Episodes twelve and thirteen of season five, “The Voices” and “Novissima Solis” were written by Jackie May and Jonathan Walker and directed by Alexandra La Roche and Michael Nankin respectively. These entertainment industry veterans produced a superb series finale that all Van Helsing series fans should be applauding!

These two episodes wrapped the Van Helsing series story arc in a beautiful fashion with the fans of the series getting a real treat. Virtually all the characters survived with the exception of Bathory The Oracle (Jesse Stanley), The Dark One (Tricia Helfer) and Vanessa (Kelly Overton) who survived but sacrificed herself when the enchanted amulet was destroyed by The Dark One just prior to trapping Dracula inside of it.

Vanessa, knowing that she cannot live with the darkness inside herself, at the end, places herself in a deep comatose sleep much like in the 2016 pilot episode in order to contain the evil of Dracula from escaping again.

The Tricia Helfer character of sweet Olivia was restored to her human form, but will be living in the present time subsequent to our heroes defeating The Dark One.

Vanessa, although not killed in the series finale, bids farewell to her daughters and lives in a realm she has created where she is happy and fulfilled with what she has accomplished over the preceding five seasons.

Coming well after the death of the beloved Julius character, portrayed by Aleks Paunovic in “Graveyard Smash”, “The Voices” and “Novissima Solis” episodes were the perfect way to please viewers of the Van Helsing series

By taking our heroes Axel (Jonathan Scarfe), Jack (Nicole Muñoz), Violet (Keeya King) and Ivory (Jennifer Cheon Garcia) out of an extremely dangerous situation that could have led to the death or enslavement of all the characters in the series finale, and sending them on new paths into the future.

Special thanks are due for all the directors and writers of Van Helsing series such as Matt Venables and Jeremy Smith, and executive story editor Gorman Lee. Extra special thanks to Chad Oakes, Mike Frislev from Dynamic Television, series creator Neil LaBute, as well as all multi season producers and co-executive producers including Show Runner Jonathan Walker, Todd Giroux, Morris Chapdelaine, Jonathan Scarfe, and Kelly Overton. It goes without saying, that extraordinary thanks belong to all the crews that worked behind the scenes, all the supporting actors, AND to SYFY for bringing joy to the lives of the Van Helsing series lovers over the past five seasons!

As we stated on Twitter, the series finale episode was superb! In this way, the Van Helsing series story arc has been brought to a satisfying conclusion. Importantly, as Show Runner Jonathan Walker shared in his interview with Team WHR, “left hooks” that could spawn a spin off or mini-series in the future.

We hope that this will occur, however as we shared on Twitter the night of the series finale:

“Don’t cry because it is over, smile because Van Helsing happened in our lives for the past five years!”

    The Voices:

Van Helsing S5x11 Vanessa shape shifted in the body of Nina

The episode opens after a fight sequence between Vanessa as Nina and Bathory as seen in episode eleven “Undercover Mother” shown above.

In “The Voices”, Bathory has been saved while The Dark One and Vanessa in the shape shifted body of Ali Liebert fight each other in the Oval Office in the White House. Afterwards, Vanessa bites Dracula to weaken her. Vanessa shape shifts back to her true form taunting The Dark One by saying “Knowing that you let a Van Helsing get close enough to bite you!”.

Vanessa uses powers she obtained in the Dark Realm to blast Dracula, resulting in shock and dismay in The Dark One as the suppressed sweet Olivia comes to the surface, causing true panic in Dracula as she realizes she made a huge mistake in the past by not killing the Olivia host who is coexisting inside The Dark One.

Vanessa stabs Dracula and makes good an escape to consider what she has learned.

We segue to a warehouse with our heroes to a makeshift headquarters in Washington DC, not far from the White House.

Bathory is on a gurney suffering from Dracula’s invasion of her mind. Sergeant Weathers (Luvia Petersen) gave Bathory a sedative to ease the pain in her mind.

Vanessa fresh from her escape arrives in the warehouse, providing comfort to Bathory so that she can be utilized to read the enchanted scrolls when the time is right.

Meanwhile at the Oval Office, Dracula is recovering, summoning all her strength to brainwash Bathory again, forcing her to slit her own wrists so that she cannot be used to read the incantations from the enchanted scrolls.

Van Helsing S5x12 Axel outside the White House

Vanessa is successful in overcoming Dracula’s hold on Bathory who wakes up no longer plagued with blindness or having The Dark One in control of her mind… For the time being.

Axel is witnessed chatting with a General Lannister (Reese Alexander) to rescue the Vice President Eli Newton (Peter Bryant) in order to get the thought to be dead President Davis Park (Stephen Lobo) in a position to assume power when the fight with Dracula is complete as we learned in episode ten “E Pluribus Unum”.

Vice President Eli Newton at first believe does not what our heroes have shared with him about The Dark One shape shifting into the President. Violet suspects he could be a pawn of The Dark One, so Violet bites him to ensure that he is not a vampire in disguise.

We move to Jack who is going over the strategy to read from the enchanted ancient scrolls, while Jack bites Dracula to extract her power and trap The Dark One back inside in the amulet which has been returned to Bathory as part of the plan. Dracula seems to take control of Bathory again forcing her to stab Jack as Bathory is apparently called back to serve Dracula.

What our heroes do not know is that Bathory is fighting The Dark One and plans to kill herself so she cannot be used by Dracula ever again. Bathory is found on the roof with the amulet just as Dracula takes control of Bathory once again forcing her to open the amulet allowing the trapped power return to The Dark One returning Dracula to full strength!

Realizing what her life will be like, no matter how hard she tries, that she will forever be a slave to the will of Dracula. Bathory decides to jump off the roof. We were saddened at the death of Bathory The Oracle, hoping that she would become part of the final battle against The Dark One.

The episode ends with our heroes coming to a shocking conclusion; that their plan has been bankrupted by Dracula who is still in control at the White House at full evil strength!

    Novissima Solis:

Van Helsing S5x13 Our heroes mourn the death of Bathory
Our heroes mourn the death of Bathory. Image courtesy SYFY

The episodes open with The Dark One still in control at the White House. We see our heroes mourning Bathory in the parking lot after she jumped to her death of free herself from the power of The Dark One. Rest In Peace Bathory!

Examining Bathory’s corpse, Vanessa discovers how The Dark One has been able to control Bathory since the middle ages in the past. On the back of Bathory’s neck, Vanessa locates an evil pentagram burned into Bathory’s skin. In a somewhat gross scene, Vanessa cuts out the evil pentagram and transplants it into her own arm.

Vanessa’s strategy? To use the evil pentagram as a reverse communication device when the time is right to try and control Dracula’s mind and bring sweet Olivia to the surface once and for all. Vanessa surreptitiously enters Dracula’s mind and has a mental conference call with Olivia. Dracula catches on and ejects Vanessa, but not before the plan has been shared with sweet Olivia! Next Vanessa reaches out to Violet prior to the final battle with The Dark One.

Vanessa reveals another powerful weapon at their disposal. When helping Bathory before her death, Vanessa, during the mind meld has transferred the power Bathory had to activate the enchanted scrolls.

We move to our heroes now in league with Sergeant Weathers as head of security for President Davis Park.

Now at full power again, Dracula throws a curve ball at Axel, Vanessa, Jack, Violet, and Ivory who have made it through White House security.

The Dark One transmits an evil burst of energy that turns everyone who has not been turned human by the Van Helsings in to vampires.

This includes Sergeant Weathers, and President Davis Park’s security detail. Fortunately, President Davis Park is able to convince Sergeant Weathers that the Van Helsing’s can save her.

Weathers loyal to the President, agrees, and saves the first family, sacrificing herself in the process to a rabid gang of vampires. It was nice to see Luvia Petersen again and be a good gal character too!

Our heroes arrive at the Oval Office for the final confrontation with evil. Vanessa starts to read the incantations on the enchanted scrolls weakening The DarkOne.

In a turn-about attack, Dracula uses the last of her powers to throw Jack and Violet back, shatter the amulet, and squelch Vanessa’s voice her voice while calling in a old marker from season three; that Vanessa promised to kill Jack and Violet!

Van Helsing S5x13 Jack in the final moments to defeat Dracula

Vanessa, using special powers she obtained and honed to perfection in the Dark Realm, is able to thwart Dracula and reaches out to sweet Olivia to execute the final part of her plan to defeat The Dark One.

Dracula may be powerful, but with Bathory The Oracle dead, The Dark One is unable to control every detail in the final battle.

Vanessa returns to reading the incantations from the enchanted scrolls. The Dark One’s power is suspended like she was afflicted in the middle ages. Jack completes the process by biting Dracula, puncturing her skin, causing the evilness to leave The Dark One’s body.

Without the enchanted amulet, Vanessa makes the final move, sucking the cloud of evil unto her own body. and Jack are able to pounce on her and sink their teeth into her neck placing Vanessa into a coma much like we were introduced to her in the very first episode of the Van Helsing series.

Van Helsing S5x13 Jack Violet and Ivory in series finale victory
Jack, Violet and Ivory in series finale victory. Image by Daniel Power Nomadic Pictures, courtesy SYFY

Thank goodness that our Van Helsing series heroes have obtained the victory over The Dark One that we all hoped would become manifest in the final episode!

Now that The Dark One is defeated, all the people who had been enslaved as vampires are returned to human form. Sweet Olivia takes control of her body and will live out a pleasant life in our time.

President Davis Park is returned to office at the White House and presents Axel, seen in full dress uniform, with the highest honors possible. Subsequent to the ceremony, Axel makes a personal decision to devote his life to take care of the comatose Vanessa just like he did in the 2016 pilot episode.

We witness Violet taking Olivia on a happy go lucky tour in Washington DC after their victory the present. Violet shares details about what year it is and what a wonderful place it is without The Dark One enslaving humanity and ruining everyone’s lives.

Van Helsing S5x13 Ivory and Jack finally share a tender moment together
Ivory and Jack finally share a tender moment together. Image by Daniel Power Nomadic Pictures, courtesy SYFY

Ivory, our beloved leader of the Sisterhood, after kissing her lover Jack, makes a decision. Inviting Jack to join her in the future because Ivory must complete her own mission; to find all the Sisterhood survivors wherever they may be on planet Earth.

Jack, although sad that she will be missing Ivory in the short term, knows that she will be reunited with Ivory in the future. Jack let’s go for the time being and will enjoy the present, free of evil, with Violet and sweet Olivia.

The final sequences take us inside Vanessa’s mind now living in an enchanted realm free of evil. Vanessa is reunited with Susan (Hilary Jardine), Ivory reunites with Callie (Macie Juiles), and returns to her apartment before The Rising to find her daughter Dylan (Hannah Cheramy) who has grown into a beautiful young woman!

Everyone on the series finale night was very happy to witness this touching final scene!

As the series finale concludes, leaving us quite content, let all believe that Vanessa is not living in a dream world in her mind, but is working on a way in a realm of goodness to reset history.

We would like to see Vanessa travel back in time once again to work with Abraham (Michael Eklund) like she did with Jack, or perhaps having pizza like she did at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019! This image use in our final analysis of the Van Helsing series was inspired by Mona Per (Click here to visit and follow Mona on Twitter). Thanks Mona!

Perhaps such is a suitable vehicle would be a made for television movie or mini-series on SYFY to bring a Back To The Future aspect to the Van Helsing series so that all the characters who were killed so that they can live happy lives in new reality free of evil darkness?

    Fingers crossed Helsingers!

Today, June 25, 2021 we were honored to interview Aleks Paunovic!

Aleks has recently completed a fabulous new movie named “Chained” and another just announced called “Zero Contact” starring with several of our favorite actors; Anthony Hopkins, Rukiya Bernard, and Adrian Holmes! During the interview we focused on Van Helsing, Snowpiercer and Chained. I had wanted to be part of the interview, but was unable to due to a personal family reason, so Kenn graciously conducted the interview without me.

Aleks Paunovic was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The 6’5″ actor says that boxing is what shaped him. His father, grandfather, and uncle were all champion boxers in the old Yugoslavia, so Aleks grew up with it, he admits. Boxing was always a part of his life and has been featured often in his acting career.

Aleks was injured at the Pre Pan Am games in a boxing match, and that recovery period, in part, led him to re-think his life and what he wanted to do. He realized that he always wanted to tell stories. “I feel like sports is mental, physical, and shapes character with so much humility wrapped up in confidence” says Aleks. “I found it compelling, and acting is in the same world. I wanted to recreate those emotions and feelings in people, by telling stories”.

When it comes to science fiction series and films, Aleks admits that he never was a SYFY guy until he started acting. “What I love about it, is that you get to create your own ideas of a character, and create the way a character walks, looks, all of that. There’s so much freedom in the science fiction world”.

Paunovic, currently starring in “Chained” produced by “My Precious Pictures“, has created many memorable characters in appearances on such shows as Battlestar Galactica, Stargate, Smallville, Once Upon a Time, Psych, Arctic Air, The 100, Arrow, iZombie, Continuum, Supernatural, Snowpiercer and Van Helsing.

Aleks has had parts in popular films like War for the Planet of the Apes and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, and worked alongside Keanu Reeves in Siberia, Liam Neeson in Cold Pursuit, and Anthony Hopkins, Ray Liotta in Blackway, Numb with Marie Avgeropoulos and Paul McGillian, and many more films and television series.

“Throughout my career, I’ve played a lot of baddies” Paunovic laughs, “I have a blast with it, just because I don’t really connect to being a baddie in real life. But playing bad dudes in film and television has been a blast”.

    Aleks Paunovic in Numb

When asked about favorite characters that he’s created over the years, “one of the ones that really sticks out to me is a film that David Hollander wrote and directed called Personal Effects with Kathy Bates, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Ashton Kutcher. I played a mentally challenged man who was accused of killing someone”.

“It was an opportunity where I got to play somebody that wasn’t strong, that wasn’t an alpha, and was in an extremely vulnerable state. I worked really hard on that character. I gained 60 pounds of ‘bad weight’ because I didn’t want to look strong in it”.

“I remember seeing it in the theater with an audience and some of the pivotal moments of telling the story of that character – to watch how it affected people in the audience – I always go back to that being one of the proudest moments within my career”.

Van Helsing S5x06 Julius must make a decision
Julius must make a decision in his second to last Van Helsing appearance. Image courtesy SYFY

Audiences might recognize Paunovic from SYFY’s Van Helsing, where he stars as Julius, a character who’s never afraid to get physical. When he originally auditioned for and landed the part of Julius in season one of the show, the character was an aggressive, fear-inducing vampire.

At the beginning of season two, however, Julius became human again, which was a welcome surprise for Paunovic. A boxing backstory sweetened the deal even more: “I was literally like a giddy little kid then they told me they wrote a boxing episode”, Paunovic laughs. “

The opportunity to go from vampire to human, and basically just doing ‘Aleks’ within that character was really a huge breath of fresh air, and I loved that aspect of playing Julius. But it’s bittersweet. It’s the best gig that I’ve had, and the longest gig I’ve had,” he laments, referring to the end of the series that sees Julius sacrifice all in his last episode “Graveyard Smash” which aired last week (Click here to learn about Aleks last appearance as Julius).

    Aleks Paunovic in Snowpiercer

Paunovic’s lovable giant of a character, Breachman Bojan “Boki” Boscovic, on TNT’s Snowpiercer, had a mere two-episode run in the first season. “I went in for the audition, and it was originally a Polish character named Harold,” Paunovic says, “And I’m Serbian, so sometimes I’ll improv in Serbian. So, when I got the role, I was like, ‘Okay, now I have to tell them I don’t speak Polish and that my improv was in Serbian, so either we take it out, or we make the guy Serbian!’”

Paunovic coaxed showrunner Graeme Manson to go along with his ideas for the character, even allowing him to name the burly mechanic after his own brother, Bojan. “Come on, man. Breachman Boki Boscovic!” he laughs, “How great of a name is that? I get to make him mine. He’s Serbian and I get to give my brother a tribute”.

Aleks is also working on a passion project in his hometown of Winnipeg, creating a production studio called Wonderlight Studios formed in 2019. “Winnipeg, has, arguably, the best tax credit in North America. Not only that, we want to create jobs within my hometown. Covid has definitely put a little bit of a hurt on things at the moment, but we are building relationships and looking forward to expanding Winnipeg into a vital production city”, Paunovic says.

    Welcome fans of Kelly Overton!

On Thursday June 18, 2021 we were afforded the honor to interview Kelly Overton just prior to the final four episode of the Van Helsing series, three of which broadcast on last night on Friday June 18, 2021 featuring Ms. Overton.

This was subsequent to her return to the series in “The Doorway” episode broadcast a couple of weeks ago to much acclaim from the millions of followers of this superb science fiction fantasy series that has captivated Dracula fans around the world!

We first became aware of Ms. Overton starring as Vanessa in the Van Helsing series when Team WHR attended the San Diego Comic Con Van Helsing panel in 2016 that was produced by Chad Oakes and Mike Frislev of Nomadic Pictures in association with Dynamic Television.

Since that time members of our team and Dracula mythology lovers from around the world have tweeted their hearts out supporting Kelly and the Van Helsing series virtually every week with very few exceptions since the series began it’s successful five year run on SYFY in the United States in September 2016.

Ms. Overton, who took a brief period of time off for personal reasons, has appeared in fifty-three of the sixty-five episodes to our absolute delight!

Prior to that time, we have enjoyed Kelly’s performances in many television series including Legends, True Blood, Beauty and the Beast, Tekken, and many other career accomplishments in her over two decades within the entertainment industry.

In 2020, while taking time away from the series for family reasons, Kelly, in 2019 began her role as co-executive producer for the Van Helsing series to ensure the fourth and fifth seasons stayed faithful to the story arc originally envisioned by series creator Neil LaBute.

In this regard, Kelly Overton was quite successful as an executive co-producer when the Van Helsing series pivoted to the discovery of two Van Helsing series children that she (we) never knew she had.

Kelly worked tirelessly behind the scenes to guide the production as an executive co-producer that featured her two daughters, Jack and Violet, portrayed by Nicole Muñoz and Keeya King respectively.

In this way, Kelly was always involved with the Van Helsing series even if we did not see her on screen.

Returning to her starring role in season five as Vanessa, Kelly’s fans around the world went wild when Vanessa reappeared in the flesh in “The Doorway“!

During this exciting episode Vanessa battled her own dark side to become ready to (hopefully) defeat the common enemy of all humankind, The Dark One, Dracula (Tricia Helfer) in the series finale broadcasting this Friday on June 25, 2021 on SYFY!

Ms. Overton moved to New York Cuty subsequent to her high school years to study the performing arts at the distinguished American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Kelly, after dedicated focus on many elements of the entertainment industry, graduated with the highest honors, known as The Charles Jehlinger Award.

During her time in New York, Kelly performed in the theater at various off-Broadway venues and in regional Shakespeare plays. Kelly then went on in the entertainment industry in several television series including the fabled Soap Opera All My Children in 2000 and 2001 of which I was a fan.

Kelly then made the substantial leap to the Broadway stage, debuted in the leading role of “Elaine Robinson” in the original cast of “The Graduate” starring opposite Kathleen Turner and Jason Biggs.

It was during “The Graduate” production when she met her her future husband, Judson Pearce Morgan, who was a member of the cast of along with Alicia Silverstone. This time in her career was filled with fond memories for Kelly Overton who has always remembered her performing arts roots are on the stage in the theater..

Kelly’s career brought her west to Los Angeles after five successful years in the New York area. Working consistently in the film and television industry. The ninth episode of season five, “The Doorway” represents the story arc that heralded the long awaited return of Vanessa (Kelly Overton) to the Van Helsing series leading to the series finale scheduled for Friday June 25, 2021.

Wonderfully written by Neil LaBute, the Van Helsing series creator, “The Doorway” takes us on a stroll down memory lane featuring select scenes that Vanessa experienced over time all the way back to season one.

The excitement of Vanessa returning was dovetailed in this masterpiece by LaBute and Director Alexandra La Roche, whom many will recall from her science fiction work dating back her fine work on the classic “War of the Worlds” television series (1989), Fringe (2008-2013), Eureka (2006-2011), to current science fiction fantasy hit series like “Legends of Tomorrow”, “Supergirl”, Van Helsing series, in addition to many more script supervision and directing accomplishments during her career!

As viewers will witness in “The Doorway”, Vanessa fights a dark spirit entity that turns out to be herself. In this superb story that pairs Vanessa with her savior from the original pilot, Axel (Jonathan Scarfe), we will learn how Vanessa’s soul went from an innocent victim and mother trying to save her daughter Dylan (Hannah Cheramy) during The Rising, to a tortured soul that was in danger of being overtaken by the Dark Side.

During “The Doorway” we will meet many old Van Helsing series friends and adversaries including Scarlett (Missy Peregrym), Sam (Christopher Heyerdahl), Julius (Aleks Paunovic), Doc (Rukiya Bernard), Rebecca (Laura Mennell), Bathory The Oracle (Jesse Stanley), Susan (Hilary Jardine), Mohamad (Trezzo Mahoro), and in a revealing flashback sequence, a young Vanessa portrayed by Alexa Grace Arlitt.

This was when Vanessa first realized that only by confronting the Dark Side, in order to overcome evil, was in her future destiny in the battle to save the world!

This conflict potentially makes Vanessa an easy target for the evil of Dracula The Dark One (Tricia Helfer) and her minion Bathory The Oracle that will culminate in the final battle of good versus evil that looms just up ahead in the Van Helsing series.

Trusting only Axel, Vanessa uses her considerable powers as a vampire hunter to bring him to the Dark Realm where she is trapped to solve the dilemma that must be addressed!

The question to be addressed in “The Doorway” is will Axel be able to help Vanessa to save her soul, return to her daughters Jack (Nicole Muñoz) and Violet (Keeya King), Ivory (Jennifer Cheon Garcia), who has been turned to good and is the last known surviving member of the Sisterhood.

As we begin our analysis review, we are certain that a good luck hug for Vanessa is in order!

“The Doorway” episode opens with Axel and Violet subsequent to splitting up from Jack and Ivory to ensure that both Van Helsing’s are not captured before they can hopefully enlist the aid of Bathory to ultimately defeat Dracula, The Dark One before she enslaves the entire world and all of humanity.

Everything that is now hanging in the balance!

Axel and Violet are on the way to Washington DC to confront The Dark One. Their goal is to and hopefully link up with Jack, Violet and Ivory in the process to plan the final battle against The Dark One.

We find Axel and Violet at a camp fire at night. Violet is still suffering from being unable to sleep, feeling guilty about being unable to save Julius. Having trouble sleeping, Violet says that she will take the first watch so Axel can get some much needed rest.

Axel, exhausted from the entire ordeal, including losing his best friend Julius while continuing the journey to face off with our heroes against The Dark One, falls into a deep sleep.

When Axel wakes up, he is no longer with Violet at the camp fire, but is instead in a surreal environment, near a farm house he does not recognize. Axel is immediately confronted by a black evil spirit with glowing eyes that apparently knows his name!

We will learn later the evil spirit knows Axel because it is is actually Vanessa’s alter ego of darkness that refuses to let her leave the Dark Realm for a reason we do not yet know about.

The frightening spirit has attacked Vanessa, slitting her throat from Vanessa’s last attempt to go through ”The Doorway”. The dark spirit entity refuses to let Vanessa enter “The Doorway” from the Dark Realm to rejoin her daughters Jack and Violet.

Axel finds the injured Vanessa, and takes her to the farm house so that she can heal from her injuries.

When Vanessa regains consciousness, she explains to Axel what has happened; that The Dark One sent her to this location in the Dark Realm to imprison Vanessa ultimately keeping her from escaping back to the real world.

Vanessa determines that subsequent to when she and The Dark One jumped into the wormhole portal at the end of season three, Dracula sent her here to be trapped by the evil spirit who is guarding “The Doorway”, the wormhole back to our reality in the present.

Vanessa shares that she has been plagued by memories from her past that are distracting her each time she makes an attempt to escape through “The Doorway” located in a field outside the farm house.

Van Helsing S5x09 Vanessa shares details of her imprisonment with Axel after healing

Viewers will recall the farmhouse from previous seasons. Vanessa explains to Axel that “This is where Sam killed Susan. And it is where I should have killed Sam”.

By not killing Sam, viewers will also recall that Sam was turned to evil, turned into a vampire, eventually sacrificing his own life to make the Birth Ritual of Dracula become manifest in our reality at the end of season three.

Vanessa continues to share the memories she has been experiencing while being trapped in the Dark Realm. We relive moments including when Axel saved her, the reign of Rebecca who turned Dylan into a vampire, Mohamed being tormented by Sam, Susan being killed, Scarlett also sacrificing herself to save Vanessa.

When Vanessa turned Julius back to human form after his service to the band of vampires subsequent to his time in Chicago with Nina (Ali Leibert) before The Rising.

Van Helsing S2x03 If Dylan does not get fresh blood she will die
If Dylan does not get fresh blood she will die of starvation. Image courtesy SYFY

Among the most traumatic memories Vanessa is experiencing are the scenes from the past was when Vanessa captured a human to feed her daughter Dylan.

Vanessa believed that she could turn Dylan back a human being as well after successfully turning Julius back to human form.

Viewers will recall that this was successful with the exception that Dylan’s had been infected with a weakness, that sunlight would cause Dylan to disintegrate. This scene was one of the most poignant in the entire series with fans around the world reaching for their crying towels to commiserate with Vanessa when Dylan was killed!

The devastating loss of her daughter Dylan was without doubt the memory that ultimately sent Vanessa down a dark path that led to the creation of the evil dark spirit entity, her own alter ego stopping her from using “The Doorway” to rejoin her family and friends in the present.

Van Helsing S5x09 Vanessa confronts her dark side
Vanessa confronts her dark side. Image by Daniel Power Nomadic Pictures Inc, courtesy SYFY

During the stroll down memory lane with Axel, he and Vanessa realize that she must have summoned Axel to help her deal with something critically important; her own dark past that created the evil spirit guarding “The Doorway” because Vanessa was not ready until she addressed, confronting the darkness that is in her own soul that must be balanced with the light of goodness that is Vanessa.

This factor comes to a climax when Vanessa shares a memory with Axel about the time her mother was killed in an automobile accident when she was a little girl.

With Axel’s support, Vanessa figures it out recalling a statement Axel made to her when Scarlett sacrificed herself. “You can’t fight the darkness. You are the darkness”. Vanessa then makes the logical jump, the evil spirit outside is herself!

Vanessa and Axel head outside to confront the evil spirit revealing the truth to the viewers, it is Vanessa!

Van Helsing S5x09 Vanessa shape shifts into Nina

The facade on the evil spirit fades but tries to attack Vanessa once again.

Now energized with the knowledge of enlightenment, Vanessa absorbs the dark side of herself emerging from the encounter stronger than ever!

Vanessa and Axel discuss what the next steps are. She says that she will shape shift into a form The Dark One will never suspect; Nina.

We then witness Vanessa out in front of the White House shape shifting into Nina!

Vanessa sends Axel back to Violet so all our heroes can link up in Washington DC to defeat The Dark One!

The tweets of joy about this development in the Van Helsing series swept social media as “The Doorway” come to an exciting conclusion. Everyone we know was celebrating that Vanessa is really back and will lead the fight against The Dark One with Jack and Violet at her side!

The return of our hero Vanessa to our reality leads to the tenth episode in a three episode marathon on Friday June 18, 2021 beginning with episode ten “E Pluribus Unum”, followed by episodes eleven “Undercover Mother”, and twelve “The Voices” which sets up the series finale “Novissima Solis”.

On June 25, 2021 in “Novissima Solis”, our heroes will meet up to face off with the Dracula Dark One in what will be undoubtedly become the ultimate battle to save the world, indeed all of humanity, from being consumed by evil forever!

Our fervent hope at Team WHR is that all our heroes will survive!

This week, on Thursday June 10, 2021 we had the honor to interview Nicole Muñoz, star of the superb science fiction fantasy series Van Helsing returning in the fifth season to reprise her revealing role as “Jack” on a mission to defeat the evil that has infested our world!

It is an understatement to say that we were excited to interview Nicole again after meeting her in person at the fabled Pop Culture event San Diego Comic Con in July 2019. During our press room SDCC interview with Nicole and the Van Helsing actors.

Recalling those times brought back fond memories of Nicole Muñoz where we experienced the time of our lives with her as she was enjoying her visit to San Diego while preparing for the fourth season premiere of Van Helsing in September 2019 on SYFY.

At that time in July of 2019, we found Nicole Muñoz to be a personable, very friendly, and an approachable actor who has an unmistakable zest for life that shines through in every performance she has undertaken during her acting career!

Nicole Muñoz with Joe Flanagan in Stargate Atlantis

Team WHR has been a long time admirer of Nicole Muñoz ever since we first became aware of her terrific talent portraying a character named Hedda, a young lady in a Stargate Atlantis guest starring with Joe Flanigan in 2005. Since that time, Nicole has been a star or featured guest star such memorable series including Sanctuary, Defiance, Pyewacket, and Supernatural before earning her starring role in Van Helsing!

Our experience with Nicole this year was equally wonderful! She is always fun to chat with about her role as “Jack” in specific, and her acting career in general.

Nicole shared delightful aspects of her time with Van Helsing including Behind The Scenes (BTS) fun, and her awesome trip to Slovakia in Europe to film the first three episodes of season five. As fans of the series know, this was before being awakened in the present by Julius (Aleks Paunovic) Axel (Jonathan Scarfe), Violet (Keeya King) and Ivory (Jennifer Cheon Garcia) in episode seven “Graveyard Smash” after she put herself to sleep subsequent to an extremely dangerous situation in the dark ages that could have led to “Jack’s” untimely demise.

We include Nicole’s full interview below for your enjoyment.

Nicole Muñoz was born and raised in Vancouver, Canada beginning her acting career at the tender age of four. With nearly twenty years of acting experience, Nicole has garnered over 57 acting credits including beloved shows such as Once Upon A Time, Supernatural, The 100, Defiance, Stargate Atlantis, Hemlock grove, and of course her leading role in the superb series SYFY’s Van Helsing.

As we know, Nicole Muñoz also known as our hero Jack Van Helsing, the science fiction program that we have loved here at Team WHR is now entering the ninth episode of season five on a road to what will certainly be an outstanding series finale scheduled to broadcast in July in the United States to be followed thereafter with a worldwide release on Netflix in 2022.

Nicole will be joining the cast of Diggstown, a Canadian drama series featured on the CBC Network. The great news is that has been picked up by Fox Broadcasting in the United States.

During her interview, Nicole shared with that she is currently in Halifax, Nova Scotia where Diggstown is filming it’s next season and that she is ecstatic to be there. We like millions of her admirers can’t wait to see her smiling face and acting talent in Diggstown!

Diggstown follows lead character Marcie Diggs (Vinessa Antoine, Being Erica, Heartland), a star corporate lawyer who reconsiders her priorities after her beloved aunt commits suicide following a malicious prosecution. The team of lawyers that Marcie works with are a curious band of do-gooders, cynics and scrappers – messy souls struggling to keep personal disappointment and demons out of their practice. They work directly in the community to find justice for their diverse clients, exploring issues of racism, poverty and gender bias. Joining Antoine is a star-studded cast including Natasha Henstridge (Species), C. David Johnson (Street Legal), Stacey Farber (Grace and Frankie), Brandon Oakes (Arctic Air), Shailene Garnett (Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments), Tim Rozon (Wynonna Earp), and Dwain Murphy (Titans).

    Welcome back Helsingers and WormholeRiders!

The eighth episode of season five, “Deep Trouble” represents the pivot episode in the story arc before the long awaited return of Vanessa Van Helsing (Kelly Overton).

Written by two of our favorites Jeremy Smith and Matt Venables who raised the bar on excitement bringing many fans to wonder if all the heroes will survive in an excellent episode directed by industry veteran Jacquie Gould, all of whom we have admired for years!

There was some social media chatter that “Deep Trouble” was a filler episode leading to the series finale coming in July on SYFY in the United States. We here at Team WHR could not disagree more with this assessment, “Deep Trouble” was NOT a filler episode, but an important story leading to the series finale.

Van Helsing S5x07 Julius prepares to make the ultimate sacrifice
Van Helsing S5x07 Julius makes the ultimate sacrifice. Image by Daniel Power/Nomadic Pictures Inc, courtesy SYFY

Coming shortly after the death of the Julius character portrayed by Aleks Paunovic, “Deep Trouble” was the perfect way to increase the character tension of the viewers by placing our heroes Axel (Jonathan Scarfe), Jack (Nicole Muñoz), Violet (Keeya King) and Ivory (Jennifer Cheon Garcia) in an extremely dangerous situation that could have led to the death of another character before the series finale. It is season five after all and everyone may not survive!

Bravo to all involved, especially Jeremy Smith and Matt Venables and Jacquie Gould for the awesome episode which featured a fine young actor named Avionne Dean and a WormholeRiders favorite, Steve Bacic, who we have admired ever since he was featured in the X-Files, Stargate SG-1, Andromeda and recently in Debris!

Team WHR would like to give special thanks to all the writers of Van Helsing, to Chad Oakes and Mike Frislev from Nomadic Pictures, series creator Neil LaBute, and season five executives and producers Jonathan Walker, Todd Giroux, Morris Chapdelaine, Jonathan Scarfe, and Kelly Overton for bringing the Van Helsing story arc full circle since season one. As well, all our admiration goes out to all the crews and crafts people that make Van Helsing come to life on our screens each week for the past five years!

The “Deep Trouble” episode focuses on Axel, Violet, Jack and Ivory who are on their way to Washington D.C. to (hopefully) finish off Dracula The Dark One (Tricia Helfer) who has shape shifted into the body of the President of the United States in an effort to enslave the entire world!

Suddenly, but not unexpectedly, our vampire hunting heroes are attacked by misguided minions of the President who has taken control of the United States military with the express purpose of hunting down and killing vampire hunters, especially any associated with the Van Helsing sisters!

This awesome adventure forces our heroes to seek shelter in an abandoned mine to save their lives.

The cave ultimately turns out to be not so abandoned as we witnessed in the “Deep Trouble” episode.

The episode opens with Violet sitting on a tree stump drawing a beautiful picture of Julius to commemorate for posterity that he saved her in the previous episode “Graveyard Smash”, sacrificing himself in the process.

The pain of what has happened is clearly visible in Violet’s as she draws the picture of Julius’ face.

Axel, Jack and Ivory are nearby. Axel is trying to repair their truck while Jack and Ivory are resting and chatting. It appears that a relationship is developing between our two female heroes.

Axel is unable to repair the truck forcing our vampire hunters to once again walk to their destination for the time being.

Van Helsing S5x08 Axel tries to help Violet

Axel takes note of the fact that Violet is in pain over the loss of Julius. Sincerely attempting to help, Axel tries to share her pain. Violet misinterprets Axel intentions and lashes out bringing the death of her aunt Scarlett’s (Missy Peregrym).

This outburst from Violet incident leaves a bitter taste in each other’s mouths that will soon be set aside as our group will be confronted by military operatives send by The Dark One to kill them.

As Jack, Violet, Ivory and Axel find themselves in a and old amusement park they suddenly come under heavy fire when a military helicopter attacks them, firing rockets at them destroying  much of their weapons stash.

Van Helsing S5x08 Our heroes seek shelter in an abandoned mine

Fleeing for their lives, our heroes seek shelter in an abandoned mine near the amusement park that contains a foul stench.

The mine is home to a feral vampire (Steve Bacic) who looks like a caveman from the ancient past on Earth. We will refer to this character as Caveman Dad the vampire.

It is obvious he was turned into a vampire either during or perhaps before The Rising. We will soon find out he is a father and is simply protecting his family, a young daughter named Emmett.

Caveman Dad attacks Axel while Jack, Ivory, Violet, open fire to save him. Unfortunately, the gunfire causes a cave in that separates Ivory and Axel from Jack and Violet who now each seek an alternate exit from the mine. Caveman Dad escapes, apparently unharmed.

Van Helsing S5x08 Ivory and Axel find the Raiders of the Lost Ark cave shaft

Ivory, who has feelings for Jack, confides this to Axel as they proceed to find a way out of the mine. Ivory asks Axel how he deals with the lose of his love, Scarlett.

Although a sensitive subject for Axel, he shares details about the love of his life with Ivory who is concerned that the same thing could happen to one or more of our heroes as they seek to destroy The Dark One.

Unlike the angry discussion between Axel and Violet, Axel shares with Ivory that he really has never gotten over the loss of Scarlett.

As they approach a vertical shaft which brings us to scenes similar to Indiana Jones. Ivory and Axel successfully jump across but left many viewers wondering if a giant round boulder is coming next just like in “Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark”!

Van Helsing S5x08 Jack and Violet find Emmetts home in the cave

We segue to our Van Helsing hero sisters. Jack and Violet, who are planning their strategy to confront and hopefully defeat Dracula, The Dark One.

The battle, is looming in the not too distant future, and both are concerned about the future while working in the present to simply survive.

Still dealing with the loss of Julius, Violet shares with Jack that “love can cloud your vision” relating a story from season four when she lost her boyfriend Lee (Ryan Jinn).

Jack, who had never heard about this story, feels empathy for Violet. The discussion strengthens the bond between the sisters.

As they continue to seek a way out of the caves, Jack and Violet stumble into a section of the cave network that appears to be fully decked out with furniture, food, and other living amenities. Nearby they find a very young girl. Jack and Violet wonder how in the heck a young person could possibly  have survive since The Rising on her own?

Putting two and two together, Jack and Violet figure out that feral vampire that attacked them earlier must be the young ladies father. Violet and Jack hatch a plan to find Caveman Dad, bite him to return Dad to human forms and provide the little girl with a real father.

Being a survivor, Emmett instead rips the amulet from Jack’s neck and takes off to go find her Dad. As we mentioned above, this young actor, Avionne Dean (pictured right) did a superb job portraying Emmett!

Van Helsing S5x08 Jack bites Caveman Dad to turn him human

Back to Axel and Ivory, Caveman Dad has hunted them down, attacking Axel. Ivory takes aim to kill Caveman Dad when Jack shows explaining what is happening explaining that she intends to turn Caveman Dad back to human form with a good bite to the neck. Emmett can apparently understand some English and returns the amulet to Jack.

Jack and Ivory go to find Caveman Dad to complete Jack’s plan. Emmett, Axel, and wait for the hopefully successful outcome. Jack uses a sharp knife to slash her hand as a lure to bring Caveman Dad to them.

Caveman Dad, a survivor in his own right, throws Jack aside, who is sent reeling and is knocked out. Caveman Dad is simply too strong, then attacks Ivory, apparently breaking her arms.

Hearing the sounds of battle and Ivory’s screams, Axel, Violet, and Emmett come back just in time as Jack jumps on Caveman Dad and successfully converts him back to human form. Now no longer Caveman Dad, just Dad, he promptly hugs his daughter.

Mission accomplished and none our heroes perished while in “Deep Trouble”. YAY!

As they leave the mine, Axel shares that they must make a very difficult decision.

Axel tells our heroes that have to split up if they have any chance of defeating The Dark One. Importantly so that both Van Helsing sisters cannot be potentially captured at the same time as they head to Washington D.C.

Our heroes splitting up leads to next weeks tenth episode, the pivot subsequent to “Deep Trouble” when we learn more in an episode called “The Doorway” which features the return of Vanessa Van Helsing as mentioned above.

As such, we will wait to pose new questions after we learn details about “The Doorway”!

In the poignant seventh episode of season five, “Graveyard Smash” features the joyous return of Jack (Nicole Muñoz). The episode was written jointly by Matt Venables and Jeremy Smith, and delightfully directed by Leslie Hope.

What Team WHR noticed when viewing was that all the Helsingers were rooting for the efforts of Violet (Keeya King) and Ivory (Jennifer Cheon Garcia) who barely escaped with their lives in “Sisterhunt”. As well, Julius (Alek Paunovic) and Axel (Jonathan Scarfe), who fought to escape the malevolent minions of Dracula The Dark One (Tricia Helfer) in “Carpe Noctis” are rejoined with Violet and Ivory.

Van Helsing S5x07 Jack is back!

This episode featuring the return of Nicole Muñoz is subsequent to three of the remaining members of the Sisterhood, who had been converted back to human form, who were killed, sacrificing their lives trying to thwart the malignant minions of The Dark One.

In this episode we find Violet and Ivory are rightfully in mourning, devastated at the loss of their now human vampire hunting sisters.

Evading a hunting party of their own was Julius and Axel, who also barely escaped death when Dracula’s terrible troopers trapped outside Fort Collins them due to the capabilities of Bathory The Oracle (Jesse Stanley). Axel and Julius have an excellent tool, the enchanted magic compass that is pointing the way to the Van Helsing sisters.

Van Helsing S5x06 Julius must make a decision
Julius makes a decision in Van Helsing. Image courtesy SYFY

The heartrending episode features questions in “Graveyard Smash” we must consider; How far behind Violet and Ivory are Julius and Axel? Will all our heroes survive after finding Jack?

The great news answers are that in this episode Jack will rejoin the pack of vampire hunters in the present but at a terrible price. “Graveyard Smash” will result in the death of one of our favorite characters, Julius.

Who? Tragically the it is Julius (Aleks Paunovic) who will make the ultimate sacrifice to save Violet, Jack, Ivory and Axel so they may continue the attack on The Dark One.

The episode opens as Axel and Julius continued using the enchanted compass to locate Van Helsing sisters while Violet and Ivory are striving to stay ahead of Bathory and The Dark One. With the fantastic fight sequence in this episode (shown below_, as we move closer to an exciting series finale in early July of this year what will undoubtedly be filled with more action and fight scenes!

Van Helsing S5x07 Lukas and Shivani get their orders from Bathory The Oracle in the disembodied head

The episode opens with a scary sight, a disembodied head on the hood of a wrecked car ordering two people to get “The Van Helsing”. Interestingly, this reference is Violet only at this point since The Dark One and Bathory The Oracle are unaware of Jack’s return to the present which pinpoints an interesting limitation of Dracula’s powers.

The Oracle, who we know is Bathory converted to evil in the dark ages when she tried to help Jack, is commanding a pair of minions named Lukas (Ron Selmour) and Shavani (Rami Kahlon) to find Violet Van Helsing who is making her way east with Ivory following the clues left by Jack for them to follow.

The voice of Bathory orders them to chop Violet’s head off, threatening that if Lukas and Shivani do not succeed, including retrieving the Amulet that Violet has possession of which contains part of Dracula’s power that Jack drained from The Dark One in the past, they will face the wrath of Dracula,

Van Helsing S5x07 Violet and Ivory mourn and bond the loss of members of the Sisterhood

This obviously means death is the penalty Lukas and Shivani will pay if they do not cooperate. Lukas is angry, flinging the disembodied head onto the ground as he and Shivani proceed with their mission stating “What choice do we have”? The answer? None! “We will kill (Violet) the Van Helsing” says Lukas. This bit of information confirms that no one, including Dracula and Bathory The Oracle know that Jack found a way to return to the present.

Before proceeding to the east coast, Violet hears Ivory screaming. Thinking Ivory is in trouble, Violet sprints to her to help out. Upon arrival, Violet learns that Ivory is chanting a war cry warning for others in the Sisterhood, obviously in mourning for the last three of the Sisterhood who were slaughtered by the “Vanator” in “Sisterhunt”.

Violet asks why she is doing this since Ivory is the last surviving member of the Sisterhood. Ivory relates that she hopes that others may have survived and that she is not the last of the Sisterhood encouraging Violet to do her own war cry “For Jack”.

Both of our heroes do a war cry, despite being separated from Axel and Julius, and continue east to fight The Dark One.

We learn that Ivory and Violet are near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania after Ivory and Violet have been following the coordinates Jack embedded in Van Helsing family book on a page that had not been there previously.

Once in Philadelphia, Ivory and Violet find the location mentioned in the book. Upon arrival, they find themselves in an ancient cemetery that contains a gravestone about the United States Liberty Bell.

Violet says that this is meaningful clue from her childhood with Jack and that what they have found is obviously Jack sending them a message to them from the past.

Good news occurs since Julius and Axel, who have been following the enchanted compass, arrive at the church in a joyous reunion of vampire hunters! While inside the church, our heroes run Pastor Diaz (Jorge Montesi) who aims a shotgun at Julius’ back.

Pastor Diaz explains that he swore an oath to the Van Helsing family to protect the contents of church at all costs. Pastor Diaz sees that Violet has the sacred amulet and then welcomes the group to his church and agrees to help them in their search of the premises to find what they are seeking.

Searching the church at great length, our heroes, aided by Pastor Diaz open a tomb which contains a coffin with markings of Jack. When they pry open the coffin, they find Jack, who has apparently been sleeping waiting for them to arrive!

As our vampire hunters celebrate their reunion, Jack advises them that their next target should be Bathory.

Jack explains that she knew Bathory in Transylvania in the past and that they may be able to turn The Oracle back into “good” Bathory to help the vampire hunters.

Jack explains that if Bathory is able to finish reading the anti vampire incantations as she did to in Dalibor’s castle in the past, it may break the spell Dracula placed on Bathory.

Jack goes on to delineate that The Dark One had stopped Bathory from completing the incantations in the past and if they can succeed in the present, they may be able to weaken and kill The Dark One. Ivory says a Sisterhood prayer in the church to encourage everyone in their quest to defeat The Dark One!

Unfortunately, Lukas arrives at the church and begins an assault to capture Violet and the amulet for  The Dark One. Fortunately, our heroes have an ample supply of Doc’s (Rukiya Bernard) toxic to vampires bullets that are coated with the specially created anti vampire toxin.

As the battle is turning in our heroes favor, Bathory sends in a cloud of the poisonous orange dust to reinforce Lukas and his gang of vampires. Pastor Diaz tells the group to follow him to a secret escape tunnel that has an iron gate that will stop Lukas and his vampires.

Everyone gets to the secret tunnel in the church basement, Axel, Ivory and Jack make through the iron gate safety, but Julius and Violet have fallen behind fighting off the hoard of vampires. Violet helps Julius but the iron gate slams shut killing Pastor Diaz.

Van Helsing S5x07 Julius prepares to make the ultimate sacrifice

Julius and Violet are trapped inside while Axel, Ivory and Violet head for the exit. Violet notices that Julius has been wounded.

Julius tells Violet he has a cure that heal his wounds that he calls “me spinach”. This is formula that Doc gave him with a warning to never take more than a few drops or risk death.

Julius, knowing that he will need superhuman strength, shallows the entire bottle to protect Violet. Julius kills all the vampires including Lukas but is mortally wounded when Lukas embeds a golden crucifix in Julius’ chest.

Using his last bit of strength, Julius punches through Lukas’ chest grabbing his heart ends which is deposited on the floor with Violet looking on in horror. It is here that our great Julius, makes the ultimate sacrifice to protect Violet, dies.

The live tweets during this section of the broadcast went silent for a moment, then turned to shock as the truth set in when Jonathan Walker tweeted about Aleks Paunovic and his great role in Van Helsing (Click here to read the tweet).

“Graveyard Smash” ending sequence finds us with Axel, Jack, and Ivory who have left the church hear a war cry from Violet to mourn the loss of Julius who saved Violet. The group waits for Violet to catch up. Violet shares the sad news of Julius’ heroic death. With an look of dedication, our remaining heroes head to Washington DC to complete their plan to end the rule of Dracula The Dark One once and for all!

    As we approach the last episodes of Van Helsing, questions come to mind that Team WHR is certain will be addressed;

Will Vanessa Van Helsing reappear in the present to help her daughters defeat The Dark One?

Will all our remaining heroes, Ivory and Axel in specific, survive the forthcoming battle?

Will Bathory be saved by Jack, Violet and Vanessa?

Van Helsing season five series banner 2021

    Welcome back Helsingers and WormholeRiders!

The sixth episode of season five, “Carpe Noctis” takes us on a wild ride with Julius (Aleks Paunovic) and Axel (Jonathan Scarfe) as they encounter a gorgeous young woman named Nina Morgan (Ali Liebert). Nina knows Julius knows from 1984 well before The Rising occurred.

This all happens after Julius and Axel spent some time with Doc (Rukiya Bernard) who went on to find Jolene (Caroline Cave) and retire from vampire hunting. Doc healed Julius and created an elixir that can temporarily restore his healing powers. However, if too much of the healing elixir is taken, it can kill Julius.

Doc also delivered a hefty batch of “vampire bullets” to Julius and Axel. These cartridges are bullets that are infused with the chemicals from the toxic orange cloud that took away Julius’ power to heal in season four.

Van Helsing S5x06 Julius and Axel will face a test

The “vampire bullets” given to Axel and Julius are expressly designed to kill Dracula’s (Tricia Helfer) minions and perhaps Bathory The Oracle (Jesse Stanley). We cannot be certain, but they are unlikely to be effective on The Dark One herself.

The episode also takes places subsequent to Jack (Nicole Muñoz) being sent on a mission into the past by her mother Vanessa (Kelly Overton). Jack’s mission was to kill Dracula. Unfortunately, The Dark One instead escaped to the present.

Currently posing as the President in the White House, and after Violet and Ivory successfully escaped the military facilities located near Fort Collins, defeating the Vanator in “Sisterhunt”, Julius and Axel are planning on linking up with Violet (Keeya King) and Ivory (Jennifer Cheon Garcia) using the magic compass page from the Van Helsing book of secrets.

Before beginning our analysis of “Carpe Noctis”, we would like to pay homage to one of the wonderful things about the fifth and final season of Van Helsing; that the creators at Echo Lake Entertainment, Dynamic Television and Nomadic Pictures have taken great efforts to nice wrap the story arc of characters that the fans of the series have come to love and admire along the perfect path of adventure, science fiction and fantasy. In this way, special thanks from Team WHR goes out to all the writers, creators, cast and crews of the Van Helsing series who are professionally tying the story arc together very neatly for the fandom.

“Carpe Noctis” was written by Gorman Lee and directed by Jonathan Scarfe in an episode that takes us back to a time before the ‘Rising” to 1984 Chicago when Julius and Nina shared something together that no one has ever known about until now. Add all of this to the fact that Nina knows secrets about Julius’ past, his family, and that she has some secrets of her own, this makes “Seize The Night” (Carpe Noctis) an absolutely awesome episode that will end up testing Axel and Julius to the core of their relationship!

The episode opens with Axel and Julius in a black SUV stolen from load knows where. They are consulting the enchanted magic Van Helsing compass that Axel got from Vanessa in season four which indicates the direction to Violet’s location. While doing inventory and getting their bearings, Julius and Axel spot a group of President Dracula’s henchmen who have roped a what appears to be a victim who is fighting off the men!

Julius and Axel decide to help out, running over one of the masked menaces with their SUV while sharp shooter Axel kills the other. A nice visual effect sequence occurs as we witness the bullet in slow motion killing the troublemaker with healthy splashes of blood spurting when the last malcontents are dispatched by Axel, but not before Julius is stabbed and injured during the incident. Julius and takes a sip of the healing elixir glad they sent both of Dracula’s evil minions to hell to wait for The Dark One who will also (hopefully) arrive in hell later in season five.

The scene switches focus to the person they saved. It is here that we meet Nina Morgan and learn that Julius knows Nina from a past life as a vampire! Axel wants to kill Nina, but Julius, happy to see Nina again, convinces Axel that Nina will not harm them.

Julius believes that Violet can convert Nina back to human form when they find her. Nina does not attack, instead she tells them she was being hunted because she had disrespected Dracula, The Dark One.

Nina also figures out that Vanessa must have converted Julius and Axel back to human form and promises Axel that she will not kill him so long as Axel is with “her baby” (Julius). Axel says “you had better know what you are doing” and the three head to a place that Nina says is safe.

Van Helsing S5x06 Julius in 1984 Chicago

In a nice touch to set the tone of the episode, we segue in a fantastic flashback scene to Chicago in the past, 1984 to be specific, where we find Julius sporting an 80’s hair cut (or lack of one). We learn that Nina was a movie star many decades before in the 1920’s.

Julius and Nina obviously became lovers in 1984 and we also learn how Julius met Nina, that Nina refers to Julius as a “Bottom Feeder”. Nina shares her latest prey with Julius and takes a liking to the handsome fellow, recruiting him for her plan to setup a vampire empire.

Like many vampires before The Rising, Julius had been were merely surviving in the shadows and selectively feeding on humans when he could. Nina on the other hand is an apex predator who specializes in hunting human beings.

Julius and Nina are observed in a nearly empty movie theater watching her in a silent movie she is starring in while they feast on a the few patrons inside watching the silent film. Julius shares that his own pack of vampires turned against him.

Nina promises to return Julius to power as her king, with her as queen of the vampires to “Seize The Night” (Carpe Noctis). Of interest to trivia fans, there actually was a silent film star named Nina Morgan who appeared as herself in an episode of Groucho Marx’ “You Bet Your Life” television series in 1957.

To further set the tone of the time period, we are treated to a song contemporary to 1984, the top ten single “The Killing Moon” by Echo and the Bunnymen from their album “Ocean Rain” released in January of that year. “The Killing Moon” is also featured as background music in other parts of the episode and at the end of the episode just before the episode end credits and is included below for your enjoyment.

Van Helsing S5x06 Julius must make a decision
Julius must make a decision. Image courtesy SYFY

We also learn that Julius is living with his mother (Christina Jastrzembska) who we have seen before in Van Helsing as Mama dating back to 2016 when the series premiered. Mama does not trust Nina. Nina is trying to get Julius to leave his Mama and setup their vampire empire in Chicago.

All in all, the flashbacks fill in much of Julius’s back story and are beautifully accomplished. As we know, Nina’s and Julius’ vampire empire never happened, but something else did that we will discuss shortly about what did that ultimately separated Nina and Julius in 1984 and forces Julius to make a decision about Nina in the present.

We move back to the present with Nina asking a lot of questions and Axel does not like it. Julius intervenes giving Axel an ultimatum stating “she stays, end of discussion”. Nina reveals that she knows of a safe house shelter and that staying where they are is suicide since The Dark One and Bathory will figure out her troops have been killed. Nina provides some tactical information and Axel relents for the time being.

Van Helsing S5x06 Nina disappears on Julius

When they arrive at the so called safe house, Axel warns Julius “watch your back”. Over confident of Nina’s loyalty to him, Julius is stunned when Nina disappears to go feed on some people she has stashed at the location. Nina taunts Julius about his “Mama” in another flashback sequence when Nina claimed that Julius was merely a lapdog to a dying vampire.

It turns out the safe house location is a trap since The Dark One’s troops with Bathroy’s help find them there. Axel has had enough of this giving his friend Julius an ultimatum to get rid of Nina unless she provides some meaningful information about Dracula. Sensing that Axel is serious, Nina reveals what happened to her, and that The Dark One had been planning a large operation, When Nina refused to comply, Dracula had her and her clan of vampires hunted down and killed with Nina on the run ever since.

What is interesting about this revelation (that Nina refused an order) is that it reveals that Dracula does not have absolute power over her malcontent minions. Could this be as a result of Jack draining power from The Dark One in the past during the dark ages?

Van Helsing S5x06 Nina uses herself as bait
Nina uses herself as bait. Image courtesy SYFY

Nina, after providing some useful information to Julius and Axel, allows herself to be used as bait to draw Dracula’s troops into a killing zone. Axel kills The Dark One’s troops. Unfortunately, Bathory The Oracle locks in on the last trooper at the last second in time to identify their location.

In another excellent flashback just before the exciting episode concludes, we meet a young vampire hunter named Abby Van Helsing (Jen Araki) in 1984. This is Vanessa’s biological mother. Abby had hunted down Nina, Julius and Mama to kill them in 1984. This is what caused Julius and Nina to lose track of each other until the present time since Nina fled for her own life to avoid Abby.

As the episode winds down, Nina tries to convert Julius back to being a vampire, but ends up barfing up the blood since Vanessa had made him immune to vampire bites. Julius realizes that Nina is beyond hope and leaves her to Axel to deal with.

Van Helsing S5x06 Julius is sad about Nina
Julius is sad about Nina. Image courtesy SYFY

Axel catches Nina trying to steal the enchanted magic Van Helsing compass and pulling out his knife, uses force to get the magic compass back. It is assumed that Nina was killed, but we do not actually witness Axel doing the deed so he may have let her live.

In the final sequence, Julius with a sad look on his face, and Axel with a determined look on his face, are observed driving away from the mess to link up with Violet and Ivory who are seeking clues about Jack. The tune of “The Killing Moon” is heard playing in the background.

As we proceed to episode seven of the fifth and final season, make sure to tune in to watch the entire series on SYFY or watch on Netflix. In the meantime, we also suggest that you tune to SYFY at 10p/9c each week to watch the exciting season five concluding episodes. You will not be disappointed and will hopefully enjoy Van Helsing as much as we do!

    Welcome back Helsingers and WormholeRiders!

The fifth episode of season five, “Sisterhunt” takes us on an adventure with Violet (Keeya King) and members of Ivory’s (Jennifer Cheon Garcia) Sisterhood, specifically Zuma (Kat Ruston), Mira (Briana Skye) and Claire (Christina Meredith Lewall).

The episode takes places subsequent to Violet and Ivory who successfully escaped the military facilities located near Fort Collins, Colorado in “State of the Union”.

The Sisterhood is seeking to locate the whereabouts of Jack (Nicole Muñoz) and Vanessa (Kelly Overton), have they returned to the present time and where they may be located after being trapped by Dracula, The Dark One (Tricia Helfer) in the past.

Sadly, not all of our five feminine vampire hunter heroes will survive this journey into darkness and evil.

A truly frightening episode, “Sisterhunt” is not for the faint of heart. The scenes are artfully done and will literally scare the hell out of you with a return of the Vanator, one of Dracula’s secret weapons to track down, and kill enemies of The Dark One that was set loose in the previous episode, “State of the Union”.

“Sisterhunt” was written by Waneta Storms, features a fair amount of fighting, choreographed by Kimani Ray Smith, who also directed this exciting episode!

The episode opens with beautiful overhead cinematography of a wilderness area, a trademark of Van Helsing seen in many past episodes. This after Violet, Ivory and members of the Sisterhood had escaped from the military facilities outside Fort Collins, Colorado. Violet, while looking at the amulet of evil, has a flashback to Hansen (Neal McDonough), her father, who has said his entire goal was to protect his daughters Violet and Jack, made with eggs from Vanessa as was revealed in season four of Van Helsing.

Viewers will recall that Hansen sacrificed himself to save Violet from being taken over or consumed by Dracula, The Dark One. Our feminine band of vampire hunters, Violet, Ivory and the Sisterhood are at their camp sharing memorable on the first night away from Fort Collins. The Sisterhood are observed talking about how they were saved from being enslaved by Dracula as a result of the actions of Ivory, Jack and Violet.

Violet, Ivory, and the Sisterhood have to come to grips with the evil they seek to destroy. Each has been infected previously by the evil darkness that is Dracula.

Each must learn to deal with the evil located within themselves before they can ever hope to defeat Dracula, The Dark One.

Violet and Ivory, and the Sisterhood are on their way making their way to the White House to confront and hopefully Dracula. None are aware that Dracula has unleased the Vanator, an orb of evil that she sent out in search of the amulet containing the evil that Jack placed inside of it in the dark ages.

Claire is assigned to take first watch that night. She will not last the night! The evil Vanator finds Claire who is found the next morning with her heart carved out of her chest!

Frightened by this development, Violet, Ivory and the two members of the Sisterhood, drive to an abandoned house where they can set up a to consider what is happening.

Bad move! Rabid vampires find our feminine heroes, and attack.  Ivory and Violet, in a fun scene of fighting are able to save Zuma and Mira… for the time being.

Van Helsing S5x05 Violet and Ivory search for answers

Ivory and Violet lecture Zuma and Mira that they must be stronger if they are expected to survive. This will not be the case. Both Zuma and Mira  will fall victim to the Vanator before the episode is over. Zuma makes a huge mistake and heads down to the basement where the Vanator seizes her soul! Zuma is able to grab the amulet from Violet’s neck to free the evil. Fortunately, Ivory saves the day and chops off her head.

Next we observe Violet being affected by the Vanator. Violet thinks that she hears Jack’s voice and goes off alone to find Jack. Once again Ivory saves Violet who has seen this evil previously when Michaela summoned a Vanator. Violet who has succumbed to the Vanator, is directed to open the amulet. Ivory impales Violet with her knife driving the Vanator from Violet’s soul.

As we know, Violet can self heal so she is not killed. Mira freaks out and becomes the next victim of the Vanator who tricks Mira into hearing the crying of her own sisters that Ivory had killed years earlier.

Mira attempts to fight the evil but fails. Mira, knowing that chopping her head off will stop the Vanator, and promptly does so leaving us with only two survivors, Violet and Ivory!

Violet and Ivory know they are in trouble. Violet remembers something Ivory mentioned to her in the past life about how to defeat a Vanator; That they can be stopped whoever summons it. Violet opens the amulet against the advice of Ivory sucking Dracula’s evil into herself!

Violet is successful. After sucking the evil into her body, she orders the Vanator to self-destruct. Barely escaping with their lives, Ivory helps Violet puts the evil back up into the amulet.

The final scene finds Violet and Ivory loading up the truck to continue their journey. Both are concerned by the losses all have suffered; Jack, Vanessa, and the members of Sisterhood.

Determined to kill the evil of The Dark One, Violet is searching the pages of the Van Helsing family book for clues. Inside they find a drawing of Jack on pages that Violet swears were not there previously. The book documents that Jack was alive in 1778 !

Van Helsing S5x05 Jack is in the Van Helsing book

Even more exciting is that under the drawing of Jack, in the crest below her picture, Violet shows Ivory a series of coordinates for latitude and longitude. Violet,

familiar with such things from her college days, tells Ivory the coordinates are on the east coast of the United States. Our two lovely ladies make a promise to each other that they will find out what Jack left at the coordinates, and kill the evil, Dracula, The Dark One!

As we proceed to the sixth episode of the fifth and final season, make sure to tune in to watch the entire series on SYFY or watch on Netflix.
