes; Felipe wants Angel to avoid “The sins of the Father being revisited upon the (his) sons…”

Mayans MC S5x01 Ez meets his nephew Maverick

One scene I loved watching was when Angel brought Maverick to see his Uncle. The way Ez lit up upon seeing him was incredible. It is like we saw the old Ez, the one before everything tragic happened. It gave him some hope, something to live for. I love that in every episode, we still glimpse Ez, that golden boy with his life ahead of him. Despite all the tragic events in Ez’s life, I think the original man is still in there. It comes out in unexpected places, and when Ez is deep in thought or with Emily, who still represents his old life.

Mayans MC S5x01 Johnny Panic leader of the Broken Saints

It was beautiful to see Creeper (Joseph Raymond Lucero) again, even if he is in prison. His loyalty is still intact even though he does get attacked and nearly beaten to death. I hope we get to see more of him in future episodes.

We also saw more of Hank (Frankie Loyal) in both episodes. I appreciate it when the writers give the secondary characters screen time. This includes a new character named Johnny Panic (Caitlin Stasey) leader of an all female motorcycle club named the Broken Saints that could very well be the spin off series in the future. All in all these professional touches made for a well-rounded first episode of The End of Days for Mayans MC!

    Lord Help My Poor Soul:

Mayans MC S5x02 An opium firld and a black SUV

Episode two, titled “Lord Help My Poor Soul,” was directed by Brett Dos Santos and written by Jenny Lynn opens in what appears to be an opium field with a black SUV visiting and then leaving the area. It delves more into the consequences of the war with the Sons of Anarchy and what the bloodshed will bring to both gangs. “Mayans were great once…under Alvarez”, Bishop also knows this. Yet, Bishop still holds his tongue, knowing that Ez may lead the club down a path that will kill them all. He is waiting for Ez to screw up so he can take back the club. Bishop is the voice of reason; some men still look to him for guidance. A name from the past is still part of the series, and I am so happy to hear it. Lincoln Potter (Ray McKinnon) is the corrupt Assistant U.S. Attorney in business with Soledad and Miguel. I hope that Ray McKinnon will appear in the show again. He always plays Potter perfectly; he is a unique actor who can play those kinds of characters well.

Mayans MC S5x02 Emily is told she will never be alone with her son

Sarah Bolger does appear in this episode, although she doesn’t speak. As much as it looks like she, Miguel, and Cristobal are a “family” again, that is far from the truth. It seems that Miguel holds Emily captive even though he says she can leave at any time, just not with their son. I hope Emily will finally be free of Miguel this season and take Cristobal far away from Santo Padre.

Ez going to see Padrino was a bold move, considering he was the one that ousted Marcus, to begin with, using the killswitch clause in the club’s bylaws. Miguel told him that the club life was done for him and that he didn’t want to do it anymore. As bright as Ez is, he still has much to learn about being a leader of an MC. He is like the private who thinks he knows more than the general who has seen battle. It will be interesting to see if Marcus does indeed come back.

Mayans MC S5x02 Dana Delany of The Department Of Justice

One new addition to the series I am thrilled to see is Dana Delany. Many wonder if she will reoccur in this last season or if her character is in this one episode? It appears her as yet unnamed guest starring character may be recurring since she is tipped off about something wrong with the inventory at the Department of Justice where she works “upstairs” as a high ranking official. Is it the weapons we saw in Soledad’s possession in episode one? Missing drugs? Missing government funds, or perhaps all of the above as we get a quick glimpse of when her assistant is viewing the accounting records? Regardless, we will soon find out enough. One thing there is not doubt about, Dana Delany is always a joy to watch!

Mayans MC S5x02 Cole threatens Angel and his family

The final scenes of episode two are what set up the remaining episodes and will finally bring the epic saga to an end. Angel gets a visit from Cole (Branton Box), who threatens the family and, in turn, makes Angel think twice about trusting his brother. Somehow all the puzzle pieces finally come together to form one big reveal. With the threat of Ez’s past as an informant hanging in the balance, war with SOA, and the warehouse fire still a mystery, I have no doubt it will be a blood-soaked season for sure. Enjoy the rest of the episodes. I know I surely will.
