We contacted video game guru Lord StarKillerXSX01 on X (Twitter) subsequent to last years MK1 30th Anniversary game release to discuss the Khaos Realms and the Kombat Pack that will be released on the 24th of this month.
The game play focus is on repelling the invaders who endangered Fire God Liu Kang’s New Era of peace, Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns expands the story campaign with an all-new cinematic narrative. When a perilous threat arrives from an alternate timeline, led by the ruthless Titan Havik whose sole mission is to throw the realms into khaos, Liu Kang must rally his champions and put faith in his enemies to defeat this grave danger. If they fail, the New Era will be reduced to anarchy. Lord StarKillerXSX01, a video game expert has played video games on all video game platforms dating back over 40 years shared with us that Khaos Reigns is a back story that adds to the mythology of Mortal Kombat.

MK1 Khaos Reigns adding exciting new characters to the growing roster of playable fighters, Kombat Pack 2 features returning kombatants Noob Saibot, voiced by Kaiji Tang; Cyrax, voiced by Enuka Okuma; and Sektor, voiced by Erika Ishii, all with unique backstories as part of the reimagined Mortal Kombat 1 Universe. As Sub-Zero, Bi-Han was the Lin Kuei’s ruthless Grandmaster, but his soul was stolen by Titan Havik to create the perfect henchman, Noob Saibot, who is now dedicated to fomenting anarchy. Born into the Zaki, one of the Lin Kuei’s many sub-clans, Cyrax became a martial arts prodigy with an independent streak and untamed desire to serve the clan on her terms, or not at all. Growing up immersed in Lin Kuei culture under the tutelage of her parents, Sektor becomes a master armorer, skilled warrior, and Sub-Zero’s most trusted lieutenant, committed to advancing the clan’s future at all costs.

Kombat Pack 2 also brings a new batch of guest fighters into the mix with Ghostface, the recurring identity donned by antagonists from the Scream horror movie franchise, voiced by Roger L. Jackson; T-1000, the liquid metal-based Terminator and deadly cybernetic assassin from the Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) film featuring the voice and likeness of actor Robert Patrick; and Conan the Barbarian, the towering warrior from the Conan the Barbarian (1982) film featuring the likeness of actor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Additionally, Animalities, the fan-favorite finishing moves will be returning as a free content update for all Mortal Kombat 1 owners. Allowing characters to morph into their spirit animal to annihilate defeated opponents, Animalities can be performed by all playable fighters and will be available in conjunction with the Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns release. Furthermore, all owners of Mortal Kombat 1 will receive a free MK 95 Scorpion character skin, inspired by the original Mortal Kombat (1995) film.

Welcome Back La Brea and Wormhole Science Fiction Lovers!
As our article title and the third season La Brea poster header indicated all season long, is this an end of an era in scripted science fiction series on major network television channels like NBC?
Do such science fiction series, subsequent to lower ratings as compared to police, fire, and hospital scripted programs (which are flourishing), spell the end of the science fiction genre on major network channels in the United States?
Unfortunately, this would appear to be the case for new science fiction series that could be broadcast on the United States television networks ABC, CBS or NBC.
What this means is that although science fiction on major United States based network channels may be at the End Of Life (EOL) for now, the science fiction television genre will live on to be loved by tens of millions of viewers as evidenced by recent science fiction series successes such as Fallout, Foundation, For All Mankind, Outer Range, Halo, The Mandalorian and other new content being created for and by streaming television services!
The Forty Year Back Story:
ABC Network (now part of Disney) was a player in the modern science fiction broadcast world subsequent to their highly successful Lost series from 2004 to 2010 with 121 episodes. After a notable original V mini-series success on NBC in 1983, V The Final Battle in 1984 and a shortened nineteen episode weekly series on NBC that left science fiction fans with huge cliffhanger, ABC picked up the franchise. ABC subsequently left the science fiction genre after a two season run of a reboot of V Series from 2009 to 2011 that also disappointed fans who had hoped the story arc would be completed in a third season.
City On The Edge Of Forever. Image courtesy Paramount Plus
CBS Network had never been a significant science fiction content producer until it picked up the Star Trek franchise now broadcast on the Paramount Plus streaming service.
Likewise, the CW Network (originally UPN – The United Paramount Network until 2006), like SYFY, is actually a cable channel that produced significant science fiction related content including The Secret Circle (2011), The Vampire Diaries (2009), Arrow (2012), iZombie (2015), Legends of Tomorrow (2016), Riverdale (2017) and the popular Superman & Lois (2021) entering its fourth and final season soon.
With very few exceptions, notably the SYFY Channel in the United States (a cable channel that is owned by NBC), there are few relatively new science fiction scripted series on network television remaining.
These include as The Ark headed for a second season and comedic science fiction series Resident Alien (hopefully pending renewal for a fourth season).
Now in 2024, virtually all of the other recent science fiction series are now exclusively only on streaming platforms.
Streaming Roots and How We Arrived Here:
The roots of successful streaming programs can be said to have arguably begun in earnest in May 2007 with the Sanctuary web series first broadcast on the Internet. The Sanctuary web based series was so successful it actually crashed the Internet servers on launch day. I was peripherally involved in a support role for fans to interact with the series star Amanda Tapping while running a popular website dedicated to supporting the Stargate franchise prior to the launch of WormholeRiders News Agency in 2008. Sanctuary, produced in conjunction with Space Channel of Canada (now known as CTV SciFi), was such a success that the web series was picked up by SYFY (then the SciFi channel) that ran four seasons from 2009 to 2001.
The Invaders Image courtesy ABC
SciFi began broadcasting in September 1992 with the hit movie Star Wars Episode IV (The New Hope) as its first broadcast.
SciFi had much early success over their early years which can be attributed to broadcasting re-runs of iconic science fiction programs such as the early episodes of Dr. Who, The Prisoner, The Invaders, Star Trek the Original Series (TOS) and many various fan favorite science fiction movies.
SYFY’s first original hit series was the short lived one season dystopian space opera Mission Genesis in 1997. Then came First Wave co-produced with the Space Channel broadcast from 1998 to 2001.
This was followed by the now classic Farscape series that was broadcast from 1999 to 2003. Farscape was co-produced with Nine Network.
SciFi then invested heavily in additional science fiction scripted series beginning when it acquired the rights in 2001 to broadcast Stargate SG-1 owned by MGM Studios (Now known as Amazon MGM Studios).
Stargate SG-1 was originally on Showtime from 1997 to 2001, then continued to be broadcast on SYFY until 2007 for a combined total of ten episode years totaling 214 episodes. SYFY then added the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica in 2004, and Stargate Atlantis in 2005. MGM released two follow on direct to DVD Stargate SG-1 movies in 2008 that SYFY also broadcast. Stargate Universe began in 2009 and in 2010 SYFY created Caprica, a popular Battlestar prequel series that sadly only lasted one season.

SYFY also became well known for their weekly wild and often wacky science fiction movies for which it became famous in their own right.
The wildly successful weekly movie series generated huge followings of millions of viewers every week that culminated in the success of the Sharknado movies (1 to 6) series that concluded in 2018.
Close competitors in the with superb science fiction content in the twenty-first century were the Turner Network Television (TNT) Network and its fabulous Falling Skies series with five seasons broadcast from 2011 to 2015.
TNT’s also broadcast their subsequently successful program called The Last Ship, a dystopian action science fiction drama series that ran for five seasons from 2014 to 2018.
The Fox Network was a strong contributor with their original The X-Files series from 1993 to 2002, Sliders in 1998, Firefly in 2002, and the iconic fabled Fringe series produced at Warner Brothers Television that ran for five years and 100 episodes from 2008 to 2013. Fox and the fascinating time travel mystery series Alcatraz was not renewed after one season in 2011 despite strong ratings when the network decided to renew Fringe for a fifth season instead. Fox left the genre after NexT rogue AI series in 2020 which ran for only one season. Fox Network television was subsequently acquired by Disney which has its hands full with Marvel and Star Wars streaming series.
The Beginning of The End:
The decline of science fiction series like La Brea on network television channels can be traced back to its roots on December 03, 2009 when telecommunications giant Comcast announced its intent to acquire mass media company NBC Universal from General Electric corporation amid concerns at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of potential negative effects within the vertical entertainment industry since Comcast was also heavily involved in cable television and internet services in many United States media markets.
Image by Mark Taylor courtesy NBC
On March 19, 2013 General Electric divested itself from NBC giving Comcast sole ownership and a free hand to reduce employees located within duplicate internal divisions. Through this acquisition, Comcast gained ownership of the National Broadcasting Company (NBC), the film studio Universal Pictures, cable channels such as SYFY, Universal Parks & Resorts. Among other assets owned by NBC Universal was the USA Network and the E! Channel who often ran large entertainment convention events at San Diego Comic-Con, WonderCon in San Francisco and Anaheim as well as at New York ComicCon at the Javits Center.
Image by Greg Gayne courtesy NBC
SYFY reigned supreme for many years via their continued strong interest in scripted science fiction series (many were acquired and developed with Canadian UK network partners) subsequent to beginnings of the merger mania in 2009.
These fabulous programs included Sanctuary, Warehouse 13, Eureka, Helix, Haven, Alphas, Lost Girl, Merlin, Defiance, Continuum, 12 Monkeys, Dark Matter, Killjoys and The Expanse. Their last major five year successes concluded with the supernatural science fiction thrillers Van Helsing, Wynonna Earp, and The Magicians.
The cracks in the formula became apparent when SYFY, out of nowhere, stunned viewers when it dumped The Expanse despite rave reviews and being the highest rated science fiction program in 2018.
Fortunately The Expanse was picked up by Amazon Studios, running on Amazon Prime for three more seasons on the streaming service with success and high praise.
Image by Mark Taylor courtesy NBC
In 2018, the pressure on broadcast networks became evident when a fabulous science fiction series on the NBC’s USA Network named Colony became a casualty. The NBC and Comcast merger “Reductions In Force” (RIF) became known as “the night of the long knives” which impacted the majority of staffers, employees and publicists whose careers ended abruptly with what many believe were unanticipated layoffs. Another great NBC series, Manifest, was not renewed but was saved by streaming service Netflix.
Image by Greg Gayne courtesy NBC
Great SYFY series such as Primeval New World, Ghost Wars, Incorporated, and Day of The Dead were subsequently not renewed after single seasons, likely a result of terminating publicist marketing employee teams in “the night of the long knives” that were needed for continued series success. Krypton, based on the DC Comics Superman franchise, made it to two years to 2019 but effectively ended cable channel SYFY’s dominance as undisputed king of science fiction series as an NBC network affiliate. SYFY original programming suffered as a result. Alien Nation and horror based Chucky remain as the only multi-season survivors.
However, all these events actually jump started the streaming services movement which can be traced in large part to huge success in 2015 with a The Man In the High Castle broadcast on Amazon Prime Video for four seasons concluding in 2019.
This factor was repeated with the Warner Brothers Discovery merger last year that cancelled a completed season four production of Snowpiercer ready to be broadcast on TNT (the fourth season now will broadcast by AMC in 2025), and Westworld which had been renewed for a fifth season on HBO but will not be produced after the merger that produced the Warner Discovery conglomerate. With talk of further consolidation in the entertainment industry looming in the future, all this could mean the end of ABC, CBS, or NBC network channel science fiction series in the United States.
Since that time a few months ago, new science fiction series broadcast on major network television channels ABC, CBS and NBC are few and far between. After NBC chose not to renew a superb series named Debris with good ratings created by J.H. Wyman of Fringe after broadcasting only thirteen episodes in season one ending in late May 2021, the beloved La Brea time travel science fiction series on NBC may be the last major network television effort in that regard, at least for the time being.
The Future of Science Fiction Television is Streaming:
The Mandalorian Image courtesy Disney Plus
Streaming services accelerated during the transition subsequent to the entire Star Wars and Star Trek franchises moving to streaming platforms when Disney purchased Lucas Film.
CBS, broadcast owner of Star Trek franchise launched Paramount Plus, the renamed CBS All Access streaming service.
Star Wars series such as The Mandalorian, Obi Wan Kenobi, The Book of Bobba Fett, and Andor have been a success on Disney Plus. Star Trek series including Discovery, Picard, and Strange New Worlds have been huge successes on the Paramount Plus streaming service.
All of this begs the question:
Will ever be another science fiction series to be launched on a major network channel in the United States?
Or is the science fiction genre to only find life only on streaming services in the future? We shall see.
In the meantime, enjoy the wildest moments of La Brea courtesy of NBC included below.
We here at Team WHR believed that there is much more to this superb La Brea story remaining to be told. Unfortunately, “The Road Home, Part 2” is the finale for this terrific time travel science fiction adventure series. Although we had been hoping for at least five full seasons of the La Brea series, as the old adage often applied to television programming saying goes; “Don’t Cry and Be Sorry it’s Over, Be Happy Because It Happened”, and we are because the series ended without cliffhangers!
On that note, we waited to post this analysis hoping that series creator David Appelbaum would be able to place La Brea with one of the major streaming services. As of this post, that does not seem to be happening at this time, but will remain hopeful that may occur in the future after we publish this feature article.
“The Road Home, Part 2” finale aired subsequent “The Road Home, Part 1” after a remaining character named Helena (Emily Wiseman) surfaced in the episode “Fire Storm” where we learned that Helena is Gavin Harris’s (Eoin Macken) half sister. We also learned that Time Travel was invented by their father who finished setting up the technology in 1965 using modern 2020’s computer technology to create jet aircraft that in the end help save our heroes.
Image by Greg Gayne courtesy NBC
The good news of La Brea is that the series producers and creator ensured the series would conclude on a happy note creating an enjoyable ending for their fans. Eve (Natalie Zea) and her family of Gavin, Josh (Jack Martin), and Izzy (Zyra Gorecki), in fact all the main characters including Sam Velez (Jon Seda) and his daughter Riley (Veronica St. Clair), Scott Israni (Rohan Mirchananey), Veronica Castillo (Lily Santiago), Lucas Hayes (Josh McKenzie), Judah (Damien Fotiou), and even Petra (Asmara Feik) daughter of deceased villain Maya Schmidt (Claudia Ware), all safely make it back safely to 2021 either using the prototype Time Travel jet aircraft or utilized a wormhole portal to return home to their own time, most likely closing once and for all after everyone returned to 2021.
In the end, Ty Coleman (Chiké Okonkwo) decided to stay in 10,000 BC with his wife Paara (Tonantzin Carmelo) to live out their lives. Levi Delgado (Nicholas Gonzales) sadly passed away sacrificing himself to save the others.
We never learned the fate of Silas (Mark Lee) and other characters in 10,000 BC. Likewise, Leyla (Edyll Ismail) daughter of Ruth (Chantelle Jamieson) never consummated her relationship with Izzy due to the shortened third season.
Lastly, the La Brea series finale reminded me of the famous two part Stargate SG-1 episode “Moebius part 2” where the main characters went back in time to fix the future. The end result was that Stargate SG-1 main characters lived as themselves in ancient Egypt as a method to ensure that the future characters never had to go back in time in the first place so they could fish at Jack’s pond that had no fish before Moebius but did have fish when the future characters ended the eighth season knowing they had changed the future.
Therefore, speaking of endings, there are a La Brea few items that were not addressed in the finale: Did Gavin destroy the trouble making Time Travel computer chip in the jet aircraft? Did everyone get back to the correct time at the end (pun intended)? Did the original wormhole ever occur in the pilot episode if Gavin destroyed the time chip technology after returning to 2021? Did the finale cleanly avoid all time paradoxes of having two of several main characters that existed at the same time (again pun intended)?
In closing our analysis of La Brea, one of our favorite science fiction series by the way, we wonder If Gavin did not destroy the time chip after they all returned after the wormhole occurred in 2021, since the items above were never really addressed, what could happen in the future?
Although unlikely, It remains a long shot possibility that a La Brea series could return in the future, perhaps on a streaming service, so everyone can learn more about Gavin’s father in 1965, and the fate of humankind in the future.
We certainly hope that to be the case!

One of the great games recently released in late 2023 is Mortal Kombat 1, also known as MK1. The release coincides with the thirtieth anniversary of the series of fighting video games originally developed by Midway Games in 1992 and the original Mortal Kombat movie released in 1995.
Mortal Kombat 1 is a 2023 fighting game developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Brothers Games on September 19, 2023. MK1 is the twelfth main installment in the Mortal Kombat series, and serves as its second reboot after 2011’s Mortal Kombat. The game was released on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S.

We contacted video game guru Lord StarKillerXSX01 on X (Twitter) subsequent to the games release. Lord StarKillerXSX01 is a video game expert and a long time “gamer” who has played video games on all video game platforms dating back to the earliest fond memories of the Atari 2600 home video console and other classic platforms.
Subsequent to discussion, LordStarkillerXS01 indicated that he planned to play the MK1 video game campaign and to our delight he agreed to conduct a review of the new MK1 video game. We include his MK1 review below for your enjoyment and edification about this fun video game that has swept the gaming world since it’s release with sales of three million copies as of this week!
The press room was filled with excitement, packed with more news outlets than could be serviced due to the SAG AFTRA strike that cancelled most Press Rooms during SDCC 2023.
This overcrowding resulted in the limited time allotted and in some cases not being able to interview some Press Room celebrities. Fortunately, we were granted interviews with Ed Boon, Thiago Gomes and Yuri Lowenthal of MK1. We include their SDCC 2023 interviews below for your enjoyment.

I was really looking forward to playing the MK1 Campaign, and it did not disappoint. The MK1 story is very interesting because it is not only a reboot, but also a sequel to MK11 (2019). Without giving away too much, MK1 has Raiden as a farmer, and Fire God Liu Kang is Earthrealm’s protector in the MK1 timeline, but things will change in a surprising way later in the story.
Image courtesy Ed Boon on X
Many MK favorites such as Johnny Cage, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Shang Tsung appear in the main story. But there are many others like Kung Lao, Mileena, Smoke, and Sindel.
The MK1 cinematics could be skipped, but for me, they added a much better dimension to the game and were very well presented and acted. The MK1 graphics and sound were very well done.
The character models were realistic looking, along with the facial expressions syncing up to the voice-actor dialogs.
MK1 has a Super Meter, that once full, will allow the fighter to do a powerful, gruesome, and bloody attack on their opponent. This highlights some great looking MK1 graphics.
I would recommend playing MK1 with a headset to get the most out of the games great cinematics, fighting, and environment sounds. It was very obvious to me that NetherRealm Studios devoted a lot of attention to the details with the MK1 sound capture. Although the controls felt a little slow at first, as the story progressed, they felt more fluid and responsive, especially when doing multiple combos.
With 5 Campaign difficulties ranging from Very Easy, Easy, Medium, Hard, or Very Hard, the Campaign can be enjoyed many different ways. Replayability? Absolutely yes!

One of the most beloved science fiction television franchise shows in all television entertainment history is Babylon 5. Returning to San Diego Comic-Con on July 22, 2023 with a new movie named “Babylon 5: The Road Home”, series creator J. Michael Straczynski and Director by Matt Peters were available for Press Room interviews thanks to the great team effort over Warner Brothers bringing Babylon 5 back to our screens!
J. Michael Straczynski and Matt Peters image courtesy WormholeRiders
Science fiction admirers fondly recall that Babylon 5 had five successful seasons running from 1993 to 1998, plus five movies (now 6 with Babylon 5: The Road Home) that began with a television movie called The Gathering which launched the series in 1993. Crusade (1999) was a much anticipated sequel spin off of the Babylon 5 series that was filmed and aired before production on the actual new series (that was never made) began. For series continuity, this next film should be viewed first. In the Beginning (1998) is actually a prequel to Babylon 5 taking place between 2243 and 2248 prior to any of the events depicted during the series or follow on movies. This film is laden with spoilers, so it is strongly suggested viewing after watching the first four seasons of Babylon 5.
Babylon 5 movies were very popular after the series ended and remain so today with millions of fans around the world. The films captivated the fans attention beginning with Thirdspace (1998) featuring a timeline that fit in between the fourth and fifth seasons taking place in the year 2261 sometime around the eighth or ninth episode of season four. River of Souls (1998) takes place in 2263 occurring between season five episodes “Objects at Rest” and “Sleeping in Light.” Finally, A Call to Arms (1999) also takes place between episodes in the year 2266. Followed a few years later with Legend of the Rangers To Live and Die in Starlight (2002). These Babylon 5 movie adventures were subsequent to the series conclusion in 1998 and was a pilot for a spin-off series that wasn’t picked up. In 2007 The Lost Tales was well received as a Babylon 5 mini-series delighting fans with a story arc that occurred in the year 2271 on the tenth anniversary of the Interstellar Alliance and was the last Babylon 5 film released prior to 2023. We can attest to the fans we have talked with who have been eager for more Babylon 5 the past 16 years, and now the dream has come true!
We are very grateful to Warner Brothers for producing this film, to J. Michael Straczynski for giving us more Babylon 5 in 2023, the actors and everyone who is involved in making this! We also send thanks to Jamie Falkowitz Public Relations for making these interviews possible. Therefore, with such an epic legendary science fiction history inherent in Babyon 5, spanning thirty years on our screens and echoing in our minds, it was an honor to interview J. Michael Straczynski and Matt Peters. We include their Babylon 5: The Road Home Press Room interviews below for your enjoyment.
A legend in the entertainment industry, as well as a creator and writer of his own comic book series called Rising Stars, J. Michael Straczynski, creator of Baylon 5, is also very well known for work in movies and television including Sense8 (2015), World War Z (2013), Underworld: Awakening (2012), Thor (2011), Changeling (2008), Jeremiah (2002), and for Babylon 5 (1993). Many have enjoyed Joe’s creativity since he began his career writing for the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (1983) and She Ra Princess of Power (1985) series characters that remain popular to this very day!
Now with the Babylon 5: The Road Home accomplishment, and with fans wanting more, we must recall his oath to the Babylon 5 fandom on the prospect of future Babylon 5 feature film projects: “The only thing I can say without equivocation is that when that day comes, as the rights-holder, I will make darned sure that it’s done right, because I’d rather have no B5 movie than one that doesn’t live up to what fans and I myself would want to see. To that end…I can wait.”

This year’s event was quite the experience. Having attended San Diego Comic-Con since 2012, I can attest that it has always been the most significant, wildest, and most exciting show. Even during the pandemic, when everything went virtual, Comic-con remained a beacon of hope for us who love this event. But thankfully, in 2022, the convention came back in full force and was better than ever before.
However, I learned that major studios like Marvel, Disney, and HBO (now called Max) wouldn’t attend the 2023 convention. Initially, I thought it wouldn’t be an issue, but then the writer’s and actor’s strikes happened, and many people thought it spelled doom for Comic-Con. Nevertheless, I remained hopeful because I knew that the original incarnation of Comic-Con was all about comics and always will be. Even if some parts of the convention are affected by strikes or other issues, we will always have a love for comics that brings us together.
Images by Lori of TeamWHR
Despite the recent SAG/AFTRA strike, some actors could still attend because they had other projects that fell outside the strike’s parameters. One such actor was recent Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis. She was promoting her upcoming comic book called Mother Nature. The line to get in the room was long, and I was worried I wouldn’t be able to get in.
There were about ten seats left in the way back. I was one of the lucky ones to get those precious final seats. We were all so relieved to get in as we waited over an hour. It was worth it. The panel and Jamie Lee were great. I had a great time. It was fantastic to see Jamie Lee venturing into the comic world and embracing that genre.
Things were different at Comic-Con regarding entertainment panels, and that’s okay. The megalithic Hall H was used, but not as much as it typically is. Usually, Warner Brothers, Netflix, HBO, and other studios have panels for their most popular shows and movies in Hall H, where attendees often camp out for days in advance to get a front-row seat. That was missing this year, albeit there were a few panels in Hall H, but nothing like in the past. In fact there were no Sunday panels in Hall H or many of the other huge ballrooms. As a result, the convention floor for exhibits, artists, vendors, and other panel rooms, particularly the smaller ones, were a lot busier with all the people who usually would be in panels in Hall H, Ballroom 20, or the Indigo Ballroom at the Hilton Bayfront hotel choosing other options.
The vendors exhibit hall floor was busier this year, and lines were capped quicker than usual. Merchandise was being bought faster, which was terrific for the vendors counting on the attendees to buy their wonderful wares. In fact, several vendors sold out and had to bring in additional stock. It also gave independent artists more exposure as well. More people on the floor meant more people venturing to “Artists Alley” to discover the newest art and their fabulous offerings.
I saw more people at the comic book vendor’s booths this year, which was beautiful. Collectibles were always part of the fold when it came to Comic-Con. You can find pretty much anything that interests a collector. Two of my favorites were a Pee Wee Herman figurine and the robot from Bad Robot Productions.
The bigger booths were missing from the floor: Netflix, ABC Disney, HBO, Marvel, and Warner Brothers to name but a few.
Sideshow is always a highlight and one of the busiest booths on the floor. I always loved seeing the incredible statutes displayed at that booth.
Instead, this year Sideshow had its own virtual convention that featured its most popular and newest statues. I hope that they will return next year.
With Sideshow not a part of the convention floor this year, that gave way to other vendors to take its place. Lego had paid homage to the Blockbuster video stores we all loved in the 80s and set up a “Brickbuster” store on the convention floor. Funko and Mondo again were the most significant booths on the floor, and lines there were hours.
Thankfully Star Wars had their own booth since they had no panels this year. Mattel Creations, Entertainment Earth, Super 7, Dark Horse Comics, and IDW all had their booths running as usual, making the floor feel like home. Even though Sideshow was not present, there are always fun statues to see. One of my favorite vendors is Elite Creature Collectibles; their busts are incredible and very life-like. The one I loved the most was the bust of Abe Sapien from the Hellboy movies.
Smaller panels featuring comic artists were highlighted and focused despite needing more significant panels. I went to the John Romita, Jr panel, and it was terrific. He and his wife Kathy held court and discussed his career and famous father. I had heard of Romita (both Senior and Junior) through friends of mine that are comic book nerds.
I had a great time in the panel and learned more about how comic books get published and what an incredible life he has had, and the dedication it takes to do what he does. The endless hours, Kathy chimed in that she should write a book about being the wife of a comic book artist.
I also sat in on a Conan the Barbarian panel with editor Matt Murray, Jim Zub, and Fred Malmberg all of whom are associated with this superb new comic graphic novel.
The panel was produced by by Titan Comics and Heroic Signatures who are launching a new monthly Conan the Barbarian graphic novel series.
It was a fun panel that I really enjoyed!
As I have a good friend who is a die-hard Conan the Barbarian lover, I learned a bit more about the famous sword-wielding hero that is not apparent in the movie renditions of this famous character.
The Conan the Barbarian graphic novel creators revealed that Solomon Kane will return to the fold. I know some people will be happy to hear that. Below the Conan trailer, we include a fun interview courtesy of Fanbase Press.
Due the cancellation of many panels this year, I could also explore the convention floor and find more vendors I would have commonly overlooked. As with all conventions of significant size, everything will have pros and cons (pun intended).
One panel I could attend this year, which I unfortunately missed last year, was for Stern Pinball. I had the pleasure of interviewing Jody Dankberg about the company and any future endeavors the previous year. It was much fun, and they let us know that Venom was the newest addition to their comic book pinball machines. I did not get a chance to play the pinball machines like last year, but I have played many of their machines in the past, and they are always a lot of fun.
The other wonderful thing I love about San Diego Comic-Con is that there are always things to do, whether in the Convention Center itself or at the Marriott Marquis, outside behind the Convention Center, at Petco Park or just enjoying the always outstanding Cosplay.
There is always something to do for comics, entertainment and games fans for all visitors to San Diego. Thankfully the weather this year was not as hot as it usually is. It was a little bit odd with light rain in the weather, but everything was still fun, nonetheless.
Image courtesy Gaslamp Quarter Dot Org
Also, the great thing about San Diego is that the historic Gaslamp Quarter or district that always has themed restaurants during Comic-Con. You will find restaurants modeled after Bob’s Burgers, or Interview with the Vampire. I went to one modeled after Mooby’s from the Kevin Smith movies. I went there with a few friends, and we had burgers and beer, and it was decorated in that fashion of the film, plus there was also merchandise. So it was nice to escape the Convention Center for some time. But again, the Gaslamp Quarter always has themed restaurants which is so much fun!
The activation’s, as always, had long lines this year, but that’s par for the course regarding Comic Con. The most significant activation this year was the Jurassic Park 30th Anniversary which featured the top scenes from this iconic movie. We include a fabulous video of the exciting experience courtesy of IGN below for your enjoyment.
With expanded coverage as compared to SDCC 2022, over the four days of Comic-Con events, located across from the convention center near the entrance to the GaslampQuarter, Quantum Leap fans could “leap” into the terrific television worlds of “Law & Order,” “SVU” and “Organized Crime,” “The Voice” and “Chucky” to help stabilize the timelines with the help of the “Quantum Leap” time travel team!
SDCC is always wonderful to experience. Just be prepared for long lines in the sun and always take along lots of sunscreen and plenty of water to stay hydrated. Another fun experience was strolling through Lazlo’s garden from What We Do In The Shadows. We include a cool video below about this fun experience courtesy of Through the Lens of Lady Kay B.
However, it was a shock to the system for many people who are usually at Comic-Con for the TV shows or movies coming down the pipeline. People adjusted well, and they could have a good time no matter what. They could still enjoy themselves even without the big panels, no matter what. I know I did. And you learn new things about comic books, games, Cosplay that you didn’t even know about, and that’s what’s always fun about these conventions. You find new and exciting things to be happy about. Overall, it was a fun time, and I look forward to attending Comic-Con again in 2024, regardless of whether it has the studio’s presence.
Lastly, I’m in solidarity with both the writers and actors as I am both in real life and will pursue a career later in my life as a director. I know there was talk about the strikes; there was concern about the future of Comic Con and what would happen if the strikes continued. I hope you enjoyed this article and will take comfort in knowing that Comic-Con has been going strong for 50-plus years and doesn’t plan on slowing down anytime soon!

On July 22, 2022 Team WHR was very excited as we prepared to visit the Paper Girls on Prime Video Press Room. Paper Girls is a science fiction series we have waited six years years to learn about after the Comic Book version received the Eisner Award for Best New Series in 2016! The comic book series began publication on October 7, 2015 and concluded on July 31, 2019 after thirty hit issues, shortly before the television series began production at Amazon and Legendary Studios.
Image by Kenn for WormholeRiders News Agency
Originally published by Image Comics, the Paper Girls has been brought to our screens on Prime Video by the comic book creators Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang, the Eisner Award winning series is a fabulous science fiction time travel production starring Fina Strazza as KJ Brandman, Camryn Jones as Tiffany Quilkin, Sofia Rosinsky as McKenzie ‘Mac’ Coyle, and Riley Lai Nelet as Erin Tieng as the twelve year old Paper Girls who are catapulted in time from 1988 to 2019, back to 1999 and then 1974 to face extreme danger to their lives, and those that they encounter in time.

Our heroes find themselves caught in a temporal war between two factions that seek to control the fate of humankind throughout time.
A shadowy group known as the Old Watch, who controls the technology over all time periods, operates from apparent safety, controlling time from being changed in the past from a distant future. The Old Watch seeks to avoid any changes in the timelines of the past that could adversely impact their dominance over time.
Image by Kenn for WormholeRiders News Agency
The Old Watch is hunting down a group that is seeking to overthrow their iron fist control over time against known as the Standard Time Fighters Underground or STF Underground who we meet via a humble and friendly, but seemingly less than formidable character named Larry Radakowski portrayed by veteran actor Nate Corddry.
The STF Underground as a rebel force is seeking to subvert the Old Watch paradigm consisting at first of Adina Porter who stars as the Prioress who we see in six of the eight episodes, and Jason Mantzoukas, known as Grandfather, a rather nasty character who appears in the last three episodes.

During our time in the Press Room, courtesy of Wolf-Kasteler Public Relations, we were delighted by the enthusiasm of the four young actors and the creators.
Each actor in the Paper Girls series is excellent in their roles. Each of these wonderful actors shared details about how they learned details about the 1980’s and the late 1990’s, how excited they were to share their adventures with viewers, how they were hired for their roles.
We note the similarities to the The End Of Eternity and fringe (discussed below), that the creators were familiar with, and how they all look forward to a potential second season of Paper Girls on Prime Video!
Image by Kenn for WormholeRiders News Agency
Unfortunately, after spending truly quality time with the cast and creators, we learned subsequent to our Press Room Paper Girls visit that our HD video camera’s high definition external microphone had failed causing the loss of all forty plus minutes of audio on the video. We were gutted to learn of this development.
We therefore include an outstanding interview segment with the cast from Screen Rant below for your enjoyment.
Back to The Future, The Time Machine, The End Of Eternity, Fringe and Paper Girls:
Unlike the Back to the Future movie series where meeting one’s self in an alternate timeline could destroy the fabric of the universe, our journey with the Paper Girls heroes goes across time from 1988 where we meet older versions of the Paper Girls. Fortunately, no such universe destruction occurs. Specifically, we meet Ali Wong who portrays the adult version of Erin, Sekai Abenì as the adult Tiffany, Delia Cunningham as the adult KJ, and Kellee Stewart as Dr. Carol Quilkin, who we learn is the inventor of time travel utilized by the Old Watch. We also meet various members of the Paper Girls families in the future timelines that affect the final outcome of events.
Purchase The End of Eternity by Isaac Asimov at Amazon!
Readers and entertainment viewers have always enjoyed time travel adventures beginning with The Time Machine written by H.G. Wells in 1895 and popularized in the 1960 movie version directed by the legendary George Pal. In this classic, the protagonist escapes the past to save the future of humanity enslaved as breeding stock for the evil Morlock’s who eat them!
Paper Girls story arc is somewhat leveraged from the classic science fiction masterpiece novel The End of Eternity by Isaac Asimov that was published in 1955. Although it was attempted to be brought to the movie screen several times, with protagonists similar to the STF, The End Of Eternity never was produced either a movie or television program.
Instead, a hit television series, Fringe (2008 to 2013) by Bad Robot Productions, produced at Warner Brothers, envisioned a future where a nefarious group known as The Observers made changes in the past to ensure their own survival in the future. This including bringing their own temporal agents and supplies from the future, traveling through time to enslave humankind in the present.
Click to learn about Fringe
The Paper Girls group Old Watch is somewhat similar to The Observers in Fringe and The Eternal’s in The End of Eternity that used Time Kettles to travel back to the past to make major to minor adjustments in the timeline to keep things the way that The Eternal’s wanted them to be. In fact, the final scenes of Paper Girls show what appear to be Time Kettles, or Time Ships that travel to the past and the future.
Years later, Isaac Asimov wove The End Of Eternity story arc into his broader Foundation Series by hinting in the Foundation’s series of books, set in a universe where Eternity had once existed, but was destroyed by one of The Eternals (Harlan from The End of Eternity). This led to an all human galaxy without time travel that ties out with the protagonist Harlan’s final actions in The End of Eternity. Fringe follows a similar good ending where evil members of The Observers are defeated.
Paper Girls Across Time:
In Paper Girls, the story arc generally follows the concepts from the terrific thirty episode comic book series, but with modifications that do a nice job of adapting the concept to the small screen. In season one, we find a similar conundrum where our heroes get caught up in the temporal war.
Near the end of the series they are taken aboard the Old Watch Time Ship controlled by Grandfather to have their memories erased, and to be subsequently reinserted into their past lives as if nothing had ever happened in the first place. However, our heroes memories are not erased and they end up in a time period before they were born!
Without revealing major spoilers since we believe this superb science fiction adventure series should be watched by the viewers themselves, we will not publish a blow by blow, scene by scene review of the Paper Girls, but we do include some favorite moments from the series that do not reveal the overall series story arc.
Instead, we will say that the eight episode series sets up the time travel adventure nicely in episodes one through four, explodes into action in episode five, returns to a slow boil in episodes six and seven and then blows the viewers mind in episode eight.
In the final superb sequences of episode eight, with the help of the Prioress, who has reconsidered her role in the Old Watch, helps Mac and KJ escape in a time ship to an unknown destination in time. All four were supposed to be aboard, but the Prioress is shot and Erin and Tiffany stay behind to help her.
Subsequently, after using future medical technology that begins to heal the Prioress after she was shot by one of Grandfather’s minions, Erin and Tiffany escape the Old Watch in another time ship as Grandfather rushes to stop them. Erin and Tiffany find themselves at a drive-in movie theater that appears to be showing the 1974 film The Longest Yard, some twelve years before they were born in an earlier time period!
The final scenes in the excellent eighth episode sets the foundation for a season two that is rumored to have begun production in late June of 2022 according to a source that we cannot confirm at this time.
Although a Paper Girls season two has not been officially announced as renewed by Amazon Studios, the final scenes set up a great cliffhanger opportunity for launching a second season which we hope will be announced in the near future! In the meantime, we include the Paper Girls panel from San Diego Comic-Con 2022 for your enjoyment courtesy of Magic In the Numbers!

Hello my fellow Comic-Con nerds from around the world!
It is FINALLY here; we are just four days (as of this post) away from San Diego Comic-Con 2022 in person. That’s right, in person! Team WHR and our many friends will roam the corridors and beloved halls at the San Diego Convention Center once again. It has been three long years since we were able to walk those hallowed halls. I am very excited to be back; there will still be COVID protocols, and some of the significant displays won’t be down there. However, that is okay; we will survive!
Let’s start with the first day of Comic-Con, July 21, 2022. Some great panels are happening on this day. To start, the mega Hall H program is Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. No word on what cast members will be in attendance, but it does have a pretty impressive cast, Chris Pine, Hugh Grant, Rege-Jean Page, and Michelle Rodriguez. I am not a D&D player, but I can appreciate all those who do. I also understand it because of my love for Stranger Things and how it uses D&D throughout the series.
The mega Hall H has some great panels for this year’s con. It always does and becomes the most sought-after ticket (wristband) in town. Thursday will also give us Masters of the Universe: 40 Years will be gracing us with the power of Grayskull! I am excited about that panel because I watched that cartoon when I was younger, and the 1987 movie starring the incomparable Dolph Lundgren who is one of my all-time favorite cult movies. Dolph is also going to be there, according to his social media account.
Moving onto Ballroom 20, the little sister of Hall H will also feature an array of panels. Most of the featured panels are the upcoming big, hopefully, blockbuster series or movies starting in the fall. The Disney+ series National Treasure: Edge of History is “an expansion of the hit film franchise” that originally starred Nicolas Cage (who is not announced as returning to the series) and Justin Bartha who is returning as the much loved character Riley Poole. The series cast of Lisette Olivera, Jake Austin Walker, and Lyndon Smith will be appearing at the panel. The new Apple + series Severance, directed by Ben Stiller, will also be featured. I have not seen the series but have heard incredible things about it.
Comic-Con is not only about the big blockbuster, mega movies, or series; it also showcases smaller series or comics that are not as well-known but are certainly not less loved. For example, there is a panel about Godzilla from Toho Studios that I would love to see or the thirtieth anniversary of Spawn. The smaller rooms make it easier to see your favorite stars up close as they do not hold as many as the two mega halls. One of the long waited such jewels is Casper Van Dien from Starship Troopers who will headline a panel for his new streaming series, Salvage Marines. I have always been a big fan of his. This wonderful panel will be in the more intimate Room 7ABC in the main convention center featuring Jennifer Wenger, Peter Shinkoda, Kevin Porter, Shane Graham, and Linara Washington. Team WHR suggests you stop by to see him and the cast of this fun new series!
If you ever found yourself without a ticket to Comic-Con, you can still have fun. There are many off-sites at the back of the Convention Center and across from Petco Park. The Gaslamp is also always festive, with themed restaurants and interactive booths. It is also fun to see all the people dressed in costumes. That is one of my favorite parts of being at Comic-con, seeing all the fantastic, creative, bizarre, obscure costumes people have come up with. I am sure that with the pandemic, people have been able to work on and perfect their ensembles much more. I do not doubt that I will be seeing a horde of The Mandalorian and Grogu floating around.
Another is House of Dragon, the prequel to the popular series Game of Thrones. The significant draw will be Dwayne Johnson bringing the much-anticipated superhero film Black Adam with him. As a result, I will most likely spend most of my day in Hall H on Saturday July 23, 2022!
With Sunday rounding out that incredible weekend, one of my favorite series will be back again for the third time, Mayans MC will bring most of the cast with them, and I feel a special announcement on whether we will get a fifth season. Another favorite FX Networks series is What We Do in the Shadows which will follow the Mayans MC panel. I am happy to see it is back, and in the mega Hall H, it deserves all the praise. Sundays are also great for getting those last-minute items you have been eyeing all week. Vendors are usually much better with bargains on Sunday so go haggle your heart out.
I am surprised that a few of the staples typically at Comic-Con won’t be coming this year. For example, there is no Stranger Things panel, Cobra Kai, or The Witcher panel. I think that many studios are not going to risk their talent getting sick, especially if they are in the middle of, or just starting to shoot again. Even though those shows will not be there, there are plenty of other things to keep attendees occupied. Warner Brothers and Fox will not have big booths or signings this year. I am okay with that because it tends to make everything bottleneck and cause more chaos than the vendors room floor already has. I am sure that by 2023 everything will be back to normal, and we can partake in Comic-Con the way we always have in the past.
Well, my friends, that is all for now! The next time you hear from Team WHR, it will be from the convention itself! My excitement is getting more and more as each day comes closer to preview night! Stay tuned for my reviews and pictures from the SDCC 2022!
