This latest episode of Debris is a good one!

It is full of new mysteries and some ancient ones that have been speculated for centuries by human kind.

Eagle Eglisson is the director of this episode and he is no stranger to genres like this one.

Mr. Eglisson has directed some of my favorite shows, Fringe, Alcatraz, Once Upon A Time and TURN: Washington’s Spies (I highly recommend and is currently available on Netflix), just to name a few.

Eglisson does a good job at giving us a glimpse into the psyche of a soldier and what war does to people on both sides in an episode written by Ryan A. Wagner who has written two other episodes, “Do You Know Icarus” and “In Universe“. I am also looking forward to exploring more about this type of subject matter, hopefully in later episodes.

Asalah follows “I Am Icarus”, the second part of a superb two part episode that began with “Do You Know Icarus?”, where the fabric of the universe is unwinding or is inadvertently being ripped apart by a young man named Shelby (Keenan Tracey) and his sister Kathleen (Jessica McLeod).

Shelby and Kathleen witnessed an alien object land in the ocean near their home. Shelby and Kathleen then unwisely elected to investigate the Debris, setting in motion a series of unintended consequences with nearly devastating results to our reality!

The scene opens with a woman sitting in the middle of a forest with the Debris obviously not too far away from her. As the Orbital agent approaches, she says Bryan’s (Jonathan Tucker) name two times. Michael Wale is the director of photography for this episode he did such episodes as Fringe, Smallville and Almost Human so he is another one who is familiar with this genre. Also, it seems that J.H. Wyman likes working with the same people over and over again which is always a plus because they are familiar with his work and know how to capture it best.

We come to find out the woman’s name is Mariel Caldwell (Erin Karpluk) from Cedar Ville Maryland and the Debris followed her like a shimmer. She was a high school teacher with no other extraordinary background, just an ordinary person.

Once Mariel arrives at the facility and Bryan confronts her, she starts talking about Surobi, Afghanistan, a brown paper folder and dust everywhere. As the viewer we know and remember that Bryan Beneventi was a Marine Special Forces in Afghanistan. So of course, hearing all of this piques our interest knowing that there has always been something in Bryan’s past from that time in his life that we have always been curious about.

In an earlier episode there was a picture of a woman that Bryan has kept with him and prior to this episode we did not know who that woman was. Tonight, we do as the title of the episode suggests her name is Asalah (Zarina Sterling). It was great to finally get a reason for that picture and what the story behind it was.

Debris S1x11 Mariel Caldwell knows secrets of Bryan's past
Erin Karpluck as Mariel Caldwell, Jonathan Tucker as Bryan Beneventi, Riann Steele as Finola Jones. Image by James Dittiger, courtesy NBC

As the episode progresses Mariel is away from the alien object, her recollection of the situation and Afghanistan keeps coming and she keeps telling Bryan more and more, only things that are specific to him and his experience.

It is interesting to hear that story from that part of the world. Often times when we see or hear war stories, we forget there are two sides and experiences to it, the innocent civilians, and the soldiers. One of my favorite quotes is from the movie Platoon by Oliver Stone and that quote is “the first casualty of war is innocence.”

The lab determined that even away from the Debris Mariel still recites part of Bryan’s life back to him. So, the debris has somehow manifested in her consciousness or maybe merged somehow with Bryan’s and because she came in contact with the debris it implanted his memories into her, and she almost became a carbon copy mentally of his brain.

During the scene where Mariel recites once again parts of Bryan’s life back to him, she grabs him by the arm. With this interaction with Mariel, Bryan passes out almost as if her energy or the memories, his memories are transported back to him with such force that it knocks him unconscious.

Next, we get to see Bryan interacting with his fellow soldiers as well as his commanding officer played by Josh Blacker. The Bryan that we see in Afghanistan is not anywhere close to the one that we see today as an Orbital agent.

Finola (Riann Steele) panics once Bryan passes out and he is immediately helped by the doctor on duty.

The doctor informs Finola that he is going through an idiopathic neurological event which I looked up. It is nerve damage that is also related to PTSD.

That makes perfect sense considering that Bryan’s experience in Afghanistan has directly contributed to that and the condition called TBI (traumatic brain injury) may occur under severe stress such as military combat.

Debris S1x11 Asalah portrayed by Zarina Sterling
Asalah portrayed by Zarina Sterling. Image courtesy NBC

We do get to see Asalah for the first time and see her interactions with Bryan, it is clear that from their first meeting that they had a connection.

Not only is Asalah a beautiful woman but someone who has hope and dreams and wants to leave Afghanistan to have a better life for herself. That appeals to Bryan, Asalah talks about music and wanting to be a pianist, “Music is food for the soul”. Bryan then tells her about Elton John and pulls out his headphones and gives them to her so she can listen to Bennie and The Jets.

The other person concerned about Bryan and his condition and what Mariel is talking about is Maddox (Norbert Leo Butz). Mariel keeps repeating events that happen in Afghanistan and one in particular comes up called Desert Falcon. Maddox knows what she is talking about it is definitely significant to him regarding something about the Taliban. Which is the whole point of why Bryan is there and what the mission that he is on.

There has always been something a little vague and shady about Maddox and his involvement in Orbital as well. I have often thought he has many secrets about Bryan and what happened in Afghanistan and can hold that against him. So, it is almost as if Bryan owes him a debt.

The one thing that stood out to me especially with this episode is about what happens in specific countries, for example Afghanistan, and during World War II, is how the innocents and art are are always affected by war. How during World War II the Nazis had taken possession of art in the countries that they were conquering. And basically, stole millions and millions of dollars of precious artworks, precious music even musicians from that period of time.

They did not want any kind of freedom of thought, did not want any kind of salvation or happiness to happen in those countries. I assume that the same happened in Afghanistan that being a musician or having any kind of artistic creativity or artistic inclination is a bad thing. The arts are so often underfunded around war torn countries that the sometimes the only solace you have is in the arts, is in dance or music or painting or acting whatever it maybe it is a salvation for a lot of people.

Debris S1x11 Bryan finds the camera with Taliban locations

“Sometimes good intentions go awry” that in this episode is absolutely for sure. “Peace is possible-always”, we will have to see if that ever happens. Asalah asks Bryan to keep her grandfather safe.

Bryan, being the upstanding soldier that he is and the compassionate person he is, promises her but asks her to please stay out of it. Although Asalah promises to stay out of the situation that does not happen.

We come to find out that she actually took pictures of the Taliban and specifically, the place to find them. She disguises it as she found Bryan’s camera lying in the street and came to return it to him.

Meanwhile Finola thinks that the debris had cloned Bryan in Pennsylvania and that is what is causing this neurological episode since the clone was the one that had the picture of Asalah in his pocket.

Debris S1x11 Finola believes the Debris can transfer and manipulate memories
Finola believes the Debris can transfer and manipulate memories. Image courtesy NBC

The pieces of Debris could be talking to each other, meaning that Bryan’s memory could have been uploaded or backed up supposedly to a network like an Internet cloud. Another theory is, it could also be a living thing an entity that our world and our technology has no power over or no way to control it. The alien objects appear to have capabilities to manipulate memories maybe even alter reality. If this particular piece of Debris gets into the wrong hands, it can be used as a psychological warfare weapon.

Finola suggests possibly rebooting the brain that might hopefully help disrupt the connection between the alien artifacts and Bryan. That suggestion is actually a particularly good idea considering that the body has its own electrical system. It has been shown that when the body experiences a large electrical charge (such as being struck by lightning or electrocuted) electrical charges altered states of mind, altered intelligence.

One of the other causes may be the injections that Bryan has been taking since returning back from Afghanistan and Maddox wants to up the dosage. My theory about that is if anything I think that these injections are doing more harm than good, I think almost it is like a tool to keep the soldiers subversive.

Debris S1x11 Bryan is transported back to the battlefield
Jonathan Tucker as Bryan Beneventi is transported back to the battlefield by the Debris. Image by James Dittiger, courtesy NBC

As the pinnacle of the episode unfolds, we find that Bryan tells Asalah to disappear, and he will find her later. Earlier in the conversation they were talking about hope and that she has hope and he needs to protect that. Asalah asks Bryan what the hope is he is holding onto and he does not answer which is very typical of his character.

Bryan is someone who keeps his feelings awfully close to the vest. He does not like to show emotion too much or to too many there are a select few who have been privy to that. But with his war experience you tend to not let that show as it is a sign of weakness in most cases.

Next, we see Bryan transported back to combat at a firefight that happens unfortunately Asalah turns out dead in the village. Bryan broke his promise to her and that guilt of her dying is carried with him.

Bryan was subjected to electro-shock therapy to break the tie to the alien object controlling him. We then find out that Mariel is dead as well almost as if she had manifested Asalah and what happened to her. Asalah was worried that Brian would think that she betrayed him she came back to the village to warn him about what was about to happen.

    Debris S1x11 Bryan get electro-shocked
Bryan electro-shocked. Image by James Dittiger, courtesy NBC

Bryan took revenge for a Asalah’s death as he came upon a group of Taliban he found in a cave. Unfortunately, those were different insurgents, and they were not to be touched because of them being a CIA protected group for a CIA operation.

Bryan ended up going to prison because of it. Maddox got him out of prison and thus Bryan owes Maddox his life literally.

“I don’t carry this so that I can remember her, I carry it so that I don’t forget what it’s like to invest in something that I can lose” Bryan tells Finola about Asalah and his reasoning. He also mentions that all of the alien objects may be somehow connected. “The Debris is experiencing us the same way we are experiencing it.”

However, we still cannot figure out why Bryan is the only person the Debris deliberately sought out… yet!

Debris S1x11 Dahkeya Nakai portrayed by Julian Black Antelope in Sedona Arizona

The last few minutes of this episode are probably my favorite of the entire episode. Sedona, AZ a man, Dahkeya Nakai (Julian Black Antelope) is walking out in the desert. A voice over starts to tell us “It all began when Blackwater grandfather threw his energy to the four directions. To the East he laid black metal in the earth, the South blue metal, to the West yellow metal and to the North white metal. In the next phase Blackwater grandfather threw black wind towards the earth”.

First off, I am incredibly happy that they cast a First Nations actor to play the indigenous man. As a huge fan of the TV series Ancient Aliens there have been many episodes about this last part of the episode, my favorite part of the episode.

Many indigenous or First Nation tribes in Canada as well as the United States have believed for centuries in Star people or what we would call aliens. There have been many stories handed down generation to generation about those star people about the ways that they have taught indigenous and First Nation tribes. Their knowledge, their way of life, there have been many tribes that believe their origins started with the Star people.

Debris S1x11 Click to visit the First Nations Institute
Click to visit the First Nations Institute. Image courtesy First Nations Institute

I have always been fascinated with these folklore type of stories. The First Nations have knowledge, they have spirituality, they understand that part of human nature. As well as nature itself which they learned from star people.

Also, through indigenous populations scattered throughout Canada as well as North America we find that there are certain places in the country or the world that do have energy that is different than any other place. That could be spiritual energy, it could be electrical energy, electrical currents or it could be something we do not know.

One such place that I know of is Nazca, Peru, and the famous Nazca lines. The energy in that area of the world is definitely different than other parts and in Sedona, AZ that is the case as well. There has been much speculation about the spirituality of that place the energy physical and mental energy of that place. In Sedona there is a long history of strange events happening, so it is no surprise that this is where they ended the episode. I hope we can explore more about that subject.

    Ancient Aliens S12

Places like Sedona, Nazca, Egypt, and many parts of Central and South America as well as parts of the United States that have these electrical anomalies are the prominent in UFO sightings. Places around the world that have been associated with anomalies that have been always attributed with Aliens or unexplained mysteries. I have been and always will be fascinated by the ancient tales that the indigenous people of our country will tell. It is something fascinating and I have always had a great respect for.

I hope you enjoyed this episode as much as I did! It was great to finally get a little bit of answers to the question or mystery of Bryan Beneventi.

I am a full-time student at the Academy of Acting, and it seems like tonight Wednesday February 09, 2011 is the first night I’ve had to myself, away from my studies…other than of course having the assignment of lifting a frying pan to see how it affects my muscles, then miming it to play with my arm muscle’s memories.

Stargate Universe - SGU season two wide banner

But enough with the acting technobabble, let’s get on with the campaign updates and other Stargate-related news that might be New SyFy Logo Chain Linksout there. Recently there was a Stargate Universe marathon on Syfy network, and from what I understand, the ratings were good enough to justify doing a standard run-out of the second season.

I am hoping that will lead to continuing on the Stargate Universe storyline. Recent word from Jospeh Mallaozzi is that he and Paul Mullie are heading to the Los Angeles area on a mission. Lets all wish them them the best of luck!

The first one is a reminder about the “Share The SGU Love” and “Spread the SGU Love” campaign, to send the powers-that-be Click to visit the fabled MGM Studios on Twitter!both stateside at the MGM Studios offices and the Bridge Studios offices located in Burnaby, British Columbia a Valentines Day card! I will admit, I have my cards made and will be sending them off Friday.

Hey, I don’t know about you, but I don’t mind getting a Valentines’ card or two (or more) after Valentines’ Day, I always consider it lovely that someone was thinking of me in a kind and loving manner. Remember to mention that you love the series, why you love it, any stories you might be able to tell in your cards, and where you are located. Perhaps include your age as well in case you want to help MGM see the demographics. Click here to see all the great cards.

And speaking of Valentines’ Day, there is a campaign that will be taking place ON Valentines’ Day itself. As iTunes is still selling episodes of Stargate Universe in their on-line store, the plan is for as many SGU fans to buy the episode “Trial and Error”, the episode where Eli and Ginn share their first kiss (insert group “awwwww” here). Please feel free to buy other episodes as well!

A group action that has been taking place is the creation of a graphic collage celebrating Stargate Universe, with the man behind that being Gcm4n (Mario on Twitter). He is accepting graphics (as in digital pictures) fans want to include in the final huge image. Contact him on Twitter for more details.Click to visit and follow Gcm4n (Mario) on Twitter!

The biggest news, however, has been a unification of the majority of the campaigns. Look for more details at SGUnite once the site is fully up and running. As is, the webmaster has created a Facebook feed on the front page of the website where news about Stargate Universe current state is being listed, such as the fact when SGU season two returns to SyFy on March 07, 2011 on Monday nights.

There is also a place on the page where people can insert their e-mail address so once the website is up and running, as the webmaster of the site has been otherwise occupied with schooling and also, flooding in his area of Australia. Much love to you as things get cleaned up down there!

His tweets about the experience make many of us aspiring actors green with envy and also, makes us realize the extremes some projects will take a person, as he has described in his tweets about the very cold weather in some locations, and contrastingly hot weather in others.

I can barely wait for that one to come out, but to be honest, am hoping that more Stargate Universe comes out beyond the second season as I love the series and want to see more of it, and certainly more of Brian and company in action as our favorite refugee crew in a ginourmous spaceship hopping through galaxies!Riese Series - Kingdom Falling on Space Channel!

Another project which would be remiss of me to mention is the web-series Riese. Filmed in Vancouver, its cast includes Patrick Gilmore (Dale Volker of SGU) as well as featuring Amanda Tapping as a narrator.

Click to visit and follow Patrick Gilmore on Twitter! It is a futuristic steam-punk series, and the best news of all is, the entire web-series will be aired as one episode on the Space Channel in Canada, April 09, 2011 at 9 pm right after the Merlin season finale! This just goes to show the power of the internet, and also, the power of on-line love and determination.

Although not directly related to Stargate Universe, I did promise a friend and classmate of mine to mention a web-series that is being created here in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Pieces is a sci-fi/fantasy mystery thriller with a lot of promise, and who knows, it might follow in the footsteps of other pioneering Canadian web-series (such as Riese and Jpod).

In the future this series could potentially have the following of other science fiction series that have been filmed in Canada, such as X-Files, Fringe, the whole Stargate franchise…well, you get my drift. I promised I’d mention it in my blog, and give the good word to the ‘Peg City, so there you go!

So in summary: Please send out your Valentines’ Day cards to the Bridge and to MGM Studios, buy “Trial and Error” on iTunes this Valentines’ Day, donate some images for the collage, add your name to the mailing list at sgunite.com, check out Make a Movie Like Spike (and perhaps request it at your local indy theatre), and just keep being aweseome!

But I should really get back to my homework, I need to learn how to lift an invisible frying pan by using my own as a model, so until later, keep on Spreading and Sharing the SGU Love, and have a great weekend!

  • An Interview with Josh Blacker of SGU, Human Target, V Series

An Interview with Josh Blacker of SGU, Human Target, V Series

SGU Banner - Click to learn more at MGM Studios!

    Fellow fans,

As some of you will remember, I recently interviewed Josh Blacker of, most recently, Stargate: Universe, Human Target, and V. In the course of the interview Josh and I talked about everything from how he first got into acting – a rather circuitous and interesting journey – to his thoughts on Sgt. Spencer (of SGU) to some of his plans for the future.

A short aside for some random trivia: we filmed the interview in the Rose Garden out at UBC (University of British Columbia), which is where a scene from the SGU episode Human was filmed.

I found it fascinating to hear Josh’s thoughts on Sgt. Spencer and how he had created his own idea of what Spencer’s past was like. Interestingly enough, Sgt. Spencer didn’t actually exist when Josh first auditioned and was written specifically for him by the Powers that Be on Stargate. Spencer was not actually Josh’s first foray into the franchise: he had a role on Atlantis, and he was a fan of SG-1.

Both Josh and I are hoping that at some future point he will get to reprise his role as Sgt. Spencer, perhaps through flashbacks. When asked if there was anyone in particular with whom he would like to work, Josh pretty much listed the entire cast – just goes to show how much respect the cast has for one another, and I think that comes through in the interview.

In the course of the interview we also discussed some of Josh’s favourite television shows (he has a lot of them), and what it was like to work on Human Target. Apparently Jackie Earle Haley is one of the nicest guys Josh has ever met in the business and the great dynamics between the three main cast members – Mr. Haley, Chi McBride, and Mark Valley – is just as evident off screen as on.

Most likely shocking to no-one, Fringe also came up in the discussion; however, this time I was not the one to bring it up – Josh himself is a big fan and hopes to work on the show next season. I thought it was great that Josh’s favourite episode from season 2 was Northwest Passage (a favourite of mine as well), guest starring Josh’s SGU cast mate Patrick Gilmore.

Aside from upcoming shows, Josh is also putting together a webisode series focusing on the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) when they were first established. I, for one, can’t wait to see the finished product.

Before Josh’s interview I put out an invitation on Twitter for people to send in any questions they may have for Josh which I could pose to him during the interview:

apndrgn: Do you find the strong Vancouver acting community limits your options as far as roles? Are you considered a “sci fi” guy?

FrithMcCOBrien: What inspired you to get into acting? What was your first job that told you “yeah, I’m an actor”?

punslingerr: What was it like having an episode [of SGU] centred around your character when you didn’t even appear in most of it?

WormholeRiders: In Human Target your character didn’t die… Any chance you’ll return next season?

Stargate Universe: “Human” – Review and Analysis – Focus: Stargate Mythology

    Hey Stargate Universe Fans!

Click to visit SGU on SyFy

    Cllick to visit NBC Universal!

SGU S1x14 ‘Human’ is simply another outstanding episode in an epic saga of our age. With the tale in ‘Human’ all should by now definitely see the direction that Stargate Universe has been on all along in the “Road Taken”. All along it  has been quite clear, and all Stargate fans should by now envision it as well. At least we at WHR hope that you do.

Click to visit Stargate on MGM Dot Com!This is a full review with analysis so if you have not seen Stargate Universe “Human”, stop reading now. You have been advised. The WHR grade for Stargate Universe “Human”? An “A PLUS“. Read on and you will find out why.

Of interest is the fact that we are going to mix series with a cross-over discussion including an 18 year old video news clip that is auto playing (in the background). The WHR team has discussed these subjects at great length and strongly suggests that you watch and listen, several times. Thank you.

As reported in our post air date review from last week, the mythology in Stargate Universe returned in ‘Faith’ with the Obelisk sequences on the lush green planet. You will see and we will all learn much more about that in future episodes. Of that there is no doubt.

Stargate Universe episode 14 “Human” starts with a flash back of Dr. Rush gazing longingly at a beautiful woman. Do you know who the actress is? Is this a dream or is it real? It is both. Analysis on both a bit later as you will see when you read our theory on all of this and why it is critical to the plot line expanding in the future.

As we start the fantastic episode which is “Human”, we witness Dr. Rush in his bedroom looking longingly at his wife Gloria. It is at this point the “dream” sequence begins. But it is no dream. Instead it is a flashback which Dr. Rush and Dr. Brody are responsible for by tweaking the Ancient Chair technology on Destiny. Here we begin the back story filling in how the evil Lucian Alliance found Icarus base as seen and destroyed in the pilot episodes.

Next we are in the kitchen and we begin to understand the nature of Gloria Rush’s illness. It may seem subtle, but Louise Lombard ‘forgets’ where she has placed her glasses. Dr. Rush knowingly and off-handedly tells her. Coffee is brewing and we see a look of anguish on his face as he senses she is fading from humanity. Dr. Rush retires to his study and we get a look into the intensity of his character where what appears to be thousands of post it notes that are plastered all over virtually every square inch of the walls there. The set layout was a bit brilliant and beautiful, pun intended. The set design was much like that of Russell Crowe in his academy award winning performance from the movie ”A Beautiful Mind”. Very fitting to marry Dr. Rush (by visual metaphor) since we all know that Dr. Rush is indeed “brilliant” and perhaps beautiful, just like the real life character portrayed by Russell Crowe.

SGU S1x14 Human - Louise Lombard as Gloria Rush

In the meantime, the fans of the Stargate franchise will experience a real treat with special guest stars including Louise Lombard (CSI – Miami Medical) as Mrs. Gloria Rush, Dr. Rush’s wife, Suleka Mathew (Stargate SG-1 – Battlestar Galactica) as a student at the university,  Haig Sutherland (displayed later) in his recurring role as Sgt. Hunter Riley (Dead Like Me – Smallville), and Chad Krowchuk as the blond student in the classroom. Chad was first seen by Stargate fans as “Gordie Lowe ” in the Stargate SG-1 episode “Citizen Joe”. You remember, the kid with the broom in the barber shop!

SGU S1x14 Human - Kristian Arye as Dr. Rush's student

SGU S1x14 Human - Suleka Mattew as aide with Dr. Rush

Last but not least we witness the the return of a Stargate legend, Michael Shanks as the unforgettable and beloved  Dr. Daniel Jackson! Shanks as he is often referred to has starred in over 200 episodes of Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate Continuum! Stay tuned folks, you will see Dr. Jackson again this year in the Stargate Universe episode “Subversion“. Never we we ever get enough of Michael Shanks as Dr. Jackson, never. Once again this supremely talented actor delights Stargate fans the world over  in the Stargate Universe episode “Human”.

SGU S1x14 Human - Michael Shanks as Dr. Daniel Jackson

SGU S1x14 Human - Doctors Rush and Daniel Jackson

SGU S1x14 Human - Doctors Rush and Daniel Jackson

Written by Jeff Vlaming, ‘Human’ is a special episode which fills in much of the back story about Dr. Rush when he and Dr. Brody (Peter Kelamis) experiment on the Destiny with the Ancient Chair. Caught in the act by Col. Young (Louis Ferreira aka Justin Louis) who calls in TJ to diagnose the situation.

SGU S1x14 Human - Louis Ferreira also looks concerned

Rush has obviously and quite deliberately set up a new experiment to gain access to the Ancient Knowledge he so desperately has been seeking from the earliest plot lines in Stargate Universe. Both Brody and TJ know that disconnecting Rush may prove fatal. TJ (Alaina Huffman) and Dr. Brody monitors Dr. Rush as Eli looks on knowing that data from the chair is flowing into his mind. Col. Young asks what it is Rush is experiencing. Dr. Body admits he “cannot even venture a guess”.

SGU S1x14 Human - Rush and Peter Kelamis as Dr. Brody

SGU S1x14 Human - David Blue as Eli looks concerned

What I enjoyed is how the writers weave the real life pregnancy of the then lovely mother to be Alaina Huffman into the story. Alaina as TJ is always a delight to behold for a simple reason. She is a highly gifted actress capable of blending the real her into her portrayal of TJ. It goes without saying that this is the mark of a great actor or actress because as anyone with knowledge of acting knows, melding the written character with the real person is critical. Peter also has these skills. Well done Peter and Alaina. Very well done.

SGU S1x14 Human - Alaina Huffman examines Rush

Before continuing, let us examine the character analysis with regard to Col. Young. Those who have studied this actor know that he is a light hearted individual filled with humor and joy.  His acting skills come to the forefront because of his eloquently different characterization from his real life persona. This too is the mark of a fine actor. Great job Louis!

SGU S1x14 Human - Louis Ferreira as Col. Young

During these sequences with Robert Carlyle we observe the heart rending scenes with his wife to the music of “Vissi d’Arte” from Puccini’s Tosca we first heard in the Stargate Universe pilot episode “Air”. Gloria Rush is dying and the return on this music evokes memories from the eloquent artistry that is Stargate Universe.

SGU S1x14 Human - Gloria Rush in her last hours

Speaking of which, as you may recall in the pilot episode “Air’, Dr. Rush is seen crying to his wife’s picture after taking a Styrofoam dinner prepared by J Bower Chapman back to back to his room shortly before the Icarus Base comes under attack.  These initial scenes caused many to feel emotions for Robert Carlyle’s portrayal of Dr. Rush. Until the fourteenth episode many fans have not done much but recall that Dr. Rush is driven to what appears to be evil machinations in his quest to control Destiny with his partner in crime Camile Wray played by the great actress MingNa.

MingNa is one of my favorite actresses, however I was disappointed not to see her in the broadcast of Stargate Universe “Human” on April 23, 2010 in the United States. Sadly, fans of MingNa will have to wait two long weeks before we see her return in “Sabotage” on May 07, 2010 and then“Pain”, the episode that will air on May 13, 2010. We know she will return in season two, but I was hoping the film research credits were wrong.  We look forward to seeing you in the future again MingNa!

SGU S1x13 Faith - MinggNa as Camile Wray. A fav of mine!

The answer to the Lucian Alliance is disclosed to Dr. Rush by the great Dr. Jackson. This effectively wraps the story arc back to when Amanda Tapping as Col. Carter asks in “Air” how they found the Icarus planet. There you have it and now you know!

As we continue we see a cool special effects sequence much like the flash sequences from “Chuck”, “The Matrix“, and “A Brilliant Mind” as Dr. Rush is reflecting in a classroom setting thinking about the equation needed for the previously elusive ninth chevron. In the classroom there are several other extra’s we have seen before in Stargate. Did you recognize them? One very notable example is the young man from Stargate SG-1 “Citizen Joe” shown above.  We will have a quiz later so you can catch up. Dr. Rush has  the “flashes” is a several sequences. Obviously something is happening related to the Ancient Chair.

SGU S1x14 Human - Dr. Rush's Matrix Chuck like flash

SGU S1x14 Human - Dr. Rush's Matrix like flashes again

SGU S1x14 Human - Dr. Jackson shares with Dr. Rush

Suddenly, Michael Shanks aka Dr. Daniel Jackson appears in the classroom then again at the home of Dr. Rush as he rants about the class and no one “getting it”. Dr. Rush is referring to the previous discussion regarding hidden encryption in the Ancient Equation. Rush needs to figure out not only how to activate the ninth chevron, this is a gateway to figuring out how to control Destiny! During the episode doctors Rush and Jackson discuss their wives. Dr. Jackson remarks about his wife Sha’re lost to Apophis and the impending fate of Dr. Rush’s wife Gloria.

SGU S1x14 Human - Col. Young with Patrick Gilmore as Volker

On board Destiny the ship comes out of FTL with Patrick Gilmore and Col. Young at the controls. Sgt. Greer and Lt. Scott prepare for an away team to the planet.

SGU S1x14 Human - Greer and Lt. Scott ready away team

We then observe Chloe and Eli (DavidBlue) . Chloe (Elyse Levesque) comes over to Eli and is obviously feeling guilt for her role in the failed insurrection attempt by the civilians.  It is obvious by Eli’s flippant response that he has not really forgiven Chloe for not confiding in him, for betraying Lt. Scott and going along with the failed scheme.

SGU S1x14 Human - Elyse Levesque as Chloe with Eli

SGU S1x14 Human - David Blue as Eli with Chloe

A bit later we see Chloe in a military outfit as she is selected for the away mission to a planet reminiscent of several episodes of Stargate SG-1 notably “Lost Planet”. It was nice to see Chloe contribute and see her in camo BDU’s. With a 225 year history of having family in the military, I always love seeing a talented lady in uniform!

SGU S1x14 Human - Elyse Levesque in camo BDUs

Here the mythology of Stargate looks us starkly in the face from Stargate Universe. This reviewer is convinced if only the people who “do not get it” with Stargate Universe would take their blinders off, they would be able to envision where the creative genius of Mallozzi, Cooper and Wright are taking us in this latest incarnation of Stargate. Oh well. As I mentioned in several previous reviews about Stargate Universe, some people have long forgotten how long it took to weave the pattern that was revealed in Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. Remember people that great things take time. On the planet scattered with Ancient ruins, the mythology becomes self evident as the away team begins to explore the ruins.

SGU S1x14 Human - Exploring the Ancient ruins

SGU S1x14 Human - Exploring the Ancient ruins wide angle

SGU S1x14 Human - Exploring the ruins

A geeky moment is experienced by Chloe while she is on away team. It clearly shows the character is brilliant. Some have criticized the characterization of Chloe by the writers, but we must point out that you missed it. The Chloe character was originally described as a highly educated individual. Some have identified her as a damsel in distress.Wrong!

SGU S1x14 Human - Elyse Levesque Geeky in camo BDUs

Well folks, this was deliberate misdirection in the opinion of this reviewer. You were supposed to be taken left, when in fact Elyse was preparing all the while under the direction of the episodes writer that she would go “right”. Simply another example of the excellence of the character development by the Stargate Universe creators!

Next up worth reflecting on shortly after, we see Dr. Rush in his Ancient Chair “dreaming’ as he is monitored by TJ and Dr. Brody. In his dream Dr. Rush is discussing the significant nature of numbers so crucial to his quest.

SGU S1x14 Human - Dreaming in the Ancient Chair

As all Stargate fans know, such things as Ancient Codes have been relevant for a very long time in Stargate. To the journey Dr. Rush has undertaken to flesh out the secrets of Destiny, the numbers are critical. A bit later, Dr. Jackson makes a totally hilarious comment on the number “42” from “The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy”. Most appropriate. As they continue Rush keeps seeing the number 46 everywhere he looks within the dream.  We will revisit the significant nature of the number 46 near the end of this review.

SGU S1x14 Human - Dreaming of numbers

One of the most enjoyable sequences is that in which Eli “loses” a Kino in the underground tomb while undertaking standard procedure to investigate the nature of the find on the planet that Destiny has brought them to. These is a very humorous sequence with Brian J. Smith when Lt. Scott says “You lost a Kino”.  As I have stated many times both of these actors are outstanding in their portrayals. For anyone who takes a moment to see the depth of their characters, you will see their genius.

Eli tries to recover from the “Kino Loss” with one of his famous comedic ‘back at you” type of comments. He explains that  “I took a wrong turn”. Poor Eli! Lt. Scott is not impressed and this forces the team to enter the underground tomb to investigate the old fashioned way as seen most often in Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis. It is all here Stargate fans, just like the olden days. Truly enjoyable is the double take from the entire away team and by Sgt. Greer. It is a “say what” moment with a nod as he removes his sunglasses. Great stuff from Jamil Walker Smith as he always is.  Not only extremely talented, Jamil is rather a handsome devil according to my lady friends! They are quite correct in their assessment.

SGU S1x14 Human - Chloe looking at Eli

SGU S1x14 Human - Lt. Scott not buying Eli Kino loss

SGU S1x14 Human - Sgt. Greer double take on Eli Kino loss
I must agree in this regard, Greer rocks! Although I must reiterate that I do favor the ladies. Specifically MingNa, Elyse Levesque, Julia Benson, Jennifer Spence, and the then mother to be Alaina do a simply wonderful job in Stargate Universe! It’s a guy thing.

As the away team soon finds out, disaster awaits. We observe huge spider webs that bring back memories of the Lord of the Rings and Shelob. On Twitter one astute friend immediately picked up on the reference the second it happened. I must admit that I did not get it until that comment by DannysGirlSG1 (Pip) was made. I simply saw spider webs! What is it? Why of course a perfect “Shelob” from LOTR! During the encounter, Sgt. Greer fires at the ugly creature and the away team finds itself trapped. Can anyone say “The Tomb” from Stargate SG-1?

SGU S1x14 Human - Exploring the tomb

SGU S1x14 Human - Exploring the tomb further

SGU S1x14 Human - Shelob the spider

It was right then and there as Sgt. Greer spots the huge spider and fires to save Chloe is when disaster strikes! Two things in the story immediately became apparent as Sgt. Greer kills Shelob and the roof caves in, literally trapping the away team in the tomb.

SGU S1x14 Human - Sgt. Greer sees Shelob

SGU S1x14 Human - Sgt. Greer fires & the team is trapped

First this will be a two part episode in the fine tradition from the creators at Bridge Studios and franchise owner MGM Studios. Second regards the subject of mythology of Stargate which has been a hallmark since the very earliest days of SG-1. Caves and tombs have long been the subject of archeology and this reviewer is certain that the team will find something Ancient in the tomb system. But not within this episode my friends, you will need to be patient. and simply have to tune in next week to witness the wonder for yourselves.

Now while some who have an axe to grind against Stargate Universe may complain about the similarity to “The Tomb” or the caves in England where the Ori saga begins, WHR asks that you bury the hatchet and get with the program for goodness sakes. Something wonderful is unfolding here and everyone needs to put everything Stargate into its proper place.

Back a touch in the time-line a bit, we then segue in ‘Human’ to where the second song featured. It is ‘English Rose’ by The Jam. A truly beautiful song that leads us back to Michael Shanks finding Dr. Rush asleep on the couch dreaming of more pleasant memories. It is here the initial numbers of (46) significance are discussed. These will play a important role in the closing moments of “Human” as Dr. Rush will experience an epiphany of a religious nature He knows that it is Gloria’s last day alive. Several touching memories and scenes unfold in flash back style as the reality of his life hits him squarely.

SGU S1x14 Human - Dr. Rush flashes on Gloria

SGU S1x14 Human - In the church near Gloria's end

As the Destiny sends a second away team to rescue the trapped members, we witness a very touching set of moments with Louis Lombard and Robert Carlyle in her death. Both of these actors are a joy to behold. I suggest you watch this sequence several times to observe the artistry and Single Effect of the Dr. Rush character. The answers are here people for all to enjoy. Please remember that although different, Stargate Universe is Stargate. It is that pure and is that simple.

SGU S1x14 Human - Haig Sutherland as Sgt. Riley

SGU S1x14 Human - Col. Young at the Gate

SGU S1x14 Human - Julia Benson Lt. James 2nd away rescue team

SGU S1x14 Human - Dale Volker & Lt. James. Out of time

Despite the fact that Stargate Universe is what people asked for many years, more depth and more Stargate mythology, some are still dumbfounded. Well as the mythology in the tomb on the planet is revealed, and as we witness Doctors Jackson and Rush work on the equations to extract the Ancient code, all but a very few will “get the message”. Much like the old movie “Support Your Local Sheriff” with James Garner, all Stargate fans should “Support Their Local Stargate” if you want to see Stargate continue, and Atlantis and SG-1 return in “Extinction” and “Revolution”, work together just like Doctors Rush and Jackson have done as illustrated below.

SGU S1x14 Human - Daniel Jackson in a brilliant mind

SGU S1x14 Human -Doctors Rush & Jackson working together

Now before completing this review, we will touch upon to a couple of subjects that may be considered controversial. If WHR loses followers who take offense, our sincere apologies are offered in advance. Thank you for your consideration and your professional courtesy in this regard. Just as Dr. Rush and Dr. Daniel Jackson learned to do in the “Ancient Dream”, so must we all.

SGU S1x14 Human - Daniel Jackson & Rush contemplate together

WHR enters this next aspect of analysis and discussion with complete respect for all parties involved. Our team requests that everyone engage in a little introspection about their own behaviors. Take a look in the mirror and see if you are the one that “cast the first stone”, the second, or even the third. Constructive criticism is one thing, but “throwing stones” at perceived adversaries in a non introspective manner is just plain wrong.

First, let us have a little discussion about the legendary MGM Studios. WHR keeps abreast of all such developments, but has no “skin in the game” financially. And we are not talking about Airlock Alpha or news outlets like that who have been reporting this fairly and accurately, as far as we can tell. We are currently a non commercial site that adheres to all laws in that regard. As I mentioned in my previous review, MGM is an historic company with perhaps the largest library of film credits to its name in the world. Some have recently been using yellow journalism, a sensationalized method of reporting to “stir up the pot”.

Click to visit Stargate on MGM Dot Com!MGM is a company that has brought nearly 100 years of outstanding entertainment to the viewing public. Shame on any person for taking such a course… Doing so in such a manner is befitting the behavior of “junk yard dogs” fighting over a bone. This is also wrong. MGM is NOT a junk yard dog and deserves to be treated with the respect it deserves for Stargate and many other accomplishments.

Why? Because it is clear that some do not understand business. What is happening and what is about to happen cannot be explained if you do not understand the precepts of business. Patience is a virtue. Watch listen and learn. For those who inappropriately speak of MGM; Know this: MGM will continue!

Next is a discussion that the “Best Defense is a Strong Offense”. With regard to the fandoms, it simply does not work. While that may be true of military operations or football, it is not true for solving interpersonal conflict. In fact such a strategy is a recipe for disaster. Of what does WHR speak?

We are speaking of people on Twitter and Facebook as well as a few websites that have elected to participate in attacking Stargate Universe, the creators of Stargate, web sites they have a grudge against and including but not limited to WHR, Joe Mallozzi’s blog, Show Patrols blogs, and many others. Sadly it is only to their own detriment and each other. A specific scene from Stargate Universe “Human” may offer guidance.

    SGU S1x14 Human - The number 46
To quote Vince Lombardi “The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have”.  It is not what people do against each other in their frustration when they cannot find a solution to a problem that does not please them. There are no real short-cuts in life. Here is the Single Effect of what Stargate and life is all about people:  Only hard work, forthrightness, honesty and dedication to name but a few will reveal enlightenment and rewards there from.

Remember: “There are no problems, just solutions waiting to be found and appropriately executed for the benefit of all”.  Unfortunately a few people have elected to not look in the mirror at their own actions, failing to live up to their promises and then holding grudges when they could not get “their own way”.  Worse they have tried to short circuit the matrix rather than do the hard work to earn their status in life.

WHR supports and reports on many things including charities and volunteer activities.  We support all flavors of Stargate as well. We do not take sides in a dispute even when our own reporters have been maligned for no good reason. Instead a few people have elected to throw gasoline on the fire and hand grenades with their keyboards rather than seek solutions. Several claim to “speak the truth” but refuse to enter into a “live and let live” solution. In fact a very few believe that no discussion is best because “they know they are right”! Right for whom?

Before concluding this review, a couple have stated “who the hell do you think you are”? The WHR answer is simple: “Who the hell do we have to be to get you all to behave like adults rather than like “junk yard dogs” fighting over the “bone”. Forget the bone people, get along and enjoy the ride that always has been  Stargate.

Enjoy the news video if you can tear yourself away from holding grudges. Think about it. In the video you will see a truly enlightened individual who pays the ultimate price. Although not from Stargate the scene is poignant to all who may finally realize the cost of the price that was paid. Let us not pay such a price. Dr. Jackson gets it. Can all Stargate fans say the same?

SGU S1x14 Human - Dr. Jackson gets it. Can all say same?
In concluding this review a bit more analysis. As I suspected early on in “Human”, this was to be a two part episode. The number 46 is the secret to unraveling the mystery on Destiny, the code of life, genetics. As we have observed previously in The Ancients behavior, this has been their secret to controlling their technology. So it will be with Destiny in Stargate Universe. It is most fitting that it is Michael Shanks as Dr. Daniel Jackson who talks the numbers (the Ancient code), and helps Dr. Rush finally see the light.

We must recall that Dr. Jackson was once an Ascended Ancient. So a few thought provoking questions for all to ponder.

    1. Could it be that when Dr. Rush hooked himself into the Ancient Chair that the reason he dreamed of Dr. Jackson was related to Daniels time as an Ancient?
    2. Could some of Dr. Jackson’s knowledge as well as that of other Ancients been transferred to Dr. Rush?
    3. Will this knowledge help Dr. Rush activate enough systems to help the civilians and crew before the aliens return?
    4. Will Dr. Rush he be able “fix” Destiny to go back and rescue Eli, Lt. Scott Chloe and Sgt. Greer?
    5. Will the away team trapped on the planet be taken hostage before the Stargate mythology is discovered?

If you have not seen Stargate Universe S1x13  “Faith” you may desire to stop reading now. This is a review with analysis. You have been warned.

Click to visit Stargate on MGM Dot Com!One of the true episodic sagas of our age, Stargate Universe continues the fine tradition of Stargate made possible from the fantastically gifted actors and the creators of SGU, specifically MGM Studios and of course the many talented teams at “The Bridge” who bring this fantastic creation to us every week.

By the way our kudos to Craig Engler of SyFy for engaging the fans last night on Twitter during the east coast USA airing of “Faith”. His REDACTED re-tweets were especially enjoyable and WHR was honored to receive a non redacted re-tweet. Thanks Craig!SGU S1x13 Faith - TJ lets her hair down

What is it that continues in “Faith”? First off a comment on the super costumes by the great Valerie Halverson whom we have reported on previously. Valerie does a more than wonderful job. The costuming in “Faith” are evidence of her skills  Especially on the “camping trip” portion of the “Faith”. Coupled with the beautiful “hair down” effect on TJ, all I can say is thank you Valerie.

Back to the beginning of “Faith”. As you may recall we left off in “Divided”, after what amounted to a mutiny by the civilian elements attempting to wrest control from the Col. Young and military. Depending on your point of view it is a good thing the military retained control aboard the ship, but the damage interpersonal relationships was done.

Now come the consequences of what has happened melded with an episode that will simply blow your mind.

SGU S1x13 Faith - Thinking of consequences

SGU S1x13 Faith - Thinking of consequences

As we return to Destiny we see and hear the sounds everyday life, that of TJ’s alarm going off for instance.

SGU S1x13 Faith - Alarm goes off

We then move to Lt. Scott shaving the old fashioned way.

SGU S1x13 Faith - Shaving old fashioned way

SGU S1x13 Faith - MingNa Camile thinking

We observe MingNa thinking hard while cooking breakfast before she talks with Dr. Rush (Robert Carlyle) about whether he should be out of bed so soon after his surgery from the removal of the alien implant. As we pan throughout the ship we see that repairs are underway by various crews all in a requirement to recover from the damage from the attacks by the aliens from episodes Space and Divided.

Col. Young finds Dr. Rush working in the control room. He expresses genuine concern about what he is doing out of bed so soon after his operation to extract the alien tracking device.

SGU S1x12 - TJ removes tracking device

Dr. Rush reports to the control room to help with repairs. When Col. Young arrives, it is clear from the expression on Dr. Rush’s face he does trust Col. Young and with good reason. Despite their truce this is going t be a rather sticky situation.

SGU S1x13 Faith - Carlyle Kelamis Spence in control room

Col. Young knows (Justin Louis as Louis Ferreira) that what he did was wrong. On the planet after Dr. Rush was directly involved with the first attempt by the civilians to usurp his authority we know that Col. Young simply lost his temper in a fit of rage. Now Col. Young has to deal with the impact on others from his earlier actions.  Both men felt they were doing the “right thing”. Both were wrong.

SGU S1x13 Faith - Coming out of FTL

The wrongness of both men are coupled with the role of Camile Wray behind the scenes in her conspiracy with Dr. Rush in which she only further compounded a bad situation. We also see that Camile is re-assessing her complicity in the grab for power. So are the rest of the Destiny civilians. All are paying the ultimate price of decent people pushed to the brink, guilt for what they have done and damage to the symbiotic relationships they have.

SGU S1x13 Faith - One bad boy

SGU S1x13 Faith - Another bad boy

Much as in real life when people do wrong things to further their own ambitions, some do so deliberately without assessing the damage they could inflict and seek to lay blame on others for their own shortcomings. People in life, even adults who should know better let their emotions carry them away often without regard to promises they have made to others and themselves. We witness this factor precisely as the Single Effect of the episode that is inherent in “Faith”.

As the episode continues the Destiny comes out of FTL and the crew is expecting a planet that Destiny is typically seeking for supplies and a sun to fuel up the power reserves drained by the recent battles. However there is no planet and the sun is a yellow dwarf that Dr. Rush discovers disrupted the course of Destiny due to its extreme gravity well.

When they arrive in what appears to be a void of stars, suddenly a star appears and so does a planet with what appears to be perfect Class M conditions! Moreover, the clock on the Destiny is not set to the expected limited time frame, but instead for over a month!

Further investigation reveals that the planet is real, but the planet is too young not matching the age of the yellow dwarf sun. This additional time is a nice departure from the pressure filled stops in other solar systems representing an opportunity to obtain a substantial amount of food, water and medicinal herbs needed by TJ.

The crew is taken by the wonder of creation after the disaster of conflict internally aboard Destiny and externally from the evil aliens seeking to obtain the secrets of Destiny seen by their attacks on Destiny in “Space”. Delving in another aspect of “faith” several think a divine entity is responsible. Others think that an advanced (new) race of aliens may be playing a role with benevolent intentions that could possibly help the crew return home to Earth. Others think it is just the way life happens. You know … “Stuff happens”.

SGU S1x13 Faith - Wonder of Creation

In good faith (pun intended) we all learn about these factors in Stargate Universe episode 13. As I stated on Twitter, while watching the SyFy East feed on Comcast cable, this episode of Stargate Universe will blow the minds of all who love Stargate!

Who or what is responsible for the miracle of creation that they are on the doorstep of? Even though they know scientifically why Destiny came out of FTL and allow for so much time, all contemplate these questions.

One thing is clear though, with the extended investigation, the Destiny is on a parabolic course around the star and that is why the extra time that has been provided. With over four week’s time to perform the parabolic maneuver, Col. Young decides to send an expedition and link back up on the way out of the solar system to obtain a “ton of supplies”. First a short away mission is assembled.

SGU S1x13 Faith - Entering the atmosphere

Next we are treated to one of the reasons people love Stargate Universe in specific and Stargate in general, the superb special effects created by the team under the guidance  of Mark Savela. The sequence of the shuttle detaching from Destiny and subsequent entering the atmosphere are so intense looking that I would swear I am viewing the “real thing”.

Atmospheric re-entry is followed by scenes of the planet swooping in for touchdown This is one of the very best parts in “Faith” is for fan geeks (looks in mirror) From Lt. Scott’s expression so does he.

SGU S1x13 Faith - Entering the atmosphere in shuttle

Specifically when the Destiny shuttle is seen touching down on the verdant green planet. I remember the awe I felt when I watched the 1956 MGM classic “Forbidden Planet” when the interstellar cruiser C-57-D touched down on the surface of Altair Four. A truly ground breaking sequence filmed in 1955 with the special effects help of Walt Disney Studios 55 year ago as shown below.

    Forbiden Planet C-57-D touches down

SGU S1x13 Faith - Shuttle zooming in for touch down

Back to business: When we observe the wonder of “Faith” we see what the team of wizards (lead by Visual Effects Supervisor Mark Savela), have accomplished. Simply put it is another amazing feat of legerdemain. I often wonder if they know just how much they have advanced the state of the art?

SGU S1x13 - Destiny shuttle touches down

Absolutely breathtaking sequences that should win an award! I have played the VFX sequences over and over again and enjoy with absolute glee as tribute to the outstanding work we are all being treated to! Thanks Mark and everyone on “The Bridge” team.

Next the expeditionary crew returns to Destiny to report their findings and receives approval to return to the young planet. When we say young, we mean only about 100 million years or so! After landing on the planet for the month long stay, we see a near altercation break out between a civilian and a lower grade military person break out reflecting the tension that remains from the past two episodes. Some on both sides are still holding a grudge, while others are doing what should be done, working to mend fences.

This Stargate Universe episode takes us where humanity often finds itself, pondering their “faith” hence the title of the episode. There are several poignant scenes as  each character explores the aftermath of “Space” and “Divided”. The series characters delve into their own thoughts about what happens when as the folks in the UK might say; the “shyte hits the fan” between people.

SGU S1x13 Faith - Greer say dig and love it!

I personally loved the latrine digging sequence with Sgt. Greer catching one of his subordinates ordering a civilian to dig the trenches for sanitation. Sgt. Greer intervenes and returns the favor and orders both of them to “dig” and tells them they will enjoy it! We see Jamil Walker Smith’s character really coming into his own in “Faith”. He tells Lt. Scott about the “Spirit of cooperation” and “We are all friends now”.

Perhaps a very good thing Camile Wray (MingNa) was not in charge on the planet when Greer orders “Get digging to both his soldier and the civilian” Classic humor has definitely returned to Stargate that is delightful to observe under the able direction of famed Stargate Director William Waring! Very nice work indeed William.

As the episode progresses, the expeditionary away team falls in love with the planet. TJ states “It is just like home”. Lt.  Scoot and Greer take the shuttle out to explore the planet when suddenly an obelisk some 2000 foot tall is observed on the planet surface. Sgt. Greer remarks “looks like we were not the first ones here” proving that someone or something built the monument. More on the “super sized” Washington Monument like obelisk a bit later.

SGU S1x13 Faith - Shuttle finds the obelisk

We also see a relationship of an amicable nature develop between Camile and Eli. Could it be a romance coming up between the two? Well everyone needs a little love in their lives and the scenes between MingNa and David Blue are exquisitely performed. Stay tuned for how this all plays out, but my opinion is that something is developing between Eli and Camile.

SGU S1x13 Faith - David Blue Eli chats with Camile

SGU S1x13 Faith - MingNa Camile chats with Eli

SGU S1x13 Faith - Making eyes at Eli

As they are discovering more scientific information, Eli has another geeky moment when he refers to another classic movie “Star Trek – The Wrath of Kahn” with a comment about “The Genesis Device” in reference to the young age of the planet. Once again the creators have the recipe just right!

During the preparation for the month long expedition to the planet we witness an interesting scene between two of my favorite actresses, Alaina Huffman (TJ) and MingNa (Camile Wray). Okay I will admit it I love the entire compliment of ensemble female actresses! All of them. Period. But that is a guy thing, a healthy admiration for the female cast members characters and the outstanding acting talent of MingNa, Alaina Huffman, Elyse Levesque, Jennifer Spence and Julia Benson . That is all I will say about that… for now!

SGU S1x13 Faith - Camile talks with TJ

Back to the point. MingNa expresses concern on whether or not Dr. Rush has made an error in his calculations. This is a reference to Dr. Rush’s lack of disclosure to her during “Space”. It is a most believable sequence and when TJ does a double take about Camile’s change of heart, it simply and more than adequately display something we all have, human doubt. Either way we know that the so called hard hearted Camile does have a conscience and is trying to mend fences herself. Naturally TJ with her high level of compassion absorbs the inputs, filing it away for future reference.

SGU S1x13 Faith - TJ double take

During the episode we also see more of Dale Volker (Patrick Gilmore). The fact that the writers are “folding in” the the supporting actors and actress is testimony to the breadth of the series. After our reporters met and spent a great deal of time with Peter Kelamis and Patrick Gilmore at the event we recently covered, I can report that not only are they great actors, they are very nice human beings.

SGU S1x13 Faith - Dr. Caine epiphany

SGU S1x13 Faith - Lt. Scott with Dr. Caine

Dr. Caine (Tygh Runyan) has an epiphany of a nature akin to religion when talking with Lt. Scott (Brian J. Smith). He believes that they were guided there by a divine source or entity. Others feel this way as well. His comment about fate and that only the hand of God could be responsible for their good luck. But there are others on the team that feel that such is just the way life is to avoid the “crap we step in”.

The distance we saw develop between Chloe and Lt. Scott has a moment as Chloe is bathing is the marshes. The music is wonderful and both look at each other longingly hoping to bridge the gap created in “Divided”

SGU S1x13 Faith - Longing eyes for Chloe

SGU S1x13 Faith - Longing eyes for Lt Scott

Later that night as Chloe and Lt. Scott are getting together at the campfire, the obelisk lights up beaming a laser like signal into the night sky. They party on the planet is over folks. With this development, Lt. Scoot reports into Col Young Is this an artifact from the evil aliens? I think not, but the mythology of Stargate itself is about to return. Trust me in this regard. It is going to happen.

SGU S1x13 Faith - Chloe and Scott see the light

SGU S1x13 Faith - The obelisk emots light

Dr Rush (Robert Carlyle) also has moments of introspection realizing that he too has taken radical steps to blunt the power of the military on Destiny. As the episode continues the retrospective nature of Dr. Rush and each character grows as people rebuild the bridges they have destroyed in the previous episodes.

SGU S1x13 Faith - Peter Kelamis as Adam Brody

SGU S1x13 Faith - Jennifer Spence as Lisa Park

SGU S1x13 - Brody and Park fixing damaged shuttle

We also observe Adam Brody (Peter Kelamis) and Lisa Park (Jennifer Spence) working on the damaged shuttle under orders from Col. Young. Col. Young has learned from his mistakes and has decided to develop “new bridges” to the civilians, most of them at least as Dr Rush is still distant.

SGU S1x13 Faith - TJ is pregnant

Then we learn something we have all suspected, TJ is pregnant and from an affair with Col. Young her former lover alluded to earlier in the series. However, as Chloe / Elyse is about to inform Lt. Scott TJ admits the facts to Lt. Scott. TJ and many on the surface including Lt. Scott, 11 in all have decided to stay on the planet and live a new life . Col. Young will have nothing to do with losing his military personal and puts his contingency plan into action.

Taking the not quite repaired second shuttle to the surface he issues an ultimatum using a “carrot and a stick”. Those that desire to stay can do so, but the military people must return under his direct orders. Either get on board the good shuttle to return to Destiny or he will take them all back at gunpoint.

SGU S1x13 Faith - Col Youngs ultimatum

Not surprisingly Sgt. Greer (Jamil Walker Smith) is the very first to follow orders. Greer is an absolutely loyal character to Col. Young as we have witnessed previously. We observe Lt. Scott is struggling with the situation, but his good common sense takes over. By the way, Brian J. Smith delivered an eloquent performance that is wonderful to behold. Way to go Brian! What is not clear from the ending sequence is if Dr Caine or others remained on the planet. I suspect the answer is yes and we will see and interaction from this in the future.

SGU S1x13 Faith - Carving chess pieces

Lastly, the scene with Dr. Rush carving chess pieces when Col. Young visits him are very nice. Attempting to break the impasse between them, Col. Young states that he enjoys playing chess. Rather an ironic metaphor since the two of them have been playing chess in real life with the fate of real people at stake. I am hopeful they will take this opportunity to move the “pieces of their problems” and their aggression to the board rather than at the expense of of everyone aboard Destiny.

    SGU S1x13 Faith - Feasting

SGU S1x13 Faith - Lt. James & Young feasting

In concluding my review many asked about the song featured on Stargate UniverseFaith‘. The song is called ‘All My Days‘ by Alexi Murdoch which played while the crew feasted from the spoils on the planet. The use was absolutely brilliant. We hear this wonderful piece several times throughout and as the montage draws “Faith” to a close. The continued use of music in Stargate Universe is simply wonderful. Keep it up MGM and “The Bridge” teams! You ROCK!

My grade for Stargate Universe “Faith”? Another straight “A”! Greatness. Bravo. TRULY AN EPIC SAGA!

I knew that this episode was to continue the previous one, but I wasn’t expecting it to surpass it.  I found it interesting how they would open it up with Chloe dreaming of which it lead to a

I can see and agree with the autism reference PBMom used in her report, and being a mom myself of a son with autism also, I can only imagine how my son and others must feel that they have all the words there to communicate, but can’t get it out.

SGU S1x12 Divided Anna Galvin as Mrs Armstrong

Waking up in a sweat about seeing her mother in a nightmare, Chloe knew that the encounter was far from over.  I felt bad for Lt. Scott though, he wanted to help Chloe, but just didn’t know how.

SGU S1x12 Divided Lt. Scott with Chloe Armstrong

She leaves him there and end up in the mess where the other captor was sitting, trying to make sense of it all.

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided - Rush and Chloe in Mess Hall

Rush knew she was awaken by the same dream, maybe because he was having a similar one.  But the one thing they both knew, they were coming.  The aliens wasn’t done with them yet.

SGU S1x12 Divided Louis Ferreira as Col. Young

SGU S1x12 Divided Robert Carrlyle as Dr. Rush

Rush confronts Col. Young about the possibility of the aliens being able to track this ship.  Col. Young accuses Rush of taking one of the stones and that’s how Young got transferred aboard the alien ship in the first place.  With Rush not saying one way or the other, Rush informed Col. Young that as they were going to be out of FTL for a few hours, that maybe this could be a time that they can look for some sort of tracking devices on the outside of the ship.

SGU S1x12 Divided In Control Room Kino on hunt

They set the Kino off in search of anything out of the ordinary.

SGU S1x12 Divided Kino through the hole

It’s released through the hole the aliens made to lure Chloe out, and set out on it’s search.

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided - Greer and Young confer

Greer meets up with Col. Young asking to speak with him.  This is when he told him that no matter what the reasons of leaving Rush on the planet, if that’s what indeed happened,, but that he will defend Col. Young.  They both knew that it was only a matter of time that something was going to happen to challenge his authority, and Greer just wanted Young to know who’s side he was on.

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided - Superb David Blue as Eli Wallace

Rush radios Col. Young that they found what they were looking for.  So Col. Young, Lt. Scott and Eli were walking down the corridor towards the shuttle to fly out and blast the dang thing off the hull.

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided - In the hall

That’s when Lt. Scott seen Chloe with Rush.  With no time to find out why or what they were up to, he was summoned by Col. Young to get a move on.

    2010 SGU S1x12 Divided - In the hall 2

While Col. Young and Lt. Scott were aboard the shuttle and powering her up, Rush and Wray were in another section of Destiny to prepare for their little coop.

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided - Lights turning on

Lights were being turned on and Rush & Wray were discussing that this was the best opportunity to set forth their plan to take over the ship.  So with that said, Rush told Wray to get her people in place and ready for the signal.

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided - Chloe asks to see aliens ship

Chloe stopped by to distract Eli by asking to see the alien ship, not thinking anything of it, he brings up the picture of it and shows to her.  Now this is where I have to mention,, remember in the beginning of the first part of the season, when there was something that had fallen off the ship.  And you all said “what the hell?”  Well if you make a comparison, they are the same.  So when Rush had said earlier to Col. Young that he believes that the aliens have been tracking the ship for a very long time, he wasn’t kidding.

    2010 SGU S1x12 Divided - Chloe keeps Eli's attention

Crafty little buggers aren’t they?  So while Chloe keeps Eli onto the situation at hand, Rush is in another part of the ship, transferring control over to him.  You got to hand it to them,, they are resourceful when they need to be.

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided - TJ really does not notice

This scene gave me a chuckle.  Brody getting the message that it’s on and then TJ entering the room, loved how he made up a fake reason as to the radio message, when it appeared that TJ really hadn’t noticed or cared, lmao.

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided -Things go wrong

With the shuttle coming back in to dock with the ship, things go a little wrong. The docking clamps won’t fasten on the shuttle, holding it onto the hull of the Destiny. That’s when Chloe conveniently informs Eli about another station in the control room.  Not sure what she’s up to, but it can’t be good.  Have to watch out for her in the future I’m sure.

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided -Chloe runs to the rescue

This is when things get hairy.  With Col. Young and Lt. Scott trapped in the shuttle with no way of getting out – alive, Chloe runs to the part of the ship where Rush is, transferring the data.  Col. Young radios for Rush, with no answer – typical.  Then, he radios for Greer on another frequency, informing him of the situation and to locate Rush, but not to hurt anyone.

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided -Sgt Greer thinks it over

With Greer informed, not sure if he’s able to not hurt anyone, especially since his confinement in the pilot episode still isn’t clear to me.  Hopefully we’ll know more to his back story in episodes to come. Chloe reaches Rush and informs him to stop what he’s doing.  He objects at first, but then she tells him that the docking clamps won’t engage and that if something isn’t done, that both Young and Scott will die.

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided -Poor Eli

Poor Eli, that’s all I can say.  Being told by Rush over the radio, of which Young can also hear him, that he’s to stop what he’s doing and allow Rush to finish what he’s began.  And with Young on the other end, telling Eli to not listen to Rush and to get the controls back ASAP as they only had less then 5 minutes before the ship goes back into FTL.  What is a guy to do?

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided -Exterior view of Destiny

Now with both Camilla and Chloe trying to talk some sense into him, it takes Chloe’s comment “nobody should get hurt,” to make Rush stop,, just short of getting everything he needed. With an excited Eli announcing that he’s got control back, the clamps engage and within seconds, the whole ship jumps back into FTL.

Col. Young and Lt. Scott leave the shuttle, very relieved. Though with Col. Young, he was more pissed off then relieved.  Can’t blame him really.  But now maybe he can get a sense of how Rush felt left to die on that desert planet. With doors closing off sections of the ship, being controlled by Rush, this is where things start to get interesting.

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided -Volker and Brody confronted

You’ve heard of “wrong place, wrong time?”  Well, this is definitely one of those moments.  The perfect time of the civilians to take control of their assigned areas, and there ends up being a slight complication. Camilla Wray walks in where an Airman is holding a gun on some of the civilians with the announcement that unfortunately some people, civilian and military alike, were trapped on the wrong side of the line.  The civilians have taken over the ship

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided -Only one system

With Rush gloating that he’s got control of all systems, it didn’t take Eli long to point out that there was one major computer system that Rush didn’t get, due to stopping to allow the clamps to strap to the shuttle in time… life support.  That was the only system, so far, that Eli still had to work with. All are hopeful.

    2010 SGU S1x12 Divided -Relief

Then it just came down to negotiating for certain things.  One of which to more or less be treated as equals and not to be told what to do or where to go.  The dictatorship had to stop.  Though there was still one more thing Rush decided to ask for. Surprised that Rush would be willing to trade food and water over for Eli, the only thing would be as to why??  Other then having to brains on the one side, but what makes Rush think that Eli would ever turn so quickly anyway..

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided -Eli has doubt about Chloe

With Chloe taking Eli to their command centre, I’m sure Eli’s is not convinced if he could trust her.  This is the moment when Chloe really surprised people as to where her loyalties would lie.  With a man who basically killed her father, or a man she, I would assume, love.  For her to not inform Lt. Scott, she must have known deep down that he would honour his loyalty to the military first, her second.

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided -Eli has doubt about Chloe 2

I loved this moment, when Eli finds out that she would join the other side.  Makes him question everything about her. Out of FTL, that’s when Young and Greer suit up to go outside and walk to the hole the aliens cut into their hull, which is on the other side of the “line”.

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided -Scott and Young outside

The civilians congregated into the mess chatting on whatever is on their minds.  When Brody speaks up that they shouldn’t have given up the food and water.  But Wray informs him and the others that it’s a civilian government that the military ultimately takes orders from.

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided -Every once of power

Rush informs Eli that they have to get every ounce of power from the ships systems and from places they haven’t even heard of yet and direct it to the ships shields.

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided -Aliens are coming AGAIN

Well now, who do we have here?

Eli tries his dandiest to stall Rush from turning on the shields, knowing full well that the Col. & Greer were still outside walking on the hull to the opening on their side of the ship.  It worked though, they got inside just as the shield was activated.  I had to giggle at the look on Eli’s face to, not knowing for sure.

With Col. Young and Greer now inside, he tells Greer to go let Scott out, assemble a team and secure the civilians again, while he was going to look for Rush. With Scott out, and a bunch of officers behind him, he couldn’t help but notice some civilians on the floor of the ship.  When asked, Greer just simply told him that they are fine.  No doubt they will have a wicket headache when they do wake up.

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided -Dr. Rush is caught

With Wray learning that Rush has a tracking device surgically placed in his chest, she concluded that, that’s the reason why he wanted to act on her plan. Col. Young walking in announcing that he didn’t care who’s idea it was to do what they done, it was now over and things were going to be different from here on out.

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided -All eyes on TJ

That’s when Eli informed Col. Young, TJ, and Scott that Rush has a tracking device planted inside his chest.  So they were shit out of luck because even if they survive this attack, the aliens will no doubt be able to find them again.  It had to be removed.  Everyone focused on TJ. Lt. Scott and Col Young confer about it.

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided -Lt. Scott and Col. Young confer

With TJ refusing to do the surgery, Chloe spoke up and said that she would do it.  Though it really wouldn’t be her, but a doctor’s conscience from Earth performing the operation.Doctor Brightman arrives to see to Rush, who was already prepped for surgery.  She was shocked to learn the means of which Rush was put to sleep.  But when out in uncharted space, you have to do things on a whim.

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided -Aliens fire on Destiny

Yet again Eli tries to convince Col. Young that Rush is right about the shields.  Taking power away from that just to fire back, and have no effect I may add, what good will it prove?  It will only prove that either side on it’s own will destroy themselves.  Only by joining forces, I think, they will live to see another day.

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided -Dr. Brightman makes incision

Brightman starts her incision into Rush.

Then with the aliens still firing on the ship, causing the lights to flicker, everyone holding their positions.  The officers with the civilians secured in the mess, Eli and Young in the control room, Brightman searching for the transmitter with a new gadget made by Eli, that is until they lost the connection and Chloe looks down into the open wound and backs away.

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided -The operation on Dr. Rush

Unfortunately, now TJ have got to finish the operation.  Something she wasn’t too happy about.  But just as she was about to take over and what do you know,, he starts to wake up.  I guess not enough of the anaesthetic was given to him the first time.  They give him another dose and out he goes again.

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided -the danged thing is out

With the device out, they all took a deep breath of relief.  Of course not long after, Scott had the device in hand, taking his handgun, he then uses the butt of the gun to smash the transmitter.  There, gone, no more aliens.  I hope.

2010 SGU S1x12 Divided - Col. Young "back to your quarters"

Stargate Universe: “Space” Post Air Date Review 3 – Focus: UK Perspective

Stargate Universe - SGU season two wide banner

Hi Stargate Universe fans,Click to visit Stargate Universe on MGM Dot Com!

I have been a Stargate fan since the original Roland Emmerich movie all those years ago (1994). I own all seasons/TV movies of Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis ever made; I am what you call a Gater! *The official term for a self-confessed Stargate Fan* Yes! It’s true I have a Stargate inspired tattoo. Who told you?? *Smile*

I think the casting of the Stargate Universe show has been chosen well, they seem to have gelled thoroughly, and the interaction of Characters within the show is great!

A brief summary of this episode: We started knowing that Dr. Rush (Robert Carlyle) was purposely left on that planet to die by Young. Col. Young (Louis Ferreira) lied and said he didn’t make it. He has flashbacks of the event whilst shaving…

    2010 SGU S1x11 Young Flashback

So we are at a stale mate, everyone knew that Young didn’t like Rush, and many of them are guessing that the ‘truth’ is fact. (Colonel young played by Louis Ferreira. Louis is Portuguese-born Canadian actor, who portrays Young with a rough gritty edge, yet companionate. He is simply wonderful, and I totally understand why he wanted rid of Rush. Rush is just so creepy and secretive, and knows way more then he has ever let on)

Colonel Young is preparing to go file a report with the SGC, Camille corners him; she tells him how she feels, but unfortunately there is not enough evidence to prove the ‘truth’…

2010 SGU S1x11 Space Young and Wray

It’s apparent that Camille Wray (MingNa) feels that she is the better option to be in command then young; it has been proven that civilians can be in command of military operations (within the Stargate Universe… Yes I know! It’s a pun *smile*) Weir did a great job on Atlantis then after a brief interlude of military command Woolsey a civilian and fellow IOA member took over!

I think if I was stuck on Destiny I would feel more comfortable with a civilian in charge! Not rush mind you! But Wray; yes I could deal with that! Ming Na is such a competent actress; she is fantastic! And I ‘love’ how she makes young uncomfortable just by merely standing in his presence!

So young goes to file his report any way, during the setting up of the stones, I had a giggle Lt. Vanessa James (Julia Benson who is a trained dancer for those who didn’t know) and T.J (Alaina Huffman she is wonderful, she makes TJ believable and so very likeable she remains one of my favorite characters, along with Lt James)

Enter the observation room above the ‘stone room’ and initially ask Eli to fix the showers… But (not realising that the comms were open) Lt James starts babbling about how “sexy” Dr Cain is…

2010 SGU S1x11 Space Dr Cain

He says: “I can hear you” Her face says it all, hilarious! Tj. Eli and us laugh!

2010 SGU S1x11 Space Eli TJ and Lt James

2010 SGU S1x11 Space Eli TJ laugh, mortified Lt James

Young activates his stone, but instead of being at the SGC he is in an alien craft, he is obviously shocked to see an Alien walk by him.

2010 SGU S1x11 Space Young sees the Alien

Meanwhile back on Destiny, the Alien now possessing Young attacks Scott, something happens the transmission is ceased; Young is back everyone is shaken.

Wray thinks it’s a little too convenient that the stone usage in ceased. She was about to file her report to make Young look bad…

Eli (played by David Blue… I adore Eli! He is so cute and geeky! We ‘so’ would be friends! I love his comic relief; David is a great actor!! Lots more Eli Please!! There is never enough Eli!), is spying on Hydroponics with a Kino where the Civilian uprising is starting… Wray and others discussing the way the ship is run by the military.

2010 SGU S1x11 Space Eli Kino spying

Destiny drops out of FTL as she detects a planet with a Gate, when the crew are alerted of an Alien Ship…

2010 SGU S1x11 Space Alien Ship

In the control room, Eli brings the Alien craft up on the HUD. He sends a message, they almost immediately respond with: “Surrender” in English. No translation (Scary)

An amazing space battle ensues. The visual effects were outstanding throughout this sequence, the VFX of Destiny and the Alien craft, then the in space shoot-em-up between the smaller battle craft and the Shuttle… the word ‘Epic’ describes this nicely.

2010 SGU S1x11 Space Space Battle

2010 SGU S1x11 Space Space Battle.

Several people are injured, when systems short out because of the heavy fire they are taking from the Alien craft. Lt. James stands out, as a hero when she chances running through the electrical surges to turn off the power in that section of the ship, so no one else gets hurt.

2010 SGU S1x11 Space Brave Lt James

As everyone is distracted with the onslaught, one of the small alien craft latches on to Destiny, and cuts a hole through. Silly Chloe (Elyse Levesque a very skilled actress) looks up in curiosity and gets abducted.

    Chloe looks into the light

The Aliens retreat, young orders Scott to stand sown as Chloe may be on one of the ships.  The Aliens retreat into FTL. Young takes it upon himself to go after them using the communication stones.

Chloe: She regains consciousness, to find that she is held within a chamber filled with water, she is wearing alien attire and a breathing apparatus, she flips out when an alien reveals itself in front of the chamber. This alien has a scary, animalistic edge… and blue is always a good colour in my books…

2010 SGU S1x11 Space Chloe on the Alien Ship

When Young inhabits the Alien’s body, discovers a Human held within a chamber of Water, Chloe?? He smashes it open, oh my gosh it is Rush, alive…

    Rush alive

Robert Carlyle is such an astounding Scottish Actor! (Everyone remembers “The Full Monty” right, and some may not know that he voiced Durza in the “Eragon” Video Game)

Of course Rush sees an Alien not Young. So Rush has the ‘alien’ put on some kind of alien tech, neurological implant to attempt to communicate. Rush sees flashes of everything that has happened from Young. Then Young looses the connection, it’s unclear why.

Rush after getting the information about the information about Chloe and an escape route; kills the alien, with relish behind his eyes.

    Rush kills the Alien

Young tries to establish communication once more, but it doesn’t work, obviously because the alien is dead. They engage in another space battle, again I can not say enough nice things about the VFX in the space battle sequences.

Rush rescues Chloe. And they make their escape.

    Rush and Chloe

Destiny is firing at the alien craft, but every time they fire the shields are closer to failing. The aliens retreat into FTL all but one craft, which latches of and cuts a hole. Chloe drops through, and then Rush… To Greer’s surprise (Jamil Walker Smith is fantastic as Greer. You really don’t know what way the character is going to go next. He has me pondering what is really going on in his head).

    Greer

Scott and Chloe are happy to see each other, and hug…

Brain J. Smith shows real emotion in his portrayal of Lt Scott throughout this episode. He really is a talented actor, showing ‘real’ emotions making his character ‘lovable’ and ‘believable’.

Brain Jacob Smith as Lt Scott

Rush tells everyone that Young had told the truth, and shares his theory on why the aliens are interested in them. He is sure that the Aliens are only interested in them because they are on Destiny. The aliens want the ship not them. They are just an obstacle between them acquiring Destiny and unlocking her secretes.

Rush pays a visit to Young they discuss why Rush didn’t just tell everyone the truth, that Young had attacked him and left him for dead… They decide to agree that everyone does not need to be distracted by the truth; they pretend nothing happened, “For the sake of the crew”.

    Rush and Young

Dr Cain (Tygh Runyan) sits with TJ they talk about Lt. James- he explains that he could not deal with being stuck on a ship with someone he had a bad relationship with (Which obviously hits home with TJ as she has an affair with Colonel Young). Young sees them together; my friend Lele has an interesting theory, that Dr Cain may cause a love triangle Kane-TJ-Young…

Young sees TJ and Dr Cain

Eli shows Young the Kino footage of Wray and the others plotting.

I really liked the song used during the montage scene here:  “Now Comes the Night” by Rob Thomas

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqMY9mMMJKU <~~Link to the video for“Now Comes the Night” by Rob Thomas

The lyrics really fitted the mood.

We end this episode with Wray and Rush discussing Young in hydroponics.

“The Colonel is dangerous” Rush says

“We need to do something about that,” Wray agrees

“ I tried, he damn dear killed me” Rush declares

    Wray and Rush

“Next time will be different” Wray states.

    Rush and Wray

I think it is wonderful that the SGU actors are active twitter users and interact with the fans!

There have been some confusion about the use of the communication stones, I have had some DM’s via twitter, but it is hard to explain the functionality of the communication stones in 140 characters. So here is a brief history of the communication stones and their function within the *forgive pun again* Stargate Universe!

In Stargate SG-1: Episode 8 of season 8 : “Citizen Joe”

    The character Joe Spencer

    2004 SG-1S8x08 Dan Castellaneta in SG-1

(Better known as Dan Castellaneta the voice of Homer Simpson) buys a ‘stone’ from a garage sale, he immediately picks up on images from Stargate SG-1 Missions, seemingly like flash backs. We find out that Joe had the same ATA (Atlantian technology activation) gene as General O’Neill and he activated the link once he touched it. O’Neill had activated the corresponding stone, and they were transferring thoughts to each other. It is explained that they are ‘thought’ to be long-range communication devices, these being a set.

Then in episode 2 of season 9 (SG-1) “Avalon part 2” we see the full potential of the communication stone’s. The ATA gene is not required to use the stones, they only need to be initialised by someone with the gene. The stones are reset to be used by Daniel Jackson and Vala Mal Doran, now they initially think they have been transported to another galaxy, but soon realise that they have not, when they see the reflections of the owner of the corresponding stone not themselves.

    2005 SG-1 S9x02 Daniel Vala, Stone device

So this shows the vast distances involved, the stones are in fact: “interstellar communication devises”. So we know that the person using the stone can only exchange consciousnesses across the vastness of space with another person, the body remains on Destiny/SGC. So therefore nothing but knowledge can be exchanged.
