I want to share my experience at the TCM Film Festival in Los Angeles, which took place from April 24 to April 28. This year marked my second unforgettable experience at the event, enhanced by an upgraded pass that made it even more thrilling. I was fortunate enough to book a room at the iconic Hollywood Roosevelt, a historic hotel steeped in celebrity lore, nestled right on the bustling Hollywood Boulevard. The excitement of being surrounded by the vibrant energy of the area and the allure of the hotel’s storied past made my stay truly remarkable.

This year’s festival was a remarkable celebration, marking its 16th anniversary and drawing movie enthusiasts from every corner of the globe. The enchanting theme, “Grand Illusions: Fantastic Worlds on Film,” set the stage for an immersive cinematic experience. Attendees could choose from four tiers of passes: Spotlight, Essential, Classic, and Palace, each offering access to a treasure trove of captivating films. I was thrilled to secure an Essential pass, which provided me with the exciting opportunity to attend the glamorous opening-night red-carpet screening of “The Empire Strikes Back.” This unforgettable evening was graced by a pre-movie interview featuring the legendary George Lucas, conducted by the insightful Ben Mankiewicz, making it a truly memorable night for all.

The lineup of films for this year’s event was wonderfully diverse, highlighting a vibrant array of genres that catered to every cinematic taste. I found myself grappling with the difficult task of selecting which movies to screen, as many of them overlapped in timing, with only a tight fifteen-minute window—or even less—to hustle over to the theater, check in, and join the throng of eager moviegoers lined up outside. Some films garnered a much larger following, creating a palpable buzz that pulsed through the crowd. This meant that I often had to make tough decisions to leave the captivating current screening, urged along with collective excitement, to queue up for the next blockbuster alongside a sea of enthusiastic film lovers. The charm of these festivals lies in the freedom to select films I had already experienced, allowing me to leave the theater without a pang of regret. Knowing the plot’s resolution ahead of time meant that stepping out before the credits rolled was not a loss; instead, it felt like a gentle embrace of nostalgia. I could savor the familiar emotions and vivid recollections evoked by the cinematic journey, confident that I had not missed anything significant.

During the exhilarating four-day event, I immersed myself in a total of nine films, a feat that proved to be quite a challenge this year. The lineup was a nostalgic dream, featuring many of my all-time favorite movies. The opening night was particularly fraught with tough decisions, as the majestic Grauman’s Chinese Theater buzzed with excitement for “Empire Strikes Back.” Yet, just a few blocks away, the historic Egyptian Theater was highlighting another gem—Paul Newman’s brilliant performance in “Hud,” a film that has captured my heart over the years. Driven by a fierce determination not to miss the opportunity, I reluctantly left early from the thrilling space battles of the Empire. I briskly made my way to the Egyptian, eager to experience the unforgettable storytelling of “Hud” on the big screen. Before the screening of “Hud,” the esteemed actor Keith Carradine graced the stage, sharing his profound admiration for the film. He spoke passionately about the remarkable performances delivered by Patricia Neal and Melvyn Douglas, both of whom were honored with Academy Awards for their roles. Keith also paid tribute to the legendary Paul Newman, whose charismatic presence brought unique energy to the production. He highlighted one of my favorite cinematographers, the brilliant James Wong Howe, emphasizing how his masterful black-and-white imagery infused the movie with remarkable depth and nuance, creating a visual tapestry that perfectly complemented the storytelling.

On Day 2 of the festival, I was fortunate enough to attend the Hand and Foot Ceremony for Michelle Pfeiffer. As Michelle made her entrance, accompanied by her renowned husband, David E. Kelley, the crowd buzzed with anticipation, thrilled to witness her moment of recognition immortalized in cement. Dakota Fanning and Elle Fanning, both radiant and enthusiastic, took to the stage to introduce Michelle.

They spoke with heartfelt admiration, reflecting on the memorable experiences they shared while collaborating with her, highlighting not just her talent but also her warmth and generosity. The atmosphere was filled with joy and appreciation, making the event truly special for everyone involved.

After the enchanting ceremony honoring Michelle Pfeiffer, I found myself with about an hour to indulge in some food before queuing up to see the original 1978 film “Superman,” a film starring the late, great Christopher Reeve, alongside the iconic Margot Kidder and the legendary Gene Hackman. The atmosphere in the line was electric, filled with fellow movie enthusiasts radiating excitement. There is something uniquely exhilarating about standing shoulder to shoulder with like-minded fans; the air buzzes with conversations that weave in and out like a vibrant tapestry of shared experiences and enthusiastic opinions. These exchanges not only help pass the time but also deepen the sense of anticipation as we collectively look forward to witnessing the magic of cinema unfold on the big screen.

After Superman wrapped up his exhilarating escapades, I made my way back to the cozy confines of my hotel room, eager for some much-needed nourishment and a few precious moments of respite.

The anticipation of the evening grew as I prepared to head to the vibrant pool area, where a screening of the beloved classic movie “Clueless” awaited. This is one of the many joys of attending the TCM festival.

Their superb schedule features the delightful array of the movie events it hosts, such as charming poolside movies and engaging movie panels that bring film enthusiasts together to enjoy the movies they love.

Last year, the sun-kissed surface of the pool glimmered beneath the stars during the screening of “Footloose,” and this time, with “Clueless,” I was greeted by a kaleidoscope of patrons donning costumes that brought the film’s iconic characters to life.

The atmosphere buzzed with excitement, promising an unforgettable evening under the twinkling night sky. The fantastic Elisa Donovan, who played Amber, was there to discuss making the iconic film and how, even thirty years later, the cast remains friends to this day. Elisa Donovan was openly delighted in seeing fans in costume and praised them for their attention to detail in creating their cosplay creations.

Day 3 provided me with a leisurely period, as the first film on my itinerary was not scheduled to begin until 2:45 p.m. I meandered along Hollywood Boulevard, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere and the iconic sights surrounding me. I strolled down those famous sidewalks, where countless names of legendary stars were etched into the concrete with elegance. Each step brought me closer to the rich tapestry of history, as I admired the intricate designs and the stories behind the illustrious figures immortalized beneath my feet. My first movie of the day was “Back to the Future,” which brought me back to my youth and the enthusiasm I remember from when I first saw that film on a big screen. Bob Gale, Charlie Croughwell, and Dean Cundey were the special guests who regaled us with tales of making that legendary film.

Next on my film agenda was the legendary Steven Spielberg classic “Jaws,” playing at the historic Egyptian Theater. Eagerly departing from “the future,” I rushed to join the lengthy line of fellow movie enthusiasts, my heart racing with anticipation for the thrilling experience that awaited me.

I was lucky enough to grab an aisle seat and settle in with my popcorn and drink in hand. The lovely Lorraine Gary, who portrayed Ellen Brody, was present to discuss making the film and her fondness for Robert Shaw. Her wit made the experience better as she discussed how movie making was mostly foreign to her, being a trained theater actor.

The last movie I watched that night was the legendary science fiction masterpiece “Blade Runner.” a favorite of mine and WormholeRiders News Agency. Fortunately, Blade Runner was showing at the same theater as “Jaws”, so it was going to be relatively easy to shift venues.

As a result I decided to leave early to join the extensive line of fans already queuing up. The version we were queuing up to see was the digitally remastered 2007 version of the film which was excellent.

Sean Young TCM Film Festival 2025 Blade Runner

Sean Young, who portrayed Rachel, was present to discuss the film and share her experience as a 19-year-old actress working with some of the industry’s heavy hitters. The 2007 version was nothing short of spectacular, with its vibrant colors that danced across the screen, breathtaking cinematography by Jordan Cronenweth that captured every intricate detail, and the evocative score by Vangelis that infused each scene with emotional depth. I made it a point to experience this extraordinary film in a theater, relishing the way it was meant to be enjoyed—larger than life, enveloping me in its visual and auditory splendor. With “Blade Runner” ending at midnight, I was tempted to make my way to the Chinese Multiplex to see “Wild at Heart,” but I could not make it. I spoke to some fellow movie fans who attended the screening, and they told me it started an hour late. They did not return to their hotel until well after 3 the next morning!

On the final day of the festival, I had three films I was eager to see. However, two of them unfortunately overlapped in schedule so I made a decision on which of the excellent movies to see.

After much deliberation, I decided to watch “Apocalypse Now” on the massive screen instead of “Sunset Boulevard.” I have attended many screenings of “Sunset Boulevard” on the big screen before making the choice a bit easier.

TCM FF 2025 Antoine Fuqua and Eddie Muller at the Apocalypse Now

Since I had never seen “Apocalypse Now” in a theater setting, the closest I had gotten was watching it on my own 4K 65-inch screen at home. Watchinmg the big screen version a real treat!

Director Antoine Fuqua and film noir expert historian Eddie Muller were there to chat about how impactful and utterly life-changing “Apocalypse Now” was to both. For me, the 70mm print of the original theatrical release version, courtesy of the George Eastman Museum from Martin Scorsese‘s collection, made the experience even more incredible, given Scorsese’s reputation as a champion for restoring and archiving the history of film.

The final film of the festival for me was the iconic masterpiece directed by Michael Mann, “Heat.” The atmosphere in the room was electric as both Mann and the legendary Al Pacino took the stage. Ben Mankiewicz, with his engaging charm, posed a fascinating question: how had two of the most celebrated actors of their generation, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, finally come together for a film? Listening to their insights was a profound experience, as they reminisced about the painstaking craft of filmmaking and the unforgettable shoot-out scene that erupted amidst the bustling streets of Los Angeles—a moment etched in cinematic history.

The film boasted a star-studded cast that left my mind racing with excitement, especially when I thought of the talented character actors who brought depth to the story. I could not help but reflect on the extraordinary Val Kilmer, whose powerful presence on screen had captivated audiences before his heartbreaking passing on April 1st. It was a poignant moment, filled with nostalgia for his talents, as I absorbed the richness of this cinematic event.

As I reflect on the TCM Film Festival 2025, I am filled with excitement and nostalgia. For anyone who cherishes the art of cinema and revels in the communal experience of watching films with fellow enthusiasts, I wholeheartedly encourage you to secure a pass for next year’s event. Over the past two years, attending this extraordinary festival has become a highlight of my year, weaving a tapestry of unforgettable moments. There is something indescribably joyous about being surrounded by kindred spirits—fellow cinephiles who share the same passion for storytelling on the big screen, all of us united in our love for film.

To encapsulate the essence of this experience, I am reminded of Gloria Swanson’s portrayal of Norma Desmond’s who’s poignant words from the climactic final scene of “Sunset Boulevard.” “You see, this is my life, it always will be. There is nothing else, just us and the cameras, and those wonderful people out there in the dark.” These words resonate deeply as I immerse myself in the magic of the festival, where each screening draws us closer together in a shared adventure through the lens of cinema!

Fringe: Review “Liberty”… The Fight for the Universe!

Fringe S5 Banner - Click here to learn more at FOX

Fringe Fans…it has been an amazing journey, these five years of our beloved show.

Fringe Letters of Transit Futuristic Banner - Click to learn more at FOX BroadcastingI have a confession to make; I have tried to prolong these reviews as long as possible so I can keep the show alive. In my heart I never want it to end, but alas as with all great things it must eventually come to an end.

I am glad that the producers (mainly Joel) decided to break up the last two episodes into two separate ones. It makes it easier on this reviewer to be able to ease into the ending better.

Click to visit and follow Joel Wyman on Twitter!Joel Wyman has often said time and time again that this show is about a family and with these last two episodes that has never been truer than now.

I suspect though that he was not only talking about the on screen family, but the off screen one as well. There are parts in both episodes where that is shown to its fullest extent.

I hope that you will forgive me if I get a little emotional when writing these reviews. This show has changed my life (and I suspect that I am not alone in that) in ways that I cannot describe.

It has given me faith again in television as a medium that can move people and can unite fans worldwide. It has restored my faith in quality writing, acting and directing, it has breathed new life into the sci-fi genre that has lost a little bit of luster.

    Liberty:Fringe S5x12-desperation in the lab

Now on with the show….I like the opening and how the desperation and urgency of the situation is felt throughout the scene. There is always great banter between Walter (John Noble), Peter (Joshua Jackson) and Olivia (Anna Torv) when they tend to get into their rhythm together.

It is always a treat because mostly Peter and Olivia are trying to decipher what Walter is saying. I love that Broyles (Lance Reddick) is still very much a part of their plan and that he is almost the shadow that mFringe S5x12-The Ravenoves between both worlds.

I love that he calls himself the Raven instead of Dove, which reminds me of Edgar Allan Poe and his most famous poem “The Raven”. The raven has always been a mysterious symbol as well; it has been steeped in mythology for such long time. It is very fitting that Broyles make that comment.

The scene with Windmark (Michael Kopsa) and Michael (Rowan Longworth) are great. It looks as if Michael has a slight smirk on his face, as if he almost pities Windmark in his attempt to extract information from him.

I love that Michael gives Windmark a taste of his own medicine, that he shows Windmark what it must have felt like to have been Walter or Hastings when they were both in the chair and being questioned by him.

Fringe S5x12 - Peter Flemming as the Loyalist Lieutenant“Liberty” features two very gifted guest stars that many science fiction fans will certainly recognize and we have covered at entertainment conventions.

The first is Peter Flemming, well known for his roles in Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. A veteran character actor, Flemming portrays an Observer Loyalist Lieutenant who reveals the detention location of Child Observer Michael’s unwittingly after Agent Broyles trickd him into thinking he is to provide an extra security detail at Liberty Island.

    Fringe S5x12-Windmark's nose bleed

That boy is strong, yes he is an anomaly, and he is the one thing that will ultimately be the downfall of the Observers. Michael Kopsa is as always great as Windmark, you are almost cheering at how he gets frustrated to an extent that he cannot break Michael.

I love how the answers to Windmark’s questions just bounce back at him, it makes it that much sweeter when you know that Michael is the clear winner in that ‘battle’. It makes me giggle to know that Windmark has been bested by a child. I find it interesting that he refers to Michael as “it” just as Walter did in a previous episode.

    Fringe S5x12-Echoed back

Where Michael is being held seems like a fortress as the team stated, but as Peter quickly pointed out no building is impenetrable. The plan that arises from the desperation is one that this viewer was happy to hear.

Leave it to Olivia (Anna Torv) to come up with the plan to save Michael. It has always been her ability to see the other side that has given the team its advantage. Only with the bridge closed how would they accomplish this, is the million dollar question? Only one answer…cortexiphan.Fringe S5x12-Fortress

It seems that Fringe has harkened back again to old school, which I love. It brings back parts of the past episodes that have always been my favorites. Seeing the cortexiphan, brought back all the memories of Olivia entering the tank and all the amazing things she could do with it running through her system.

Olivia was always unstoppable, not even a bullet (well, at least without Walter’s quick thinking) could stop her. Once she triggered it, stand back because she was not afraid to use it and use it fiercely.

Fringe S5x12-CortexiphanA lot of fans were a bit frustrated with the lack of kick ass Olivia in this season, but when she did finally show that side of her again, it was great.

Anna has always had the capacity to channel that rage into action and power. Just watch her body language when she is amped on cortexiphan, it is like she was a whole person again.

Peter’s concern about the effects that the cortexiphan would have on Olivia is palpable. Olivia knows that he is worried, so is she, she knows that without Michael the plan is lost.

Fringe S5x12 - Peter Kelamis as Doctor TobinThe second Stargate guest star making an appearance is the talented Peter Kelamis from Stargate Universe portraying Doctor”Tobin”. Tobin is called in to oversee the cortexiphan treatments given to Olivia in the lab warning she could be killed in the process if the dosage is too high. Naturally Walter overrides Tobin’s guidance and injects more cortexiphan into Olivia.

I love that Olivia reminds him that Etta died so that they could finish the plan, “both feet in, that’s what we said”. His comment of “What if I lose you, too” is so lovely, it is filled with such love that it almost stops the scene. Josh again shows his talent, his eyes reveal his pain at the thought of potentially losing her, too. She and Walter are all Peter has left, they are all the family he will ever have, now that Etta (Georgina Haig) is gone.

Fringe S5x12-What if I lose you

The points that Peter make about the Alt-universe and what if things are not where they remember and what happens if…are all valid and add fuel to his argument of why Olivia should not cross over. All good points, but Astrid (Jasika Nicole) is smart enough to figure out just how to solve that dilemma.

Walter and his brilliant inventions, it is because of that window that this whole mess started, but it is also the solution. Of course it doesn’t stop Walter from using yet another one of the wonderful (I will miss them) incarnations of Astrid’s name.Fringe S5x12-the Window

Seeing Michael in the chair and getting a paralytic is frightening. It is such a telltale about what Nina (Blair Brown) had said in the previous episode about how the Observers are animals. The way that Windmark is still affected by Michael, that he has to leave the room because the blood is still leaking from his nose is almost his comeuppance of sorts. It is almost getting to Windmark and Kopsa is great at just showing a bit of frustration.

Fringe S5x12-ParalyticThe scene when they finally get to Battery Park to find the proper space to set up the window, to me is when the episode shifts. The team has hope again (that word again!) they might just have the chance to pull their plan off.

It is great to see Donald/September (Michael Cerveris) again. He has always had a wonderful part in the Fringe family as a somewhat outsider, but now that we know what really happened and the purpose he always served it makes his role in the ‘family’ a whole lot better.Fringe S5x12-The blueprints

I like that we get to see Donald constructing the device that will help him travel to the future with Michael. His careful planning and precise details would make Walter proud if he were there helping him.

It made me giggle, though because I could not help but think of that brilliant show (and one of Josh’s obsessions) Breaking Bad, on AMC. With Donald blending all the elements together, it just was hilarious, because it reminded me of the “cooking” that goes on when making meth.

    Fringe S5x12-constructing the device

One of my favorite scenes (and there are a few in this episode) is when the gang head underground to help ready Olivia for the cortexiphan. It is an intense scene between all the main characters, you can feel the tension in the air, it practically oozes off the screen. Josh and Anna are fantastic in this scene, the care that Peter shows is perfect and the pain that Olivia goes through is visceral.

When Peter is attaching the pads to Olivia’s chest, you hear her whisper to him “I’m okay”. It is such a sweet moment, because she knows him and what he is thinking without even saying it. Again, Anna and Josh are the epitome of brilliant.Fringe S5x12-I'm okay

Watching Anna take each and every “shot” of cortexiphan was torture, but that was the point. You felt her pain, every shift or change of her body you could feel. Every time I saw the needle go into her neck it made me cringe. It was a perfectly constructed scene.

That scene must have been so physically exhausting for her and everyone involved. Those scenes are never easy for actors to do, but I applaud her for being the trooper and barreling through it like the pro she is.

Fringe S5x12-Olivia's painOne of my favorite things about this scene is Walter (John Noble). The ability that John has to turn his megalomania on and off at the drop of a hat is proof of his immense talent. His comment about the fact that he knows about cortexiphan and the effects is hilarious, but also a bit scary. That part of himself that he has been desperately trying not to have resurface does at times. Too bad Nina (Blair Brown) is not around to rein him in.

“Sacrifice is hard, son, but you are no stranger to it,” is such a great line that Walter says to Peter. It has so much meaning, especially in the finale episode. It is basically a huge foreshadowing of what is to come and also a nod to the past and what Peter has lost in every time line.

“Neither are you dad,” Peter answers him, and knows that Walter can relate in so many more ways than he could possibly imagine. The times that Peter calls Walter dad are few but when they do happen, it makes my heart swell. It is such a beautiful moment between these two men and it shows all over John’s face.

    Fringe S5x12-Sacrifice is hard

I love that the images that are present in Olivia’s cortexiphan laden brain are of little Etta (Abagayle Hardwick) and the short time they had together. The fact that there is hope (that darned word) of them getting her back is one of the reasons, dare I say Fringe S5x12-Beautiful memorythe ONLY reason that Olivia is doing what she is doing. The notion that she will have not only her “perfect little soul” back, but her husband and her life back is the best incentive ever.

The light in her eyes comment is funny. It gives Anna a chance to be snarky with Walter for once. It is also a tender scene with John and Anna embraces it wonderfully. Those two actors are always incredible in their scenes together. When you have two powerhouses going head to head it makes watching the scenes a whole lot better.

Fringe S5x12-Bothersome lightThe moments of Peter saying goodbye to Olivia before she goes to the Alt-universe are beautiful. You can see in Josh’s body the worry and fear that is running through Peter.

He does a great job of manifesting it and showing it through his eyes. I have always said that Josh is great at revealing his emotions through his eyes and in this scene there is no doubt. The “I love yous” are just perfection. I guarantee every Polivia fan was squealing with joy.

    Fringe S5x12-Watching Olivia go

Hello Alt-universe! Hello Bolivia, damn she still looks great for being 50 years old. I am so happy that Lincoln (Seth Gabel)and Bolivia got married and have a son. I was a little confused by that since we all know that she had VPE and nearly died giving birth to Henry in the episode Bloodline. Maybe things changed or they found a cure, but nonetheless it is amazing. Seth Gabel aged well…it is so great to see him again, too. I love that the producers are bringing back cast members from the past.

    Fringe S5x12-Bolivia Older

Am I the only one that got choked up and teary eyed when both Olivia’s hugged? I don’t know why it was such an emotionaFringe S5x12-Friends finallylly powerful scene for me. Maybe it was because of the now friendship that they had developed despite the history that we the fans know has been a part of their past. It is as if they are long lost sisters seeing each other again, Anna does an exceptional job, as she always does when playing both versions of Olivia.

Fringe S5x12-Happy FamilyIt is a little sad to see her reaction to the picture Bolivia has on her desk, it is a reminder of what she once had with Peter and Etta and will hopefully have again…if all goes as planned.

I was a little confused about how Bolivia knew about Etta and the fact that she was missing. I think there were a few scenes that may have been left out and that we will hopefully see on the DVD. I know that on twitter there were folks that had said that Bolivia and Lincoln’s son name was Trevor and that there was a scene that was shot but not shown. On well, let’s hope we get those in the DVD.

I also love the fact that the cortexiphan is affecting Olivia as she sees her little girl again at three years old standing in Bolivia’s office. It is such a jarring sight, but great to see Anna’s reaction to it.

    Fringe S5x12-Images of Baby Etta

The scene with Windmark and his superior in 2609 is great. That room is so stark; it is quite disturbing because it reminds me of a mental institution and the sterilization of what that represents. The baffling quandary of Michael and his advanced intellect is causing great concern for Windmark. He cannot accept the fact that Michael is far greater a threat than he could ever imagine.

That Michael may be the cause of their downfall. I think that even though Windmark doesn’t say it he feels it and knows it somewhere in that Observer brain of his. “There is no greater danger than that which is unknown” as Windmark states, which has been a running theme in Fringe since the beginning of the show…the unknown.

Talking about Michael like he is a thing is disturbing, asking that he be “disassembled and preserve the parts” is so creepy it sounds like something out of a Stephen King novel.

    Fringe S5x12-Future 2609

    Fringe S5x12-Like Old Times

Olivia’s scene with Lincoln is great, I love that there is still a little reminder of the decision that she chose Peter over him; but that she is glad to see he has a wonderful family.

Seth is great at that tension and he shows it well, but I think he will always love Olivia, but differently now. Bolivia’s comment about “her young ass” is funny and so cute to see Lincoln react, they are completely in love and it is beautiful.

Fringe S5x12-Olivia's young assNow comes the kick ass Olivia that we all know and love and have missed (some fans have) dearly.

When she arrives again, she is clearly disoriented and keeps seeing things. Her hallucinations are some of the things that Walter warned about and Olivia has to be extra careful and know which ones are real and which ones are not.

Michael being wheeled to an examination room is eerily reminiscent of what happened to Olivia in the Entrada episode when Walternate wanted to vivisect her to see how her brain and the cortexiphan work. It is very interesting that Olivia was considered an anomaly to Walternate, a threat as well and look at what happened to her and how the show has almost come full circle again.

    Fringe S5x12-Michael on the table

Olivia becomes her bad ass self as she roams through the halls looking for Michael, anybody that gets in her way gets taken out. You can clearly see the desperation and urgency in Olivia’s body as she races against time (literally) to get Michael and herself back where they belong. Anna is always at her best when she is in her kick ass mode; she has that confidence and swagger that has always made her great to watch as any incarnation of herself.Fringe S5x12-Finding Michael

Rampaging through the hallway she fades in and out again, but after encountering an Observer and besting him, she charges toward her goal and finds Michael. The little smile that Michael has on his face when he sees her is sweet.

Just because he does not speak does not mean that he does not feel or comprehend what is going on. The contrary is the case with Michael; he is more in tune with everything and everybody that he is beyond feeling.

Fringe S5x12-Down but not out for the countWhen Olivia and Michael make their way to escape and are caught by the Observer, you think they are done for until the team of Dunham and Lee open fire in a carefully choreographed synchronicity that you are cheering for them.

The last scene with both Olivia’s is bittersweet, again we say goodbye to the Alt-universe, we say goodbye to a part of Fringe that has always been a weird little part of the family.

Without it we would not have our beloved show, love it or hate it but know that it will forever be our Red verse! Goodbye old friend you will be missed.

    Fringe S5x12-Perfect shot

Anna once again does what she does best; she is perfection as she bids herself a farewell. I love Bolivia’s retort to Olivia’s statement of “You have a beautiful family” and she says “Thank you, go save yours”…watching it again I am getting teary eyed.

It is a beautiful scene between two characters (albeit the same actress) that shows just how much each has grown over the course of the five years and the different timelines. They are not so different after all. Anna’s talent is one of the things I will most definitely miss on TV, she is a rare gem.

    Fringe S5x12-Saying goodbye to Bolivia

    Fringe S5x12-Back safe and sound

Arriving back with the team everybody breathes a sigh of relief, especially Peter. He has her back in one piece and he is glad. But the fight is not over as Olivia mentions that the Observers know she crossed over.

The scene in the van when Peter and Olivia have their moment together it is so…perfect. There is really no other word to describe that scene, a photo of that scene was leaked on twitter and of course it set the fandom on fire. Now we know the context of what is was and are very happy about it.

Windmark sitting at his desk as he asks the officer about how Michael disappeared is creepy. When he rats out Broyles you want to just scream, because that is very bad. But we all know that Broyles can most certainly handle himself..

Fringe S5x12-Windmark's officeIt is so great to have the episode end with Donald going to see an old “friend”…December (Eugene Lipinski). I always liked his character, because he was always giving September the benefit of the doubt. He had a soft spot, so to speak, for the plight of September and the “family” he made himself a part of. The producers did a nice job of keeping that a secret too, I like how they are bringing back some of our favorite characters.

Watching that scene again floored me, here’s why, I was so excited about seeing December again that I completely missed what September said to him. When I did watch it again and September said “Walter Bishop is back and we have the boy,” makes me think that this was always planned. That what happened has happened and that the timeline needed to get reset again on order for things to be as they were. It was a HUGE HUGE HUGE revelation and one that segues perfectly into the next episode. That last shot of the door closing revealing 513 was pure genius.

    Fringe S5x12-End

Well, that is the end of this review of the second to last episode of Fringe ever. I hope you enjoyed the episode as much as I did and used enough Kleenex to warrant opening another box. I would love to hear your comments and remember Fringe is and always will live on …forever!

    Hello Fringe fans!

Fringe Letters of Transit Futuristic Banner - Click to learn more at FOX BroadcastingI hope that you are surviving the hiatus. With the New Year just around the corner, so are the last three episodes of Fringe.

It is bittersweet to know that so few remain, but also great because we will see the final battle unfold as it should be.

Fringe S5x10 - Peter and Olivia working close togetherIt has been an interesting season; we have lost a few beloved characters, gained new ones and finally got back our beloved Polivia.

It was questionable whether or not we would see Peter (Joshua Jackson) and Olivia (Anna Torv) back together, but last week’s episode showed us that their love is as strong as ever.

Come January 11, 2013, the final battle will be waged and we will see what Walter has in store and what his plan has been all along. Hopefully by the end, all will be revealed and everyone will be satisfied. I am glad that we found out that question that had been burning on everyone’s mind…who is Donald?

The answer was shocking to say the least, but a wonderful one at that. What else is in store for our beloved team? Only time and Joel Wyman will tell as he did in this appreciation video from December 13, recently re-tweeted by the great team at Fringe on FoxTV.

We also include the latest promotional trailer courtesy of FOX TV below for your enjoyment.

    Now…on with the review.

    Anomaly XB-6783764:

Fringe S5x10 - Rowan Longworth as Michael the Child Observer MichaelI like the little boy who plays Michael (Rowan Longworth). He is doing a good job at conveying his empathic abilities, which I am sure again will be revealed more as the remaining episodes count down.

It must have been hard for the team to get answers out of him, since he has yet to speak a word. It does also make you wonder what happened to the connection that he had with Olivia in the past. Will it be again or is it lost to time?

Fringe S5x10 - Walter examines MichaelWalter (John Noble) plying him with candy is fun, no doubt a desperate plea on his part to try and find out why he is so important to the team. His frustration with Michael’s non verbal communication is evident.

Walter suggests that they try and pry things from Michael’s mind via going into it as he did with September (Michael Cerveris).

It always cracks me up when John gets outrageous, because he lets Walter’s madness bubble to the surface and just peak out; John always does it to perfection. I also suspect it would be a good excuse for Walter to use more drugs.

    Fringe S5x10-Candy little boy

John also has the great ability, as we saw with Walternate, to have a sinister side to him. What he feared would happen, when he told Nina (Blair Brown) about becoming the man he used to be is starting to show through. Let’s hope that Walter, the one we know and love will still be intact by the end of the series. His God complex is surely starting to manifest and take over, hopefully Donald and our team can prevent that from happening.

    Fringe S5x10-Walter's Frustration

It is so wonderful to see Blair Brown have such an integral part in this episode. She has always been a favorite actress of mine and I am glad that she is finally being utilized the way she should be. Nina’s intentions in this episode are what make this episode so epic. Blair had explained so well about her final decision being one that she had no choice in the matter.

Fringe S5x10-Observer gadgetsThe gadgets that the Observers use harkens back to a past episode, Road not Taken, where Peter (Joshua Jackson) had used an old record player to extract sound waves from a window. I mentioned before that as diabolical and cruel as the Observers are they do have some of the coolest gadgets around.

Windmark will stop at nothing to extract any and all information any way he can. I must give great praise to Michael Kopsa for playing Windmark with such evil intent that he makes it so much fun to hate him. He is truly one of those characFringe S5x08 - Georgina Haig as Ettaters that once his demise comes; cheering will be heard throughout all of Fringe fandom.

I think that Nina, somewhere in the back of her mind, knows the eminent danger she is potentially putting herself and the team in, but the cause and what the outstanding Austalian actress who portrayed Etta (Georgina Haig), died for is more important.

Finding a way to help the team is of the utmost importance to her and something she feels show owes Olivia (Anna Torv) and the team.

Fringe S5x10-Walter's coldWalter’s snarky comments are abounding in this episode. Again, John manages to make us laugh even during the direst of situations. Having that extraordinary gift is something I as a director and a Fringe fan know is something to cherish. His comment of “I’m cold” reminds me of the countless times he has complained in previous episodes of the lack of warmth or food at crime scenes.

Nina has always been a very mysterious character, never quite knowing if she is on the side of good or bad. She has toed the line a few times and has definitely done some questionable things in her time.

Fringe S4x19 - William Bell in amber

The fact that she is and I suspect always was a part of William Bell’s (Leonard Nimoy) and Walter’s inner circle speaks volumes about why she has always been shrouded in mystery. Why she has always had these weird connections, like Peter used to, to things that are not quite explained. How she knew Sam Weiss (Kevin Corrigan) and how she happened to mention this black lab that Massive Dynamic has.

Fringe S3x12 - Sam Wiess discusses Peters vibrations

Nina’s concern for Walter is evident as shown through the conversation with Peter. They are both worried about him and rightfully should be. The interesting thing is that Nina has seen Walter the way he used to be and knows all too well what reverting back to that state can do harm not only to Walter but the plan and the team.

“Your father understands that anything worth fighting for comes with a cost” is what Nina ultimately tells Peter. How right she is, because this statement not only pertains to this particular episode but every sacrificial episode from every season. The priceFringe S5x10-Peter & Nina talk that they ALL have paid in one shape or form has brought them to this point in time. The picture of Etta plastered on the wall driving home the statement that Nina just told Peter.

The black lab entrance is cool. Leave it to Nina to have a lab underground where all kinds of experiments are taking place. It is of no surprise what they find down there. It explains how Nina has been more than aware of how the Observers work and she has always been one step ahead.

    Fringe S5x10-Black Lab entrance
Fringe S5x10-Thinking about Etta The scene between Peter and Olivia when he asks if she is thinking about Etta is great. Anna has a vulnerability about her that shows in her body language and she also proves how visceral she can be as an actress.

Her maternal instincts are on alert with Michael ever since they found him and in a way he is helping her heal from losing Etta. Peter’s comfort is always ever present, in the way he interacts with her and the way he looks at her. Josh again displays his talent for compassion that Peter has shown since he fell in love with Olivia.

Fringe S5x10-Walter with the ECOGWalter’s fascination with the ECOG device is a little disturbing, more so when he says to prep the subject and Peter corrects him that his name is Michael.

Walter seems to be slowing reverting back to his old self, glimpses we have seen throughout this season. John again being the brilliant one to just give us enough of a shadow to know that something darker looms.

One thing that I found interesting and that no one (at least not in my circle of Fringe friends) has brought up is what Michael represents. What I mean by this is that I cannot help but think of the Michael the Arc angel. If I remember anything of my Catholic schooling, it is that Michael led the armies of heaven against the forces of Satan and defeated them. To me that is what this Michael almost represents, he is the answer and the one that will be the one to ultimately defeat the Observers. It also makes me wonder why he would be so important to Walter if it weren’t for what Michael possesses. Why Donald was sworn to keep him safe, that Michael is indeed the one or dare I say weapon that the team has in their pocket, their ace up their sleeve, in a way.

I maybe reading too much into it, but it was just weird that no one picked up on that. I guess that’s because science and religion do not mix very well, that Michael had to be shrouded (sorry for the pun) in something a little less obvious. I would love to ask David Fury who wrote this episode if that was what Michael represented in this episode or what Michael represents overall. I guess that is a question for Joel as well…his is the maestro after all.

There have been many references to the Observers being like the Nazis and in some ways I can definitely see the correlation. Their methods mirror those that make them look similar to the Nazis, Windmark being the most sinister of them all. It is an eerie sight indeed, frightening to say the least.

    Fringe S5x10-Interrogation

Of course Michael’s readings are off the charts, of course he processes things differently than the other Observers, and he IS different, like September (Michael Cerveris). He is the one that is the major cog in Walter’s wheel of a plan, without him the whole thing falls apart. He is an empath; he isn’t the cold, calculating Observers that we have seen (minus September of course). He is the chosen one, the one of great importance, the one that will lead them to the final battle with the Observers…sound familiar? That is where my theory of the arc angel comes in.

The shot of the warehouse made me giggle out loud. It reminded me of the last scene in one of my most favorite movies, Raiders of The Lost Ark. I don’t know if that was intentional to make it look like that, but it was great fun to see. It also made me think that like the warehouse in Raiders, what secrets does this warehouse hold?

    Fringe S5x10-Warehouse

The scene with Hastings in the interrogation room with Windmark is very reminiscent of what he did to Walter in episode one of Season 5. It does not matter to Windmark how he gets his answers as long as he is satisfied that is his main goal. By any means necessary.

When Olivia informs Nina that she has been coFringe S5x10-the futurempromised that is when the episode really begins to shine. It is some of the best writing and acting that I have seen in a long time, mostly on Blair Brown’s part. Her decisions from this scene forward are ultimate and when the plan is set in motion there is no stopping her. She knew what she had to do as tough as a decision as it was it is what needed to be done in order to keep the team and Michael safe.

I am so curious what Michael showed Nina when he touches her cheek and she reacts. I suspect it’s the future if they do not defeat the Observers. I hope that we will get a reveal about it so that we the fans are not left in the dark.

The team needs to get back to the lab as soon as possible, especially knowing that Nina has been compromised and possibly put Michael in danger. What they do is brilliant; leave it to Peter, the reformed con man to think up that plan.

It works and oFringe S5x10-Peter's planur beloved team escapes for the time being. I love that Peter can still hot wire a car; it just goes to show that those con man skills never die!

Once the lab has been breached this is when one of the best scenes in recent memory takes place. Blair does some of her best work and it is so brilliant that it will be forever remembered for the power, but for also the end result.

    Fringe S5x10-Breached

Fringe S5x10 - Windmark discovers Nina's experimentation on his kindWindmark discovering the experimented Observers is what sets him off. He calls Nina an animal…I thought pot calling kettle. When Windmark reads her he points out that she had mentioned the boy Observer, he is important to the fugitives, again my theory goes here. The fact that Windmark says that the boy is a chromosomal mistake leads me to believe that Michael has a power that is still untapped.

That Michael is the one and only thing that Windmark is afraid of even though he lets on that he isn’t. Sometimes it is those mistakes or anomalies that turn out to be the very thing that we have been looking for the whole time.

The ones that will save the universe, kind of like how Superman was an anomaly, a boy wonder and the power he possessed ended up saving the world. So was Jesus in his time, again religion comes into play, but only to make my point.

Fringe S5x10 - Nina compares The Observers to unfeeling reptilesNina’s speech to Windmark about why Observers tilt their heads is so freaking brilliant I cheered when she finished. She was so on point that you almost wanted to high five her mechanical hand for the excellent job she did.

What she pointed out was so true that it was eerie. The fact that the Observers had devolved instead of evolved is a testament to the human spirit and the relationships that we have. The way that we show love and compassion, the way we feel does not make us weak, if anything it is the one thing that defines us as humans.

Her speech is the last hurrah she has before she makes the ultimate sacrifice. She did it for love, for the love of Olivia, love of Walter, Etta and I even suspect love for William Bell. Nina truly gets the last word, in your face Windmark!

When she shoots herself, twitter went crazy! It seems that Nina after all these years had become a character that fans really loved and to see her commit the ultimate sacrifice stunned everyone, but also made her immortal to everyone. It was the second shot heard throughout all of Fringe-dom (the first being the one that killed Etta). Goodbye Nina, you will be missed, in more ways than one.

    Fringe S5x10-Nina's ultimate sacrifice

The scene when the team discovers Nina dead is so heartbreaking, but John and Anna are the two that really shine in this scene. Even though Olivia does not show as much emotion as Walter did, does not mean the loss is not great. I was disappointed to see that fans were saying that Olivia’s reaction was not as powerful as Walter’s. I do believe they were wrong, dead wrong.

Olivia’s reaction was perfect…for Olivia. What they failed to remember is who Olivia really is. She was never one to break down, on rare occasions she has. Olivia never thought herself worthy of love and always kept a distance so as to not get hurt. She had to develop the thick skin that she had in order to survive her life. I do believe that Olivia feels very deeply, probably more so than we do.

    Fringe S5x10-Finding Nina

    Fringe S5x10-Walter's sorrow

Walter’s reaction was perfect as well. John Noble made a great point during one of his many Noble Intentions videos that maybe Walter and Nina’s relationship may have been deeper than we always thought. John always brilliant as usual moves you to tears. I also love what Josh does, how Peter comforts Olivia, but in a very soft, loving way.

I made a point to someone that all the people in Olivia’s life, regardless of time line, whom she loves, always end up dead. That is my point as to why she always has that pain, it will always be behind her eyes, because she has gone through a hell that we can only imagine and never wish on another human being.

Anna Torv’s talent is undeniable; her eyes are so perfect at revealing those emotions, just under the surface. John had made the point that her subtly is brilliant and that is what makes her so good. Olivia has a quiet strength that has always been there. She carries Fringe S5x10-Walter with the ECOGon through unbelievable pain, she is a survivor, and she is the very definition of the word.

Where they find Michael is clever, obviously Nina made damn sure that Windmark could not find him and he was too hell bent on finding the fugitives that he did not bother to look any further. I love that once they find him and pull him out; he sees Nina and reacts as only an empath can. The single tear speaks volumes, bravo little one!

When Walter dons the ECOG it is a great scene because at first the reaction to the questions are just nods. When Walter asks Michael why he was needed for Walter’s plan, and why he was important he does the same thing he did to Nina, touch her cheek and show her.

The montage is beautiful, it is flash back of all past episodes and a virtual zoetrope of memories that Walter had either forgotten or repressed.Fringe S5x10-Michael shows Walter

The final revelation to the question is what we have all been waiting for…the question that has been on every Fringe fans mind, who is Donald. I must say it was one of those moments when I audibly gasped! It was so wonderful to see Michael Cerveris again; he has been sorely missed in the fifth season. It was a little weird to see him with hair, but great nonetheless.

Okay, well now we know who Donald is, what I want to know (and I am sure every Fringe fan on the planet wants to know) is how did Donald become September? Is the boy Observer possibly September? Was September another anomaly as well that somehow slipped through the cracks?

    video
    play-sharp-fill

That would explain a lot about September and the significant role he played not only on the show but in the lives of Olivia, Peter and especially Walter. I know that Michael Cerveris said on twitter that his being Donald was the hardest secret he had to keep, but he loved the reaction of all the fans!

When Walter finally tells the team that Donald is September they are a little perplexed, how that is possible I bet they are thinking. The look on Walter’s face is wonderful, almost like a veil had been lifted from something that was clouding his memory. He almost had a look of relief and nostalgia, as if to say to himself, now it all makes sense.

Fringe S5x10-September is DonaldBeautiful, heartbreaking episode, I am conflicted about the fact that there are only three episodes left. I am happy that we do get to see the final battle between good and evil, but I also do not want to see our team’s story end. I am being selfish when I say that I want Fringe to go on forever.

The good thing is that thanks to other mediums, Fringe WILL go on forever. I do hope that there is going to be more in the way of comic books and possibly a movie or two. Until then, we always have our DVDs and fan fiction to tide us over.

It will be a hell of a final ride and this fan is desperately looking forward to it. Have a Happy New Year Fringe fans, see you in 2013 and remember that “Momentum can be deferred, but it must always be paid back in full!”

  • Chevron 7.5: The Wraith, Superman and Bummenhole, oh my!

    Hello all!

As with any convention, there’s the laughter, the “what the…” moments and just the downright interesting parts…both good and bad! Chevron 7.5 was no different.

Click to visit Chevron 7.x by Massive Events!

Understandably, I think most people went into this convention with heavy hearts after both Teryl Rothery and Michael Shanks not able to attend at such a late date, but the guests who were there definitely managed to shine a light to the weekend.

Chevron 7.5 Tony AmendolaSarah Douglas - Garshaw at Chevron 7_5
It all started with the opening on the Friday evening which was brief but not without it’s funny moments. Tony Amendola was first announced and was glad to be there as he should have been (planned to be) at the last convention Chevron 7.4 by Massive Events.

He was followed by Sarah Douglas, who seemed a little overwhelmed at the response to her announcement. She jokingly said “Hi” in a little scared voice but also said she was looking David Nykl 2010forward to meeting old and new friends alike.

David Nykl totally played up his announcement with Superman jumps until he got to the stage and did a very dramatic bow!

The next guest announced was Andee Frizzell, who is seriously so, so crazy but an absolute delight as well. She copied David’s entrance but then her mic didn’t work. Cue: the organisers being labelled “jerks”!

Kavan Smith came up next and apologised for looking “like a tramp, a hobo” and eventually took his hat off after a little heckling! He looked exhausted and it sounded like he hadn’t been in the UK long at all! Click to learn more about Kavan Smith on IMDB

Last but not least, was Lexa Doig and it was decided that she likes her heels! She acknowledged that it took her twice as long as everyone else to get to the stage, “And now I show off the shoes.” They were very nice shoes though, it has to be said!

They talked a little about their flights to the UK: Andee had alcohol on hers…good old BA! Tony flew Kiwi airlines, and was happy his flight took an hour less than it was supposed to. Sarah came by train up from Stratford, whilst the other 3 flew over from Vancouver…they reckoned they were probably on the same flight and in the same bar beforehand but just didn’t realise, although Lexa hoped the person kicking her seat wasn’t Kavan!

Most notable event though, was Andee turning on one of the MCs and ordering him to ‘kneel’ wraith-style followed by her dancing and singing “I still got it”. It was also established during the opening that Kavan and AnClick to visit and follow Lexa Doig on Twitter!dee would be the “wallflowers” of the weekend.

The main part started on the Saturday morning with the photo sessions. All of mine were on the Saturday (or supposed to be, I apparently can’t tell the time and missed one, so got it Sunday instead!). My first one was with the absolutely lovely Lexa Doig. She was taking the time to speak to everyone before the photos and finding out names, where people were from etc. Just a really friendly lady, and far more awake than everyone else at 9am!! And just a note on how pretty she is in person as well, and her hair was shiny enough to rival mine according to the crew. Completely random, and a “you had to be there moment” I think, but amusing all the same.

Next I headed to get a few autographs while I had a break. Poor Kavan seemed a bit jetlagged because he asked me about the umlauts in my name but I’m not entirely sure he understood! Tony asked the same thing, so I think they probably think I’m German now…it’s a reason to actually brush up on my German at least! And David just wanted there to be a photo of him smiling from Atlantis because all the stills he’s ever seen or signed have been serious poses! Bless.

I then headed back for my photo with Andee, and you don’t realise how tall she is until you’re dwarfed! And to make matters worse for little old me, she was wearing heels. The solution: walk up and say “You do realise you’re going to make me look really small.” And be met by the enthusiastic response of “I’ll crouch” and Andee jumping down. Highlight of my photos, for sure. I had a quick turnaround after that for my photo with Sarah. The poor photographer, honestly. She was so funny and just kept babbling away talking to people whilst posing that I think the photographer had to take quite a few shots of each person because she’d start talking again just as he took a photo!

The photo with David was next and the one thing I remember is the whole hair palaver. The photographer pointed out that my hair was a bit windswept at that point (which was lovely of him by the way, because I was able to sort it out at least!) and it prompted David to look at the photographer as though to ask “What about mine?” and start playing with his own hair. It’s funny though, how he was smiling with teeth during that debacle but he pulls a serious face for the actual photos! Ah well. I still like the photo! Then was the photo with Kavan, and man, does he pull you right in for it. Not that I’m complaining at all!

At that point, I missed my photo with Tony because I went for lunch and lost track of time. Whoops! I did however learn to tell the time and make it to the first talk on time! The only problem I have is that my memory does not like the fact that the talks head out onto so many tangents in such a short space of time, so the recount of all the talks will probably be quite s ketchy!

Chevron 7.5 Lexa Doig and Tony Amendola

First up were Lexa and Tony, and Lexa wanted “to start off by saying [she] will take any questions for Michael. [She] loves putting words in his mouth!” And talking of Michael Shanks…the main story seemed to focus round the Shanks’ trouble with bears and racoons. Apparently they laid a new lawn but while waiting for it to ‘set’; it kept getting torn up by racoons in the middle of the night.

They tried everything to keep the racoons away, including camping out all night to try and catch them, and Michael using a BB gun which alas, apparently had no effect on the racoons as they looked at where the gun had hit them, looked back at Michael and carried on! After that, Michael and Lexa’s brother wanted to get paint guns to aim at the racoons but Lexa was like “Hell no! You are not doing that!” much to their disappointment. It ended in them covering the lawn in mesh netting so the racoons couldn’t even get to it.

Tony chimed in with how he knows he’s been away from home on a job too long because when he gets back, his wife always tells him there’s a new possum nesting somewhere in the house and it, of course, has a name. The best one he could remember was when there was one behind the oven and his wife said “’No, there’s something really wrong with this one.” And it looked like something out of Alien because its stomach was moving but it was actually just carrying its young in its pouch. His reaction was “Well what could I do?”, so I presume he just let the possum family stay! And there was the time when he found a possum living under the mattress of his day-bed, and thinking “Why move out? It knew when it had it good!”

Chevron 7.5 Lexa Doig and Tony AmendolaContinuing the topic of animals, there’s also a lot of bears (or as Lexa pointed out for us Brits, the Canadian plural is simply still ‘bear’) where the Shanks’ live now, and Lexa wasn’t used to just having a bear wander across your garden. So one day, she was in the kitchen washing up and she saw a bear just looking through the window (cue meerkat like impression of the bear).

Long story short, she remembered Michael had told her bears didn’t like noise so she started screaming and yelling “blah, blah, blah”. The bear apparently looked at her like “What are you doing?” at which point, she ran off yelling “Bear, bear, Michael, bear!” He picked up pans to bang together, opened the door then shut it with “Hell no! I’m not going out there!” It was a Momma bear and her 3 cubs looking for shelter from the rain. A while later, the bear clan were traipsing across the garden and Lexa felt sorry for them and decided that “Maybe we should just let them in.” Michael looked at her like she was crazy, apparently.

Back on the actual topic of Stargate, someone asked Tony something about Bra’tac, and I just remember the answer being that all he knew was he’d got the role of a 133 year old alien, so he trundled to the set and to the make-up trailer ready to find out how much he’d need in terms of prosthetics. The main make-up artist looked at him for quite a while and from all angles, and then declared that he didn’t need anything doing. Bless! Tony reckons the art of flattery has long disappeared!

Also asked was their favourite thing about being part of Stargate. Lexa answered that it was definitely working with Beau Bridges because he’s such a legend…and that she would have said working with Michael but they hardly had any scenes together. This apparently wasn’t such a bad thing! Tony wasn’t sure because he enjoyed the whole experience, but then decided that he liked Bra’tac’s fight scenes, especially when it involved knocking Richard Dean Anderson to the floor!

I think someone also asked about how they filmed the symbiotes and Tony said it was an interesting experience because they had to hold a prop of the symbiote and wiggle it around when needed until the animation could be put in afterwards.

Slotted in next was an episode screening of “Tabula Rasa” with commentary from David and Kavan who decided that the show was basically about tic tacs and Kavan kept chanting “tic tacs” every time Lorne or his team would take the tablets. They also reckoned that when Amanda [Tapping] and Joe [Flanigan] looked like they were always thinking intently, it was because they were making up their lines as they went along. There were also a lot of imitations of Jason [Momoa] grunting “What?” as it was supposedly the only thing he ever said! Kavan also pointed out that obviously his men were highly trained because they missed Carter, McKay and ZelenkChevron 7.5 Sarah Douglasa hiding in a small room, which would be impossible really because he never misses an attractive blonde!

After that, there was Sarah’s talk…well it was more of a Q&A w ith the MC and an insight into her career. There was lots of talk about Superman and how she’s only just come to terms with being known as “that girl from Superman”. She also mentioned how she got the role in the first place after having 8 auditions cancelled and having to be persuaded to go to the 9th one. Which when she did, she was kept waiting at the studio and then proceeded to yell at the director for keeping her waiting because she “was a serious actress and shouldn’t be kept waiting!” even though she was only early twenties! It worked in her favour though because they were apparently looking for a super bitchy character. As part of the audition stage for the role though, she had to try flying on the wires. Sarah said she turned up for that part all seriously dressed in a tutu and ballet pumps, and the girl who flew before her was in the skimpiest outfit…and apparently wearing no knickers as the crew on the ground pointed out because they were disappointed that Sarah was!!

In terms of Stargate and playing Garshaw, it was a blast even though she didn’t entirely understand the whole alien concept and took the inspiration for bowing her head from the nodding dogs you put in the back window of your car! She also added that she thinks Amanda [Tapping] is amazing for putting up with the boys because they were constantly making rude noises, telling jokes and playing pranks! You can just imagine it too.

After a short break, it was time for the talk with Andee, Kavan and David. I’m not sure there’s much else to say other than it was…enlightening. Right at the start, David came on stage first and when Andee followed, he pretended to be sizing her up, which she took full advantage of with being far taller, and he jokingly cowered and sat down.

Chevron 7.5 Andee Frizzell and David Nykl

Earlier in the day, someone had told Andee that they were originally from Bubbenhall but she heard it as Bummenhole and said she just had to tell everyone, and she ended up shouting it out quite a few times during the talk! However, Kavan being Kavan did come back with the response of “You know you won’t get pregnant if you do it in the…”

Back on track, the main focus of the talk was on Andee’s prosthetics and how it took 8 hours the first time but they eventually got it down to 5 hours as the series progressed. However it meant that she was always the first and the last one on set, and one time, as she was in the shower in her trailer, washing away all the excess make-up, her trailer started moving and apparently they were towing it away with her inside screaming and clinging to the shower rail!  She also mentioned how she had to be driven everywhere even after the prosthetics were off at the end of the day, because the contacts gave her pin-hole vision so anyone could be around her and she wouldn’t realise, therefore she wasn’t allowed to drive.

Chevron 7.5 Kavan Smith, Andee Frizzell and David NyklAlso, because the only time people saw her on set, she was in all her prosthetics, when it came to the wrap parties, no-one would recognise her. She’d be walking up to people and trying to talk to them and they’d just look at her and walk away. So eventually, after being ignored by one of the sound technicians, she walked over to her and her husband and burst out with “Oh, so this is how it’s going to be. Yesterday you had your hands down my pants and now you’re ignoring me!” Apparently the look on the husband’s face was priceless and Andee didn’t realise what she’d said til much later!

Someone also asked all of them if they’d ever left set in their make-up…which as Kavan and David pointed out, that question only really applied to Andee. And as the Queen of hilarious stories, she had in fact done so. She’d been on set early as usual for prosthetics but took a break to do a coffee run and drove 10 blocks to the nearest coffee shop. She was standing in the queue and ordering her coffee all whilst being in nearly full wraith make-up…and I mean everything minus the hair, which meant she just had a skull cap on with her hair sticking through a gap at the back!

Talking about the Wraith, Andee was asked what it was like having Joe [Flanigan] on his knees in front of her. The response: “What was it like having Joe Flanigan kneeling before me? Hellooo, have you seen him? What do you think it was like?!”

I can’t even remember how it came about but I remember Kavan just heading out on a tangent and telling us he had “loads of kids, but the 2 I’m going to tell you about today are the 2 I live with…” and later on when asked who they would feed to the Wraith if they could, Kavan nominated his kids as long as he could have them back for birthdays and Christmas…although he was fine with it if they left the Wraith-y stuff over their mouths to keep them quiet! David and Andee (to much applause) nominated McKay as the best choice!

Although David didn’t manage to get a word in edgeways with Andee babbling on, he did make some priceless comments on her stories! And he of course lowered the tone when they were asked what they would tell aliens was the best thing about Earth. After unanimously deciding on beer, David chipped in with “Oh, and boobs.” which was followed by a whole conversation between him and Kavan on women and boobs. What can you say? Men!

Chevron 7.5 Kavan Smith, Andee Frizzell and David Nykl

My friend also asked a question about Kavan’s role in Human Target but he didn’t understand the question so Andee said she’d translate it for him. The translation was “What colour underwear are you wearing?” and without even thinking: “Blue.”. When he actually worked out the question and the fact it was about his British accent (Because he’d been talking about Amanda [Tapping]’s British accent during the screening), he told everyone that all he’d had to say was “Blimey”…which started a whole new round of saying “Blimey” in a British accent then yelling “Bummenhole.”

It was also during this talk that Kavan brought up the subject of who could make the most annoying noise for the longest amount of time. He then proceeded to make a high-pitched, really scratchy “Eeeeeee” that seemed to last forever, or at least until David pretended to turn him off!

After that, it was time for the auction which looked to be a success judging on how much some of the items were going for. But the auction wasn’t what people had hung around for really, it was of course the big announcement for Chevron 7.6…even though I think a lot of people had already figured it out! The room went dark and the video started playing, and I’d decided to stay calm because I thought I’d guessed, but then it came up that Teryl Rothery was going and I am unashamed to admit that I did squeal along with everyone else! However, no surprises that the subsequent announcement of Richard Dean Anderson did raise the roof!

On Sunday morning, I only had a couple of autographs to still collect. The slightly odd thing was that I got talking to Lexa about the party the night before and she did remember me as the girl in the heels with the gun. Whether that is good or bad, I have no idea, and didn’t want to ask!! On Andee’s autograph desk was a pile of chocolate, because she’d mentioned loving chocolate, so now she’s decided that at her next convention she’s going to announce what alcohol she likes and see if any turns up on her desk! Andee was still crazy and taking time with each person. There was a young child in front of me, and when asked what her favourite Stargate show was, the kid answered with Atlantis and Andee started celebrating. I then, obviously, had to say to her “Is this the part where I say SG1?” at which point she started joking she should kick me out of her queue, so we stuck to Atlantis talk.

Getting my autograph with Sarah was slightly more serious, because when she asked where I lived, it came up that she’d done a play in my hometown many years ago. Comparing what the city was like then and now (with much laughter), we came to the conclusion that I should move away. It was actual ly really nice to have a British guest there because as lovely as the other guests were, when they asked you where you lived, it was just a courtesy because they didn’t really know!!

I then headed for my photo with Tony, and honestly, he is just so nice, especially seeing as I nearly ran into him the day before just outside the photo room. Although it has to be said, that he loves wearing that hat! And just for photos too!

Chevron 7.5 David Nykl and Andee Frizzell

Afterwards, I headed into the hall for the first talk with Andee and David and it started with the craziness that would carry on throughout. As always, David likes to mak e an entrance: from the Superman jumps on Saturday, to racing around the whole hall and then stopping at the camera to pretend to film the stage on Sunday. It only continued with the rule that flash photography is only allowed for the first few minutes, and then there’s a countdown; a countdown which they both decided to dance along too. Followed by David making Andee stand up andChevron 7.5 David Nykl and Andee Frizzell + mics it coming to light that she’d laid an egg, and then taking apart their mics and using the fuzzy balls as noses. Comedy gold!

Again, there were lots of Wraith stories from Andee, the most notable being when she had to be submerged in full Wraith outfit and make-up, but they hadn’t foreseen the problem of her hair, face prosthetics and pants being made partly from foam. So she got in the water and after a few seconds she could feel her hair and face being pulled upwards and inflating, followed by her pants, and in a last desperate attempt to stay underwater, she grabbed the weight at the bottom of the tank; except that didn’t work out, because eventually that started floating upwards too!

Long story short, she was supposed to rise out of the water very slowly and gracefully, with a calm face…instead she shot out of the water, screaming! The crew apparently wanted to re-shoot that scene but she flat-out refused after that palaver! Yet that wasn’t the end of it. Her prosthetics went right down to her neckline and when she took it off later, she was left with a ring line of hickeys where the foam had pulled at her skin!

David then talked about how there wasn’t really a name for his character when he got the role, but he knew he’d made it on the show when Zelenka got a first name! And also how Zelenka was obviously more intelligent and more well liked that McKay.

He also spoke about the fact that he could get away with saying what he liked in Czech, on set, so he made the most of it! Apparently there are some episodes where David is just swearing in Czech purely because no-one knew any different!

After that, there was the quiz, during which it was established that Kavan paid no attention to character names or which episode was which because his answer to everything was “What the —-?” or “Who the —- is that?” It was actually amazing that his team won! Although when Lexa demanded “What planet are you on?!” at least he managed to answer with “Um…Atlantis?”

Following that, there was a quick break where Tracy (@honesthunny) managed to find me, and being the absolutely wonderful person she is, gave me one of the places she’d won for the guest encounter with Lexa. The whole time was pretty much just laughing, as Lexa told of her latest project, her favourite music and books, amusing stories of Vancouver and how no-one recognises her there, along with an embarrassing story of when someone actually did! And we must say thank you to Lexa because she has given us permission to post everything that was talked about at the encounter, but I’ll let Tracy do that because she has all the notes and it was all down to her that I was even there in the first place!

After that encounter, we headed back to the hall and found that Tracy had also won 2 places for the encounter with David, but we decided that I’d go to the talk with Kavan and Lexa while she went to the encounter so we had both angles covered.

Chevron 7.5 Kavan SmithThe talk with Lexa and Kavan was just out of this world…I don’t think there was even a running theme throughout it. They started by swapping funny stories of their kids, including Kavan taking his son to the toilet and his son proclaiming “Woah Dad, you have a huge penis!” to which his reply was apparently “Uhh, thanks.” Although Lexa did wonder how many penises his son had to compare it too, and Kavan cheekily replied with “Well I’m not home much so who knows?!” He then turned the table to Lexa for funny kid stories.

Her first one was her son wanting to go out in the winter wearing shorts and when she told him he couldn’t go out in them and had to go and change into pants, he asked who had made it cold and she replied with Mother Nature, and being a curious child, he asked who told Mother Nature it had to be cold and she told him God. At this point, her son asked who God was and Lexa was starting to panic internally, trying to think of a way to explain it when her daughter stepped in and just said “God is the president of Earth.” Atta girl! Seriously, best response to that question I’ve ever heard.

The other one was about Earthquake drills at her kids’ schools, seeing as Vancouver is on a fault line. Because as Lexa said “Obviously if there was an earthquake, there’d just be a long line of parents chatting away and waiting for their children to be brought to them!” Although during this drill, Lexa was talking to another parent, and her daughter kept whining and trying to get her attention but Lexa told her to hold on and not interrupt, so when she eventually turned to her daughter and asked what was up, her daughter just looked at her and went “I can’t remember what I was whining about Mommy!”. Lexa reckons it was one of the cutest things ever!

They were then talking about how thinking you’re cool will always come back and bite you, with Lexa saying she Chevron 7.5 Lexa Doigwished her younger self hadn’t thought she was so cool which resulted in a couple more stories. The first of which she was going to meet a friend, but there was a huge traffic jam so she decided to get out of the taxi and walk. I can’t remember which city she said she was in at the time, but there was a garbage strike, so the streets were lined with bags of rubbish, which only made her embarrassment worse. Basically, she was walking down the street and got wolf whistled by a car of young men, so she turned round and said “Easy boys!” (Kavan: *in disbelief* “You actually said that?!”) then turned round again and walked straight into a pole, staggered backwards, lost a shoe and fell into a pile of garbage.  She surmised it wouldn’t have been so bad had the traffic been moving, but the same people who had seen her fall, then watched as she pulled herself up, searched for her shoe then carried on walking down the street as though none of it had happened!

She also talked about bad 90s fashion and wearing a faux leather mini-skirt and jacket, and thinking she looked hot because she was practically getting marriage proposals as she walked down the street. It was only when an older women pulled her aside and pointed out that her skirt had ridden up, did Lexa realise she’d walked goodness knows how many blocks with her butt hanging out. And now that she was conscious of that fact, she also realised that the skirt rode up every 5 steps with the friction from the jacket. It was then that she “realised the marriage proposals were for my butt, not my face!”

Kavan then talked a little more about his family, and bless his wife, the stories he tells. He told of how they had a housewarming party not long after they were married and that when his mother asked his wife why the dog was called Lucy (because she’d had the dog before she met Kavan), his wife answered “Because I heard that dogs respond well to names with hard K sounds.” At which point, his family just looked at him like: “You married her for her brains then.”

Typically, Kavan then started making boob gestures before turning to Lexa and asking “How big did your boobs get when you were pregnant?” She replied “Massive.” And got “Cool!” plus an immature grin in return.

The only Stargate related part of Lexa and Kavan’s talk was when Lexa continued her Scottish accent from the earlier quiz and asked if Kavan could do an impression of Paul McGillion. The smart alec answered with “Sure, give me two pieces of buttered toast.” There was no reply to that. At all.

And then sadly, the final talk and closing ceremony were upon us. The only question I really remember from those though, was about party tricks. David showed everyone a coin trick and no-one else could think of anything until Andee showed us a yoga trick. Kavan then turned to Lexa with “Hey, what was that trick you were telling me about earlier? Something about tossing salad with your vagina?” She just looked at him in total shock, surprisingly! It turned out that they’d been joking about being able to launch ping-pong balls from a vagina although as Lexa pointed out, “I don’t know where you got salad from ping-pong balls!” and the conversation just went downhill from there…

    Chevron 7.5 All guests

All in all, it was a brilliant weekend against all the odds, all the guests were charming and it was lovely to see old and new friends alike. I hope this report has managed to share at least some of the spirit of the Chevron weekend!
