Team WHR originally became interested when Upload on Prime series creator Greg Daniels along with his Executive Producers including Writer Maxwell Theodore Vivian selected an outstanding leading cast including Robbie Amell as Nathan, Andy Allo as Nora, Allegra Edwards as Ingrid, and Kevin Bigley as Luke. When we learned that Upload on Prime would feature famous Stargate celebrities William B. Davis as David and Barclay Hope as Oliver were cast in supporting roles, our interest increased further since we have often followed the careers of upcoming and famous science fiction series stars.

During his time in Lakeview, Nathan meets his Upload customer service representative Nora, with often surprising results in the real world that include his desire to return to Ingrid.

Therefore, you can imagine our team’s delight when Prime Video’s public relations company ScenarioPR selected WormholeRiders News Agency to conduct Upload Press Room interviews during San Diego Comic-Con 2025 to explore the adventures of Nathan, Nora, Ingrid and Luke as Nathan seeks to adjust to his premature death!

This year, Godzilla’s iconic film received four impressive nominations at the prestigious Saturn Awards, which doubled viewership in 2025, including categories for Best International Film, Best Film Direction, Best Film Screenwriting, and Best Visual/Special Effects. Celebrating its remarkable journey, the film emerged victoriously, winning the award for Best International Film. This accolade is more than just a trophy; it serves as a profound validation of Godzilla’s legacy and highlights Japan’s exceptional talent in the realm of filmmaking. Once again, Japan has demonstrated its indomitable presence in the cinematic landscape, reminding us that it remains a formidable force that continues to captivate audiences worldwide. As devoted fans, we can bask in the glow of this recognition, feeling a deep sense of pride and validation for our beloved franchise that has woven itself into the fabric of popular culture including a cool Stern Pinball game!

The Saturn Awards, a prestigious celebration of genre cinema, first graced the entertainment world in 1972, spotlighting the captivating realms of science fiction, fantasy, and horror films.

Over the years, this iconic ceremony has broadened its scope to embrace the magic of television storytelling. In a heartfelt tribute to the late Lance Reddick, the awards introduced in 2024 the inaugural Lance Reddick Legacy Award, honoring Keanu Reeves for his outstanding performances in the beloved John Wick franchise. This accolade embodies a profound appreciation for an actor’s talent and the unforgettable characters they bring to life on screen.

Lance Reddick, a cherished figure within the science fiction community, garnered acclaim for his remarkable role in one of my all-time favorite series, Fringe. His untimely passing in March 2023 left a void in the hearts of fans, yet his enduring legacy will be celebrated through this special award in perpetuity.

Dean Devlin of Electric Entertainment, whose series The Ark earned a nomination, aptly described the Saturn Awards as “a great celebration of nerds cheering on nerd stuff.”

As an admirer of Mr. Devlin’s many contributions to genre entertainment over the past thirty years which include Stargate and Independence Day in then 1990’s, I wholeheartedly resonate with his sentiment!

As devoted science fiction fantasy drama fans, we revel in honoring our favorite narratives and characters, and this year, the highly anticipated Godzilla Minus One has undoubtedly secured its place on our list of cherished highlights.

Godzilla Minus One Director Takashi Yamazaki

Godzilla Minus One is not only a genre film but also sets itself aside as a lesson in filmmaking. As I mentioned, what the director, Takashi Yamazaki, did regarding special effects is astonishing.

Unlike other recent Godzilla movies that are so CGI-heavy that they take you out of the fantasy, Minus One managed to strike a perfect balance. It utilized CGI to enhance the storytelling and create a visually stunning experience without overshadowing the narrative or the iconic monster. This balance is a testament to the film’s quality and a reason for us, as fans, to be reassured about the franchise’s future, knowing it is in good hands.

    Godzilla Minus One Rampage

In this latest interpretation of Godzilla, the narrative strategically emphasizes the deeply woven human stories that resonate throughout the film. The creature, a looming shadow of fear, is not always depicted in its monstrous form but instead manifested through the terror and awareness of its impending presence. The filmmakers masterfully crafted a narrative that operates on multiple levels, disguising itself as a poignant commentary on political and social issues. Within this framework, Godzilla emerges as a powerful symbol of humanity’s hubris, a tangible representation of the chaos and destruction that ensues when conflict ravages a nation. The film unfolds as a chilling reflection on the aftermath of war, illustrating how its consequences give rise to a monstrous reality that lurks beneath the surface. Let us delve into the rich political and social themes “Minus One” explores, revealing how they intricately enhance the film’s overall narrative depth.

    Godzilla Minus One Destruction

What I find captivating about the film is its intricate weaving of Japanese cultural elements, vividly illustrating how the world has grown increasingly complicated. The filmmakers boldly decided to minimize Godzilla’s on-screen presence, yet his overwhelming impact reverberates through the narrative when he does appear. This deliberate restraint heightens the tension and anticipation, making the moments when the monster is revealed even more gripping, allowing the viewers to feel his powerful influence throughout the film.

One compelling reason to celebrate “Minus One” is its complete embrace of the Japanese language, which enriches the film’s authenticity and immerses viewers in a culturally nuanced experience. This choice elevates the storytelling, making it particularly enchanting to enthusiasts of Japanese cinema. Godzilla, a legendary icon, originated in Japan and deserves to be depicted through the lens of its rich cultural heritage.

Godzilla Minus One Shocking - 800

The film boasts an extraordinary cast, with Minami Hamabe portraying the resilient Noriko Ôishi and Ryûnosuke Kamiki embodying the complex Kôichi Shikishima as they navigate the challenges of post-war Japan. Their performances breathe life into the struggles and emotional depth of a society grappling with its past.

With the release of this latest incarnation of Godzilla, I hope Hollywood will pay attention to the nuances of crafting a genre film. It is a refreshing reminder of how to skillfully operate within the constraints of a modest budget while emphasizing storytelling more. The filmmakers of Minus One demonstrated an impressive ability to utilize visual effects with remarkable efficiency, creating a more immersive experience. Additionally, I was captivated by how the film concluded, leaving viewers with an intriguing hint of potential for a thrilling sequel which is currently being written to add to the seventy year Godzilla phenomena.

In closing, I penned an article that explores my deep affection not just for Godzilla but specifically for Minus One. The sheer brilliance of the filmmakers resonates with me profoundly; their remarkable dedication and creativity breathe new life into this legendary monster, resurrecting it from the figurative grave. It is truly inspiring to witness how they reimagined this iconic creature, blending nostalgia with innovative storytelling. I cannot help but admire their remarkable efforts in elevating the Godzilla legacy to new heights.

As The Wormhole Turns – Amazon MGM Studios Streaming Science Fiction Series AND #WeWantStargate!

    Amazon MGM Studios banner logo

Welcome Back WormholeRiders and Science Fiction Series Lovers,

    MGM+ Logo

Our previous article focused on the non renewed La Brea series that apparently indicates an end of an era in scripted science fiction series on United States Network television as it appears to be the case as TeamWHR reported. This article will focus on a special series of As The Wormhole Turns relating to streaming services that have taken the place of network television scripted science fiction series.

Only two pure science fiction genre series remain, The Ark on SYFY and The Lazarus Project on TNT. Both series are on cable channels, not major networks. As a result of this decline in scripted science fiction series, it is apparent that the big three United States television networks ABC, CBS and NBC appear to be bowing out of scripted science fiction series for the time being.

Why? The networks in the United States are faced with withering competition from streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Disney Plus, Hulu, MGM+, Netflix, Paramount Plus, Peacock, Sling, Crackle TV, and many other streaming services.

    One of the Elephants:

The Man in the High Castle poster

This first analysis will focus on one of the “elephants in the room”, Amazon MGM Studios science fiction programs that have been featured in the United States on Prime Video and MGM+.

The Man in the High Castle (2015), starring Alexa Davalos, Rufus Sewell, Chelah Horsdal, Jason O’Mara and featuring a huge ensemble cast  is an alternate reality timeline story about Germany and Japan winning the Second World War. In our opinion, this was the first major success for Amazon Prime streaming science fiction programs and should be watched by fans of scripted science fiction series.

Since then there were two series that we followed. The first series we enjoyed was “Night Sky” (2022) starring J.K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek that featured an alien wormhole portal on Earth.

In the case of “Paper Girls” (2022) we interviewed the cast at the San Diego Comic-Con International convention, an exquisite time travel adventure. Unfortunately, neither of these well done streaming programs were renewed for a second season.

Another huge Amazon Studios success was the purchase of “The Expanse” (2015) from SYFY who unexpectedly cancelled their most popular science fiction series. SYFY abruptly stunned admirers of the series. The last SYFY episode, season three episode thirteen “Abadons Gate” was broadcast on June 18, 2018.

Fortunately, we were at San Diego Comic-Con in July of 2019 as a studio panel guest and interviewing star Cas Anvar about the cancellation when Amazon announced live during the Eisner Awards dinner they were purchasing all rights to “The Expanse” and would return for a additional seasons to the delight of series admirers including our team. The revitalized series broadcast to rave reviews for season four, five and six. “The Expanse” concluded it’s six season successful run on January 14, 2022.

Notable recent Amazon Prime successes are “The Wheel of Time” (2021) starring Rosamund Pike now headed for a third season.

Nest is the most expensive television program ever made, “The Rings of Power” (2022) which although not yet announced, is rumored to have a third season in the works.

Both of these science fiction fantasy series have done well on Prime Video.

On that point, Amazon Studios and MGM Studios only recently, within the past two months, have been renamed Amazon MGM Studios ending their individual names on their social media and websites sites including the introduction of Amazon MGM Studios banners featured specifically on new streaming products.

The inclusion of the Amazon MGM Studios banners began with the hugely successful “Fallout” (on Prime) season one dystopian science fiction series that follows the  and “Outer Range” season two discussed in more detail below.

On the MGM+ streaming service our favorite science fiction series are “From” (2022) which just completed a second season and is entering a third, and “Beacon 23” (2023) which recently completed a second season that we hope will be renewed for a third season. The positive news about Beacon 23 is that Paramount Plus began broadcasting Beacon 23 in the United Kingdom this month (June 2024) hopefully strengthening the series position to qualify for a third season.

The Amazon Prime and MGM Plus Back Story:

    Amazon Prime poster

Now in 2024, virtually all of the other recent science fiction series are now exclusively only on streaming platforms. What we now know as Amazon Prime began on September 7, 2006 as “Amazon Unbox” in the United States. On September 4, 2008, the service was renamed “Amazon Video on Demand”. The Amazon streaming services expanded in 2011 when Amazon bought the United Kingdom based streaming and DVD by mail rental service named “Lovefilm”. Subsequent to this acquisition up to the present time, Amazon re-launched their effort in what we now known as Prime Video. In April 2024, Amazon Studios and MGM Studios merged their two accounts on X into what we now know as Amazon MGM Studios. Another change occurred when Amazon Prime modified their subscription to feature advertisements on all programs and movies not purchased by the viewer. For a modest $2.99 USD extra each month, subscribers can currently eliminate advertisements on all Prime Video content.

    Epix poster

What we now know as the MGM+ streaming service was originally launched in the United States as “Epix” in October 2009. Epix was the result of a joint venture between MGM Studios, Lionsgate, and Paramount Studios.

MGM Studios acquired 100% ownership of “Epix” in late 2017. In March 2022 Amazon purchased MGM Studios. Pending final approval by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), MGM Studios announced that Epix would be renamed as MGM+ on January 15, 2023. The famous MGM Lion logo and introduction was reborn digitally for new programs and movies after many decades of the filmed version of the famous lion which is still featured on old movies and famed programs such as Stargate.

Click to visit Stargate with the fabled MGM Lion!

Aiming to not shock the viewers, Amazon took a slow approach using a gradual transition that took hold in early 2024 when the SEC waiting periods had been completed. MGM Plus, now known as MGM+ assumed it’s place in the Amazon Studios family of Amazon MGM Studios as mentioned above. MGM+ re-positioned itself as a successful sister service on a separate subscription streaming service to the aforementioned Prime Video service. We include both here together because they are owned by the same Amazon parent company.

TeamWHR Favorite Amazon MGM Studios Science Fiction Streaming Series:

    Fallout (2024):

    Fallout on Prime poster

One of our four favorite science fiction series by Amazon MGM Studios is Fallout on Prime. Based on the highly successful Fallout video game series, Fallout with a post apocalyptic story line has taken the world by storm!

Starring Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, Aaron Moten, Kyle MacLachlan, Leslie Uggams, Michael Emerson, and talented ensemble cast, Fallout accurately transforms the excitement of the game play into a science fiction series adventure of epic proportions in the “Years after a nuclear apocalypse devastates America, a violent raid by bandits on an underground fallout shelter forces one of its residents to set out into a barren wasteland filled with radiation, mutated monsters, and a lawless society of those who remained on the surface.”

    video
    play-sharp-fill

    Outer Range (2022):

    Outer Range poster

An “Outer Range” wormhole portal in the “west pasture” of a ranch in Wyoming spans 150 years or more in the range wars between American Indians and two ranch families, the Abbott’s and the Tillerson’s. The portal which contains a black crystalline mysterious mineral, opens and closes at various time periods often sending people from the past to the future and from the future to the past. The results confound the residents and authorities in the fictional town of Wabang, Wyoming

Starring Josh Brolin, Imogen Poots, Lili Taylor, Will Patton, Tom Pelphrey, and Tamara Podemski with a great ensemble cast, “Outer Range” is a slow burning intense series about human interactions, prejudice and human history that intrigues the viewer as the exact same characters from different realities sometimes exist at the same time. The season two finale concludes with an “It’s just beginning” that we hope leads to a third season renewal.

    From (2022):

    From poster

From” has been a runaway supernatural science fiction series hit that began on “Epix” about a group of people who become trapped in a small town with no apparent easy escape. Described on IMDB as “… the mystery of a nightmarish town in middle America that traps all those who enter. As the unwilling residents fight to keep a sense of normality and search for a way out, they must also survive the threats of the surrounding forest; including the terrifying creatures that come out when the sun goes down.”

“From” stars actors we have admired from many years in other series including Harold Perrineau, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Eion Bailey, David Alpay, Ricky He, Hannah Cheramy, Avery Konrad and features a fine ensemble cast that make the nightmare seem all too real.

    Beacon 23 (2023):

    Beacon 23 poster

Beacon 23” is wild science fiction series set far in the future. The “beacons” are supposed to be off limits to political intrigue as safe places where one person is stationed to aid passing space vehicles. “Beacon 23” is described by the studio as “A man living in the 23rd Century works at a remote lighthouse in space that serves as a beacon to help passing ships.” In reality it is a way point for intergalactic conspiracies featuring human beings and fully evolved Artificial Inteligence (AI) beings blended into conflicts between competing civilian, governmental, and military agencies.

This series stars Stephan James, Natasha Mumba, Lena Headey, Eric Lange, Ellen Wong, Stephen Root and Hannah Melissa Scott as a teenage version of the Aster character portrayed by Lena Headey with a stellar (pun intended) supporting cast. The second season and it’s cryptic finale answers many questions that had been posed during season one. We are hopeful “Beacon 23” is renewed for a third season.

    Stargate:

    Stargate SG-1 Team poster

Any analysis of the Amazon MGM Studios science fiction series must include the Stargate franchise. Dormant since “Stargate Origins: Catherine” (2018) but with new movie and or series rumors since then. This includes Stargate trending several times on X over the past two years is the “WeWantStargate” hashtag.

Therefore, many Stargate admirers have wondered why, in the approximate two years since Amazon Studios purchased MGM Studios, the new Amazon MGM Studios have not yet officially announced a new Stargate franchise product?

Why the delay? The precise reasons are known to only to Amazon MGM Studios but are likely related to the following reasons.

    1. All Stargate sets, costumes and props were sold off at the Vancouver Auction in June 2011.
    2. Therefore any new Stargate, even streaming, will be very expensive to produce from scratch.
    3. Many various sites, including TeamWHR indicate the Actors, Writers Strike stopped progress.
    4. Amazon MGM Studios priorities may be focused on other franchises (discussed herein).
    5. Or is there a fear of killing off the franchise if a new Stargate series is not done correctly?

    video
    play-sharp-fill

Will they do so at San Diego Comic-Con 2024? We hope so and include one of our favorite scenes from “Stargate Ark of Truth” above to encourage TPTB at Amazon MGM Studios to proceed ASAP because WeWantStargate and so do ten’s of millions worldwide!

We conclude our analysis of Amazon MGM Studios streaming services with only a suggested enhancement for Prime Video; Don’t drop all episodes of a streaming science fiction series at the same time. Admirers of science fiction enjoy meeting on social media on a weekly basis to chat about the latest episode their favorite science fiction series. Dropping all episodes at one time damages the enthusiasm which may contribute to less than successful series.

Next Up The Ends of Beginnings:

In this edition of As The Wormhole Turns, TeamWHR will continue to cover The Ark science fiction series until it concludes it’s run on SYFY.

However, with the lack of new network scripted series we will begin migrate our science fiction series analysis to spotlight the major science fiction programs that will be featured on various streaming platforms.

Next up will be the second of our feature articles about streaming focus on Netflix and a rumored bundle deal that will also include Apple TV and Peacock TV and a different approach is being taken by a streaming service named Tubi. Free to all viewers, Tubi has taken this approach financing their streaming service with paid advertisements.

Welcome Back The Ark Science Fiction Drama Fans,

    The Ark Season 1 Poster

Dean Devlin has been responsible for many Science Fiction shows and movies during his long career including Independence Day and Stargate that he and his showrunner for The Ark, Jonathan Glassner of Stargate SG-1 fame have created. Both of these talented veterans of the entertainment industry have excelled at thrilling the genre enjoyed by millions worldwide. He is among a small group of top-notch writers, producers, directors who can claim a loyal following of science fiction fans.

In an interview with Variety magazine, Dean remarks that his science fiction is designed for one market, “It’s no longer about gender or age demographic. If you go to a science fiction convention, they are not just kids, they are not just older people. It’s everybody! I wrote this thing (The Ark) as a sort of love letter to the kind of science fiction I grew up watching. My mom was on the original Star Trek. I wanted to make a throwback series and then let it develop over time in unexpected areas. “

Devlin is obviously a huge fan of science fiction, just as are those who watch his films and now The Ark series. To him, it seems to be a bit of escapism during turbulent times. Weekly, we are thrust into a story line involving young people from a variety of countries.

Although the Ark-1 crew and passengers are inexperienced and confused about what lies ahead, we revel in what is being brought to our screens each week. Bravo Dean and Jon!

Despite not knowing who sent it to him, or their motive, Spencer just can’t wait to share it with Felix (Pavle Jerinic).

Spencer is convinced that Sharon is both the murderer on The Ark and the previous murderer on Earth. Felix refuses to allow Lane to make that decision. Lane is becoming a bit irritating because of his dogged tenacity with his belief about Sharon. Perhaps Felix feels the same way. As he walks away from Lane, he can hear the sound of a crying baby. Before long he also sees a family member who we later learn is his husband whom he was forced to leave on Earth.

Meanwhile, inside the Bio-Dome, Angus (Ryan Adams) has discovered that his dear wee cabbage patch is not doing so well. That’s when Lt. James Brice (Richard Fleeshman) appears, and as jocks are wont to do, pokes fun at the nerdy farm boy for talking to his plants. James then suggests that Angus do his “sciency stuff” to find out what is wrong with his vegetables. Does Brice ever really do anything except take immense risks and look for ways to bother people who are actually working? James also finds something else for Angus to do: James leads farm boy to an airlock where he had discarded his glove in episode two. James tells Angus that he needs to analyse it. It’s actually nice that we are getting to know the main characters, better at this point, to decide who among them is relatable. Who do we like and who do we despise? Do they live up to or down to our expectations?

The Ark S1x04 Sharon tells Felix she is innocent and her clone Denise killed the bar patron

Felix is in the middle of interrogating Sharon about the two murders. She continues to protest her innocence. She insists that she was not at the bar in question and was, in fact, in London, England, an ocean away. At the same time, Brice is getting Lane all worked up about Garnet’s guilt, or is he? Felix wants an explanation about Garnet’s alibi. How is it possible for her to be seen murdering a man in a bar and yet, not be in the bar? Hang on to your seats, it’s a whopper. Lt. Garnet is a clone. Actually, she is one half of a pair of clones. The methods used to create her sister clone named Denise are far from ethical. Perhaps in the rush to get off Earth and travel to a new world that creates the concept of ethics having to take a back seat. Denise had become violent. When Garnet returns from her trip to London she discovers that her twin has killed herself. Sharon was placed on The Ark for one final experiment – to determine if her DNA would be better at surviving whatever space travel throws at them. Garnet explains to Felix that no one else knows her secret. He accepts her explanation. Felix strikes me as being very logical in his thought process. He’s almost like Mr. Spock from The Enterprise.

The Ark S1x04 Cat tells Felix she could have been indecent

While Felix was the first to have hallucinations, as a logical person, he is the first to look for an answer to what is happening. Felix steps into Cat’s (Christina Wolfe) Counseling Quarters. She is busy painting her nails and is not amused. She could have been naked, she argues, but it had no affect on Felix who thinks he is going crazy. When he mentions his husband, instead of helping, she is quite pleased that the reason he didn’t react to her in the shower in episode one was because he is gay. In other words, it is all about her. Would you trust this woman to get into your head? Her scientific method is all over the place. It seems that she only manages to help others by accident. Cat tells Felix that everyone probably has “Cabin Fever”. Nope. As a professional, she should be taking the opportunity to confirm her diagnosis by questioning other crew members. Instead, she wants to paint her nails.

The Ark S1x04 Dr. Sanjivni is overrun with patients
Image by Aleksandar Letic Ark TV Holdings Inc, courtesy SYFY

Dr. Kabir (Shalini Peiris), our overworked and under-rested medical professional, has begun to see a hallucination of her mentor, Dr. Hall. We learn that he is the same doctor who mentored Sharon when he helped create her and her twin clone. Kabir spends her time berating him for not being there to help her with all of her patients. The idiot doctor went and got himself killed, damn him. From her perspective, Hall is of no use as her patient list begins to increase. Everyone has “Cabin Feaver”. Oh wait, maybe we should get a medical diagnosis. The hallucinations are quickly turning into seizures that then cause the person to fall into a coma. The only treatment is to sedate the patient.

The Ark -S1x04 Angus hallucinates Sharon in a sexy outfit
Image by Aleksandar Letic Ark TV Holdings Inc, courtesy SYFY

Fortunately for everyone, Angus has an erotic hallucination about his boss, Lt. Sharaon in a sexy outfit. His discussion with her reminds him that the water is the cause of all of their problems. He rushes to the Medbay in time to tell Kabir and then passes out. Later, Kabir, Garnet, Alicia and Lane meet to discuss their problem with the water. A new element has now been identified. The substance is affecting the brain like LSD, as well as the cardiovascular system and the body’s electrical system. If they don’t get it under control, people will begin to die. The hallucination Dr. Edward Hall (Jonathan English) concurs.

The Ark S1x04 The doctor passes out
Image by Aleksandar Letic Ark TV Holdings Inc, courtesy SYFY

As Garnet and Kabir walk down the corridor toward the Med Bay, Garnet tells the doctor that she has been drinking just as much water as everybody else, yet she feels fine. No hallucinations. She reasons that maybe the doctor can find out why by testing her blood. This may present a cure. It turns out that Dr. Hall  is a mentor to Garnet as well. He made her who she is, meaning that he and the other scientists injected her DNA with tiny creatures DNA called Tardigrades. These creatures are able to live in space with no issues. Kabir replies that she is aware that Garnet is different. She was made privy to the information that Hall had learned. Once Kabir synthesizes the element from Garnet’s blood, she can cure the crew. Unfortunately, with the first synthesised sample, Kabir passes out. Well, at least now she can get some rest.

The Ark S1x04 Alicia finishes the cure
Image by Aleksandar Letic Ark TV Holdings Inc, courtesy SYFY

Alicia (Stacey Read), the other resident genius comes to the rescue! She figures out what needs to be done and dumps the new compound into the ship’s water supply to cure the crew and passengers.

As everyone begins to come out of their hallucinations, including Angus, he realises that the new element that they found may be part of a weapon developed and released by aliens who may be attacking everyone on Ark-1!

Well, here we are on episode four and we still do not know who the murderer is, other than that it’s not Lt. Sharon. Nor do we know who sent Lt. Spencer Lane the video of the bar fight, so that means there is someone who wants to sabotage the relationships on Ark-1. We do know that Spencer desperately wants to be captain of Ark-1 and seems willing to do whatever it takes to achieve that goal. Lt. James, who refused to get blood taken by hallucination Dr. Kabir, seems to have his own secret also.

The Ark S1x04 Baylor and Alicia are attracted to each other
Image by Aleksandar Letic Ark TV Holdings Inc, courtesy SYFY

Alicia and Baylor Trent (Miles Barrow) seem to want to connect, but Baylor seems to have a secret as well. Baylor and Susan Ingram (Lisa Brenner), his hallucination, have a discussion about how he was brought into The Ark program. It seems that, “We do what we have to do to recruit the like-minded.” What does that mean?

Meanwhile, Eva Markovic (Tiana Upcheva) is having a terrible time emotionally separating from her boyfriend, hallucination, Harris Beckner (Dominik Cicak). As for Cat Brandice, her hallucination of Eva committing suicide in front of her suggests to me that she is not quite as confident about her abilities as she likes to pretend.

The Ark S1x04 The team comes together
Image by Aleksandar Letic Ark TV Holdings Inc, courtesy SYFY

Although the command team comes together after the hallucinations, the conflicts between them still exist and the resulting tensions will have to be addressed in future episodes as the alien threat looms.

We here at Team WHR eagerly look forward to episode five “One Step Forward, Two Steps Back, this week on SYFY in the United States and CTVSciFi in Canada.

No doubt another mind blowing episode is coming our way. Will episode five reveal the aliens and who the saboteur(s) on Ark-1 really is or are? We shall see!

We leave you until next time with a fun video from this episode courtesy of SYFY. Enjoy!

Welcome back WormholeRiders and Salvage Marines!

San Diego Comic-Con 2022 is currently behind us but certainly not forgotten! Team WHR had the great opportunity to interview three main cast members in the official Press Room and attend the panel which featured the latest trailer (included below) of the upcoming PopCornFlix streaming series Salvage Marines. Salvage Marines is based on the Necrospace book series by Sean-Michael Argo, who helped create the series along with Raphael Jordan and Jamie R. Thompson.

It was my pleasure to sit down with Casper Van Dien (Starship Troopers), Peter Shinkoda (iRobot), and Jennifer Wenger (Tales of Halloween). Team WHR had an advantage since we were one of the few press outlets that were allowed to sit down with these three outstanding actors! I must say that Kenn and I had a great time conducting an excellent interview.

What better place to show and introduce a series like Salvage Marines than at San Diego Comic-Con? Where Starship Troopers had a panel 25 years ago (yes, it has been that long) and where science fiction adventure shows are the norm with shows like Fringe, Doctor Who and Firefly over the last decade, Salvage Marines was a delight to behold. It almost goes without saying that in particular, fans of this genre dress up like characters from Star Trek, Stargate, Doctor Who, Star Wars, and Galaxy Quest and we look forward to Salvage Marines Cosplay at future conventions!

Casper Van Dien and Peter Sinkoda, Salvadge Marines panel SDCC 7/21/22

One of the reasons I wanted this interview was Casper Van Dien. As a HUGE fan of Starship Troopers, I would be remiss not to get a chance to sit down and talk with Johnny Rico! Casper, Peter, and Jennifer were so much fun in the interview, and I could see their dynamic in person translate beautifully on the screen to the series.

Salvage Marines harkens back to the older science fiction days when the original Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers, Star Trek, and Doctor Who were seen on the airways. It gives you that sense of nostalgia while still maintaining the current political and social climates today. Corporate greed and life debt are the definite themes in this series, how once you accrue the debt in your life, you spend the rest of it trying to, albeit unsuccessfully, repay that debt. If that debt is not paid, it gets transferred to your children, and so on. Salvage Marines is the only way to repay it. However, the mortality rate is very high, so if you cannot make it, then your family will be the ones that have to be burdened with your debt.

The Salvage Marines panel featured the trailer (above) for the upcoming series, many other cast members, and the director of the whole series, Shaun-Paul Piccinino (Lady Driver), and co-creator Rafael Jordan (Ride the Lightning). Kevin Porter (Heroes with Issues), Shane Graham (The Son), and Linara Washington (Casting the Net) rounded out the cast at the panel for this beautiful series. Legendary actor Armand Assante (Mambo Kings) was missing from the panel, but his presence was still felt throughout, with the main actors praising him and his skill. Jennifer Wenger commented to me during the interview before the panel that she would go and watch him on set, even if she wasn’t needed that day, because he is such a legend, and you can learn so much from watching actors like him.

During the panel, Casper said something exciting; he noted that almost all space or science fiction shows were Westerns in space. He said Starship Troopers, Star Wars, and Firefly are all based on the formula of a Western; he said, “we are out there cowboying, cowgirling it.” Knowing that he said that and seeing all the movies he mentioned makes sense.

Linara Washington also made a great point about science fiction; it’s one of the only inclusive genres. No matter who you are or what you look like, you are accepted in that world. It’s kind of like the island of misfit toys, only better. “It’s almost at the forefront of things that are happening; it’s like having a blueprint before things actually go down.” The series feels relatable, even though it is “based in the far future” as Rafael Jordan noted, “their problems are our problems; it helps put you into the story.”

2022-07-21 Peter Shinkoda Jennifer Wenger and Casper Van Dien in the Salvage Marines Press Room
Image by Team WHR WormholeRiders News Agency

One significant point Peter Shinkoda brought up during our interview and reinforced during the panel is that Salvage Marines “drops us into a specific time…we all start the same place. It doesn’t matter your age, social status, and certainly not your race puts us on a playing field; we are all under the same common denominator. We all face the same obstacles”. That is why the sci-fi genre is much more inclusive, and you will always see more diverse casts than in any other genre.

I am happy that shows like this are being made on smaller streaming platforms like PopCornFlix. I am looking forward to people discovering the series, and I am sure the book series fans will appreciate and enjoy the series. Having an actor like Casper Van Dien at the helm of this series is a no-brainer; his resume speaks for itself. When you are part of one of the most iconic, cult-favorite sci-fi bug movies, who else would you want to lead the way? It helps that he has his friends like Peter Shinkoda and his wife Jennifer Wenger with him in the series, as it lends itself more to the believability of the situation.

Kevin Porter Salvadge Marines panel SDCC 7/21/22
Image by Lori Glumac for WormholeRiders News Agency

There were some fun antics that the actors talked about during the panel. One such was when Kevin Porter, who plays Boss Wynn Masters, was reciting a monologue to his Marines, and the camera was on them; he forgot some of the monologues and started reciting Beauty and the Beast, “A tale as old as time” which made some of the cast almost break character, he even warned Jennifer with a visual cue not to break character or he would as well. I always like hearing about things like that on a set; viewing the series is much more fun. Shane Graham also mentioned how one of the other cast members, Ashley Mary Nunes (Beasts of the Field), pretty much outran everyone on set, and when he was in a scene with her, she got into a ditch, she was jumped into a 12-foot ditch and he “was like 30 seconds behind her.” It was a laugh for everyone in the panel and a cheering session for Ashley as she stood up and waved at all of us in the panel.

Image by Lori Glumac for WormholeRiders News Agency

With Star Trek being the one science fiction show that dominates the airways, it is nice to see another type of show that can be added to the Sci-Fi list. Especially when you have a veteran like Casper at the front of the series, it makes it much more acceptable. I hope you get the chance to watch these great excellent series on Popcornflix and help bring more series like this to this streaming service and others.

Thank you to Casper, Jennifer, and Peter for the great interview and the rest of the cast and filmmakers for the fun and insightful panel. I look forward to seeing the reactions to this new series and hope there will be more seasons in the future. Salvage Marines premieres TODAY July 28th, 2022 on PopCornFlix!

The first series of items available from Ms. Bertrand include rare screen worm costumes, official artwork and series posters that were either featured in the Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis television series episodes produced by MGM Studios from 1997 to 2009, or were used as inspiration for the creation of actual costumes themselves featured in the various series.

Each costume or item comes with a genuine certificate of authenticity for the discerning collector of Stargate memorabilia who may like to use the costumes for COSPlay when attending various entertainment conventions of their choice!

Stargate Atlantis Doctor Rodney McKay Costume:

This famous character costume includes a screen worn sweater, turtle neck and pants worn by actor David Hewlett.

The costume was used in the Stargate Atlantis season four twentieth episode “The Last Man”.

Stargate Atlantis fans will recall this iconic episode costume when a holographic Doctor McKay helped Lt. Colonel John Sheppard use the Stargate in the distant future to return from the abandoned city of Atlantis in order to help save our Stargate heroes team survive in the present.

A very rare item indeed for any admirer of Stargate Atlantis’ Doctor Rodney McKay and the only one of it’s kind known to still exist!

    Stargate SG-1 Master Bra’tac’s Cloak:

Bratac screen worn cloak worn by Tony Amendola

Screen worn cloak worn by Tony Amendola who portrayed Bra’tac, a hero Jaffa character from the Stargate SG-1 series.

Fans will recall that the Jaffa were genetically engineered by the evil Goa’uld to be their slaves, and also served as incubators of their hideous larval Goa’uld that were placed in an abdominal pouch of the Jaffa slaves until maturity and harvesting.

The classically heavy, famous Bra’tac Jaffa cloak was used in various Stargate SG-1 episodes from 1997 to 2007. This rare item would make a perfect costume accoutrement from the Stargate SG-1 series for wearing at Halloween, at costume parties or as COS-Play costume at entertainment conventions!

    Stargate Atlantis White Medical Scrubs:

Stargate Atlantis worn medical Dr Zelenka suit screen worn by David Nykl

Screen worn medical scrubs costume of Doctor Radek Zalenka who was portrayed by actor David Nykl in the Stargate Atlantis series from 2004 to 2009.

Dr. Zelenka was often seen in this costume when he performed his critical medical duties in the fabled lost city of Atlantis located in the Pegasus galaxy while tending to wounded or injured Atlantis heroes or when performing scientific experiments with Doctor Rodney McKay.

Stargate Atlantis fans will recall when Doctor Zelenka was often teasing McKay in the process while wearing these medical scrubs!

Another very realistic costume from the Stargate Atlantis series for the fan who likes to wear such things at Halloween, at costume parties, as a COS-Play costume at entertainment conventions, or for just plain fun!
