    Welcome back Treadstone lovers!

Treadstone‘s  action-packed season one, episode ten  “The Cicada Covenant” was written by Tim Kring and Dave Kalstein, and directed by Jeremy Webb.

In the Final First Season Episode, It’s All in the Cicada Family!

In this final episode of the first season, Soyun (played by Hyo-Joo Han) is finally reunited with her husband, only to find out her son has been sent off to the North Korean version of the Cicada School.

Doug McKenna (played by Brian J. Smith) has taken over a Cicada mission with the objective of assassinating an innocent tribal leader, Padre Vicuna (played by Edgar Duran), who has the audacity of standing in the way of progress.

Doug is caught between his drive to protect this innocent man and concern over what will happen to his wife Samantha (played by Tess Haubrich ) who is managing the Cicada handlers back home, at risk of discovering their deception if the Padre is not killed on schedule.

Treadstone S1x10 Tara is activated as a Cicada
Tara is activated as a Cicada

Finally, the Treadstone multiple subplots converge where we find out that Tara Coleman (played by Tracy Ifeachor) turns out to be a Cicada!

Now Cicada activated, we suddenly find that she is activated to kill the very man who killed her friends, the evil Stiletto Six ICBM broker Yuri Leniov (played by Merab Nindze).

Treadstone S1x10 Ellen Becker activates Tara
    Ellen Becker activates Tara

Tara’s activation is done with CIA Deputy Director Ellen Becker’s supervision (played by Michelle Forbes), and while it momentarily seems now she is more involved in the Cicada problem than she perhaps has seemed in previous episodes.

There is still a sense that her superior, Dan Levine (played by Michael Gaston), is driving this fiasco, and it is in this episode that Becker’s trusted agent Matt Edwards (played by Omar Metwally) finds his life in danger.

As all these parts and players converge in the final episode of the first season, we also have Old Petra (played by Gabrielle Scharnitzky) on her way to reunite with the now-old J Randolph Bentley (young Bentley played by Jeremy Irvine; young Petra played by Emilia Schüle).

Stephen Haynes is Alive! Stephen Haynes is Dead!

Treadstone S1x08 Haynes is captured and believed to have been killed
Haynes is captured and believed to have been killed

    I knew it!

Haynes (played by Patrick Fugit) is alive! – until he is put down later in the episode. I confess I am sad how this subplot ends.

It was my hope that Haynes would have been spared, but I am sorry that his death was faked in the previous episode “The McKenna Erasure” merely so that he could be reprogrammed as a hunting/killing drone again.

Treadstone S1x10 Haynes strapped in for a nightmare
Haynes strapped in for a nightmare

This episode opens with us observing Haynes strapped to a chair, dotted all over with bio-sensors. In Clockwork Orange-style, his eyes are wide open to a series of words and images that are certainly meant to re-indoctrinate him to become again a weapon wielded by the Cicada program.

And sadly, his re-programming is meant to condition him to execute CIA Agent Matt Edwards, who had been his help up to the time of Haynes’ capture.

Tara Awakens to her Cicada Identity!

Treadstone S1x10 Tara flashes back that her life is Cicada induced
Tara flashes back that her life is Cicada induced

Tara suddenly recognizes that her life as she knows it is actually just a Cicada cover story, but she is likewise aware that this means the life she knows is likely a false narrative. It is possible, then that her sister may not be dead like she had been led to believe.

Luckily, she was activated in the presence of Old Petra, who is able to help her be aware of what is happening to her. She gave her helpful information to assist her on her way to meet her target.

In fact, because the target is Yuri Leniov, Petra is further inspired to supply Tara with a small arsenal of weaponry. And Petra, seeing that the Cicada program has been activated by someone, finds it necessary to go on a little mission of her own, to see her old friend J Randolph Bentley again. In spite of all the spy/counterspy espionage they had to weed through back in the day, it seems they did find a bond of trust with each other. Must be love!

    Treadstone S1x10 Tara takes aim
    Tara takes aim

After Tara tries, and fails, to take out Leniov, she is quickly dispatched to help her friend, CIA agent Matt Edwards, who requires her aid at the very moment she finds him in Amsterdam. He is waist-deep in a canal, in hand-to-hand combat with Cicada Stephen Haynes (whose real name is Jacob Decker, Matt had just found out).

While Haynes was believed to be dead, he was brainwashed in Treadstone fashion, this time to kill Edwards.

    Treadstone S1x10 Edwards faces death
    Edwards faces death

Then came the moment Haynes had the upper hand, pushing Matt down into the canal waters.

But for one brief moment Edwards, gasping for breath as Haynes attempts to drown him, he calls out Hayne’s real name.

“Jacob!” he yells out! Just then Haynes suddenly pauses, stunned to hear his real name again.

Treadstone S1x10 Becker sends Tara to save Edwards against Levin's orders
Ellen Becker sends Tara to save Edwards against Levin’s orders

It is just enough time for Tara to take aim and shoot Haynes dead, saving Edwards.

And who was responsible for dispatching Tara to the aid of Edwards?

You guessed it, none other than Ellen Becker. Who, by the way, is none too happy that Levin attempted to use a Cicada to kill her friend and ally.

    “Padre perdóname, soy una cigarra!”

Treadstone S1x10 Doug has to make a decision
Doug has to make a decision

Doug is in a jungle in Colombia, attempting to fulfill the mission of another Cicada that Doug has killed. The need to keep the mission going is so that he can continue the ruse.

The problem, however, is that Doug has no desire to murder the mark, who happens to be a padre to the people, and who is set to give a speech that will surely protect his people and their land from the wheels of progress (he stands in the way of a company that desires to mine a “rare earth metal” which apparently runs in a vein right under the village).

Treadstone S1x10 Doug fakes Padres death
    Doug fakes Padres death

It all works out, of course. Doug pulls the same trick he used before with the Cicada whose life he assumed. He takes a picture of the Padre with blood on his face, lying awkwardly on the ground, looking quite dead, and sends it in as a proof of death. For Doug’s trouble of saving his life and taking a knife to the side, the Pastor offers some stitches and some gentle advice.

“The drama of your dreamworld,” Padre observes, “is so seductive.”

“I want to wake up,” replies Doug.

Which makes the audience contemplate an important truth: the Cicada, in order to become a useful killer puppet to a puppet master, is a person who must endure an uncomfortable and thick ooze of false narratives every day of his/her life.

    1. Untrue stories of a sister’s death, like Tara.

    2. Stories of different identities and different names, like Stephen Haynes.

    3. Stories of allegiances and enemies, like J Randolph Bentley, whose mind has been twisted by two different countries.

The only stories that prove to have a precious vein of truth in them are:

    A. The story of Doug and Samantha, where love and marriage has redeemed a Cicada/handler relationship in order for truth to finally shine through, and

    B. The story of Soyun, who has a husband and a son, and her devotion to them is a voice calling to her louder than the Cicada call.

Treadstone S1x10 Soyun will have to fight to save her family
Soyun will have to fight to save her family

We are sad that Haynes died in a state of Cicada enslavement, and we hope that Tara has an opportunity to learn her truth. Likewise, we want Ellen Becker to learn who has been authorizing all the Cicada activities.

That person (or persons) would be the true enemy. Certainly, Senator Wray (played by Tim Ahern) confesses (in a phone call to the Russian Yuri Leniov) that much of this activity was unsanctioned.

Treadstone S1x10 Nira Patel dispatches Levin
    Nira Patel dispatches Levin

But at the close of this episode, Ellen is called into a meeting with the Senator after Dan Levin is dispatched by a Cicada that we thought we had lost track of, Nira Patel (Shruti Haasan) in China.

So come next season we are sure to find out more about what the Senator knows.

And we are bound to get to meet present-day J Randolph Bentley, too!

    Looking Ahead…

I am very enthusiastic for the next season of Treadstone, and here are some questions I can’t wait to see answered:

    I. Levin is killed by the Indian Cicada assassin Nira Patel. Which means, while we do not know why he was eliminated exactly, we do know that the person behind the Cidada program ordered his elimination.

II. We still do not know who is behind the unsanctioned awakening for the Cicadas.

III. We still do not know the reason why this mind-bending program is still operating at all?

Treadstone S1x10 What does the Senator want with Ellen now that Levin has been dispatched?
What does the Senator want with Ellen with Levin dispatched?

And finally, What does Senator Wray want with Ellen now that Levin has been assassinated? Since we know that he has connections to Leniov (who did not successfully sell his Stiletto Six), and Leniov managed to escape Tara, he is still on the loose and able to create international incidents.

Stiletto Six may be off the market, but there are black market pharmaceutical drug rings and precious metal mine acquisitions still in play, so there are plenty of vices still to explore!

Treadstone moved towards an exciting season one finale with the ninth episode named “The Seoul Aslylum” that sets the stage for the viewers who have been on the edge of their seats all season to learn more about the Cicada sleeper assassins programs by a nefarious source for suspect objectives!

“The Seoul Asylum” was written by Tim Kring, Dave Kalstein, and Tyler Hisel , and directed by the awesome Salli Richardson-Whitfield.

Treadstone, a superb series, was created by Tim Kring, that has turned out to be an excellent action science fiction thriller that is brought to our screens by NBC Universal Content Productions!

Treadstone has more than exceeded viewer expectations, successfully dovetailing the movies that established the world of Jason Bourne, which featured characters who were programed to be assassins.

Treadstone S1x09 Tara is head at gun point by Petra!
Tara is head at gun point by old Petra!

In Treadstone, as seen on USA Network, several parts of the story arc threads that had remained a mystery are revealed in “The Seoul Asylum” sending reverberations by the series creators to the delight of the viewing audience!

Tara wants Petra to talk about what the hell is going on with the Stiletto Six ICBM?

Tara is apparently willing to share everything with Petra about her search for the Stiletto Six that included the death of her friend Meghan (Racheal Ofori) at the hands of Yuri Leniov’s (Merab Ninidze) present day gang of Marxist malcontents.

Treadstone S1x09 Old Petra shows Tara the Stiletto Six ICBM!
Old Petra shows Tara the Stiletto Six ICBM!

Petra returns the compliment by taking Tara into the missile silo complex itself located below the barn on her farm to witness the missile first hand that has been troubling her for many years.

Tara’s is more than disturbed to learn that the nuclear warheads have been taken by Yuri for his plans to sell them to the highest bidder!

We segue to Washington where we find Doug (Brian Jacob Smith) being trained by Samantha (Tess Haubrich) to assume the life of Vincent (Martin Goeres) whom was sent to kill Doug and Doctor Sachs (Alan McKenna) whose house was wired with explosives.

Fortunately, Doug turned the tables on the Cicada assassin and will now go dark assuming Vincent’s life and missions.

Doug shaves his head for his and Samanthas plan

Samantha gives Doug a bottle of anti Cicada medicine after he shaves his head to look like Vincent . In this way Doug will be able stay in control of himself effectively fighting the Cicada brainwashing.

Samantha contacts Cicada headquarters who send Leo Biller (Paul Thornley) an agent that Doug left alive in “The Paradox Andropov”. Samantha goes with Biller rather reluctantly. The question we must ask is will Doug ever see Samantha again?

Doug gets a text message in Vincent’s apartment that orders him to kill a Hispanic man named Padre Vicuna (Edgar Duran) in Colombia. Doug prepares to follow instructions and determine why Padre has been ordered to be killed?

    TREADSTONE -- "The Seoul As
Young Bentley and Petra plan to trick young Yuri!

The action moves to Budapest Hungary where we find Bentley and young Petra (Emilia Schüle) as they prepare to meet with young  Yuri (Julian Kostov) in order to trick him.

Young Petra kisses Yuri as part of the cover story

Young Petra and Bentley meet young Yuri at a hotel. Petra kisses Yuri as a cover action while Bentley remains in his pretend brainwashed characterization. Evil Yuri demands that young Petra physically beat Bentley to test his programming.

Yuri takes Bentley away to the KGB house of horrors while Petra tries to lay low. Instead, Petra is captured by armed KGB operatives where Petra finds the man named Kohler (Jaime Parker) who killed Ferguson (Tom Mothersdale) and ordered Bentley when he was brainwashed to bring Petra in. In a surprise development, Kohler demands that Petra tell him everything she knows about the Cicada program!

Next we find Bentley in a prison in Bucharest, Hungary where we learn that the vile Dr. Meisner (Martin Umbach) has survived Bentley’s attack on him in the opening episode “The Cicada Protocol”. Naturally, our hero Bentley has been drugged.

Bentley is locked up with his old pal Matheson informing him that he is there to save him from evil Doctor Meisner. Unfortunately, Matheson appears to be too far gone, instead alerting the guards, who beat Bentley mercilessly.

Bentley wakes up after his beating only to find that Dr. Meisner orders one of them must kill the other! Meisner puts a pistol and a single bullet on a table. Matheson attacks Bentley! Bentley gets the upper hand, but keeps trying to get through to brainwashed Matheson, finally succeeding. Matheson and Bentley then escape from the prison!

Edwards call a former Interpol ally Marten Van Room (Jan Hammenecker) in Amsterdam telling him that that the CIA is operating a world-wide criminal syndicate. Edwards leaves for Amsterdam to pass on the intelligence. This is where we get the bad news Treadstone’rs!

Cicada ringleader Dan Levine has been listening in on Edwards! Levine meets with Ellen Becker (Michelle Forbes) providing her with all the intel on the Cicada program. Levine begs Becker to stop her resistance to the program and join him in his mission or he will blackmail Ellen! Our Ellen Becker realizes has no choice but comply!

    Ready for another Treadstone Trek?

The McKenna Erasure” written by Tim Kring and Tyler Hisel, and directed by Salli Richardson-Whitfield, we get to take a ride on the transformational journeys of several heroes caught up in the mystery behind USA Network‘s  Treadstone.

In this episode of the Jason Bourne saga/black ops thriller Treadstone, Doug McKenna (played by Brian J Smith) and Samantha (played by Tess Haubrich) take a ride to a new home…. And a new identity . Soyun of North Korea (played by Hyo-Joo Han), dazzles in a blue dress while she collects intel and takes on Russians and North Koreans.

Journalist Tara (Tracy Ifaechor) is hot on the trail to connect with the Stiletto Six broker Yuri Leniov (played by Merab Ninidze). Finally, a road trip ends with a bang for CIA agent Matt Edwards (played by Omar Metwaly) and Stephen Haynes (played by Patrick Fugit), when several SUVs chock full of Farm Boys catch up with our two favorite fugitives and force feed a bullet to Haynes.

    The McKenna Erasure:

Doug Takes a Ride to the Other Side

Treadstone S1x08 Doug survives the explosion
    Doug survives the explosion

The episode begins with Doug in the house that exploded on him, and on us, in the final cliffhanging scene of the last episode The Paradox Andropov.

But while the home owners were hurt and the kitchen is a mess, Doug survived the blast, and again we get to see the happily married operatives Doug and Sam get busy making killer moves on yet another assassin responsible for the blasted interior. He was there to take out homeowner Marcus Sachs .

Treadstone S1x08 Doug surveys the explosion damage with the target
Doug surveys the explosion damage with the target

(Note: Doug does not know this man, nor why this man is a target of the Cicada-managing agents.  He only learned that this man was a target, just like him, when he eavesdropped on the operatives).

Doug was there to prevent the kill. Dr. Sachs and his wife did not make it out alive. That is sad. But, in a good way, neither does Doug.

Treadstone S1x08 Doug fights for his life
    Doug fights for his life

In high action style, Doug takes on the house-blastin’ assassin “mano y mano” (with crucial help from the “womano” Samantha) in a tremendous fight scene that includes fists, knives, and guns!

Doug is able to successfully lay the assassin down for his eternal nap after a knock down drag out fight sequence that was extremely realist.

Treadstone S1x08 Doug and Samantha fake his death to CIA Cicada HQ
Doug and Samantha fake his death to CIA Cicada HQ

Doug then hits on a bold idea: use the present circumstances to throw off the Cicada program team who are still seeking to exterminate him. He has Samantha take his picture as “Dead Doug” with the assassin’s mobile phone.

Together Doug and Samantha send that image (along with the image of poor homeowners Marcus Sachs and wife) to the people who gave the kill order. They receive the “confirmed” kills, send back orders to destroy Doug’s body, and Doug and Samantha set about leaving with the body of the Assassin, who will now get to play the role of Dead Doug.

Treadstone S1x08 Doug and Samantha prepare for action
Doug and Samantha prepare for action

Doug and Samantha next travel to Assassin’s house with Doug assuming the role of the dead Cicada killer. This is replete with Kenn of WormholeRiders asking, and  Brian Jacob Smith admitting that he actually shaved his head for the episode on Twitter to resemble the dead CIA agent!

    Their ultimate goal?

For Samantha and Doug able to somehow be able to resume a normal life sometime in the future. Clever plan!

    Soyun Hits the Town

Soyun infiltrates the VIP room to get revenge

Catching the eye of Russian Stiletto Six broker Yuri Leniov, who is in town to meet with the prospective North Korean buyers in the back room of a night club, it is easy for Soyun to do her stuff in her cute sparkly blue dress.

It gets Soyun close enough to flirt with him…and to bug him!

Now she can overhear the conversation Yuri has with her wicked Cicada handler Colonel Shin (played by Lee Jong-hyeok).

Treadstone S1x08 Soyun kicks arse and takes names to make good her escape
Soyun kicks arse and takes names to make good her escape

To better understand what the hell is going on with her and her husband Dae, Soyun has planted a listening device on her target and overhears him say “That family will never know just how useful they were,”

After Soyun overhears him say that, I guess he will never know how wrong he was to underestimate Soyun. Hell hath no fury as a Soyun scorned when we witness Soyun kicking arse in the night club in a fight scene worthy of Soyun being one of the Marvel Avengers in Endgame!

Daytripper Tara Goes Sight Seeing in Moscow

Treadstone S1x08 Tara hunts for the Stiletto Six ICBM
Tara hunts for the Stiletto Six ICBM

Tara leaves the devastation she experienced in Berlin, where her best friend was shot in the head in front of her, to pursue Stiletto Six, and she knows a guy in Moscow who is just the man to help her. Nolan Lavelle is his name (played by Set Sjöstrand). He is a broker in intelligence, so he is able to fill her in on the connection between Treadstone, Stiletto Six, Blackbriar (the black ops program that had failed with the help of Jason Bourne), and his knowledge about what it all means.

Nolan explains that all these things are wrapped up in a new “human performance and enhancement, I am talking about the next wave of military operations.” To help Tara he sets his team to work on gathering intel on Yuri Leniov, and they discover quickly that Yuri indeed has a link to Stiletto Six that goes back a few decades… along with a program called Cicada.

    Bingo!

Treadstone S1x08 Tara finds the connection to General Kwon
Tara finds the connection to General Kwon

“That’s what General Kwon (played by Tzi Ma) mentioned!”

Tara gasps, and this puts two more puzzle pieces together in her head. “He said they were waking the Cicadas!” Tara recalls.

Tara is still in the dark about what exactly a Cicada is, but it is worth observing that the Cicadas themselves are also in the dark about who they are.

But it is helpful intel for Tara that she now has a connection between Yuri and Kwon on two fronts:

Treadstone S1x08 Tara tracks down Old Petra
    Tara tracks down Old Petra

The ICBM missile sale, and she now has more  knowledge of the Cicada program in both North Korea and agents of the former Soviet Union.

This puts Tara hot on the trail…. wait fot it!

To meet with Old Petra in a stunning development at the end of the episode!

Two CIA Guys on the Lam

Home office is on the hunt for Farm Boy Matt Edwards and rogue Cicada Stephen Haynes. Together they have formed a trust-centered partnership, knowing that something sinister is behind the very existence of Cicada Haynes, and that the something sinister begins with the letters C.I.A.

Because of this, they both know Haynes’ destiny is spelled D-E-A-D, and the orders of Director Dan Levine (played by Michael Gaston) will be to shoot Haynes on sight, and that Edwards’ superior Ellen Becker (played by Michelle Forbes) will be pressed to comply.

Treadstone S1x08 Matt Edwards surrenders after Haynes is killed
Matt Edwards surrenders after Haynes is killed

The two are on the run, but they finally settle on a plan to give up in such a way to come in peacefully, and hopefully, alive. Once Edwards and Haynes have succeeded to surrender, and their wrists secured in zip ties, the camera zooms in on Edwards’ face, to see the painful reaction he feels as we hear the sound of a single gunshot.

We are left to assume that Haynes had seen this coming, that he was resigned to his impending death, that he had made his peace with a last look at his daughter. We are left to assume that the bullet found its way into Haynes’ brain pan, and he found his way to the hereafter.

We are left to assume it, anyway…

    The Questions for the Week

This week’s questions are fairly well laid out in the dialogue, and Matt Edwards confronts Ellen Becker when he is brought in for questioning.

    1. “Who woke up Haynes?”

    2. “Why did he kill an ex whistle blower in that store?”

    3. “Who is the the agency woman in that photo I sent you?” Carol Jane Devers (played by Kerry Godliman), the person Haynes identified as being his handler.

    4. What’s her connection to all of this?

The fourth question gets a partial answer this week. Edwards does a little research on his own time and finds out Carol Jane Devers was involved in a organization called Fair Trade Fellows.

Guess who else is on the board of advisors?

    Why, Yuri is, that’s who!

Guess who else? Senator Eamon Wray.

    Small world, isn’t it?

But this little homework exercise has got Edwards under the microscope of his boss’ supervisor Dan Levine. Something tells me that Dan is no Dudley Do-Right.

    Final Thoughts

Treadstone S1x08 Soyun escapes to the American Embassy
Soyun escapes to the American Embassy

Soyun successfully escapes from the night club alive, ending up safe in an American embassy by the end of this episode.

Tara is able to confirm to Edwards in a phone call that Yuri was behind the murder of her friend in Berlin, and that she is on her way to find the only remaining former agent of the KGB program called Cicada. Her name is Sonya Andropov, but we know her as Petra…

And we also know that Dan Levine is listening.

Treadstone is moving to an exciting season one finale in “The Paradox Andropov”, an episode written by Marc Bernardin, Dave Kalstein, and Tyler Hisel , drirected by Wayne Yip.

The series, created by Tim Kring, is an excellent action science fiction thriller that is brought to our screens by NBC Universal Content Productions that has successfully dovetailed the world of Jason Bourne, which featured character who were programed to be assassins.

In Treadstone  as seen on USA Network several parts of the story arc threads remain a mystery that “The Paradox Andropov” delineates as the “Cicada” located around the world. Each chacter has woken up to complete their missions either willingly, or in the case of several characters unwillingly.

Treadstone S1x07 Old Petra wants answers
    Old Petra wants answers

All the Cicada agents, except one (old Petra) who appears to know much more than all the others, appear to be trying to become free of their handlers who have used brutal, often murderous methods to attempted to maintain control over their agents without success in virtually every single instance!

Treadstone S1x06 Ellen Becker and Dan Levine plan next moves
Ellen Becker and Dan Levine plan next moves

Treadstone became complicated when CIA Operative Ellen Becker (Michelle Forbes) loses control of four agents facing great anger from her boss Dan Levine (Michael Gaston) as discussed below.

In fact, all of the Cicada’s around the world have gone rogue in a state of anarchy that their evil handlers must deal with before the conclusion of season one.

The In the previous episode, “The Hades Awakening“, several threads were left open by factors that will be revealed in “The Paradox Andropov”, specifically, the threads needing answers are about:

    1. A Big Pharma company is synthesizing illegal drugs. How does this fit in with the Cicada’s? Are these drugs used to control them?

    2. A vacationing trust fund guy was killed by Nira Patel (Shruti Haasan) in India in episode three, The Berlin Proposal remains a mystery.

    3. Doug (Brian J. Smith) and Samantha (Tess Haubrich) are two agents about to be cleaned up by the CIA. This development will hopefully be addressed in “The McKenna Erasure” subsequent to a cliffhanger in “The Paradox Andropov”.

    4. Stiletto Six: Tara (Tracy Ifeachor) and Sebastian (Eric Kofi-Abrefa) are on the hunt for the broker Yuri Leniov (Julian Kostov) who can make this deal happen. This question is addressed in “The Paradox Andropov” when old Petra  (Gabrielle Scharnitzky) meets with old Leninov (Merab Ninidze) who tells Petra she is no longer needed. Petra does not like being dismissed after many decades of loyal service.

    5. Senator Eamon Wray (Tim Ahern) who we were introduced to him in episode four, The Kentucky Contract successfully got a Russian Trade Agreement passed. Further, it got quickly approved by the Kremlin, right after North Korea’s General Kwon (Tzi Ma) got assassinated. This came up in a conversation between CIA agents Ellen Becker (Michelle Forbes) and Dan Levine (Michael Gaston). Becker is keenly interested in this set of facts, and how it may relate to Stiletto Six. Levine shows interests as well. Levin orders Becker to tell Edwards to kill Haynes.

    6. Finally how do John Randolf Bentley (Jeremy Irvine) and young Petra (Emilia Schüle) fit in? What will Soyun (Hyo-Joo Han) do when she meets her handler in a in a nightclub that she sneaked into? And what is Haynes (Patrick Fugit) and Matt Edwards (Omar Metwally) plan now that they have gone rogue from the CIA?

Treadstone S1x07 The Stiletto Six ICBM
    The enigmatic Stiletto Six ICBM

The episode opens with the previous Treadstone scenes from “The Hades Awakening” and earlier episodes.

After reviewing the Stiletto Six ICBM with old Petra, we are reminded of Tara and Sebastian escaping the prison camp.

The final previous episodic review is when Soyun was being blackmailed by her handler to follow orders to ensure that her family remains safe.

Treadstone S1x06 Soyun hides in the back of an SUV
Soyun hides in the back of an SUV

Soyun, who loves her family, instead had followed her evil handler secretly outside of her home and quietly gets into the back of one of their Sport Utility Vehicles.

It is obvious that Soyun plans to track him down where ever he goes to ultimately  seek revenge for stealing her beloved family.

Treadstone S1x07 Doug races home to make sure everthing is okay
Doug races home to make sure everything is okay

We find Doug racing home to Samantha in Ashland Kentucky after learning that he and his wife Samantha are to be “cleaned up” by the CIA.

Doug rushes into his home thinking Samantha may already have been killed by the CIA agents subsequent to when he accidentally overhead on one of their communication devices when he was ambushed by the agents at his former friends home.

Samantha has packed their bags and cut her hair in order to go undercover. Both decide to leave as soon as possible before they are “cleaned up” by the CIA.

Treadstone S1x07 Young Petra holds Benley at gunpoint
Young Petra holds Benley at gunpoint

Next we are in Budapest Hungary with Bentley in the 1970’s. Bentley wakes up to find himself held under gunpoint by young Petra. As Bentley confronts Petra about what she has done to him, suddenly Petra levels her gun on a KGB agent and kills him. Petra says they must escape and she has really been his ally from the beginning.

Is Petra actually Bentley’s Treadstone handler for the CIA?

Bentley decides to trust Petra. The two lovers make their way to an abandoned KGB safe house to work on their next plan of action.

Treadstone S1x07 Bentley kills CIA agent Wilson
    Bentley kills CIA agent Wilson

Bentley goes for a walk outside the safe house only to find that a known CIA agent Pete Wilson (Joe Corrigall) has been shadowing him.

Bentley confronts Wilson who tries to shoot Bentley. Bentley gets lucky and the bullet misses allowing him to grab the gun and kill Wilson.

Bentley returns to the safe house to share with Petra what has just transpired. Petra then reveals to Bentley that Dr Meisner (Martin Umbach) survived Bentley’s attack in the KGB laboratory and the good doctor is training other agents.

Treadstone S1x07 Petra and Bentley make love
    Petra and Bentley make love

Petra says they must find young Yuri who will be able to help them figure it all out.

This leads one to believe the entire Cicada operation is actually under CIA control behind enemy lines in the Soviet Union in the 1970’s.

Petra and Bentley make passionate love before they head out to find Yuri.

Treadstone S1x07 Old Petra on Mykonos
    Old Petra on Mykonos

We move to the present day with older Petra having tracked down older Yuri on the Greek island of Mykonos. Petra is keeping an eye older Yuri’s luxurious yacht. Petra goes with Yuri to his opulent mansion on the island where she observes Yuri meeting with the corrupt Senator Eamon Wray.

One wonders why the Senator is meeting with a Russian KGB agent?

Viewers many recall that Senator Wray has been under CIA observation for his prying into the Treadstone operations that the Senator had been lead to believe by Becker that all Cicada operations had been terminated.

Petra surprises Yuri in the mansion and confronts him. Petra accuses Yuri of being a traitor. Yuri reveals that he has been expecting her and summons his security guards.

Older Yuri then tells old Petra that her mission is complete and she will be allowed to go home and be let go if she forgets everything. Petra agrees to obtain her freedom. However this Editor is not so convinced that Petra, who still has allies in Moscow, will forget Yuri secretly meeting with the enemy.

Treadstone S1x06 Soyun is ordered to follow instructions
Soyun is ordered to follow instructions

We move to our lovely young Cicada Soyun (one of our favorite characters) who had hidden in the trunk of vehicle to track down her handler subsequent to being threatened by him.

When they arrive at the destination, Soyun gets out and wonders why her handler is in Seoul, South Korea?

Is he a traitor to their own country or simply corrupt?

Treadstone S1x07 Soyun in the beautiful blue dress in the nightclub
Soyun in the beautiful blue dress in the nightclub

Soyun follows the handler discretely discovering that he frequents a high end exclusive night club in Seoul.

Soyun carefully plans out how she will gain access to the nightclub in order to exact her revenge.

Soyun pick pockets a wallet from a rich patron and acquires a beautiful blue sparkly dress at a local salon.

Next we find Tara, Sebastian, and her friend Meghan (Racheal Ofori) at Sebastian’s place in a penthouse. Tara and Sebastian give in to their passions as former lovers and make love.

    Treadstone S1x07 Tara is ambushed
    Tara is ambushed!

Subsequent to the love making, Tara tells Sebastian it was a last fling and she must concentrate on finding out about Yuri and the details of the Stiletto Six ICBM.

On the way to track down Yuri, Tara is ambushed on the street in their car by masked gunmen and are taken hostage.

The bad guys demand the money Tara promised for the Stiletto Six access codes. Tara stops playing games and transfers the money to get the codes and stay alive.

Treadstone S1x07 Tara and her friends are taken hostage
Tara and her friends are taken hostage

Tara hesitates and her friend Meghan is shot in the head. Tara transfers the Stiletto Six money for the codes.

Tara and Sebastian are then hooded and dumped in an ally.

Tara reaffirms to Sebastian that its over between them and she is determined to track down the leads to Stiletto Six.

Tara contacts an agent, apparently in Moscow, that she needs information about Stiletto Six using her knowledge of Treadstone as leverage. The contact tells Tara to contact him shen she arraives in Moscow.

Treadstone S1x07 The VIP dorrman says the VIP room is filled with old guys
The VIP doorman says the VIP room is filled with old guys

Back to Soyun who has convinced the VIP section nightclub doorman that she is meeting a business man and his group inside.

Using her feminine skills, Soyun tells the staff inside to let her into the private suites where her “clients” are waiting.

The inner security guard says the VIP suite is it’s only filled with “boring old rich guys”.

Treadstone S1x07 Soyun says come and rescue me when you get a break
Soyun says come and rescue me when you get a break

Soyun tells the guard she has “business” inside, but to come and “rescue me when you get a break” her later!

The inner doorman agrees and Soyun is observed entering the private suite as we wonder what she plans to do to her handler?

We can only surmise that he will either cooperate or perish since he is a traitor to North Korea operating in South Korea!

The final scenes. Doug informs Samantha that he has a lead to follow up on; his next target to find out what the hell is going on with Treadstone.

Treadstone S1x07 Doug is warned by Samantha as they arrive at the targets home
Doug is warned by Samantha as they arrive at the targets home

Samantha warns Doug they will be hunted down by the CIA for trying to escape the CIA Treadstone project.

Doug says that he understands, stating as soon as he gets some information from his next target who lives in Arlington, Virginia, that they will disappear.

Can it really be this easy for Doug and Samantha to escape the CIA? Not very likely.

Treadstone S1x07 Samantha runs to see if Doug survived
Samantha runs to see if Doug survived

They arrive at the targets large fine home in Arlington.

Doug approaches the house, rings the doorbell and enters the home.

    Suddenly the house explodes!

A horrified Samantha watches in horror running from the car wondering if her husband has been blown to smithereens!?

“The Hades Awakening” was written by Tim Kring, Dave Kalstein  and Brandon Guercio and directed by  Wayne Yip.

In “The Hades Awkening we get to see several Cicadas awakened and ignited in their quest for answers in true Jason Bourne style, in this week’s exciting episode of  USA Network‘s  Treadstone.

This week, Doug McKenna (played by Brian J Smith) has a chance to learn a thing or two from his handlers, and we get to see him perform a nifty McGyver trick.

We catch up with Soyun of North Korea (played by Hyo-Joo Han), who recovers from her gun shot to the gut, only to return home and experience a proverbial shot to the heart: her family is gone and she has another service to perform for her handlers.

Treadstone S1x06 Bentley on LSD relives past memories as a KGB assasin
Bentley on LSD relives past memories as a KGB assasin

CIA agent Matt Edwards (played by Omar Metwaly), who has successfully joined Stephen Haynes (played by Patrick Fugit) in his quest to see his daughter, finds the quest takes a more complicated Treadstone turn.

Finally, John Randolph Bentley (played by Jeremy Irvine) takes a psychedelic tour of his mind, and discovers memories of being captured by the KGB.

Moreover, it was young Petra’s (played by Emilia Schüle) job to turn him into a ruthless killing machine. Petra is the one, it turns out, who called it his “true purpose.”

    The Hades Awakening:

    Dirtbike Doug

Treadstone S1x06 Doug and Mike reunite before the Special Forces come to kill Doug
Doug and Mike reunite before Special Forces come to kill Doug

The episode begins with Doug riding a dirt bike as he goes to former oil rig buddy Mike’s trailer home (played by Ian Davies). He wants to learn why Mike was at the pharma factory and what may come next. Mike has already snitched on Doug to the police, however, so the conversation was cut short when a handful of Special Forces law enforcement officers (also on dirt bikes) descend upon the trailer home right after Doug arrives. But this setback for Doug turns into a great opportunity for us: We finally get to watch Doug access that clever Jason Bourne-like ingenuity as he tracks down who it is behind his life as a Cicada.

Treadstone S1x06 Mike tipped off the Special Forces to kill Doug
Mike tipped off the Special Forces to kill Doug

It turns out that the Special Forces dirt bike police are already known to Doug: they were his team that helped take down the pill factory, obviously dirty cops doing mercenary work for Treadstone agents. The Treadstone agents catch up soon after the cops. Treadstone wants to know what happened to their guy who they sent to “expire” Defective Doug in episode three — the guy who Doug’s wife, Samantha (played by Tess Haubrich), shot and killed in their living room).

But Doug does not seem so defective anymore.

Treadstone S1x06 Doug escapes the Special Forces police in an exciting motorcycle chase
Doug escapes Special Forces police in exciting motorcycle chase

Doug’s brief scuffle with the Treadstone agent leads to a chance for Doug to track the agent to his hotel. There he whips out a little McGyver-style ingenuity, turning a mini LED flashlight and a cell phone he lifted off some guy into a long-range laser listening device.

With it, he scans from window to window outside the hotel, locating the exact room of the Treadstone agents, and he eavesdrops on the conversation going on about him. Pretty cool!

Wounded Soyun heads to a local village to get help

Fortunately, Soyun’s gun shot to the gut happened not too far from a nearby village, and she is able to make it there before she collapses. The locals get her to the doctor in time.

Soyun is treated, gets the bullet extracted, and with pain meds in hand she is ship-shape enough to be on her way.

Her next stop? Home to find out if her family is still safe since she completed her awful assignment.

Treadstone S1x06 Soyun gets help at a local before heading home
Soyun gets help at a local village before heading home

A homecoming reunion was not meant to be. She finds the place empty of family, her handler is waiting for her instead.

He explains that her son is with his grandmother, and her husband is on an “assignment.” Reunion will have to wait until after another job is performed.

Treadstone S1x06 Soyun arrive home and gets new ordersThe handler leaves Soyun, but he does not leave her with any specific information about what her next assignment might be. Just a stern word of caution that she had better obey to protect her family.

    But wait! Not so fast!

Soyun stows herself away in one of the cars of her handler’s entourage as he leaves. Like Doug, Soyun has now switched her Cicada talents to tracking her North Korean branch of the Treadstone puppet masters!

    When the Smoke Clears

Treadstone S1x06 Edwards decides to help Haynes
    Edwards decides to help Haynes

Two episodes ago, in the Kentucky Contract, we left American Cicada assassin Stephen Haynes looking for his daughter, and CIA agent Matt Edwards promised to help him. This week we enjoy a wonderful chess-like maneuver in this game of undercover operatives.

The daddy-daughter reunion was really a ruse by Haynes to flush out his Treadstone handlers. Haynes knew they would try to overtake him at that location, and he simply beat them at their own game. Unfortunately, in his Cicada rage, he strangles his female handler to death. I guess we won’t be getting any information out of her.

Treadstone S1x06 Becker catches up on Cicada crisis unfolding with Edwards and Haynes
Becker catches up on Cicada crisis with Edwards and Haynes

Meanwhile back at CIA headquarters, Ellen Becker (played by Michelle Forbes) has a heart-to-heart with her superior Dan Levine (played by Michael Gaston), who tells her, in unvarnished terms, to have her guy Edwards kill Haynes.

Dutifully Becker does convey that message, but Edwards, who is able to assess the data surrounding Haynes during his time with him, is not inclined to follow that order.

Better to not kill off those who may be able to clear the air about what is going on, and Haynes is one of those people. He is the smoke that can help lead the way to the gun, and to the people pulling the trigger.

    A Mental Mess in Budapest

Treadstone S1x06 Bentley will torture his fellow agent Matheson
Bentley will torture his fellow agent Matheson

Last episode we left John Bentley embarking on a psychedelic trip. This episode we find ourselves along for the ride. His story begins in Krakow, Poland where he was caught by the cute red headed KGB operative, the younger version of Petra. She caught him off guard with a crack to the back of the head. From there on he was Petra’s toy.

With mind-altering drugs and torture, and lots of romantic interludes, she turned him into not merely a turncoat, but into a slave who had no memory of his former American allegiance, and even unable to recognize the people who knew him.

Treadstone S1x06 Bentley on LSD recalls his torturing his own friends under Petras control
Bentley on LSD recalls torturing hisfriend under Petra’s control

Which, by the way, made it gleefully easy for John to torture and kill his former brothers in arms including fellow agent Matheson (played by Oliver Walker). He gets to review these not-so-happy memories in flashback fashion while lying on the floor of an early 70’s, Eastern European opioid den.

With Katya (played by Maja Simonsen) looking over him and coaxing him through, the LSD trip has to be cut short when the den gets raided and, although John is experiencing the rolling shudder effect associated with his acid trip – he still seems to be fully able with deft precision to take out the KGB agents trying to apprehend him.

    Until Petra runs into him.

    With a car!

John is back on the KGB farm at this point, and probably with a cracked rib or two.

What Else We’ve Learned This Episode

Treadstone S1x04 Brian Jacob Smith as Doug McKenna
Doug learns things from The Kentucky Contract

This episode presents us with an interesting tidbit that will undoubtedly turn into a plot tie-in. In the conversation Doug overhears with his makeshift long-range listening device, he learns more about the “Patty Vernon situation.” Patty was the drug operation queen bee that Doug killed in episode five: The Bentley Lament.

Patty controlled a “hundred million dollar market share in bootlegged opioid pills” and Doug learns that “Lang pharmaceuticals wants to take it over and make it legal.” We also learn that they are putting together a team to “…get it all cleaned up. The cops, Doug, and Samantha.” Ellen Becker and Dan Levine will have their hands full!

I wonder what this may have to do with a dead North Korean general, a Russian ICBM, and a bunch of sleeper assassins that have been recently awakened?

    Threads to Track

    1. A Big Pharma company wants to get in on Peggy’s bootleg action. We look forward to knowing more about that company.

    2. Hey, let’s not forget about that vacationing trust fund guy killed by Nira Patel (played by Shruti Haasan) in Northern India (in episode three: The Berlin Proposal)

    3. Doug and Sam are about to be “cleaned up.” Uh-oh…

    4. Stiletto Six: the race is on for obtaining control of it. Tara (played by Tracy Ifeachor) and Sebastian (played by Eric Kofi-Abrefa) are on the hunt for the broker Yuri Leniov (played by Julian Kostov) who can make this deal happen, but we must wait until next episode to see where this goes.

    5. Senator Eamon Wray: We were briefly introduced to him in episode four: The Kentucky Contract. In that episode we learn the senator successfully got a Russian Trade Agreement passed – and further, it got quickly approved by the Kremlin – right after North Korea’s General Kwon got assassinated. This came up in a conversation between CIA agents Ellen Becker (played by Michelle Forbes) and Dan Levine (played by Michael Gaston). Becker is keenly interested in this set of facts, and how it may relate to Stiletto Six. Levine shows interests as well, but their discussion on this subject causes Levin to pivot it to another subject that keenly interests him: Edwards’ progress with Haynes. Now in this episode, Levin orders Becker to tell Edwards to kill Haynes.

    NOTES:

Treadstone S1x06 Ellen Becker and Dan Levine plan next moves
Ellen Becker and Dan Levine plan next moves as things unravel

Levine is obviously not as interested in bringing in Haynes for the sake of gathering intelligence about the unauthorized Cicada program as he is quashing the phenomenon. We also learned in “The Kentucky Contract” that Levin’s strength, according to Becker, is that Levine can protect them from Senate Intelligence Committee questions of their activity as they investigate who Becker and the possibility that Treadstone is still active.

Levine hired Becker to cover the Kwon situation, and Becker has expressed her concern that Levine knows more about the Kwon assassination and the Stiletto Six problem than he is letting on. Defy Levine, and there may be Senate Intelligence Committee consequences to pay. But there may be even more than that at stake with Levine in charge.

    My Hypothesis:

Treadstone S1x06 Young Petra seduces Bentley
Young Petra seduces Bentley to control him

Eamon Wray is on the Senate Intelligence Committee and (dare I say it?) he knows a thing or two about the not-dead-yet Treadstone program, and Levin is in the Senator’s back pocket (or vice-versa). I have another theory, too, but I dare not say it without some more information.

Whether I am right or not, all these Cicadas are pursuing truth, just like the First Generation Treadstone operative Jason Bourne. Finding answers, and unveiling the face of the Man Behind the Curtain, is the engine that drives the Treadstone story.

Treadstone S1x06 Emilia Schule as young Petra KGB mastermind
Emilia Schule as young Petra the KGB mastermind

This episode provided us some very satisfying moments in the pursuits that are being made by the Cicadas; Soyun, Doug McKenna, and Stephen Haynes. We also learn much more about John Bentley’s KGB conditioning by young Petra in the past.

However, we do not yet know where he is now, nor what he ultimately decided to do with the knowledge of his KGB conditioning subsequent to escaping from the CIA safe house in the 1970’s.

Maybe we will learn another interesting twist, now that 1973 Bentley ended up back in the arms of his lover, the young Petra?!

    Hello Treadstone lovers!

“The Bentley Lament” was written by Tim Kring and Patrick Aison, and directed by Brad Anderson, questions the ‘True Purpose’ of the Cicada in USA Network‘s fabulous new science fiction thriller action series Treadstone.

In this episode of the Jason Bourne saga/black ops thriller Treadstone, we follow Doug McKenna (played by Brian J Smith) through his first successful mission as a Cicada assassin, and we experience with him his reactions in the aftermath.

We also follow Soyun of North Korea (played by Hyo-Joo Han), who takes a perilous path across the Yalu River into China with a packet of top secret information in her hand, all without knowing precisely where she is going or who she is meeting.

Journalist Tara Coleman (played by Tracy Ifeachor) visits a friend in Ghana who she thinks can help her find and acquire the ICBM missile Stiletto Six.

Treadstone S1x05 Bentley thinks about his past
    Bentley thinks about his past

Finally, John Randolph Bentley (played by Jeremy Irvine) is told that he at one time declared, apparently with gusto, that he found his life as a violent operative of the KGB to be his true purpose.

Bentley receives this revelation in disbelief, with horror, and with no memory of having said it.

Which makes one wonder, what’s the point of having a “true purpose” if you don’t like it?

    play-sharp-fill

    The Bentley Lament:

Am I OK? Are You OK? Are We OK?

Treadstone S1x05 Doug prepares for combat
    Doug prepares for combat

The episode begins with us returning to where we left off with Doug as he prepares to fulfill his obligation of the Kentucky Contract. He takes out his target, a woman running an illegal prescription drug operation out of a Kentucky warehouse, with deft precision.

Later in the episode, the job completed and Doug back home, he sits on the porch of his house and recounts the experience to his wife.

Treadstone S1x05 Doug returns home after The Kentucky Contract
Doug returns home with lament after The Kentucky Contract

Doug laments that felt like he was someone else. “You people turned me into a monster,” he says. His self-loathing is laid bare. Samantha (play by Tess Haubrich) attempts to console him, and in the process we receive another snippet of information about Doug and who he really is: he is from Boston. Does this tidbit of information become important for future episodes? We wait to find out. Meanwhile, we are clear that Doug despises his “true purpose” as a Cicada.

Treadstone S1x05 The illicit drug factory job Doug turned down
The illicit drug factory job Doug turned down

Incidentally, while Doug was on the job taking out the pill factory queen bee, he runs into his oil rig buddy Mike (played by Ian Davies from Game of Thrones).

Now we know the job Mike had landed for himself, the job Mike had offered Doug to get in on the action two episodes ago. In this mission, Doug decides to leave Mike alive. Leaving Mike alive suggests that Doug might be more in control of his choices while he is in Cicada mode than we yet recognize. We will wait to see. Regardless, I am sure we will be hearing more from Mike soon.

When True Purposes Conflict with Each Other

    Treadstone S1x05 SoYun in China
    SoYun in China

SoYun has a perilous trip across a swift-moving river, then in the back of a smuggler’s truck, and then on foot, wandering alone in the hilly wilds somewhere in Eastern China.

SoYun, after an arduous journey, finally happens upon the contact that she was sent to meet.

The contact, however, is the Treadstone assassin Nira Patel (played by Shruti Haasan), who is there to take the Stiletto Six ICBM information packet. Unfortunately, Nira Patel has also been sent to kill SoYun.

Treadstone S1x05 SoYun gives Nira Patel the Stiletto Six ICBM manual
SoYun gives Nira Patel the Stiletto Six ICBM manual

In the same manner as we have witnessed with Doug, SoYun, and the other sleeper Cicadas, Patel receives her kill order in the form of a black and white picture of her target inside the Stiletto Six information packet.

Soyun is seen with a bold red circle around her face, a bold red triangle underneath the circle, and the GPS coordinates of her location at the bottom of the picture.

In other words, we seem to have a Treadstone operative going after a Treadstone operative?!?

Treadstone S1x05 SoYun fights for her life against Patel
SoYun fights for her life against Patel

Another thing that is interesting about Patel: We first met her in Episode three: The Berlin Proposal. There we meet her as she works waiting tables at a restaurant somewhere in Northern India, biding her time until orders come through via her mobile phone to take out a target.

The target that time happened to be a young man living off of his trust fund, blithely traveling exotic places on a quest to find himself, suddenly finding himself dead once Patel and her purse-sized poison spray caught up with him. One squirt and he was gone.

Is Patel a Cicada? It seems obvious she is a product of Treadstone, yet she is not presented to us as a sleeper. Like Petra in Russia, Patel has all the Treadstone programming that makes her an effective human weapon of destruction, but she seems to lack the programming that would put her mind under the sleeper Cicada spell. She is conscious of what she is doing, and moreover, she has no remorse about it.

Patel Seems to Embrace Her “True Purpose”

Treadstone S1x05 Nira Patel kicks SoYuns butt before shooting her
Nira Patel kicks SoYuns butt before shooting her

The same cannot be said for the sleeper Cicadas. They all seem to be entirely confused about who they are and regret what they are doing.

When it comes to combat, Patel also proves to be more than a match for SoYun. They duke it out in mixed martial arts style, but when the two wrestle over the gun, it is SoYun that gets shot. Patel walks away with the packet of information SoYun delivered.

We are left watching a wounded SoYun collapsing to the ground, despairing that the information she delivered turned out to be the top secret Stiletto Six data that her husband had in his possession. We wonder when her husband will perceive these papers were purloined? It certainly appears that SoYun was set up to be framed for it.

Tara Coleman (played by Tracy Ifeachor) has gone to Ghana to hunt down a past contact Sebastian, (played by Eric Kofi-Abrefa).

Sebastian is a gun runner and has knowledge of Stiletto Six and Yuri Leniov (played by Julian Kostov), the guy who is selling the missile on the black market.

Tara is hoping Sebastian can help her find the Stiletto Six ICBM so she can buy it in order to prove she has been correct about it all along.

Treadstone S1x05 Tara in line outside the prison
Tara in line outside the prison

It is unfortunate that Sebastian is in prison and is not really inclined to help her right away, being a bit offended that she looks him up only whenever he serves some utilitarian purpose for her. Journalism is Tara’s “true purpose,” which foils his romantic notions.

Putting his hurt feelings aside, however, Sebastian is also compromised in his capacity to help in another way since he is in prison.

Treadstone S1x05 Tara in the Ghana prison
    Tara inside the Ghana prison

Tara seems to be the kind of girl willing to do a favor for a favor, so she greases the wheels to have Sebastian shanked. He can be let out of prison for a trip to the hospital, after all.

Once out, Tara is ready to divert his ambulance to a helicopter out of Ghana, and she assures Sebastian on the way that she had ordered the attack on him to be superficial — he will be just fine. He seems happy with the explanation, and off they go to hunt for Stiletto Six, and Yuri.

    Russian SS19 Stiletto Six ICBM
    Russian SS19 Stiletto Six ICBM

In case you are wondering, The Stiletto Six ICBM program was a real Russian missile defense program back in the day. There were three variants of this missile, one deployed in 1975, that was designed to “carry up to six MIRVs.” And also in case you are wondering, MIRV stands for Multiple Independent Reentry Vehicle . Therefore, Stiletto Six is likely a missile with six payloads capable of hitting six separate targets at one time. That’s my guess, anyway. If you have a different thought about it I would love to know your theory in the comments below.

    On a “Trip” of Self-Discovery

Treadstone S1x05 Bentley thinks about what to do next
Bentley thinks about what to do next

No one can know their “true purpose” without taking a trip of self-discovery, and this week John Randolph Bentley (played by Jeremy Irvine) is hard-pressed to find himself. In Episode three we were left with him learning that Budapest was his last known location (although he has complete amnesia of his time there).

If you have been waiting patiently to have a better understanding about who is John Randolph Bentley and what happened to him back in 1973, this episode does not disappoint.

Treadstone S1x05 Bentley learns he tortured and killed people for the USSR
Bentley learns he tortured and killed people for the USSR

John learns he worked for the KGB. He indeed tortured and killed people while under the KGB’s control. On his self-discovery tour he meets several people who know him only as the terrible, scary, violent person he was during the four months that he was there. He visits the apartment where he lived, and the hidden room where he worked over his victims, some of them Americans. The room is still bloody – there was no cleanup after the last session.

Treadstone S1x05 The old video shows Bentley torturing victims
The old video shows Bentley torturing victims

The video cameras and monitors and recording tapes are all still in place, and he is able to witness the recording of the last torture session of an American handcuffed to the chair – the recording equipment has just been left waiting there for him to discover it and review his past bloody handiwork.

Young, red-headed Petra is in the video, too, and John watches himself obeying her counsel and accepting her affection. With amnesia having such a total lock on his brain, what John observes in the video recordings is enough to cause him to have a mental breakdown. He is desperate to remember. This, of course, is The Bentley Lament.

Treadstone S1x05 Bentley takes a trip on LSD
Bentley takes a trip on LSD

This also brings us to the moment he decides to drop LSD. I am certainly suspicious that John ran into Katya (played by Maja Simonsen) who was so capable and surprisingly ready to offer John an acid trip to “free his mind.” I don’t think serendipity factors into covert ops very much, so I am sure some treachery is afoot with this happenstance encounter.

I suspect that Katya is really an operative sent to get a rogue John back under the control of the KGB, or the CIA, or somebody. At the same time, I find myself incredulous that John, who is trained to see when red flags shoot up at all suspicious activity, would be willing to trust a stranger to provide him with a hallucinogenic drug when his mind has already been bent so badly. At first blush, it does not come across as a credible scenario.

    History of LSD
Click to learn the History of LSD

It might be, however, that we impugn John with our 21st Century notions about hallucinogenic substances. It is worthwhile to learn about the history of LSD and attitudes toward acid and its availability in the 60’s and 70’s.

In fact, the KGB and the CIA used LSD in attempts to create what we have come to call Manchurian Candidates. This is, of course, the foundation for the whole Jason Bourne story arc.

    Biography on Timothy Leary
    Visit Biography of Timothy Leary

But in truth, the late 1960’s and early 1970’s were a time when innocence still governed attitudes about substance abuse, and certainly LSD as a catalyst to open up what was really going on inside one’s head was not only a plausible idea at the time, but an idea that was being championed by many people including Professor Timothy Leary.

But please allow me to posit another explanation: John was already under an influence of some kind before he even met Katya. That’s right: Katya was working John while he was already in a hypnotic state. John’s red flag reflexes never had a chance.

I had to go back and re-watch “The Bentley Lament” to note that John was drinking and had stumbled into Katya when they first met. Is it possible someone slipped him a mickey in that drink?

    That’s what I think.

    What do you think?

‘The Kentucky Contract’, written by Tim Walsh and Dave Kalstein, and directed by Brad Anderson, delves deeper into the circumstances of three of the Cicada assassins in USA Network‘s Treadstone.

This fourth episode of the Jason Bourne saga/black ops thriller begins unpacking the baggage suffered by three of the assets produced by the Cicada program. This week we focus on just three of the subplots, each belonging to a Cicada.

We are given the opportunity to become a little more familiar with these three assassins:

Soyun in North Korea (played by Hyo-Joo Han), who failed a SIM card swap in the last episode, putting her mother and son at risk of a concentration camp.

Doug McKenna (played by Brian J Smith of Stargate Universe ) in ‘The Kentucky Contract’ was scheduled for elimination last episode when an operative came to the house to exterminate him. Doug was saved when his wife Samantha (played by Tess Haubrich of Alien: Covenant) shot the operative dead.

Treadstone S1x04 Patrick Fugit as Stephen Haynes
    Patrick Fugit as Stephen Haynes

Stephen Haynes (played by guest star Patrick Fugit , who played the teenager rock reporter William Miller in Almost Famous), is the perhaps rogue Cicada. Haynes has killed five people at a convenience store in the previous episode.

Now he has violently escaped his capture when hypnosis uncovered in him the memory of his daughter and an urgency to find her.

    play-sharp-fill

    The Kentucky Contract:

There is an enjoyable common thread between these three subplots/Cicada assets. Each of the three threads have deep ties that each character has to their family.

Do You Love Me? Dead Straight!

Treadstone S1x04 Brian Jacob Smith as Doug McKenna
Brian Jacob Smith as Doug McKenna

The cold open to this episode puts us with Doug and Samantha, reeling from the fact that there is a dead guy lying on the living room floor.

Doug is wondering what the hell just happened. Further, Doug wonders what he did to become a kill target to this dead man, put down by his wife who turns out to be a dead shot.

Samantha is wondering what the hell she should say to explain all this to her husband?

Treadstone S1x04 Tess Haubrich as Samantha McKenna
    Tess Haubrich as Samantha McKenna

The plot thickens a bit: Samantha has intimate knowledge of Doug’s conditioning that turned him into a Cicada asset. In this episode, she confesses that she had a hand in it.

She also confesses that she loves him, and with tears in her eyes, we are persuaded to believe her.

To cover up the crime, Doug and Samantha agree to bury the operative sent to kill Doug.

“I’m Not Who You Think I Am”

Treadstone S1x01 Cicada SoYun kills General Kwon
    Cicada SoYun kills General Kwon

Soyun, also awakened to the knowledge that she is conditioned to do the bidding of the Treadstone puppet masters, longs to resist the missions and simply remain a contented wife and a mother to a young son, yet she cannot say no to the Cicada call. Although the first mission to kill General Kwan (played by Tzi Ma) was a successful hit, a second operation she is told to perform does not go so well. One might consider it a less intense job, since it did not involve hands of steal. Instead, it involved slight of hand, and a task meant to simply expose Colonel Shin (played by Lee Jong Hyuk) as a traitor.

Treadstone S1x04 Hyo-JooHan as SuYun Pak
    Hyo-JooHan as SoYun Pak

Sadly it goes badly, and the SIM card swap did not happen. The consequence is losing both her mother and son to a concentration camp. Therefore, she falls back on her now-proven assassin skill set, because losing family is not acceptable. So she proceeds to take down (in Bruce Lee fashion) the soldiers sent to apprehend her mother and son. And once she is reunited with her family, she gives us a touching scene where she confesses, “My dear husband, I am not the kind of woman you think I am.” Clearly, she is conflicted about her new realized profession, and how it impacts her family.

Where O Where is Lila Jane?

Treadstone S1x04 Haynes is shackled and then hypnotized
Haynes is shackled and then hypnotized

Finally, we have Stephen Haynes. He is shackled and in protective custody, and we watch as CIA agent Matt Edwards (played by Omar Metwally) interrogates him while he is under hypnosis.

    Then two things happen.

While we learn nothing about who might have been Stephen’s handler, we instead discover that Stephen has a daughter, Lila Jane.

Treadstone S1x04 Haynes escapes leaving a path of death and destruction
Haynes escapes leaving a path of death and destruction

We also witness Stephen break from his shackles, kill the hypnotherapist, and create a path of destruction as he leaves the fortified facility on his way to find his daughter.

We are left wondering if interrogating a Cicada without using sedation, and not performed behind the bars of locked cage, is a good idea. Steel shackles, we observe, are not enough to restrain Cicada Haynes!

    Tying Together the Threads:

Treadstone S1x02 Ellen discusses what happened to General Kwon
Ellen discusses what happened to General Kwon

What arches over these three subplots is the crew that is trying to put it all together. Matt Edwards, the failed interrogator, is part of that team. So is Ellen Becker (played by Michelle Forbes).

They know of General Kwon’s murder. They know that he is connected to the Cicada program. They now know that Stephen Haynes is a Cicada with a daughter and they track him on his path to find her. They know that they have more dots to connect, but for now they are still unaware of a many of the dots.

Treadstone S1x03 Is J. Randolph Bentley the beginning of Treadstone
Is J. Randolph Bentley the beginning of Treadstone?

And I have to wonder, is John Randolph Bentley (Jeremy Irvine), who was there at the beginning of Treadstone in 1973, somehow lurking behind the curtain of all these events? I can’t help but wonder.

His Berlin nemesis Petra (Gabrielle Scharnitzky) is still involved after these 45 years. I have to think that Bentley is as well. Petra obviously chose career over family (she shot her hubby back in episode one). Possibly Bentley is likewise committed to the course of his career.

Maybe not all Treadstone operatives have personal entanglements. I suspect we will find out shortly.

Treadstone S1x05 Doug executes The Kentucky Contract
    Doug executes The Kentucky Contract

Meanwhile, North Korea is longing to adopt, and that adoption involves the ICBM Stiletto Six. That would make for an explosive family dynamic, for sure! Certainly, no story line is complete without a little family dysfunction.

This episode leaves us with Doug McKenna resuming with the Kentucky Contract mission, with the support and well-wishes of his wife.

We are left with Doug hoping that his warrior instincts will kick in when needed, and with Samantha hoping that Doug returns to her unscathed. Let’s hope this family duo survives!

    Hello Treadstone lovers!

‘The Berlin Proposal’, written by Rebecca Dameron and Dave Kalstein, Directed by Alex Graves, is an exciting episode is about the efficacy of psychological programming depicted in Treadstone!

This series is a bit overwhelming in a good way, burdened with many disparate sub-stories that will take a little time and some patience to see how they will all come together. Certain aspects begin to jell nicely in the third episode of Season 1 of USA Network’s new science fiction suspense action series, Treadstone.

It becomes clear that the current generation of Cicada sleepers, of what was originally the Treadstone project established in 1973, is suffering from distinct degrees of devolution. At least, that seems to be the outcome of some. One Cicada operative is now in custody after killing five innocents in a convenience store.

It seems both messy and random. On the other hand, out-of-work Cicada sleeper Doug McKenna (played by Brian J. Smith of Stargate Universe) seems to have stalled out. He heads home to his wife after being laid off from his oil rig gig.

Triggered by a picture put in his path, he is compelled to find a face at an address in his hometown, thus leading the viewer to believe he is headed to make his own kill. But his programming, somehow, does not seem complete. He goes to the location, makes a brief effort to find out who is this person he thinks he should find. When it doesn’t work out, he simply shrugs it off and heads on home, content to return his attention to his wife.

Treadstone S1x03 Soyun triggered by a Game Boy her son brought home
Soyun triggered by a Game Boy her son brought home

Meanwhile in North Korea, housewife SoYun Pak (played by Hyo-Joo Han) has been activated once she hears the French tune Frere Jaques from a Game Boy her son brought home. She immediately proceeds to complete her mission with the skill of Bruce Lee. Her mission is complete when she kills her target, General Kwon (played by Tzi Ma).

But while we contemplate the actions of each Cicada assassin, whether all five of those convenient store patrons were, in fact, innocent victims of the now-detained Cicada assassin, and whether or not SoYun’s mission was really a complete success since she lost possession of the lethal-injection syringe and had to kill General Kwon by strangulation, we are also asked to contemplate a deeper truth.

Treadstone S1x03 Is J. Randolph Bentley the beginning of Treadstone
Is J. Randolph Bentley the beginning of Treadstone?

We are asked to contemplate the nature of the human psyche, and whether human beings were ever meant to be objectified as mere products. We are asked to wrestle with this while we also wrestle with what can result from periods of dormancy.

We wonder whether the Cicada is, in fact, merely sleeping while awaiting its moment of programmed poignancy and significance. Or if, during dormancy, there is more going on within the heart and the soul of the synthesized human weapon.

    play-sharp-fill

Conversely, we wonder about Petra (played by Gabrielle Scharnitzky, from the 2015 Cold War miniseries The Game). She endured a dormancy of another type. Hers was a conscious quiescence, keeping unsung vigil next to a relic Soviet nuclear warhead. The warhead is, incidentally, also whiling away the decades, awaiting its moment to “become” what it was designed to do. We experience, along with Petra, how the socio-economic and governmental needs of an operative like Petra, and a warhead like Stiletto Six, have changed over the years.

We experience this as she makes her “moment of truth” call to home base, only to discover that the home base phone number now connects her to the lingerie department of a retail store off of Red Square, GUM, “the most iconic department store in Moscow,” according to Business Insider.

    The Berlin Proposal:

Treadstone S1x01 Petra kills Oleg to protect the Stiletto Six ICBM
Petra kills hubby Oleg to protect the Stiletto Six ICBM

In “The Berlin Proposal”, Petra lives up to her name: As in the Cicada Protocol when she discovered the Stiletto Six ICBM, she is solid as a rock for the cause to which she pledged allegiance nearly fifty years ago. Undaunted by the phone fail, she continues to activate herself, so to speak, making her way to the Kremlin, to her own apartment from the early days, and to what remains of her old contacts who have by now sold out to the current circumstances for self-aggrandizement.

Like any other trained human weapon would, she makes quick work eliminating her old handler and the assassin he sent to kill her. Clearly, her dormancy has not affected her strength, agility, and prowess in hand-to-hand combat, even though by now she should be somewhere in her mid 60’s.

Treadstone S1x03 Bentley lives a dangerous life after escaping CIA in 1973
Bentley lives a dangerous life after escaping CIA in 1973

Whatever conclusions we eventually reach about what might have happened during the dormancies of each of the Cicada assassins that could have affected their “quality” as operatives, or what else the upcoming episodes will develop about the individual characters, we still wait for the clues that will lead us to understand what motivated the current Cicada program.

We do not yet know when, where, and how recently the current batch of operatives were put through the program that would turn them from their original selves into the trigger-functioned assassins they have become.

Treadstone S1x03 Edwards and Well question Haynes
Omar Metwally as Edwards, Finbar Lynch as Dr. Wells, Patrick Fugit as Stephen Haynes

We do not yet know how John Randolph Bentley (played by Jeremy Irvine, who I absolutely loved in Spielberg’s War Horse), precisely figures in the story arc.

Bentley, who appears to be the first Treadstone operative to whom we are introduced through flashbacks to 1973, must somehow have a hard connection to the present day activations.

We only know that a present-day Bentley would have to be in his mid-60’s, at least, and that the present-day Cicada sleepers were programmed within the last 15 years, at most.

Treadstone S1x03 Doug and Tess McKenna appear to lead a normal life
Doug and Tess McKenna appear to lead a normal life

We know that at least Doug and SoYun can be activated by the tune Frere Jacques., although Doug appears to be leading a normal life since returning home.

We know that they are unaware that many of the people they regard as colleagues, superiors, even one who is a wife, might really be plants and handlers while the Cicadas “sleep.” And we are left to speculate on many other plot points that are (so far) hard to make out.

We also learn that there are operatives in other places, all over the world, who seem to be available, on call, and on target with regular missions. One was sent to take out the (presumably) defective Doug McKenna, who had shrugged off his mission and went home with his wife Samantha McKenna (played by Tess Haubrich). It seems Samantha had different ideas about whether Doug should be eliminated.

Apparently, she is okay that her product isn’t perfect. I look forward to seeing how her husband is developed as a human. Because – isn’t this the point? – humans were never meant to be merely “useful”.

Treadstone S1x03 amie Parker as Kohler, Jeremy Irvine as J. Randolph Bentley
Jamie Parker as Kohler, Jeremy Irvine as J. Randolph Bentley

In a world defined by consumerism, the disclaimer “results may vary” is on the label of many products.

In this third installment of Treadstone, writer/producer Dave Kalstein  and Tyler Hisel challenge us with the prospect that the current Cicada program may have produced sleepers with inconsistent results.

The sleeper operatives are awakening to all sorts of outcomes, and who is behind the waking of the Cicada Treadstone sleepers. Is it Bentley getting his revenge for what was done to him in 1973?

Treadstone S1x03 Just what is going on in Treadstone
Just what is going on in Treadstone?

The question remains, however, whether they are, in fact, defective, or if there is something more going on we have yet to discover?

We have a lot of revelations yet to be disclosed in this series by the creator Tim Fring. I for one am looking forward to how these vignettes will come together to make the whole Treadstone story arc become manifest!

    Hi Treadstone Lovers!

Treadstone is an excellent action science fiction thriller that is brought to our screens by NBC Universal Content Productions dovetailing the world of Jason Bourne, a successful series of movies that took the world by storm beginning in 2002.

In Treadstone, the story arc unfolds with “Cicada” like, dormant secret assassin agents across our world waking up to resume their deadly missions.

The Cicada are triggered by factors that will be revealed as this outstanding entertainment product unfolds before our very eyes on USA Network.

Much like the Bourne series, each agent in Treadstone appears to be a CIA assassin suffering from dissociative amnesia having been reprogrammed with different identities. Each agent must determine out who he or she really is.

    Jason Bourne poster
    Jason Bourne poster

The successful Bourne series was created by famous author Robert Ludlum (1927-2001) in which The Treadstone Project created Jason Bourne portrayed by Matt Damon. Damon starred in all the films sans one, when the Jason character was replaced by Jeremy Renner who portrayed a character named Aaron Cross that has to deal with the fallout of Jason Bourne. Matt Damon came back to star in the fifth and final film released in 2016 that wrapped the Bourne story arc nicely.

Although all of Ludlum’s novels were adapted faithfully for the big screen, the series actually started in 1988 as a television movie. Treadstone as a television series is a new spin off that leverages The Treadstone Project concept in which Ludlum is given posthumous credit as a writer for the first four critical episodes that sets the foundation of this exciting new series.

Treadstone is the creation of Executive Producer Tim Kring, known for his work in the original Knight Rider in 1986. Kring is well known for Crossing Jordan (2001-2007), Heroes (2006-2010), Touch (2012-2013), and Heroes Reborn (2015-2016) among many other fine entertainment products.

Having heard of Treadstone from tweets by Brian Jacob Smith on Twitter, we at Team WHR have Brian followed since his starring role in Stargate Universe (2009-2011).

Smith has been featured in science fiction series we loved including Warehouse 13, Defiance, and Sense8.

Smith is a Julliard trained actor of high caliber and quality whom we admire. Smith is also starring in another new series World On Fire (2019-). We suggest you check out this superb series in addition to Treadstone.

Our interest in Treadstone was further piqued when we found out that Michelle Forbes was an anchor character portraying Treadstone CIA Operative Ellen Becker.

Ms Forbes admirers will recall her memorable performances as Ensign Ro in Star Trek: The Next Generation (1989-1994), 24 (2001-2010) and importantly the second iteration of Battlestar Galactica (2005-2009) when she reprised the role of Commander Cain (originally played by Lloyd Bridges) from the original BSG when Michelle portrayed the role as a female Admiral Cain.

Michele also was a recurring character as well in the runaway hit series Orphan Black (2013-2017) to name but a few of her many accomplishments.

Treadstone Main Cast – Image courtesy Deadline Dot Com

Treadstone features many fine actors including Jeremy Irvine as J. Randolf Bentley, Hyo-Joo Han as SoYun Pak, Gabrielle Scharnitzky as Petra the Russian, Emilia Schüle as young Petra, Tracy Ifeachor as Tara Coleman, Michael Gaston as Dan Levine, Omar Metwally as Matt Edwards, legendary actor Tzi Ma as General Kwon, and many more fine actors!

As described by the USA Network, Treadstone utilizes flashbacks including “to the 1950s, the CIA started a series of highly classified programs experimenting on human subjects in order to develop drugs and procedures for the purpose of mind control. These programs were in response to the alleged use of mind control techniques by foreign powers at the height of the Cold War, most notably the Soviet Union.”

With Smith and Forbes, two fabulous actors anchoring key character roles in the series, Team WHR followed the Treadstone series and tweeted along with the actors during the two premiere episodes. Subsequent to viewing the second episode, we decided to form a team to write analysis of the series due to the superior high quality characteristics of the program.

We are publishing our analysis of “The Kwon Conspiracy” concurrent with the premiere episode “The Cicada Protocol” because the two episodes play like a single movie in our opinion. In fact, we think Treadstone should have been a two hour premiere.

    The Cicada Protocol:

Treadstone S1x01 Bentley strapped to a chair by evil Dr Maiser
Bentley strapped to a chair by evil USSR Dr Meiser

The series opens with a main series character named J. Randolph Bentley strapped to a chair in East Berlin. The year is 1973.

Bentley is a CIA Officer who has been captured by the Soviet Union.

Bentley is being abused, drugged and brainwashed as a test subject by his evil captor Doctor Meisner (Martin Umbach) and a woman who we learn is the young Petra (Emilia Schüle).

More on the elder version of Petra later.
