  • Sanctuary “Vigilante”: The Quest for Hollow Earth

    Hello Sanctuarians!

We all saw the controversial move Tesla pulled on Magnus at the end of ‘For King and Country’ and without a doubt, I know I wasn’t the only one waiting desperately to see how that, and all the other story arcs that have been woven, would  carry through to the next episode. So here it is, the penultimate episode of 2010: Vigilante.

It starts with a wonderfully intriguing “discussion” between Magnus and Will, with Magnus trying to play the logical side, as always, but still obviously in turmoil over suddenly losing her control of the Sanctuary…again. Then Will, despite suddenly having heaps of power handed to him on a silver platter, seems to take it in his stride, with his “You’re dying, Magnus. He’s played his trump card already.” And with that fact laid bare, Will plays his own trump card too.

    Sanctuary Season 3 Banner

The interaction between Magnus and Will at the start is really quite intriguing to watch: the change in power causing them both to re-evaluate themselves which ultimately changes the dynamic of their relationship too. In Will’s case, his strength starts to shine despite Adam continuing his frequent taunts and mystery.Sanctuary "Vigilante" - Will & Magnus decision over letting Adam see Hollow Earth

However, I found it interesting how Will’s look back at Magnus could be interpreted. Was it just concern over the events to come? Or was he deferring to her? Through habit, or through respect? Definitely a simple, yet intriguing set-up.

Also, the contrast between Will’s determination and protection of the team compared to Adam’s ‘Jekyll and Hyde’, almost flippant attitude definitely makes their interactions something to behold.

As we head back to the virtual city in the library, it must be said, Anthem just keep churning out such wonderful graphics and it’s been said before, but it deserves repeating, between Anthem and the whole cast, if you didn’t know it was majority green-screen then you’d probably believe the sets are real. Just amazing.

Right before the credits, we are left with the mystery of the keystone. Adam’s found it for them, but what do they do with it? What does it actually do?

Sanctuary "Vigilante" - Adam Worth finds keystone in virtual city

After the credits, Magnus works her magic and the location of the keystone is found – Khövsgöl Province, Mongolia. At this point, the gauntlet of the power struggle is taken up again, with Magnus claiming back the reins. Standing her ground with Tesla, Druitt and Will, she carries on giving out orders as though Tesla hadn’t usurped her position earlier on. Although Tesla, with his flippant comment of “Bring me back some Mongolian wine…actually on second thoughts, don’t.” manages to turn the whole feeling of the scene.

This is where the writing for Sanctuary is brilliant, and props to Alan McCullough for this episode; the seemingly flawless cross between the serious and the amusing. Take, for example, Will’s concern for Magnus followed by the light-heartedness of “Running this place, it’s a piece of cake.” Brilliant, and set up so wonderfully for the irony to follow.

The irony, that is, of Will finding out exactly what Magnus’ day-to-day job entails. Followed by Biggie’s priceless comment on how Magnus actually gets all the work done – [She] “stayed off twitter.” I’m sure we’ll all agree that it’s wonderful that the writers reference fandom and realise how important fandom is to their show.

Sanctuary "Vigilante" - Will & Biggie running the Sanctuary without Twitter!

On their little trip to the Khövsgöl Province, we see how the relationship between Magnus and Druitt has progressed. It’s become a little less tense, and more reminiscent of what we saw of their previous relationship in London. Plus Helen landing on top of him, bonus!

At this point, they’re in exactly the right place to find the keystone. Or are they? They keystone turns out to missing, and there’s evidence of someone having been there before them. Once again, the mystery is hiked up another notch as there seems to be no indicator of who was there and where they’ve taken the keystone.

A cut away to Henry and Kate allows the mystery to simmer for a while, frustrating but very effective as it makes the next switch back to Magnus and Druitt all the more exciting. However, back to the ‘kids’ and their bickering over the trivial things in life…there’s never a dull moment! Yet there’s always a twist, and this time it’s a missing shipment and the sudden appearance of an FBI Agent.

It turns out that Will is supposed to know Agent Abby Corrigan, and bless him; he does try hard to pretend he remembers and listen to her spiel. Tesla, on the other hand, pulls another class trick of undoing her shirt button. Hey, those new effects of the source blood do come in handy!

Sanctuary "Vigilante" - Tesla opening Corrigan's shirt with source blood powers

However, right from the start, something seems a little hinky about her turning up at the Sanctuary, knowing Will was there, knowing certain cases…hmm…

Sanctuary "Vigilante" - Magnus & Druitt sitting on a rock in MongoliaBack to Helen and John, and Druitt’s concern emerges despite Magnus’ best efforts to keep to the point. It has to be said at this point as well, that Chris Heyerdahl keeps outdoing himself week on week with his acting. Biggie and Druitt are such contrasting characters and yet he plays both so beautifully and gives the audience such a perfect character to watch and enjoy. He’s truly a class act. Watching Chris and Amanda [Tapping] act off one another is just out of this world, they really do bring out the best in each other’s skills, to the point where “John, take me to London.”/“It’s been a long time since I’ve heard you say that.” became one of the most touching moments of the entire series, for me.

Back to the Sanctuary, and things seem to have gotten stranger since the FBI Agent appeared. Top secret material being given to the team really shows the differences between the characters but it also shows the ways in which they really work well as a team. Their reactions differ, for example, Will’s surprise compared to Kate’s cynical response, but at the end of the day, their goal is the same.

On a side note, I like that when Will looks in the Sanctuary database, the Harper Mites come up as “Not available at Sanctuary”…as though he’s online shopping. The smallest things are often the most amusing! However, it gives us insight into previous episodes, this time “Trail of Blood”, and it’s amazing how the continuation of these story arcs is woven seamlessly into the scripts so we’re being fed new information without even realising it sometimes!

As we arrive in London, we find Helen and John with a stereotypical museum curator one minute, the next they acquire the key for the keystone and the next they’ve disappeared into thin air again. A very quick scene in the grand scheme of things, but despite that, this scene still hikes up the interest what kind of relationship Magnus and Druitt have at this stage, a couple of looks could say otherwise to what we hear from the characters themselves. Yet another intriguing concept, and something else I hope will be confronted with something more explicit than the scenes we’ve had so far this series.

Sanctuary "Vigilante" - Magnus & Druitt with the curator at the British Library

Back to the missing crate saga, and the interaction between Will and Henry is both completely serious and mature yet at the same time, it also just says ‘little boys’…especiall y Henry’s “It’s a really good idea.” It’s great to see that the relationship between these two is pretty much back to where it was before the Kali saga. A little bit of Will and Henry banter can always lighten the day!Sanctuary "Vigilante" - Will & Henry with Ziggy on the Sanctuary roof

As it turns out, the grand idea is “Ziggy”…a bird that will hopefully recover their missing crat e…or maybe land on a Tropicana truck instead. Either way, it seems they have no other option.

In the meantime, Magnus and Druitt have found their way back to the Sanctuary, and Tesla, and it’s time to put that keystone to the test….and watch it fail. Turns out it isn’t the right piece to complete the keystone after all. And to that the ‘uh-oh’ of Will calling the suspect FBI Agent back and it looks like a set-up for disaster.

And disaster can only mean one thing: Helen Magnus goes on the rampage. This time, it’s to Adam and she descends on him with no mercy. As it comes to light that the keystone piece they’d recovered is a fake, it’s startling to see the change in emotions across Magnus’ face. As a viewer, this revelation has the same effect of putting a dampener on the hope that Magnus could still survive…

Sanctuary "Vigilante" - Magnus in infirmary (with Adam)

The quick interchanges between the different storylines in this episode definitely keep you on your feet, so back we go to Ziggy and hopefully, his recovery. It’s no surprise to find out that he has; the original truck driver is found dead in a warehouse. Although the discovery of his body also leads to the discovery of a lone Sypher beetle that turns out to be aggressive…apparently not a normal trait.

With that news, it’s time to find out what Corrigan and Will have come up with…and it has to be said, Will needs a few lessons in lying. Corrigan seems to be able to see right through him, and the fact that she points out that Will doesn’t remember her, adds another layer to the hinky feeling. It makes it seem like she’s asking for him to call her on something…Then she plays her trump card, the comparison between them and the emotional pull that comes with. Will doesn’t look like he stands a chance of resisting!

Sanctuary "Vigilante" - Will & Abby Corrigan talking

The next chapter of “Vigilante” gives us more of an insight into how ruthless Magnus and Druitt can be. Dangling a curator off Big Ben is just the start of things to come for the whole team. Kate faces the brunt of things when Henry suddenly turns abnormal and attacks. This second event is so unexpected as we’ve watched Henry and Kate grow and their relationship strengthen to the point where it’s almost impossible to believe that he would turn on her, without good reason. Luckily, Will arrives to save the day, however Agam Darshi’s acting must be noted at this point. Her fear reaches you as you watch and you feel as confused and scared as Kate does. Brilliant acting.

And after the heights of shock and tension, comes the cheer of Tesla’s wit. If only “Shoot your employee day” was actually a recognised holiday… However, it does bring about a nice little bit of praise from Tesla for Will. Unexpected, yet once again it shows the changing dynamics between characters as the season progresses. Understated scenes such as these really do change the pace of a particular story arc, and again, prop s to Alan McCullough for yet more wonderful scenes like this.

Sanctuary "Vigilante" - Tesla smiling (at Will)

Having found out that the beetles had been hijacked as a carrier for a micro-abnormal similar to the rabies virus only further ups the ante and now we’re left worrying not only if Magnus will survive, but if Henry will too.

A quick teleport around the world later and we’re now in China with Magnus and Druitt, still on the hunt for the remaining piece of the keystone. Once again, Helen’s determination is mind-blowing…and arguably just crazy. Taking tablets to fight off radiation poisoning, only to then head to retrieve an option that emits radiation – sounds like a great plan of action…Sanctuary "Vigilante" - Biggie, Kate, Tesla & Will discussing plan

Luckily, the rest of the team back at the Sanctuary are more sensible when it comes to tracking down their criminal. Not surprisingly, the connection between the deaths is the protection of abnormals, and the next crime scene is set to be the Vigil which was laid out at the start of the episode.

As Will, Kate and Biggie rush in an attempt to stop the next attack, it seems Agent Corrigan has decided to set-up her own stake-out and follows the team into a situation it’s obvious she is unprepared for.

Helen’s genius plan of action seems to be going well…perhaps a little too well considering the artefact is in plain view and the room is empty. ‘Too good to be true’ seems to be proven right here as Magnus suddenly finds a knife to her throat, but teleportation and kick-ass fighting skills are as good as anything to get themselves out of a twist.

Sanctuary "Vigilante" - Magnus hostage by abnormal

Unfortunately, it takes a while longer for the rest of the team to get themselves out of the trouble created by unearthing ‘Father Clark’ as the man behind the deaths. First they have to escape from aggressive Sypher beetles, and then Biggie has to find Clark, surviving a few bullets to the chest in the meantime.

Sanctuary "Vigilante" - Father Clark with gunHowever, Clark makes one mistake in all of this; he threatens Magnus. Over the seasons, the team have grown stronger and their loyalty to one another is not something to be questioned. Plus the relationship between Magnus and Biggie is something special, he’s prepared to fight for her, die for her. Even kill for her, as Corrigan finds out when she crashes the party. Seriously, there is something about that woman that I’m not sure about; the way she goes about things in this episode just makes her looks overly suspicious. Not really the best image to portray, yet she kind of redeems herself with her sympathy for the Big Guy. If the writers keep her around, I’m sure she’ll be an interesting character to explore; her motives are definitely intriguing already.

Also, the depth this episode has brought to Biggie’s character is quite remarkable. We don’t often get to see his emotional side, so his outbursts of both anger and of sorrow are a good step forward in presenting the real Biggie, the one who is more than the butler for the Sanctuary. It’s something I hope they’ll explore more.

Sanctuary "Vigilante" - Biggie and Kate in infirmary

As Corrigan departs, we are given more of a push to trust the character, Will certainly does! However, Will trusting her doesn’t necessarily address the level of secrecy she’s perpetuated through the episode. Maybe she’s not so bad, who knows?

And as all those loose ends are tied up, more are unravelled to replace them, as Magnus, Druitt and Tesla discover what happens when the right piece of the keystone is inserted into the virtual city. With the answer being that Tibet holds the gateway to hollow Earth, we are left with another cliff-hanger. Sanctuary sure does love cliff-hangers!

“Vigilante” ends with a mutual reassurance society between Magnus and Will, yet it’s also a touching moment that just proves the strong bond they’ve created and that Magnus’ illness won’t break it.

Sanctuary "Vigilante" - Magnus reflecting at end of epi

With the closing words of “We’re gonna find the city.” I’m sure we’ll all be staying tuned for “Hollow Men” and will be waiting with bated breath for a long awaited introduction to the actual Hollow Earth. We can hope, anyway!

  • Sanctuary: ‘For King and Country’…A forty-minute, mouth-gaping feature!

    GREETINGS SANCTUARIANS!

Click to visit the official Sanctuary site

Following the overwhelmingly smackdown super-Magnus episode that was ‘Breach’, I think impassioned Sanctuary viewers everywhere could barely expect another episode of such a sheer amount of epic. The utter ferocity of Amanda Tapping’s physicality in that episode, combined with the combination of unbelievably brutal fight choreography and the quiet and poignant humanism left fans all over the world breathless! To exceed the nuclear effect of this episode was inconceivable. And then the following happened:

‘For King and Country’. Sanctuary, Season 2, Episode 8.
Click to visit Sanctuary on Syfy!

    Click to visit NBC Universal

Though perhaps the most anticipated episode of this third season of Sanctuary, nobody could possibly comprehend what it entailed. Was it a grossly epic plot? Was it the character catharsis? Was it historical flashbacks? Was it the fantastic visual effects of Amazing Anthem? Was it the personal chemistry? The passionate depths of emotion? The nuances of the sublime actors? The directing?

Truth is, it was every single one of those. Every. Single. Blasted. One.

    A shook-up Helen Magnus...

Unlike ‘Breach’, ‘For King and Country’ started at a measured pace. The initial energy was urgent, carrying on from the close of ‘Breach’, but did not inspire the edgy mystery that the former episode did on opening. This enabled we anxious viewers (perched on the edge of our sofas, chewing our cushions anxiously…nothing unusual here, carry on please!) to be drawn into the plot immediately and smoothly. Sucked right in. Unknowingly. Into the powerful depths of their clutches. And then the mouth-gaping arc began.

    Magnus on edge...

Helen Magnus’ (Amanda Tapping) defensive, agitated and emotionally charged state creates a perfect bridge between ‘Breach’ and ‘For King and Country’. As she gradually calms from being smacked around concrete walls by a dead classmate, her determination to understand it all begins a new series of action…

The depths of history that this episode burrows into, the emotional arc and personal development of characters, the beauty and attention to detail of the production, all make this episode feel like an entire film within the space of forty minutes. The tasteful abundance of Anthem’s work helps give the narrative the weight it deserves; they have captured the atmosphere of 19th century London gorgeously, while the costume design (Christine McQuarrie) and attention to detail is authentic and beautiful.

    Gorgeous set design, costumes, authenticity

Not just the changing fashion of the clothing as they progress through the eras, but also in style , where it authentically reflects the social and class status of the Five. The superb directing of Lee Wilson, and the tasteful post-production work, created a succinct and clear narrative despite the constant flipping in time periods! The editing is well thought out, as every single scene in the episode fills out the plot arc fantastically, and at the same time allows the full weight of human interaction, and the importance and consequences of those interactions.

It feels like an entire film, so much information crammed into forty minutes, yet at the same time we’re taken on an incredible personal and emotional journey. Even Andrew Lockington, the musical genius, and the glorious work in the music editing reflects the changes in time period sumptuously (including a repetition of a particular theme from ‘Breach’, which catches my inner drum every time!). There are so many important aspects to consider in this episode, that the task leaves me gasping for air. Where in Hollow Earth do we BEGIN?!?!

    The Five

Let’s begin with the crowning glory of genii: The Five. Back in their ‘young and passionate’ days these five, talented individuals assembled and set to work with a common purpose in mind. Helen Magnus, following in her father’s inspirational footsteps, had a brilliant and inquisitive mind, shrewd, cautious, and passionate in her study of abnormal life. The lightning-quick James Watson (Peter Wingfield) was not far away, dedicatedly putting his brilliant genius to work in abnormal research.

The arrogant and witty Serbian ex-pat, Nikola Tesla (Jonathon Young), dedicated his genius to their brilliant work, but we are still to gain light on why exactly John Druitt (Christopher Heyerdahl) and Nigel Griffin (Vincent Gale) were active participants. Druitt may have been there simply as Helen’s lover, but are there more scientific reasons to his interest? Jack the Ripper was an avid anatomist…hmmmmmmm thoughts?

Unlocking the power of the source blood...

The earlier flashbacks in which we see them all together are just delicious, as they labour away at the source blood, trying to unlock its secrets, then interrupted by the nuisance of Adam Worth (Ian Tracey). After Druitt rids them of him, the cocky humour is positively bouncing off the walls:

Druitt: “You have to admit he’s brilliant!”

    Griffin: ” …and British.”

    Tesla: “Hysterical.”

Magnus: “Does anyone else notice something …odd…about Adam?”

Tesla: ‘He just pointed it out, he’s British *winks*”

The entire dynamic between the members of the Five, and also in their contact with classmate Adam Worth and the outside world, is really given weight in the narrative. As Nikola aptly pointed out, they were young, and even a tad arrogant (young, self-confident, invincible!), and their actions and attitudes remind me a little of the ‘Trust Fund’ kids in Season 2’s ‘Sleepers’: Young, self-confident in their brilliance, feeling invincible, and somewhat cliquish. Although *AHEM* it must be said they they do comprehend the consequences of their actions…at least to some extent!

    Breaking the news...delicately

Adam Worth was more than capable of pushing their work forward, yet they bar him from their ‘club’. After Druitt menacingly drives Adam from their lab, the scene between Helen and Worth, as she watches him work a chemical compound on the wall, is key in their attitude toward such an ‘outsider’.

In true Magnus sensitivity, she sincerely appeals to his vanity, to try and soften the blow of their final decision. It will be interesting to see what the more sound reasons for refusing him were, as Magnus said ‘we’re heading on different paths’, after noticing ‘something odd’ about him. Perhaps they already sensed a dormant obsessive darkness in him?

    The hunt...

From that moment on, it seems that the deep chasm between the Five and Mr. Worth began to push apart. Adam was forced to build a desperate bridge in the bid to save his beloved daughter, and despite Helen’s and Watson’s best efforts, the Leukaemia won its war. Was it the loss of his daughter that caused the rift in Adam’s personality? Or, as Will suggested; a betrayed rage at Helen’s pursuit and attempted assassination? Perhaps both. Over to you, Will!

Either way, Adam needed someone to blame for the premature loss of his daughter (much as Helen did), and it fell on Magnus’ and Watson’s shoulders, for their inability to save young Imogene (Margot Berner). The memory is a heart-wrenching revisit for Helen, “The loss of a daughter. It’s a wound that never heals”.

A wound that never heals....the rage begins

Adam seems to be dealing with it a lot differently to her; the continuing post-trauma of his loss seem to have caused Adam’s hatred grow to irrational lengths, while perhaps his spatio-temporal dimensional travel has adverse effects on his mind? Let’s wait and see….*stuffs fists in mouth anxiously*.

There is definitely a sense of sympathy between Magnus and Adam; she is much more forgiving than most of the men around her, and the grief for Ashley that she nurses could help her to form some sort of bond with him. But to do this, she must speak Adam’s language. Hence ‘Breach’ showed the violence that she needed to get through to the beast, contrasted with the soft humanity she employs in this episode to talk to the gentle genius: “I want to help you, Adam”.

I want to help you, Adam...

Helen sincerely regrets the awful action and betrayal she had made a hundred years ago; it goes against all her principles and instincts. Now, Magnus and the Five’s sacrifices for the sake of their work have come back to bite them in the behind, the moral sacrifices they have made have brought a huge threat to the very work they meant to protect. The irony wears a bit of a rough edge!

How much the Five have all changed over the past 100 years! And how much has changed…the devastating loss of the bright James Watson feels pacified a little by his return from the past in ‘For King And Country’, and it was utterly delightful to see him in his original habitat, surrounded by his ambitious peers, and to see his working relationship with Dr. Magnus. We don’t tend to feel the loss of Nigel Griffin so much, as we’ve had very little light shed on his veiled past (AS OF YET!).

Obviously, the greatest change has been in Helen and, through the angst of their relationship, Montague John Druitt. The history of their tearing apart by his demon, the resulting fear and resentment, and the loss of their daughter, has really put them through the mill.

    Alive....barely

Will Zimmerman, poor laddy, is desperately trying to play catch-up in the presence of these ancient genii, yet despite his overwhelmedness, he has learned quickly that he also has his own respectable and capable place in their work. Robin Dunne has, over the entire series, developed with his characterisation the bumpy growth of Will as he continually encounters situations that he simply never imagine possible.

He is loyal to Magnus, but not blind, and has an immensely strong moral integrity…especially for his age! His frustrated confrontation with the fatally ill *WAILS* Magnus shows an ethical consciousness and strength, which is something that the Five seem to have lacked over a century ago. He confronts Magnus with his bitterness: “To protect society, or your work?”. Magnus is not impressed, he’s just a child after all…

We didn't understand the mind back then, Will!!

His sensitive understanding of the complex and fluid psyche is invaluable in a jungle of chemical and biological scientists. Even Helen admitted, throwing her hands in the air, “We didn’t understand the mind back then, Will! We saw him as a threat!”. Yet she has the unique ability to quickly adapt to new and changing concepts. I think her iPhone speaks for itself…BY the WAY. Is Henry’s iPhone app from ‘Bank Job’ available on iTunes yet?!

At this point, I feel the overwhelming urge to hit PAUSE, and pay awed homage to the phenomenal actors in this episode.

Guest artist Ian Tracey…why on EARTH have we not heard about him before this series?! The man IS Adam Worth…both of Adam Worth! The softly gentle Irish nuances are juxtaposed harshly with the rough and crude ‘bully’ within him. While his character is modelled after Jekyll and Hyde, the original writing (James Thorpe), combined with Ian’s humane characterisation, brings the fable to a living and believable reality.

    Did he bring Jell-o?

Ian Tracey IS Adam Worth, a slighted genius traumatised by the loss of his daughter, betrayed, and on a century-old mission for revenge. Ian’s sudden, but smooth, transition between the two personalities are breathtaking, and are so rapid that it takes you a moment to register the change. He is subtle, there is no affectation in his portrayal, but the character opens up in the most organic and quietly natural way possible.

The personal crumbling and fury appears as a natural progression from 100 years ago, to the present day…the actor manages to show 100 years of continuing torment in just a few minutes. The same, of course, can be said for Amanda Tapping, Chris Heyerdahl, and Jonathon Young. Can’t wait to see more of Ian!

    A dormant darkness within...?

Amanda Tapping’s acting especially floored me in this episode. Her expression of the 159 year old Doctor carries so much weight, so much versatility and so much poignancy. Throughout ‘For King and Country’, Amanda’s delivery felt completely organic, unforced, and Magnus’ physical exhaustion, sickness and emotional torment was heart-touchingly real.

It’s the little things that have the most drastic effect, as Amanda once said “small pebbles cause great ripples” and the inconspicuous glances, gentle throw-away comments, and even the moments when Magnus doesn’t speak at all, managed to convey over a century of growth and experience in one fleeting instant.

Click to visit Sanctuary on Syfy!

For Amanda and her character, this episode was a direct contrast to the one which preceded it; a contrast between the raw and gritty physicality, and feminine strength and vulnerability. A sublime delivery, absolutely gorgeous. Perhaps the most beautifully touching scene in the series to date, Helen’s intimate moment of fleeting tranquillity with Druitt is a perfect example where no words are needed, and yet so much can be said.

With the impending doom hanging over their heads, the angst of the past and the uncertainty of the future seem to cloud around their aura of closeness, and come colliding above them during her moment of touching, human need.

    Human need...

Here, Helen is not merely a scientist, but a woman. She is vulnerable, and seems to seek comfort in the relief that he is alive, in the familiarity of his nearness, and the basic need for human comfort. I watched my television screen shudder and melt with ripples of emotion. The delivery was simple, and honest.

It was utterly FANTASTIC to have the sumptuous James Watson (Peter Wingfield) back in the fold, his familiarly suave brilliance reverberated in his classy wit was just DELICIOUS to welcome back. And ever so British. His languorous nationally iconic humour was reflected delightfully in that of Druitt and Griffin, and contrasted even more appetizingly with the Serbian Nikola Tesla, who basically used his own particular brand of wit to throw their comments right back in their faces. The typically English humour is sharp as a knife:

Druitt: “It seems Victoria was wrong, the old boy DOES have a backbone!”

    Dry English humour...

Watson: “He’s not a LORD, he’s a King. And no…go to hell, MISTER Prime Minister”

    Druitt: “Seconded!”

I think this is one of the most delicious exchanges in the episode.

Everyone’s favourite ‘Magneto’, Nikola Tesla seems to have found a new setback: his outdated knowledge. He just doesn’t DO humble, and his final admission of finding Henry’s (Ryan Robbins) expertise in tech rather daunting heralds a new kind of emotional maturing. The 160 y.o. genius who finally hit puberty?! Well maybe not in a physical sense, but definitely in his cranial juices. To humble himself enough to make an admission that, just maybe, he isn’t Captain Invincible, is ringing little tingling bells of emotional growth.

    Humbled...!

Yet he constantly returns to his usual, self-centred, egotistical, conceited…at the expense of his colleagues. Once again, poor Magnus is blinded from the truth by his deceit (“And you are nothing, if not a man of your word!”, though he had good reason for it. Nevertheless, let’s hope it doesn’t go too far though, we love his infuriating snirks!

“I was wrong, there is a God”!

Needless to say, the loss of his Vampiric traits dealt an enormous blow to Mr Tesla, and ever since then, much of his egotistical bravado has been overshadowed by disappointment and a sense of failure. It is as if Nikola has begun to rediscover his new self, and found that he has, like all other humans, his own set of flaws. To live as a Vampire for a century, and then suddenly find oneself mortal, the withdrawals must be enormous!

Even his physical attitude has changed, as we can see in the flashbacks juxtaposed with the present timeline: His normally ramrod straight posture, serenely self-confident, snobbish manner has been melted into a more relaxed and uncertain air. You could even say, more…scruffy-looking. More like a professor and less like Dracula. Even his accent (obviously) has been muted from a strong Slavic “I-vant-to-suck-your-blood’ to sharp-tongued American drawl. Kudos on the accents Jonathon!

Local fares to kill the soul...

Druitt. Oh, Druitt, great to have you back, torn man that you are. Christopher Heyerdahl is a man of mouthgapingly incredible talent. Not only in his versatility with prosthetics and character work, but in the subtleties of his delivery. He has a magnificently theatrical, spellbinding magnetism on the screen. From an over-drugged state, we saw so many stages in his development as an individual in this particular episode.

His character seems to swimming in cruel irony. From that moment on the bridge, in foggy London (thank you special effects!), the fateful promise: ”And when we are done, you and I will begin our dance anew”, to the exchange in the river, where he finds himself (unknowingly) at the mouth to Hollow Earth:

    She will hunt you forever...

Adam: “She will hunt you forever”

    Druitt: “I hope she does”

How will he act from here-in? THE NEXT EPISODE COULD NOT COME SOON ENOUGH!!! *chews fingernails*

But back to the plot. Oh dear goodness, what’s in store?!?! Plotwise, ‘For King and Country’ has the nerve-wracking feel of a season finale cliffhanger. As we’ve discovered, Adam purposefully lured Helen Magnus into his interdimensional wormhole, in the vengeful hope of contaminating her with radiation. Devious b****!!

    Her own prognosis...

With the two of them heading down the dark tunnel toward the heavenly (or otherwise!) light, drastic measures to save Helen’s life are no doubt just out of reach of our vision *CHOKING SOUNDS*. Poor Will has been slammed with world-changing decisions, and though Tesla’s actions through the Sanctuary Charter may seem “dude, that is cold”, it may (or may not have been) a wise decision to make. Even Helen does not protest, though looks somewhat frustrated, but knows she is helpless against the Charter which she herself wrote.

    Heading down the dark tunnel...

Although Magnus’ work constantly puts her life in the line of fire, this is the first time that she is in direct peril….well actually….dying. Helen Magnus, DYING?!? Now all of their fates, the fate of the Sanctuary network, and the life of the beloved Magnus, lies on the young Will Zimmerman.

Helen Magnus and Adam Worth are dying, the remaining members of the Five are back together, and the only chance to save the head of the Sanctuary network is to go to Hollow Earth. The teetering, violent and unpredictable Adam Worth seems to be their only guide.

    Will is handed the reins...

  • Sanctuary Firewall: Return of the Memories

    Hey Sanctuary fans!

After such an amazing season opener, it was understandable that we were all on tenterhooks and waiting for the next and new way in which the Sanctuary team would blow our minds. They did just that by giving us Firewall; an episode full of intrigue, mystery and team relations.

Click to visit Sanctuary at the wonderful SyFy!

    Click to visit NBC Universal!

It starts with an exhausted Will, and I mean, who can blame him? The poor guy has just risen from the dead and encountered yet more of the unknown and the unimaginable with Kali. Add to that a frustrated team feeling the tension and an unidentified abnormal and Firewall starts with a bang. A bang of the abnormal into Will’s car, to be precise. With Will seemingly on another planet, the rest of the team band together to take care of the abnormal. The team dynamic in these opening scenes is quite a feat, and a testament to how well Declan and Kate have integrated into the Sanctuary team. Again, with the tech, you’ve got to love Henry and his ingenious inventions and super guns.

    Sanctuary Season 3 Banner

Kate’s athleticism keeps her away from the abnormal with a little rough and tumble. Declan, bless him, isn’t that lucky. Remind anyone of Season 2’s Hero? Declan sure gets his fair share of the beatings!  Declan’s injury highlights how much the team dynamic has changed from season 2 to season 3, or even from a smaller timescale of Kali to Firewall. Where Declan has slotted himself nicely into the team and has the acceptance and respect of the others, it seems almost as though he is taking Will’s place in this scene because Declan is more of the field operative and receives the attention of the rest of the team when injured whilst Will is seen by himself, distanced from the team.

Maybe this will change again, maybe it’s a one off and Will will return to the dynamic. The question is will it turn into Declan vs Will for that coveted place on the team or will the field team change to incorporate both Declan and Will? And how much say will Magnus have in the dynamic? We all know she often relies on Will, however unwittingly, but her obvious disappointment in him during this scene speaks volumes. It should be interesting to see how the dynamic pans out after this!

Sanctuary: E02 Firewall Opening - Declan MacRae vs Abnormal Fight

The staging of the capture scene is remarkable though, the organisation of the cast in such a small space must take something! Especially with the addition of the special effects and hats off again to Anthem, they keep bringing us not only amazing CGI sets, but also these highly believable abnormals that seem to blend so seamlessly into the Sanctuary reality.

After the credits is when the real tensions of the team start to kick in, a lot of it centring on the future of both Will and the Sanctuary network. However, the fact that the team are willing to bring up Will as a hazard to missions does show the distance forming but it also shows how much Will is valued as part of the team. They still care about him, and this is most likely what prompts the displays of concern.

The echoes of worries are key to this episode as it allows real analysis of Kali and the recent and traumatic events these characters have been through…quite often by the characters themselves! I especially love that “the Big Guy’s stopped smacking him in the head” is thrown in there and acknowledged as a normality! Also, the fact of how well Magnus knows her team is yet another point in her favour…who could want a better boss?! She knows and she understands, and as the heart of the Sanctuary, these qualities are both admirable yet essential, shown by her unwillingness to write Will off straight away.

AND, it deserves an honourable mention. The “Magnuslinger” is just the best name for a weapon…although I would like Henry’s blueprints so I can check that spelling!

A mention must also go to Magnus’ straight talking attitude. Poor Declan is only trying to give advice and keep her apprised of the situation with the Sanctuary network yet I think he honestly forgets how long Magnus has been running the network. She knows how it all works and that sometimes unpopular decisions are the only way to go. However, his mistakes are easily forgiven with the labelling of Wexford as a “tosser”. So true! And about time someone said it out loud. Way to go, Declan!  And thank you to Magnus for making this an entirely quotable scene: “Currying political favour, I’d rather drink coffee.” Oh how I laughed. Priceless. Add to that the suitably chastised look and “I’ll be on my best behaviour…promise”, do you need any more reasons to love the character of Magnus?

Onto the relationship between Helen and Kate; it’s honestly amazing how much it’s blossomed between seasons, the openness and trust displayed by both characters, especially discussing work related matters is again, a tribute to how Kate has become part of the Sanctuary family. Also, the presentation of the now barely existing Cabal is an interesting one. I love how Kate talks almost dismissively about them yet manages to imbue a sense of one-upmanship that the Cabal are no longer and that she can pick what’s left of it apart for intel. Then, once again, priceless interaction over the Sanctuary bank accounts and the light banter that follows.

Sanctuary: E02 Firewall Magnus catching baseball

Then the pro ball catching skills of Magnus are uncovered! Okay, okay, back on track, the ensuing sarcasm about the rules of the game is genius. Hands down genius. However the switch to the serious side is seamless, although not without its misunderstandings over who the “liability” is! This whole scene feels kind of awkward, which is testament to the acting of course, because the dynamic has changed. Both Magnus and Will are working through their own problems, yet they both shoulder responsibility of some kind. Balancing the two is sure going to make a tough time, especially for Will because hey, at least Magnus can remember what’s happened to make her a liability. Poor Will has absolutely no idea what’s happened or how to fix it.

Of course, when two stressed and highly strung people interact, those fireworks will fly. And fly they do, the attack coming from a sensitive Will and being logically and rationally placated by a frustrated Magnus. Will however, is relying on sarcasm as a front for his actual fear of not being in control, although really, perhaps we shouldn’t tell him that because after all, he’s “the guy who sits across from people who suffer from it!” Yet once again, Magnus’ knowledge and understanding of her team come to light, and this is surely what makes her team willing to follow her instructions without argument.

Sanctuary: E02 Firewall Henry Foss, Will Zimmerman, Biggie - Tense conversationAgain, and it has to be said, however briefly, special effects: amazing. Stepping away from that though, the extent of the tension is shown in this scene between Will, Henry and the Big Guy. Even watching it, there’s an awkward aura that says more about the situation then the characters do. Although Will is trying to reach out and regain that dynamic, he is met with a buffer and the previously banned kid-glove treatment. All sense of normalcy in Will’s life has disappeared with the change in relations and as can be seen, this highly affects him, especially because the dynamic and banter between Henry and the Big Guy hasn’t changed, so he feels even further out of the loop than before.

Brief flashes of Will’s memory  of his encounter with Kali and those on the other side provide an insight into a world that intrigues both Will and the audience because it is a plotline that is unknown yet has the possibility to affect the future of Will or the Sanctuary.

And then the funny business starts, the hearing things but not seeing anything. The thoughts of going crazy. The spine-tingling feeling that you’re not alone in the room. It almost seems the set up of a typical horror movie, each character is alone…or are they? Both shock and amusement when it so seems that Henry and the Big Guy were merely sensing each other, until we find out that their abnormal senses aren’t working. Although even in the strangest of situations can Henry come out with a quotable line, in this instance, the completely off topic “What in the sweet Sidney Crosby is going on?” provides the brief light-hearted aspect of the scene.

Which is followed by the very serious aspect of half-naked Will, which I’m sure pleased quite a few of the ladies’ out there if Will is your man. The sleeping pills seem to trigger more repressed memories and we are led through brief remnants of Will’s time on the other side with Kali, followed by an oddly scary face flickering into vision. Supposedly a nightmare as Will looks around his room, but he’s not that lucky as said oddly scary creature is still hanging around causing Will to fall out of bed…which is amusing, out of context, but understandable within.

Sanctuary: E02 Firewall Unknown Abnormal Close-Up

This debacle is followed by the contrasting relative calmness of Magnus in doctor mode as they try to decipher what happened and how it was strong enough for Will to overcome the sedatives. The whole previous scene is shown to have dented Will’s confidence further and to have caused him to see himself as more of a liability, even going so far as to label himself “insane”. However, Magnus is not one to believe anything other than the logical medical reasoning at this point, which quite clearly frustrates Will even more. It’s obvious within this scene that the experiences and situations the team were faced with during Kali have caused them to end up on opposite sides of the line for current situations and beliefs.

Once again the show itself alternates seamlessly between the serious and the lighter scenes as we head back to Kate, Helen and the financial situation of the Sanctuary…albeit a comfortable situation with apparently enough funds accumulated to last another 300 years! However, despite the banter, there is a serious aspect to the relations between the two women at this point. Kate’s source came through on the intel for the earthquakes that stopped the tidal waves, and she informs Magnus with her usual jazz and dramatic recount. Yet this type of presentation seems to work for Kate as she strings tenuous links together to actually make a plausible situation for Magnus to consider.

Sanctuary: E02 Firewall Kate Freelander discussing Cabal Intel with Magnus

We then return to Will, who seems to be trying to regain the old dynamic by attempting to quiz and tease the Big Guy at the same time, about his medical skills. It appears to work as Biggie jokes back and there is a sense that maybe things could still look up for Will in terms of getting back in the groove and into the team, helped on of course, by the Twilight mention…but I shan’t comment on it! I will comment, however, on the concern shown to Will by the Big Guy. It’s kind of endearing and it lets Will know that he isn’t alone in his ordeal and that despite it all, he’s still got friends…a family to support him.

And is it just me, or did the Big Guy’s voice sound a lot more sympathetic at this point? Only at that point though, it returned to normal with the highly amusing announcement that he was going to read a book. I loved the little quirk of the Big Guy’s bookmark being a feather too.

Throughout this, the conference call between all Heads of Sanctuaries is taking place, with Declan seemingly as the mediator. In this scene, we see Magnus and Declan working together to relay the new information about Bertha. Theirs is an interesting dynamic, because whilst Magnus is in charge, even under Sanctuary: E02 Firewall Helen Magnus & Declan MacRae in conference callher command, Declan still has a certain amount of authority when it comes to abnormal matters. Not that the thorn in the side that is Wexford pays any attention to authority…although maybe he should have, Magnus’ put down i s so classy and undermining towards his integrity.

This is followed by Declan jumping on the offensive like a knight in shining a rmour…with a broken arm, causing Magnus to step in and put a stop to what would most likely have descended into a playground squabble between Declan and Wexford over who had more to answer for.  However, due to those actions, we learn more about Gregory Magnus and how and why he set up the Sanctuary and passed it on to Helen, a concept I hope will be further explored at some point this season. In the end, it all concluded how it should, Magnus came out on top and Wexford fell in style…all through unanimous voting. And for the record, I love the timing of those lines. Absolutely perfect in terms of making the effective point needed. Also effective was the classic and totally quotable Magnus response of “Cheeky bastard!” Funny and so Magnus!

Then we return once again to the Sanctuary infirmary where Biggie’s senses are on high alert; however he can’t see anything so returns to his book. And Will continues with is brief flashes of memories. We see a little more of the events of Kali, and are introduced, though by sight alone, to two other characters…perhaps other abnormals with powers like Kali? They certainly looked to be of the status in that world that signifies power. The flashback continues as we saw in the Kali episode, but with an additional split second that adds all the extra intrigue you could want. Who are the four people? Maybe guards? And why is Will’s arm the focus? Why the hissing, burning sound? Like I said, upping the intrigue to levels of ‘just tell me already!’ Which of course, TPTB don’t. Instead we are taken back to a drugged and sleeping, yet still somehow innocent looking Will with his ever faithful bodyguard still reading, though still on alert.

Sanctuary: E02 Firewall Big Guy reading
And of course, the Big Guy was on alert with good reason; the appearance of the newest abnormal is not altogether unexpected when it happens. However, the split second of action before the Big Guy is taken out, is a surprise…until we get to see the creepy abnormals up close. Gaunt, pale and covered in veins doesn’t begin to describe them, neither does their dress code which seems to comprise of a tight lycra cycling outfit! There are also a couple of unidentified symbols on their chests, not that it clears anything up for us, just adds to the mystery of the whole Kali arc because they are obviously there for Will, and we presume, his repressed memories.

Sanctuary: E02 Firewall Abnormals & Will in infirmaryThis time, it is Henry to discover the appearance of the abnormal…something I doubt he expected during his routine computer switch-on, judging by the choking on the snack! Although to give him his due, he responds quickly enough to suddenly have Magnus and Kate running for the infirmary and to a confusing sight. The abnormals hovering over Will’s body obviously look suspect and on closer viewing, with suspicions confirmed, Magnus spontaneously decides to announce their presence.  At this point we also see that the abnormals have the unidentified markings all over their outfits.

Always a woman of action, especially where a member of her team is concerned, Magnus and the kids enter the infirmary only to find that the abnormals have turned invisible again. It’s no surprise that a split second later they’re visible, however it is a shock to see them kicking ass so quickly again. Who could think that these small, barefoot creatures could cause so much damage?…and then just escape, albeit with Henry hot on their invisible tails.  With the immediate threat gone, the next priority is obviously poor Biggie flat out on the cold concrete floor and the patient and focus himself, Will.

Then the real hunt commences with Magnus barking out orders like the seasoned pro she is. The seasoned pro who still wants to learn about previously unknown abnormals, a fact that causes Kate to look distinctly unimpressed; she’s a live ammo kinda girl!

Whilst we presume Kate is off setting up a search and capture plan, Magnus is left examining Will to find out what the object the abnormals had forced upon him. It didn’t seem to have affected him psychologically; he still chooses to hide behind the sarcasm and inane comments to avoid the truth of the matter, that he is a target. Magnus hits the nail on the head, or the hole in the head as the case may be when she finds that the abnormal device has left two small holes in the back of Wills head, near the hip pocampus. Basically, a memory recall device. Interesting.

Back to Kate and Henry on the hunt with all of Henry’s super-tech strapped to their ar ms, chests, legs…wherever something can be strapped to! Not that it seems to be helping much, the abnormals s eem to be one step ahead, theoretically with early warning sensors and the ability to mask their smell and body heat. Kate’s comparison of the early warning sensors of these particular abnormals and Henry don’t seem to sit too well though, at least not judging by Henry’s glance over. However, he manages to latch onto her train of thought with no trouble, which sparks a whole new plan in Henry’s mind. A plan which involves modified-super-tech along with the usual banter and creative names for the weapons followed by the usual Sanctuary: E02 Firewall Henry Foss & Kate Freelander - Abnormal captureissues that abnormals can cause during the hunt, namely cutting power and getting away from attempts to take them down.

While Kate and Henry are together, a twitchy Will is hunting alone, or so it seems to the abnormals. We all of course know that he’s bait, and with the abnormals cornered, Magnus and the Big Guy execute a tactical take down of both abnormals, managing to recover the oh so mysterious device at the same time. Kate and Henry arrive late to the party but amusingly manage to integrate themselves into the scene as though they’ve been there all along. Once again, a testament to how the Sanctuary team have grown and bonded up to this point.

We next see the oddly scary abnormals strapped to beds in the iso rooms, and sound asleep with neutral features definitely makes them decidedly less scary! After the recap of coincidences and Will once again identified as being the focus – at which point he gets a little uncomfortable talking about his own death…something which Kate is quite happy to put into idioms for him. Gotta love the girl and her blatant follow-up insult to psychology! Which of course Will counters with the insomnia and subconscious mind equalling the fact that these repressed memories must be important.

What’s also important though is the newly acquired technology which according to Henry is so “cool” that the word bears repeating a few times, followed by the tenuous link that maybe these abnormals aren’t from Earth! Oh Henry, such a geek, but we love you for it.

Returning to the iso rooms, we are witness to the recently captured abnormals waking up and they don’t appear to be too happy about this turn of events. Although neither does Henry over the ‘alien’ tech and the simple frustration of turning it on, not helped by the fact that it apparently ‘likes’ Kate and hates himself. Little jealousy issues over technology. Bless. This maybe, just maybe turns into a little tantrum and knocking the device out of Kate’s hands. As always, it’s the unexpected that bring things to fruition because low and behold, the device suddenly turns on and transforms into the image of a mechanical spider.

With Henry now satisfied, we return to the still unhappy abnormals who supposedly telepathically decide to take the extreme course of action: setting themselves alight. This looks to cause their bodies to turn into a ceramic type material and subsequently crumble, much to Magnus’ shock and dismay. Self destruct at maximum effect and minimum damage. Quite genius, really.

As the team gather to discuss the recent events, all with varying amounts of interest in the demise of the abnormals, because come on, the intrigue is obviously drawn more towards that ‘alien’ device. While Magnus and Henry delve into their excitement of explaining the device, Kate and the Big Guy look decidedly confused whilst Will understandably seems more and more uncomfortable with every woSanctuary: E02 Firewall Henry Foss trialling device on Will Zimmermanrd he hears…not helped by Kate’s admission of dropping the device. The poor guy is at the feet of his team, there’s no backing away from testing the device and ending the mystery, especially not when the whole team are involved! Although to give her credit, Magnus does manage to offer him the way out, not that he believes it.

Again, a tribute to the close-knit bonds of the team as Will trusts Henry to attach the device to the back of his head, with only his word that it will work. Anticipation builds…and builds…until we are sent back into Will’s memories, only this time with his narration, an interesting decision because it gives us the view of what happened at the time but also the insight of what happened upon reflection. As we follow the events of Kali, the experience is mapped out for us in Will’s own words, meaning that this time we get to see the true events that happened after Kali’s collapse and the true understanding of Will’s sacrifice to save the world. It really brings home how brave he was to agree to die without knowing if he would be revived, and all for the sake of the human and abnormal races. We find that this sacrifice though, is ultimately what stopped the impending mass destruction.

The intriguing and unexplainable is still to come though, as we get a closer look at the four guards surrounding Will and learn that one of them is none other than Gregory Magnus who apparently has a message for Helen. A message that involves burning two numbers and a symbol into Will’s arm on the other side. Nice guy is Gregory!

Back to the present anSanctuary: E02 Firewall Will Zimmerman with message from Gregory Magnusd an obviously emotional and confused Will, I mean wouldn’t you be? You’ve just recovered memories and find in them that you met a guy who you haven’t heard from or seen in goodness knows how long and probably presumed them dead. Wake up call for sure. Especially when he gives you an indecipherable code, or at least you think it is. I feel for Will here, as if he hasn’t already been through enough over the Kali arc, he now has to deal with being the messenger for something he doesn’t know about and doesn’t know what will happen because of it.

The whole re-introduction of Gregory really throws a spanner in the works, even Helen is visibly shocked and it takes a lot to shake that woman. Although as always, her ability to compartmentalize and focus on the here and now is remarkable. Straight away she’s questioning the possibility of avatars for abnormals and who caused the earthquakes to stop the tidal waves. Will is quite insistent however, that she remains on th Sanctuary: E02 Firewall Gregory Magnus in Kali's worlde track of her father’s message, ensuring that she is able to quickly link together the clues and unravel the hidden message. Because a paperweight placed in a certain place on a book obviously equals a holographic, yet touchable city.

At this point, Anthem and Lee Wilson again need another huge shout-out. The effects in this final scene are just mind-blowing, right down to the tiniest of details like the lights in the buildings. Absolutely amazing work. And also amazing work from the cast to have been so talented as to act as though they can see every minute detail themselves. Everything has come together seamlessly in this episode, although if the mystery of this final scene is anything to go by, we should definitely have an intriguing season following this arc through to its end!

  • Los Angeles Stargate 2009: Ryan Robbins – Genii, Abnormal, Charles Manson and More!

Hi Stargate, Sanctuary and Ryan Robbins Fans,CreationConventiontour

The first panel stage guest to kick off the Creation Entertainment Stargate convention on Friday November 06, 2009 was Ryan Robbins! Best known by Stargate Atlantis fans as Ladon Radim and more recently in Damian Kindler’s / Amanda Tapping’s hit series Sanctuary as the now famous Henry Foss, Ryan entered the stage quite literally to a roaring round of applause! My report on Ryan will focus exclusively on Mr. Robbin’s panel stage appearance at the Marriot Hotel located only a few minutes away from the Los Angeles International Airport.

2009 Stargate LA - Ryan Robbins -Courtesy Creation Ent

As with our previous reports about the outstanding talent Creation Entertainment lines up, we will quote Ryan as much as is possible. Items lost due to the crowd hoots, woots, and hollering make direct quoting virtually impossible in some instances. This report uses our standard paraphrased quote format news reporting.

Such will be utilized throughout. Fortunately the notes provided much stimulation to my memory regarding Ryan Robbins guest panel stage appearance and made writing this report a delight as my memory recalled the fun we all had that day with Ryan.

As we have previously reported, with all the other activities at WHR, we had a requirement to post Martin Gero’s quest panel appearance first (out of appearance order to support Stargate Universe), we now resume panel order from the Los Angeles Stargate 2009 Convention from here on out.

2009-SGCon-LA-Fri06-Nov-cSubsequent to when the din from the crowd thankfully died down, Ryan immediately went into discussion of high jinx on the set of Sanctuary. As I have learned, this subject is a fan favorite. Fans love their stars, but convention goers are always interested in behind the scenes action of what makes up the “real life” when filming their shows.

As those whom are familiar with Hollywood productions, or should I Vancouver-Wood where so many television series and movies are actually shot these days, until a star is needed for his or her sequence, they have a fair amount of time to study lines and just hang out until they are called to the “set”. The sharing of these experiences make these reports all the more delightful.

Billed as a Stargate Atlantis star at Creation’s event, I have come to find out that Henry Foss of Sanctuary is far more beloved that Ladon Radim. And why not? Ryan’s role in Atlantis was not that short Sanctuary-SyFy-HenryFoss-02-clived, but only lasted for a bit, while his Henry Foss role is featured virtually every episode of Sanctuary. Therefore the question and answers started with a particularly funny high-jinx played on Ryan Robbins on the Sanctuary back lot by Robin Dunne who portrays Will Zimmerman on Sanctuary.

First Fan Questioner: “Were there any jokes played on you during filming of Sanctuary?”

Ryan Robbins: “Yes. Robin Dunne had a new video camera for filming some Sanctuary behind the scenes clips. I saw him come running out of my trailer with his new camera. Robin had decided to use a jar of Nutilla peanut butter and smeared it all over the toilet!”

Crowd: Oh my god and oh no’s. Many were laughing hysterically, including me despite the potty humor perpetrated by Robin Dunne on Ryan Robbins!

Ryan Robbins: “Your reaction is a lot nicer than mine was! Not very easy to clean up either! So I waited for about three weeks to get even. Then I went into Robin Dunne’s trailer and hid all of his clothes!”

    Crowd: Much laughter!

Ryan Robbins: “So imagine Robin Dunne walking all around in only his socks and boxer shorts when we heard him screaming ‘has anyone seen my pants!?! ’  So that was how I got back even with Robin Dunne”.

    Crowd: Much laughter.

Ryan Robbins continues: “So anyone who has wondered why my fingernails are painted black? My SG Con L.A. Fri 06 Nov 2009 (5)daughter wanted me to go with her on Halloween last week and I did not know what to be, but I did have vampire teeth from the TV series [… missed cannot remember the series name…] where I played a vampire. They had these teeth made for me that are insanely cool. But I did not want to be a vampire. Everybody is a vampire [on Halloween]. So I decided to be a pirate, a ‘Vampirate’! That’s how I got black nails and how I was a vampire and I do not even own nail polish. So I am just going to have to live with it or smash every finger I have!”

    Crowd: Giggles and laughter.

After this the crowd was a bit overwhelmed by the frankness of Ryan Robbins. As we have previously reported by SciFiFanGirl616 this was Ryan’s first convention appearance in two years and his first ever in the United States. As such Ryan was a bit of an unknown to the Los Angeles convention attendees and the interaction was at first clumsy as the regular attendees in Los Angeles needed to learn how to warm up to him and for Ryan to warm up to the crowd. Ryan sensed this and then asked:

Ryan Robbins continued: “So [does] anyone have any questions?”

Next Fan Questioner: “What kind of abnormal is Henry [on Sanctuary]?”

Ryan Robbins: “We call Henry a Protean. When Henry starts turning into an abnormal, the expression used is going [comment not captured]. I do not know why. Effectively Henry is a werewolf but like the Egyptian god Anubis. You know with the big sloped kind of head like in the mythology?”

WR_Systems shouts out: “We [Stargate fans] don’t know anything about Anubis Ryan!”

Crowd: Breaks out in raucous laughter.

Ryan Robbins: “You know nothing about Anubis eh? [Chuckles] Well that was the original idea to have the elongated Anubis head for Henry. It happens when there is a full moon and so don’t make me [Henry] angry! Did you guys see that episode?”

Crowd: Yelling and screaming in the affirmative.

Ryan Robbins: “You know it is supposed to be a closed set location outside. So there we are outside and SG Con L.A. Fri 06 Nov 2009 (11)there is a microphone floating above for sound and I guess it was already warmed up and I said this is “F’d” up [censored] cause I was virtually naked when our lovely staff line producer had decided to arrange a set tour [at NorCo Studios location shoot] that day!  I said ‘welcome to Canada as I was nearly naked!’ It was awesome [tongue in cheek]. There I was on the grass bleeding with all these fans watching! Yeah well, that is how our show works.”

Crowd: More raucous laughter and applause.

By this point the convention attendees and Ryan had broken the ice with each other. The fans in the audience where now much less shy about getting up to the microphones and asking Ryan questions.

Next Fan Questioner: “I love you on Sanctuary and I think you are adorable, honestly. I was wondering is there going to be any romance in Henry’s future.”

Ryan Robbins: “He really does doesn’t he? Episode seven [Veritas] is a great Henry back story show. This episode alludes a bit to Henry’s relationship issues. So there is something in that. There is this funny rule in television where you know where the hero’s are never truly happy with their lot in life. Or so the writers keep telling the actors. ‘Ryan pretending to be scriptwriter: We may let you be happy for an episode or two!’ Henry is not really smooth with the ladies, but I got a smooch last season.

    Crowd: More giggles.

Ryan Robbins: “So you know that is how it is and I am hoping Henry gets a little more action this season. I am in for it and thank you so much for the question. Anyone else with a question?”

Next Fan Questioner: “What do you find unique about working on Sanctuary?”

Ryan Robbins: “Thank you. I think on Sanctuary because it started as a web series, it really is a family SG Con L.A. Fri 06 Nov 2009 (14)environment there. It may sound like a cliché’ but it is true. Sanctuary became the little show that could [referring to the old children’s tale about the ‘little train engine that could’]. It is about a bunch of people that got together for the sheer love of it. That is how it started as an independent film project so everybody put their heart and soul into it. The show does not have a lot of money, so we appreciate the fans that stayed with us from the web series. Lots of great fans. They enjoyed the power of new media on the web that has helped the show.  We worked to get a great network and now that has happened with [SyFy] we are in 80 countries now and it is really give me a sense of pride having been there from the beginning. I love it, it’s the best I have ever had.”

Next Fan Questioner: “You do a great job in both Stargate Atlantis episodes. I have a two part question on Sanctuary: ‘First is a follow on about the question about the romance for Henry. Being that you have the werewolf half is that going to be good? Do you think they will work that into the story?”

Ryan Robbins: “Well about the whole ‘Werewolfy-ness’, episode seven alludes to that because it has a lot to do with Henry as an abnormal. It is a good episode, a Henry episode, so it was a lot of fun.”

Same Fan Questioner: “My second question is about working with Amanda Tapping. Is it the same or is it different on Sanctuary, you know the family part?”

Ryan Robbins: “Well it’s funny because I did not know Amanda and had never worked with her before the web series for Sanctuary. Our paths never directly crossed on [Stargate] Atlantis. But I knew Amanda socially. You meet a lot of people in the entertainment business that make a good presentation of themselves. But every so often you meet somebody like Amanda Tapping who is special, who are Chicago2009-AmantaTapping-03-creally genuine inside and out. Amanda is like that. When you show up at work, Amanda is so real. She is the star of the show and knows that all eyes are turned on her. Yet she still gives that crazy Amanda Tapping smile that sets a tone and everybody wants to do a good job. When she directed, man, we were under budget, under time required; we had like an eight hour day! That is unheard of in this business when normal days are 14 hours or longer.  That is a statement on how hard everyone wants to work for Amanda. That is how good she is. I could go on about Amanda forever!”

Same Fan Questioner: “Where did you meet her, what is her personal background?”

Ryan Robbins: “Well in England. She is from England you know. I met her there. I think she speaks part French. So many people speak more than one language, but not me. I do not even try to speak with her in French. All I speak is English and gibberish! Sorry.”

Next Fan Questioner: “I here you are working on a new web series called ‘Riese Series’, can you tell us about that?

Ryan Robbins: “You mean that show?

SG Con L.A. Fri 06 Nov 2009 (27)I recall that Ryan was wearing a t-shirt with a logo emblem on it at which point he showed the new shows t-shirt proudly. Many in the crowd and all of us on Twitter know about this show and Ryan’s announced role in it. The crowd once again broke out into hoots, whistles, yelling and screaming in support as he posed in several funny ways for the audience!

Ryan Robbins: “You mean that show? Yes, I was just signed on to work on it. It’s awesome and is a webisode based series [much like Sanctuary was]. I know the people making the show and am in awe of what they are doing. The potential of the how and the way that it has been marketed and the writing is amazing. When I was asked to be part of it, my decision was a no-brainer. My role is outstanding not like any I have been playing lately. I do not know if you are aware of the series, but you can go to the web site (http://www.riesetheseries.com/ ) and check it out. I think it is going to be huge and I am happy to be part of it. I start shooting at the end of November this month and I think they just showed the first webisode or are going to.

WR_Systems: “It was just this week.”

Ryan Robbins: “Oh thanks, that’s right. I had watched it [before release] and it was awesome and cannot wait to see the next one so I am very excited to be part of it. It has an amazing cast with Ben Cotton, Christine [… last name of cast in low voice – could not capture …] Shannon Taylor and Patrick Gilmore [of Stargate Universe]. Hey does anyone watch Stargate Universe?”

Crowd: Many applaud and yell yes we do, but a one fan said no.

Ryan Robbins: “Does that make you uncomfortable [looking at a fan who said no].” Ryan then said that Patrick Gilmore was is the back of the room and gestured towards him. “Do you want to say hi?” Patrick said hi to a round of applause. “I just had to Patrick. He and I are going to hang out later tonight with the fans at Karaoke. He and Peter Kelamis are going to be my posse! They are way funnier than I am. So what else do we have?”

Next Fan Questioner: “Can you tell me a little about your work on Atlantis?”

Ryan Robbins: “Sure. I was supposed to die like in the second episode. But Martin Wood said ‘Nawww, I like your character, so no you are not going to die. I liked that. So I got to hang around the series. Then in one episode I got like shot through the Stargate. And it is just a set, they is nothing on the other side, but it was cool. Then Robert Davi as Kolya was supposed to come on the show to take the place of the bad guy to replace the one that was to get killed [Colm Meaney] and I got the call and they said do you want to be the leader of your people [the Genii]?I said yes, YES!. I got the opportunity to sit with then for days; I mean their two resumes are just amazing. It went from there and they just kept bringing me back. They gave me a lot of freedom because Ladon started as a scientist, but now he is going to be the leader of the Genii.  So what do you do with that? We had a lot of fun playing with that type of leader and how that was going to work out. Can they trust this guy [meaning the folks on Atlantis], although Ladon is definitely doing the right thing for his people. So that was fun and was how I met Martin [Wood] for the Sanctuary show. But it was my first steady show and as for the Atlantis show the people were just having a lot of fun! A lot of those actors are still good friends of mine to this day. It was a great experience you know but was bittersweet mostly because I was not there anymore. So I was like …. ”

Next Fan Questioner: “How are you going to be able to do both Sanctuary and Riese?”

Ryan Robbins: “It is crazy but Sanctuary is on Hiatus now and there is no conflict at the moment and I am also shooting for Caprica right now. When I finish Caprica it will be in time to do Riese so timing is perfect. Riese Series is a webisode so you can shoot many at a time so it makes it easier. But I am just going to be very busy going to work on Caprica, then shooting Riese

Next Fan Questioner: “Is your beard for one of them?”

Ryan Robbins: “Yes, they made me grow a beard for Caprica. It is very different from anything you have seen me do. It is nothing like you have seen me do before. I thought that would be a problem because it happens before the BattleStar Galactica story, and they were thinking of bringing in some BSG characters but they decided against that to do a fresh new story. Eric Stoltz who I am a big fan of requested that I appear in Caprica, but he had to put up a bit of a fight. He finally cleared it with them and that is how I got the part. The network was more concerned about Sanctuary than Caprica because the guy I am playing was just not Henry. He did not look like Henry or act like Henry, so I am playing a dangerous dude in Caprica. So now during Sanctuary hiatus I get to play a couple of very dangerous dudes. The character on Riese is a very bad guy, lots of fighting.”

Crowd: More giggles and chuckles about Ryan playing the bad guy.

Ryan Robbins continues: “It is kind of like last year’s Hiatus when I played the character Charles Manson in a film. What an interesting life I have to go from Henry to Charles Mason! I play Henry all year long and then on hiatus I go play bad dudes. I love my job!”

Next Fan Questioner: “Hi Ryan. Two things. First can you talk about your jewelry?

Ryan Robbins: “Wow, yes I errr. Wow, now I am going to be embarrassed. My jewelry, yeah let’s talk about my jewelry. It has been the topic of conversation at a few places I have been. I have [body] piercings. I had my nipples done and pierced. It happened for a show I did called ‘The Dark’. On Sanctuary the one show it was visible so I cannot tell you more that what you saw there.”

This was a question known to fascinate the fans and the audience was very quiet during this period of the question and answer provided.

Same Fan Questioner: “Did it hurt?”

Ryan Robbins: “YES! It hurt a lot!”

Same Fan Questioner: “Well sorry that is not what I was talking about, I was simply asking about your wrist watch.”

This fan had totally set Ryan up getting the answer to what she really wanted while appearing to be asking an ‘innocent’ question. The crowd erupted in total hysterics for over several minutes, perhaps SG Con L.A. Fri 06 Nov 2009 (20)nearly five in total. Everyone in the convention hall simply roared with laughter at his predicament! I also clearly remember Ryan putting his head into his hands knowing he had been trapped by an agile fan. He took it quite well considering the fan had totally set him up for a fall. Ryan shook his head back and forth as well, looking behind himself on stage for a place to hide! However it was obvious Ryan was simply planning for a comeback to this sly fan of his! I was certain that he needed a little time and encouragement to launch his retort, saying in a very loud voice:

WR_Systems: “It is okay Ryan. You did great!”

While mustering his composure, I remember Ryan feigning like he was hiding behind the podium on stage looking down. The great performer that Ryan is, he was clearly having fun acting out this little play for us on stage. Then he stated:

    Ryan Robbins: “Next question!”

Crowd: Laughing continued as Ryan played the laugh lines to the hilt!

Same Fan Questioner: “Are you still there? “I was only referring to the jewelry around your wrist!”

Ryan Robbins: [Resigned to his fate] “Yeah right, go on, but I’ll get even with you too!”

Ryan returned to his directors chair on stage but put his head into his hands again as the   laughter grew to an even higher pitch! I heard several fans close by say “poor guy”, and “I like where you went with it!” The laughter continued and then a revelation”

Ryan Robbins: [admitting] “We know each other!” [It had all been a total setup].

Ryan then went on to describe the watch and that he was having a necklace made by the same manufacturer. Although a complete setup to amuse the fans, the two [whom I was both to meet later] had played out the stage levity perfectly! It was a high-light of Ryan’s appearance, a little more than 60% through his time on stage.

Ryan Robbins: [admitting further] “The watches and other jewelry I wear are blessed by Buddhist Monks and have been given to me by various people. They are very special to me. I wear them everywhere and are important to be, especially the Tibetan beads because I do not like to fly and they make me feel good. Ironically they are supposed to remind me to talk less and be silent which obviously did not work in this instance”

Same Fan Questioner: [now serious] ”My other question is can you tell us a little more about ‘Leslie, My Name is Evil’ referring to the Charles Mason portrayal a year earlier.”

Ryan Robbins: “Yes. In ‘Leslie, My Name is Evil’, I play Charles Manson. I am not sure when it is coming out. I heard perhaps spring of 2010. It is directed by an amazingly talented person [unintelligible – not captured]. It is loosely based on the Charles Manson trial and is also about Leslie van Haughton [co conspirator of the slaughter of actress Sharon Tate]. It is more of a statement film that a biography. It is an interesting idea because we sometimes do not learn from our history [as a society]. History repeats itself over and over again, so it is nice to look at history from a skewed perspective to help us learn from our mistakes. It draws some interesting parallels. People will learn to hate it [about what happened with Sharon Tate]. It was an intense movie and was satisfying to make.”

Same Fan Questioner: ”I saw it at the Vancouver film festival and thought it was an amazing movie. It displays your real raw talent. You are an amazing actor in whatever you do! It was just incredible.”

Ryan Robbins: “Wow. Thank you very much.”

Next Fan Questioner: ”I really liked you in the “Guard”. Is it done or will there be more episodes of it?”

Ryan Robbins: “Well thank you. Yes it is done. It is airing now. I think the last six or seven episodes. Not everyone here knows, but it is a show I did in Canada. It was a really fantastic show, but it is done. ”

Same Fan Questioner: ”Well I watched you in Sanctuary and Atlantis and enjoy you, but in ‘The Guard’ it brought out a different side of your acting. I really enjoyed that”

Ryan Robbins: “Thank you very much. Keep the questions coming…”

Next Fan Questioner: ”Sanctuary question. Is Chris Heyerdahl as scary in real life as he is on Sanctuary and how tall is he?

Ryan Robbins: “No. But he can be very intimidating in person. Chris is about six foot four and of course that voice of his. He just has a great voice and he is a very good friend of mine. He was at my house the day my daughter took her very first steps. He is an amazing man and one of the most generous people I know. He is incredibly gifted and works very hard at what he does. He is awesome. He is one of those guys when you are talking to him he will just stare you down as if asking are you judging me? He just listens so much it is like he is not participating in the conversation. He is really nice but then stares you down again and then he finally responds. Just a couple of words usually.” Making a parody of the topic, Ryan said: “I listened to you my whole life and I only get just four words?” Mocking Chris in a gentle way: ‘I am sorry, did you want my life story?” Nawwww. “We were out one night […], I do not know if I should tell this story”

Ryan was obviously goading the audience into making him TELL the story.  His tactic worked perfectly because several in the crowd obliged Ryan by begging him to please tell the story!

Ryan Robbins: [Continuing] “Robin Dunne, Chris and I were out late one night at a bar after work. It was a Friday after a long day on the set. The server brought us our pints of Guinness and we began drinking them. Before long the bartender said ‘last call’ so we ordered another round. Then before we knew the bartender came by and said ‘pound them down we are closing up’.  We were stunned because after all it was Guinness we were drinking [as all Guinness drinkers know, you sip it you do not ‘pound’ it!].  We looked at the bartender incredulous and I said “Great we will finish our drinks and then we will go. The bartender got belligerent for no reason because we were very courteous about the whole thing. I did not know why anyone would get upset with us for no reason. [Sarcastic] I mean Robin Dunne and I had only been playing the head butt game! And suddenly the bartender came out from behind the bar all mad, so he comes over. Then Chris slowly gets up from his chair [to reveal his towering frame] saying ‘What do you think you are doing?’. The bartender scooted back behind bar so fast it was hilarious.

I hoped we had a picture of this because Ryan had been play acting out the entire sequence to the delight of the convention audience evidenced by their loud laughter. Unfortunately the one I took did not turn out well. 🙁

Ryan Robbins: [Continuing] “Chris just stood there glaring at the bartender like when your parents give you that look of being disappointed with you! You know what I mean, like the worst feeling in the world? The bartender looks scared out of his wits. I think he must have needed counseling after that because he [Chris] is just so powerful.”

From the play acting done so well, we could really feel that is exactly how the bartender must have felt. Ryan’s performance was smooth and enjoyably perfect!

Next Fan Questioner: “Did you plan to become an actor?”

Ryan Robbins: “I wanted to act since I was 12 years old. I became interested during orientation for an acting class school and this one person blew my mind. I then knew that acting is what I wanted to do. I wanted to be so many things when I was a kid, I realized that if I became an actor I could be anyone I wanted but I did not know how to do it. I went to theater and learned in school. I ended up being a circus performer because I had this acrobatic skill thing. I had a friend who was doing stunt work and he said I should come to Vancouver. I said I’ll try that, so I did. Then I had an accident and hurt my spine which ended my stunt work. After that I joined a band that became popular. So I had a run for six or seven years as a musician.”

At this point we all noticed that Ryan’s attention shifted away from continuing his career path story. He was looking towards the back of the room. The crowd all yelled YAY! Ryan waved his hands motioning for someone to come up on stage.

Ryan Robbins said: “That is my wife and daughter back there! Gesturing do his family, do you want to come up and say hi?”

SG Con L.A. Fri 06 Nov 2009 (28)To the sounds of ‘awwwwww’ Ryan’s daughter joined him on stage. Although he mentioned her name to the intimate crowd in the audience, we will omit said name out of respect for his family privacy, particularly for his daughter. The scene continued for about five minutes to the wonderment of the crowd. Protecting her from photos [which no one took of her face to the best of my knowledge] and with her back to the audience, Ryan gave her a big hug:

    Ryan Robbins daughter said: “Hi!”

After his daughter left the stage to more ‘awwwwww’s’ Ryan continued.

Ryan Robbins: “And? Oh yeah, about the story about the band and how I got into . A filmmaker was a friend of the band who cast me. I ended up with an agent and it all just went from there and here I am. It is funny how that worked out. From my dream at twelve years old it took until I was twenty-six to become an actor. I tried to make that a short story, but …. That was my daughter and that is that!”

Same Fan Questioner: “I just wanted to say I saw Chris in Twilight.”

Ryan Robbins said: “Yeah, on that really long drive from the airport [10 minutes maximum] I saw a billboard with Chris’ picture on it.

Next Fan Questioner: “I have a two part question. You are playing good guys and bad guys. Do you have a favorite between the two?” My second is of all the roles you have played which has been the toughest emotionally?”

Ryan Robbins: “The Mason role has been the most demanding. That took a lot out of me. That was a very difficult role for ne, especially coming out of it”. As far as between the two, I like playing bad guys now.  At first I liked playing good guys, but now I am enjoying playing the bad guys again. A fun part is that bad guys do not think they are ‘bad’.  There is a lot of depth in a bad guy. It’s tough. But I really just like what I do acting good or bad.  When I play bad guys it’s one thing. But when I play a good guy, I always try to give them a dark secret making it more interesting. Before I knew that Henry was going to be abnormal, I gave him a dark secret. With Ladon I had a dark secret that he was in love with someone from Atlantis just to make up a dark secret. Things like that. When you are a bad guy, they have dark secrets, It’s natural cause we all have secrets.”

At this point Ryan changed pace to make a point and gestured once again to Patrick Gilmore and Peter Kelamis from Stargate Universe at the back of the room.

Ryan Robbins: “Hey I do not want to put you on the spot, but those two guys are really funny. Like both can do stand-up comedy, but you get those two playing dark roles, and it is freakish how good they are! There is something about that if you can tap into being a really good guy you can also tap into being a really bad guy rather than being a neutral player if that makes sense.”

Several in the crowd nodded in the affirmative before Ryan noticed something to his left. At this point only about five minutes remained as the handler gestured at her watch. I had thought that the stage appearances were an hour long, but in checking the schedule each was actually only scheduled for 45 minutes.  We cherished our last remaining minutes of Ryan Robbins stage appearance and the last question. Since there were no more people at the attendee microphones, the last question came out of ‘thin air’.

Creation Entertainment Questioner from backstage hidden microphone: “Before you leave, could you tell us about the Green Screen process in Sanctuary?”

Ryan Robbins: “Yeah. For me it is a little different because most of my sets in the laboratory have a lot of props. Because I interact with so many props, I do not have to worry much about the Green Screen. But there is an awful lot of Green Screen in Sanctuary. The other practical set is Magnus’ office except for outside the office windows, those are obviously Green Screen. We has to get used to something early one about the size of this room. It is just GREEN all around and it is NOT a pretty green! You can get a Green Screen headache! It’s like when someone flashes a camera at you and you look away, there it is. When you work all day in Green Screen and walked into a different room, you tend to blink GREEN. It’s a weird bizarre feeling. It would be like that if you had to stare at any one bright color.

“I have a really active imagination anyways, so it is not hard for me to image the ‘worlds’ that will be there. That is my job. The thing that blows my mind is that no matter how I imagine the ‘world’ I am playing in, when I see the finished product, I am amazed. Also the creatures we deal with all the time we are running around being chased by stuff we cannot see when filming. But they do show us pictures of the monsters. But when acting all it is just a punching bag wrapped in green! Or the last episode that air ‘Hero’ the guest star Chris Gautier was just hanging on the punching bag fighting it, it was so different because I saw it when everyone else saw it, I said that thing is crazy!

“That is how it is all the time. They try to tell you with stage markings, walk here, but do not walk here. I asked why and they said because you will fall eight stories to you death!” Sometime we miss the marks and we have to re-shoot… because you are working with Robin Dunne and I push him over the edge! Hahaha I killed you! So yeah it is interesting”

No new fan with only a minute or so left came up to the microphone, so I asked a question from my seat in a booming voice so that all could hear.

Sanctuary-S1-BigGuy-cLast Fan Questioner – WR_Systems: “Sanctuary question. You and ‘Big Guy’ have developed a real nice on screen believable set of interactions. Like in the last episode aired, in the hallway, it just was genuine. Can you tell us about that?”

Ryan was laughing a bit with a smile on his face. He repeated the question from his microphone so that folks in the way back could appreciate his answer.

Ryan Robbins: “I am laughing because there are jokes on set about Henry and the ‘Big Guy’. It is not ‘that’ way. It a father son relationship. As I said, Chris Heyerdahl and I are good friends, so we work well off of each other. Even early on with John Druitt scenes before Henry became a werewolf, when we work together it developed naturally into what you see today. The relationship came through with Henry trying to deal with being a werewolf and Big Guy understood that. The fact that Henry grew up in the Sanctuary with Helen as a mother figure, so Big Guy became a father figure. NOT that Helen and Big Guy are THAT way, not at all!

The crowd laughed at the reference that such a relationship could even be considered. They laughed even harder with what Ryan eluded to next!

Ryan Robbins: [continuing] “I am no dummy and know what ‘shipping’ is! At least I know now! Amen!

Someone in the back of the room shouted “You are not the only one with an active imagination [referring to fan fiction ‘shipping”] The crowd burst into laughter once more!

Ryan Robbins: “Hey someCliff-Simon-Ryan-Robbins-01c of the fans who write fiction are right on about what will happen and it amazes me. But sometimes the fan fiction is so far off, I say, wow that is way off, but is kind of cool! It is a whole different [another] show! I don’t really look for it, but every so often someone on the show will send me some.”

At this point the handler re-appeared with the proverbial axe across throat gesture

Last Fan Questioner – WR_Systems: “Last thing. Twitter. We know the real Amanda Tapping is on there, and we would love to see all of your Sanctuary team on Twitter, but did you know that someone is impersonating Henry Foss (you) on Twitter?”

Ryan Robbins: “[Sarcastically] “Oh thank you so much for for that! Wow! Som2009-LA-SGCon-Wr_Systems-Ryan-ceone is being me on Twitter! I guess you know you have arrived when that happens! I have finally arrived! Thank you!”

And with that Ryan’s panel stage appearance was over to a round of applause that lasted for at least a minute. It was a wonderful experience enjoyed by all.

As our team has previously reported, Ryan would invest much more personal time that evening with his fans at the Creation Entertainment Karaoke event where I had the opportunity to chat with him and Cliff Simon.

And speaking of Cliff Simon, we will resume our coverage of the Los Angeles Stargate 2009 Convention when we return from the Holidays!

    Merry Christmas!

    Best Regards,

  • Sanctuary- From Requiem to Next Tuesday: Will & Helen, Then & Now

It’s our relationships with our friends, families and co-workers that help define who we are. Friends become such a necessity in life that many of us can never imagine a time when we had none, some of us will never forget.

"Requiem" copyright Syfy, NBC UniversalSo when you’re 158 years old and you know you’ll outlive all of your friends, what are you to do? One answer would be to spend eternity in seclusion. The other answer is to surround yourself with the people that matter most to you, your family and friends.

Sanctuary fans learned in the first season that Helen decided to give birth to Ashley when she could bare the loneliness no longer. Of course now Ashley is gone, so where does that leave Helen? She is surrounded by her friends, her other family, and still there seems to be this sense of loneliness in her.

Sanctuary-S2x08-Next-Tuesday-09At the beginning of this week’s episode titled ”Next Tuesday,” we learn that Henry and Big Foot are off surfing leaving Helen, Will and Kate at the Sanctuary. Will is pestering Helen to give him time off to attend a conference in Iceland. The real reason, we later learn, is to visit his internet romance. Will spends nearly the entire episode, from the time they’re in the helicopter to when they’re stranded in the oil rig, whining about not being able to attend. After losing Clara we can understand his need for companionship, but he’s so focused on his own woes he completely misses the deeper implications of his arguing with Helen.

“Next Tuesday” is another Helen and Will centered episode where viewers get to examine their complex relationship. However, unlike the Season One smash hit “Requiem,” where we also saw Will and Helen thrown into tight quarters under stress, “Next Tuesday” has a completely different tone to it.

Sanctuary-S2x08-Next-Tuesday-17Viewers are shown Helen and Will in another physically uncomfortable situation, this time trapped in an oil rig instead of a submarine. Director Martin Wood, who also directed “Requiem,” seems to find great delight in putting these two characters in emotionally stressful situations. However, it’s Martin Wood’s delight that has given viewers two unique chances to examine the deeper threads of Helen and Will’s relationship.

"Requiem" copyright SyFy, NBC UniversalIn “Requiem” we saw Helen and Will trapped inside a submarine facing an unknown pathogen. The quarters were tight. There was no one else for them to talk to, and they faced a situation that ultimately ended with Will having to kill a raging Helen. A bit stressful, no? But it was this episode that first gave viewers that look inside their relationship. We learned through their interactions that there are deeper bonds of friendship there between them. We saw the heartbreak in Will’s eyes when he killed Helen, heard the terror and remorse in his voice when he was trying to bring her back, and felt the strength of his joy when she took her first breath.

The same cycle of loss was briefly felt in “Next Tuesday” when Helen is trapped in the air vent and Will races to free her. We saw the same look in Helen’s eyes when Will was being pulled under by the squid. It’s obvious that these two characters care greatly for one another.

However, unlike in “Requiem,” “Next Tuesday” seemed to be offering us less of a glimpse into Helen and Will’s relationship, at least on the surface. If viewers paid very close attention to the physical reactions of the actors, a whole other story is told. On the surface it seems that Helen’s refusal to let Will attend the Icelandic conference is cold hearted and precipitated by her jealousy over his internet relationship. It’s Amanda Tapping’s facial expressions, the sadness in her eyes that tells another story. Helen was clearly not telling Will something and in an effort not to admit her own emotional weakness, she uses his relationship with the other psychologist as an excuse. Her comments are biting and cold, perhaps brought on by Will’s irritating persistence on the matter, but nonetheless, served to hide her emotional fragility.

"Requiem" copyright SyFy, NBC UniversalThis is very characteristic of Helen. She’s a strong woman and given her position, is always expected to be strong. Her career defines her, literally. It seems that one of Helen’s greatest fears is to show weakness or vulnerability. When she brought Will onto the team, it was admittance, however subconsciously, that she needed help. However, Helen continued to rely on Ashley emotionally, counting on Ashley to always be there.

Helen’s emotional reliance on Ashley is perhaps the reason we’re given a stronger Helen in “Requiem.” Helen is, of course, scared, and she and Will get on each other’s nerves, but there isn’t that sense of vulnerability in Helen that is clearly visible in “Next Tuesday.” In “Requiem,” Helen is strong, confident, she knows what she has to do; but in “Next Tuesday” Helen isn’t as put together. There’s clearly something else going on with her that the viewer isn’t aware of.

Sanctuary-S2x08-Next-Tuesday-19Will’s position has also significantly shifted between “Requiem” and “Next Tuesday.” In “Requiem” Will was more naive; he was still learning. Now Will is more settled both in his job and in his relationship with Helen. There’s still that definite boundary between them since Helen is his boss, but he’s more open with her and more willing to push her buttons. His constant whining about the conference definitely pushed on Helen’s nerves and we saw it in her reactions to him. We see Will starting to treat Helen more as an equal instead of putting her on that pedestal we saw in Season One. He still asks questions and values her guidance, but just as she is opening up to him more, he’s doing the same with her.

Still, even with tensions running high viewers can see the partnership Helen and Will have developed. This partnership was solidified in “Requiem” when they worked together to figure a way out of that situation, even if it was devastating for Will and painful for Helen. Now that they have had more experience working together, they seem to anticipate each other more and the partnership has become almost second nature.

"Requiem" copyright SyFy, NBC UniversalIt is apparent however, that Will is more comfortable with their friendship than Helen. This is not to say that Helen values his friendship any less. Helen is simply still more reserved when it comes to showing Will her vulnerable side. Now the argument could be made that viewers saw plenty of vulnerability in Helen during “Veritas,” but here’s the difference. In “Veritas” Helen’s manic state was due to the bug at the base of her skull. She wasn’t herself. Even if she were, she had planned the entire situation. Her vulnerability was a rouse. Her vulnerability in “Next Tuesday” was very real and much more personal.

We learn at the end of “Next Tuesday” that Tuesday would have been Ashley’s birthday. The reason behind Helen’s order for Will not to attend the conference was because she didn’t want to be alone. While the other members of the Sanctuary may be close friends with Helen, it seems to be Will that really understands her, can sympathize with her and give her strength. Even if the other members were present, Helen likely would have wanted Will to stay. The fact that the others were all away made the occasion more poignant for Helen.

So why would Helen cover up her real reason for wanting Will to stay? The answer is simple, vulnerability. To someone like Helen, asking Will to give up something as important as the conference so he could stay with her on Ashley’s birthday seems trivial on the surface. Emotionally, being alone on her daughter’s birthday would have been devastating. Helen’s excuse was that she didn’t know how to ask him. It’s an honest reason given the situation. To Helen, Sanctuary-S2x08-Next-Tuesday-31asking Will to give up the conference because of that would have sounded silly. At the same time, she knew she couldn’t bear to be alone so she ordered him to stay.

Like in the end of “Requiem,” we see Helen and Will reach a deeper level of understanding between them. Helen’s admission of the real reason she wanted Will to stay solidifies their relationship on a new emotional level. Her final admittance shows her trust in Will and her ability to perhaps open up to him a little bit more. While to Will it caused a realization that Helen is indeed human, capable of being vulnerable and that she will, if given time and the right conditions, open up to him.

"Requiem" copyright SyFy, NBC UniversalMartin Wood may like to throw Helen and Will into these impossible miserable situations but it’s through these situations that he knows the characters will grow. Emotional growth between two characters is hard in the normal parameters of an episode. Pulling the characters out of their elements and putting them in a situation where they have to rely on each other is an excellent way to allow the viewers more insight into the characters and their relationships.

Sanctuary-S2x08-Next-Tuesday-42Like “Requiem,” “Next Tuesday” gave the relationship between Helen and Will a chance to grow. Whether that relationship eventually grows from friendship into something else we don’t know. But it’s clear that the bond between Helen and Will is very strong and despite whatever they may go through, individually or together, they know they can always rely on each other to get through anything.

  • Comic-Con 2009 Sanctuary Panel with Amanda Tapping, Robin Dunne, Damian Kindler, and Martin Wood!

    Howdy everybody!

I was lucky enough to attend this year’s Comic-Con 2009 and be at the Sanctuary panel!  I got up a little late the morning of this panel and was rushing trying to get ready and get to the line so thaComic-Con-2010t I could get a good seat. And oh yes, we will be at Comic-Con 2010!

By the time I got there, I was literally the 6th to last person isyfy-logo11n line when they started allowing people into the ballroom that the panel was in.  I was so disappointed!  I thought I’d NEVER get a good seat!  Luck was on my side though, folks!  Being the only one in my group who wanted to attend the Sanctuary panel, I only needed to find one teeny tiny little seat.  Instead of just resigning myself to sitting in the last row, I walked up to the very front and scanned the crowd.  Low and behold, there was one empty seat, the second row back, right between the two nicest ladies!  I asked politely if the seat was taken and they said that it wasn’t!  They told me that they had just kicked someone out of that seat because the guy had just walked up and sat down without even asking if it was taken.  Then they thanked me for asking first before just claiming that seat as my own.  See people?  Politeness pays off!  😀

NBC-ComCast-01cAnyway, while I was sitting there, chatting with the people around me, the guy sitting right in front of me apparently heard me geeking out about being so close and since he was leaving before Sanctuary started he offered me his seat when he left.  In the FRONT ROW!  So I ended up sitting front and (just a littlNBC-01c2e to the right of) center, but front row nonetheless.  And I was allowed to record the entire panel, except for the previews for season 2 that they showed, for your viewing pleasure!  Sorry for the shakes!  I didn’t have a tripod…

All our thanks to the fine staff at NBC Universal and SyFy in New York City at for their support and the excellent Sanctuary video embed to compliment our Comic-Con panel video! Thank you! Here they are. Enjoy!Click to visit MeaganSue on Twitter!
