  • Sweet Sorrow

I have determined that there is nothing sadder than having to leave a convention knowing full well that your chances of coming back the next year are pretty much nil. I cried this morning. I didn’t want to leave. I love the people, the atmosphere, and knowing that I’m surrounded by people who understand the obsession! Everyone is just as nuts as I am, and that’s comforting. Of course I’m sure that someone living in a sanitarium could feel the same way . . . but I digress!

Everything ended so quickly yesterday! I came out of the auditorium after Amanda Tapping’s Q&A and had half a thought to look at the merchandise tables one more time – even though I’m completely broke now – only to find boxes already packed and set to ship out! I went down a floor to pick up my one and only photo op – which I will reveal later – and had to wait for two hours in line. I didn’t mind. I got to meet some very nice people, hand out a few business cards, and reminisce. We talked about everything, from the Cabaret, to Dan Shea’s inability to stand still, to how we got hooked. By the time I got my image file I was really sad to be leaving.

I wanted at least one more day to try and track down some locations that I knew about and had addresses for – the church from “Red Sky”, the hospital from “Changeling”, and the Richmond sand dunes, which was the location for every desert planet – particularly Abydos – that SG-1 and Atlantis ever visited. I did succeed in finding the fire-hall from “Changeling” and Fraiser University where “Pretense” and “Between Two Fires” was shot. That’s right, it was the Tollan’s planet! I’ll post those pictures soon. Sadly the other two addresses turned out to be incorrect, and my GPS couldn’t find any dunes in Richmond, no matter what I did!

    *Sigh*

All I can do now is begin the countdown for the Chicago convention. Only 5 months and a couple weeks to go!

Right now I have to hit the hay, though. As we move back East we loose a couple hours, so I need my sleep. Tonight we’re back in Coeur d’Alene Idaho, and tomorrow we’ll aim for Billings Montana. Yes, I’m a dork. I think of Martin Loyd when I think of Billings. I told you I’m a nut!

More to come in the days ahead, I promise! And thanks to everyone who has visited commented on this blog! Stick around, I’m just warming up!

  • Day 5: Amanda Tapping

Isn’t she Beautiful?! I took an instant and complete liking to Amanda. As she signed my coveted poster – which has signatures from Michael Shanks, Christopher Judge, and the late and great Don Davis, all of whom are pictured on it along with Amanda and RDA – I told her that I’ve been waiting 5 years to get her signature on it and she laughed, “Get out!” Even though she wasn’t supposed to personalize, she read my name from Michael and Chris’s autographs and personalized her’s as well, just as I hoped she would. After that she smiled at me and shook my hand. She’s every bit as much of an amazing person as I always imagined, and more.

Fortunately for you, I took extensive notes. Unfortunately for all of us, I have a lot of work ahead of me before I’ll have it ready to post.

In the mean time my entire collection of pictures – minus the set tours which we are not allowed to post publicly – is available for browsing in my Photobucket!

  • Day 5: Michael Shanks

Every one’s favorite archaeologist arrived Saturday night, signed autographs, and then had his Q&A today.

I was so very happy to see Michael looking bright and chipper! Both he and Amanda Tapping rescheduled their autograph sessions for last night so that they could leave earlier today to get ready for work early on Monday morning. Michael looked so tired. Remember “Chimera”? Remember how tired Daniel looked in that wonderful scene in the commissary with Sam and Teal’c, and how poor Daniel could hardly keep his head up? That is how tired Michael looked. When it was my turn to get his autograph and he saw me I said, “Hello again!” He replied, “Hi! Haven’t seen you for a while! Where’ve you been?” Despite my nerves and the fact that he was starring right at me, I managed to say, “Actually this is my first time in Vancouver, but I’ve been at Chicago 5 times and seen you!” The poor man muttered something about how tired he was, and then Amanda’s assistant told me to move over to her. I was holding up the line . . . 0: )

Fortunately for you, I took extensive notes of Michael’s Q&A. Unfortunately for all of us, I have a lot of work ahead of me before I’ll have it ready to post.

In the mean time my entire collection of pictures – minus the set tours which we are not allowed to post publicly – is available for browsing in my Photobucket!

  • Day 5: The Master Minds

    2009-Vancouver-GrandWright-RobertCopper-001

Here’s the big news about Stargate Universe from Brad Wright and Robert Cooper!

Currently, Stargate Universe is in it’s 5th week of shooting. There will be a healthy use of humour just like in the other two shows, and there will also be back references to the other series and CROSSOVERS! That’s right! SGU is NOT going to be cut off from Earth and Atlantis the way Atlantis was separated from the SGC for it’s first season! That means the potential for guest stars from SG-1 and Atlantis has increased! Further more, when Michael Shanks was asked about it later, he said he wasn’t allowed to talk about it. Therefore, there is a very good chance that Daniel Jackson will appear on Stargate Universe!!!

The series will reveal further history of the Ancients, and other alien races will be discovered. Robert suggested that these aliens will not all be humanoid, and will not all speak English! When asked about whether we may still have a chance to meet the Furlings for real, they didn’t rule it out!

Robert wasn’t positive, but he seemed to think that Space, the Canadian science fiction channel, will be airing Universe simultaneously with Sci-Fi, instead of being as much as a year behind the airing schedule in the US.

When asked if the Stargate for Universe would be different just as the Atlantis gate is different from the SG-1 gate, Roberts said that he didn’t want to give it away, but “I think this is the coolest gate ever.” He also said that when we first see the gate, it will lock a chevron that we have never seen before.

Stargate Universe will be filmed documentary style because Brad and Robert wanted to see the camera go to more unusual places and see things fro a different perspective.

Brad and Robert’s parting words were “Please give Stargate Universe a chance!”

  • Day 5: N. John Smith

    2009-Vancouver-NJohnSmith-01

    N. John Smith was extremely gracious, even to the point of doing free autographs! I got his signature in the autograph section of my 10 Years of Stargate SG-1 book!

Poor man, we kept putting him in the hot seat, asking him about the SG-1 and Atlantis movies, Stargate Universe, and he kept having to say, “Ask Brad and Robert”!

He told us that Sanctuary is currently actively shooting but he is not doing much on it on this time. However, he was an extra in a scene in an upcoming episode. It was filmed outside in the cold, he complained that it took 20 takes. Also, he thinks that the Sanctuary sets might be available to tour at the next Vancouver Convention!

Here are some of the questions that John took:

Was there any pressure to make Stargate like other shows like CSI? John joked that he seriously never watched a full hour of a television show. They (himself, Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, I think he meant) would watch a little to “check out the competition” but they never intentionally emulated anything all the way through. “Our writers have their own things they want to do.” Creatively, he said that Brad and Robert make all the final decisions.

More to come very shortly! Stick around!

  • Day 4: Robert Picardo

    2009-Vancouver-RobertPiccardo-01

Mr. Woolsey never seems like he has that much of a sense of humur, but Robert has a great one!

    More to come later!

  • Day 4: Paul McGillion

    2009-Vancouver-PaulMcGillion-01
Paul is a really sweet guy, just as sweet as his character, Carson Beckett!

    More to come soon!

  • Day 3: Cabaret and Cocktails

You never know what you’re going to see at The Cabaret. It could truly be anything. Sometimes the actors will read poetry, or perform something that they have done for other projects. Others sing and dance, and still others pull volunteers from the audience and direct sketches. Last night was no exeption.

The Cabaret featured Dan Shea, Robert Picardo, David Nykl, and Conner Trinneer. Dan acted as the “comic relief” – though everything was so comical that it was no relief at all! – coming in in between the other acts, telling stories and jokes. I saw Dan in a Cabaret and the Chicago Convention a couple of years ago, and unfortunately he told most of the same stories – Chris Judge’s method of cutting the cheese, RDA’s revenge for Dan’s phone ringing on set, and Dan’s trepidation at having to ratchet Ben Browder for the slam against the wall in Stargate SG-1’s  “Prototype”. Dan also likes to suddenly take off his shirt and do push ups. He’s very proud of his “pipes”!

Robert Picardo was brilliant. I could tell that everyone was very excited by him being here at what he thinks may be is first Stargate specific convention. Fans of StarTrek Voyager are well aware that Robert is not a bad singer, and sing he did! He took 3 classic pieces, one of which he sang in original form, but the other two he changed to words. “Will you still love me tomorrow?” became “Will you love StarTrek/Stargate tomorrow?” It was hilarious! He also shared with us three short videos of things he has done with an Acme comedy group, who’s work you can find on line.

Yes, he’s wearing a piece on the left, and that’s him seated on the right, holding a baby toy, in a skit with the Acme Theater Group called, “Will you sign this?”. It’s about an actor at a convention who will do anything his fans ask of him . . . and I mean anything!

Connor Trinneer and Robert performed together, reading a two actor story in the way that a radio performance would be given, acting mostly by the way in which they spoke. It was very interesting and very well done! The story was about a writer giving a pitch to a movie producer, who then proceeds to tear it apart and rewrite in in the most ridiculous ways! Connor was the naive writer, while Richard was the producer.

I’ve saved David Nykl for last because I was unfortunate enough to become a part of his performance. Yes, David took volunteers, but I didn’t intend to be one of them! He asked, “who here writes fan fiction?” I raised my hand. Next thing I knew, David was pointing at me! I went, “Oh crud” and started making my way to the stage.

I will never raise my hand for anything while in sight of David Nykl ever again. He puts me and a young man about my age in chairs on the stage in either side of him, and then proceeds to tell us that this is his revenge on fan fiction writers! So what does he do? He pulls out one of those romance novels – the paperback kind that you can find at a grocery store – claimes that the author’s name is really a pseudonym of his, and tells us that as he reads a passage out loud, we have to act it out!

If looks could kill, David would be dead right now. I was mortified. I kept cracking up, it was about all I could do! I can’t act, and the whole situation brought back bad memories of being forced to perform in my grade school’s Christmas play. At least the audience was having fun! They kept cracking up as I kept pulling faces and doubling over, embarrassed to death. The guy I was partnered with said, “It’s better if you just go with it” – he was doing a great job! – but I said, “I know but I can’t!” David was enjoying his revenge. I caught his eye as I glared at him once and he just winked at me, the rotter! I don’t even write for Stargate Atlantis! But guess what? Now I’m determined to write a Zelenka story, and Zelenka is not going to be having much fun! Watch and see if I don’t manage to give David a copy some day!

Worse still, when Connor came out, he couldn’t help but comment on how the whole thing looked from back stage. He could see shadows through the screen on the back of the stage because of the stage lights they rigged up. To him, he said it looked like something really nasty from the ’80’s, and all he could do was stare up at it and munch on his potato chips. Thanks Connor, for compounding my unwanted fame.

I’m sure there will be lots of pictures of me all over the place in the coming week. All I can do is pray that illegal videos of it don’t end up on YouTube. Please, fellow convention attendees, I beg you. Don’t put me on YouTube!

  • Day 3: Teryl Rothery

    2009-Vancouver-TerylRothery-01

Teryl Rothery is just this wonderfully bubbly person. This is my third time seeing her and she’s always joking, always chipper.  She has a habit of running down to the sides of the stage and hugging the people who come up to ask questions, and always allows someone to take a picture of it! Sometimes she invites people up on the stage and has a chat with them! Her questions to guys always follow the same pattern: “Are you married?” Then either, “How old are you?” or “Where’s the wife?” She’s been known to get hubbies into trouble with their wives, so now she always checks first!

More to come! Shortly I have to go back downstairs to get my autographs from Teryl and Connor Trinneer!

  • Day 3: Connor Trinneer

Connor was a little worried at first because as he said, “My standered StarTrek answeres won’t work here!”

Connor has a TV movie coming up on Sci-Fi channel at the end of April. He said he’s watched some of those Sci-Fi originals, and as they go this one was pretty good. It’s called “Termination Shock”.

When asked who was his favorite person to work with on Atlantis he complained that he didn’t get to work with most of the cast. He had the most time with Paul McGillion, Rachel Luttrell, and Joe Flanigan. He did mention in particular that he didn’t really get to work with Jason Mamoa, Jason just got to beat him up!

Lots more to come later on! At the moment we are watching “Pegasus Project” but shortly Teryl Rothery will be putting in her appearance.
