  • End of an Era in Vancouver? No Way! GateCon 2010 Concludes With a KA-Whoosh!

    Hello GateCon Fans!

End of an era - GateCon 2010!

    Gatecon 2010 Signing the Stargate!
First up on stage was Stargate Atlantis’ Dr. Beckett, Mr. Paul McGillion.  I decided to get the preliminaries out of the way, by yelling, “Are you married yet?” He smiled and replied that the wedding is in September, “if she will still have me.” Apparently, the bachelor party had already been taken care of. Good old Paul had been run through the mill with several sporting events which had left him with bruised ribs. Now there’s a man who really wants to get married.

When asked what Paul’s favourite episode was, he mentioned that the pilot was pretty cool. He enjoyed the interaction his character had with Joe Flanigan’s character at the ancient chair. But if he had to name a great episode for him, it was, “Poisoning The Well”, an episode in the first season.  “Martin Wood directed it,” Paul added, “when you get a chance, talk to Damian Kindler who wrote it. We talked about the retrovirus, then, we talked about my Scottish accent. It was the first time I got to use my acting chops and the first episode when I wasn’t a recurring character”.

Gatecon 2010 JR Bourne, Steve, Paul, John de Lancie

Paul said that his favourite movie is Avatar. He saw it in London in 3D. He also spoke about an incident he remembered working with Gary Jones, who played Walter Harriman. Gary was sitting in his usual spot as the gate technician. The scene was running long, and he was falling asleep. Then there is a “ping, ping” noise on the glass of the control room. The noise wakes him up. It’s the director, a big guy named Mario, tossing pennies at the glass.

Paul was also asked about how hard it is to be a doctor on Atlantis. “Very hard,” Paul said, “but being a medical doctor in real life is the hardest. I was okay. Lots of people come up to me and cure things. And I do. I cure everything.” Paul’s remark was followed by laughter from the audience. Peter Flemming, who had played Agent Barrett came into the room and stood at the door to listen. Paul noticed him, then stated, “You’re wearing the same blue shirt as yesterday.” Peter countered, “I got ketchup on my shirt at 3:00AM so I had to wear this one”, to which Paul stated, “No, it’s because you’re hung over.”

Gatecon 2010 Gary Chalk the legendary Col Checkov!

Later in the day, Garry Chalk (Col. Chekov), Peter Flemming, Dylan Neal and Andee Frizzel were asked what else they wanted to do for a career choice. Garry stated that he was a bouncer at the Biltmore when he was much younger, but he wanted to be an English Literature teacher. Peter Flemming said that he was unemployed and living at home until he was 25, when his mother kicked him out of the house.

He saw Tom Cruise and decided that he wanted to act for a career. “I was scared as hell when I started,” he said. Dylan Neil began as a furniture builder and illustrator. He not only decided to become an actor, he said, he also married one. He said his wife is currently writing a script and he will be producing it. “We live a gypsy life as actors”, Dylan added. “Any freelance artist is taking an incredible gamble with their lives – they are the most courageous people you’ll ever meet”.

Andee Frizell said that she became an actor because she wanted people to pay attention to her. She taught English in orphanages in South America for a while, but her real passion has always been acting, and yoga. 0_11-Gatecon Erick Avari shares how he joined Stargate!

After a break, Erick Avari, Dan Payne, Jeremy Rector, and Steve Bacic were asked, what are you doing now?  Erick said he is working on a documentary. Dan Payne is keeping busy looking after his 18 month old son. He can already do a, “one timer in hockey”. I was not sure what that meant, so I asked him later. Dan told me, “it’s when a player receives a teammate’s pass then fires an immediate slapshot toward the net”. Look out Sydney Crosby.

Dan Payne (pictured below) also just finished working on a movie of the week with Faye Dunaway. Jeremy Rector is concentrating on his four month girlfriend. He was quick to add that his girlfriend isn’t four months old, the relationship is four months old. He also did an episode of Eureka. Steve Bacic was involved in the last half of the season of “Big Love”. He said, “they don’t give me scripts; they give me scenes, so I go onto set not knowing what is going on, which is normal for me.”

    GateCon 2010 - Dean Aylesworth

A question was asked about what the actors thought when they got their Stargate role. Did they know that the show would be big? Cliff Simon answered first, “I read for a special character, but it was in the future. I didn’t know from week to week when I’d be working next. It’s up to the fans if they like the character. Cliff Simon stated “I was fortunate that Ba’al was popular.” J.R. Bourne stated that he had read for an evil Tok’ra, but got Martouf. Dean Ayelsworth (pictured above) ended up with an established character, Anubis. He said he didn’t know anything about the character because he was only familiar with the movie.

Erick Avari was auditioning for Kasouf in the MGM Stargate movie. “My character only had a couple of lines. I was told most of Click to visit MGM Dot Com!it would be improve. I was first in to read after lunch. The casting director was eating a candy bar. I watched him eat until he became self conscious and he offered me a piece. I acted as I did in the movie, and that’s how I got the part.” Steve Bacic answered the question with the shortest response by saying, “I can’t remember how I got my role.”

During the convention, the actors spent most of their time either visiting with their fans, signing autographs, or hanging out with each other. Cliff Simon did some sight-seeing. He told me that he and his wife took a plane ride along the Queen Charlotte Islands. They were looking for whales, but didn’t see any. Several other actors like Dean Ayelsworth, Peter Flemming, Gary Chalk and Erick Avari had lunch or dinner with the fans, enjoying the opportunity to get to know them better.

Gatecon 2010 Colin Cunningham kicks back!

Most of the actors like Colin Cunningham and Dan Payne (pictured above) made themselves available to the fans as much as possible and really seemed to enjoy themselves. Gatecon is very relaxed and lots of fun for both the fans and the actors. Although this Gatecon was promoted to be the last one, everyone had such a good time that the organizers were asked many times to continue to bring Gatecon back. MinCon Creation Stargate 2010 Minnesota

    Hey Stargate Convention Fans!

Excited didn’t begin to describe how I felt when I first heard about Creation Entertainment’s Stargate Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota. All images here are courtesy of Creation Entertainment with special thanks to Monica and her staff in Minneapolis for their help and support!

Oh and I called the convention “MinCon” on Twitter to make it easier to find all the related tweets. You can search for the convention tweets using the hash tag #MinCon!

Click to visit Stargate 2010 Minnesota!Welcome to Stargate Minneapolis 2010!

As a squirrel (a fan of David Hewlett), any convention that has David Hewlett is one I want to attend. MinCon not only has Mr. Hewlett, Stargate Atlantis’ Rodney McKay, but also his co-star, Joe Flanigan, who played Colonel Sheppard. Creation Entertainment also arranged for appearances Click to visit Stargate Universe on MGM Dot Com!by Gary Jones who started in Stargate SG-1 and has been in every series and movie as well as special guests Ms. Alaina Huffman and Mr. Brian J. Smith of MGM’s hit series Stargate Universe distributed inCliock to visit SGU on SyFy! the United States by SyFy.

The only guests I’d never met before were Ms. Huffman and Mr. Smith. I always wonder how an actor is compared to the characters they play. Would Ms. Huffman be as reserved as T.J.? Would Mr. Smith be anything like his character Scott? I’d find out at their panels.

I checked in at registration with my husband around noon. It went fairly quickly. After my husband and I picked up our gold passes we decided to head out for lunch. The convention is being held at the Marriott Minneapolis City Center. I have to say it’s an unbelievably convenient location.

    MinCons Marriott Minneapolis City Center

If you ever cared to explore Minneapolis, and I suggest you do, this is a great place to do it from. The Hard Rock Café and Target Center are both within walking distance. We walked around Nicolett Mall and dozens of great restaurants and of course stopped at my favorite place, Starbucks, which is just around the corner from the hotel.

Whovian99 - Trish in Minneapolis for MinCon

After a little more sightseeing we went back to the hotel to check out the vendors room before Gary Jones’ panel. Mr. Jones’ panel was, as always, hilarious. When he came on stage he hammed it up for the Wormholeriders’ camera. Check out the pretty poses he gave us.

The Legend Gary Jones at MinCon!

Gary Jones poses for fans of WormholeRiders!

How can you not laugh when this guy is in the room? Mr. Jones talked about what it was like playing “the Chevron guy” on Stargate SG-1. Practically every story he tells is funny. He said one time he was leaning on a wall in the Stargate Command Center and a big metal bolt fell off the wall. As it turns out it wasn’t an actual metal bolt; it was made out of styrofoam. Mr. Jones said it was amusing to watch as they glued the bolt back on the wall!

Gary Jones the Stargate Legend at MinCon!

Another funny story was about Mr. Jones firing a machine gun for the first time. He said that naturally he was excited about this. He got to wear the ear protection and basically go to town shooting at things. Mr. Jones said, “There is no finesse to firing a machine gun.” He thought this was great fun, until he realized he’d have to do the scene without ear protection. Then it seemed to be less fun to Gary. In the end he was given little tiny ear plugs to wear. He said he wanted the ear muffs he’d first been given and joked at how funny it would be to have done the actual scene wearing them.

Gary Jones shares stories of Stargate at MinCon!

After the Gary Jones panel there was a short break. I was able to relax a bit in my room. Then I headed back down for the Alaina Huffman panel.

The Lovely Alaina Huffman of SGU at MinCon!

When Ms. Huffman came out onto stage I was struck by how tall she is — not to mention beautiful. It’s no surprise she has done modeling. She is very sweet and has a great presence. She looked at the fans… we looked at her… and I thought “Hmmm… awkward silence is… awkward.” Ms. Huffman then laughed and explained this was her first solo panel. She did very well for her first time on a panel alone.

Talented Alaina Huffman of Stargate Universe at MinCon!

And to answer my question, no, Ms. Huffman is not at all reserved like her character T.J. on Stargate Universe. In fact, she reminds me a little bit of the bubbly and fun Amanda Tapping. However she was really pregnant like T.J. She had a baby girl, Charlie, in December making three kids total.

Alaina Huffman delights the SGU fans at MinCon!

When asked by a fan what her favorite Stargate Universe episode is, Ms. Huffman didn’t hesitate in saying “Time”. She talked about her experience on Pain Killer Jane and growing up in Ontario. Then she was joined on stage by Brian Jacob Smith.

A champagne toast to SGU at MinCon 2010!

As a surprise Creation Entertainment had champagne (and sparkling cider) for everyone to toast to season two of Stargate Universe. A funny moment was when Mr. Smith announced that champagne and gum don’t go well together.

    Chad from Gateworld helps Brian!

Chad, of Gateworld and the host for this event, walked over and held out his hand for Mr. Smith to give him his gum. And yes, he did. Chad then led us in a toast to Stargate Universe!

Brian & Alaina Toast to Stargate Universe at MinCon!

Mr. Smith and Ms. Huffman took questions from the fans. They talked about how funny Lou Diamond Phillips, Peter Kelamis and Louis Ferreria are on set. “We are thoroughly entertained,” said Ms. Huffman. When someone asked for clarification about Lou Diamond Phillips she added, “He can do Beyonce like nobody’s business.” Oh to be a fly on the wall on the set of Stargate Universe.

Alaina and Brian of teh Stargate Universe Family!

Alaina Huffman & Brian J. Smith of SGU enjoy MinCon!

Ms. Huffman’s time was up and we had Mr. Smith all to ourselves. A fan asked about how the actors pretend to be scared. Mr. Smith said, “I imagine Robert Carlyle is mad at me.” A follow up question asked: Is Scott scared of Commander Keva? Mr. Smith said he thinks Scott is terrified of her.

Brian J. Smith of Stargate Universe at MinCon!

The very handsome Brian J. Smith at MinCon!

Anyone who follows Mr. Smith on Twitter knows about his dog, Cassie. When asked how she was doing he said Cassie is thinking about having her own Twitter account. In my opinion, if Joe Mallozzi’s dogs can have a Twitter account, then why not Cassie? I’d follow her!

Brian J. Smith up close and personal at MinCon!

After Mr. Smith’s panel was a costume contest. The winner was an Ori Prior (from seasons nine and ten of Stargate SG-1). The runners up were Jack O’Neill on vacation (my favorite because HELLO, that’s exactly something Jack would do) and John Sheppard. The only junior entrant was the prettiest little Teyla I’ve ever seen… Look out Rachel Luttrell.

Great costumes at Stargate MinCon 2010!

Gary Jones, Brian Jacob Smith and Alaina Huffman signed autographs after the costume contest. What I loved was how Ms. Huffman really turned on the charm when she realized we were taking her picture. Again she reminded me of Amanda Tapping. Her fun spirit is highly contagious.

The infectious smile of Alaina Huffman at MinCon!

Then it was dinner time. My husband and I walked to a sushi place nearby. But I couldn’t really concentrate on the food. I was thinking about the Dessert Party for Gold members. Creation Entertainment had said there would be a special surprise for us and I was trying to figure out what that may be.

Whovian99 at "auto" table with Brian J. Smith!

When we walked into the room where the dessert party was being held, my husband sniffed out the surprise fairly quickly: XB0X 360’s Rock Band 2! Of course I wondered if the guests would play with us but I wasn’t going to get my hopes up. Besides, I’ve played Rock Band once in my life and that didn’t go very well.

Whovian99 with dessert treats at MinCon 2010!

We picked out our desserts. I had a gorgeous chocolate covered strawberry with white and dark chocolate and gold dust, some sore of apple tart that was very tasty and ice cream just about any way you could want it. I put caramel and whipped cream on mine.

Brian, Alaina and Gary ready to ROCK at #MinCon!

When the stars came in we were allowed some photos. Then the guests took turns sitting at our tables. We had a nice talk with Gary Jones. He’s always fun to have around. Then Alaina Huffman sat with us. She and I actually have a lot in common. She loves Target and Starbucks like I do and, being the mother of three children and living with her husband and brother-in-law she does a lot of laundry.

Click to visit David Hewlett's DGeek Forum!

Those who know me on Twitter and on David Hewlett’s site DGeek Dot Com know that I do a little bit of laundry too. Then Brian Jacob Smith sat with us. We talked about BattleStar Galactica and dogs, among other things. Cassie, Mr. Smith’s dog, is absolutely adorable. He showed us a picture of her on his phone. Too soon it was time for Mr. Smith to move on to the next table.

Rockin Rockstars at Stargate MinCon 2010!

Then, Rock Band time! Can I just say: Duuuuuuuuude! Gary Jones watched while Ms. Huffman and Mr. Smith played. I’m not sure who was playing bass or guitar. I think Mr. Smith was on drums and someone was singing. All I know is they were booed by the game. Brutal. Then they changed the difficulty to easy. They totally rocked the next song, Survivor’s Eye of the Tiger. I sat watching them and being glad I wasn’t up there. After a couple songs someone twisted my arm and I decided to give it a try. To my surprise Mr. Smith came up to me and suggested I play bass, he’d play guitar. Someone picked Duran Duran’s Hungry Like the Wolf. I was clueless. I think I scored a 52%. Which was even more pitiful compared to Mr. Smith’s 99%.

Geeks Jammin with Brian J. Smith and Whovian99!

However this was all in good fun. We were just trying to jam as only geeks can. Mr. Smith picked Kansas’ Carry On Wayward Son. In a word: epic. We actually failed the first time but Mr. Smith said we had to try again. The rest of us agreed so again we played it and TOTALLY ROCKED! I high fived Mr. Smith. My score: 88% thank you. Again I think Mr. Smith had a 99%. Deciding to end on a high note, I quit the band. It was almost midnight and I needed to get some sleep to gear up for tomorrow. After all, a squirrel needs all the energy she can get when she’s going to be seeing the Squirrel King, aka David Hewlett.Click to visit Whovian99 (Trish) on Twitter!

  • Walter Harriman Engages Chevrons and SGU SG1 SGA Fans at Los Angeles Stargate

Hey Stargate Fans,Click to visit Creation Entertainment

What can we say except all our gratitude to Gary Jones, Creation Click to visit Stargate on MGM-Dot Com!Entertainment,  MGM and Stargate creators for Chief Master Sergeant Walter Harriman! Airman Harriman! Airman! Sergeant Davis and acclaimed Starhole star. Here was the man who made the chevrons light up! LIVE at the Los Angeles Stargate 2009 convention! Gary Jones, the man who activated then lived to tell about the fabled seventh chevron and beyond. Even with the ninth chevron activated in Stargate Universe, Gary Jones performance Saturday November 7, 2009 is testimony to why he remains a Stargate legend to this very day!

LA Stargate 2009 - Gary Jones, Walter Harriman. Courtesy SciFiFanGirl616

Well folks it is all true, Gary’s appearance at the Stargate convention Los Angeles in November 2009 was all that and more! Included is a news clip that highlights the fun we had as Gary Jones re-enacted his beloved role of Chief Master Sergeant Walter Harriman! For the uninitiated, the news video is a two and 1/2 minute education of what Stargate is all about. Fans of Stargate, either at the convention or not, surely understand CMS Walter Harriman!

Of all the characters in Stargate, Gary’s portrayal of the person who finally became Chief Master Sergeant Walter Harriman ranks high in the minds of fans and this author for his enduring role in the Stargate franchise. Dating back to the earliest episodes when he was referred to as just ‘Airman’ by General Hammond, it was then Gary shared that he began his quest for a name to his character (although that never officially took shape for many years to come). 2009 - LA Stargate Gary Jones - Walter Harriman -02 As one of the longest lived non main characters of the Stargate series, his staid and steady performances spanned the entire Stargate series and the movies too. For me Stargate was not quite Stargate unless Walter was at the dialing computer! Although it took many years, who can forget the Stargate SG-1 episode ‘2010’ when we heard General O’Neill, Richard Dean Anderson, first utter the proper name of Walter? How many times did we hear Gary state “Chevron Seven Locked”? According to a variety of sources, Gary stated the fateful words at least 100 times over the course of the Stargate franchise history. 2009 - LA Stargate Gary Jones - Walter Harriman -03Where would we be without these fateful words ‘Chevron 7 Locked!'? Nowhere that’s where! That’s right fans, without Chief Master Sergeant (CMS) Walter Harriman we might never have gone anywhere. It was Walter who knew the seventh chevron must be "locked" to engage the Stargate and Gary  had helped make it all happen. CMS Walter Harriman, aka Gary Jones entered the Creation Entertainment stage at the LAX Marriott and immediately mused that the audience looked like we were sitting in a game of musical chairs or bingo seats! The audience warmed up to Gary right away as many in the audience recalled from the evening before when Gary Jones and Dean Haglund had appeared in the Creation Entertainment Starhole Improvisation Theatre at the convention. Gary commented on how much fun it was for him. He stated that really liked the special sound effects that all sounded like a screaming cat! The audience who were present the evening before roared with laughter at the fond memories of the Starhole Improvisation Theatre originally started years before by Gary and Dean at a convention in Germany known as FedCon. He and Dean Haglund had carried on the show all through 2009 at each Creation Entertainment convention in Vancouver, Chicago and here in Los Angeles. We hope to see more of Gary, Dean and Starhole in the future. Many stars (in fact most people) sometimes have uncomfortable first moments on a stage. Not Gary Jones. His personality literally bubbles forth in such a humorous manner he quickly endeavors to put the audience at ease. It was a delight to observe his easy style before the fans of Stargate. From his deportment and presentation, it was clear Gary was a veteran of convention appearances and knew the ‘workings’ of an audience for maximum enjoyment for all present during his panel appearance. The next sequence that Gary related reminded me of a time I had purchas2009 - LA Stargate Gary Jones - Walter Harriman -04ed a battery powered drill while out of town in Austin Texas. I too had left a suspect item in my carry on baggage only to be confronted by overwrought security guards. Gary shared his own adventure about the time he was going home from a convention. “I was going through security at the airport and I had purchased something for a friends young boy. I had left the toy in my carry on suitcase. The security guard was sitting there, and I placed the carry on bag to go through the scanner. Suddenly the security guard jumped up! The guard scanned the bag several times back and forth (on the conveyor belt). All of a sudden the security guard called a supervisor over. I noticed that they had a hushed conversation.” Gary Jones continues: “Next thing I knew the airport security staff supervisor comes over to me and says “Sir is this yours (referring to the bag)? Would you mind opening it for me?” So I opened up the bag , and the toy is on the top of the items of clothing!” The supervisor asks “Excuse me sir what is that (pointing to what appears to be a weapon)?” Gary Jones: ”I responded respectfully 'That is a Star Trek toy. It's a Phaser'.” The security supervisor immediately looked over to the guard who called him and said “I am going to kick his butt”. The audience immediately broke up in laughter Gary on a roll continued: “Is everyone here was from Los Angeles? A few in the crowd nodded, including one fellow who said it only took him five minutes to get to the Creation Entertainment Stargate convention. Gary immediately ad-libbed and responded “Oh you live at the Hilton Hotel? Very nice!” Gary Continued: “You’re in the penthouse suite, but you could not get a front row seat?” Another fan said they were from Australia. Gary Jones: “That does not count!” The crowd burst into laughter and Gary had succeeded in breaking the ice with the convention attendees. Gary then engaged another Australian fan asking where they were both from. Gary asked both if they knew where the other person was from? The fans responded in a humorous fashion. Both said yes. One indicated the other was south and the other fan said she was north! Gary continued to heckle the audience as he searched for another audience member to “target”! It did not take him long. It quickly became obvious Gary was a professional in all aspects of interacting with his fans! Gary picked out a poor unsuspecting fan: “Sir are you pissed off? You have yours arms folded, or that is your normal look?” 2009 - LA Stargate Gary Jones - Walter Harriman -05Gary then inquired as to what the fan what he did (for a living) and then drove home the good natured banter with him: "Yes (pointing) you sir, I am not talking to the lady six rows behind you!” The audience was warming up to Gary quickly as many chuckled in their seats. The poor fan answered something “Fire Alarms Installer”, but I did not catch the entire response, Gary quickly quipped: “If you’re going to talk to me don’t use that accent. That’s why your wife is here isn’t it, she translates for you?” The crowd roared with laughter. Gary then teased the fan about his pronunciation of the Fire Alarm installer came out as Fiirre Alllarm IIIIInstaller”. “Oh you didn’t feel like putting your hand up when I asked where everyone was from? The fan, in good humor, then told Gary he was from England. Gary moved on from the good natured fan to tell us about the Saturday Creation Entertainment breakfast and that he met many people. Gary went on to mention that he had missed the Karaoke being busy with Starhole and that he did not even know that there was one! Only a few minutes into his stage appearance, the Los Angeles convention fans began to migrate to the microphones to ask questions. Naturally the first question had to do with how Gary finally got his name ‘Walter Harriman’ on Stargate SG-1. Having read many interviews on this subject, I expected the story to be essentiality the same. What I did not expect was the animated nature in which Gary related the now legendary tale of how his character evolved over the many years of Stargate. 2009 - LA Stargate Gary Jones - Walter Harriman -06 Gary Jones: “It was completely at the whim of the producers of the show. My character went through so many changes over the 10 years that I became a completely different ‘person’ from the original who started out as a technician, Norman Davis in the script.” “But here is what Stargate fans need to know. I was never referred to as Sergeant Davis in the early shows. My character was always referred to as ‘technician’ or even ‘hey you’ especially when Don Davis used to say “Open the iris”.” Gary digressed for a moment: “Don Davis was the best!” Lost City Beloved Don S. Davis as General George Hammond The audience went silent and also observed a brief moment of silence for the now deceased Don S. Davis, the much loved George Hammond of Texas and always remembered as the “General” of Stargate! (more…)

The driving time from the Marriott hotel at LAX to Temple City was approximately 80 minutes in each direction.  Normally I would stay at the hotel, but as such my convention days were extremely long. No complaint, just the facts Maam, to borrow a phrase from Die Hard 2!

Driving back ‘home’ my thoughts were filled of Cliff Simon and Ryan Robbins and thLA-Farscape2009-Party-Peeps-004ceir wonderfully genuine and sincere manner. All were astounded how friendly they were and how they chatted with us and many more convention attendees to everyone’s sheer ecstacy! I arrived back in Temple City at about 2:30 AM (Yikes) to upload photos and my initial report from Friday to a horror! The local cable Internet company was having major system failures! Each time I would attempt to upload, the cable system would seize up. Fortunately, it stayed up long enough to file LA-Farscape2009-Party-Peeps-005cmy report, but with all the trouble, I finished barely in time to get in the shower  and get back for the Saturday morning the Los Angeles Stargate 2009 convention breakfast hosted by Creation Entertainment.  Translation: No sleep Friday night!

Saturday Los Angeles started with a conference call with the editors and reporters team. Naturally the excitement from the Karaoke party dominated the discussion. I mean really….. Cliff and Ryan in specific hung out with our Los Angeles team for hours! WOW! Thanks Cliff and Ryan!

After the team conference call, it was time for the SOLD OUT LA-Stargate2009-Sat-Breakfast-Peeps-001cStargate Breakfast with no less than the likes of Gary Jones and Paul McGillion! Much like past Creation Entertainment convention breakfasts the food was great and the environment of chatting with fellow fans was superb! Greater of course was the time that Gary and Paul spent visiting each table at the breakfast.  Per request from Creation Entertainment, which all honored, no photos of the stars are allowed at the breakfast tables, but the wonderful part of this sub-event is that the discussion with PaLA-Stargate2009-Sat-Breakfast-Peeps-002cul and Gary was much more like chatting with old friends. Discussion at our table centered on how they were doing in their personal lives rather than fawning over them as stars. Based on this reporters observations of the happiness and delight of the fans, it is this intimate nature of interacting with the stars as real people that makes the Creation Los Angeles Stargate 2009 breakfast a very special event!

After the breakfast was the biggest day in terms of the number of stage appearances (5), starting with the very popular Ben Browder, Lt. Colonel Cameron Mitchell!  Ben delighted the guests with stories LA-Stargate2009-BenBrowder-003of pranks and memories of his time on Stargate SG-1. Ben shared with us what he is doing in his personal and professional life.  One of the most enjoyable parts of Ben’s appearance was when Farscape stars Lani Tupu, Gigi Edgley, Dean Haglund and Virginia Hey came in to ‘harass’ Ben.  It was a crackup! After each Farscape star  departed Ben orchestrated a big shout out for each of them!  We were  a bit sLA-Stargate2009-BenBrowder-LaniTupu-001cad when Ben’s time on stage was up, but we knew that Ben would be appearing with Claudia Black on Sunday at a time which did not directly conflict with other Stargate guests (Michael Shanks for one!). Ben left the stage to a roaring round of applause!

Next up at Saturday was Gary Jones, aka Chief Master Sergeant Walter Harriman! Perhaps the most beloved non main story character in Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and the Stargate movies, Gary is such an  entertaining  individual! As we mentioned, we had seen Gary in the Creation Entertainments ‘Starhole’ improv theater the night beLA-Stargate2009-GaryJones-003cfore and at breakfast, but his time on stage was nothing but fun for the fans. Walter of course shared the now famous story of how he got his characters “name” on the show. We will not repeat the story at this time, but as many know the name ‘Walter’ came from the SG-1 episode ‘2010’ when Richard Dean Anderson ad-libbed or coined Gary’s characters first name. Always a fan favorite, Gary had the crowd literally ‘in stitches’ throughout his appearance Saturday afternoon!

With so much happening on Saturday at the Los Angeles Stargate 2009 convention, the next guest was up in just a few minutes. Who LA-Stargate2009-PaulMcGillion-003cyou say?

Why of course the fruits of our labors over the years with the ‘Save Carson Beckett’ campaign, the one and only Paul McGillion! Paul is so well liked by the fandom, the din from fans clapping and hooting seemed to take several minutes to fully calm down. Not a person to stay still very long, Paul was all over the stage and was very entertaining. Of course with Paul being the first Stargate Atlantis star to appear the question and answer period had focus on the Atlantis movie, “Extinction”.   Paul shared that the Atlantis movie is ‘Green-Lit’ (approved), but is stuck (like many of us) in the throws of the current economic recession, lacking production funding. Perhaps the funniest story was of Paul’s interview / screen test for the role of LA-Stargate2009-PaulMcGillion-004cCarson Beckett. Instructed to play the role with a English accent, Paul however decided to do his native Scottish accent instead. What did TPTB say? Fine! Paul thought for sure that he would not get the role!  As we now know, his accent was the correct move and we had many years of Dr. Beckett! Paul also indicated his role would be reprised when the production funding for ‘Extinction’ is located!

The next guest Saturday (late afternoon) was the fantastic Joe Flanigan – John Sheppard or ‘Shep’.  Creation had expanded the general admission seating for Joe’s appearance. Even so the LA-Stargate2009-JoeFlanigan-004cballroom was 100% packed and completely SOLD OUT! Joe also is not one for doing much sitting in the directors chair placed on the stage! We were impressed with the warm welcome Joe received.  This fact was quite evident during the question and answer period when the lines at both microphones on opposite sides of the room were literally backed up all the way to the exit doors! We had a few questions for Joe that fans had sent to us, but with the taking of dozens of Joe’s pictures (for our fan news coverage), by the time I got in line, it was too late! Jumping ahead to the autograph opportunity with Joe, I noticed that like myself, Joe enjoys a little Single Malt Scotch! I was tempted to pull out my Creation Entertainment Stargate Universe shot glass and enjoy a little Scotch ‘neat’ with Joe, but I knew that would have to wait LA-Stargate2009-JoeFlanigan-005cfor another event currently in the planning stage!

Per our normal convention reporting procedures, we will have a detailed report on Joe and all the stars who appeared at the Los Angeles Stargate 2009 convention coming in the future! Suffice it to ay that the crowd was enchanted with Joe Flanigan. We look forward to seeing more of Joe as John Sheppard in Stargate Extinction!

Last up, but perhaps the most important Creation Entertainment LA-Stargate2009-MartinGero-002cguest in the opinion of this reporter was one of TPTB, Mr. Martin Gero, producer of Stargate Atlantis and writer consulting producer of Stargate Universe.

What was surprising about Martin’s appearance was that he played to only a 50% full house! In talking with a number of fans about Stargate Atlantis, it was clear that many fans never forgave Martin for killing off Carson Beckett nor the ultimate cancelation of SGA (which he was not ultimately responsible for).  I then tried to explain to some the business aspects of the situation. Also that the Save Carson Beckett campaign was partly responsible for bringing together many of them whom otherwise would not have ever met! Many of whom we know became good friends as a result. Most I talked with understood the business aspects and agreed, but not all. Because of the smaller number of fans present for Mr. Gero, I was able to ask several questions about Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe. I had wanteLA-Stargate2009-MartinGero-003cd to comment that SGU is much like a four act play with only the first act completed, but time ran out for a third round of questions.  Martin shared many thoughts about SGU which confirmed that SGU would be much more like the Stargate fans have loved for the past since the movie and the 12 years since Stargate SG-1 first premiered on Showtime in 1997.  For Atlantis and SG-1 fans this was welcome news!

We will have much more on Martin Gero’s  surprise appearance at Creation Entertainments Los Angeles Stargate 2009 in the future. LA-Stargate2009-MartinGero-001c However, since his appearance was a surprise announced just prior to the convention, there were no photos to purchase for Martin to sign! Luckily we had our SyFy Stargate Universe Press Kit with us (to watch SGU when not busy – right …like that happened and we had time to watch our DVD’s)! During the several minutes we had with Martin at his autograph table, Mr. Gero signed our SGU Press Kit! Now we only have the entire TPTB and the entire cast signatures to go!  Finally, in chatting with Martin at the autograph table, I mentioned my analogy that SGU had just finished the ‘first act of a four act play’. He agreed that that was a fitting description. I enjoyed meeting Mr. Gero and look forward to his contributions as consulting producer and scriptwriter for Stargate Universe. Thanks Martin!

After the stage appearances  came the autographs with the days stars Joe, Gary, Paul and as mentioned one of TPTLA-Stargate2009-MartinGero-WR_Systems-001B, Martin Gero. One thing I was grateful for was being a Gold Pass Creation Entertainment Member! Having a “B” row seat allowed me to get the autographs and still have plenty of time to chat with the WormholeRiders reporting team and with other Farscape and Stargate fans in the lounge areas.

At this point, I had a couple of hours until the Saturday Night Dessert Party and I took a nap (much needed). I know this, I will be staying AT the hotels from now on. Losing almost 3 hours a day commuting to and from the convention is not recommended!

When I awoke from mLA-Farscape2009-Party-Peeps-006cy nap, dazed, confused and excited (to be quite frank),  I changed into my evening outfit and went  to the cocktail dessert party. As you can see many were dressed in costume! The place was already packed. Our two Farscape reporters MeaganSue and ValaBlack where upstairs in the hotel lobby eating pizza and mingling with a number of Farscape Fans from Terra Firma and our friends at Claudia Black On-Line. I was introduced to many peoples I had only heard of on-line and it was very pleasant to meet the faces behind the LA-FarscapeStargate2009-Party-Peeps-007cnames.

At the Creation Entertainment Dessert Party, the number and types of delectable petit-fours, ice creams and chocolates quickly went into my gullet and I was suddenly re-energized  with a sugar rush I had not experienced in a very long time! There ought to be a law against sugar!  Just teasing. The Los Angeles Stargate Farscape Dessert Party featured appearances primarily from Farscape including Gigi Edgley, Jonathan Hardy, Paul LA-FarscapeStargate2009-Party-Peeps-008cGoddard, Lani Tupu, Wayne Pygram, and Rebecca Riggs. The only Stargate star at the dessert party was Gary Jones.

After about an hour at the party, at 11:30 PM I felt I must leave to get some sleep having gone without for nearly 44 hours! I headed to the car and realized it was unsafe for me to drive. Not because of drinking, I did not have any alcohol Saturday night. No, it was from sheer exhaustion from all the fun provided by Creation Entertainment and lack of sleep!  I decided to close my eyes for a short nap. I woke up nearly 5 hours later at a little after 4:00 AM Sunday in the car! Yikes!

I then drove ‘home’, took a shower, changed clothes and immediately drove back to the convention. I was actually early for Sunday Los Angeles Stargate Farscape 2009 breakfast! What fun that was! I will start my next report at the Sunday breakfast.

  • Stargate Farscape 2009: Hanging with Abnormals and the Goa’uld!

2009 - Creation Stargate Los Angeles banner

    Hey Stargate and Farscape Fans!

Day one of the Creation Entertainment Los Angeles Stargate and Farscape convention has come to a roaring close! Held at the Marriot Hotel and ConvenLAX-Marriot-01ction Center a hop, skip and a jump from LAX, and based on our observations and discussions with fans, a truly wonderful time was experienced by all, including this reporter!

A companion Day One Farscape convention report has been being prepared and are now in final proof. Fargate publication is just around the corner , so come back soon!

However, prior to reviewing the first day of Los Angeles Stargate, MeaganSue-ValaBlack-Friend-01this reporter would like to extend a hearty well done and bravo to ValaBlack and MeaganSue, our newest reporters from Canada and Arizona for their professional deportment and presentation at Los Angeles Farscape Stargate Convention! Many thanks to MeaganSue and ValaBlack (pictured with friend from France!)

Oh, and did I forget to mention…. that all of us had nothing but absolute fun on the first day of the convention? Well, if I did, please let me correct that impression immediately!

LA-Con-Guests-01cAs we have reported many times in the past, the “fun” we experienced is thanks to (once again) the fantastic efforts of the team of dedicated professionals at Creation Entertainment!

Creation who you ask? Well, we will answer that question, but we must share with you that if you do not know who the dickens Creation Entertainment is, we respectfully and sincerely suggest that perhaps you may clicked the wrong link and you should go back to Farscape-marque-01whatever pitiful planet you came from that is devoid of the wonderful Stargate and Farscape conventions hosted by Creation Entertainment! Let me get that gate address for you!

Seriously folks, as all Stargate, Farscape and so many other fandoms know, Creation Entertainment is the provider of excellence when it comes to providing an outstandingly intimate experience for the fans! As you know, we have reported  from the larger events of the likes of Comic-Con’s Alternative Press Exposition in San Francisco, had staff at San Diego (stand-by a news surprise coming soon for you), and of course our extensive coverage of Dragon*Con 2009 held in Atlanta Georgia earlier this year. Now do not get us wrong, these larger events are fun and exciting too. We like all the fans whom attend, love these larger events. But they are a different animal that Creation Entertainment Conventions!

Stargate-Party-Marque-02cIt is simply this fact: Creation Entertainment provides such a unique intimate experience that is very rarely duplicated in the science fiction convention area anywhere in the world! If you have never attended a Creation event, this reporter suggests that it is something every science fiction fan should experience at least once in their lifetime!

We cannot possibly thank every person individually from Creation Entertainment, such would be impossible within the scope of this report. However, kudos are certainly in order for the entire Creation Team and the professional manner that our reporting team was treated! It is the genuine people of Creation that make their conventions something special! People like Gary, Monica, Valerie, Stephanie,  and so many others, we not only thank you, we have nothing but praise for the quality of what we experienced in Los Angeles today! Great job Creation!

As we think back over the nature of today’s Stargate Los Angeles event, today was indeed “So LA and so intimate” with ‘local’ talent (Cliff Simon) and a neighbor to the north Canada with the likes of no less than Ryan Robbins of Stargate Atlantis and Sanctuary! We will publish our detail report on these two fine actors after the convention per our normal process, but the time invested with these two stars was well spent and most enjoyable!

First up after registration and check-in was Ryan Robbins! And yes ladies we caRyanRobbins-01cn confirm that a shrewd fan asking about Ryan’s “jewelry” has exposed what many already new, and Ryan confirmed it himself! He does have body piercings and was kind enough to also share that it hurt like anything. Ryan also shared with us the great time he is having on Sanctuary working with Amanda Tapping. Thank you Ryan, we truly enjoyed the afternoon panel! More on Ryan Robbins in the near future!

Next up for Stargate fans was Cliff Simon, the infamous Ba’al! And do we have news for you fans. We had the real thing, no clones! And were we happy about that. Cliff shared not only memories of CliffSimon-02cStargate, he also shared much with the fans about how he came to America from South  Africa. Unfortunately, we missed the first few minutes of this panel, but another Stargate fan was kind enough to take notes during a reporters meeting just prior to the panel! We will  have a detailed report on the wonderful Cliff Simon and the great work he does helping abused animals! Great stuff Cliff! Thank you.

While these two event were most enjoyable, Creation project management treated the fans once again to Starhole and the Karaoke Caberet as well as Fargate for the Farscape fans (more on that from ValaBlack and MeaganSue), the latter being thCliff-Simon-Ryan-Robbins-01ce best example of stars mingling with their fan as real people just like you and me.

As convention fans who attended the official Stargate convention, Gary Jones accompanied by Dean Hagland and guests recruited from the audience brought the house down with merriment and laughter.

Another sublime hi-light to close our initial review of Friday Stargate activities is the famed Creation Entertainment Karaoke Party. Held after all of the events have completed, the Creation Team, the fans, and two great people Cliff Simon and Ryan Robbins wereCliff-Simon-Meagan-01c nice enough to top by the party to the sheer delight of their fans! While mingling with the guests of the convention (that’s us by the way), Cliff and Ryan were clearly enjoying themselves! Based on how long they stayed and chatted intimately with many fans, it was clear they were having as much as the fans themselves! We were quite overjoyed and honored that both Cliff and Ryan spent a considerable period of time withCliff-Simon-ValaBlack-01c our staff. It was truly a wonderful way to end a great day! Our sincere thanks to Cliff and Ryan for being so generous, warm and friendly! YAY!

We will have much more Stargate on Gary,  Cliff and Ryan coming soon! First wCliff-Simon-WR_System-01ce need a little sleep to prepare for Stargate Saturday as Creation has nearly outdone themselves with no less that five guests scheduled including Ben Browder, Gary Jones, Paul McGillion, Joe Flanigan and special guest Martin Gero, writer, director, and Executive Producer of Stargate Atlantis as well as being a writer and consulting producer for the new Stargate Universe!

  • Dragon*Con 2009 Stargate Support Panel

It’s time for the second-smallest but completely inspired panel of the Dragon*Con weekend. Seriously, whoever thought of having a panel just for Gary Jones and Colin Cunningham, I could kiss them. It gave Colin and Gary a chance to really take center-stage, while on the bigger panels they seemed to get lost.

This panel also had a much smaller audience, mainly due to the size of the conference room it was in. This was a good thing though. It let us really interact with Colin and Gary, asking questions, shouting comments, and just getting nice and cozy. Gary and Colin were hilarious! You can tell they are good friends.

    Enjoy!
