    Heyla, The Event Fans,

Welcome to my review of season one, episode thirteen “Turnabout”. This was an excellent episode that brought back an old familiar friend, and introduced a new villain, of sorts. We received a few more answers, and were left with a lot of new questions.

    1. President Martinez and Sterling
Turnabout begins with a disturbing dream sequence which reveals to us the state of President Elias Martinez’s (Blair Underwood) mind. In his dream, his Chief of Staff, Richard Peel, (Roger Bart) tells him that he cannot stop Thomas because he is too weak and soft, and The Army General (Blue Deckart) agrees with him, adding that he is afraid to take bold action and that he has trusted the wrong people.

    The Event S1x13 Investigation

And then Sophia is revealed sitting in his chair behind his desk. She tells him that they gave him a chance, but that he blew it, and then he suddenly finds he has been chained to a chair. Sophia explains that now they have no other choice but to execute him. Thomas suddenly appears to do the job.

    The Event S1x13 President Maguire

When the president awakes from his dream he calls a meeting with his Chief of Staff, and The Army General, the two people who were just yelling at him in his dream. Simon Lee (Ian Anthony Dale) is there as well, and so is the wonderful, Incredible Director Blake Sterling (Zeljko Ivanek).‭

The Event S1x13 President yells at people

Director ‬Blake Sterling did not like being in the hospital, even though he had not completely healed from his three bullet wounds and torture marks. He was being such a pain in the rear that the hospital staff kicked him out of the hospital, and sent him back to work.

I have heard complaints and comments from many folks about how unrealistic his being back to work was, however, I felt very glad that they did do this because Sterling is one of my three favorite characters and I would have missed him a lot had he been absent for the sake of credibility.

    The Event S1x13 Sterling

Martinez is harsh with his people about what happened at Inostranka. He calls the General incompetent, or at least he calls the army incompetent for having lousy security, but then Sterling responds that Thomas took an officer’s family hostage, so no one should be blamed for what happened. Martinez is not impressed with this excuse, and he orders The General to clean up his house or their next conversation would be about his resignation.

    The Event S1x13 The General

Then he gets a call from Sophia Maguire, (Laura Innes) who informs him that Thomas (Clifton Collins Jr) is planning to steal uranium rods from a facility in San Diego for use in his portal array. Martinez does not want to believe her. He trusted her in the past and had regretted it, so now he is choosing to not trust her and to think of her as an enemy.

But then, good old Sterling, who has grown much since the show began, tells Martinez how Maya (Clea Duvall), a good Inostrankan, had given her life for his, not because she liked him, but because she wanted him to stop Thomas. Sterling says that he believes Sophia only wants to stop Thomas just like she says.

The Event S1x13 Sterling talks about Maya

Martinez does trust Sterling, so he reluctantly decides to give Sophia one more chance even though in his mind she has backed him into a corner once again leaving him only one alternative – hers. President Martinez and his advisors are afraid that if they do not move the rods that Thomas will cause nuclear fallout when he tries to portal them out.

So he reluctantly orders that the rods be moved to a research facility which is protected by a high electromagnetic field. If the rods are protected by electromagnetism then Thomas cannot portal inside. (This was why he could not portal anyone in or out of Inostranka).

Flash forward to later on in the episode, and the convoy carrying the rods is hijacked by Thomas, and robbed. They only used three trucks for the mission, one to carry the rods, and two to accompany it. No air patrol or anything. I have heard a lot of criticism for why the government would not assign more resources to this very important mission.

    The Event S1x13 Uranium convoy

The only plausible answer that I can give is that the government thought that by assigning air support and fifty zillion trucks to follow this one hazardous waste truck that it would draw a lot of suspicion. They may as well as have put up a large banner proclaiming, “Uranium rods in here. Come and get them.” *giggles* besides if Thomas had not been setting a trap I doubt he would have found them. But at that point no knew it was a trap.

Simon was leading the convoy, and is thankfully not injured when the bullets start flying through his windshield. Thomas blew up a trick in front of them forcing them to stop, and when they do sharpshooters climb out of the drainage ditches guns blazing.

The Event S1x13 Yay, Simon wasn't shot

    The Event 3 Ino sharpshooters

He gets in a few good shots, but unfortunately misses hitting Thomas. He does make an “amazing Houdini” like escape from the rod truck just before Thomas men storm it intent on killing him.

The Event S1x13 Super Simon fires back

The Event S1x13 Thomas men storm the rod truck

Sophia calls to let him know what happened, in case he did not know. He did already know and he reads her the riot act, accusing her of planning the whole thing and being in cahoots with Thomas. He is quite angry and embarrassed by this latest incident. His pride is hurt, and he feels weak again for trusting Sophia, which is why he refuses to believe her protestations of innocence or her explanation of being tricked.

The Event S1x13 President Martinez feels duped

He says that the only way he would believe her now is if she turned herself back in. Of course if she did she would likely be brutally tortured like the old Sterling suggested in an earlier episode. The weaker Martinez would not allow it, but I think this new stronger Martinez would.

They are able to trace Sophia’s phone call this time to the San Francisco area, and Martinez is told that the next time she calls they should be able to nab her exact whereabouts. He is gives the order to bring her in and says that it is okay to use deadly force if they need too.

The Event S1x13 She has played me for a fool for the last time

When questioned about this change of heart by Sterling, who seems rather reluctant to relay it, Martinez replies that Sophia has played him for the fool for the last time. Meaning this is not just the end of the world as we know it – this is personal.

    2. Leila and Samantha
Sean Walker (Jason Ritter) left Leila Buchanan (Sarah Roemer) in last week’s episode so that she would not have to choose between him and her father. I did not agree with his decision, but I think he was just trying to do the right thing.

Leila wanted to stay with her father, so that he could give her answers to all of the questions that she and we viewers have. Unfortunately Michael had to help Sophia with an important mission, and he did not want to risk Leila and Samantha Buchanan (Anna Clark) getting hurt, so left them with old friends.

The Event S1x13 Leila and Samantha

These friends were Diane Geller (Gabrielle Carteris) and Diane’s husband, Carlos Gellar (Jose Zuniga). Diane is apparently a clean freak, as well as a sleeper because she ordered both girls to go upstairs to wash the road off themselves the minute they stepped in the door. She did not seem glad to see them at all, and I kind of feel sorry for the girls for having to stay there.

Diane and Carlos argued a lot because Diane sides with Sophia and Carlos sides with Thomas, and they mention something about how working with Michael Buchanan (Scott Patterson) is vulnerability for Sophia. They do not explain why this would be, but I am sure that there is much more to the story of Michael and Sophia. I will speculate more about this in their section of the review.

The Event S1x13 Diane and Carlos Gellar

Carlos also asks Diane if she is aware of what will happen to the native population when Thomas brings all of their people down from the home planet, and when Leila, who overheard, asked what would happen Carlos said he would not tell her she would have to ask her dad.

I want to know this too! Is it simply an evolutionary thing? Could it be that our planet cannot handle both our people and theirs? Is extinction of one species or the other going to be the event? Although with their remarkable similarity to us I think they too evolved on earth. Perhaps something happened a long time ago that would have meant the extinction of everyone, but with half of them leaving the rest of us survived.

The Event S1x13 Leila demands answers

I am also wondering if the Inostrankan sleepers are having trouble reproducing. So far the only children that I have seen have been hybrids like Samantha. And in episode nine one of the sleepers mentioned one of the reasons why they wanted to stay was that they were finally settling down, finding love, and having children. I am excited to continue watching to see if these questions will be answered.

    3. Sean and Vicky
After leaving Leila, Sean goes somewhere and enters a tavern. He sits down next to a girl (Megan Paul) to have a drink when her date arrives and makes a big deal out of her having spoken to Sean. He tells her it is time to leave, she resists him. This guy called Mark, (Erik Aude) is obviously a bully, and I hope this girl dumps him soon.

The Event S1x13 Sean, the girl and the bully

Sean does not even try to intervene on her behalf. He does not want any trouble. He simply gets up to leave and Mark the bully, who is embarrassed that his girlfriend stood up to him in public starts shoving poor Sean around, taking out his anger and aggression on a more acceptable target.

Sean had been through so much over the past few weeks, and was likely feeling quite awful about breaking up with the love of his life (finding out that she was half alien did not help, I am sure.) So after getting thrashed around by the big bully , Sean goes all ape and starts whaling back on the guy until the bar owner (Jaime Alvarez) kicks him out.

The Event S1x13 Sean fights back

Sean next decides to go and visit his sister (Shay Astar). The door is locked and rather than knocking like a normal person he takes off a screen and crawls through a window into the kitchen. He raids the refrigerator because fighting makes you hungry, and his sister comes after him with a baseball bat.

    The Event S1x13 Sean's sister

She makes him a sandwich, but tells him that he cannot stay because he is still wanted by the FBI. Jimmy, her husband/boyfriend is on parole, and the rule is only one criminal is allowed to stay in the house at one time. (giggles)

Sean says he does not want to stay there he wants to go to Mexico and asks if boyfriend/husband can secure him a fake ID. His sister is relieved, but confused. Sean explains that he has been framed by some people who tried to assassinate the president that he did not murder anyone and that these same evil people out there experimenting on little girls and making them old. He does not mention aliens

The Event S1x13 Sean's sister does not believe him

His sister does not really believe his story, but she says that if it is true then he should not run away. He should stay and fight. That the Sean Walker she used to know would never run away. Sean is so inspired by his sister’s speech that he leaves her house and instead of going to Mexico he goes to Texas to break into Vicky Robert’s home.

Vicky Roberts (Taylor Cole) had gone shopping, and she was a nervous wreck, jumping at every shadow, just waiting for one of Doctor James Dempsey’s (Hal Holbrook) assassins to jump out at her to finish her off since she did not kill Vice President Jarvis (Bill Smitrovich) like she was told to do. An attractive male stranger (Jed Bernard) flirts with her over the cantaloupe, but instead of being flattered she is freaked out.

The Event S1x13 Vicky goes shopping

The Event S1x13 Vicky gets freaked by weird cantelope guy

A little later she is taking her groceries out to her car and he sneaks up behind her, Vicky does not hesitate to take the guy to the ground. She feels a little silly when he tells her he was only trying to return a slip of paper that had fallen from her purse.

The Event S1x13 Vicky takes cantelope guy down

The Event S1x13 Badass Vicky deals with cantelope guy

Her paranoia is rewarded somewhat when she returns home to find Sean hiding in the corner with a gun demanding that she help him find Dempsey, to demand answers, and I suppose to also get revenge for kidnapping his ex-girlfriend and framing him for murder.

The Event S1x13 Badass Vicky caught off guard

We do not see Vicky’s mother or son. I wonder if they were out for the day. I do not think that Sean would harm them, but as mad as he is right now you never know. I think that if he were to ask nicely Vicky would agree to help him.

The Event S1x13 Sean with a gun

After all she does not like what Dempsey is doing any more, and she already asked Jarvis to spill the beans to the president. I am sure she was only helping him for the sake of her son, anyway. Are we going to discover one day that her son is one of them, or could he be another hybrid?

The Event S1x13 Will Vicky surrender

I am looking forward to seeing if Sean and Vicky can put aside their differences and troubled history to work together for the good of all humanity and for the good Inostrankans, too. Personally I think they make a hotter couple than do Leila and Sean, and I am hoping for them to get it on eventually.

    4. Thomas, Hanson, Michael, and Sophia
Simon calls Sophia to inform her that Thomas murdered all forty-four of the Inostrankans who refused to follow him. Sophia is very sad to hear this, and she says now they need to kill him. That could not have been an easy order for Sophia to give, but she appears to be a very pragmatic leader.

The Event S1x13 Sophia talks to Simon

The Event S1x13 Sophia learns what Simon did

I wonder what kind of a mother she was to Thomas? From the rain story she told in episode nine I get the feeling that she was pretty hard on him. I also get the feeling that Thomas was the alien version of a wimpy kid. Does Sophia have any other children or is Thomas it?

Thomas bought land and built a neighborhood where all of the Inostrankans he had rescued, fifty-one in total, could live safely, and work on finishing the portal array. I imagine that some of the sleepers who had joined his efforts lived there too.

    The Event S1x13 Thomas neighborhood

We meet a man named Hanson (Jack Stehlin) who burned his face pretty badly at Chernobyl, Ukraine, when Thomas tried portalling uranium. Hanson is working for Thomas, helping him collect the materials he needs for his portal array by laundering money in San Francisco.

    The Event S1x13 Hanson

Sophia knows Hanson too, and she and Michael kidnap him. They want to know where Thomas is and what he is planning to do next. After being roughed up a fair bit by Thomas Hanson admits that Thomas is collecting fuel for the portal. I guess the portal works on uranium because Hanson says that Thomas is going to steal a lot of uranium rods from a nuclear reactor station.

The Event S1x13 Michael finds Hanson

The Event S1x13 Getting answers out of Hanson

Sophia replies that the security at a place like that would be impossible to get through, but Hanson convinces her that Thomas is going to portal into the facility and steals the rods that way. Sophia then does the responsible thing and calls the president to warn him.

The Event S1x13 Sophia learns about the uranium

She tells him about the portal and how it was what Thomas used to move the plane. I think she told him this hoping to try to rebuild his trust. Sophia came to like and trust President Martinez before the plane incident. I believe that he liked her too

The event S1x13 Sophia talks to the president

A little later, Hanson is chained to a pipe in a back room of the house Sophia and Michael are keeping him in. No one is watching him, so he somehow manages to pull out a tiny communications devise out of his neck. It is red and it looks like a board game piece. Hanson stuffs it into his ear. It was sooo gross, but in a cool way.

The Event S1x13 Gross Hanson moment

Hanson uses it to call Thomas to tell him that Sophia took the bait, and the uranium rods are being moved. Thomas then orders Hanson to kill his mother, since we all know the coward could not do it himself. He has all these ambitions to be a leader, but in the end I know that he will fail because he does not have what it takes to truly lead.

The Event S1x13 Thomas talks to Hanson

His plan to trick his mother and to further alienate her from the president’s affections did work well for him. I suppose he is clever, if he is not strong. But if I was an Inostrankan I would choose to follow Sophia and not Thomas. If I was still a detainee I would have pretended to follow Thomas and then I would have acted as a spy for Sophia

The Event S1x13 Hanson in cuffs

Hanson is able to loose himself, and then he attacks Sophia, who is alone in the kitchen. He strangles her with a cord. Sophia does her best to fight him, but she is a politician, after all, not a ninja. If Michael did not arrive just in time to save her she would have died.

The Event S1x13 Sophia fights for her life

The Event S1x13 Sophia struggles for air

Michael shoots Hanson, killing him. While she is on the floor recovering she notices something in Hanson’s ear – the communications device – which tips her off that this was all a trap engineered by Thomas. Hanson trying to kill her may have also given her a clue, as well as his passing along Thomas regards. I consider the ear piece the icing on the guilt confirmation cake.

The Event S1x13 Sophia finds the clue

I never truly appreciated Michael’s character until this scene, but now I love him because he saved my Sophia. *giggles* It seems Sophia also took him for granted because earlier in the episode she thanks him and says that without him they would have never made it this far.

The Event S1x13 Michael comforts Sophia

Was she only talking about their mission in finding Thomas or does she mean the plan in general? I wonder what is their true relationship to each other? Sophia felt quite betrayed by his actions with the plane. Did she feel that way simply because he is one of hers or did she feel that way because he was once much closer to her?

She was angry when Isabel betrayed her, but she did not act hurt like she did with Michael. She did not even want to go to him for help. Not to mention how snippy she was about his daughters. I am not sure that I see anything romantic in their actions with one another, but this is The Event, so anything is possible.

The Event S1x13 Sophia tries to explain

After Sophia learns that Thomas stole the rods she calls President Martinez. I thought she handled the call quite well. She tells Martinez that she will earn back his trust one day, but first she has to deal with Thomas. I have to admit feeling bad for her when the president was so mean to her. With so many characters it seems out to get her when all she is trying to do is keep everybody safe it makes me glad that has a few loyal friends like Simon and now Michael.

  • The Event: And Then There Were More!

The Event: And Then There Were More!

    Hello The Event fans,

The opening scene of this episode of The Event was actually quite beautiful. The Earth in its myriad of blues, greens, and wispy cloud covering is seen coming into view on our screens. It floats in the sea of black dotted with the brilliant stars in the background.

The Event S1x11 - The shining ball that is the Earth

We then see a shiny, intricate satellite floating above the atmosphere, what seems to be sunlight glinting on the satellite’s copper mirrors.

The Event S1x11 - The satellite comes into view

We feel it is like looking at something on NASA TV when suddenly, the satellite explodes into a cloud of shimmering debris. As the scene goes to a night sky on Earth, we see fiery specks fall to the ground. Most if not all the debris would burn up on re-entry to Earth’s atmosphere.

The Event S1x11 - Satellite comes under attack

The Event S1x11 - Satellite is destroyed

I enjoy the way they did this. is was a good bit of ‘eye candy’ for the viewers who would normally not see such a thing. The question still remains, What was that satellite doing?

The Event S1x11 - Satellite becomes debris

The newsmen and women in Detroit, Houston and Denver are seen announcing reports of the strange lights in the sky and assuring us that Amala does not have nuclear capabilities … That the lights were in fact, ‘a passenger jet’ Next we find ourselves in the ‘war room’ with President Martinez (Blair Underwood), Blake Sterling (Zeljko Ivanek) and some other ‘brass’ discussing the ‘sleeper agents and the satellite.

The Satellite, sent by Thomas (Clifton Collins Jr.) one of the Extraterrestrial Biological Entities (EBE’s), sent a seven-second message to their home world. Decoders were able to glean the first line of the message which read “Preparations are being made for your arrival.” Blake Sterling and President Martinez are observed discussing how the EBE’s have an agenda and more interrogation is needed to find out what that agenda is.

By now, the President and his aides know that one of the EBE’s, known as Thomas is behind this accelerated activity. Sophia Maguire (Laura Innes) and Simon Lee (Ian Anthony Dale) are in what appears to be a well-appointed apartment discussing the need to find Thomas and they sound like they would like to stop Thomas from carrying out a plan that they do not agree with.

The Event S1x11 - Simon and Sophia meet

So, it seems there is a little ‘infighting’ among the EBE’s. Sophia and the show leads us to believe she is of Peaceful intent and that Thomas has plans for a ‘portal array’ with which he plans to bring more of their beings to our world. Sophia’s words make one think the others who will arrive have nefarious plans for this world and us.

This reminds me of a Mother and son quarrel, but really, the EBEs have been kept in nothing more than a prison for 66 years. Sophia’s soft handed approach is …in the opinion of Thomas… getting their people nowhere, and he is fed up with waiting on anything to happen for their freedom. Thomas seems to want to take this in hand, bring their beings here to take us over. Sophia, a Motherly figure, is trying to stop Thomas.

We then find ourselves in the Himalayan mountains, Tibet.

Thomas and his companions meet with a man called ‘Brad’ and show him the alien tech-called a ‘Montal’- they brought apparently for use in the Portal array which is located nearby. Brad asks if Sophia knows what they plan on using this for. Thomas’ companion says ‘Now that we have sent the message, she does.’

Brad said “that could be a problem. Most of our people are loyal to her.” Thomas said he has a plan underway to gather a small army of their people. Brad offers to let them see the progress made on the Portal array, and we’re taken to overlook a huge, metallic circular structure on a field below them. They speculate if this will be large enough to bring the others here with it ‘even the numbers we were talking about’ Brad replies ‘Every last one!”

A little different than the usual ‘Invasion’ with a fleet of spaceships. Is this going to perhaps molecular transportation from their planet to ours? In my opinion, this would be an interesting change in the usual genre of Science Fiction.

Alone with Sean Walker (Jason Ritter), Leila Buchanan (Sarah Roemer) looks through many pictures of her father. Her father from the mid-forties to the present day, and this man hasn’t aged at all. Leila does not want to think of what this could mean. We have been shown in past episodes that the aliens do not age as we do. They are only one DNA marker off from what we are normally.

The Event S1x11 - The pictures from the past

As Sean and Leila go through the photographs and papers, they hear someone in the building and after a small chase catch the woman who works in this run-down mental hospital. She is held and questioned by Sean about Samantha, Leila’s sister. “She was taken because she is special- all of the girls are… It’s the reason we wanted you, too… You’re special because of your father! He doesn’t age at a normal rate…”

Sean and Leila press her for details of where the little girls were taken. All she could tell them was they were taken in a white van, that left about 10 minutes earlier to a facility in West Plains. Sean and Leila take off to try to find this van.

Again we are left wondering who or what is behind the girls we’ve seen who look like typical kid, until you see their elderly looking faces. I don’t know, but I think Dempsey may be behind this, but at this point, no one knows for sure.

In the next scenes, Michael Buchanan is being transferred to another prison and their convict transport is rammed into by another car and Buchanan is taken from the scene by Simon.

A widowed Senator Catherine Lewis (Virginia Madsen) from Alaska is meeting President Martinez now. She became a Senator when her husband died and is filling in until the next election.

The Event S1x11 - Coffee with President Martinez and Senator Lewis

The Event S1x11 - President Martinez and Senator Lewis

She has some questions about Inostranka. President Martines takes the papers she hands him, Promptly handing the papers to Rene, a secretary as he is promising to look into ‘Inostranka’.

The Event S1x11 - Virginia Madsen is effective as Senator Lewis
Final pleasantries and she is leaving the Oval Office and asks her aide (Eric) if he had made copies of those papers. He affirms he indeed has, and she said good. Siting she plays poker she tells her aide the President is bluffing.

Sophia, Simon in that nice apartment, along with Buchanan. He expresses remorse about flying the plane, saying ‘they had my daughters…’
“Daughters you were never supposed to have!” Sophia points out. “I sat in a cell for 66 years so you and the rest of our people on the outside could find a way to get us back home, not so you could play house here!…”

Buchanan told how he used his airport connections to get supplies and such to Thomas and the Portal Array. Sophia lays down some orders for Buchanan to follow about finding out who the ‘middle-man’ Michael sent things to was. Michael agrees to help her, but he must find out where Sam and Leila, his daughters are. Based on the investigation of the assassination attempt. Simon tells him all they know is that Leila’s Boyfriend Sean has surfaced occasionally, and as an FBI agent he could look into it.

Sophia interrupts saying “You will do no such thing!” then to Michael, “You will help us and you will do it now without conditions! Do you understand me, Michael?” Michael seems to get a spine and faces Sophia: “You help me find my daughters, and I will help you find your son. Those are MY terms.”

Sophia’s face tells me she understands this is the way it has to be. Michael will not budge Looks like Mother has a strong-willed ‘child’ facing her down. She is not happy, but seems to accept his terms.

Now, Sean and Leila are on a dark lonely highway when they spot the white van. They ram it and have a few vehicular altercations with it and finally cause the Van to go off the road. One could almost hear the axle break on this scene…

The Event S1x11 - The mysterious white van!

Leila and Sean run to the van, make sure everyone’s all right. A passing motorist gets 911 for the accident and they leave the other little girls taking Samantha with them and running off into the night.

A bar in Alaska sees a military man getting a drink sent to him, by an attractive woman with a cane. She takes Lt. Greer (Kirk B.R. Waller) outside on the premise of going somewhere for a romantic interlude. But Thomas ambushes Greer. Lt Greer is now hostage to Thomas and his companion. Thomas tells Greer “You will help us mass an army.”

The Event S1x11 - Blackmail in a bar

Back with Sean and Leila, with Samantha. Sean’s federal agent friend Collier called him and passes a message to him that someone we now know to be Michael Buchanan wants to meet them.

Senator Lewis is notified by Eric that her office is being searched and verified to be clear of any high-security or classified material. Her dead husband had the clearance, but she herself does not. Senator Lewis uses a ruse to get the agents out, by saying there were personal letters of a sensitive nature which she would like to remove first.

The Event S1x11 - Virginia Madsen as Senator Lewis

The agents leave allowing her to do this, whereupon she retrieves paper about Inostranka and leaves. At Mount Inostranka, Director Sterling come in, asking for a private room to conduct interrogations.

The next day, Leila, Sean and Samantha Buchanan (Anna Clark) are at a farm, waiting for Michael Buchanan (Scott Patterson) to meet them there. He arrives and of course overwhelming reunion of Samantha and Michael, Sean and Leila question Michael about ‘Them’ and tells Michael they found pictures of him over past decades. asking directly “Are you…one of …. them?” He could only reply “I’m sorry” as he continued to embrace seven year old Samantha.

The Event S1x11 - Sean wonders if Michael will show up

The Event S1x11 - Sean comforts Leila
How DOES one tell their offspring that they are a hybrid of beings from two worlds? That is one “Talk” I doubt many parents would want to have! But as she’s said, she doesn’t feel any different, or look any different, How would YOU cope if you were told one of your parents was from another galaxy? Granted, sometimes when I was younger, and even today, I think for me, being half Alien would explain a heck of a lot of things in my life.

Back to Mount Inostranka, the snow is thick on the ground and I got cold watching this scene.Thomas and others short out the electric fence, cut through and get to the guard station where they shoot the guards, steal what appears to be credentials. They and some others then hop onto a passing supply truck heading into the base.

Director Sterling is being taken into an interrogation room to see an EBE named Maya. He tells her they decoded the message from the satellite, saying ‘It’s a Status report for a planned invasion.’

The Event S1x11 - Blake Sterling grills Maya

Maya (Clea DuVall) claims to know nothing about this. “An invasion would go against everything we believe in.” Sterling said he could make this very unpleasant for her and there was nothing he would not do to protect his country. She says something telling after that: “You know the irony of it is, it was us who swore an oath to protect You” Sterling expresses disbelief at her words. Citing she killed a fellow detainee on the orders of Sophia.

The Event S1x11 - Maya maintains she means ho harm

She continues ‘To do no harm, to leave this civilization intact. That part of our mission wasn’t violent” “Then… Explain this” He says as he pushes the decoded message toward her.

The supply truck shows up and Lt. Greer clears it to come in. Remember, Greer’s family is being held hostage by Thomas’ goons somewhere. Once the truck is in, the stowaways come out and overtake the guards at Inostranka. Security notes the clocks are all 12 minutes off. they seem distracted by Lt Greer tying his shoe again.

The Event S1x11 - The Camp is infiltrated

It was a distraction to keep the guards from noticing until, too late, that Thomas has now come in to the camp, taking it over. So now, Thomas and some of his fellow EBE’s have control of Mount Inostranka. He is seemingly more bent to violent resolutions and one is left to wonder where and what is next.

Heyla, to all fans of The Event!

And welcome to my review of season one, episode twelve, entitled “Inostranka”. Of the two episodes shown for the mid-season premiere I was given my choice and I chose this one, although I really liked them both, and I was pleased to se e that a few of my many questions were answered. I would not want them to answer every question just yet, but I was pleased with the ones that they chose.

In episode eleven “And then there were more” Thomas (Clifton Collins Jr.) and his army of followers had snuck into the Inostranka facility and so episode twelve begins right where the story left off in the command center with Thomas taking over . Thomas commands Major Pearson to get on the radio so that he could pull the remaining guards of off their posts one patrol at a time. He was to tell them all to meet in the boiler room. Major Pearson asks why?

Thomas says that his men would be waiting there to disarm them. Thomas says that nobody needs to get hurt. Pearson replies that he is not letting Thomas take over the prison, so one of Thomas men cheerfully shoots him. Thomas tosses the radio to a different army dude and says he has been promoted. He then asks him to do what Pearson would not. He says I cannot. The order has to come from the major. Thomas tells him to order a code eight lock-down, which gets all of the guards to the boiler room like he wanted.

National Security Director Blake Sterling (Zeljko Ivanek) is still interrogating Inostrankan detainee Maya (Clea Duvall) She is getting tired of telling him the same thing over and over again, namely that her people are not the type to plan an invasion. She says that her people are moral and good and that they do not do things like that. Director Sterling does not believe her because she killed her boyfriend, William, on Sophia’s order.

Maya looks like she feels guilty about having done this. She says she will have to live with it for the rest of her life, but that bad things would have happened had William been allowed to speak.

Then Sterling shows her pictures of dead bodies from the plane crash, Maya says her people would never do something like that, Sterling tells her what Sophia said about Thomas and he asks her if it is really so hard to believe that Thomas could have done something like this, or that she and the rest of the Inostrankans could all be capable of doing the same. Maya does not know how to respond or likely how to feel or think. I believe her that most of the Inostrankans are good people who would never do anything like this. Thomas is an exception to the rule.

The Event S1x12 Sterling interrogate Maya

The Event S1x12 Plane crash victims

Corporal Bell (Lee Thompson Young, otherwise known as the famous Jett Jackson) comes in telling Sterling that a code eight has just gone out, which means that all detainees are to be escorted back to their cells and that all guards are to report to the boiler room, so that they, too, can be caught in Thomas’ trap. Obviously Bell does not know that it is a trap, he thinks that it is nothing more than a drill. Luckily Sterling refuses to go. He says he is the director of national security and that as such he does not have to stop his interrogation if he does not want to. He overrides the order given and tells Bell to go back to his post, standing guard outside the door. Corporal Bell complies and calls it in on his radio.

The Event S1x12 Look it is the famous Jett Jackson

Thomas did not know that Sterling was going to be there, neither did the army dude who got threatened into helping him. He says that the dead major Pearson would have made those arrangements. Thomas agrees that it is a good idea for Bell to stay put. Thomas wants to make Director Sterling pay for what he has done to the detainees there, so he makes Mr-forced-to-cooperate army dude tell him exactly where Sterling can be found.

Maya is still claiming that her people are not a threat , the way I see it they are both half correct, and if they could each compromise on their stories just a little then they would have a complete truth that they could believe together, but neither one seems willing to do that. Maya asks Sterling what it would take for him to believe her, and he says at the stage we are in now I do not think it is possible for me to believe you. My thought then was why bother questioning her if he cannot trust anything she says?

The Event S1x12 guards with guns
Corporal Bell comes under attack by men wearing uniforms that he does not recognize using weapons that are not army issue. He runs into the interrogation room, slamming the door behind him. Director Sterling takes Bell’s side arm. The fake army soldiers break into the interrogation room but Sterling throws a chair through the window with the two way glass and they all three escape, he has Bell unlock Maya’s cuffs. Then Sterling hides behind the door of the room on the other side of the Interrogation room and shoots both of the fake soldiers through the shattered window. I was quite impressed with his aim.

The Event S1x12 Sterling is a good shot

Director Sterling only wounded the fake soldiers, one of them tells Sterling that they are here to free all of the prisoners because Thomas needs them, and that Thomas wants the director dead. The fake soldier lying behind Sterling shoots him in the back then Bell shoots that guy. Maya escapes, Bell wants to go after her, but Sterling prioritizes. He believes that Thomas must already have the place surrounded and does not believe they will leave there alive, however, he says they need to stop Thomas from leaving with the prisoners. Speaking of prisoners, Thomas’ soldiers release all of the Inostrankan prisoners from their cells.

The Event S1x12 Scary pic of Sterling being shot
At the white house President Elias Martinez (Blair Underwood) asks for a progress report. Do they know yet where message is heading? No. Has sterling learned anything new? They have not heard from him. Where is Michael Buchanan? Well, he escaped and Simon Lee (Ian Anthony Dale) is running point on the investigation. Simon, of course, knows nothing helpful at this time, though he suspect that Buchanan got to one of the guards, which means I must give him kudos because he is helping Sophia, as well as Michael and his family. If most Inostrankans are good, and Thomas is exceptionally bad then Simon is exceptionally good. At least in my humble opinion.

    The Event S1x12 Presidential briefing

    The Event S1x12 Simon Lee

Senator Catherine Lewis of Alaska (Virginia Madsen) visits President Martinez in his office. She accuses him of lying to her about Inostranka. Thanks to the files she was able to sneak out of her late husband’s office she now knows that Inostranka is a prison and not a weather station like President Martinez previously told her. Martinez says the only way she could have gotten this information was by breaking the law, Senator Lewis thinks this is funny because he is currently holding people prisoner illegally. So they stand on common ground here, one cannot get one in trouble without getting themselves into trouble in the process.

The President says he understands her outrage, that he felt the same when he first found out but unfortunately he cannot tell her anything else because he says it is a matter of national security. She tells him that those two words are over used and that his administration has managed to rid them of any meaning. He mocks her for only having held public office for 2 weeks and for not having been elected and tells her to use her final ninety days in office to help the unemployed and the obese. He also says he will eviscerate her integrity the next time she questions his and then tells her to leave his office. I am not certain who won here, or who I wanted to win. I think they were both just doing the best that they could under the circumstances.

    The Event S1x12 President Martinez

At Michael Buchanan’s (Scott Patterson) house? Sophia Maguire (Laura Innes) is there she makes tea for Sean Walker (Jason Ritter) and she says thank you to him for saving Leila’s Buchanan’s (Sarah Roemer) life. She introduces herself and tells him about the crash, what she wants and what Thomas wants, and about their people who are on the way. I think she tells him these things because she is hoping that he will help, but she does not want to ask him directly. She may hope that telling him that his world will be destroyed if Thomas gets his way will be enough to spur him on to action. I think it will, too.

The Event S1x12 Sophia made Sean tea

The Event S1x12 Sean accepts Sophia's tea

Michael tell Leila that he and the other Inostrankans are from a planet that the humans call NGC253 – (why not give their name for it?) He claims they came to earth looking for a new home, but they were found, imprisoned, and hunted. Leila asks if she is human he shakes his head, says she is different even though she does not look or feel it. She wants answers; he promises that he will give them to her, but not now because they have to leave.

Michael then informs Leila that he wants her to come with him, but he says that Sean cannot come with them by Sophia’s orders. Sean cannot know any more about them than what he already does know. If he came it would put them all at risk. Leila says that she does not take orders from Sophia, and Michael explains that he does and that is that.

The Event S1x12 Leila with her father

Thomas speaks to the prisoners. He announces that he has broken away from Sophia and everyone who comes with him must break from her too. He says they should all be free, that Sophia is free but still she asks them to stay. He says Sophia is asking them to put the needs of the humans over their own. Thomas thinks the humans should serve them. Plans are already being made to make a home for them there. He says if you still want to follow Sophia then stay here for another sixty-six years.

The Event S1x12 Thomas addresses the prisoners

One male Inostrankan tells Maya who has found the others that they need to stay to show their solidarity to Sophia. Maya says they need to be smart, who knows what Thomas is going to do they should not turn their backs on him.

The Event S1x12 Maya and another Ino

The Event S1x12 Thomas and the prisoners on the way out

Sterling and Bell discover they have no outside communications; the phone is down and the base communicator is not working either. Director Sterling asks Corporal Bell if there is a failsafe, a way to lock down every perimeter. Bell does not have security clearance for it, but suggests that maybe Sterling does. From the command room Sterling is able to successfully reset the security system to put them into lockdown mode. The army dude who is still being forced to help Thomas is just opening the outside door when the lockdown falls into place; Thomas guesses pretty quickly what happened and he sends guards to the command room with orders to apprehend Sterling alive.

The Event S1x12 Securing the comand center

Sterling and Corporal Bell see Thomas’ guards coming for them on the monitors so they leave and make their way to the armory. On their way they discover that Thomas killed everyone who chose to follow Sophia. The Inostrankan who had advised Maya to stay was still barely alive he tells Sterling what happened. Sterling tells Bell this is not just a prison break it is a coup de tat. Then a few of Thomas soldiers find them.

The Event S1x12 Sterling discovers what Thomas did

Senator Catherine Lewis appears on “Chris Matthew’s hardball” to announce a top secret government program that she has just discovered in her own backyard. As she hopes the president is watching and he is not happy! He actually calls her while she is on a commercial break and as a last ditch effort he says that her husband, Bernard Lewis, knew all about the prisoners from Inostranka and he kept the secret because he knew it was the right thing to do; Martinez tells Catherine that if she truly wants to honor her husbands’ legacy then she will respect the secret that he kept.

She does not buy his argument and she says tell me who the prisoners are and when I go back on the air maybe I will start throwing softballs instead of grenades. But she says, if he does not tell her then she will blow Pandora’s box wide open. The clock is ticking, Mr. President she says, which it really was, she only had a few seconds before she had to go back on the air. The President caves and says, deal. So Catherine goes back on the air and does not say anything about Inostranka. The character played by (Roger Bart) congratulates Martinez on silencing Lewis in time. Martinez believes her silence is only temporary and asks god to help them all when the truth finally does come out.

The Event S1x12 Senator Catherine Lewis

The Event S1x12 Catherine and Chris

The Event S1x12 Catherine on the phone with the president

Leila tells Sean in their bedroom that night that she has to make a choice. Sean says at first he will not leave her, but then Leila explains why he cannot come, and she says that she needs to go with her dad because he has answers. Sean tells her to go ahead, to do what she needs to. Then she says that he is a part of her and how can she choose between him and her father? Sean suggests that they go to sleep for now. He says that they can figure it out in the morning. Then they kiss.

Director Sterling and Corporal Bell are tied to chairs. Thomas tells Blake that he is getting his people out of Inostranka, and Sterling asks why he needs them when he has others coming. He says that they translated the message, and he asks how many are coming and when. Thomas hits him in the mouth. Thomas says I know you changed the code to the gate.

He orders Sterling to spill the new one so that no one else has to die. Sterling claims he has no idea what Thomas is talking about. Then one of Thomas’ friends starts hitting the director again in the mouth. Maya wanders by the command room and sees what is happening. Sterling challenges Thomas by saying that there is nothing he could do to him to make him talk, which I thought was quite stupid, but also brave.

    The Event S1x12 Torturing Sterling

A guard eagerly meets the challenge by pressing his fingers into Sterling’s bullet wound. Thomas tells Sterling that he took away the Inostrankan’s freedom, but now he was bound and determined to get it back for them. Sterling asks Thomas about the detainees he killed who were loyal to Sophia. Thomas does not want to talk about that so he tells Sterling to shut up, then his guard presses his fingers into Sterling’s bullet wound again.

Thomas tells the director that if the next words out of his mouth are not the code he would cover the room with Sterling’s blood. Sterling challenges him to do it. Thomas is about to shoot him when Corporal Bell speaks up and says that he has the code. Blake tries to get Thomas to not listen, but Bell shouts over him saying that he saw Sterling program it into the system. Bell really does have it and soon Thomas is leading everyone outside into the freezing cold snow, he has Sterling by the arm, perhaps to use for ransom or insurance?

The Event S1x12 Maya untying Sterlings hands

Maya sits beside Sterling in the cargo ship, she unties his hands, saying that he must stop Thomas because what he wants will destroy Sterling and his people, but she pleads with him to believe that they all do not want this. She tells him to run, and he does run right past Thomas, Thomas shoots him in the back, his second bullet wound that day. Poor guy! He collapses in the snow. Thomas was going to shoot him again, but Maya shoves past him, so that she can run to Sterling to help him.

So Thomas shoots her in the back. Them someone tells Thomas that they have to go because the next shift of real army guards is approaching rapidly. They take off leaving Sterling alive, he crawls to Maya, and tells her to hold on because help is on the way, her last word is, “believe”. I hope that she just collapsed into unconsciousness and that she will be all right because I really like her character.

The Event S1x12 Sterling running for freedom

The Event S1x12 Maya gave her life for Sterling

Leila wakes up to find Sean has left her. A woman goes to see Dr, Dempsey (Hal Hollbrook) to tells him that Sean and Leila were able to find and free the test subjects. He is quite calm about it. He gets up to play with this weird looking board with crop circles on it. He says that he is sure he and Sean will cross paths again soon in his wonderfully creepy classic villain way.

    The Event S1x12 Doctor Dempsey

And that is where the episode ended. The Event returns to the US this Monday, March 14, 2011 with episode thirteen, “Turnabout”. Please be sure to tune in live because it is going to be awesome! In the meantime we include The Event episode “Inostranka” courtesy of NBC. Enjoy!

Heyla to all of The Event fans!

In anticipation of the new episodes which are returning this Monday, March 07, I am pleased to present to you this somewhat short analysis of episode ten, “everything will change.” This was a very exciting episode that left me with a lot of questions that I am eagerly hoping will be answered when season one continues.

This episode takes us right back to the cornfield where Mr. Berg (Peter Murnik) is laying in the dirt being held at gunpoint by Sean Walker (Jason Ritter) and Leila Buchanan (Sarah Roemer) who really want answers! He tells Sean that he is not going to shoot him in cold blood, and we see Sean really struggling, almost as if Mr. Berg is using some sort of mind control on him. And when Sean puts down his gun and says that he is right, I felt convinced of it, until Sean grabs the syringe that Mr. Berg had brought along to inject into Leila, and he injects Mr. Berg with it instead; which then led me to drop the mind-control idea like a hot potato. The injection causes Mr. Berg to grow very old very fast, and then he cannot breathe very well.

The Event S1x10 The President President Elias Martinez (Blair Underwood) goes back to visit Vice President Raymond Jarvis (Bill Smitrovich). Jarvis, remembering the threats made upon the lives of himself and his family decided against giving President Martinez the name of the man who put him up to trying to assassinate him at Coral Gables back in the Pilot episode. (Doctor James Dempsey) Jarvis pleads memory loss. Martinez does not buy this act, he believes that someone must have gotten to him, and he gives Jarvis an ultimatum, either he gives him the name of the man who wants him dead or he will make sure that Jarvis pays for the crime for the rest of his god given life.

Jarvis does not appreciate being threatened and he turns it back around on the president. It is apparently very important to Jarvis that he remain Vice President, I am sure that staying out of prison or out of the electric chair is also paramount on his mind. Jarvis threatens that if they (meaning Martinez or I imagine anyone connected to him) dares to expose his secrets that he will expose theirs.

He will leak information about Inostranka and the prisoners held there, and he will let the world know that Martinez went along with the cover up. Jarvis claims the president would be eviscerated by the public. He also tells President Martinez that he is just a bit player in the world, and that he is just as vulnerable as any man to the whims of those who possess much more wealth and power than he does.

The Event S1x10 Jarvis and Martinez

It starts to get exciting when a national security emergency arises, and Martinez must return to the White House immediately. The NSA (National Security Administration?) has suddenly discovered a missile installation in a country called Amallah. The builders of it were somehow able to cloak their activities from the NSA until today. The Amallahan government also claims to have been unaware that this was being built on their tribal lands. CIA Director Blake Sterling (Zeljko Ivanek) tells the president that Amallah barely has an air force, so there is no way that their government could have built this. Martinez wonders if terrorists could be behind it, and Sterling replies that this puzzles him because none of the terrorist groups they were currently watching would have been able to secretly built this missile installation either.

While the president and his people are busy talking about missiles, a nice little alien tea ceremony is going on with Sophia Maguire (Laura Innes), Simon Lee (Ian Anthony Dale), Thomas (Clifton Collins Jr.), and Isabel (Necar Zadegan) Everyone makes nice and pretends to get along. Sophia talks about how recently they have all been through some challenging moments, but that they will overcome these challenging moments together. And then she moves onto business and asks now that they have collected the key module what else will they need to rebuild the interface. (I love the terminology used here).

Thomas replies that opening the portal to save her from the plane was an improvisation and that interface is nowhere near powerful enough to get them home, so they will need to build a new interface at the same site in order to take advantage of the infrastructure they have already built there. Then Sophia smoothly segues into the real reason for this party by asking Thomas about the financial records. She had previously asked to look at them, Isabel had given them to her, and today Sophia is just making sure that they gave her everything. Thomas and Isabel lie and say that of course they gave her everything.

The Event S1x10 Alien tea party
Thomas claims he needs to take Isabel back to her hotel. (Does this mean that she lives in another state or town and that she had to travel to attend this tea party?) Sophia starts cleaning up after, and I got the feeling that they were in her home. Simon stays behind and Sophia informs him that Thomas was lying about the records, she did some digging on her own and she discovered that he has hidden funds no one knows about. She says that it is true that Thomas has built a nice little infrastructure through the stock market to help them get home, but he is hiding money for his own purpose with Isabel’s help. She tells Simon to find, Stephen Grant (Timothy James Driscoll), Thomas’ secret banker. Simon is to find out where the money came from, and what Thomas intends to do with it.

    The Event S1x10 Simon

Down in the parking garage Thomas tells Isabel that his mother knows. Isabel hopes that maybe Sophia was just asking, but Thomas says no, that his mother has a reason for everything she does, that she has a reason for every breath that she takes. Then he says that they need to leave so Sophia doesn’t find out what they are doing. If Sophia finds out their end game she will do everything in her power to stop them. Isabel tells him it is too soon that they do not have everything that they need yet, and Thomas says they will figure it out. He tells Isabel that it has already started but now it is time to escalate their plans, and that she needs to be sure before going with him because a lot of people are going to die when they are through. Thomas what on earth are you up to?

Mr. Burk begs Sean and Leila to take him to Willow Brook Behavioral Hospital; he says that this is the only way. I assume he means for him to live, but Paul Stern (Josh Randall), the father of the little girl who escaped from the people that he works for, makes his way out to them. He says that his wife and Abby are in the car and that they are going to leave before the police get there. He tells Sean and Leila that they should just leave everything alone, that there are some things they do not want to know. Then Dr. Berk dies. I think he ran out of air. So Sean and Leila take his electronic key card with the triangle on it and they drive to Willow Brook to see what there is to see.

Dr. James Dempsey (Hal Holbrook) the evil looking man who sent Mr. Berk after Leila, and who seems to be in charge of this really not-very-nice organization that likes to kill and experiment on people, receives a phone call saying that Mr. Berk has not shown up with the new subject; this must mean Leila. Dr. Dempsey replies that if Mr. Berk does not show up within the hour they must assume he has been compromised. Dempsey asks the nurse, who is calling from Willow Brook, about Samantha, and the nurse replies that she is responding better than expected. We see a short glimpse of her in her bedroom/cell scribbling furiously on the wall.

    The Event S1x10 Dr. Dempsey

Sean and Leila arrive at Willow Brook. They walk in through the front door and Leila pretends that a woman named Carolyn Jones is her aunt so they will be allowed to enter the patient wards. Sean searches for a room that fits the keycard he stole from Mr. Burk, but then a security guard catches him, and he kicks both Sean and Leila out. There is a crazy guy who overhears Leila asking her fake Auntie Carolyn if she knows of any little girls living there. When they get kicked out he goes out onto the balcony and he tells them that little girls live under the floor, he can hear them. Leila believes this man, but Sean does not. Then Leila sees a water tower on the roof, and she remembers that Abby told her about seeing a water tower when she escaped.

Simon travels to Winchester, Virginia to find Thomas’ banker dead. It looks like he was shot then his body was left in his bathtub. Simon calls Sophia to tell her. He says there is no sign of forced entry, so Mr. Grant knew his attacker, he says there is no proof Thomas did it, but he and Sophia both believe that Thomas did do it. Sophia tells Simon that Thomas and Isabel have disappeared with the key module. Thomas destroyed the banker’s computer, but Simon will take it to Langley to see what they can salvage. Then he gets called in to work. Sophia puts out word for anyone to contact her if Thomas contacts them –they must find out what he is up to.

The Event S1x10 The banker is dead
Isabel and Thomas find a nice hideout where they can watch the missile launch from Thomas’ laptop. Isabel puts her arms around him and says, “We did it, and now everything is going to change. “ What exactly does she mean by that? Change how? In what way? I hope that we find out when season one returns on Monday.

The Event S1x10 Missile on laptop

The Event S1x10 Martinez in the war room

President Martinez is also keeping an eye on the missile via real satellite imagery on a screen that is slightly larger than Thomas’. He is informed that the missile is uploading propellant to rocket. The rocket is two hours away from launch, the presidents jets will not make it to the installation in time to stop the rocket from launching unless the United States can get flyover permission from the Chinese. A female Aide enters the war room to inform Martinez that the ambassador from Amallah, Mr. Talaky (Bernard White) has arrived. Mr.Talaky explains to President Martinez that the installation was built in a tribal area not under government jurisdiction. He says that their military is mobilizing troops towards the silo, but he can offer no guarantee that they will arrive in time.

He is able to tell the president that the Installation was built by a company that made arrangement with the locals to not cause them any trouble. He says that the company appears to exist in name only. He hands some papers to Blake, it is all the information he was able to obtain about this company. Blake sits down to look it over while President Martinez informs Mr.Talaky that this missile has the capability of reaching the United States with a nuclear payload. The president says that the United States will retaliate against Amallah if the missile reaches us. He says that there is a squadron of F16’s enroute to Amallah right now, and, if their missile strikes his F16’s will attack the Amallah capitol. Mr. Talaky is not very excited about going back to give this news to his president.

While this conversation was going on Blake has a breakthrough. He shows the president the list of the board of directors for the company that built the missile. It is unusually large with ninety-seven members and these members all have the same names as the ninety-seven detainees who were originally held at Inostranka. Blake realizes that the missiles are being controlled by the sleepers. Blake blames Sophia for this while Martinez more correctly blames Thomas.

The Event S1x10 Blake Sterling finds the truth

Sean and Leila sneak back into Willow Brook Hospital at night. They sneak past the man taking out the garbage. Crazy guy said he heard the girls through the floor so they look for a basement, and find an elevator instead. Elevator buttons begin at one, but Sean uses the keycard he stole from Mr. Berk and the card causes the elevator to descend. They walk out into the basement level, everything has been cleaned out. Mr. Berk could not make his appointment, him being dead and all, so Dr. Dempsey ordered everything and everyone to move out. Leila freaks out when she sees the playroom with children’s drawings and toys. She starts running around saying they have to find Samantha even though the place is clearly empty. She does find Samantha’s empty room, however, where she wrote Leila on the wall. Leila is devastated that they arrived there too late.

    The Event S1x10 Leila

Simon eventually learns all about the installation, and he calls Sophia to tell her what Thomas did. Then the missile is launched, the NSA is able to track it, and soon discover that the United States is not its target. No radiation is detected, and they learn that the missile is not carrying a nuclear payload. They pick up a signal, a data burst from the missile. They discover that its true purpose is to be a communications satellite, and that its antennas are situated the wrong sending the signal away from earth. They are contacting home? Sending signal hurts everyone’s ears.

    The Event S1x10 The missile

    The Event S1x10 Communications satelite

Leila and Sean find a room full of burned papers, but they are not fully burned. The fire was likely set hastily. They find a file on Michael Buchanan (Scott Patterson) Leila and Samantha’s father. They find out that he is an alien, and Leila is likely a hybrid, unless of course Michael is not her biological father. I would wager that the girl’s mother was human, and that is why she was killed because she was not interesting enough for them to bother with.

Of course the biggest question is why did Thomas send a signal home? If that is indeed where he sent it? Are there a lot of people who live there? Are they friendly to the ones who left to come to earth? Was he asking for reinforcements for a war? Was he inviting them to all come down and live? Why will this action result in people dying? I can easily see the government deciding to go to war if thousands or millions of these aliens just showed up out of the blue, and were not hiding any longer. Will the aliens start the war? Thomas certainly seems itching for a fight. If they need a new place to live I can understand that, but Sophia seems dead set against settling here. I have a feeling though that after Thomas’ actions in this episode Sophia may have no choice but to go along with the settlement plans. She can only fight so much, after all

    Heyla, The Event Fans!

In anticipation of new episodes returning this Monday, I am pleased to present this short analysis of episode 1×9 “Your world to take.” This episode was one of my favorites because we finally have Sophia Maguire (Laura Innes) out of prison, and we get to watch how she operates and how she leads.

We, the viewers, are privileged to be invited to a Sleeper meeting, where Thomas (Clifton Collins Jr.) re-introduces Sophia as the leader to an untold multitude. They all seem to welcome her enthusiastically and to adulate her, however, after the main meeting is over Thomas sets up a much smaller meeting with a few representatives and Simon.

    https://www.nbc.com/the-event/

Sophia begins this meeting by saying now that President Elias Martinez (Blair Underwood) is aware of the Sleepers presence their days on earth are numbered. From my understanding the main reason that she and the other ninety-seven prisoners stayed at Inostranka these past sixty-six years was so that the sleepers could move about undetected, to be free to find a way home.

As long as the government felt that the scary aliens were all locked up in one place where they could keep their eyes on them they would not be looking for anyone else. This was a good plan, I think, unfortunately, however, while she was locked away Thomas and his girlfriend, Isabel, (Necar Zadegan) have been forging quite a different plan, than what Sophia originally intended.

The Event NBC S1x09 The representatives
Sophia compliments Thomas on the infrastructure he has created to help get them home but says they are still missing many raw materials, isotopes, and rare minerals. She wants to collect the things they were able to salvage from their craft wreck, as well as activate a key module to open a portal. (This just sounds really cool. I love portals.) The tension in the room, while Sophia speaks of going home is soon apparent to her, and so she asks them about it; when no one wants to say anything she locks onto Isabel, (who is first introduced in this episode). Everyone seems to be looking to her to speak, so she tells Sophia that a large number of them have decided that they do not want to go home.

Sophia is sympathetic, but she reminds them all of what would happen to the native populations (without actually saying what would happen), but I wonder if what she is talking about could be The Event? She also reminds them of the directives that they all swore to uphold. She says they are not allowed to harm benevolent civilizations. I am not sure how benevolent we humans are since our government locked away every one of them that they could find just because they did not know who these strange people were. I know that they are aliens, but they are people too.

The Event S1x09 why did they come
Who gave them these directives? Who is not allowing them to harm anyone? What would happen if they broke their promises? Did Sophia create these directives, or did they leave behind a fully functioning government back home who gave the directives to them before sending them off? Is Sophia just the leader of the group who were sent down to earth, or is she the ruler of them all?

Apparently their home planet is barely viable, which may be why they sent this scouting team down to the earth in the first place. Sophia does not make it sound like they were looking for a new home; perhaps they came looking for something they could use to save their planet from dying? There are other issues, a male representative reminds her. What are these issues? What could be worse than your planet dying? Is there some kind of war going on among their people? Perhaps Sophia is head of one particular warring side? Whatever she is, she gives them all her word that they will survive, and that by her orders they are going home. But are they really?

Thomas and Isabel are together, and are secretly plotting something which involves Thomas killing his mother and seizing control. It is obvious that Isabel is manipulating him, but he does have desires of his own. Thomas believes that Sophia is unaware of their relationship, and he thinks she does not suspect him of disloyalty either. Isabel keeps warning him that his mother is smarter than he is giving her credit for. When did the Thomas/Isabel movement begin? And why do they really want to stay? I think it is clear that Isabel just wants power, and Thomas thinks he knows how to be a better leader than his mother. But is it that simple? Is there more to the story? I am quite looking forward to finding out when season one continues.

The Event S1x09 Thomas and Isabel
Thomas and Sophia fly to where the portal opening key module is located. Thomas uses his code and then Sophia withdraws the key. After which, Thomas tries to shoot her, but he cannot do it. Poor Thomas! The timing of this leads me to believe that he needed this key to move forward with his plan and that is why he waited until after she had it to kill her, and also why he fought so hard to get her out of prison if he just wanted her dead. He likely could have had her killed in prison, or he could have just left her in there. But maybe her influence, even from within prison walls was so strong that he needed her dead before he could move on with his plan.

The Event S1x09 Sophia gets the key
I suppose that he may have wanted her out because he loves her, and he hoped that he could reason with her, but when he saw she was determined to force them all home decided then that he had to kill her. And he tried it right after she got the key simply because it was a convenient isolated location. But he does make her give it to him before he tells her to turn around so he can shoot her in the back of the head, so I prefer my first idea. I am hoping this key proves vital in the second half of the season.

The Event S1x09 A viable key

Thomas tells Sophia that she is irrelevant, and that he is tired of standing behind her and her words, words which he no longer believes in. Could all of this be pinned down to alien ideology? Sophia sees through him and says she knows about Isabel. She believes that this was all Isabel’s plan. I think she likely planted the idea in his head, but I think the wanting to take over and be in charge comes from within Thomas. The not being able to kill his mother seems to suggest that this part of the plan was likely Isabel’s dream though, and not his own.

Although there was a part of me while watching this scene wondered if Sophia was not exerting some kind of mind control over him. She did tell him he was weak in the plane. She even intimated that she regretted putting him in charge while she was away. If mind control would work on anyone, I would think it would work on Thomas.

The Event S1x09 Thomas cannot do it

Sean Walker, (Jason Ritter) and Leila Buchanan (Sarah Roemer) get a tip that could lead them to Leila’s little sister, Samantha Buchanan (Anna Clark). For the past two years little girls in between seven and eight years old have been kidnapped without a trace until one little girl, Abby Stern (Ellery Sprayberry) escaped. How did she escape? Was she let go or allowed to escape (like they did with Leila, as a way to trap Sean?) Or was she just very brave and clever? Her mother tells Leila and Sean that she was picked up at a truck stop, and that a driver had given her a ride there. This could have been luck coupled with the kindness of strangers, or it was a setup.

Sean and Leila find Abby with her parents, Paul Stern (Josh Randall) and Mary Stern (Bonnie Root). They are reluctant to let her talk to them, even when Leila says that her sister, Samantha has also gone missing. They follow them to a gas station where Leila finds Abby and the mother inside. Abby recognized Leila’s name earlier and she wants to help although she is not able to say much. Her face has prematurely aged in a rather alarming way, due to these injections she and all the other little girls are given in a hospital that she says is not for regular people.

She met Samantha right before she escaped; Samantha had not been given the injections yet. I hope that when Leila and Sean finally find Samantha that she will be all right, and will have somehow escaped those horrible injections or if she has received them that she will not have aged somehow. I am assuming the aging thing is a bad side effect, but maybe it is supposed to do that?

The Event S1x09 Abby and Samantha

Doctor James Dempsey, (Hal Holbrook) sends Mr. Berg (Peter Murnik) after Leila to bring her back and to give her a dose of something. What is this dose for? What is this all about? The little girls seem to be receiving the same injections, could this be an attempt to try and save either humanity or the Extra-terrestrials from whatever the coming event is going to be?

There also seems to be a scary movement going on here, alien against alien. Could be why Paul Stern did not want to let Sean and Leila talk to Abby. When Sean first sees Mr. Berg at the gas station he believes he is after Abby. When Mr. Berg makes his move, Paul Stern gets in the way and gets himself shot, but the rest of them all run, Mrs. Stern with Abby, Sean, and Leila. We get to watch an exciting chase through a cornfield until Sean knocks Mr. Berg to the ground, and they find a flier in his pocket with Leila’s picture on it. Abby and her mother skedaddle, leaving Sean and Leila to deal with Berg.

The Event S1x09 Mr Berg chases Abby

The Event S1x09 Mr Berg is angry

Vice President Raymond Jarvis (Bill Smitrovich) wakes up in the hospital, his wife, Erika Jarvis (Kathleen Quinlan) by his side. The car bomb that was meant to prevent him from telling the president about Dr. Dempsey failed. Jarvis is still prepared to tell President Martinez all about it when his wife tells him about the two men who came to their house and threatened to harm her and their children. She asks him what he has done, and is quite understandably upset. He tells her he is sorry, but is he sorry for what he did or just sorry for putting his wife and children in danger? I cannot tell.

The Event S1x09 Jarvis and his wife
After Sophia is done comforting Thomas for not shooting her she gets him to tell her all about what he and Isabel were planning, except that he does not tell her everything, as we learn in the next episode. Sophia confronts Isabel, and Isabel shoot herself in the leg. This is the choice given to her by Sophia, she will either shoot herself to prove her loyalty to Sophia, or she would be ostracized, and not allowed to live among her own kind or have any contact with them. Isabel does shoot herself because being shunned would be a worse punishment for her, I imagine. I love Sophia’s parting words to the sobbing bleeding mess on the ground, “And remember this world isn’t yours or Thomas’.” I think that Isabel got off easy, but I do not think that Isabel would agree, and I wonder if she is going to want revenge in part two of season one?

The Event S1x09 Isabel shoots herself

The Event: For The Good Of Our Country!

    Hello The Event fans,

Click to learn more about "The Event" on NBC!

This episode of The Event opens in the White House as President Martinez (Blair Underwood) listens to the morning news. The newscaster tells the world that the crash was caused by a separatist organization, which released a biological agent, necessitating the emergency downing of the Jet. Michael Buchannan (Scott Patterson) died of his wounds suffered in the crash of Avias 514.

Next we go to the ‘War Room’ setting where President Martinez, Raymond Jarvis (Bill Smitrovich) and Blake Sterling (Zeljko Ivanek) talk about capturing Sophia Maguire (Laura Innes), Thomas and the others who are unknown as yet, who they refer to as “The Sleepers”. Blake points out they only knew of all this only days ago, and Vice President Ray Jarvis said this means they dropped the ball.

The Event S2x08 - In the Oval Office

I watch The Event and cannot help but wonder just how the country and the world would react to the disclosure of EBE (Extraterrestrial Biological Entities) actually living among us for what the series has scripted as sixty-six years, or sixty-six days. I was wondering how such a disclosure would be handled, as well as who would do the actual announcement. What this could mean to the world economy, Theology, Psychology of the masses. The fact the Government would know such a thing and we would not is rather disconcerting.

The Event S2x08 - The President wants answers
I recently discovered a book pertaining to this very question called “A.D.-After Disclosure” by Richard M. Dolan and Bryce Zabel. I am planning to begin reading this tomorrow night. I like how this book and the ‘disclosure’ that may be coming in “The Event” actually ties together in a sense.

There follows a scene where Michael Buchannan is in handcuffs and is being questioned by the president about the assassination attempt on he and his family at Coral Gables, FLA. Mr. Buchannan tells the President there had been phone calls and one came in at 1:08 instructing Buchannan to go through with crashing the Avias flight 514 into the resort. Buchannan tells President Martinez “they almost didn’t go through with it”, explaining the people who took him was waiting on a phone call. The call came before they put him onto the plane.

The Event S2x08 - Raymond Jarvis takes Dempsey's call

Flash back to the Day of the plane crash: James Dempsey (Hal Holbrook) is in his study and on his phone, speculating with Raymond Jarvis about the President’s plan to disclose the presence of the aliens. Ray is very hesitant about carrying out the plan, because there are many innocent people…. many of them children involved. Dempsey says they are doing this to prevent something worse. They have to stop the President from releasing the detainees, which Dempsey calls a “Dangerous, unknown enemy into our midst”. Dempsey says the plane will be in the air soon and instructs Ray to leave the compound at Coral Gables.

The Event S2x08 - Hal Holbrook as Dempsey

The next scene is where Sean Walker (Jason Ritter) , Leila Buchanan (Sarah Roemer) and Madeline Jackson (Paula Malcomson) are trying to find out about the list of names and numbers Madeline found among Leila’s fathers’ belongings. Dempsey’s Agents came into the building firing away and trying to arrest –or kill- all inside, but Shawn and Leila got out just as an explosive devise detonated. This was apparently a booby trap the computer guy known as Peter who they were getting help from had set so that all his evidence would be destroyed. Shawn and Leila escaped Peter’s loft and wound up outside on a large rooftop-patio, but there were no signs of any of the agents. They both get to the street and start to walk very fast, as Leila speculates what they are to do now.

The Event S2x08 - Liela and Sean on the run

We notice a figure in dark clothes dropping down from a building behind them, and he shoots Shawn in the shoulder. They start to run and Shawn is hurt. But they hide from their pursuer and clock him unconscious, getting his gun. They hit it out to the street where Shawn gives Leila a crash-course in how to steal a car, and they’re off. Leila want to get help, but they can’t go to a hospital because no one thus far has believed them/ Leila rightfully feels they would not be helped if they went to an Emergency room like any of us might do.

These two are very resourceful. Considering a thief can, in fact steal a car in about 20-30 seconds, I found that to be fairly well played. Given the past history with hospitals in previous episodes, I too would avoid the conventional approach if I could in getting medical help. Leila is refreshingly strong in this series, as most of this type of series has depicted females, especially those who have lost those dear to them as extreme in their anger, or so heartbroken they lose all common sense. Leila seems to be a little of both. So far she has been able to pull some mighty fine escapes off. Shawn Walker seems to keep a clear head, where I would have most likely lost mine by now. Now they have kidnapped a doctor from a nearby hospital and are leaving.

President Martinez in his office, Blake Sterling comes in, Agent Lee is out of ICU and will recover. President Martinez brings up the phone records surrounding the time 1:08, which is when that fateful phone call came clearing the go ahead on Buchannan and Avias flight 514. Ray Jarvis reports in to James Dempsey and says he feel he’s been cut out of the loop. He is showing a lot of fear at being exposed. James Dempsey tells Raymond to make an appointment with his doctor and they will meet up in person, instead of talking on a telephone.

Ray flashes back to the election rally in which he was running against Senator Martinez two years earlier. Ironically, the theme of the rally is “Believe Again!”. This is where James Dempsey and Ray Jarvis discuss bridging the gap to a bi-partisan government.
–Based on the theme of the Event, I liked the use of “Believe Again” as the rally theme. If anyone is into reading about aliens and UFO’s, it is mainly about belief. Even if the writers did not plan that.

The Event S2x08 - The election rally

Back to the Present day, President Martinez is discussing the phone record on the day of the Avias 514 crash. There seems to be a discrepancy in the phone activity of Raymond Jarvis. Martinez instructs Blake to get Ray back to the White house. When they both go to the receptionist, she tells them Ray went to his doctor, but she doesn’t know any other details as he made the appointment himself.
“Find him.” Martinez orders and walks out.

I felt this was a bit lax. If the Vice President is going to a doctor or anything, it usually means the Secret Service would have to clear the building and know what the VP’s plans were. Could this have not been found out by Martinez himself?

Shawn and Leila are with their hostage doctor and they have gone to a pharmacy. The doctor orders supplies and –surprisingly- the pharmacy has everything he needs. Doctor paid in cash, and they come out to the car to find Shawn is no longer in it. One wonders if he left on his own, or was taken by someone.

I was impressed the pharmacy had all the things they needed. It was well done however, and I was still biting nails.

Back in Dempsey’s luxurious study and Dempsey having a silver service of coffee poured for him by his housekeeper, Audra. Once Audra leaves, a man enters with Ms. Roberts saying “Picked her up outside of Houston”. Ms. Roberts comes in and says “I had to take care of a few things. My mother needed help so I… I was going to report in the morning” Dempsey offers coffee, and she declines. As Dempsey puts something into his coffee, he says it is an herbal sweetener. Then tells Ms. Roberts he needs help with a problem. Sounds like he is of course hiring her to assassinate Raymond Jarvis. Because I watched the whole show first, I do suspect that is no ‘Herbal sweetener’.

The Event S2x08 - Coffee with the operative

The Event S2x08 - A chat in the study

Now at the medical center, the Secret Service tells Ray the building has been swept and is cleared for him. They all walk to the doctor’s office and Jarvis goes in alone. He then goes out another door into the back halls of the medical center. We see him in a utility room of sorts and Ms. Roberts comes out holding a gun on him. Two men came in behind Jarvis and one pulls a gun out. Ms. Roberts shoots them both. Holding the gun back on Jarvis’ head and says ‘I want out. Your life for Dempsey’s! You need to come clean, now. Tell them how he was behind trying to kill the President! Dempsey played us both-He sold you and betrayed us, but that is not what this is really about or what he is really after” Jarvis asks “What are you saying?”

The Event S2x08 - At the medical center

Roberts says, “Bury him! That’s the only way either one of us is getting out alive.” One has to wonder what James Dempsey’s stake is in the coming Event. I believe it is more than money, but money is a strong motivator for many, even the very rich as he appears to be.

Leila and the hostage doctor find Shawn in an ally and he is bleeding out rapidly. The doctor instructs Leila as they fight to save him. He used what is called a Marrow infusion to quickly bring up blood volume. I have rarely heard of such a procedure. Of course they save Shawn and he will be OK

The procedure that was used is called INTRAOSSEOUS INFUSION. the process of injection directly into the marrow of a bone. This technique is used in emergency situations to provide fluids and medication when an IV line cannot be used.

The needle is injected through the bone’s hard cortex and into the soft marrow interior which allows immediate access to the vascular system. An IO infusion can be used on adult or pediatric patients when traditional methods of vascular access are difficult or impossible. Often the antero-medial aspect of the tibia is used as it lies just under the skin and can easily be palpated and located. The anterior aspect of the femur, the superior iliac crest and the head of the humerus are other sites that can be used. I was impressed they used this in the show as not many do.

Raymond is under a stairwell and calls the Secret Service to come get him. Then places a call to the President. He is planning to turn himself in. Just as Ray is about to tell Eli who it was behind the entire plot, a blue van parks, driver gets out and walks off, The van explodes. Ray is down on the street.

The Event S2x08 - Under the stairwell

Dempsey gets a phone call from a man who said ‘It is done, but we had to use the backup plan.’ Dempsey says, ‘So Ms. Roberts didn’t come through.’The caller replies, ‘No sir, looks like she killed Lawner and Fulton’ Dempsey; ‘What a shame…. Thank you’ (Hangs up).

Now, during the phone call, Dempsey was placing the dropper of that ‘herbal sweetener’ into his mouth. After he hung up the phone, he got up and went to a mirror. Looking at his reflection, we see a much younger, vibrant James Dempsey, only for a moment. Is this ‘Herbal Sweetener’ not a ‘sweetener’ at all, but a developing youth serum? Could it be that this is a possible reason Dempsey wants the Event to not take place? We already know the “Others” from Inastronka do not age as we do, and they seem to stay the same age for decades. Have a few of the aliens found a way to bring this to us?

I wonder if the sleepers who are living here have found a way for Eartheaon humans to benefit from their technology of regenerating youth. If so, this could net a vast fortune for a rogue group of the EBE’s. It could also make people like Dempsey stop at nothing to keep the aliens’ presence under wraps.

This review is not a recap of The Event episodes two and three. I do not favor recaps. Rather this review is an analysis exploring and evaluating some of the theories of the series tied to the storyline, how well portions of the story arc have been depicted, and what if any relationship The Event has with other series in the past. We will also discuss the quality of the acting, direction, location shooting, cinematography as well as topics anchored in the present which make the series more than believable.

For this purpose we will include select images courtesy of NBC for news analysis and review purposes as well as the promotional trailer for episode four “A Matter of Life and Death”. All told The Event establishes an edifice that is to be admired by Wormholeriders News Agency, so lets begin with a few images of the wormhole in The Event shall we?

The wormhole appears in the desert of Arizona!

However, be warned. Certain parts of the series are discussed in detail and should be considered as spoilers if you have not witnessed The Event for yourself. If you do not enjoy spoilers, you should stop reading now. But first lets feast your eyes on yet another couple of images of the wormhole or something most similar!

Fasten your seat belts, Avias flight 514 out of the wormhole!
The Event is an up and coming series which has continued to reveal what effect aliens are having and have had on our world since their imprisonment some 66 years ago on Earth. With an obvious though not directly stated reference to the alleged UFO crash landing events in Roswell New Mexico circa 1947, The Event builds on that belief held by many on Earth. The Roswell incident has captivated many on our planet for over six decades. The Event dovetails this belief factor in today’s viewers very nicely in the opinion of this reviewer. This appears to be true much to the delight of millions of viewers based on recent ratings discussed at the end of this analysis.

Episodes two and three of The Event are analyzed in tandem herein because in the opinion of this reviewer the first three episodes actually act as a movie of sorts with the typical two hour duration. Some commented to me on Twitter that they could not understand what was happening in the pilot. I have watched the first three episodes several times and am convinced that they could be viewed back to back to back to help truly internalize the series single effect to date for those who where not clear on what occurred. Viewing in such a fashion helps sets the tone for what is to come. Fortunately for The Event fans, DVR technology and on-line viewing at NBC allows for just that!

The Event Pilot - An obvious Wormhole?
On a side topic, for anyone to assume that humankind is the sole type of intelligent life in the universe is being naïve in the opinion of this reviewer. As recently discussed in our new WHR Science Series, our gifted science writer RedOne68 (Sandra) has produced two fine articles. One is on the subject of life elsewhere in the universe and one is about wormholes. You can read Sandra’s latest article on life in the universe by clicking this hyperlink.

The Event story arc strays from the Roswell incident in New Mexico events in a major way. In this excellent rendition of aliens among us, broadcast on NBC in the United States, the discovery of extra-terrestrials occurs on November 02, 1944 in the Brookes Mountain Range in Alaska (a real place from the real world), some three years before the oft reported Roswell incident. The Roswell incident looms tall amid ongoing, yet unproven, claims of a government cover up ever since 1947 by conspiracy enthusiasts, many of whom may very well be correct in such beliefs.

Happenings at the Brookes Mountain Range in The Event
The basis for such lack of trust in governmental agencies far pre-dates current events and is therefore a solid cornerstone of The Event story arc which continues to be revealed in a series of flashbacks during episodes two and three. As previously mentioned in our first review of The Event, this is a time honored technique in story telling dating back to the earliest years of recorded human history, specifically in modern times as a technique in literature and film.

In episode two, we learn that that during World War 2, an “aircraft of undermined origins” crashed in a remote area of Alaska with 97 survivors not of Earthly characteristics. Being on a war footing, the United States military and “Intelligence” agencies quarantines the area, ‘apprehends’  the 97, but those are not all the survivors. The able bodied leave the crash site while character Sophia Maguire portrayed by Laura Innes prepares the wounded whom are to be interned. The question then becomes where did the others go and what are they going to do in our society?

November 02, 1944 in the Event

Crash site November 02, 1944 in The Event

Devastation & injury at 1944 crash site in the Event

The 1944 allied armed forces are coming in The Event!
Initial scientific observations conclude that the non-humans appear to age at a dramatically slower rate than humankind. How much slower than humans the alien’s age leaves open the potential (in the story) that the aliens may have been living on planet Earth for a very long time until the capture of the 97 in 1944.

Just how long the aliens have been on Earth remains to be revealed in future episodes. In the episode two, a briefing to President Martinez (Blair Underwood) occurs over 65 years later. During the briefing the topic turns to the aliens DNA which has been sequenced. This proves the early 1944 hypothesis that although quite similar to humans, they are in fact alien in nature, not of the Earth.

The President will demand answers in The Event

An end of plausible deniability in The Event

The President about to be briefed in The Event
During the current day briefing which tracks the electromagnetic aspects of The Event, a flashback from 13 months earlier is played out that reveals photos from various decades illustrating the aliens whom have hardly aged in their 66 years in captivity by “Intelligence” and military divisions of the Unites States government. The current day President is astounded by these disclosures after the fact and asks “why” the aliens are being detained? Once again the real world ‘plausible deniability’ routine makes for believable story telling. Why? Many politicians throughout history claim to be unaware of various situations being managed by their subordinates.

During these sequences we also are afforded the opportunity to see more of the President’s cabinet in action including Bill Smitrovich (Thirteen Days, Independence Day, The Practice) portraying the Vice President, Raymond Jarvis. Politics aside, Bill Smittrovich’s role is quite similar to the actual reality of today’s White House with Vice President Joe Biden as the seasoned politician whom was to aid the younger Barack Obama as President. This parallel makes the story more believable by tying the plot to real world scenarios that the viewing audience can relate to.

President and Vice President are briefed in The Event
In true to life revelations to the President, the intelligence and military agencies whom have been charged with detaining the aliens since 1944 state that the aliens have a “hidden agenda”. Well of course they do!  Why else would they be detained? Or could it be that the governmental agencies suffer from good ole’ human paranoia? Well, we will leave that theory alone for the time being, but I can assure you that the “hidden agenda” is a most effectively implemented in The Event.

Hidden agendas and different physiology in The Event
With the majority of the aliens in the series (apparently) located in a secure facility in Alaska known as Mount Inostranka, it is discussed that various other factions of the aliens are operating in our society and or have operated and infiltrated our society for many years. No doubt these are the individuals whom were not hurt and escaped the 1944 crash in Alaska.

How far have they are penetrated into our society or how long they have been here has not yet been revealed.  However, we do know that at least one of them escaped the detention facility previously. Where there is one whom has escaped, there are likely to be many in the theory of The Event as I interpret them.

We then segue to the series protagonist Jason Ritter portraying Sean Walker in a Yuma Arizona hospital after learning that his girlfriend and fiancé’ Leila Buchanan, portrayed by Sarah Roemer, was not erased from the timeline but was instead kidnapped as a bargaining chip to force the father, Michael Buchanan (Scott Patterson) to crash the airliner into the press event to stop the disclosure to the general public about the alien presence here on Earth.

This aspect of The Event plot is reminiscent of a classic series “The Invaders” circa 1967-1968 where protagonist Sean Walker is akin to architect David Vincent portrayed by Roy Thinnes who knows the secrets of the aliens but is not believed by people he comes into contact with, at least not at first in both series. The Event does an awesome job in this regard.

The initial story arc in The Event is therefore one proven to be highly effective in the entertainment industry, particularly in science fiction; Various alien factions involved with our society in various governmental institutions, each with their own agenda at work. This of course must also delight conspiracy buffs who believe that our rapid advances in technology are due in part to alien knowledge being imparted to select governmental agencies operating Area 51 in Nevada.

Click to visit the stupendous SyFy!Speaking of “The Invaders”, earlier this year SyFy ran “The Invaders” as an all day marathon for two days. I cannot help but believe that “The Invaders” marathon on SyFy was a test of the viewing audience, their enjoyment of this type of series, and whether or not the viewing public would ultimately accept “The Event”. Of interest is that SyFy recently ran “The Event” series pilot to expose their viewers to the series. Is this all a coincidence? Hardly. It represents a well planned market research technique (in my opinion) that NBC Universal should be complimented on.

Back to The Event; In the hospital after the crash of the airliner in the Arizona desert (subsequent to being transported in what I can only describe as a wormhole effect), we learn that the protagonist Jason Ritter who plays the character Sean Walker, has been framed for the murder of a passenger on the cruise ship where he and Leila Buchanan (Sarah Roemer) were vacationing.

Flashback to happy times on cruise ship in The Event

Flashback to happy times on cruise ship in The Event
In a bizarre but effective twist of plot, when he sincerely wants to disclose what is occurring to law enforcement, we find that he is wanted for the murder of an acquaintance on the cruise ship. Obviously some organization has the ability to affect changes to the computer records. Are they human or are they xenophobic alien factions? Could both be at play? My theory says yes, both are involved to some extent and here is why.

As the “The Event” tale unfolds in episodes two and three, we continue to see flashbacks to the happenings from the pilot episode. Specifically we learn about what the xenophobic factions here on Earth are willing to do suppress the ‘secret’ from being revealed to the general public. This includes attempts at mass murder to apparently extinguish the witnesses. These attempts fail. Quite deliberately by the way. More on that later.

As mentioned, the extent of their xenophobic activities also include kidnapping and murder to stop the truth of an alien presence from being revealed to the general public by the President portrayed by veteran actor Blair Underwood. The xenophobia is a two way street in The Event, human paranoid of alien and visa-versa!

Sophia photo 1986 & 2009 proof of an agenda in The Event
To coin a phrase, the event’s revealed so far include when the President released the de-facto alien leader Sophia Maguire to make a public announcement which set off the entire set of spiraling story arc plot twists in the pilot episode. These flashbacks continue to fill in the story-line unabated through episode two and episode three.

Keep reading and that theory will be divulged or debunked depending on your perspective. During a one on one discussion between Sophia Maguire and the President, she discloses that it was they who saved his life in the first episode when the wormhole appeared in front of the jet airliner just prior to being used as a weapon of mass destruction. The President requests to know how the plane instantly disappeared from the viewing audience’s perspective and appeared in the Arizona desert as depicted above and below.

Heading for crash landing in Arizona in The Event

One theory is that the attack on the airliner (after being transported to the Arizona desert) may not be humans trying to suppress the news of aliens on Earth, but could in fact be aliens whom have infiltrated ‘black ops’ intelligence divisions of the United States government that do not desire their presence and or agenda to be revealed.

Black Ops attack on survivors in the Event

When Sophia declines to comment, the President informs her that she and her kind will be returned to the Mount Inostranka detention facility indefinitely. When Sophia declares that such would be a mistake, we are left wondering what else she knows and who of her kind are responsible for what happenings in The Event.

The President threatens Sophia in The Event

Sophia warns the President in The Event
In our first review of the Event I discussed a changing in the time-line from the wormhole effect. I stand by my theory that changes to the time-line are occurring or being affected for as yet some fully explained reason. While apparently not the same type of time-line changes as in Eureka, Fringe or Stargate, nonetheless the movement of an airliner such a vast distance to save the President and all at the press conference is a change in reality with far reaching consequences affecting the President of the United States and perhaps our entire world!

The Event has direct effect on The President

As episode two draws to a conclusion, in a fateful and telling flashback ten years back in time, we learn that Agent Simon Lee (now on the President’s staff) portrayed by Ian Anthony Dale, is an alien when after a blood test he removes a synthetic vein from his arm used to trick the nurse and hence the blood test required for admittance to the Central Intelligence Agency.

Agent Lee ten years earlier in The Event

We learn Agent Lee is actually an alien in The Event

This scene provides proof to the viewers that the aliens are in fact infiltrated into our government. Ironically it is agent Lee who is then tasked by Blake Sterling, the President’s advisor (Zeljko Ivanek) to root out all the aliens!

Blake Sterling says root out the aliens in The Event
Instead Agent Lee meets with alien brother “Thomas” (Clifton Collins Jr.) who after a hug informs him that “they” have “plans” to use the passengers, give him coordinates, and that Agent Lee will find out what when he gets to the Arizona desert.

A little alien hug before disclosure in The Event

Thomas 'you will find out when you get there' in The Event
Upon arrival in the Arizona desert Agent Lee finds that all the passengers are dead, but were killed after the fact, not from the airliners crash landing! They were apparently killed by a sinister force while either trying to escape or when protecting loved ones during what appears to be their final moments alive on planet Earth.

Victims in the Arizona desert in The Event

Before we proceed, a few asked me why if I think so highly of The Event did I give it an “A Minus” grade in the first review at WHR? I focused on their opinions due to the fact that the ‘sell’ to the general audience requires three episodes to really “get” ones head around what is happening. Because of the extensive use of flashbacks to fill in the back story, some found it hard to follow. I heard these constructively critical comments and internalized them. Perhaps it is easier for me to “get” The Event from my acting and entertainment service background to understand that episodes one, two and three were more like acts such as in a well delivered stage play. Each is needed to provide a full single effect for the viewing audience.

Let us now briefly discuss the acting, direction by Jeffery Reiner, special digital effects team lead by Gary D’Amico, and location shooting. The ensemble cast is superb as has been the direction, the writing, the location shooting, computer generated graphics, and the cinematography by Feliks Parnell throughout the first three episodes. Show runner and creator Nick Wauters is to be complimented for assembling such a fine team. I expect my grade to change to a straight “A” once the series resumes in episode  four “A Matter of Life and Death” after the setting of the foundation in the initial three.

Agent Lee at the scene in Arizona in The Event
Additionally the ensemble cast is supplemented with effective guest stars including D.B. Sweeney as “Carter” (24, Life as We Know It, and Jericho), Heather McComb as Agent Collier (Prison Break, Profiler, and X-Files), and Gabriel Olds as Agent Spencer (the Mentalist, Charmed and D.C.). The Event includes many other fine guest actors and actresses. It is these performances which help create the sense of realism that is The Event.

The bodies of the jetliner passengers from the wormhole transported airliner which suddenly appeared in Arizona appear to be dead! Despite the depiction of all the people massacred when attack helicopters used something, perhaps a nerve gas, a conspiracy is afoot! Appearances can be deceiving, yet in in the eyes of the President, when he arrives on the scene with his adviser’s, is that the passengers certainly look like the victims of a massacre.

Victims from the flightin the Arizona desert in The Event

The President and Blake Sterling in The Event

Picking up the 'dead' in the Event

The President demands answers in The Event
Jumping ahead to the very end of the third episode, the victims are observed at the end of episode three in a hanger serving as a makeshift morgue. To our utter surprise and relief all are observed waking up from being “dead”! How in the world were the deaths feigned? We do not know. In any event, the scene and angle of filming is brilliant. Why else would people (humans) be resurrected from the “dead” if not for the purpose “Thomas” has alluded to to alien brother Agent Lee? What technology is being utilized to resurrect the dead, and who in our infiltrated government is responsible? Let’s move back a bit in the story to analyze the why shall we?

We quickly learn in episode three that there is a cover up of some sort. This enactment fits nicely with the viewers whom distrust government, a fact directly related to public sentiment in the United States and most of the world after the economic disasters of the past several years (for starters) . One of the passengers aboard the cruise ship is suspected by the protagonist Sean Walker of being part of the conspiracy. This character is later revealed in both name and deed.  Later Sean is befriended inadvertently by Agent Collier whom begins to believe his fantastic story. Prior to that, thinking she has fooled Sean Walker, she calls for backup when he leaves the motel room.

Agent Collier calls for backup in The Event

Sean Walker escapes the backup in The Event
In the meantime, the aliens or human xenophobic persons working the kidnapping once again resort to murder when a police officer is killed during a routine traffic stop. We then see that it is the same woman, Vicky Roberts (Taylor Cole) from the cruise ship. And guess who is in the back of the van? Yep, its Sean’s girlfriend Leila Buchanan!

Evil Vicky Roberts about to add to her list in The Event

Poor Leila Buchanan in back of the van in The Event

Vicky Roberts murders the traffic officer in The Event
Meanwhile our hero, Sean, has been thinking several steps ahead and observes his plan working. He secrets himself in the trunk of Agent Collier’s car to gain access to the computer room at her headquarters after also having stolen her netbook computer which she states will only work when logging in plugged directly into the network at her headquarters. This was a weak technical detail that caused me to keep my grade from straight “A” status through episode three. Today’s computer encryption technology allows a secure login from anywhere in the world. Perhaps I am being harsh with 30 years of computer experience?

Anyway, so far so good for Sean. However in the story he does not think far enough ahead and is captured. But not until he has attached the computer to the network, uses face recognition technology and uncovers the truth about Vicky Roberts. Agent Collier is there to see that there are literally no less than seven fake identity driver’s licenses! Based on the reality today of identity theft and bogus ID cards, this scene is more than believable, artfully depicted by the director in several cinematic sequences. It is obvious Agent Collier now begins to truly believe what Sean has been saying since the beginning.

Oh and I left out a ‘minor’ detail. The President calmly informed Sophia that of the 97 detainees, one would surely be willing to make a deal for their freedom if she was not willing to cooperate. Sure enough we return to this in episode three when alien “William” played by Omid Abtahi apparently turns on his race and his leader Sophia so long as his alien girlfriend’s freedom from the Inostranka detention facility is part of the deal. Much like any group in real life being detained, there is always someone willing to cut a deal to save themselves at the expense of others.

Sophia is told that someone will talk in the Event

The President tells Sophia someone will talk in The Event

William turns traitor to dave his skin in the Event
We will leave that fact of life where it is and return to a quickening paces of action in The Event. Our erstwhile hero Sean Walker and the lovely Agent Collier, who by now has figured out that some rather odd “black ops” are part of the equations is surprised when two “agents” from Washington D.C. show up unexpectedly at her field office to take custody of Sean. Sean sees the goings on through the blinds in Agent Collins office. A very effective cinematic sequence by the director placing the viewer in the perspective of the intended victim is utilized.

Fake agents arrive to take custody in The Event!

Excellent direction provides perspective in The Event!
We flash to the poor kidnapped Leila Buchanan now being held in a shipping container bound for lord knows where. She briefly attacks Vicky Roberts and informs her that Sean will never stop looking for her.

Back to Sean and a shootout at the field office ensues when they are suspected of not being who they claim. What series of any type would be complete without a little gun play? The agents are of course fakes designed to eliminate Sean from the situation. The fight sequence is well staged and believable. One bad guy is killed and our hero Sean whacks the other. Agent Collins and Sean Walker escape in the bad guy’s vehicle to fight another day!

As we reach the conclusion of the third episode, turncoat alien William is killed by his Alien girlfriend “Maya” whom is delivered to him as “part of the deal” he made to turn on his own kind and leader Sophia. Reflective of most underground organizations, unfortunately for William, the girlfriend remains loyal to the alien cause and count of the aliens under government control in The Event is now reduced to 96 when William crumples after being stabbed to death by his lover. We know then that they are not immortal as William pays the ultimate price for his treachery.

We end this review where I started the analysis of episode three, the makeshift temporary morgue in a military hanger of unknown location. One by one the so-called dead passengers wake up from the dead in a display of alien prowess. The is the question that will be answered in episode four of The Event according to the trailers I have seen.

The Event returns this Monday evening October 10, 2010 on NBC at 9 PM (east / west) in the United States. Good news for the series is that “The Event” has also been announced for premiere in the United Kingdom. We suggest that you tune in to another epic science fiction series unfolding before our very eyes! Your support during the first eight episodes will affect ratings and whether or not we will be treated to more of The Event!

As The Event on NBC is preparing for its fourth episode, half of the episodes produced to date, the series garnered a recent 6.8 viewing rating from the trusted ratings firm Nielson’s. Quite respectable for a new series against stiff Monday evening competition. Nielson’s also provides ratings with time shifted DVR viewing as well as “live” viewing that more accurately reflects how well a program is doing and whether or not a series will survive. The audience for The Event may be considered niche by some in prime time standards, however science fiction series such as Star Trek and Stargate were also considered niche and are now entering their fifth and seconds decades respectively.

I for one am hopeful that NBC will order the back end of “The Event” season one in order to produce a full season of episodes. Why? Because the series (over the first three episodes), has struck a chord about the fascinating subject of whether we are alone in the universe and whether or not visitors have been here on planet Earth now or in the past.

WormholeRiders. Click to visit & follow WHR on Twitter!Lastly, the fact that a major American network studio have ventured into the realm of science fiction for new prime time weekly episodic series is welcomed by not only many fans of this genre of entertainment, but by WormholeRiders around the world as well. Therefore we reiterate, tune in again Monday October 10, 2010 at 9 PM local to watch The Event live!

With that said, each episode also stands alone segueing the single effect to a purpose which is simple. The second and third episode effectively establishes the foundations of the story arc being depicted for the viewing audience. In subsequent weeks, now that the foundations have been established, we will resume weekly analysis of “The Event”. Courtesy of NBC we include the promotional trailer for “A Matter of Life and Death”

    Welcome Caprica and Battlestar Fans!

“Rebirth” wClcik to visit Caprica on SyFy!as the first new episode of the Caprica series after the pilot. The wait was over finally and has been well worth it!

It has almost been one series month now since the bombings that took the lives of many including Real-Zoe, and two series days since U-87/Zoe last talked to her friend Lacy Rand, which was the ending moment of the pilot episode.

The opening sequence reminded me of the first Mass Effect Xbox 360 game with that red, flashing effect and the splicing in of technology that was shown to the game player in the Prothean beacons, ironic timing since Mass Effect 2: “Fight For the Lost” was a sponsor of tonight’s episode.

Editors Note: As is clearly written within the Caprica story-line, the original Battlestar Galactica, and the re-imagined BSG, the people of this “Galaxy of Worlds” believe in many gods. This review focuses on the various aspects of religion. However WHR does NOT favor one belief (or lack thereof) over the other. The discussion herein is for news analysis purposes only. Thank you.

I immediately made the trinity connection (which is later affirmed by Lacy Rand). Trinity in Catholicism is a Father, Son and Holy Spirit (or Holy Ghost). However, they are not three principles of creation but one according to that faith. WHR does not venture into religious discussions, but the analogies within Caprica is appropriate for the purposes of this review. Team WHR supports each persons personal right to believe in a faith of their own choosing or for those whom do not believe, in their right to choose not to believe and respect them as well.

Lacy Rand Rebirth. Click & visit Caprica on SyFy

Editors Note: However, this is delineated by analogy within the Single Effect of Caprica episode “Rebirth”.

Each divine person performs the common work according to the unique personal property. In short, within this episode, everyone who glorifies God does so through the Son in the Holy Spirit; everyone who follows Christ does so because the Father draws him and the Spirit moves him. The mystery of the Holy Trinity is the central mystery of the Catholic faith and of Catholic life. God alone can make it known to us by revealing himself as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Inffinity STO. Click & visit Caprica on SyFy

The analogy of the “Incarnation of God’s Son” reveals that God is the eternal Father and that the Son is co-substantial with the Father, which means that, in the Father and with the Father, the Son is one and the same God. The mission of the Holy Spirit, sent by the Father in the name of the Son and by the Son “from the Father” reveals that with them, the Spirit is one and the same God. We worship one God in the Trinity and the Trinity in unity, without either confusing the persons or dividing the substance. The religions that split off from the Catholic Church during the Protestant reformation still believe in this concept. In Unitarianism, the belief is in one deity/one person; some other religions believe in one deity/two persons, and some believe in the Oneness belief like the Church of Latter Day Saints where God is three separate beings who are one in purpose instead of essence.

In Monotheistic religions like Judaism or the Muslim faith, the belief is in only one deity or one prophet. These beliefs are every bit a personal choice and valid to the believers of these faiths. WHR is not comparing, nor stating one  is “better than the others”. Quite the contrary. Our only editorial purpose is to analyze the multiple deities as are represented in the Caprica story.

Aside from the “faith” or lack thereof discussion, I very much enjoyed the inter-cutting of the robot version of Zoe (U-87/Zoe) and Allesandra Torresani, the actress, who plays Zoe (both real Zoe and virtual Zoe). It allows you to sympathize with the robot and the character trapped inside.

U-87/Zoe struggles with her identity. What exactly is she? A poignant moment occurs while U-87/Zoe is being transported in a van and she is entombed. . I felt the anxiety rise up in my own body, wondering if she was also struggling to breathe. Does Avatar Zoe know what it is like to breathe air? Or perhaps the electrical impulses and feelings of breathing air were passed from Real-Zoe to Avatar-Zoe during a biofeedback loop?

Panicking, she struggles to free herself from the bonds that hold her in place. When Phil, the technician who is kind to her, approaches and shows her that he wants to take out the Meta-Cognitive Processor (MCP), she lifts her head to allow him so he can end her nightmare. Back in the lab, technician who treats her like a machine, but to our eye is abusive, sees something is wrong with the plating on the chest and grabs a drill with one hand and her neck with the other. I wonder, “Does she feel pain now?” In fear, U-87/Zoe reacts swiftly and slices part of his finger off. Although I cringed, I secretly thought, “He had that coming to him.” U-87/Zoe reaches up to wipe her face and touches real human blood for the first time, not the virtual blood she saw in the virtual club in the pilot episode.

Daniel Graystone. Click & visit Caprica on SyFy!

Daniel Graystone is supposed to be a genius. When confronted with the information that when the MCP is placed inside another identical robot body, they act differently from the original alpha design, becoming “morons” as his colleague describes. My scientific mind would instantly know that the difference between those other robots and the alpha model was the downloadable Zoe avatar. The key must be there. However, it takes Daniel almost half the episode to verbalize these thoughts. That seemed out of place.

Amanda Graystone is still struggling with her daughter’s double life. She leaves a pyramid game and watches old videos of Zoe. Through Agent Durham, she discovers Zoe had a boyfriend named Ben Stark. Visually subtle, after Amanda closes the door, the shadow of Agent Durham is shown with his head down. I believe he feels sympathy for this woman, this mother, as he seems to know more about Zoe’s life than she.

Amanda subsequently seeks Lacy out. Lacy shares that she did not know why Zoe wanted to leave, but that Zoe said they were going to have a new family on Gemenon. The disbelief of Zoe’s secret life grows in Amanda’s mind. Frankly that has to be a tough thing for a mother to hear, that you hate it so much where you are, you want to go live with another family somewhere else. I remember verbalizing this to my own mother, but my life was very different from Zoe’s life.

Polly Walker does a brilliant job at playing creepy Sister Clarice, headmistress of Athena Academy. Accepting Sister Clarice’s invitation, Lacy stops by for lunch. The writers now introduce us to the concept of group marriage. This group marriage appears bisexual as Clarice is married to at least 3 women and 4 husbands that I could count, including Nestor, who flirts with Lacy. Desiree Willow, one of Clarice’s wives, is where she gets her surname.

Wife of Clarice Click & visit Caprica on SyFy

Another wife, who appears pregnant with perhaps one of her husband’s child, confronts Clarice afterwards about Nestor’s suspicious flirting, but I believe she thinks Clarice is wanting to bring another into their group marriage. I am not certain yet whether the rest of the people in the house are part of the Soldiers of the One (STO). Nestor and Clarice were manipulating Lacy to see if they could get information about Avatar Zoe. Nestor is part of STO; I’m certain of that. Being a true friend, Lacy does not break her promise to Zoe, and remains silent. Clarice appears to have a drug problem in the past. Later on she visits a bar where one can smoke drugs legally and breaks her sobriety.

Back at home, Amanda sees U-87/Zoe for the first time. She remarks it reminds her of a science fiction horror show she watched. Zoe is offended deeply by her reaction. Meanwhile the dog sits right in front of the U-87/Zoe. Dogs always know, don’t they? If a dog can sniff a terminator dressed up like a human, why can’t a dog sniff out a human stuck in a machine? Good dog, Caesar. Amanda wants to go to the memorial. Daniel does not (but later changes his mind).

Amanda goes back to watch videos and sees the infinity pin, the symbol for STO, on Zoe, and is visibly shaken. Daniel tell Amanda he will go to the memorial service. Daniel uses humor to brighten up a emotionally tense moment. He tells her that he promised Serge some time alone with U-87 (Zoe) because he has a little crush, that it is not a pretty thing, but they need some time alone. Hmmmm… Serge crushing on a Cylon? Now that is a “RO”mance I can get behind! Perhaps Serge knows Zoe is in the robot?

I loved the portrayal of Serge (the Graystone’s personal robot). He is programmed to respond, when Daniel scores a basket in pyramid, “The crowd goes frakking wild. They are tearing up the seats. It’s bedlam. They demand another hour of game play, sir.” He can be my cheerleader anytime.

As kids, Sam and his brother, Joseph, would try to pick up people, Sam flirting with the guys while Joseph would wind up with the sisters of those guys he did meet. Sexuality is not the controversy in the Caprica universe that it is on Earth. Sam is teaching Willie the ways of gangster life, teaching him tidbits of wisdom. He advises Willie, “If someone tries to make you feel guilty, you figure out what they feel guilty about and you talk about that.” Willie uses this later against his father when confronted about skipping school and being grounded. He says to his father, “It’s hard to be part of a family when there is no family, but you can punish me if you want.” As this is what fuels Joseph’s guilt, it has the desired effect: Joseph stops him, reaches out to him and pulls him in for an embrace. William Adama (eventually to be Admiral Adama in BSG) flashes a triumphant smile.

Along the head of her bed are dragonflies. Dragonflies symbolize many things to many cultures, but in Native American culture, they believe dragonflies are the souls of the dead. In general, however, they represent renewal, positive force and the power of life. It can also symbolize change. Since the cycle of the dragonfly’s life is short, it lives life to the fullest which is a powerful lesson. It echoes Zoe’s last email to her mom, to not live life with regrets.

As I woman, I appreciated this first question to Lacy, “Do I look male to you?” I laughed. Lacy is honest with her, as all good friends should be. U-87/Zoe sounds like she disapproves of what her father did, feeling reassured that he would not be putting any more of her avatars into other robots. Zoe is hurt that her mom called her a monster, but Lacy laughs, “to be fair…” U87/Zoe reaches out her hand and embraces Lacy, the act of the embrace being one of love and acceptance.

Daniel and Amanda arrive at the memorial service. He acts her if she wants to speak at the podium; she is not ready for that. She would like to talk to the other parents from the school; he thinks she probably should not because it will be hard to get her away from this with Amanda winding up being the shoulder to cry on. Amanda is having difficulty remaining detached as Daniel prefers.

She meets Ben’s mom, Natalie Stark, who gives her some of Zoe’s things and tells her how much Ben loved Zoe. Among her possessions was a book entitled, “The Physics of Religion and Spirituality: A Caprican Approach”, and a pin, which Amanda expands out, turning into the infinity pin, the symbol of the STO. Amanda flips out and goes to the podium.

At the memorial service, Joseph finally meets up with Daniel who has been ignoring his calls and home visits. Joseph wants to see Tamara. Daniel tells him that Tamara’s avatar did not just “disappear” when Joseph pulled off the holoband; he left her alone in the dark place by herself. Joseph becomes distraught, but Daniel’s ear is pulled elsewhere as he hears Amanda at the podium: She tells everyone she did not know her daughter, that she led a whole other life that she knew nothing about, and that her daughter was one of the terrorists. U-87/Zoe is watching this on her computer sheet (screen) at home from her room. Amanda apologies to the crowd, but the crowd becomes enraged. She is whisked off in a car.

Daniel & Amanda under attack. Visit Caprica on SyFy

The first time through watching was an “Oh my God, what did she just do?” The dramatic effect was palpable. After having time to think though after subsequent viewings, I tried to put myself in that position. Certainly when you are in that position, when you have experienced a loss and are grieving, you say things you don’t mean to and you have no recollection of ever saying those things, let alone who showed up to the funeral. Was that really Ben Stark’s mother, or did Agent Durham put those things in motion to help push her over the edge to close his case? I want to believe this is a nice man, but there are no simple characters in writer Ronald Moore’s universe.

Would I go up there and admit to everyone that my daughter was one of the terrorists? I would not. Most people would not. When they are confronted with that sort of news, we tend to bunker down because of thClick to visit Sky Onee repercussions that will ultimately ensue.

    Caprica: Introducing Zoe Graystone

Welcome all Battlestar and Caprica fans!Alessandra Torresani - Click to visit her official web site!

In the third-part of our Caprica character analysis series, we are going to focus on the veClick to visit Caprica on SyFyry lovely Ms. Alessandra Torresani. Alessandra plays the teenage genius, Zoe Graystone, on Syfy’s new series, Caprica, airing Friday night, January 22 (check local listings for times)!

For her fans, Alessandra has graced us with her presence on Twitter as @BambolaBambina. Alessandra  even has her own website. Click the image to the right to visit the very lovely Ms. Torresani at her official site!

Alessandra and Magda Apanowicz recently made an appearance at the PaleyFest (Paley Center for Media) with executive producers David Eick, Jane Espenson and Ronald D. Moore discussed Caprica as a stand-alone show that has only subtle connections to “Battlestar Galactica”. The ladies talked about how they earned their roles on Caprica and a little about their characters.

When Caprica opens on the unedited pilot DVD, Zoe is in the V-Club at a balcony looking down on a Alessandra Toressani - Click to visit Caprica on SyFyyoung woman about to watch the virtual sacrifice of a virgin. We discover that this person looks exactly like Zoe. The V-Zoe cannot handle what she is seeing and she disappears. Zoe tells her boyfriend, Ben, and other friend, Lacy, that she is probably reverting back to her last copy because she was upset. Ben, her boyfriend, tells her that V-Zoe is going to be perfect because Zoe is perfect. Ah, heavy sigh! True love.

This genius young woman has created a virtual copy of herself and is trying to make her not only the sum total of information that exists in the real world of Alessandra Toressani Virtual Copy - Click to visit Caprica on SyFythe real Zoe, but she is also trying to teach her about humans and about feelings and to give her experiences. At first these experiences are at the V-Club, but just before the real Zoe dies, she is working on a biofeedback loop with her V-Zoe counterpart so that V-Zoe can experience what she is feeling on the outside world.

Ben, Lacy and Zoe have a plan to move to Gemenon. Later we find out that Ben introduced Zoe to The One True God (i.e., Soldiers of the One), and subsequently convinced Lacy to join them in their new religious path.

Zoe gets caught with a holoband at the Athenian Academy and her parents are called, Daniel and Amanda Graystone.

Amanda immediately grounds her; Daniel is softer on her. Zoe makes snide comments about her father’s dirty science. Zoe and Amanda spar some more where Amanda reminds Zoe that she should be grateful for what she has been given; Zoe reminds Amanda that she married into “money” (which I take to mean Amanda came from a poor family and married into the wealthy Graystone family). Amanda slaps her. Zoe says to her, “You will regret that for the rest of your life”, and storms off.

This scene could be replayed in millions of homes around the world. I recall saying much worse things to my mother growing up (and her to me).

Zoe goes to her room, where despite being told she could not use her holoband, she does, and goes to have a talk with V-Zoe. V-Zoe asks if people are really like that. Zoe responds that some people are, but that is going to change and V-Zoe is going to be a part of that.

It sounds like Zoe might have been putting V-Zoe into the position of becoming a voice to recruit other teens and anyone else who will listen about the One True God. But I’m sure the plan of the Soldiers of the One with regards to the virtual Zoe will be developed as the season develops.

Once at school, Zoe, Ben and Lacy split and head to the “Lev”, which is the Skytrain in Vancouver. I will not spoil what happens next for those who haven’t seen it. The train, however, blows up, claiming the lives of Zoe Graystone, her boyfriend, Ben, and Shannon and Tamara Adams (Adama). Scared, Lacy bailed out at the last minute which ultimately saved her life.

With the suggestion of an adult in the picture (no spoilers), Lacy tries to get access to Zoe’s holoband so Lacy Rand Holoband - Click to visit Caprica on SyFyshe can go visit V-Zoe to let her know Zoe died. But V-Zoe knows already Zoe is dead. We see a bloody V-Zoe and Lacy questions why this has happened. V-Zoe thinks that it happened because of a biofeedback loop that was ongoing at the time Zoe died. V-Zoe is scared, not knowing what is now going to happen to her program. Lacy grabs her and hugs her. When she pulls back, V-Zoe’s wounds are healed.

That is a powerful statement. The intense love of a friend was able to heal a virtual character on her way to becoming real, a digital-age Pinocchio. The real-life power of a hug is undisputed. A well-placed hug can defuse strong emotions, bridge differences, and remind us that we are alive and valuable. Hugs offered to people in crisis gives them something to hold on to during a moment of extreme instability. Hugs can also alleviate personal pain and isolation in non-crisis circumstances. They serve as a symbol of validation and acceptance.

Daniel comes home to find Lacy in Zoe’s room. Curious as to why, he goes in there after she departs to find a holoband and the pad that has the symbols to get in there. He just cannot crack the code…yet.

Time passes and Daniel does crack the code. He spots V-Zoe and follows her, but is electric shocked when he tries to open the door with the infinity symbol on it.

Amanda is paid a visit by an investigator. He shows her a message Zoe tried to send to her right before the train blew up. Amanda is shaken to hear about this, knowing Zoe was doing things that neither she nor Daniel was aware.

Lacy comes back over, but Daniel is waiting for her. He demands to know what is going on. Lacy takes him into the V-Club and finally to V-Zoe. At first Daniel dismisses her as a non-entity, talking to Lacy about V-Zoe as if she weren’t even there. After spending some time in there, he discovers that she was more than just a copy of her.

Possibly because he was feeling guilty for not being the best father she could have had, and wanting a second chance to do things right, and just for the simple acts of being able to touch and hold her again, he decides he has to find a way to bring V-Zoe from that world into the real world. He asks V-Zoe if he can hug her. She consents and they hug, but Daniel pulls out a flash drive to upload V-Zoe’s code. Lacy is denied access to his house at that point, telling Serge, his guard robot, to revoke her clearance.

Part of me, however, thinks Daniel is also thinking about his business and needs this to work to get that military contract. Either way, both acts are that of a selfish man.

Daniel eventually meets up with Joseph Adams (Adama). They go back to Daniel’s place and Serge takes William, Joseph’s son, off to the game room. He brings Joseph into the virtual world, apparently his first trip ever, to meet his virtual daughter. The two have a discussion about what a soul is. Daniel requires Joseph’s help in obtaining the technology to do this and promises he will create Joseph’s daughter, Tamara, for him. Daniel is quite persuasive and he agrees.

Lacy has a discussion with an adult she discovers also believes in the One Truth God. She tells Lacy how important this V-Zoe is to them.

Daniel visits V-Zoe and V-Zoe is nervous about the download that is about to happen. She isn’t sure she wants to be on Caprica. She tells Daniel some things that are difficult for him to hear. She shares that she hasn’t felt like Caprica City has been her home for a long time. V-Zoe says Zoe was on the train headed to Gemenon because she had found God. Daniel tries to stifle the conversation for now, and that they would talk about it later. V-Zoe says that he never wanted to listen and that Daniel and Amanda’s arrogance was killing Zoe, that THAT was how they lost her, not because of her death.

Because of Joseph’s help, he now has the meta-processing chip from the rival company (see previous character introductions).

The body into which V-Zoe is downloaded appears as if it is going to work, but then it collapses. He hears, “System Error. Data Loss. Irrecoverable Error.” He tries to go back to the virtual chamber, but V-Zoe is not there. Once again, he has to feel that horrible feeling that his daughter truly is dead, but this time for real (or so he thinks). He has not lost entirely. At least his company has now won. The chip he stole along with Zoe’s programming code allows him to create the effective killing machine that not only seals the deal on the government contract but seals the deal on the future of their society.
