    Hello fellow Comic-Con fans.

I know it has been over two months since it ended, but we still feel the fantastic excitement from our favorite convention. I am reflecting on the amazing panels I attended and some of the great interviews I had the opportunity to conduct. This year, I am happy that Comic Con is back in full swing. Despite the two strikes in 2024 that severely impacted the event, it did not seem to have any lingering effects. It looked improved than ever. Every year, Comic-Con continues to grow, with more panels, more independent artists, and an even greater selection of amazing things to buy. And every year, I find myself loving it more. I have been attending since 2012, and each year feels like my favorite. It is always a pleasure and something I eagerly look forward to whenever Comic Con arrives. The fun and informative panels, along with the intriguing and surprising interviews I get to conduct as a member of the press, make it even more exciting. I always look forward to discovering new and exciting information about current projects that specific stars are working on.

    The Toxic Avenger:

One panel I really enjoyed this year was The Toxic Avenger panel featuring Director Macon Blair, Peter Dinklage, Elijah Wood, and Taylour Paige. The panel was held in the famous Megalithic Hall H on July 24, 2025 to a rave fan reception. There were lots of laughs, and a trailer for the film, a remake of the original The Toxic Avenger from 1984, was also shown.

I was never familiar with that comic or movie before, but this version looks incredibly fun and funny. I am glad to see that. Hopefully, this Toxic Avenger will attract a whole new audience to both the film and the older versions. Elijah Wood mentioned that he was thrilled when he saw the conceptual drawing of what his character, Fritz, would look like.

It was nothing like Elijah had ever played before, and he stated that the chance to transform into that character was fun. Peter Dinklage mentioned a point about how, with The Toxic Avenger, the message of environmental concerns and climate change can be discussed using satire or humor to bring those issues to the forefront. Peter feels that The Toxic Avenger is necessary and needed, especially now that the environment is under a deeper threat than ever before. We include the full panel below courtesy Troma Entertainment.

    Legion M:

I also had the immense pleasure of interviewing the production team behind Legion M, which is producing a graphic novel and hopefully a movie called ‘Defiant’ about Robert Smalls that I recently reported on. If you do not know who Robert Small is, look him up by clicking the links included above. Smalls was an incredible individual who lived during the United States Civil War era.

Legion M is such a fantastic company when it comes to independent films and filmmakers. I had the pleasure of speaking with them, and they provided me with some insight into what it takes to get a movie produced and off the ground.

    Stern Pinball:

Image by Lori Glumac of #TeamWHR

One of my favorite parts of attending Comic Con is connecting with companies I genuinely admire and respect. One of those companies is Stern Pinball, a renowned manufacturer of gaming machines that specializes in creating highly unique pinball machines.

I have been covering their remarkable machines since 2022, when I had my first interview with them. I have been a fan ever since, and this year I had the opportunity to conduct another interview with Matthew Geyer, the VP of marketing for Stern. Matthew discussed their newest pinball machines, namely Dungeons and Dragons and King Kong.

But the highlight is their latest launch, the Jaws 50th Anniversary Premium Edition, which they are incredibly excited about featuring many innovations and awesome artwork. I also had the pleasure of playing not just with the new JAWS machine but a full range of their different machines, which include games of every type and everything! It was also a lot of fun to see a life-size statue of the Quint character right next to the Jaws pinball machine! He kept a close eye on it, ensuring that everything was going smoothly. Matthew told me that they usually launch about three to five games a year, with three major releases. These are always tied to pop culture, like rock ‘n’ roll or comic books. It is always fun to watch YouTube videos of these incredible machines being built and played, and to see the cool features Stern includes in them.

    OverPower:

    OverPower logo

The appeal of Comic Con also introduces attendees to a variety of genres. On July 26, 2025 I learned more about comic books and card games to fantasy novels when I attended the **OverPower** Press Room courtesy of the SuperPR Guy Gary Miereanu. OverPower is a game where two players battle with teams of four heroes and villains. “Unlike most other collectible card games, OverPower is not a resource management game, which makes its gameplay unique and both strategically and structurally different from Magic: The Gathering“. I must admit that I am unfamiliar with this type of card game. I did not participate in any of it, so it was a little daunting for me to take this interview when I knew nothing about the product. However, upon learning about OverPower and sitting down with the creative team, I gained a whole new perspective and respect for what these gentlemen do. The artwork is incredible, and it is an immensely popular card game, similar to Magic: The Gathering. However, it features darker characters and richer artwork.

2027-07-26 Casey Parsons in SDCC 2025 OverPower Press Room
Image by Lori Glumac of #TeamWHR

I sat down with Casey Parsons, the ongoing staff artist for OverPower, who says he is creating “3 cards a week on average.” He is working on Flaxons and Alien Invaders. He is given a specific block of time to complete the project and deliver what the company requires. A highlight for him was receiving the call to draw Cthulhu; he loves drawing monsters the most. Having his Cthulhu published was a childhood dream come true. Some of Casey’s artistic influences are George Pratt and Bill Sienkiewicz; he loves the old-school artists. He mentioned how he loves art history, and one of his major influences is Rembrandt; he loves to “create through that filter.” Casey said he is not a very technical artist, which makes drawing machines more challenging for him. “I enjoy drawing monsters and organic elements. However, I prefer not to use rulers. I like to draw all my lines freehand. So, all the buildings are done freehand, and I work traditionally.”

2027-07-26 Ito SDCC 2025 OverPower Press Room
Image by Lori Glumac of #TeamWHR

Next, I spoke with an artist known as Ito. We discussed how AI might influence the design of characters in this type of game. He was not concerned about that because he knew fans could tell the difference and prefer their art to be hand-drawn with oils and watercolors. “The number of gigabytes you cannot replicate. I hand-draw without using a lot of gigabytes, and AI is not there yet.” One of Ito’s influences outside of comic-book artists is John Singer Sargent, known for his portraiture and free, carefree brushstrokes. Lawrence Alma-Tadema and, of course, Michelangelo. He was wearing a Bob Ross T-shirt, and I mentioned Bob as well, and he noted Ross’s carefree style.

2025-07-26 OverPower team at SDCC 2025 Press Room
Image by Lori Glumac of #TeamWHR

It was wonderful for me to sit down and talk with these gentlemen about their art and their passion for it. They still had enthusiasm and passion for drawing and painting, preferring to use real watercolors or oils instead of digital methods. There is nothing like pencil to paper. Sorry. And it really is effective, especially as someone who tries to oppose AI as much as possible; having the actual touch of an artist makes an enormous difference.

As a result of interviewing with the gentleman from Overpower, I have a new respect for that genre and those types of card games. I wish them the best of luck with their current iteration and hope it performs exceptionally well. Unfortunately we could not interview the entire creative team in the SDCC Press Room. Instead we include interviews with OverPower courtesy of our friends at ThatsMyETV.

Overall, it was a successful Comic Con, 2025. A few bumps and glitches here and there, as has been the case since I started all these years ago. But you go with the flow, enjoy yourself, and have a grand old time. I do not think I will ever grow tired of attending Comic Con, as it is a celebration of art, artists, comic books, pop culture, and things that bring people joy, and we need that now more than ever.

    Hello, fellow Comic-Con attendees!

We are just days away from San Diego Comic-Con 2025! This year is a bit less chaotic than last year’s event, with no major Marvel movie screening like the one the previous year featuring Deadpool & Wolverine. Still, there are always fun things to see and do during the con, both inside and outside the convention center. This year seems to have more anime and games featured. We have not seen that since the writers and actors’ strike in 2023. Some major studios might not have panels this year, but that doesn’t mean their presence will be absent at the Con. Luckily, Hall H will host some great panels on Friday, although there will be very few on Saturday, which is unusual since both days tend to be the busiest.

    2025-07-12 Comic-Con Museum

The Comic-Con Museum also features historic Star Wars movie items from Star Wars: Echoes from the Galaxy. All of the fabulous items up for sale are being done by the legendary Julien’s Auction House.

Visitors can tour the museum located in nearby historic Balboa Park, only a short distance from the convention center to see some of the historic items up for sale before the auction that will be conducted on Sunday July 27, 2025.

Lucas Museum of Narrative Art banner

This year is historic, as the legendary George Lucas will make his Comic-Con debut with a panel discussing his new Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. The panel will be moderated by Queen Latifah a legend in her own right. I do not doubt that with George Lucas present, Hall H will be even more crowded. The auction will be held at the museum on the last day of the con, Sunday, July 27th, at 10:00 am. Happy bidding!

    The Toxic Avenger banner

Thursday, Day One of the convention, kicks off with ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ opening the Hall H panel in style, followed by a panel featuring two major comedians, Gabriel Iglesias and Jo Koy. This might be the first time comedians host their own panel at Comic-Con.

One panel I am especially excited about is ‘The Toxic Avenger’ with Peter Dinklage. It will be great to see Dinklage back in Hall H, especially since he usually appeared there for the Game of Thrones panels in earlier years.

Another exciting event at the convention is that Stern Pinball is bringing its new machine to the convention. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the iconic shark movie that started it all… JAWS. Stern Pinball is riding that wave and unveiling its JAWS-inspired machine.

Their Stern pinball machines are fantastic and feature some legendary franchises, such as John Wick, James Bond, and The Mandalorian as well as rock and roll icons like Rush and Metallica. They also have their convention room at the Marriott Marquis, where you can try out some of their featured games. I plan to try my luck with the new JAWS machine and will give a report.

I and everyone I know was eagerly hoping for a ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps‘ panel in Hall H since the movie opens on July 25th, but unfortunately, there will be no Marvel panels this year.

I think the chaos that resulted from the ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ surprise panel premiere last year at led Comic-Con International and Marvel Studios to decide against a special screening of Fantastic Four: First Steps at this years legendary pop culture convention.

Friday at San Diego Comic-Con in Hall H starts with ‘Outlander‘ and its spinoff ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood,’ followed by ‘Alien: Earth,’ the Stephen King movie ‘The Long Walk,’ ‘Predator: Badlands‘ which has been moved up a month to November 7, 2025 from it’s original December release.

Friday in Hall H concludes with the exciting  long anticipated return of Disney Studios Tron franchise starring Jeff Bridges as the fabled Kevin Flynn. I for one am looking forward to the ‘Tron: Ares‘ panel!

    Primitive War poster

If Hall H is not an option for you this year, there are still plenty of other fun panels to check out.

Some highlights include the exciting ‘Primitive War‘ set in Vietnam 1968 where a United States recon unit known as Vulture Squad is sent to an isolated jungle valley to uncover the fate of a missing Green Beret platoon. The group soon discover they are not alone.

The Primitive War panel is being presented in second largest venue, Ballroom 20. Featured stars include Ryan Kwanten, Tricia Helfer, and Jeremy Piven.

Also returning to the con is ‘Dexter: Resurrection‘ with Michael C. Hall and the cast, moderated by Jamie Chung.

Friday is always busy, with most panels taking place in the three main spots: Hall H, Ballroom 20, or the Indigo Ballroom at the Hilton Bayfront. Whatever you choose to do during the convention, plan accordingly, as most panels overlap and it can be challenging to see everything you want.

If you don’t have a badge for Comic-Con, don’t worry – you can still enjoy plenty of activities. Every year, Petco Park hosts a variety of exciting attractions. This year’s setup at Petco Park features a gritty underground Gotham City. Adult Swim, Abbott Elementary, will each have installations outside the convention. Most exiting is he soon to be released Alien Earth that will feature an immersive experience known as “The Wreckage” outside the Hilton Bay Front Hotel Thursday through Sunday

    Malibu Barbie Cafe San Diego

The Gaslamp restaurants will also showcase installations and offer fun food options and swag for fans. Paramount is bringing back “The Lodge”. Fans of Barbie can wear roller skates and roll around the Malibu Barbie Café. Peacock’s Twisted Metal is offering a “Bumper Battle” experience at San Diego Comic-Con. This interactive event allows fans to step into a post-apocalyptic world and participate in a bumper car tournament inspired by the show. Please note that since these activation’s don’t require a badge, lines may be long. It’s a good idea to check wait times on social media.

    Stranger Things S5 poster

With Warner Bros., Fox Studios, Disney, and Netflix not having panels this year, the panel rooms might be quieter, but that could mean more time for everyone on the convention floor. I am surprised that Stranger Things doesn’t have a panel this year, given that it is their final year, and it has always been a convention favorite. It’s always interesting to see which major series will and won’t be featured at Comic-Con when the schedule is released. I know everyone has their favorites, and it can be challenging, but it’s always fun regardless of the choices.

One thing that will always remain a staple at Comic-Con is the comics and the artists. No matter where you turn on the convention center floor, you will always see lots of vendors selling comic books or their original art. Take a stroll through Artists’ Alley and discover the amazing art showcased every day. Support these incredible independent artists, whether it’s by buying a sticker or original artwork. Another great way to support these artists is by sharing their content on all your social media platforms. After all, comic books were the original reason why Comic-Con started over 50 years ago.

As I finish this post and get ready for an exciting adventure, I want to remind all fans to support local comic book shops, local artists to keep pop culture, movies, and TV series alive! Importantly, stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, comfortable shoes, pack snacks, and grab as much swag as you can. Bring your enthusiasm! See you soon in San Diego!

The Saturn Awards, a prestigious celebration of genre cinema, first graced the entertainment world in 1972, spotlighting the captivating realms of science fiction, fantasy, and horror films.

Over the years, this iconic ceremony has broadened its scope to embrace the magic of television storytelling. In a heartfelt tribute to the late Lance Reddick, the awards introduced in 2024 the inaugural Lance Reddick Legacy Award, honoring Keanu Reeves for his outstanding performances in the beloved John Wick franchise. This accolade embodies a profound appreciation for an actor’s talent and the unforgettable characters they bring to life on screen.

Lance Reddick, a cherished figure within the science fiction community, garnered acclaim for his remarkable role in one of my all-time favorite series, Fringe. His untimely passing in March 2023 left a void in the hearts of fans, yet his enduring legacy will be celebrated through this special award in perpetuity.

Dean Devlin of Electric Entertainment, whose series The Ark earned a nomination, aptly described the Saturn Awards as “a great celebration of nerds cheering on nerd stuff.”

As an admirer of Mr. Devlin’s many contributions to genre entertainment over the past thirty years which include Stargate and Independence Day in then 1990’s, I wholeheartedly resonate with his sentiment!

As devoted science fiction fantasy drama fans, we revel in honoring our favorite narratives and characters, and this year, the highly anticipated Godzilla Minus One has undoubtedly secured its place on our list of cherished highlights.

Godzilla Minus One Director Takashi Yamazaki
Image courtesy Takashi Yamazaki on X

Godzilla Minus One is not only a genre film but also sets itself aside as a lesson in filmmaking. As I mentioned, what the director, Takashi Yamazaki, did regarding special effects is astonishing.

Unlike other recent Godzilla movies that are so CGI-heavy that they take you out of the fantasy, Minus One managed to strike a perfect balance. It utilized CGI to enhance the storytelling and create a visually stunning experience without overshadowing the narrative or the iconic monster. This balance is a testament to the film’s quality and a reason for us, as fans, to be reassured about the franchise’s future, knowing it is in good hands.

    Godzilla Minus One Rampage

In this latest interpretation of Godzilla, the narrative strategically emphasizes the deeply woven human stories that resonate throughout the film. The creature, a looming shadow of fear, is not always depicted in its monstrous form but instead manifested through the terror and awareness of its impending presence. The filmmakers masterfully crafted a narrative that operates on multiple levels, disguising itself as a poignant commentary on political and social issues. Within this framework, Godzilla emerges as a powerful symbol of humanity’s hubris, a tangible representation of the chaos and destruction that ensues when conflict ravages a nation. The film unfolds as a chilling reflection on the aftermath of war, illustrating how its consequences give rise to a monstrous reality that lurks beneath the surface. Let us delve into the rich political and social themes “Minus One” explores, revealing how they intricately enhance the film’s overall narrative depth.

    Godzilla Minus One Destruction

What I find captivating about the film is its intricate weaving of Japanese cultural elements, vividly illustrating how the world has grown increasingly complicated. The filmmakers boldly decided to minimize Godzilla’s on-screen presence, yet his overwhelming impact reverberates through the narrative when he does appear. This deliberate restraint heightens the tension and anticipation, making the moments when the monster is revealed even more gripping, allowing the viewers to feel his powerful influence throughout the film.

One compelling reason to celebrate “Minus One” is its complete embrace of the Japanese language, which enriches the film’s authenticity and immerses viewers in a culturally nuanced experience. This choice elevates the storytelling, making it particularly enchanting to enthusiasts of Japanese cinema. Godzilla, a legendary icon, originated in Japan and deserves to be depicted through the lens of its rich cultural heritage.

Godzilla Minus One Shocking - 800

The film boasts an extraordinary cast, with Minami Hamabe portraying the resilient Noriko Ôishi and Ryûnosuke Kamiki embodying the complex Kôichi Shikishima as they navigate the challenges of post-war Japan. Their performances breathe life into the struggles and emotional depth of a society grappling with its past.

With the release of this latest incarnation of Godzilla, I hope Hollywood will pay attention to the nuances of crafting a genre film. It is a refreshing reminder of how to skillfully operate within the constraints of a modest budget while emphasizing storytelling more. The filmmakers of Minus One demonstrated an impressive ability to utilize visual effects with remarkable efficiency, creating a more immersive experience. Additionally, I was captivated by how the film concluded, leaving viewers with an intriguing hint of potential for a thrilling sequel which is currently being written to add to the seventy year Godzilla phenomena.

In closing, I penned an article that explores my deep affection not just for Godzilla but specifically for Minus One. The sheer brilliance of the filmmakers resonates with me profoundly; their remarkable dedication and creativity breathe new life into this legendary monster, resurrecting it from the figurative grave. It is truly inspiring to witness how they reimagined this iconic creature, blending nostalgia with innovative storytelling. I cannot help but admire their remarkable efforts in elevating the Godzilla legacy to new heights.

    Greetings fellow Comic-Con enthusiasts!

This year’s event was quite the experience. Having attended San Diego Comic-Con since 2012, I can attest that it has always been the most significant, wildest, and most exciting show. Even during the pandemic, when everything went virtual, Comic-con remained a beacon of hope for us who love this event. But thankfully, in 2022, the convention came back in full force and was better than ever before.

However, I learned that major studios like Marvel, Disney, and HBO (now called Max) wouldn’t attend the 2023 convention. Initially, I thought it wouldn’t be an issue, but then the writer’s and actor’s strikes happened, and many people thought it spelled doom for Comic-Con. Nevertheless, I remained hopeful because I knew that the original incarnation of Comic-Con was all about comics and always will be. Even if some parts of the convention are affected by strikes or other issues, we will always have a love for comics that brings us together.

Despite the recent SAG/AFTRA strike, some actors could still attend because they had other projects that fell outside the strike’s parameters. One such actor was recent Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis. She was promoting her upcoming comic book called Mother Nature. The line to get in the room was long, and I was worried I wouldn’t be able to get in.

There were about ten seats left in the way back. I was one of the lucky ones to get those precious final seats. We were all so relieved to get in as we waited over an hour. It was worth it. The panel and Jamie Lee were great. I had a great time. It was fantastic to see Jamie Lee venturing into the comic world and embracing that genre.

Things were different at Comic-Con regarding entertainment panels, and that’s okay. The megalithic Hall H was used, but not as much as it typically is. Usually, Warner Brothers, Netflix, HBO, and other studios have panels for their most popular shows and movies in Hall H, where attendees often camp out for days in advance to get a front-row seat. That was missing this year, albeit there were a few panels in Hall H, but nothing like in the past. In fact there were no Sunday panels in Hall H or many of the other huge ballrooms. As a result, the convention floor for exhibits, artists, vendors, and other panel rooms, particularly the smaller ones,  were a lot busier with all the people who usually would be in panels in Hall H, Ballroom 20, or the Indigo Ballroom at the Hilton Bayfront hotel choosing other options.

The vendors exhibit hall floor was busier this year, and lines were capped quicker than usual. Merchandise was being bought faster, which was terrific for the vendors counting on the attendees to buy their wonderful wares. In fact, several vendors sold out and had to bring in additional stock. It also gave independent artists more exposure as well. More people on the floor meant more people venturing to “Artists Alley” to discover the newest art and their fabulous offerings.

I saw more people at the comic book vendor’s booths this year, which was beautiful. Collectibles were always part of the fold when it came to Comic-Con. You can find pretty much anything that interests a collector. Two of my favorites were a Pee Wee Herman figurine and the robot from Bad Robot Productions.

The bigger booths were missing from the floor: Netflix, ABC Disney, HBO, Marvel, and Warner Brothers to name but a few.

One major vendor that was missing that I always enjoy was Sideshow Collectibles.

Sideshow is always a highlight and one of the busiest booths on the floor. I always loved seeing the incredible statutes displayed at that booth.

Instead, this year Sideshow had its own virtual convention that featured its most popular and newest statues. I hope that they will return next year.

    Abe Sapien-ECC Booth-SDCC 2023

With Sideshow not a part of the convention floor this year, that gave way to other vendors to take its place. Lego had paid homage to the Blockbuster video stores we all loved in the 80s and set up a “Brickbuster” store on the convention floor. Funko and Mondo again were the most significant booths on the floor, and lines there were hours.

Thankfully Star Wars had their own booth since they had no panels this year. Mattel Creations, Entertainment Earth, Super 7, Dark Horse Comics, and IDW all had their booths running as usual, making the floor feel like home. Even though Sideshow was not present, there are always fun statues to see. One of my favorite vendors is Elite Creature Collectibles; their busts are incredible and very life-like. The one I loved the most was the bust of Abe Sapien from the Hellboy movies.

John & Kathy Romita panel-SDCC 2023Smaller panels featuring comic artists were highlighted and focused despite needing more significant panels. I went to the John Romita, Jr panel, and it was terrific. He and his wife Kathy held court and discussed his career and famous father. I had heard of Romita (both Senior and Junior) through friends of mine that are comic book nerds.

I had a great time in the panel and learned more about how comic books get published and what an incredible life he has had, and the dedication it takes to do what he does. The endless hours, Kathy chimed in that she should write a book about being the wife of a comic book artist.

    Conan the Barbarian panel-SDCC 2023

    Matt Murray & Jim Zub-Conan the Barbarian panel-SDCC 2023

I also sat in on a Conan the Barbarian panel with editor Matt Murray, Jim Zub, and Fred Malmberg all of whom are associated with this superb new comic graphic novel.

The panel was produced by by Titan Comics and Heroic Signatures who are launching a new monthly Conan the Barbarian graphic novel series.

It was a fun panel that I really enjoyed!

As I have a good friend who is a die-hard Conan the Barbarian lover, I learned a bit more about the famous sword-wielding hero that is not apparent in the movie renditions of this famous character.

The Conan the Barbarian graphic novel creators revealed that Solomon Kane will return to the fold. I know some people will be happy to hear that. Below the Conan trailer, we include a fun interview courtesy of Fanbase Press.

Due the cancellation of many panels this year, I could also explore the convention floor and find more vendors I would have commonly overlooked. As with all conventions of significant size, everything will have pros and cons (pun intended).

One panel I could attend this year, which I unfortunately missed last year, was for Stern Pinball. I had the pleasure of interviewing Jody Dankberg about the company and any future endeavors the previous year. It was much fun, and they let us know that Venom was the newest addition to their comic book pinball machines. I did not get a chance to play the pinball machines like last year, but I have played many of their machines in the past, and they are always a lot of fun.

The other wonderful thing I love about San Diego Comic-Con is that there are always things to do, whether in the Convention Center itself or at the Marriott Marquis, outside behind the Convention Center, at Petco Park or just enjoying the always outstanding Cosplay.

There is always something to do for comics, entertainment and games fans for all visitors to San Diego. Thankfully the weather this year was not as hot as it usually is. It was a little bit odd with light rain in the weather, but everything was still fun, nonetheless.

    2023-07-23 Gaslamp Quarter

Also, the great thing about San Diego is that the historic Gaslamp Quarter or district that always has themed restaurants during Comic-Con. You will find restaurants modeled after Bob’s Burgers, or Interview with the Vampire. I went to one modeled after Mooby’s from the Kevin Smith movies. I went there with a few friends, and we had burgers and beer, and it was decorated in that fashion of the film, plus there was also merchandise. So it was nice to escape the Convention Center for some time. But again, the Gaslamp Quarter always has themed restaurants which is so much fun!

The activation’s, as always, had long lines this year, but that’s par for the course regarding Comic Con. The most significant activation this year was the Jurassic Park 30th Anniversary which featured the top scenes from this iconic movie. We include a fabulous video of the exciting experience courtesy of IGN below for your enjoyment.

Another fun exclusive to San Diego Comic-Con 2023 was the Quantum Leap activation provided by the great folks at NBC Universal Entertainment.

With expanded coverage as compared to SDCC 2022, over the four days of Comic-Con events, located across from the convention center near the entrance to the GaslampQuarter, Quantum Leap fans could “leap” into the terrific television worlds of “Law & Order,” “SVU” and “Organized Crime,” “The Voice” and “Chucky” to help stabilize the timelines with the help of the “Quantum Leap” time travel team!

SDCC is always wonderful to experience. Just be prepared for long lines in the sun and always take along lots of sunscreen and plenty of water to stay hydrated. Another fun experience was strolling through Lazlo’s garden from What We Do In The Shadows. We include a cool video below about this fun experience courtesy of Through the Lens of Lady Kay B.

What We Do in the Shadows installation-SDCC 2023However, it was a shock to the system for many people who are usually at Comic-Con for the TV shows or movies coming down the pipeline. People adjusted well, and they could have a good time no matter what. They could still enjoy themselves even without the big panels, no matter what. I know I did. And you learn new things about comic books, games, Cosplay that you didn’t even know about, and that’s what’s always fun about these conventions. You find new and exciting things to be happy about. Overall, it was a fun time, and I look forward to attending Comic-Con again in 2024, regardless of whether it has the studio’s presence.

Lastly, I’m in solidarity with both the writers and actors as I am both in real life and will pursue a career later in my life as a director. I know there was talk about the strikes; there was concern about the future of Comic Con and what would happen if the strikes continued. I hope you enjoyed this article and will take comfort in knowing that Comic-Con has been going strong for 50-plus years and doesn’t plan on slowing down anytime soon!

With Comic-Con 2022 firmly in the past and me fully recovered from the whirlwind again, I begin my coverage of the Pop-Culture event that returned for the first time in three years when I had the exquisite pleasure of interviewing Jody Dankberg, Senior Director of Licensing and New Business Development of Stern Pinball for Team WHR on July 21, 2022. And what a wonderful Pin-Ball gaming experience it was!

As a child of the 80s, video games and pinball were a staple at the local arcade. I was one of those awkward kids that used to stand for hours and pump quarters into the pinball machines, trying to hit that top score and add your name to the list of legends already there. I have always been a huge fan of pinball, so when the opportunity arose to interview Jody, I jumped at the chance. I include a video sample of the great Stern Pinball games below for your enjoyment.

Stern Pinball specializes in unique and pop culture pinball machines. From classic tv shows and movies like Batman ‘66, Star Trek and The Munsters to ones from music icons such as Rolling Stones, AC/DC and Kiss.

It was so cool to see all the literal bells and whistles that these games come with. The way the player can be interactive with the game is incredible. Just looking at all the cool hidden gems that are part of each game is really a treat for those of us that remember the shows or movies.

The newest Stern Pinball editions are Led Zeppelin and Rush, complete with flashing lights and symbols from their most famous songs. Here in my hometown of San Francisco there are a multitude of bars and arcades that feature many of the incredible games from Stern. We include the the Stern Pinball Rush Edition video below for your enjoyment.

One of the places I have gone to several times is the Emporium, an arcade and bar that features several of these games. I have had the pleasure of playing these incredibly fun games and it is not easy. Pinball requires good hand eye coordination. You must make sure to hit those targets and make the bells ring. Some games, like Stranger Things (video included below), you must get the ball in the Demogorgon’s mouth, no easy task. You get three tries and if not, well then back to the upside down it goes.

Speaking with Jody, who is a guru of pinball, I learned a little more about what pinball is and why it has always been such a fun game to play. There will be an exciting announcement of new games in the Fall and toward Christmas.

My first question to him is why is pinball so popular? His answer was that his “objective was when he became a part of the company 13 years ago that he turns pinball into the popular game it once was” (and frankly in my opinion always has been). There is “such a high demand now for games not only from the core customers but so many casual folks, families, younger fans and even little kids.” He mentioned the folks at The Emporium who are great friends of Stern and from Chicago as well. Their pinball machines are also demanded in places like Nashville and Las Vegas. “They are giving you entertainment and nostalgia; the nostalgia brings you in” Jody had said about why these machines are played more. “It is something, social, it is something fun, it gets you out, it also brings people together. It can be something you do by yourself…” to me this is another reason pinball is so vital to the gaming community.

Image by Lori Glumac for WormholeRiders News Agency

Stern Pinball has a program call the Stern Heads-Up Pinball Invitational which is a competitive show that is available to watch on YouTube for the competitive pinball players. He mentioned that there is the Godzilla pinball being released very soon. There were two rooms dedicated to these incredible pinball machines at the Marriott Marquis. Entering the room was fun and all you could see were the fans playing the machines like Deadpool, Jurassic Park and one of the newest music ones Rush. There was a big Godzilla figure in the room as the hint of what is to come from Stern.

Being a global company that ships all over the world, “when we obtain a license, it must be known all over the world, everywhere. From Australia, to here in the States, to Europe, South America.” Jody stressed that the license being global and widely known makes for a good game. With games like The Mandalorian (video below) with a small Grogu and his force wielding powers or Godzilla there are good guys and bad guys, battles, etc., which makes for a fun game. You want to combine a really A+ title, with fun and that is a winning success. The do have different genres as well, sci-fi, music, retro, tv shows, cultural zeitgeist such as The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things. He mentioned that he is always thinking about what the next one is. He had mentioned the television show The Boys, who knows that will be in the works soon, fingers crossed.

When I asked Jody what his favorite pinball machine was growing up, he mentioned that his grandfather owned an arcade (how perfect) in Tucson, Arizona and he would spend a lot of time there when he was little. He remembers that when nighttime came the older kids would come in, “with their mustaches and long hair, smoking cigarettes,” they would play the pinball machines. He did mention some of the older games that he wished he were exposed to like Flash Gordon, because he loved that movie (I mean who does not love it?). For the time, the Flash Gordon game was an innovative, neat game to have around, made cool sounds and was just very nostalgic for him. I can totally relate to what Jody is saying, it is those nostalgic games, movies, television shows that need to be revived for the simple fact that they will always be cool. It is also another way for the current generation to be exposed to those iconic movies, shows and pop culture of that era. He mentioned that one game he would love to have been the Robocop game. There is one at Logan Arcade in Chicago, so if you are in the Chicago area and want to experience what it is like to be Robocop, stop on by.

I asked Jody out of the current ones that are out right now which one is his favorite. He mentioned that he “comes from the music business and my heart and soul is really into music” two bands he mentioned were Iron Maiden and Metallica. Between those two powerhouse mega metal groups Metallica is his favorite. The music inspired games from Led Zeppelin and Rush, two of the most iconic and beloved bands in the world, held a bit of fond memories for him. Jody remembers his father showing him those albums and listening to the music while sitting on the floor of his home, and now he gets to collaborate with them, talk about dream come true!

My last question was a bit of a mystery, and I am okay with that. I asked him what would be his “dream themed game.” He said that “people that know me, know the answer to that question, he couldn’t reveal the answer” because well…I will leave it at that. They are working on his dream theme; he could only tell me that it is retro and something from his childhood. I am looking forward to seeing what incredible theme Stern has coming down the pipeline. It is something “dear to his heart, he is really excited about it,” since Jody and I are of the same generation, I am also excited to see what that new dream theme machine that is coming.

This interview was so much fun, and I learned a lot about a game that I grew up with and dearly love. I want to thank Jody Dankberg and Stern Pinball for giving me this very cool and fun interview to start off my Comic-Con 2022 adventure.
