  • Day 3: Dan Shea

    2009-Stargate Vancouver - Dan-Shea

Dan Shea is hilarious, but I tell you, the man does not know how to stand still!  Back and forth across the stage, he’s worse than an 8 year old kid on a sugar rush! One person actually asked if he was being treated for ADD! He thought that was pretty funny.

Dan didn’t take many questions, mostly beceause it took him half an hour just to answer one. His answers where so long and rambling that I’m not sure that the transcript I will be writing later is going to make any sense!

We did learn a few interesing facts though. I didn’t know that he has been the stunt coordinator for Pysch, the USA comedy/crime show. He was also in a road tunnel stunt for the Fantastic 4 movie.

  • Day 3: David Nykl

David Nylk is a pure joy! What a nice guy!

    More to come later!!!

  • Day 2: Andee Frizzell

Andee Frizzell played every one of the Wraith queens in Stargate Atlantis except for the last one, in “The Queen”. She has a very interesting take on her multiple characters, and thinks any one of them would have been perfect for advertising for a line of beauty products!

Here are some of the questions that the audience asked:

Do you get recognized even though you act in prosthetics? At her first convention in Oklahoma, Andee said, a man started following her around, obviously nervous about approaching her. Finally he gathered his courage and asked if he could have a picture taken with her. After that he loosened up enough just so say that he watches her show all the time, and loves her role on Battlestar Galactica! Oops!

Which Wraith queen is your favorite?Andee was particularly fond of the queen from “Allies”. Why? Because she loved that beautiful traveling robe she got to wear! The shoes were to die for also, though she was forced to take them off after that prolonged walking shot in which they were featured. She also enjoyed playing up on the primal instincts of the queen from Submersion as she menaced Teyla and discovered Teyla’s pregnancy.

When asked why she didn’t get to play the last Wraith queen, Andee has a theory. She stood up, showing all six feet of her height, and then exageratedly demonstrated how tall actress Rachel Luttrell is in comparison. A short Wraith queen isn’t nearly as intimidating, and Teyla would have looked much too short, so they found another shorter actress to play the rival queen.

I have lots more from Andee, enough to write a transcript of much of her appreance. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for more detailed coverage!

  • Day 2: Gary Jones

    2009-Vancouver-GaryJones-01

Gary let some big news slip this afternoon from TPTB, please don’t punish him too hard! We love him!). He said he was allowed to say he would be on Stargate Universe, possibly the episode currently titled “Air”, but beyond that he was not supposed to say a word. He admitted this after he said that he worked with Richard Dean Anderson to film the episode, and Jack has apparently been promoted once again to become a 3 star general! Go Jack!!!

Gary also said he will be in a TV movie called “Held Hostage”, but he did not mention what channel that will be or when it will air.

Gary entertained us with stories and impersonations. He was specifically asked to rehash the story of how director Peter DeLuise insisted that Gary do his lines as Captain Kirk for his first scene in the control room with Beau Bridges. No one minded, most of us hadn’t heard it before!

I took enough notes to write a full transcript for Gary’s appearance, but under the busy circumstances I will be unable to transpose them until the weeks after the convention. Believe me, it will be well worth the wait!

  • Day 2: Working Actors of Vancouver Panel

This was the first time I have ever seen Creation have an almost ComicCon style panel, and it was very interesting!

    The guests were:

    Fluvio Cecere

    Heather Doerkson

    Kirby Morrow

    Michael Kopsa

    Jody Racicot

    and Patrick Currie

Each pratically admitted to looking themselves up online in preperation for the panel so they could give a full account of their work, so I have linked each of their names to their IMDB profiles!

I took copious and confusing notes which I promise to transcribe and post at a later date, but I have to post this one quote right now, just because.

When asked by an aspiring actress trying to get work whether it helps to be choosy about the type of things you audition for, Patrick Currie immediately answered, “Think long and hard because the internet does not go away.” Hmmm, I wonder what that’s supposed to mean . . . : P

It was sad that we couldn’t have more time with each of these actors. You could just tell that some of them had some great stories to share, particularly Jody, Patrick, and Kirby. Hopefully they will attend more conventions in the future and be given an hour all to themselves!

  • Day 2: Design Genius

The first event today was a visit from Valerie Halverson, assistant costume designer for season 9 of Stargate SG-1, and costume designer for season 10 of SG-1, and season’s 4 and 5 of Stargate Atlantis. Valeria was a new comer to the convention setting, but she did very well! She took questions, and also gave us a photo show-and-tell break down of the costumes that were being sent over from Bridge Studios for the Prop Museum.

Here are a few of the interesting questions Valeria took.

Do the actors have any say about their costumes?
Valerie said that she tries to let the actors be comfortable since they have to be in them for so many hours per day. Most of the actors are game for anything because the costumes are so neat in science fiction! No kidding, Valeria!

Were you responsible for the uniform change in Stargate Atlantis at the start of season 4?
Valeria answered that as a costume designer she wanted to put her own touch on the show when she took over. She talked the producers into the new “sexy” outfits and leather uniforms instead of the producers talking her into it, which is apparently how it usually works! She’s interested in styles from the 1940’s and 50’s, along with the dominatrix look.

Which cast member is the hardest to fit? The answer was prompt: Jason Momoa! He’s so tall!

Where do you find your materials? Jo-anne Fabrics? Valeria had never heard of Jo-annes, but is now determined to find one! She said it takes years to learn where to look, and sometimes you just find things by chance, even in unlikely places. “We try anything.”

Do you ever buy whole pieces? Sometimes, because of time constraints, they do, even though it would be ideal to be able to create each costume from scratch. Often they will buy something and then re-work it. For example, this costume at the right, worn by the invaders in Atlantis’s “Daedalus Variations” is partially a hockey uniform with a serious paint treatment!

Do you ever let the actors wear their own clothes? No, because it becomes too complicated. Jason is always trying to do it. He was once told that he could buy something to wear, but if he did he had to buy two of it so that if something happens to one, continuity isn’t ruined by it suddenly being gone. Jason then bought 2 shark’s teeth necklaces and wore them both at once! After that, all personal items were completely banned. No favorite jeans allowed!

Now for a few interesting facts that Valeria shared!

Rachel Luttrell’s Wraith Queen costume had to be able to handle the very physical moves that Teyla does in “Queen”. In order to allow for this, Valeria used a woman’s riding skirt as the bottom of the dress.

Valeria is “working on a secret project” in wardrobe that will prevent Saturday’s tour to Bridge Studios from being able to visit the costume department!

She also commented that one of Ronan’s outfits is called “The Cow” because it used to much leather.

Stay Tuned! There’s lots more to come!

  • Day 2: Atmosphere Is Everything

The Auditorium: the place where nearly everything takes place. Auctions, trivia contests, video screenings, and most importantly guest appearances!

These first six rows of seats are for the highest seat package holders. They get the best seats and have the most events included in their tickets. I’m in row 5!

Farther back are the Preffered Weekend and General Admissions seats.

I was surprised by how small the hall is compared to the accommodations at the annual Chicago Creation convention, which I have attended 5 years in a row. The room may be wider, but it has considerably less depth.

The lobby area is also of considerably smaller size than Chicago. There is very little room for many vendors to set up. The picture below at the left includes the photo table, and the clothes vendor. At the bottom right is the registration table.

One of the adjacent rooms has been set up for the Prop Museum. Pictures from there are soon to come!

I did not learn until very late this evening that they actually set up more vendors on the floor below. Tomorrow I will have to go and check them out.

    More to come! Stay tuned!

  • Stargate Vancouver Day 1: Locations Tour

    The Convention begins at last!

Day 1 began at 8:45 with the boarding of the Locations Tour bus. It was a rainy, drizzly, snowy morning that lasted throughout the day.

The bus was high quality, very comfortable, and complete with cup holders, and television screens. The TV’s were very useful to watch Stargate, what else!

Our tour guide and Stargate SG-1’s location
manager for seasons 2 through 7, Lynn Smith, wife of Executive Producer N. John Smith, put on portions of Stargate SG-1 episodes that corresponded with the location we were on our way to see. We had to travel a good while to reach each location, but for the most part the time went quickly, between the episodes and Lynn graciously taking our questions.

Our first location was the Pitt Meadows Regonal Airport. This is where the airstrip used in the first scenes of Stargate SG-1’s “Tangent” is located. We were able to get off the bus and take some pictures, but we were unable to see the airstrip, and little else of the airport was shown in the episode.

Our next stop was far more interesting. We headed for Bordertown, which according to what Lynn told us and my own research, was built for a show by the same name in 1935, and has remained up ever since. Subsequent shows have come through, using the set in various ways, moving some elements like fences and the windmill, and redressing it. More recently the set has fallen into disuse, and is quite literally falling apart. This did not diminish my awe at being there, however. This area was used in Stargate SG-1 episodes “Beast of Burden” and “A Hundred Days”. No doubt you will recognize this barn as the one in which Jack and Daniel were locked up by Burock in “Beast of Burden”. The best part, with out a doubt, was the fact that those scenes were really filmed inside this very barn, not on a set! I took the opportunity to walk inside the barn, which aside from damage taken over time and the lack of the bars, looked very much as it did in the scenes.

Next, we went to the Jackson Pit and the Municipal Pit.
The Jackson Pit (aptly named if I do say so myself!) was used as the crater in “A Hundred Days” where the meteor buried the Stargate and stranded Jack. Also, it was the setting if the death camp in “Orpheus”, including the ridges from which SG-1 looks down into the camp. Jackson Pit has not changed, though there was some equipment sitting there and it was fenced in so we couldn’t actually walk around the “crater”.

Municipal Pit, however, has essentially been lost as a future location, at least in the roll of a planet other than Earth. It was the location for the ruins and battle scene seen in “Lost City Part 1”. It has been fully developed into housing.

Next, we trekked out to Minacota Lodge (the spelling of which I’m sure I have wrong because Google can’t find it – I’ll try to get the correct spelling). It was the location of Seth’s fortress in “Seth”, minus the escape tunnel – that was built on set. Otherwise all scenes of that episode are on location. The scene where Seth’s worshippers are exiting the tunnel was filmed in Stokes Pit, a location we did not get to visit. Happily for the happy couple but unfortunately for us on the bus, the Lodge was booked for a wedding reception, and we were not allowed to get any closer than the closest perpendicular road. Many of us hopped off the bus to find the best shot through the trees.

After that we headed for Gilly’s Pit, one of the few red rock quarries to be found. This particular quarry was used in both “New Ground” and “The Fifth Man”. Sadly, it like Municipal Pit, is being changed. The red rock is being removed to be sold for tiles and flagstones. I zoomed in on what little I could locate.

At this point we where given a choice. We could go to the GVRD, a forest preserve type area where SG-1 filmed every third episode, according to Lynn, or we could go see the Riverveiw Hospital, which I suspect was a location for “Changeling” but Lynn didn’t say, and the Firehall from “Changeling”. Though these sounded wonderful, we voted to go to the GVRD. The public is given limited access to this area. You can walk, hike, bike or run in it, but you can’t drive through it without express permission – something that Lynn had! We saw Midvalley, an area where Stargate Sg-1 episodes such as ‘Enemy Mine” where filmed (below), and also a point 2km along the road where episodes such as Alliance took place (right). In truth, Lynn listed off almost all of the episodes that was filmed at the GVRD, but I couldn’t possibly keep up. She said she would be posting the list of places we visited, along with the two group pictures we took, on the Creation website.

Lynn gave us the addresses of the hospital and the firehall, and if I can fine the opportunity before having to leave Vancouver, I will go look for them!

On the way back to the hotel, Lynn pointed out several more locations that were very close to Bridge Studios. She pointed out the senior home that was used as a high school for the final scene of “Fragile Balance”. Unfortunately my camera decided to throw a tantrum as we drove by, so I will go back later to get that picture, since I know where it is.

This abandoned Audi dealership became the liqueur store that young Jack tried to get beer from in “Fragile Balance”.

This BWM (right) used to be a old “Zepher” building , according to Lynn, and as such was abandoned and run down. It was then used for Stargate SG-1 episodes such as “Smoke and Mirrors” as the building from where the fake Jack shot Senator Kinsey, who unfortunately for SG-1, did not die as a result.

The motel (below) served as the location for Felger’s apartment in “Avenger 2.0”.

Lastly, this Orthodox church is where the ballroom party in “Chimera” was shot. Lynn let us in on an interesting fact. The party that Sam and Pete crashed was actually the 60th anniversary party for her in laws, John Smith’s parents! Who knew!?

That ends the location tour! I promise to transpose my notes of Lynn’s answers to some of our questions after the convention is concluded. Right now I need to turn in for the night. Tomorrow is a big day, featuring costume designer Valerie Halverson, the “Working Actors of Vancouver Panel”, and appearances from Gary Jones as well as an unannounced guest. Christopher Heyerdahl (Todd the Wraith from Atlantis, as well as couple other roles on SG-1 and Atlantis) was going to be joining us, but then suddenly had to cancel. Tomorrow will also bring Gary Jones’s parody performance entitled “Starhole SG-1.5”. I am concerned for my sanity.

  • Here At Last!

    [audio:http://wormholeriders.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/06-big-jumps.m4p]

The last day on the road, and there was never a dull moment.

This morning was ugly, cold, and raining as we left Coeur d’Alene Idaho. I spent time wiping down our car – which was filthy from driving through muddy snow – and redoing some of the writing on the windows. We couldn’t very well drive into Vancouver with such a mess all over our car, now could we?

We caught a quick glimpse of Seattle from afar as we made our way through Washington, but it was veiled in a mist. We hit some nasty weather as we passed through the northern part of the Cascade mountain range, but it cleared to absolutly beautiful blue skies. There was far more snow here than we had seen elsewhere, but it only made the mountains all the more amazing to see.

We crossed the boarder into Canada at last, just as we finished up Claudia Black’s reading of Shell game. I was a little sad that I didn’t earn my first stamp in my passport book, since Canada has an open boarder policy in regards to the US. I’m so very excited to be here, though! Even as we checked into the Hilton I saw fellow fans in the lobby. How do I know? They were chatting animatedly with each other, and wearing Stargate shirts and jewelry!

You must forgive me for giving a shorter report for today. There’s so much to do to prepare for tomorrow, and I must be up early. Tomorrow is my Locations Tour, and it begins at 9:00 am, Pacific. I have to be downstairs in the hotel lobby by 8:45, with camera fully charged and with every camera card I own in hand!
