As our article title and the third season La Brea poster header indicated all season long, is this an end of an era in scripted science fiction series on major network television channels like NBC?

Do such science fiction series, subsequent to lower ratings as compared to police, fire, and hospital scripted programs (which are flourishing), spell the end of the science fiction genre on major network channels in the United States?

Unfortunately, this would appear to be the case for new science fiction series that could be broadcast on the United States television networks ABC, CBS or NBC.

There is good news however. Beloved science fiction television genre series is well underway via movement to streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Crackle TV, Disney Plus, Hulu, MGM Plus, Netflix, Paramount Plus, and Peacock TV.

What this means is that although science fiction on major United States based network channels may be at the End Of Life (EOL) for now, the science fiction television genre will live on to be loved by tens of millions of viewers as evidenced by recent science fiction series successes such as Fallout, Foundation, For All Mankind, Outer Range, Halo, The Mandalorian and other new content being created for and by streaming television services!

    The Forty Year Back Story:

ABC Network (now part of Disney) was a player in the modern science fiction broadcast world subsequent to their highly successful Lost series from 2004 to 2010 with 121 episodes. After a notable original V mini-series success on NBC in 1983, V The Final Battle in 1984 and a shortened nineteen episode weekly series on NBC that left science fiction fans with huge cliffhanger, ABC picked up the franchise. ABC subsequently left the science fiction genre after a two season run of a reboot of V Series from 2009 to 2011 that also disappointed fans who had hoped the story arc would be completed in a third season.

CBS Network had never been a significant science fiction content producer until it picked up the Star Trek franchise now broadcast on the Paramount Plus streaming service.

Likewise, the CW Network (originally UPN – The United Paramount Network until 2006), like SYFY, is actually a cable channel that produced significant science fiction related content including The Secret Circle (2011), The Vampire Diaries (2009), Arrow (2012), iZombie (2015), Legends of Tomorrow (2016), Riverdale (2017) and the popular Superman & Lois (2021) entering its fourth and final season soon.

With very few exceptions, notably the SYFY Channel in the United States (a cable channel that is owned by NBC), there are few relatively new science fiction scripted series on network television remaining.

These include as The Ark headed for a second season and comedic science fiction series Resident Alien (hopefully pending renewal for a fourth season).

Now in 2024, virtually all of the other recent science fiction series are now exclusively only on streaming platforms.

Streaming Roots and How We Arrived Here:

    Sanctuary Season 3 Banner

The roots of successful streaming programs can be said to have arguably begun in earnest in May 2007 with the Sanctuary web series first broadcast on the Internet. The Sanctuary web based series was so successful it actually crashed the Internet servers on launch day. I was peripherally involved in a support role for fans to interact with the series star Amanda Tapping while running a popular website dedicated to supporting the Stargate franchise prior to the launch of WormholeRiders News Agency in 2008. Sanctuary, produced in conjunction with Space Channel of Canada (now known as CTV SciFi), was such a success that the web series was picked up by SYFY (then the SciFi channel) that ran four seasons from 2009 to 2001.

SciFi began broadcasting in September 1992 with the hit movie Star Wars Episode IV (The New Hope) as its first broadcast.

SciFi had much early success over their early years which can be attributed to broadcasting re-runs of iconic science fiction programs such as the early episodes of Dr. Who, The Prisoner, The Invaders, Star Trek the Original Series (TOS) and many various fan favorite science fiction movies.

    Farscape Banner

SYFY’s first original hit series was the short lived one season dystopian space opera Mission Genesis in 1997. Then came First Wave co-produced with the Space Channel broadcast from 1998 to 2001.

This was followed by the now classic Farscape series that was broadcast from 1999 to 2003. Farscape was co-produced with Nine Network.

SciFi then invested heavily in additional science fiction scripted series beginning when it acquired the rights in 2001 to broadcast Stargate SG-1 owned by MGM Studios (Now known as Amazon MGM Studios).

Stargate SG-1 was originally on Showtime from 1997 to 2001, then continued to be broadcast on SYFY until 2007 for a combined total of ten episode years totaling 214 episodes. SYFY then added the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica in 2004, and Stargate Atlantis in 2005. MGM released two follow on direct to DVD Stargate SG-1 movies in 2008 that SYFY also broadcast. Stargate Universe began in 2009 and in 2010 SYFY created Caprica, a popular Battlestar prequel series that sadly only lasted one season.

SYFY also became well known for their weekly wild and often wacky science fiction movies for which it became famous in their own right.

The wildly successful weekly movie series generated huge followings of millions of viewers every week that culminated in the success of the Sharknado movies (1 to 6) series that concluded in 2018.

Close competitors in the with superb science fiction content in the twenty-first century were the Turner Network Television (TNT) Network and its fabulous Falling Skies series with five seasons broadcast from 2011 to 2015.

TNT’s also broadcast their subsequently successful program called The Last Ship, a dystopian action science fiction drama series that ran for five seasons from 2014 to 2018.

The Fox Network was a strong contributor with their original The X-Files series from 1993 to 2002, Sliders in 1998, Firefly in 2002, and the iconic fabled Fringe series produced at Warner Brothers Television that ran for five years and 100 episodes from 2008 to 2013. Fox and the fascinating time travel mystery series Alcatraz was not renewed after one season in 2011 despite strong ratings when the network decided to renew Fringe for a fifth season instead. Fox left the genre after NexT rogue AI series in 2020 which ran for only one season. Fox Network television was subsequently acquired by Disney which has its hands full with Marvel and Star Wars streaming series.

    The Beginning of The End:

La Brea S3x06 The end of Levi

The decline of science fiction series like La Brea on network television channels can be traced back to its roots on December 03, 2009 when telecommunications giant Comcast announced its intent to acquire mass media company NBC Universal from General Electric corporation amid concerns at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of potential negative effects within the vertical entertainment industry since Comcast was also heavily involved in cable television and internet services in many United States media markets.

On March 19, 2013 General Electric divested itself from NBC giving Comcast sole ownership and a free hand to reduce employees located within duplicate internal divisions. Through this acquisition, Comcast gained ownership of the National Broadcasting Company (NBC), the film studio Universal Pictures, cable channels such as SYFY, Universal Parks & Resorts. Among other assets owned by NBC Universal was the USA Network and the E! Channel who  often ran large entertainment convention events at San Diego Comic-Con, WonderCon in San Francisco and Anaheim as well as at New York ComicCon at the Javits Center.

SYFY reigned supreme for many years via their continued strong interest in scripted science fiction series (many were acquired and developed with Canadian UK network partners) subsequent to beginnings of the merger mania in 2009.

These fabulous programs included Sanctuary, Warehouse 13, Eureka, Helix, Haven, Alphas, Lost Girl, Merlin, Defiance, Continuum, 12 Monkeys, Dark Matter, Killjoys and The Expanse. Their last major five year successes concluded with the supernatural science fiction thrillers Van Helsing, Wynonna Earp, and The Magicians.

The cracks in the formula became apparent when SYFY, out of nowhere, stunned viewers when it dumped The Expanse despite rave reviews and being the highest rated science fiction program in 2018.

Fortunately The Expanse was picked up by Amazon Studios, running on Amazon Prime for three more seasons on the streaming service with success and high praise.

In 2018, the pressure on broadcast networks became evident when a fabulous science fiction series on the NBC’s USA Network named Colony became a casualty. The NBC and Comcast merger “Reductions In Force” (RIF) became known as “the night of the long knives” which impacted the majority of staffers, employees and publicists whose careers ended abruptly with what many believe were unanticipated layoffs. Another great NBC series, Manifest, was not renewed but was saved by streaming service Netflix.

La Brea S3x06 The Harris family looks for Eve
Image by Greg Gayne courtesy NBC

Great SYFY series such as Primeval New World, Ghost Wars, Incorporated, and Day of The Dead were subsequently not renewed after single seasons, likely a result of terminating publicist marketing employee teams in “the night of the long knives” that were needed for continued series success. Krypton, based on the DC Comics Superman franchise, made it to two years to 2019 but effectively ended cable channel SYFY’s dominance as undisputed king of science fiction series as an NBC network affiliate. SYFY original programming suffered as a result. Alien Nation and horror based Chucky remain as the only multi-season survivors.

The Man in the High Castle poster

However, all these events actually jump started the streaming services movement which can be traced in large part to huge success in 2015 with a The Man In the High Castle broadcast on Amazon Prime Video for four seasons concluding in 2019.

This factor was repeated with the Warner Brothers Discovery merger last year that cancelled a completed season four production of Snowpiercer ready to be broadcast on TNT (the fourth season now will broadcast by AMC in 2025), and Westworld which had been renewed for a fifth season on HBO but will not be produced after the merger that produced the Warner Discovery conglomerate. With talk of further consolidation in the entertainment industry looming in the future, all this could mean the end of ABC, CBS, or NBC network channel science fiction series in the United States.

La Brea S3x06 Scott and Ty get ready

Since that time a few months ago, new science fiction series broadcast on major network television channels ABC, CBS and NBC are few and far between. After NBC chose not to renew a superb series named Debris with good ratings created by J.H. Wyman of Fringe after broadcasting only thirteen episodes in season one ending in late May 2021, the beloved La Brea time travel science fiction series on NBC may be the last major network television effort in that regard, at least for the time being.

The Future of Science Fiction Television is Streaming:

    The Mandalorian Season 2 Poster

Streaming services accelerated during the transition subsequent to the entire Star Wars and Star Trek franchises moving to streaming platforms when Disney purchased Lucas Film.

CBS, broadcast owner of Star Trek franchise launched Paramount Plus, the renamed CBS All Access streaming service.

Star Wars series such as The Mandalorian, Obi Wan Kenobi, The Book of Bobba Fett, and Andor have been a success on Disney Plus. Star Trek series including Discovery, Picard, and Strange New Worlds have been huge successes on the Paramount Plus streaming service.

All of this begs the question:

Will ever be another science fiction series to be launched on a major network channel in the United States?

Or is the science fiction genre to only find life only on streaming services in the future? We shall see.

In the meantime, enjoy the wildest moments of La Brea courtesy of NBC included below.

    The Road Home Part 2:

La Brea S3x06 Izzy is shocked
Image by Mark Taylor courtesy NBC

We here at Team WHR believed that there is much more to this superb La Brea story remaining to be told. Unfortunately, “The Road Home, Part 2” is the finale for this terrific time travel science fiction adventure series. Although we had been hoping for at least five full seasons of the La Brea series, as the old adage often applied to television programming saying goes; “Don’t Cry and Be Sorry it’s Over, Be Happy Because It Happened”, and we are because the series ended without cliffhangers!

On that note, we waited to post this analysis hoping that series creator David Appelbaum would be able to place La Brea with one of the major streaming services. As of this post, that does not seem to be happening at this time, but will remain hopeful that may occur in the future after we publish this feature article.

“The Road Home, Part 2” finale aired subsequent “The Road Home, Part 1” after a remaining character named Helena (Emily Wiseman) surfaced in the episode “Fire Storm” where we learned that Helena is Gavin Harris’s (Eoin Macken) half sister. We also learned that Time Travel was invented by their father who finished setting up the technology in 1965 using modern 2020’s computer technology to create jet aircraft that in the end help save our heroes.

La Brea S3x06 Harris family reunited
Image by Greg Gayne courtesy NBC

The good news of La Brea is that the series producers and creator ensured the series would conclude on a happy note creating an enjoyable ending for their fans. Eve (Natalie Zea) and her family of Gavin, Josh (Jack Martin), and Izzy (Zyra Gorecki), in fact all the main characters including Sam Velez (Jon Seda) and his daughter Riley (Veronica St. Clair), Scott Israni (Rohan Mirchananey), Veronica Castillo (Lily Santiago), Lucas Hayes (Josh McKenzie), Judah (Damien Fotiou), and even Petra (Asmara Feik) daughter of deceased villain Maya Schmidt (Claudia Ware), all safely make it back safely to 2021 either using the prototype Time Travel jet aircraft or utilized a wormhole portal to return home to their own time, most likely closing once and for all after everyone returned to 2021.

La Brea S3x06 Ty will sty in 10,000 BC

In the end, Ty Coleman (Chiké Okonkwo) decided to stay in 10,000 BC with his wife Paara (Tonantzin Carmelo) to live out their lives.  Levi Delgado (Nicholas Gonzales) sadly passed away sacrificing himself to save the others.

We never learned the fate of Silas (Mark Lee) and other characters in 10,000 BC. Likewise, Leyla (Edyll Ismail) daughter of Ruth (Chantelle Jamieson) never consummated her relationship with Izzy due to the shortened third season.

    Stargate SG-1 Moebius part

Lastly, the La Brea series finale reminded me of the famous two part Stargate SG-1 episode “Moebius part 2” where the main characters went back in time to fix the future. The end result was that Stargate SG-1 main characters lived as themselves in ancient Egypt as a method to ensure that the future characters never had to go back in time in the first place so they could fish at Jack’s pond that had no fish before Moebius but did have fish when the future characters ended the eighth season knowing they had changed the future.

La Brea S3x06 The Time Travel jet aircraft

Therefore, speaking of endings, there are a La Brea few items that were not addressed in the finale: Did Gavin destroy the trouble making Time Travel computer chip in the jet aircraft?
Did everyone get back to the correct time at the end (pun intended)? Did the original wormhole ever occur in the pilot episode if Gavin destroyed the time chip technology after returning to 2021?
Did the finale cleanly avoid all time paradoxes of having two of several main characters that existed at the same time (again pun intended)?

La Brea S3x06 The end of an era in 10,000 BC

In closing our analysis of La Brea, one of our favorite science fiction series by the way, we wonder If Gavin did not destroy the time chip after they all returned after the wormhole occurred in 2021, since the items above were never really addressed, what could happen in the future?

Although unlikely, It remains a long shot possibility that a La Brea series could return in the future, perhaps on a streaming service, so everyone can learn more about Gavin’s father in 1965, and the fate of humankind in the future.

We certainly hope that to be the case!

Welcome Back La Brea and Wormhole Time Travel Science Fiction Lovers!

    La Brea Season 3 poster

“The Road Home, Part 1” sets up the series finale “The Road Home, Part 2” airing next week on NBC after the awesome excitement of “Fire Storm”, we move to the fabulous fifth episode of La Brea, the first of a two part series finale named “The Road Home, Part 1” after the final remaining unrevealed character named Helena (Emily Wiseman) who surfaced in the previous episode “Fire Storm”. We learned that Helena is Gavin’s (Eoin Macken) half sister in 2021 after she took him to a bank safety deposit box to retrieve the prototype Time Travel Computer Chip. We also learned that Time Travel was invented by their father who finished setting up the technology in 1965.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of La Brea are the plot twists that the writers develop on who the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ characters are. As an example, Gavin and Helena knew each other for decades before they stole the Time Travel Computer Chip technology from Maya Schmidt (Claudia Ware) in 2021 to put an end to her abuse of time travel that originally resulted in a wormhole sinkhole opening in late September 2021 and the creation of dual colored aurora time travel wormhole portals that have resulted in our heroes and their acquaintances being sent to 10,000 BC. The outcome was that Maya erased Gavin’s memories of the work that he did to create time travel jet aircraft that have caused ripples in the Space Time Continuum actions.

La Brea S3x04 Ty and Sam catch up with Gavin and Helena

Helena, against her wishes, is forced to let Ty (Chiké Okonkwo) return to 10,000 BC with the prototype Time Travel Computer Chip in an effort to save Eve (Natalie Zea) who we have learned was taken to 1965 by Maya. In “Fire Storm”, Maya also took Scott (Rohan Mirchananey) prisoner for her nefarious purposes of taking control of the Time Travel Facilities created by Gavin and Helena’s father.

Before beginning our review and analysis of “The Road Home, Part 1” we will share that one major character will sadly perish in this episode. Additionally, what we suspected last episode is that since Helena apparently knew where the wormhole portals would manifest themselves, she would follow Ty back to 10,000 BC to stop Maya and help Gavin’s family and friends determine a way to restore them to their timeline, find Eve, Levi (Nicholas Gonzales), Riley (Veronica St. Clair), and Josh (Jack Martin). Based on this episodes story arc, other supporting characters including Paara (Tonantzin Carmelo), Silas (Mark Lee) and Maya’s daughter Petra (Asmara Feik) may be written out of the series entirely. We shall see.

The Road Home – Part 1:

La Brea S3x05 Gavin and Ty discuss their plans to find their missing family members

The fifth episode of season three, written by Jerome Schwartz and directed by Nick Gomez, opens in 10,000 BC with Gavin walking in the forest while he thinks about saving Eve. This is the morning after Gavin Sam (Jon Seda) met with Ty has returned from 2021 with the Time Travel Computer Chip.

Subsequent to chatting with Izzy (Zyra Gorecki), Ty joins Gavin to discuss their viable options to create a plan to not only rescue Eve, Paara, Riley, Josh and Levi, but perhaps use the aurora wormholes to return home to their own time in 2021.

La Brea S3x01 Scott provides Gavin Potato power
Image by Mark Taylor courtesy NBC

Both agree that they cannot trust whoever has been sending the messages via the potato powered computer they obtained at the Time Travel Facility before it was destroyed last season. Gavin and Ty ascertain that whoever is communicating with them is part of the Time Travel conspiracy that created this fiasco in the first place.

Ty shares that Paara and Silas are missing and “should have returned days ago” reinforcing that we may not see these characters again before the series completes it run next week as mentioned above. However, both express hope they will get their families back.

La Brea S3x05 Izzy shares with Veronica that she is attracted to Leyla
Image by Mark Taylor courtesy NBC

Meanwhile in the safety of the village fort in 10,000 BC we are with Izzy, Ruth (Chantelle Jamieson), Veronica (Lily Santiago), Leyla (Edyll Ismail) and Lucas (Josh McKenzie). Izzy confides to Veronica that she likes Leyla who has asked Veronica to go on an overnight “stargazing” camp out. Veronica shares that she and Lucas “figure it out one day at a time”, encouraging Izzy to do the same. With the series ending next week, it is a shame that these two romantic relationships will not be explored further in a fourth season.

La Brea S3x05 Maya sends more cryptic messages to Gavin about Time Travel Computer microchip

With Maya watching their every move, there is now no doubt that she is an evil influence with an agenda that cannot be trusted. This is once again proven accurate when Maya once again shows up immediately after a message appears on the potato powered computer asking “Did you find the microchip?” referring to the Time Travel Computer Chip prototype she needs to complete her corrupt conspiracy to control history utilizing time travel.

La Brea S3x05 Lucas is concerned about Maya
Image by Mark Taylor courtesy NBC

Sam is with Lucas who is visiting his mother’s grave when they discuss the kidnapping of Scott during the “Fire Storm” episode wondering how anyone could have figured it out during the emergency. Lucas is certain “someone is feeding them information” providing viewers with further proof that Maya is the likely culprit. Gavin is ordered via the computer to take the chip to “Cahuega Peak before sunset and you will get Eve”. Gavin suspects that it is a trap setup by Maya. Leading her into a sense of overconfidence when he says he needs to think about it. Maya follows Gavin who threatens him at gunpoint. Sam and Ty show up to save Gavin.

La Brea S3x05 Veronica finds a radio marked Ladera Air Base
Image by Mark Taylor courtesy NBC

Back at the village fort Veronica is setting the table for a scheduled council meeting when she discovers a military grade waterproof box containing radio equipment stamped with “Ladera Air Base”.

Veronica immediately seeks out Lucas to inform him of her discovery of the suspicious equipment found under a rug in the council chambers.

Veronica determines that Maya was never allowed in the council chambers sharing this detail with Lucas. This confirmation proves that this clue leading Veronica and Lucas to suspect that someone on the village council must be in league with Maya.

La Brea S3x05 The enigmatic Ladera Air Base in prehistoric times

We move to the enigmatic Ladera Air Base where we find Scott and Levi being held captive. Scott reveals to Levi that Maya lied to everyone and was responsible for kidnapping him as well to obtain archeological knowledge documented in a white paper Scott wrote called “Universal Flora – A Study of What We Leave Behind” that is somehow linked to whatever Maya is up to.

La Brea S3x05 Maya is captured by Gavin Sam and Ty

Speaking of Maya, we segue to Ty, Sam and Gavin who have tied her up demanding that she reveal where Eve is. Unfortunately, Maya is wearing a tracking device that looks like a wristwatch which spells trouble for Gavin, Sam and Ty.

Our heroes are captured by Maya’s soldiers from the Ladera Air Base. Maya quickly takes possession of the Time Travel Computer Chip prototype.

La Brea S3x05 Maya escapes by military jeep

We then learn that Helena did indeed follow Ty back from 2021 when she ambushes the soldiers holding Sam Gavin and Ty at gunpoint killing several of them. Maya is not hit by weapons fire, escaping in a military jeep to leverage her knowledge about the Time Travel Computer Chip and complete her nefarious plan to control time. At this juncture, we can only hope that our heroes will still manage to help save Eve? We shall see.

La Brea S3x05 Helena comes from 2021 to rescue Gavin Sam and Ty

Helena shares with the group “you have no idea what that woman (Maya) is capable of” revealing that Maya is the head of a private corporate contracting group that built the time travel aircraft Gavin flew before his memory was erased by Maya. Once Maya stumbled on the time travel technology as a contractor, she kept it secret, hijacking it to solidify their corporate dominance not only in 2021, but across all time forever! Gavin, Ty, Sam and Helena head to the Ladera Air Base to take back the Time Travel Computer Chip before Maya can execute her plan to sell the technology to the highest bidder. At this point the viewers should consider this to be a plot hole since selling the technology could lead others to be able to change history in their favor over Maya’s wishes.

La Brea S3x05 Ruth and her henchman
Image by Mark Taylor courtesy NBC

At the council meeting Veronica reveals the military radio she discovered to Ruth and her henchman telling the group they must take a break to consider Veronica’s serious accusation.

Instead Ruth flees the village indicating that she is a prime suspect cooperating with Maya’s plans.

The question viewers asked is why? Ruth always appeared dedicated to the people in the village fort. Veronica and Lucas follow Ruth to get to the answer of what the heck is going on.

La Brea S3x05 Levi disables the security camera in Scotts cell

In a series of stunning story arc reveals, Levi had been taken from his cell for more what viewers believed was more interrogation. Levi actually meets up with Maya claiming he is in process of extracting information from Scott for her plan. In fact, Levi is a spy against Maya.

Disabling the security camera in Scott’s cell, Levi tells Scott they must work together to stop Maya from completing her plan and help save his one time lover Eve. Levi details that he was sent on his spy mission to investigate “Maya who has operations throughout time, including 10,000 BC”. Levi turns the security camera back on, punching Scott in the gut twice to fool Maya. Levi tells Maya he must move Scott to the “long term detention center” which she agrees to. Scott and Levi then make good their escape from Ladera Air Base in 10,000 BC.

As the episode winds down to the end viewers enjoy another fun scene when a prehistoric alligator attacks Ty, Sam, Helena and Gavin who are traveling to Ladera Air base on a raft to rescue Eve.

Naturally they dispatch the giant beast using automatic weapons fire and proceed on foot to the base. However, they are all being monitored by another security camera mounted in a tree!

La Brea S3x05 Ruth admits she was protecting Leyla

When confronted by Izzy, Veronica and Lucas, Ruth finally admits her guilt regarding the radio equipment that Veronica discovered in the council chambers.

In fact, Ruth was covering up for her daughter Leyla and Maya so that her daughter could escape with Izzy Back To The Future. Of course, Maya was lying to all of them.

La Brea S3x05 Levi passes away after saving Izzy Gavin and Sam

Sadly Levi is killed when he moves to save Helena, Gavin, Ty and Sam. Izzy, following Levi, almost saves him by shooting an arrow at the last soldier tracking them down. Unfortunately, the soldier gets off a round shooting Levi is the gut. Gavin, Izzy, Sam and Levi share a last few moments together. Levi and Gavin share “they are brothers to the end”.

Gavin, Izzy and Sam learn from Levi that Eve is in “long term detention” before he passes away in 10,000 BC. This was perhaps one of the saddest scenes in the series because everyone liked Levi who acted like a father during the time that Gavin was suffering from alcoholism during his periods of memory loss induced hallucinations.

La Brea S3x05 Gavin Izzy Sam and Helena enter the wormhole aurora portal to 1965

The final sequence finds us at the coordinates of where Eve, Josh and Riley are supposed to be held in detention. Instead we see a double aurora wormhole portal open in the clearing. Checking the coordinates on a handheld device that Levi had, we learn via a notation pointing to the red side of the aurora, confirmed by Helena, that the long term detention facilities are in 1965. Gavin, Izzy, Sam and Helena enter the wormhole portal to not only save their family members, but to destroy Maya’s insidious infrastructure once and for all time!

The episodic excitement builds to a crescendo in the fabulous fourth episode of La Brea after the remaining unrevealed character, named Helena (Emily Wiseman) surfaced packing a pistol at the end of the third episode “Maya” while she was tracking Gavin (Eoin Macken) with plans to kidnap him!

Seemingly a threat to Gavin, we will learn in “Fire Storm” that Helena is none other than Gavin’s sister who had been working with him to stop the nefarious forces who have been in control of the secret Time Travel Facilities for over five decades. Although Gavin’s memory was erased by an evil entity, we will learn the how and the why Gavin and Helena knew each other for over half a century dating back to 1965 where Helena was in possession of the Time Travel Computer Chip that they both stole. Subsequent to the theft the result was that Gavin’s memory was erased by Maya Schmidt (Claudia Ware) who claims she had misgivings about her orders to do so. We we mention in our analysis of the previous episode, Maya is our suspect for the root cause of all the problems our heroes have encountered.

In fact Maya, code named “Sierra“, unknown to the others, will expose herself as the principal villain when she attacks Scott (Rohan Mirchananey) and takes him prisoner because of an archeological secret she needs for her own evil purposes.

With all of these various story arc factors now in place, La Brea is superbly setup for the two part series finale “The Road Home” beginning next week on NBC!

The fourth episode of season three, written by Onalee Hunter Hughes and directed by Cherie Nowlan, opens in 2021 with the 10,000 BC version of Ty (Chiké Okonkwo) and Sam (Jon Seda) waiting in a vehicle.

They are waiting for Gavin to link up with a contact in a restaurant to gain access to a place near La Brea called the “Ladera Air Force Base” where the Time Travel Computer Chip is suspected to be located. We will soon learn that Gavin and Helena stashed it somewhere else safe.

Instead Helena shows up ordering Gavin to follow her out the backdoor of the restaurant at gunpoint.

Ty and Sam become suspicious upon entering the restaurant. With no sign of Helena or Gavin, they head out the back door of the eatery.

Unfortunately for Gavin, he is being kidnapped by Helena. Both escape but almost run over Ty and Sam in the process!

Back in 10,000 BC Gavin and Sam are communicating with whomever has Eve (Natalie Zea) using the computer salvaged from the Time Travel Facility before it was destroyed last season.

Whoever the person on the other end of the computer chat discussion orders Gavin to find the Time Travel Computer Chip stating that Eve’s life depends on it.

La Brea S3x04 Maya appears outside right after Sam and Gavin have used the computer chat
Image by Mark Taylor courtesy NBC

Suddenly, Maya appears outside asking Gavin if he remembers more about his erased memories, to which he replies “yes”. This is the first inkling viewers receive that Maya is the one behind everything that has been happening because she is obviously obsessed with the Time Travel Computer Chip. Gavin learns from Maya that it is the only existing functional prototype. Gavin goes on to share that he has remembered that the Chip is not in 10,000 BC and must be in 2021 but they have no way to retrieve it. This revelation appears to upset Maya.

La Brea S3x04 Sam says they can get a message to Scott in 2021
Image by Mark Taylor courtesy NBC

However, Sam says they can get a message to Gavin, Sam and 10,000 BC Ty in the future using the tar pits where Scott works in 2021. This perks up Maya’s interest. The group uses the entertainment industry ‘message in a bottle’ trope, sending Scott the details of the help they need.

The other aspect of the episode is the title “Fire Storm” when Izzy (Zyra Gorecki), interrupting their discussion, points out the huge wild fire which forces a mandatory evacuation of the village fort. Scott, Izzy, Gavin and Maya head to the famous La Brea tar pit number nine which is where Scott is working in 2021. They drop the message in a bottle despite Scott’s concern that his future self may not be be willing to help. Viewers know that Scott was a ‘pot head’ who kicked the habit only after he arrived in 10,000 BC

La Brea S3x04 Ty and Sam try to find Gavin and Helena

In 2021, Sam of the future and Ty of the past are left at the restaurant parking lot trying to figure out a way to find Gavin. After nearly being run over, they are with no prospects or luck whatsoever.

Thinking that all hope may be lost, Gavin’s cell phone suddenly goes off with a signal fort them. Low and behold, it’s Scott who is trying to reach Gavin by cell phone with the ‘message in a bottle’ all the way from 10,000 BC!

La Brea S3x04 Ty Sam and Scott link up in 2021

They proceed to Scott’s apartment where Ty and Sam explain to him what has been happening and that Gavin has been kidnapped. Scott believes them wanting to know if it’s time travel according to “The Terminator” or “Back To The Future” rules? This is an interesting aspect of the episode that only time travel story lovers will understand and appreciate.

Scott says he will only give the message to Gavin because he’s “seen every time travel movie ever made” and without Gavin, only his cell phone as proof, Ty seems like the villain to have stolen it because Scott comments on his British accent, referring the classic 1960 film “The Time Machine“. One of my favorite films with English characters based on the work of H.G. Wells.

Segue to 10,000 BC where the smoke from the wild fire is thickening during the evacuation from the village fort. Even constant complainer Judah (Damien Fotiou) is being cooperative! With the winds shifting, it appears the village fort will be burnt to the ground unless a group led by Ruth (Chantelle Jamieson), Veronica (Lily Santiago), Leyla (Edyll Ismail) and Lucas (Josh McKenzie) who can act on their plan to release the water from their dam on the river to create a fire break and save their village fort home!

Gavin, Izzy, Scott and Maya out together to locate a dual colored wormhole portal aurora. Gavin, still suffering from the memory elixir made from Psilocybin mushrooms Maya gave him in the last episode, stops with Izzy and has a flashback of memories that include Maya and her interest in Scott’s archeological knowledge documented in a white paper in the hands of the government contractors called “Universal Flora – A Study of What We Leave Behind”, the Time Travel Computer Chip, a person’s arm with three scars on it, and a dual colored wormhole portal aurora. Scott shares with Gavin and Izzy that his archeological paper was never published wondering why the government would be interested in it?

La Brea S3x04 Wildfire smoke is thickening

Scott tells Izzy and Gavin to head back while he continues on to get Maya who is near the river. During the ensuing separation from Gavin and Izzy, Maya makes her move and kidnaps Scott taking him to the military base.

Showing her true self to the viewers, we are now certain that Maya is only trying to obtain the Time Travel Computer Chip from Gavin in the future and Scott’s research knowledge for her own evil purposes.

We then learn in some detail that Scott archeological knowledge is somehow critical to Maya’s plan which he discovered when he observed three scars on her arm precisely as Gavin had described. Maya returns to Izzy and Gavin without Scott stating he was captured but she escaped after trying to fight them off. A bloody wound on Maya’s forehead convinces Gavin and Izzy.

La Brea S3x04 Helena takes Gavin to a safety deposit box

In 2021, Helena explains to Gavin that he was a willing participant in the terrible things that happened, including production of military fighter jets as time machines that Gavin flew into other time periods.

As things unraveled for the military with Gavin changing his mind about participating, Maya erased Gavin’s memory and ultimately came to Helena, his sister for help. Together Gavin and Helena stole the prototype Time Travel Computer Chip from Maya. Helena proves this by taking Gavin to a bank safety deposit box that requires both their thumbprints. Once opened, inside they find the prototype Time Travel Computer Chip! Driving to a lake near Los Angeles, Helena shares the rest of the story with Gavin; that it was their father who invented time travel, what was required to do so,  including the only prototype which they stole to stop the misuse of their fathers time travel technology in 1965, the main Time Travel Facility.

La Brea S3x04 Ty and Sam catch up with Gavin and Helena

Now desperately sought by Maya, who not only hijacked the program but the process of setting up Time Travel Facilities in multiple eras as well that became the root cause of the original Wormhole Sinkhole, everything that has transpired and the deaths of untold numbers of innocent people.

Instead, in 2021 Sam and Ty show up and convince Gavin the Time Travel Chip must be taken to 10,000 BC in order to save Eve per the ‘message in the bottle’. Helena says this is a mistake, however, Ty also wants to return to his wife Paara and volunteers to take the Chip back to 10,000 BC. Little do they all know that this is exactly what Maya wants then to do.

La Brea S3x04 Veronica extinguishes the fire storm saving the village fortAs the episode winds down to the end Veronica has saved day by exploding a hand made bomb and firing at it with a pistol all of which was her idea. Veronica damages the dam, releasing it’s water to extinguish the fire!

Lucas, who is mighty proud of Veronica because Veronica saved their home in 10,000 BC. The cinematography of the shot with the water escaping from the dam is another great image in the series that I enjoyed!

La Brea S3x04 Ty brings Sam and Gavin the Time Travel Computer Chip to 10,000 BC

We then find ourselves with Sam and Lucas as Ty arrives back at the village fort with the Time Travel Computer Chip. The final sequence features Maya looking at them knowing that Ty has the Chip!

Therefore, exploring the secret Time Travel Facility base in 10,000 BC and learning the fate of our heroes , viewers will have to wait until next weeks episode called “The Road Home Part 1” to find out. See you next week!!

La Brea S3x04 Maya sees the Time Travel Computer Chip is back in 10,000 BC

Lastly, viewers are eager for details as we approach the series finale since they have not seen main characters Eve, Levi (Nicholas Gonzales), Riley (Veronica St. Clair), Josh (Jack Martin) or supporting characters Paara (Tonantzin Carmelo), Silas (Mark Lee) or Maya’s daughter Petra (Asmara Feik) for some time. A question to consider is if viewers will we see them again, or will the series ‘write around’ their characters since it is known from several David Appelbaum interviews that some actors were unavailable due to scheduling change delays after the pandemic.

Join us the next two weeks on X (Twitter) to enjoy a fun live tweet for the final season of La Brea when we will find out the secrets of season three in 10,000 BC in order to finally find “The Road Home” Back To The Future for our heroes trapped in time!

Welcome Back La Brea and Wormhole Time Travel Science Fiction Lovers!

Maya is the third episode of season three of La Brea. The episode makes an important pivot in the story arc for viewers to learn more about an individual named Maya Schmidt (Claudia Ware) and how this development impacts the series final episodes. Maya is the person responsible for Gavin’s (Eoin Macken) memory loss because he became aware of a time travel military operation to 10,000 BC during the time he and Levi (Nicholas Gonzales) were in the Air Force together in their past lives in the future of the twenty first century.

As we will discover, Maya, military code named “Sierra“, apparently has misgivings about the orders she received to erase portions of Gavin’s memory that caused him to suffer visions and hallucinations that led to his bouts with alcohol abuse and estrangement from his friends and family.

A real question viewers should contemplate is whether Gavin should trust Maya at all?

La Brea S3x01 Dual Color Aurora Portal

In this episode Maya apparently seeks out Gavin in 10,000 BC to correct the wrongdoings she imposed on his life as well as planning to infiltrate the military base where it is suspected that Levi, Petra (Asmara Feik) and perhaps Eve (Natalie Zea) are being held hostage in an unknown time period.

On a parallel time track in 2021, viewers will recall that Ty (Chiké Okonkwo) was sucked into a wormhole portal aurora that sent him to early September 2021 where he links up with Sam (Jon Seda) and Gavin prior to the wormhole sinkhole as originally depicted in the pilot episode. Their mission is to locate and infiltrate the secret military Time Travel Facility base in 2021 that may be at the center of all the time disturbances.

Major outstanding questions exist in the time periods encompassing the third season. First is whether Eve, Levi and Petra are prisoner in 10,000 BC or has the military used a wormhole portal at their Time Travel Facility to take them, and perhaps others Back To The Future? Second is will Ty, Gavin and Sam in 2021 be able to rescue their family and friends without adversely affecting realities across time?

Much like the famous Back To The Future film trilogy where changes made in the past changed the future, an important consideration is will our heroes make changes in the past that will cause irrevocable changes rippling through time affecting the future forever?

Or is it that whatever happens is what was supposed to occur, therefore not disrupting the future timelines. Could it be that changes made in the future of 2021 (prior to the events in the pilot episode) result in the wormhole time portal sinkholes never happening in the first place? Whatever direction creator David Appelbaum will ultimately choose will be revealed over the course of the remaining episodes of La Brea!

La Brea S3x03 Gavin and Sam from 2021 with Ty from 10,000 BC
Image by Mark Taylor courtesy NBC

The third episode of season three was written by Rob Wright and directed by Cherie Nowlan opening with 2021 pre wormhole Sam and Gavin at a coffee shop restaurant with Ty from 10,000 BC where the three are discussing how to infiltrate the secret time travel military base to obtain answers on how they can save their family and friends trapped in 10,000 BC.

2021 Gavin, still suffering from gaps in his memory, says he doesn’t remember any secret program he was involved with about quantum physics (time travel) or anything else for that matter, although Gavin says he has been on the base “1,000 times”.

La Brea S3x03 Ty and Sam realize Gavin is not in the restroom
Image by Mark Taylor courtesy NBC

Ty assures Gavin that his 10,000 BC self was recalling details about the base and they must proceed there to find the connection to the wormhole portal auroras that have caused this disaster stating “the lives of the people you love depend on this”.

Gavin says he needs use the restroom and excuses himself. Actually Gavin is suffering from alcohol withdrawals and escapes to go find some booze. Ty and Sam end up having to track Gavin down. Naturally, they find Gavin in a local bar drinking.

La Brea S3x03 Gavin makes a map in 10,000 BC to find the military base

Back in 10,000 BC, Gavin is drawing a map from the village fort to the military air base for Sam and Scott (Rohan Mirchananey). Telling them it’s the only action open to them if they hope to find Maya, Eve, Levi, Petra, as well as Riley (Veronica St. Clair) and Josh (Jack Martin) who jumped into the dual colored, dual time travel destination aurora wormhole portal in an attempt to get to a hospital somewhere in time to save Riley who had been wounded by a Velociraptor in the season opening episode “Sierra“.

It must be mentioned in our analysis that the cinematography of all the 10,000 BC episodes have been and still are superb. Each is replete with beautiful scenes of the wilderness of Australia where much of the series was filmed.

These scenes, in conjunction with realistic dinosaurs and the time travel portals make the series a wonder to behold each week that many viewers, including this editor, will certainly miss.

Gavin and Sam assure Scott that their mission is only reconnaissance at this point heading out from the safety of the village fort to perform their task of locating the mysterious time travel military base which appears to have been the root cause of all the troubles our hero survivors have experienced.

La Brea S3x03 Giant rhino charges Gavin and Sam

Speaking of dinosaurs, on the route to the time travel military base that Gavin has pieced together from returning memory fragments, he and Sam encounter a huge prehistoric rhinoceros that is intent on stomping them to smithereens!

Running for their lives, the only thing that saves them is that they unknowingly enter a minefield, one of which explodes, killing the rhino thereby saving their lives. The good news is that they are on the right track because only a military base would require minefields as a defensive perimeter.

La Brea S3x03 Gavin and Sam find a path through the minefield

Fortunately, Gavin and Sam find a safe path through the minefield thanks to someone who left stacked stones marking a pathway out.

The bad news is the minefield explosion apparently alerts members of the secret time travel program from the military base. Unfortunately this is precisely what happens when military helicopters are soon observed overhead followed by ground troops who easily capture Sam and Gavin holding them at gunpoint and tying them to a tree.

Back To The Future in 2021 Ty seeks out his estranged wife Sophie (Annabelle Stephenson) who wants nothing to do with him. The encounter reinforces Ty’s resolve to do the right thing to correct his past mistakes of criticizing her, blaming her for their marriage problems.

Viewers cannot help but wonder if Ty of the past will be able to repair his own challenges with his wife of the future? We shall learn more about Ty and Sophie later in the episode.

Meanwhile Ty and 2021 Sam locate Gavin who plans on boozing it up in a local bar rather than face the difficult choice of infiltration of the time travel base.

Ty shares a story from his past that caused a disaster for his wife in the future but is unable to get her to listen to him any longer.

Gavin agrees to attend an alcoholic anonymous meeting where Ty’s wife will be to share a story in the AA meeting that will change her life for the better.

Segue to 10,000 BC where we are with soon to be parents Veronica (Lily Santiago) and Lucas (Josh McKenzie) who are chatting about Lucas’s desire to join Ruth (Chantelle Jamieson) in the village fort leadership council.

Viewers will recall that Veronica and Lucas are planning on staying in the past since neither had much of a future in 2021. Interestingly, Ruth believes Veronica is a leader and suggests she join the village fort council which at first does not sit well with Lucas. Later Lucas realizes his selfishness and embraces the idea.

La Brea S3x03 Maya tells Gavin she was going to be a whistleblower

Back to Gavin and Sam tied to a tree, Maya also heard the landmine explosion and has been watching them the entire time when they were captured in 10,000 BC by armed soldiers from the time travel military base located nearby.

Cutting Gavin and Sam loose, Maya is as surprised to see Gavin as he is seeing her. For some reason not delineated at this time Maya decides to share details of the military weaponizing the use of time travel to be able to control events in history to their liking.

La Brea S3x03 Gavin drinks Mayas elixer to remember what was erased

Gavin, having learned too much about the military use of time travel was subjected to biological memory erasure by Maya to keep the dark secret from being revealed to anyone. Maya, disgusted with the corruption of the powerful time travel secret military program, says that she planned on becoming a whistleblower but was captured with her daughter Petra and sent to 10,000 BC for imprisonment to keep their military secrets safe.

Gavin shares with Maya that he has had fragments of his memory return about why the military are tampering with past history timelines. Maya then shares that she may be able to restore Gavin’s memory before they enter the time travel base in 10,000 BC.

La Brea S3x03 Izzy takes care of Gavin after the Psilocybin

Maya further reveals that she is an expert in psychology operations. She makes Gavin an elixir of potentially poisonous Psilocybin mushrooms to expand his mind thereby unlocking his memories.

Gavin drinks the mixture causing a flood of memories related to his classified time travel military operations that includes the dual colored wormhole portal and a digital safe combination where an advanced computer chip that controls time travel is located. Gavin passes out and is taken to the village fort to recover.

La Brea S3x03 Izzy and Leyla become more than friends
Image by Mark Taylor courtesy NBC

In a side story, we are with Leyla (Edyll Ismail) and Izzy (Zyra Gorecki) who have bonded as result of survivor the pterodactyls together in the previous episode “Don’t Look Up“.  This teamwork is a factor that will become important when a prehistoric boar attacks them and Leyla becomes trapped in a tar pit which the series namesake is famous for.

Fortunately, both escaped, further strengthening their bond of friendship that serves them well later when the boar returns and they work together to kill the beast. In the end it becomes apparent that Leyla and Izzy are becoming more than friends.

La Brea S3x03 Gavin attends AA to encourage Tys wife to seek another path

At the bar in 2021, Ty and Sam convince Gavin to help infiltrate the secret time travel military base with Ty using psychological techniques of Ty’s mistakes with his wife to encourage him. Gavin overcomes his fears and addiction when Ty shares that it was his own failures that forced his wife to drink excessively and drive, ultimately putting an innocent victim into a coma when she had an drunken auto accident.

The story stuns Gavin back to reality. Sam, Ty and Gavin head out to infiltrate the secret time travel military base but first stop by an alcoholics anonymous meeting helping Ty’s wife avoid the drunken auto accident.

La Brea S3x03 Gavin Sam and Maya are convinced someone wants Gavins time travel memories

As the episode approaches the end, we are in 10,000 BC with Sam, Izzy and Maya as Gavin regains consciousness from his mind expanding experience that helped him regain more of his erased memories.

Sam, Gavin and Maya come to the conclusion that whoever is behind all this wants the information that has been locked up in Gavin’s mind. All of them vow to find out who it is and why in the future while they are in 10,000 BC.

The final sequence finds us Ty in 2021 after he helps his ex-wife Sophie decide to seek therapy saving her from the horrible automobile accident in the original timeline.

They hug and Ty wishes her good luck in the future, now that she has a future to live again.

Viewers feel good about this development knowing that Ty has corrected one of the nightmares from his life that has plagued him for a long time. More importantly, Ty has changed the future. What are the ramifications of Ty altering the future? We simply do not know yet.

Gavin, Sam and Ty head towards the secret time travel military base. Unknown to them, they are being followed by an enigmatic woman named Helena played by famous Australian actress Emily Wiseman in a guest starring role.

All of this leaves the task of infiltration of the secret bases in 10,000 BC and 2021 until next weeks episode called “Fire Storm”. See you then!

    Greetings fellow Comic-Con enthusiasts!

    San Diego Comic Con Logo
    Images courtesy Comic-Con International

This year’s event was quite the experience. Having attended San Diego Comic-Con since 2012, I can attest that it has always been the most significant, wildest, and most exciting show. Even during the pandemic, when everything went virtual, Comic-con remained a beacon of hope for us who love this event. But thankfully, in 2022, the convention came back in full force and was better than ever before.

However, I learned that major studios like Marvel, Disney, and HBO (now called Max) wouldn’t attend the 2023 convention. Initially, I thought it wouldn’t be an issue, but then the writer’s and actor’s strikes happened, and many people thought it spelled doom for Comic-Con. Nevertheless, I remained hopeful because I knew that the original incarnation of Comic-Con was all about comics and always will be. Even if some parts of the convention are affected by strikes or other issues, we will always have a love for comics that brings us together.

Despite the recent SAG/AFTRA strike, some actors could still attend because they had other projects that fell outside the strike’s parameters. One such actor was recent Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis. She was promoting her upcoming comic book called Mother Nature. The line to get in the room was long, and I was worried I wouldn’t be able to get in.

There were about ten seats left in the way back. I was one of the lucky ones to get those precious final seats. We were all so relieved to get in as we waited over an hour. It was worth it. The panel and Jamie Lee were great. I had a great time. It was fantastic to see Jamie Lee venturing into the comic world and embracing that genre.

    2023-07-23 SDCC Vendors Room

Things were different at Comic-Con regarding entertainment panels, and that’s okay. The megalithic Hall H was used, but not as much as it typically is. Usually, Warner Brothers, Netflix, HBO, and other studios have panels for their most popular shows and movies in Hall H, where attendees often camp out for days in advance to get a front-row seat. That was missing this year, albeit there were a few panels in Hall H, but nothing like in the past. In fact there were no Sunday panels in Hall H or many of the other huge ballrooms. As a result, the convention floor for exhibits, artists, vendors, and other panel rooms, particularly the smaller ones,  were a lot busier with all the people who usually would be in panels in Hall H, Ballroom 20, or the Indigo Ballroom at the Hilton Bayfront hotel choosing other options.

The vendors exhibit hall floor was busier this year, and lines were capped quicker than usual. Merchandise was being bought faster, which was terrific for the vendors counting on the attendees to buy their wonderful wares. In fact, several vendors sold out and had to bring in additional stock. It also gave independent artists more exposure as well. More people on the floor meant more people venturing to “Artists Alley” to discover the newest art and their fabulous offerings.

I saw more people at the comic book vendor’s booths this year, which was beautiful. Collectibles were always part of the fold when it came to Comic-Con. You can find pretty much anything that interests a collector. Two of my favorites were a Pee Wee Herman figurine and the robot from Bad Robot Productions.

The bigger booths were missing from the floor: Netflix, ABC Disney, HBO, Marvel, and Warner Brothers to name but a few.

One major vendor that was missing that I always enjoy was Sideshow Collectibles.

Sideshow is always a highlight and one of the busiest booths on the floor. I always loved seeing the incredible statutes displayed at that booth.

Instead, this year Sideshow had its own virtual convention that featured its most popular and newest statues. I hope that they will return next year.

    Abe Sapien-ECC Booth-SDCC 2023

With Sideshow not a part of the convention floor this year, that gave way to other vendors to take its place. Lego had paid homage to the Blockbuster video stores we all loved in the 80s and set up a “Brickbuster” store on the convention floor. Funko and Mondo again were the most significant booths on the floor, and lines there were hours.

Thankfully Star Wars had their own booth since they had no panels this year. Mattel Creations, Entertainment Earth, Super 7, Dark Horse Comics, and IDW all had their booths running as usual, making the floor feel like home. Even though Sideshow was not present, there are always fun statues to see. One of my favorite vendors is Elite Creature Collectibles; their busts are incredible and very life-like. The one I loved the most was the bust of Abe Sapien from the Hellboy movies.

John & Kathy Romita panel-SDCC 2023Smaller panels featuring comic artists were highlighted and focused despite needing more significant panels. I went to the John Romita, Jr panel, and it was terrific. He and his wife Kathy held court and discussed his career and famous father. I had heard of Romita (both Senior and Junior) through friends of mine that are comic book nerds.

I had a great time in the panel and learned more about how comic books get published and what an incredible life he has had, and the dedication it takes to do what he does. The endless hours, Kathy chimed in that she should write a book about being the wife of a comic book artist.

    Conan the Barbarian panel-SDCC 2023

    Matt Murray & Jim Zub-Conan the Barbarian panel-SDCC 2023

I also sat in on a Conan the Barbarian panel with editor Matt Murray, Jim Zub, and Fred Malmberg all of whom are associated with this superb new comic graphic novel.

The panel was produced by by Titan Comics and Heroic Signatures who are launching a new monthly Conan the Barbarian graphic novel series.

It was a fun panel that I really enjoyed!

As I have a good friend who is a die-hard Conan the Barbarian lover, I learned a bit more about the famous sword-wielding hero that is not apparent in the movie renditions of this famous character.

The Conan the Barbarian graphic novel creators revealed that Solomon Kane will return to the fold. I know some people will be happy to hear that. Below the Conan trailer, we include a fun interview courtesy of Fanbase Press.

Due the cancellation of many panels this year, I could also explore the convention floor and find more vendors I would have commonly overlooked. As with all conventions of significant size, everything will have pros and cons (pun intended).

One panel I could attend this year, which I unfortunately missed last year, was for Stern Pinball. I had the pleasure of interviewing Jody Dankberg about the company and any future endeavors the previous year. It was much fun, and they let us know that Venom was the newest addition to their comic book pinball machines. I did not get a chance to play the pinball machines like last year, but I have played many of their machines in the past, and they are always a lot of fun.

The other wonderful thing I love about San Diego Comic-Con is that there are always things to do, whether in the Convention Center itself or at the Marriott Marquis, outside behind the Convention Center, at Petco Park or just enjoying the always outstanding Cosplay.

There is always something to do for comics, entertainment and games fans for all visitors to San Diego. Thankfully the weather this year was not as hot as it usually is. It was a little bit odd with light rain in the weather, but everything was still fun, nonetheless.

    2023-07-23 Gaslamp Quarter
Image courtesy Gaslamp Quarter Dot Org

Also, the great thing about San Diego is that the historic Gaslamp Quarter or district that always has themed restaurants during Comic-Con. You will find restaurants modeled after Bob’s Burgers, or Interview with the Vampire. I went to one modeled after Mooby’s from the Kevin Smith movies. I went there with a few friends, and we had burgers and beer, and it was decorated in that fashion of the film, plus there was also merchandise. So it was nice to escape the Convention Center for some time. But again, the Gaslamp Quarter always has themed restaurants which is so much fun!

The activation’s, as always, had long lines this year, but that’s par for the course regarding Comic Con. The most significant activation this year was the Jurassic Park 30th Anniversary which featured the top scenes from this iconic movie. We include a fabulous video of the exciting experience courtesy of IGN below for your enjoyment.

Another fun exclusive to San Diego Comic-Con 2023 was the Quantum Leap activation provided by the great folks at NBC Universal Entertainment.

With expanded coverage as compared to SDCC 2022, over the four days of Comic-Con events, located across from the convention center near the entrance to the GaslampQuarter, Quantum Leap fans could “leap” into the terrific television worlds of “Law & Order,” “SVU” and “Organized Crime,” “The Voice” and “Chucky” to help stabilize the timelines with the help of the “Quantum Leap” time travel team!

SDCC is always wonderful to experience. Just be prepared for long lines in the sun and always take along lots of sunscreen and plenty of water to stay hydrated. Another fun experience was strolling through Lazlo’s garden from What We Do In The Shadows. We include a cool video below about this fun experience courtesy of Through the Lens of Lady Kay B.

What We Do in the Shadows installation-SDCC 2023However, it was a shock to the system for many people who are usually at Comic-Con for the TV shows or movies coming down the pipeline. People adjusted well, and they could have a good time no matter what. They could still enjoy themselves even without the big panels, no matter what. I know I did. And you learn new things about comic books, games, Cosplay that you didn’t even know about, and that’s what’s always fun about these conventions. You find new and exciting things to be happy about. Overall, it was a fun time, and I look forward to attending Comic-Con again in 2024, regardless of whether it has the studio’s presence.

Lastly, I’m in solidarity with both the writers and actors as I am both in real life and will pursue a career later in my life as a director. I know there was talk about the strikes; there was concern about the future of Comic Con and what would happen if the strikes continued. I hope you enjoyed this article and will take comfort in knowing that Comic-Con has been going strong for 50-plus years and doesn’t plan on slowing down anytime soon!

Welcome Back La Brea Science Fiction Time Travel Drama Lovers!

La Brea has proven to be an exciting new science fiction time travel wormhole based drama series. Ratings for the first two weeks have been strong with 6.2 million viewers for the Pilot episode with a .59 share and 4.9 million viewers with a .60 share for the second episode “Day Two”.

What we have learned so far is that it all began when a wormhole tore open a hole in time near the famous La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles. The actors are believable with Natalie Zea as Eve Harris, Eoin Macken as Gavin Harris, Jon Seda as Doctor Sam Velez, Chiké Okonkwo as Ty Coleman, Karina Logue as Marybeth Hays, Zyra Gorecki as Izzy Harris, Jack Martin as Josh Harris, Veronica St. Clair as Riley Velez, and Rohan Mirchandaney  as Scott Israni, with supporting actors that include Stephen Lopez as Billy Fisher, Pacharo Mzembe as Tony Greene, Chloe De Los Santos as Lilly Castillo, Josh McKenzie as Lucas Hayes, Nicholas Gonzalez as Levi Delgado, Virginie Laverdure as Dr. Sophia Nathan, and Ione Skye  as Jessica Harris.

All are struggling to survive in their new reality, both those trapped in prehistoric time in the Los Angeles basin and those trying to rescue them in contemporary times.

The wormhole, which has remained open throughout the first three episode’s, has found our survivors, heroes and villains alike, dealing with huge snarling Smilodon or Saber-Toothed Tiger’s and vicious wolves that have claimed the lives of one person and severely injured two others.

In each case, the wild beasts have simply been looking for lunch or dinner per their natural instincts. Can anyone honestly blame the critters for doing what comes to them naturally?

La Brea S1x02 prehistoric human ritual
Ancient ritual stones. Image courtesy NBC

Of interest is the discovery of wild animal traps and ancient stone ritual monuments obviously built by prehistoric human beings in the Los Angeles area near Beverly Hill many millennia 0,000 ago.

The reason that the wormhole reality bridges that have materialized has not been made clear. However, one of the persons in contemporary times, a former air force pilot has been seeing hallucinations of his family in the past has become of great interest to the United States military while he deals with an unsettling discovery about his family.

At the end of the “Day Two” episode, the government decides to send a military expedition through the wormhole to investigate the phenomena from the other side. Unfortunately, unintended consequences will become manifest!

For your enjoyment, before beginning our review and analysis of “The Hunt”, we include some fun La Brea cast moments while they are off set courtesy of the great team at NBC.

    The Hunt:

La Brea S1x02 Josh is saved
Natalie Zea as Eve Harris, Jack Martin as Josh Harris, Veroncia St. Clair as Riley Valez. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

“The Hunt” episode was written by Jose Molina and directed by Adam Davidson. It opens with Eve, Josh, Riley and Dr. Velez together in one of the larger vehicles setup as a medical triage area to care for the injured time travelers Josh and Dr. Sam Velez.

Back at the El Segundo Air Force Base Gavin is being told some news he does not want to hear. More on that later.

It is apparent that Riley is not happy with Eve for leaving her father injured in the wild because Eve chose to bring much needed medical supplies to treat her son Josh.

We observe that Josh, thanks to the medical advice from Sam, is doing much better. Josh’s fever from the infection caused by being bitten by wild wolves has broken and is now strong enough to walk on his own again.

Although Sam was ultimately saved, young Riley is holding a grudge, but admits she would have probably done the same thing if the situation had been reversed. Eve offers to bring Riley some found in an attempt to break the tension. Riley says “I will not stop you”,  making an empty belly a good attitude adjuster for young Riley!

La Brea S1x03 Sam regains consciousness

Hopefully, since Sam regains consciousness later in “The Hunt”, Riley will set aside her grudge after she learns that it was Sam who actually told Eve to head back to the survivor’s camp with the medical supplies for Josh?

It could also be as many viewers suspect that Josh and Riley will grow closer, ending up in a romantic relationship that will help ease the conflict that exists between Eve and Riley.

    We shall see.

Only time (pun intended) will tell.

More on the romance factor later in our review of “The Hunt”.

La Brea S1x03 Eve and Josh get ready for The Hunt

Eve and Josh head outside to the food line setup by the traffic cop who was the first person to fall into the wormhole sinkhole witnessed in the Pilot episode.

We are happy that the traffic cop survived, answering a question posed in the second episode as to exactly what had happened to her. Click here to read our analysis review of the Day Two episode.

Mary Beth, the crooked cop and known protein bar thief, is bitching as usual because that the traffic cop has demonstrated leadership by rationing the food. Leadership is something Mary Beth obviously lacks. All the food and water that is available has been placed on a blue tarp after being collected from local stores, warehouses, and vehicles in the vicinity of the survivor’s camp. After three weeks, it is obvious that there really is not very much food left.

La Brea S1x03 Josh taunts Mary Beth

Josh taunts Mary Beth face to face with “What’s the matter, don’t you have some protein bars hidden somewhere?”. Go Josh!

Eve tells Mary Beth to go enjoy her food elsewhere, to which Mary Beth sarcastically retorts “In a couple of days, I’m sure we are going to become good friends”.

Let’s be honest; Mary Beth, whether in prehistoric times, or in the present day, is without a doubt, one utterly detestable human being!

Perhaps Mary Beth will become the next Red Shirt? We can only hope so!

La Brea S1x03 Giant ground sloth
A giant ground sloth appears. Image courtesy NBC

Back in the food line, a scraggly looking man who says he has been on a “juice cleansing” for a month and attempts to steal a Baby Ruth candy bar. Scraggly is stopped in the act by Josh and Lucas. Scraggly gives back the Baby Ruth contemptuously just as a new threat appears out of the brush, a giant ground sloth!

The giant ground sloth lumbers into camp and scarf’s down all the remaining food as the survivor’s scramble for their lives. Scott Israni ends the prologue with the quip to Scraggly “I guess no one is getting a Baby Ruth now”!

We segue to the El Segundo Air Force Base where Gavin is watching preparations for an experimental aircraft after an earlier attempt to send a drone to enter the wormhole sinkhole fails The drone lost contact at the event horizon when trying to reach prehistoric times on the other side of the wormhole sinkhole.

La Brea S1x03 Gavin leaves the hanger
Eoin Macken as Gavin Harris. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

Gavin is observed leaving the hanger after chatting with Dr. Sophia Nathan about his desire to volunteer as the pilot for the rescue mission has been rejected. We have learned that Gavin is one of the best experimental Air Force aircraft pilots in his past life.

Sophia reminds Gavin that he is no longer in the Air Force, and therefore he cannot fly the mission. Sophia comforts Gavin with the fact that he will play a critical role in the mission by delineating the maps the Air Force has prepared regarding Los Angeles in the prehistoric past.

Sophia informs Gavin that an extensive series of planned missions to rescue the survivor’s will be executed until all those trapped in the prehistoric past have been saved.

Not be deterred, Gavin suggests that his former colleague, Levi Delgado, would be the next best choice.

Sophia agrees with Gavin’s assessment stating “He’s on the list”.

La Brea S1x03 Eve heads off to hunt rabbits after telling the truth to the survivors

Back to the survivor’s subsequent to the giant ground sloth snacking on the their food, everyone wonders how it got there? Scott, our resident anthropologist from the La Brea Tar Pits Museum informs them the creature is extinct, and further narrows the timeline to 12,000 years ago or 10,000 B.C which is when the ground sloth became extinct. Everyone is dumbfounded.

Eve shares that she saw a Saber-Toothed Tiger in the forest and points to the mountains which are identical to the Hollywood Hills, informing everyone that they are in Los Angeles, but in the distant past. Eve confirms these facts, and that like it or not, “We all fell through that light” (wormhole) and have become time travelers!

With their food eaten by the giant ground sloth, Eve makes another declaration “We need to hunt”. Lucas Hayes says he is leaving to find someone who knows where they really are. Eve and Ty head out to hunt. Lucas with his bad attitude could become the next Red Shirt? Not just yet!

La Brea S1x03 Levi Delgado flashes back
Nicholas Gonzalez as Levi Delgado. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

Next we are with Levi Delgado who is coming in for a landing at the El Segundo Air Force Base. A flashback occurs with Levi visiting the Harris family shortly after Izzy’s leg injury.

We learn that Gavin and Levi are best pals and that Izzy refers to him as “Uncle Levi” in addition to Levi warning Gavin to seek help about his hallucinations or he stands to lose his family.

Gavin admits that the hallucination visions in his head “have taken everything me”, nevertheless wishing Levi good luck on his next assignment in Germany. The flashback fades as Gavin and Levi meet in the present in the hanger where Levi says that he is “trying to wrap his around it” now that Gavin’s hallucinations have proven to be true and correct.

Sophia meets them and says “Let’s get to it”.

Later aboard the aircraft, Levi admits to Gavin that he had an affair with Eve, which is why he went to Germany. Gavin says that is in the  past, and the only thing that is important is the mission and to save his family. Levi swears an oath to Gavin.

La Brea S1x03 Eve, Ty, Lucas and Mary Beth trapped in a cave
Karina Logue as Marybeth Hayes, Josh McKenzie as Lucas Hayes, Chiké Okonkwo as Ty Coleman, Natalie Zea as Eve Harris. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

Back in the prehistoric past, Eve is making animal traps when Ty joins her. We learn that Eve grew up on a farm and she learned trapping because her Dad, who wanted her to be a boy, taught her about hunting for wild game.

When trying to find out about Ty, he deflects, telling Eve if they are going to catch any rabbits, they had “better be quiet”.

Later Ty and Eve are successful in trapping rabbits for food but a giant bear shows up before they can get back to camp. Using the rabbit to distract the bear, Eve and Ty run away ultimately becoming trapped in a cave.

The next scene finds us with Mary Beth walking in the woods. She has followed her son Lucas into the woods asking what he is doing there? Lucas answers by throwing a log on the ground that trips a snare revealing a Saber-Toothed Tiger trap with sharp pointed wooden spears. Lucas let’s his Mom know that he found it yesterday with a tiger in it, but today, the dead tiger was gone and the trap had been reset by someone. Both set out to find whoever built the tiger trap, instead going another way, find Eve and Ty in the cave.

La Brea S1x03 Riley saves her father
Veroncia St. Clair as Riley Valez, Jack Martin as Josh Harris, Rohan Mirchandaney as Scott Israni, Jon Seda as Dr. Samuel Valez. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

Back at the triage bus, Sam has regained consciousness but his legs are paralyzed by fluid swelling that is pinching his nerves in his back.

Sam tells Riley she must perform a procedure or he may never be able to use his legs again.

Riley, a medical school dropout is terrified but has no choice if her Dad is ever going to walk again.

Scott and Josh know where a car is located whose trunk is loaded with heroin that will be used to relieve Sam’s pain during the operation.

Riley is panicked when Sam passes out from the heroin, but Josh encourages her to complete the procedure. Riley looks lovingly towards Josh for his help during this difficult time.

Ultimately Riley saves Sam from being paralyzed for life. Great job Riley!

La Brea S1x03 A startling discovery
Josh McKenzie as Lucas Hayes, Karina Logue as Marybeth Hayes, Natalie Zea as Eve Harris. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

The episode winds down with a startling discovery by Eve, Ty, Lucas and Mary Beth. A dried out corpse is found wearing a sweatshirt from contemporary times!

The corpse has been there for many years, meaning that the corpse never found a way back home.

On the way back to the camp, our four cave dwellers find a stash of wild edible mushrooms that will feed all of them for the foreseeable future. Prompted by Lucas, they all agree not to tell anybody about finding the corpse in the cave.

Meanwhile Lucas confronts his Mom about “pulling the trigger” on the corpse. This means that Mary Beth knew about the wormhole and had somehow pushed the victim into it to hide her crime some time before the current cataclysm had ever occurred. More on this enigma will hopefully be revealed in future episodes.

Next Ty confesses that he has a brain tumor and will not survive over the long term in the prehistoric past. Ty plans to use his gun to end it all when the time comes. However, he asks Eve to take the gun and put Ty out of his misery. Eve confesses her own guilt that she was having an affair and is ashamed about it.

La Brea S1x03 Experimental aircraft enters the wormhole

The final sequences in “The Hunt” depicts Levi taking off from the El Segundo Air Force Base in the experimental aircraft. While Levi is  descending into the wormhole sinkhole in modern times, everyone is hoping the mission is a success.

Gavin is in the control room.

Izzy is in the waiting room.

The tension is so thick you could not even cut it with a knife!

Suddenly, as the aircraft approaches the wormhole event horizon, the aircraft computer controls are lost. Levi tries in vain to fly it manually as contact with the control room is severed. An unmitigated disaster for all involved.

La Brea S1x03 Levi is the new arrival
Levi the new arrival. Image courtesy NBC

The scene fades to Eve where we witness her looking skyward hopefully.

Gavin leaves the control room and finds Izzy to give her a much needed hug.

The last shot before we fade to black is of Levi who, thank goodness, was able to bail out of the experimental aircraft.

We then see Levi in his parachute. He is alright, hanging from a tree. Be certain to tune in next week as the final scene sets up the fourth exciting episode called “The New Arrival”.

After our review and analysis of “The Hunt”, we include a sneak peek  of what is coming up next in season one of La Brea.

Debris Review Episode 13 – Celestial Body Series Finale? – The Quest for Humanity to Save Debris!

    Debris banner

    Hello Debris fans,

Debris Poster - Click to visit Debris at NBC
Images and videos courtesy NBC Universal

Well here we are at the end…or is it?

With the announcement of NBC not renewing the beloved Debris series for a second season, this episode leaves even more unanswered questions. I am, as are countless fans, a bit disappointed with the cancellation of such a fabulous show.

Word of the cancellation sent a multitude of tweet storms voicing the utter disappointment, shock, disbelief, and denial that accompanies a wrong decision by the network. Alas, if it were up to me, I would have kept the property on for another season at least. Knowing how the showrunner/creator J. H. Wyman is, he no doubt had a whole story arc planned out for a second (and possibly more) seasons.

Fans of Joel’s know that his intelligent series are never cookie cutter, formulaic series, they are always complex and cerebral. Sadly, the majority of viewers seem to not want to think when watching television. It appears that they would rather just be entertained and not have to use their brains. As in life the majority rules, so the fate of Debris series was decided by the that majority. I am hoping that another platform will pick up Debris series, perhaps Netflix or Amazon may throw their hat in hat ring. Oh well, let us begin, shall we?

This episode was written by the maestro himself and once again directed by Eagle Egilsson. Throughout the series one thing has remained constant, the incredible scenery of Canada that has served as a backdrop to the other cities it was emulating. Michael Wale is the cinematographer for this episode and his use of the natural landscape is beautiful and breathtaking. Often times the environment or city is another character in certain series, lending itself and all its beauty to the story and often helping give the viewer a better understanding of the story. This episode is no exception, the rocky terrain and mountain side provide a stark backdrop to the beginning of this episode.

    Celestial Body:

Debris S1x13 Finola and Bryan confirm Anson Ash has escaped
Debris S1x13 Finola and Bryan confirm Anson Ash has escaped. Image by: James Dittiger, courtesy NBC

With Bryan (Jonathan Tucker) and Finola (Riann Steele) being informed that Anson Ash (Scroobius Pip) has escaped from prison by teleporting out, we come to find that his body was riddled with Debris. This information definitely ups the ante regarding helping George Jones (Tyrone Benskin) to stay hidden.

George in the meantime is watching out for any strange goings in at the facility he has been hiding out at trying to figure out the latest debris. He sees a strange entity that looks like a human but is not actually fully formed. When Bryan and Finola come to pick him up, he is definitely on edge. Bryan and Finola sense this tension, leave it alone. Later we will find out this is an apparent mistake by taking no action.

George dons his now infamous tin foil cape and finally goes with them insisting that they make a very quick getaway. This new Debris incident has brought a number of people to this remote area (the beautiful mountain side) where the people are all facing East for some unknown reason. The people are absolutely still, like chess pieces but experience odd emotional outbursts like crying and laughing in unison.

Debris S1x13 George, Bryan and Finola head to the incident where people are facing east
Debris S1x13 George, Bryan and Finola head to the incident where people are facing east. Image by James Dittiger/NBC)

George hypothesizes that they all must have come into contact with the alien objects before hand and are now instructed to come to this place for a specific reason. Bryan and Finola are worried that the same fate will befall these people as did their colleagues back at the lab who all died after two hours. The race to find the cause and fix the matter is of the utmost.

Bryan then brings up a question to Finola that she may not want to hear. Bryan asks if they can still trust her father? If George does remember correctly, or if “Influx” planted those memories, or information in his brain when he was reanimated. I can understand his hesitation especially since George has been acting strangely since Bryan and Finola tracked George down, picked him up, and saved him several Debris series episodes ago.

Debris S1x13 Julia tries to teach her son Dario how to speak again

Next, we get to see Julia Maddox (Jennifer Copping) with her son Dario (Christian Rose) teaching him words. You can see the anguish on her face and the utter guilt that she still has because of the accident she caused putting her son in this wheelchair. We had the immense pleasure of interviewing Jennifer Copping before the finale, and I can say what a great person as well as talented actress she is!

Jennifer gave us a hint during her interview about the finale episode in as much as she said it will be emotional and she was right. Her emotion came through with such sadness that you could feel her pain in every gesture she made toward Dario. It was a harrowing scene to say the least because you were left with a feeling of dread.

Debris S1x13 Irina and Maddox meet to swap Debris offering Irina another door for her
Debris S1x13 Irina and Maddox meet to swap Debris offering Irina another door for her. Image courtesy NBC

Craig Maddox (Norbert Leo Butz) has been a complete enigma since the beginning of the Debris series. Viewers were never quite sure if Maddox was a good guy, or a bad guy until the “Celestial Body” episode.

Maddox always toed that line of greater good or was perceived as a spy for the enemy. This is the confirmation that Maddox has been a good guy all along and we see that at the end of this episode.

Craig Maddox meets again with the Russian operative Irina (Andrea Stefancikova) that we have seen before in the Debris series. Maddox has been seeking and wants to obtain a specific part of the alien artifacts that deals with a special type of communications. Viewers may have thought this alien object that Irina brings to their meeting dealt with electronic communications.

Debris S1x13 Irina looks at Maddox after he says there is another door for you Irina
Debris S1x13 Irina looks at Maddox after he says there is another door for you Irina. Image courtesy NBC

We will learn later in this episode that Craig Maddox knows something about this specific alien artifact that Irina is bringing to him. We do not know what that is at this point. This factor reveals the actual motivation of Craig Maddox that is both sincere and is not related to Andrea being a spy.

We witness Maddox sincerely offering “another door for you Irina”. Reading between the lines, this obviously has a meaning, a way for Irina to defect from Russia to the United States.

Andrea told us in her wonderful interview that Maddox had offered to help Irina defect in exchange for the alien object that he wants, but that part was unfortunately left on the cutting room floor.

This scene, though, again does not yet give us the full picture of what Maddox is up to, and still has us wondering if he maybe killed her agent boss after getting the alien artifacts he wanted or is it something more sinister?

Debris S1x13 People with newborn infants are all facing east
Debris S1x13 People with newborn infants are all facing east. Image courtesy NBC

We learn that the common thread is that all the people facing East at the mountain location is that they all have newborns, which George comments on as the reason they are all currently connected. He mentions “energy emotional emergence”. The heightened emotional state they are all in now that they have a newborn. The highs and lows of it, the lack of sleep, the worry, the extra added stress. The people run through a gamut of emotions from laughter to anger due to them being emotionally connected. It is a fascinating scene to watch unfold as you can see how each individual handles those emotions. Bryan is perplexed to say the least while Finola is preoccupied with helping her father.

Joel’s theme of human connection is predominant in this episode. This episode is probably the most emotionally charged episode of the season. From the people in the grips of the debris to what transpires later on certainly gave the viewers something to think about.

Debris S1x13 Otto Loeb and Anson head to the Debris site
Debris S1x13 Otto, Loeb and Anson head to the Debris site. Image courtesy NBC

What made this particular episode the most epic episode in the history of television (in my opinion) is the addition of the absolutely wonderful, spectacular, brilliant John Noble as Otto.

I was beyond happy to see John be a part of this episode. Since seeing him on Fringe I have become a lifelong fan and ANYTIME John is on my television it elevates that episode or series that much higher. I am also so happy that he got to use his native Australian accent.

John Noble’s character of Otto is seen with Anson and Loeb (Ben Cotton) at a gas station where he just exited out of the station store. When Anson questions Otto about what he had done, Anson goes into the store and finds victims in twisted, compact states. It is creepy and telling about who Otto really is.

Debris S1x13 Otto sets up a device to stop the Debris from affecting people

Seeing John again reminded me of the character he played on Fringe either as Walter Bishop or as Walternate. Otto is definitely neither, he makes Walternate look like a pussy cat in comparison. With the leather jacket, jeans and tattoos, Otto far surpasses Walternate in being a bad ass. I do love that Joel keeps it all in the family. That we have seen two actors from the Fringe universe in Debris, Sebastian Roché and John Noble, Joel has also brought us some Easter eggs or little signs of Fringe again in Debris series. I enjoyed it immensely.

As more and more people join the already big group of people connected by the alien artifact, Bryan suggests shutting it down to break the connection. It is the only way to save them. Finola asks her father about the recalibration. George says she can touch it; that it will not harm her. Finola’s reluctance is noticeable, but she trusts her father enough to take his word and does touch the alien artifact. It does not harm her but does glow red under her touch. I suspect this was on purpose that George instructed Finola to do that and at the end of the episode is maybe the reason why he asked her to do that.

Debris S1x13 George tells Finola about this Debris object
Debris S1x13 George tells Finola about the characteristics of this specific Debris object. Image courtesy NBC

George tells Finola that in order to release the people from the grips of the alien artifact that their memories will be wiped completely. Finola objects but George insists that she must let it happen in order for him to save their lives and allow them to be released. George says we have no choice, to which Finola replies that we always have a choice.

As they argue back and forth about regarding this specific alien artifact, we hear Finola saying that she can find a way and George insisting that there is no time. George finally tells her that Influx agents are on their way. Finola is visibly shaken at this news and then George delivers the bombshell; he called them!

This is when the episode takes a sharp turn into the meatiest part of the episode. This is where you as the viewer may question and find yourself in a quandary right along with Finola. George confesses to her that he did indeed commit suicide in order for a rebirth to happen, for which he paid the price.

Debris S1x13 Finola thinks George is delusional
Debris S1x13 Finola thinks her father George is delusional. Image courtesy NBC

Finola thinks that George is still delusional because of what happened to him, when in actuality he deceived her from the beginning. “If we cannot help people then we do not deserve this debris” George said to her. He told her that he knew she was coming to rescue him, but that she came too early.

George tells her that the United States has been weaponizing the alien artifacts and so have other countries such as China and Russia. He had mentioned that other governments cannot be trusted to be the guardians of the alien objects, it should be used for good.

What George mentioned about the debris is that specific debris in consort with others “will enable the transformation of the human mind so that humanity can ascend to a higher plane of consciousness and thought”. This last part of the episode is where, for me, “Celestial Body” gets remarkably interesting.

Click to learn about Nikola Tesla
Click to learn about Nikola Tesla

It reminds me of one of my father’s heroes, Nikola Tesla, who was so far beyond his time that it was his downfall. Another genius in his time this reminds me of was Leonardo da Vinci. Both men were far beyond what we consider genius, they were on a level that, dare I say other worldly? Their inventions and discoveries were for the betterment of man but have since been used for weapons and destruction. J. Robert Oppenheimer as well never intended his invention to become the atom bomb, but alas it did.

Both Da Vinci and Tesla were men that were feared by their respective governments so much so that they were almost silenced for their inventions, thoughts, and intellect. They both have often said that they had dreams or visions that were not of this world. That their knowledge or some of their ideas come from outside the realm of consciousness and maybe considered extraterrestrial. That concept those men like them have maybe had the knowledge of the universe and the ages has plagued them for centuries. So much so that both Tesla and da Vinci became recluses during parts of their lives. Tesla wanted to share his inventions with the world for free, but the government prevented him from doing so. The Shakespeare quote from Hamlet “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” Also, it begs the question that there are things in this world that even though we cannot see them they are still there and always have been. That there are entities that can pass through this world, energy, spirits, connections, and that are a part of this realm whether we see them or not is amazing.

Debris S1x13 Finola is captured by Influx

When Otto, Anson and Loeb show up things get tense. Finola is still devastated by her father’s admission to her and cannot figure out why he did this. George mentions to Otto that a telesphere was born yesterday out of a pocket universe inside Orbital and its arrival may have been triggered by the alien artifacts as a whole. Loeb tells Finola that she must be so proud of her father, that he has a vision that only he can see. He knows what we can be, what we should be…humanity. This episode turned everything on its head for sure.

Once the alien object is hooked up to the machine that Otto brought, George asks how long before the people will die? Otto informs him that it will be quick, and George asks if he can ease them off the bottle, instead. Their minds will still be erased, but things can be learned again. This part reminded me of the movie Johnny Mnemonic who is a “mnemonic courier” that transports sensitive data via an implant in his brain, but at the cost of his childhood memories. The irony of that movie is “In 2021, society is driven by a virtual Internet, which has created a degenerate effect called “nerve attenuation syndrome” or NAS. Mega corporations control much of the world, intensifying the class hostility already created by NAS.” Sound familiar? That is exactly what George is trying to prevent by trying to get the alien artifacts away from governments and corporations.

Debris S1x13 Finola is forced to take the blue pill to avoid her memory from being erased
Debris S1x13 Finola is forced to take the blue pill to avoid her memory from being erased. Image courtesy NBC

Finola is then given a blue pill (like The Matrix) to help her from having her mind erased. She vehemently protests taking it but is forced to do so by Anson. As the machine is activated it sends out a wave that disrupts the connection to the Debris causing the transfixed people to fall like dominos. Bryan is also affected by this wave blast; he barely survives but is definitely struggling when he gets to Finola and the other men.

As Bryan approaches, Otto mentions that Bryan must be the “Third Man”, that aside from Garcia and Ming, Bryan was also given the injections that may have just saved his life from the debris. What Otto says next gives the viewer a what the heck moment, Otto says “wonderful job in hiding your identity” which begs the question; who is Bryan Beneventi really? Is he perhaps an entity from another dimension that shape shifted into Bryan?

Was Bryan exposed to alien artifacts way before we get to meet him? What reality are we in and why does Otto extract, by putting his hand close to Bryan’s head, what I assume is information from him. “Wonderful meeting you” Otto finally says as he bids a farewell to Bryan.

Debris S1x13 Bryan survives the mind erasure because of his injections
Debris S1x13 Bryan survives the mind erasure because of his injections. Image courtesy NBC

George insists the alien artifact must stay with him. “There are things you have no knowledge of about the debris. There are things that only I know-you belong with me, your father.” Finola’s answer is a gut punch, but makes perfect sense to her “My father died six months ago; you are not him” as far as she is concerned. George then says a final word to her “This tech will be free” just like what Tesla wanted with his discoveries and tech.

As the episode climaxes, we find out that Bryan about his injury in an alien artifact incident with Garcia (Zak Santiago) and Ming, which he has to admit to Finola that he has been taking the injections since the incident. He has been taking precautions to “stave off something” but did not know what. Now we do!

I think it was preparing him for when the alien artifact was activated in “Celestial Body”. It would certainly explain why Bryan has been having a different experience regarding the debris than Finola. Why his time in the military was secretive, why he kept being in a time loop in the dual Icarus episodes.

Debris S1x13 The Sandman follows Otto Loeb and Anson
Debris S1x13 The Sandman follows Otto Loeb and Anson. Image courtesy NBC

Bryan thinks this is the first time something has happened because of the injections, when it was probably happening all along, he just never put it together. He claims he has never seen Otto before, but that does not mean that Otto is not Ming as a shapeshifter.

Bryan tells Finola that they need to inform Maddox of what just happened, but who knows if Maddox already knows or not?

Otto tells George that “it would have never worked out with the girl in any iteration”, meaning Finola I assume. As the men are driving down the scenic road, an alien “Sandman” appears and George spots it, then they all do.

Once the car passes the entity, the entity turns around and follows the car. But does it continue to do so as it disappears and becomes invisible? That is the last we see of the men, the question being where they are going with the debris and what will happen to Bryan once he recovers?

Debris S1x13 Craig uses the Debris to allow Dario to speak again
.Debris S1x13 Craig uses the Debris to allow Dario to speak again Image by James Dittiger, courtesy NBC

The final scenes are poignant. It made me think that Maddox is a good guy in this last time when we see with him. Craig comes home with the alien communications artifact that he received from Irina, asking Linda (Jennifer-Juniper Angeli) the babysitter where Julia is.

Linda says that she is upstairs napping as she had a headache and Linda stayed to make sure everything was okay. This scene made me nervous because when Maddox calls out to his wife who is in bed, she does not answer him right away. He tries again a few more times until Julia finally wakes up and hugs her husband tightly.

A sigh of relief came over me that Julia did not do what she intended to do. She tells Craig that she almost did something but stopped herself. He does not suspect anything is wrong thankfully but does ask her to come downstairs with him.

Debris S1x13 The communications Debris allows Dario to speak again
Debris S1x13 The communications Debris allows Dario to speak again. Image courtesy NBC

We see that the alien artifact that Maddox received from the Russians is set up and projecting a force field like shield around Dario.

We can see that Julia is confused about what Craig is doing. Then when Dario says “Mom” to Julia, she understands what her husband has been doing, which then makes Julia shed tears of joy.

Clearly at this point the viewer knows that the whole reasoning behind Maddox getting his hands on the debris was to heal his son.

This also makes the viewer wonder what exactly the alien artifacts are going to be used for in the future? Was this kind of thing what George meant by the greater good? The elevated humanity that the alien artifacts sent here to help people with their problems?

Debris S1x13 The blue orb arrives in Sedona Arizona
Debris S1x13 The blue orb arrives in Sedona Arizona. Image courtesy NBC

In the final scene of the series, we are back in Sedona, Arizona where a blue orb has arrived next to the Indigenous man that we saw in a previous episode.

The man says to the blue orb that it must have had a long journey and that his name is Dahkeya (Julian Black Antelope). The blue orb follows Dakheya into a cave where we see another Fringe alum, Sebastian Roché (Brill).

Brill mentions something about the piece of a specific alien artifact in Virginia. and then we see a clone (at least to me) of Finola.

Brill says, “Let’s begin” and that was the end of the episode. With the title of this episode being “Celestial Body”, I have no doubt that is most likely referring to not only the clone or Finola, but maybe others as well, perhaps Bryan or Otto or more people or aliens that we had yet to meet?

Debris S1x13 Brill says lets begin as we see another Finola in a force field
Debris S1x13 Brill says lets begin as we see another Finola in a force field. Image courtesy NBC

Unfortunately, with the cancellation of this series we will never find out what was going to happen with that Finola clone or what other things the alien artifacts can do.

What George Jones may be doing with the objects if the spheres at Orbital would ever be completed?

What would have become of Dario? Would he have been completely cured?

So many questions that we will never know because the series has ended. It pains me to no end that, yet another sci-fi show of great intelligence and story has ended because it was too cerebral for the masses.

That maybe the point of the Debris series, the humanity we have been seeking the last few millennia has slipped through our fingers once again.

I want to personally thank Joel Wyman, Jonathan Tucker, Rianne Steele, Norbert Leo Butz, Jennifer Copping, Scroobius Pip, John Noble, Andrea Stefancikova, and every single person involved in this beautiful show. I am keeping my fingers crossed that another forum would decide to pick up this property and give it the wonderful chance it so richly deserves to keep telling this amazing story of connection and humanity.

Thank you as always Debris fans. Make sure to let NBC know politely that you watched Debris on NBC and watched it on Peacock TV. Doing so may help Save Debris and Renew Debris!

Welcome back Debris Lovers, WormholeRiders, and admirers of the terrifically talented actor Jennifer Copping!

Jennifer Copping - Image courtesy The Promotion People
Jennifer Copping – Image courtesy The Promotion People

On Monday May 24, 2021, Kenn and Lori of TeamWHR were honored to interview Jennifer Copping!

Ms. Copping portrays the fascinating character of Julia Maddox in the hit science fiction series Debris which has just completed it’s season one run in the United States with the tagline. “Three years ago, images were captured of a wrecked alien spacecraft moving through our solar system,” it says. “For the past six months, Debris from that spacecraft has been falling to Earth.”

Jennifer Copping’s long list of acting accomplishments recently include a recurring role on NBC’s superb science fiction series Debris, and a starring or featured roles in science fiction or fantasy series that we have enjoyed over the past years.

Our first fond memories of Ms. Copping were in MGM Studios fabled Stargate SG-1 series, followed by Kingdom Hospital, Continuum, Supernatural, Van Helsing, Travelers and many other outstanding roles that Jennifer has been featured in during her fantastic career in the entertainment industry.

Featured in four episodes of Debris series season one, Jennifer Copping’s Julia Maddox character provides valuable insight into the private life with her husband Craig Maddox (Norbert Leo Butz), a team leader at the CIA who is the titular manager of the Orbital Division assigned to track down alien objects, a collaboration between the CIA and MI6 of the United Kingdom. In “Celestial Body” Julia plays a pivotal role along with Irina (Andrea Stefancikova) and her husband, Bryan (Jonathan Tucker), Finola (Riann Steele) and her son Dario (Christian Rose) that includes a special surprise guest appearance of John Noble from Fringe working with George Jones (Tyrone Benskin), Anson Ash (Scroobius Pip) and Loeb (Ben Cotton) of Influx!

Our detailed analysis about this outstanding A PLUS PLUS episode and the Renew Debris news will be published in the near future, so stand by to have your mind blown, or erased as the case may be!

Julia and Craig Maddox protrayed by Jennifer Copping and Norbert Leo Butz. Image courtesy NBC

The Julia Maddox story arc resumed in the ninth episode, “Do You Know Icarus“, a time travel reality change episode that gave Debris series viewers more indications Julia’s marriage to Craig has been under extreme stress due to a horrible accident that crippled their son as we learned in the fourth episode called “In Universe” is something that eroded the relationship between Julia and Craig Maddox.

This tragic accident ultimately led to an apparent divorce proceeding in the series that we discussed with Ms. Copping in her extended interview featured below for your enjoyment.

What is most interesting is that in episode ten, “I Am Icarus“, which apparently restored reality in the Debris series, appears to have left an unanswered question; whether or not viewers were returned to the same reality or not?

The season one finale “Celestial Body” airing on Monday May 24, 2021 appears to have addressed these questions with direct evidence, but opened up new questions or areas about Julia and Craig that are to be investigated in the second season of the Debris series.

Jennifer Copping was born on June 9, 1979 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in a town named Sechelt located in an area of the lower Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, approximately 50 kilometers northwest of Vancouver, now known affectionately as Hollywood North.

Beginning her acting, singing and dancing career at a a very early age, Jennifer first appeared in a series called “Booker” followed by appearances in “21 Jump Street” and “Neon Rider” in 1990 and 1991.

Jennifer capped her early career with a supporting role in the beloved fantasy mythology series “Highlander” in 1994.

Of great interest to live stage acting theater lovers, Jennifer was hand-picked by Pete Townshend to play the original “Sally Simpson” in the Toronto, Canada musical stage production of The Who’s “Tommy” in 1995.

Jennifer then went on to appear in the reboot of 1960’s cult television classic science fiction show called “The Outer Limits” with appearances in 1998 and 1999.

As mentioned above, Jennifer Copping initially came to our attention in 2000 with her appearance as a character Mallin in an episode called “New Ground” in the third season of the MGM Studios hit series Stargate SG-1 that went on to a successful ten season run ony SYFY.

SG-1 was filmed primarily in Vancouver like many television series and movies. When we next heard of Jennifer, we our team was watching a trailer for a 2011 pilot series named “Captain Starship”  that featured Stargate celebrities. Team WHR had seen the promotional trailer at a San Diego Comic-Con event and at a Creation Entertainment Stargate convention. Jennifer has also appeared twice in the iconic series “Supernatural” in 2007 and 2014.

Our next reunion with Jennifer, prior to Debris series, was in 2014 when she was featured in “Continuum Series“, followed by a three episode story arc as a character named “Quaid” in the hit science fiction fantasy series “Van Helsing” in 2016.

In late 2020, we were extremely pleased to find out that Ms. Copping would be appearing in the Debris series. Lori and I decided to reach out to catch up with this fine actress. We thank Ms. Copping for the Shout Out above and for her time with an extended interview featured below our mutual enjoyment. We learned much more about Julia Maddox this week in the season one finale “Celestial Body”, and like all science fiction admirers, hope the series is renewed for a second, third, fourth, and fifth season as envisioned by Joel J.H. Wyman!

Please make certain to let NBC know that you want more Debris on NBC on-line and tell everyone you know to watch again  on Peacock TV to help Renew Debris. Thank you!

To our sheer delight NBC Entertainment has brought everything the viewers desire in a new science fiction series!

Admirers of Debris series have long sought the science, adventure, mystery, love, and alien artifacts all found in a program that has pleased and dazzled the top entertainment reviewers such as Damian Holbrook, including Team WHR, in a series created by Joel J.H. Wyman and his professional confederates including Tanya Swerling, Jeff Vlaming, Katie O’Hara, Jason Hoffs, Tracy Bellomo, the special effects team working with Rory Cutler and many more!

Casting of Debris by the team of industry experts John Papsidera, Corinne Clark and Jennifer Page ensured that charismatic chemistry between the actors was both genuine and heartfelt.

As  a result the viewing audience became invested in each character from the series leads Jonathan Tucker, Riann Steele, Norbert Leo Butz, Scroobius Pip, Tyrone Benskin, Anjali Jay, Thomas Cadrot, in supporting roles from Michelle Choi-Lee, Jennifer Copping, Andrea Stefancikova, Sebastian Roché, Ben Cotton as well as fine roles by many other actors!

It is hard to believe that the fantastic first season of Debris series has reached a twelfth terrific episode. With the aptly named episode “A Message From Ground Control”, almost all questions from fans will be answered.

Wonderfully written by Joel J.H. Wyman and delightfully directed by the legendary Brad Anderson, well known for his accomplishments in Treadstone, Fringe, Almost Human and Alcatraz, “A Message From Ground Control” will set up the season finale thirteenth episode named “Celestial Body”.

In what we hoped will be a cliff hanger gateway episode to a second, third, fourth, and fifth season as this groundbreaking work of entertainment sweeps the world in 2022 and beyond, Debris series represents such outstanding quality that many believe the series should have already been renewed.

However, as is somewhat a tradition in the entertainment industry for programs “on the bubble”, in our opinion, a Renew Debris announcement is being withheld until one week after the season one finale airs on Monday May 24, 2021 which makes good business sense. What we find amazing here at WormholeRiders News Agency is why this program was even on the bubble to begin with and why Debris series has not yet scored a live viewing audience numbering in the five to seven million range?

In “A Message From Ground Control”, is described by NBC Entertainment  as follows “As George grows closer to finding what he is after, the Debris that Orbital has collected begins a mysterious process”. The description by Team WHR of this episode?

In our opinion, “A Message From Ground Control” is another A PLUS effort from the Debris series creators!

S1x12 The Debris comes to life

The episode opens with a lab technician in a huge Orbital warehouse filled with numbered boxes and specially sealed cases that obviously are loaded with alien objects. He is taking readings on each case or box for some type of inventory control procedure.

Strange noises are heard as one of the sealed case seems to have crawled off the shelf by itself, moving several feet in the process. While returning the case to it’s assigned place, another sealed case mysteriously moves off another shelf a few feet away and continues to journey towards some destination that we are unaware of.

Just when things could not get any scarier, an explosion is heard and a bluish looking alien object crashes through a sealed case from inside it and flies into the lab technician, killing him.

The object is observed impacting with one of the large alien objects that we have witnessed Craig Maddox (Norbert Leo Butz) reconstructing in the Orbital warehouse and then through the wall to the outside.

Another lab technician looking for his associate enters, finds his co-worker dead and sees other alien objects moving in single file towards another pathway near the larger alien objects.

Suddenly, the lights in the entire Orbital warehouse go dark making whatever the aliens are up to things an even spookier incident in the Orbital facility!

We move to George Jones (Tyrone Benskin) who is using a pair of bolt cutters to enter a secret facility in Arco, Virginia within the United States. George says “I come in peace” to no one in particular.

George makes his way into the compound of a moth balled top secret facility featuring a huge radio transmitter array that had been used to transmit news reports to the allied forces and spies during World War II and afterwards.

Debris S1x12 George meets Finola and Bryan at the moth balled facility

George is joined at the facility by his daughter Finola (Riann Steele) and her partner Bryan (Jonathan Tucker) where we learn that George plans to use the facility to boost his signals to figure out what “Influx” is working on; and execute a method to track and identify all the pieces of alien technology currently on Earth, regardless of location.

George warns Bryan and Finola that if “Influx” gets a hold of the piece of Debris that he is looking for, it could end their quest to figure it all out.

George in convinced that he can use the array to tap into satellites that will identify the piece of alien technology that “Influx” was having him build a device for.

Debris S1x12 George discusses Maddox with Finola and Bryan

While Bryan is bringing in boxes of equipment that George needs, Finola wants to know why Maddox tried to kill her father.

George tells Finola that he believes that Maddox is a control freak using his government position for his own and the governments nefarious purposes that were never revealed to him (George).

In this episode we will find out precisely what Maddox has been doing, and why! Bryan returns informing Finola that they have been recalled to Orbital due to an emergency at the warehouse.

Finola and Bryan arrive at Orbital headquarters in Langley Virginia and link up with Agent Tom (Thomas Cadrot) and Craig Maddox who informs them that eight agents are missing and that the entire facility lost power as we observed at the beginning of the episode. Maddox believes that the objects are being “recalled” by “influx” for some nefarious purpose, however he will prove to be incorrect in this regard.

Debris S1x12 Finola and Bryan enter the darkened Orbital facility to investigate

Wearing protective suits, Finola and Bryan with a number of Orbital Agents enter the darkened warehouse and find several of the missing agents who are all looking blankly at a wall in a corridor in some sort of a trance.

Proceeding to the Orbital warehouse alien objects storage area, Bryan finds that the technician that was killed has suffered massive head trauma.

The Orbital team find another group of technicians, also in a trance, who are stacking boxes of alien artifacts in a neat organized row within a walkway between the storage racks of various alien objects stored in numbered boxes.

None of the Orbital technicians respond when questioned by Bryan. It is if as they are being commanded by the aliens to achieve their purpose and are oblivious to any interference by the humans.

The storage cases of numbered Debris begin moving by themselves and then disappear in some sort of a wormhole portal.

Suspected to likely be caused by Anson Ash of “Influx”, who has demonstrated in previous episode that they have the ability to transport objects and human beings, we will learn that is not possible since he remains in prison. What will be revealed is that no human being is involved with this seemingly magical transport process.

Each case that is transported, in each instance, has had the alien object(s) removed and then returns several feet down the pathway, crushed and torn apart.

We have also witnessed Maddox using the same technology using a “pocket dimension” to transport chairs but never any alien objects. It becomes apparent that the specific objects are being collected by the aliens for their specific, yet to be disclosed function.

Finola begins the process of cataloging which alien objects are being taken through the “pocket dimension” portal to attempt to make a logical connection on what makes them desirable to whomever is retrieving them.

Back at the communication array George is observed making progress on his alien object tracking system performing his part in this mysterious series of events.

Debris S1x12 The Orbital team check the Debris to ascertain what is happening

Inside the Orbital facility infirmary, Doctor April Han (Michelle Choi-Lee) is tending to  the technical lab people who are in a trance, but are being called away by whoever or whatever is controlling them. Any attempts to stop the technician’s ends up resulting in each person to begin shaking and convulsing.

Bryan instructs the medical staff to let them go, following them to where they are being sent; a boardroom section of the warehouse with a glass window where they are looking at larger sections of the alien objects that have been reconstructed  by Maddox!

When Finola is unable to identify why each piece is being taken, an Orbital Agent named Lester Chin (Howie Lai) suggest they move the stacked cases away from the “pocket dimension” portal transporter. However, when Chin tries to move a case of Debris, he too is sent into a trance and joins the other technicians staring into the warehouse.

Suddenly, Zimmer (Evan Rein), one of the lab technicians who was affected in the beginning of the episode, begins to convulse violently and falls to the ground dead! Finola states “How long before the same thing happens to the rest of them?”

Meanwhile, George continues his work on the communications array, successfully reactivating the equipment. Finola reaches out to George who is able to deduce that the connection between the alien objects being sent through the “pocket dimension” portal.

George explains that readings Finola is observing are harmonic in nature. George theorizes that exposure to these harmonics at close range are what killed Zimmer and threatens the other Orbital technicians.

George cautioning Finola to be careful, shares a method to block the harmonics by reversing the polarity on the Orbital equipment. George believes that such an attempt may stop the aliens artifacts from passing through the portal that has appeared in the Orbital warehouse.

Calibrating the devices works revealing a clue that leads Finola and Bryan to an underground laboratory facility that turns out to be an antimatter weapons facility that Maddox setup using George’s work!

Finola confronts Maddox who claims that he was only working on the antimatter weapons technology to protect the United States from efforts by China, Russia, the United Kingdom, and “Influx” who are also working on the same technology!

Finola storms out of Maddox’s office stating that her father was nearly killed trying to protect everyone from just such an alien object disaster.

Back in the Orbital warehouse, the lab technicians in a trance are being directed to attack the Orbital devices that are successfully blocking the “pocket dimension” transport portal. When one of them touch the devices, he is instantly vaporized!

Bryan and Finola are able to save all but one of the lab technicians taking them away from the Orbital devices, securing them for safekeeping elsewhere in the Orbital facility. April Han confirms Finola’s suspicions; that the harmonic frequencies are what in effect what likely boiled the brains out of Zimmer.

Bryan is guarding the secured technicians when the power in the Orbital facility begins to come back on. Bryan thinks he is hallucinating when first he sees Asalah (Zarina Sterling) then Marie Caldwell (Erin Karpluk), the women who also appeared to him in “Asalah” is once again in front of him asking him “Why?” extending her hand which Bryan grasps.

It becomes obvious the aliens are controlling the appearance of Marie and Asalah just as in the previous episode. Bryan confesses to Finola that the alien object directed him to allow the “pocket dimension” transport to complete the process or many people will die.

Bryan asks Finola to help the alien objects complete their process. It is apparent that they are doing so on their own volition with the express approval of Craig Maddox.

Once the last alien object is freed from it’s location in the weapons lab by Bryan and Finola, completing the aliens process, a silver ball of light materializes, orients itself and exits the Orbital facility.

The beautiful ball of light hovers above the crowd of Orbital staff gathered outside, pausing briefly, almost as if it is thanking Bryan and Finola for their help before it disappears into the night sky.

    The question to consider?

Is the ball of light an alien artificial intelligence, or the alien life forms themselves?

In the meantime, as the episode winds down to an exciting conclusion, three mind boggling things happen near the end of the episode that reveal exactly where we will all be going in the Debris series season one finale “Celestial Body”.

First, Anson Ash tricks the prison guards into taking him to the hospital because they have detected an alien object inside him. There is little doubt that Anson has ingested the object on purpose in order to activate the alien dimensional transport technology he has used before for his well planned escape. How this alien object was not detected while he was in custody is not known.

Anson uses electro cardio shock paddles which activates the alien artifact inside him and he is transported away from the prison to meet up with Loeb (Ben Cotton)!

Debris S1x12 Irina calls Maddox to inform him the alien object is in Virginia

Second, George is observed talking with Finola. George shares that when the alien object disappeared into the night sky that the remaining lab technicians were freed from the trance. George shares with Finola that he has completed his work at the communications array, telling Finola that the alien object that he has been looking for is in Virginia!

Third, our mysterious Russian agent Irina (Andrea Stefancikova) is witnessed once again talking to Maddox via cell phone. Maddox wants to know “if it is here?”. Irina says yes it is in the State (of Virginia) in a remote location. Irina and Maddox agree to “do it tomorrow”!

    Conclusions:

At this point in the Debris series, can there be any doubt that whatever it is that Irina and Maddox will do next week, it is also what George, Bryan, Finola AND Anson Ash are also seeking?!?

We are certain the answer we seek will in the season one finale “Celestial Body” next week! Make sure to watch Debris on NBC or you can watch the next day on Peacock TV. See you next week for what will be a superb season concluding episode that we hope ensures that Renew Debris becomes manifest!

Andrea’s long list of acting credits recently include a recurring role on NBC’s superb science fiction series Debris, and a starring role in “American Badger”, an action adventure film that is scheduled to premiere in the United States on June 15th, 2021.

Last week, on May 06, 2021, TeamWHR was honored to interview Andrea Stefancikova who is perfectly portraying an enigmatic character named “Irina” in the hit science fiction series Debris as seen on NBC Monday nights in the United States. The mysterious nature of Irina is further enhanced by the opening sequence words that tantalize those who believe that alien life forms have been monitoring planet Earth for millennia and finally arrived!

“Three years ago, images were captured of a wrecked alien spacecraft moving through our solar system,” it says. “For the past six months, Debris from that spacecraft has been falling to Earth.”

According to our sources about the science fiction series, Stefancikova had been filmed in four Debris episodes including the Pilot episode, and is featured in three broadcast episodes including “Supernova” which revealed Irina as a Russian agent of suspect origins.

In Supernova Irina was observed delivering an alien communications artifact to a character named Craig Maddox (Norbert Leo Butz). Maddox is a CIA agent somehow associated with Irina in a past life. Maddox is the head of the “Orbital” division which has been collecting the alien artifacts that have survived their arrival on Earth.

Exactly how Stefancikova’s episode appearance, when the alien artifacts were discovered falling to Earth, and her relationship with Maddox, remains a mystery at this point.

Apparently the creators wisely felt that it would reveal too much regarding her interactions as a Russian agent dealing with the seemingly corrupt Craig Maddox character if revealed too early in the series.

We agree since it has increased the suspense about exactly who Irina is, and how she originally met Craig Maddox and how this relates to the two main Orbital agents, Finola Jones (Riann Steele) and Bryan Beneventi (Jonathan Tucker).

However, according to NBC, Legendary Studios and Frequency Films, and to our sheer delight, Andrea Stefancikova is featured in the two final episodes of the Debris season one run; episode twelve “A Message From Ground Control” airing on May 17, 2021, and the season one finale named “Celestial Body” airing on May 24, 2021.

Each of the next two episodes promise to reveal more about her Russian character and Irina’s involvement with Maddox. We are very excited to see what transpires over the next two weeks and hope that the series will be renewed for several more seasons with additional appearances of Irina!

We include a five minute video shout out from Andrea Stefancikova below and an extended audio interview below for your enjoyment.

Additionally, Team WHR includes Andrea’s answers to our questions in a text format as well that features more details about Andrea not discussed in the audio interview.

    Andrea Stefancikova Interview Additional Q&A:

    1. How have you enjoyed playing the role of Irina on Debris?

I really loved playing this mysterious and intelligent woman. This is my first sci-fy show I have worked on and it’s Joel Wyman’s show! How cool is that!

    2. Irina is a strong and intelligent woman, is that something you look for in a role?

I look for different things in each role, and intelligence and strength are definitely something I search in each role amongst other things

    3. How much of Andrea is in Irina?

A lot! Could you tell from the phone interview?

    4. Where would you like to see Irina go in a season 2 if it is renewed?

Fingers and toes crossed Debris is renewed. My gut tells me it will be. If Irina comes back, it will be a dream come true!! I’d like to know more about how Irina and Maddox met, and what sort of back-story they have. Norbert and I came up with a solid one when we first worked togetherJ Why do they keep dealing with each other and also, what does she want from Maddox and why… She is a character that doesn’t just help of good will, she usually wants something in return, especially when it comes to Maddox. If she doesn’t get it, she will come back for it. It would be interesting to see more of her world, the Eastern/Central European intelligence, and more of its collision with the American world.

    5. Can you tell us anything about your role on Debris without revealing spoilers?

Irina is a strong, intelligent, calculated woman with purpose. She comes across cold, but she is vulnerable and she does have a soft spot for Maddox. She worries about him, but also about herself. Her survival instinct is very strong, and she always puts herself first. I think that’s all I can say at this time.

    6. How were you bitten by the acting bug?

It started off early, when I was a kid. The background of my family is artistic, and I was immersed in entertainment from a young age. I always wanted to be an actor and make my own movies.

    7. Back to Debris, what was it like on set – all serious, or were there fun times?

Of course we had fun, and moments of laughter and jokesJ but when the cameras were rolling, it was mostly serious. I should add that working during the pandemic changes the overall vibe a little. It’s different not to be able to see peoples’ faces, and having to maintain safe distance. Set is normally a very “together” place. But we did it, and we could do it again!

    8. What has been a memorable moment from Debris?

Everything! For me it’s meeting new people that is always so special. From directors, actors, to crew. Getting close to people like Norbert, and working with him on Joel Wyman’s show was a real treat that I am grateful for.

    9. Did you have to learn a specific skill (e.g. Russian accent) for the Irina role on Debris?

Yes, I did an accent for Irina. I chose a Russian accent that is not the stereotypical one that we hear all the time, the comedic over the top one, but more of an educated, global citizen Russian accent, that is more subtle, so we focus on what she says and not how she says it. Someone who works with international people and who is a secret agent would speak like this.

    10. How have your interactions with fans been regarding social media? Mostly good?

Yes! I am very grateful for all the fans. Always.

    11. What is something that your fans might be surprised to learn about you?

Other than what I mentioned in the phone interview, it could be that I am a Kundalini Yoga Teacher. I don’t teach, but I practice. I dance Argentine tango and have done acro yoga. I am an alto in a Gospel chorale. (not active this year) I lived in the Middle East for some time. People never expect it. Or that I visited Libya for instance. Oh, and I am afraid of heights!

    12. Is there an actor or actress that you would love to work with?

If there only was one haha. There are quite a few I would love to work with starting from my industry friends…

    13. What do you enjoy doing when you are not working as an actor?

I love spending time outdoors with my dog, reading, watching movies, exercising. When it comes to other work, I love producing and am quite busy with my projects in development. I have recently produced two music videos, and I also teach acting on and off, depending on my availability.

    14. Beyond Debris, do you have any other projects in the works that you can discuss?

Yes, I have a feature film to be released in the U.S. on June 15th called American Badger. Its companion film American Velvet will be released at the end of the year or spring 2022.

    15. What is next for you Andrea?

I don’t know yet. Many things cooking right now, so fingers crossed!

We are certain to learn more about Irina next week in “A Message From Ground Control” and in the season one final “Celestial Body” the following week! Make sure to watch Debris on NBC or you can watch the next day on Peacock TV to help Renew Debris. See you then!
