    Hello fellow Comic-Con fans.

I know it has been over two months since it ended, but we still feel the fantastic excitement from our favorite convention. I am reflecting on the amazing panels I attended and some of the great interviews I had the opportunity to conduct. This year, I am happy that Comic Con is back in full swing. Despite the two strikes in 2024 that severely impacted the event, it did not seem to have any lingering effects. It looked improved than ever. Every year, Comic-Con continues to grow, with more panels, more independent artists, and an even greater selection of amazing things to buy. And every year, I find myself loving it more. I have been attending since 2012, and each year feels like my favorite. It is always a pleasure and something I eagerly look forward to whenever Comic Con arrives. The fun and informative panels, along with the intriguing and surprising interviews I get to conduct as a member of the press, make it even more exciting. I always look forward to discovering new and exciting information about current projects that specific stars are working on.

    The Toxic Avenger:

One panel I really enjoyed this year was The Toxic Avenger panel featuring Director Macon Blair, Peter Dinklage, Elijah Wood, and Taylour Paige. The panel was held in the famous Megalithic Hall H on July 24, 2025 to a rave fan reception. There were lots of laughs, and a trailer for the film, a remake of the original The Toxic Avenger from 1984, was also shown.

I was never familiar with that comic or movie before, but this version looks incredibly fun and funny. I am glad to see that. Hopefully, this Toxic Avenger will attract a whole new audience to both the film and the older versions. Elijah Wood mentioned that he was thrilled when he saw the conceptual drawing of what his character, Fritz, would look like.

It was nothing like Elijah had ever played before, and he stated that the chance to transform into that character was fun. Peter Dinklage mentioned a point about how, with The Toxic Avenger, the message of environmental concerns and climate change can be discussed using satire or humor to bring those issues to the forefront. Peter feels that The Toxic Avenger is necessary and needed, especially now that the environment is under a deeper threat than ever before. We include the full panel below courtesy Troma Entertainment.

    Legion M:

I also had the immense pleasure of interviewing the production team behind Legion M, which is producing a graphic novel and hopefully a movie called ‘Defiant’ about Robert Smalls that I recently reported on. If you do not know who Robert Small is, look him up by clicking the links included above. Smalls was an incredible individual who lived during the United States Civil War era.

Legion M is such a fantastic company when it comes to independent films and filmmakers. I had the pleasure of speaking with them, and they provided me with some insight into what it takes to get a movie produced and off the ground.

    Stern Pinball:

Image by Lori Glumac of #TeamWHR

One of my favorite parts of attending Comic Con is connecting with companies I genuinely admire and respect. One of those companies is Stern Pinball, a renowned manufacturer of gaming machines that specializes in creating highly unique pinball machines.

I have been covering their remarkable machines since 2022, when I had my first interview with them. I have been a fan ever since, and this year I had the opportunity to conduct another interview with Matthew Geyer, the VP of marketing for Stern. Matthew discussed their newest pinball machines, namely Dungeons and Dragons and King Kong.

But the highlight is their latest launch, the Jaws 50th Anniversary Premium Edition, which they are incredibly excited about featuring many innovations and awesome artwork. I also had the pleasure of playing not just with the new JAWS machine but a full range of their different machines, which include games of every type and everything! It was also a lot of fun to see a life-size statue of the Quint character right next to the Jaws pinball machine! He kept a close eye on it, ensuring that everything was going smoothly. Matthew told me that they usually launch about three to five games a year, with three major releases. These are always tied to pop culture, like rock ‘n’ roll or comic books. It is always fun to watch YouTube videos of these incredible machines being built and played, and to see the cool features Stern includes in them.

    OverPower:

The appeal of Comic Con also introduces attendees to a variety of genres. On July 26, 2025 I learned more about comic books and card games to fantasy novels when I attended the **OverPower** Press Room courtesy of the SuperPR Guy Gary Miereanu. OverPower is a game where two players battle with teams of four heroes and villains. “Unlike most other collectible card games, OverPower is not a resource management game, which makes its gameplay unique and both strategically and structurally different from Magic: The Gathering“. I must admit that I am unfamiliar with this type of card game. I did not participate in any of it, so it was a little daunting for me to take this interview when I knew nothing about the product. However, upon learning about OverPower and sitting down with the creative team, I gained a whole new perspective and respect for what these gentlemen do. The artwork is incredible, and it is an immensely popular card game, similar to Magic: The Gathering. However, it features darker characters and richer artwork.

2027-07-26 Casey Parsons in SDCC 2025 OverPower Press Room
Image by Lori Glumac of #TeamWHR

I sat down with Casey Parsons, the ongoing staff artist for OverPower, who says he is creating “3 cards a week on average.” He is working on Flaxons and Alien Invaders. He is given a specific block of time to complete the project and deliver what the company requires. A highlight for him was receiving the call to draw Cthulhu; he loves drawing monsters the most. Having his Cthulhu published was a childhood dream come true. Some of Casey’s artistic influences are George Pratt and Bill Sienkiewicz; he loves the old-school artists. He mentioned how he loves art history, and one of his major influences is Rembrandt; he loves to “create through that filter.” Casey said he is not a very technical artist, which makes drawing machines more challenging for him. “I enjoy drawing monsters and organic elements. However, I prefer not to use rulers. I like to draw all my lines freehand. So, all the buildings are done freehand, and I work traditionally.”

2027-07-26 Ito SDCC 2025 OverPower Press Room
Image by Lori Glumac of #TeamWHR

Next, I spoke with an artist known as Ito. We discussed how AI might influence the design of characters in this type of game. He was not concerned about that because he knew fans could tell the difference and prefer their art to be hand-drawn with oils and watercolors. “The number of gigabytes you cannot replicate. I hand-draw without using a lot of gigabytes, and AI is not there yet.” One of Ito’s influences outside of comic-book artists is John Singer Sargent, known for his portraiture and free, carefree brushstrokes. Lawrence Alma-Tadema and, of course, Michelangelo. He was wearing a Bob Ross T-shirt, and I mentioned Bob as well, and he noted Ross’s carefree style.

2025-07-26 OverPower team at SDCC 2025 Press Room
Image by Lori Glumac of #TeamWHR

It was wonderful for me to sit down and talk with these gentlemen about their art and their passion for it. They still had enthusiasm and passion for drawing and painting, preferring to use real watercolors or oils instead of digital methods. There is nothing like pencil to paper. Sorry. And it really is effective, especially as someone who tries to oppose AI as much as possible; having the actual touch of an artist makes an enormous difference.

As a result of interviewing with the gentleman from Overpower, I have a new respect for that genre and those types of card games. I wish them the best of luck with their current iteration and hope it performs exceptionally well. Unfortunately we could not interview the entire creative team in the SDCC Press Room. Instead we include interviews with OverPower courtesy of our friends at ThatsMyETV.

Overall, it was a successful Comic Con, 2025. A few bumps and glitches here and there, as has been the case since I started all these years ago. But you go with the flow, enjoy yourself, and have a grand old time. I do not think I will ever grow tired of attending Comic Con, as it is a celebration of art, artists, comic books, pop culture, and things that bring people joy, and we need that now more than ever.

    Hello, fellow Comic-Con attendees!

We are just days away from San Diego Comic-Con 2025! This year is a bit less chaotic than last year’s event, with no major Marvel movie screening like the one the previous year featuring Deadpool & Wolverine. Still, there are always fun things to see and do during the con, both inside and outside the convention center. This year seems to have more anime and games featured. We have not seen that since the writers and actors’ strike in 2023. Some major studios might not have panels this year, but that doesn’t mean their presence will be absent at the Con. Luckily, Hall H will host some great panels on Friday, although there will be very few on Saturday, which is unusual since both days tend to be the busiest.

    2025-07-12 Comic-Con Museum

The Comic-Con Museum also features historic Star Wars movie items from Star Wars: Echoes from the Galaxy. All of the fabulous items up for sale are being done by the legendary Julien’s Auction House.

Visitors can tour the museum located in nearby historic Balboa Park, only a short distance from the convention center to see some of the historic items up for sale before the auction that will be conducted on Sunday July 27, 2025.

Lucas Museum of Narrative Art banner

This year is historic, as the legendary George Lucas will make his Comic-Con debut with a panel discussing his new Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. The panel will be moderated by Queen Latifah a legend in her own right. I do not doubt that with George Lucas present, Hall H will be even more crowded. The auction will be held at the museum on the last day of the con, Sunday, July 27th, at 10:00 am. Happy bidding!

    The Toxic Avenger banner

Thursday, Day One of the convention, kicks off with ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ opening the Hall H panel in style, followed by a panel featuring two major comedians, Gabriel Iglesias and Jo Koy. This might be the first time comedians host their own panel at Comic-Con.

One panel I am especially excited about is ‘The Toxic Avenger’ with Peter Dinklage. It will be great to see Dinklage back in Hall H, especially since he usually appeared there for the Game of Thrones panels in earlier years.

Another exciting event at the convention is that Stern Pinball is bringing its new machine to the convention. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the iconic shark movie that started it all… JAWS. Stern Pinball is riding that wave and unveiling its JAWS-inspired machine.

Their Stern pinball machines are fantastic and feature some legendary franchises, such as John Wick, James Bond, and The Mandalorian as well as rock and roll icons like Rush and Metallica. They also have their convention room at the Marriott Marquis, where you can try out some of their featured games. I plan to try my luck with the new JAWS machine and will give a report.

I and everyone I know was eagerly hoping for a ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps‘ panel in Hall H since the movie opens on July 25th, but unfortunately, there will be no Marvel panels this year.

I think the chaos that resulted from the ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ surprise panel premiere last year at led Comic-Con International and Marvel Studios to decide against a special screening of Fantastic Four: First Steps at this years legendary pop culture convention.

Friday at San Diego Comic-Con in Hall H starts with ‘Outlander‘ and its spinoff ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood,’ followed by ‘Alien: Earth,’ the Stephen King movie ‘The Long Walk,’ ‘Predator: Badlands‘ which has been moved up a month to November 7, 2025 from it’s original December release.

Friday in Hall H concludes with the exciting  long anticipated return of Disney Studios Tron franchise starring Jeff Bridges as the fabled Kevin Flynn. I for one am looking forward to the ‘Tron: Ares‘ panel!

    Primitive War poster

If Hall H is not an option for you this year, there are still plenty of other fun panels to check out.

Some highlights include the exciting ‘Primitive War‘ set in Vietnam 1968 where a United States recon unit known as Vulture Squad is sent to an isolated jungle valley to uncover the fate of a missing Green Beret platoon. The group soon discover they are not alone.

The Primitive War panel is being presented in second largest venue, Ballroom 20. Featured stars include Ryan Kwanten, Tricia Helfer, and Jeremy Piven.

Also returning to the con is ‘Dexter: Resurrection‘ with Michael C. Hall and the cast, moderated by Jamie Chung.

Friday is always busy, with most panels taking place in the three main spots: Hall H, Ballroom 20, or the Indigo Ballroom at the Hilton Bayfront. Whatever you choose to do during the convention, plan accordingly, as most panels overlap and it can be challenging to see everything you want.

If you don’t have a badge for Comic-Con, don’t worry – you can still enjoy plenty of activities. Every year, Petco Park hosts a variety of exciting attractions. This year’s setup at Petco Park features a gritty underground Gotham City. Adult Swim, Abbott Elementary, will each have installations outside the convention. Most exiting is he soon to be released Alien Earth that will feature an immersive experience known as “The Wreckage” outside the Hilton Bay Front Hotel Thursday through Sunday

    Malibu Barbie Cafe San Diego

The Gaslamp restaurants will also showcase installations and offer fun food options and swag for fans. Paramount is bringing back “The Lodge”. Fans of Barbie can wear roller skates and roll around the Malibu Barbie Café. Peacock’s Twisted Metal is offering a “Bumper Battle” experience at San Diego Comic-Con. This interactive event allows fans to step into a post-apocalyptic world and participate in a bumper car tournament inspired by the show. Please note that since these activation’s don’t require a badge, lines may be long. It’s a good idea to check wait times on social media.

    Stranger Things S5 poster

With Warner Bros., Fox Studios, Disney, and Netflix not having panels this year, the panel rooms might be quieter, but that could mean more time for everyone on the convention floor. I am surprised that Stranger Things doesn’t have a panel this year, given that it is their final year, and it has always been a convention favorite. It’s always interesting to see which major series will and won’t be featured at Comic-Con when the schedule is released. I know everyone has their favorites, and it can be challenging, but it’s always fun regardless of the choices.

One thing that will always remain a staple at Comic-Con is the comics and the artists. No matter where you turn on the convention center floor, you will always see lots of vendors selling comic books or their original art. Take a stroll through Artists’ Alley and discover the amazing art showcased every day. Support these incredible independent artists, whether it’s by buying a sticker or original artwork. Another great way to support these artists is by sharing their content on all your social media platforms. After all, comic books were the original reason why Comic-Con started over 50 years ago.

As I finish this post and get ready for an exciting adventure, I want to remind all fans to support local comic book shops, local artists to keep pop culture, movies, and TV series alive! Importantly, stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, comfortable shoes, pack snacks, and grab as much swag as you can. Bring your enthusiasm! See you soon in San Diego!

I want to share my experience at the TCM Film Festival in Los Angeles, which took place from April 24 to April 28. This year marked my second unforgettable experience at the event, enhanced by an upgraded pass that made it even more thrilling. I was fortunate enough to book a room at the iconic Hollywood Roosevelt, a historic hotel steeped in celebrity lore, nestled right on the bustling Hollywood Boulevard. The excitement of being surrounded by the vibrant energy of the area and the allure of the hotel’s storied past made my stay truly remarkable.

This year’s festival was a remarkable celebration, marking its 16th anniversary and drawing movie enthusiasts from every corner of the globe. The enchanting theme, “Grand Illusions: Fantastic Worlds on Film,” set the stage for an immersive cinematic experience. Attendees could choose from four tiers of passes: Spotlight, Essential, Classic, and Palace, each offering access to a treasure trove of captivating films. I was thrilled to secure an Essential pass, which provided me with the exciting opportunity to attend the glamorous opening-night red-carpet screening of “The Empire Strikes Back.” This unforgettable evening was graced by a pre-movie interview featuring the legendary George Lucas, conducted by the insightful Ben Mankiewicz, making it a truly memorable night for all.

The lineup of films for this year’s event was wonderfully diverse, highlighting a vibrant array of genres that catered to every cinematic taste. I found myself grappling with the difficult task of selecting which movies to screen, as many of them overlapped in timing, with only a tight fifteen-minute window—or even less—to hustle over to the theater, check in, and join the throng of eager moviegoers lined up outside. Some films garnered a much larger following, creating a palpable buzz that pulsed through the crowd. This meant that I often had to make tough decisions to leave the captivating current screening, urged along with collective excitement, to queue up for the next blockbuster alongside a sea of enthusiastic film lovers. The charm of these festivals lies in the freedom to select films I had already experienced, allowing me to leave the theater without a pang of regret. Knowing the plot’s resolution ahead of time meant that stepping out before the credits rolled was not a loss; instead, it felt like a gentle embrace of nostalgia. I could savor the familiar emotions and vivid recollections evoked by the cinematic journey, confident that I had not missed anything significant.

During the exhilarating four-day event, I immersed myself in a total of nine films, a feat that proved to be quite a challenge this year. The lineup was a nostalgic dream, featuring many of my all-time favorite movies. The opening night was particularly fraught with tough decisions, as the majestic Grauman’s Chinese Theater buzzed with excitement for “Empire Strikes Back.” Yet, just a few blocks away, the historic Egyptian Theater was highlighting another gem—Paul Newman’s brilliant performance in “Hud,” a film that has captured my heart over the years. Driven by a fierce determination not to miss the opportunity, I reluctantly left early from the thrilling space battles of the Empire. I briskly made my way to the Egyptian, eager to experience the unforgettable storytelling of “Hud” on the big screen. Before the screening of “Hud,” the esteemed actor Keith Carradine graced the stage, sharing his profound admiration for the film. He spoke passionately about the remarkable performances delivered by Patricia Neal and Melvyn Douglas, both of whom were honored with Academy Awards for their roles. Keith also paid tribute to the legendary Paul Newman, whose charismatic presence brought unique energy to the production. He highlighted one of my favorite cinematographers, the brilliant James Wong Howe, emphasizing how his masterful black-and-white imagery infused the movie with remarkable depth and nuance, creating a visual tapestry that perfectly complemented the storytelling.

On Day 2 of the festival, I was fortunate enough to attend the Hand and Foot Ceremony for Michelle Pfeiffer. As Michelle made her entrance, accompanied by her renowned husband, David E. Kelley, the crowd buzzed with anticipation, thrilled to witness her moment of recognition immortalized in cement. Dakota Fanning and Elle Fanning, both radiant and enthusiastic, took to the stage to introduce Michelle.

They spoke with heartfelt admiration, reflecting on the memorable experiences they shared while collaborating with her, highlighting not just her talent but also her warmth and generosity. The atmosphere was filled with joy and appreciation, making the event truly special for everyone involved.

After the enchanting ceremony honoring Michelle Pfeiffer, I found myself with about an hour to indulge in some food before queuing up to see the original 1978 film “Superman,” a film starring the late, great Christopher Reeve, alongside the iconic Margot Kidder and the legendary Gene Hackman. The atmosphere in the line was electric, filled with fellow movie enthusiasts radiating excitement. There is something uniquely exhilarating about standing shoulder to shoulder with like-minded fans; the air buzzes with conversations that weave in and out like a vibrant tapestry of shared experiences and enthusiastic opinions. These exchanges not only help pass the time but also deepen the sense of anticipation as we collectively look forward to witnessing the magic of cinema unfold on the big screen.

After Superman wrapped up his exhilarating escapades, I made my way back to the cozy confines of my hotel room, eager for some much-needed nourishment and a few precious moments of respite.

The anticipation of the evening grew as I prepared to head to the vibrant pool area, where a screening of the beloved classic movie “Clueless” awaited. This is one of the many joys of attending the TCM festival.

Their superb schedule features the delightful array of the movie events it hosts, such as charming poolside movies and engaging movie panels that bring film enthusiasts together to enjoy the movies they love.

Last year, the sun-kissed surface of the pool glimmered beneath the stars during the screening of “Footloose,” and this time, with “Clueless,” I was greeted by a kaleidoscope of patrons donning costumes that brought the film’s iconic characters to life.

The atmosphere buzzed with excitement, promising an unforgettable evening under the twinkling night sky. The fantastic Elisa Donovan, who played Amber, was there to discuss making the iconic film and how, even thirty years later, the cast remains friends to this day. Elisa Donovan was openly delighted in seeing fans in costume and praised them for their attention to detail in creating their cosplay creations.

Day 3 provided me with a leisurely period, as the first film on my itinerary was not scheduled to begin until 2:45 p.m. I meandered along Hollywood Boulevard, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere and the iconic sights surrounding me. I strolled down those famous sidewalks, where countless names of legendary stars were etched into the concrete with elegance. Each step brought me closer to the rich tapestry of history, as I admired the intricate designs and the stories behind the illustrious figures immortalized beneath my feet. My first movie of the day was “Back to the Future,” which brought me back to my youth and the enthusiasm I remember from when I first saw that film on a big screen. Bob Gale, Charlie Croughwell, and Dean Cundey were the special guests who regaled us with tales of making that legendary film.

Next on my film agenda was the legendary Steven Spielberg classic “Jaws,” playing at the historic Egyptian Theater. Eagerly departing from “the future,” I rushed to join the lengthy line of fellow movie enthusiasts, my heart racing with anticipation for the thrilling experience that awaited me.

I was lucky enough to grab an aisle seat and settle in with my popcorn and drink in hand. The lovely Lorraine Gary, who portrayed Ellen Brody, was present to discuss making the film and her fondness for Robert Shaw. Her wit made the experience better as she discussed how movie making was mostly foreign to her, being a trained theater actor.

The last movie I watched that night was the legendary science fiction masterpiece “Blade Runner.” a favorite of mine and WormholeRiders News Agency. Fortunately, Blade Runner was showing at the same theater as “Jaws”, so it was going to be relatively easy to shift venues.

As a result I decided to leave early to join the extensive line of fans already queuing up. The version we were queuing up to see was the digitally remastered 2007 version of the film which was excellent.

Sean Young, who portrayed Rachel, was present to discuss the film and share her experience as a 19-year-old actress working with some of the industry’s heavy hitters. The 2007 version was nothing short of spectacular, with its vibrant colors that danced across the screen, breathtaking cinematography by Jordan Cronenweth that captured every intricate detail, and the evocative score by Vangelis that infused each scene with emotional depth. I made it a point to experience this extraordinary film in a theater, relishing the way it was meant to be enjoyed—larger than life, enveloping me in its visual and auditory splendor. With “Blade Runner” ending at midnight, I was tempted to make my way to the Chinese Multiplex to see “Wild at Heart,” but I could not make it. I spoke to some fellow movie fans who attended the screening, and they told me it started an hour late. They did not return to their hotel until well after 3 the next morning!

On the final day of the festival, I had three films I was eager to see. However, two of them unfortunately overlapped in schedule so I made a decision on which of the excellent movies to see.

After much deliberation, I decided to watch “Apocalypse Now” on the massive screen instead of “Sunset Boulevard.” I have attended many screenings of “Sunset Boulevard” on the big screen before making the choice a bit easier.

Since I had never seen “Apocalypse Now” in a theater setting, the closest I had gotten was watching it on my own 4K 65-inch screen at home. Watchinmg the big screen version a real treat!

Director Antoine Fuqua and film noir expert historian Eddie Muller were there to chat about how impactful and utterly life-changing “Apocalypse Now” was to both. For me, the 70mm print of the original theatrical release version, courtesy of the George Eastman Museum from Martin Scorsese‘s collection, made the experience even more incredible, given Scorsese’s reputation as a champion for restoring and archiving the history of film.

The final film of the festival for me was the iconic masterpiece directed by Michael Mann, “Heat.” The atmosphere in the room was electric as both Mann and the legendary Al Pacino took the stage. Ben Mankiewicz, with his engaging charm, posed a fascinating question: how had two of the most celebrated actors of their generation, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, finally come together for a film? Listening to their insights was a profound experience, as they reminisced about the painstaking craft of filmmaking and the unforgettable shoot-out scene that erupted amidst the bustling streets of Los Angeles—a moment etched in cinematic history.

The film boasted a star-studded cast that left my mind racing with excitement, especially when I thought of the talented character actors who brought depth to the story. I could not help but reflect on the extraordinary Val Kilmer, whose powerful presence on screen had captivated audiences before his heartbreaking passing on April 1st. It was a poignant moment, filled with nostalgia for his talents, as I absorbed the richness of this cinematic event.

As I reflect on the TCM Film Festival 2025, I am filled with excitement and nostalgia. For anyone who cherishes the art of cinema and revels in the communal experience of watching films with fellow enthusiasts, I wholeheartedly encourage you to secure a pass for next year’s event. Over the past two years, attending this extraordinary festival has become a highlight of my year, weaving a tapestry of unforgettable moments. There is something indescribably joyous about being surrounded by kindred spirits—fellow cinephiles who share the same passion for storytelling on the big screen, all of us united in our love for film.

To encapsulate the essence of this experience, I am reminded of Gloria Swanson’s portrayal of Norma Desmond’s who’s poignant words from the climactic final scene of “Sunset Boulevard.” “You see, this is my life, it always will be. There is nothing else, just us and the cameras, and those wonderful people out there in the dark.” These words resonate deeply as I immerse myself in the magic of the festival, where each screening draws us closer together in a shared adventure through the lens of cinema!

Godzilla Minus One – Analysis and Interviews From One Fan to Another!

Hello, my fellow Godzilla Minus One fans.

For the past 60-plus years, there have been many Godzilla movies. Depending on who you ask, some are good and bad.

There are thirty-eight Godzilla films, thirty-three of which were produced and distributed by the legendary Japanese film company Toho. The latest is the current masterpiece Godzilla Minus One.

I have been a massive fan of Godzilla movies since I was a teenager, and my love has only grown as I have gotten older. Godzilla is seen as what he is…pure monster with this latest incarnation. Godzilla films have always had an undertone of consequences.

What happens when humans detonate a nuclear bomb? What happens to the earth, humanity, and the known world around us? With Godzilla Minus One, that message is explored more personally with the human story portrayed in this movie. We include Toho Studios interviews below for your enjoyment. It is suggested to view full screen to read the English captions on mobile devices.

Godzilla Minus One Director Takashi YamazakiOne of the many things I adore about this movie is that it is entirely in Japanese, so be prepared.

There is almost zero English spoken except one scene of a telecaster reporting “live” from Japan.

The entire cast is Japanese actors, and the Godzilla Minus One writer and director (Takashi Yamazaki) are all Japanese.

It was born there, and Japan knows Godzilla best. The human element has played a vital role in all Godzilla movies produced by Toho Studios.

The characters are flawed and fallible, especially the main character, Koichi (Ryunosuke Kamiki), a kamikaze who fails to fulfill his duty. The cast is exceptional, portrayed with heart, grit, compassion, and humanity that are missing in modern film today.

In this movie, one would expect to see Godzilla in every scene or at least half of the film, but that is not the case. You only get to see Godzilla maybe three times throughout the entire movie. However, what you see and feel is the anticipation, dread, panic, and sheer terror that the mere thought of Godzilla can evoke. It reminds me of Jaws, where you barely see the shark but still feel the terror, panic, and destruction that the shark has wrought.

I do not want to spoil the movie for you with this review. My intention is for you to watch it yourself. The special effects are extraordinary, and the CGI is so well done that it is hardly noticeable. Godzilla looks just as I remember it – gigantic, scary, and powerful. One particular aspect of the creature was added to make it more extraordinary when seeing it in action. I will not give it away, but I was utterly amazed. It added yet another incredible element to the story.

One aspect I appreciate about this movie is the prominence of Japanese culture. The code of honor and way of life are featured and challenged throughout the film. It is particularly impactful that Koichi survived and did not fulfill his duty as a kamikaze, which brings shame and disgrace to him and his family. He needs to redeem himself, but when he returns home, everyone he meets reminds him that he is a disgrace. The story is like a mix of Shakespeare and Greek tragedy. It shows that family is those who share your blood and those for whom you would shed your blood.

    Godzilla Minus One Shocking

The effects of war and its aftermath are vividly portrayed through the characters that Koichi meets. His neighbor, Sumiko, (Sakura Ando), ensures he understands the situation he is walking in. She was there for his parents when the bombs hit. She was left to deal with the death and destruction that followed. Sakura does an outstanding job of conveying the disgust mixed with pain and sorrow that Koichi encounters while also showing glimpses of compassion amidst the rubble.

The movie is remarkable because it metaphorically portrays the extent of man’s ego. It shows what it means to be a victim of war and survive while witnessing the destruction of everything you have ever known and loved. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the human stories unfold. Each character’s perspective was well portrayed, and it was easy to see how Koichi dealt with each encounter he faced.

My adrenaline spiked when Godzilla appeared in the film, anticipating that nothing short of astonishing destruction would ensue. The fact that Godzilla is indiscriminate about what it destroys and how powerful it is is one of the reasons I love this franchise. Godzilla is a pure monster, embodying raw power. Unlike previous Godzilla movies that made the beast sympathetic or helpful, the filmmakers kept it true to its original intention.

I heard that during some movie screenings, some viewers walked out because the film had subtitles. I enjoy watching foreign movies and would like to watch more of them. I believe some viewers left because most Godzilla movies are dubbed in English (poorly), giving them a certain charm and cheesiness that has made them cult classics.

The Japanese film industry has always been renowned for its brilliant cinematography and metaphors, which many Hollywood filmmakers try to emulate. This influence is evident in modern American cinema, as many of the greatest filmmakers are heavily influenced by Japanese masters. With the release of the latest Godzilla movie, I hope that more American filmmakers will strive to achieve the same level of mastery. However, I was a bit confused when I went to buy tickets for the movie. It was only available for a week and at certain theaters. I wonder if this had to do with the fact that it was technically considered a foreign film. Perhaps it may not be as appealing to audiences as a straight-up monster movie made by an American filmmaker.

    Godzilla Minus One Minami Hamabe

In the movie, Koichi and Noriko (Minami Hamabe) are haphazardly thrown together and form a makeshift family. Minami’s portrayal of Noriko is outstanding as she brings both a softness and an edge to the character. Her performance is enjoyable, and I look forward to seeing her in more films. Despite Koichi’s lack of intention, Noriko forces him into a family dynamic because of their circumstances. I was surprised to learn that Minami is a young actress with an impressive range.

    Godzilla Minus One Destruction

In the movie, Godzilla (the character) takes a backseat as you get engrossed in the lives of the war survivors. You learn about their humanity, lives before the war, and how it has changed.

The movie also sheds light on the naivete of some soldiers who have never seen war or battle and are eager to fight but are soon put in their place by the veterans who know what war does to people.

    Godzilla Minus One Wartorn Japan

In the film, there is a shift in the timeline that takes you several years into the future. Japan has almost fully recovered from the destruction brought by the war and Godzilla’s rampage.

It is comforting to see this glimpse of a better future, even if it’s only briefly before the chaos begins again.

During this period, everything changes for those involved. The dire situation becomes even more severe when Godzilla delivers the final blow determining Japan’s future. It is up to Koichi and his comrades, Seiji Akitsu (Kuranosuke Sasaki) and Kenji Noda (Hidetaka Yoshioka), to figure out how to stop Godzilla once and for all.

Godzilla Minus One AfterFor the remainder of the movie, I was utterly amazed, and I must admit, I even shed a few tears due to the events that transpired. The way the movie concluded suggests the possibility of a sequel (which I certainly hope for). Given its success at the box office and the rumored Oscar buzz, a sequel seems like a brilliant idea.

To summarize, I highly recommend watching this masterpiece if you are a Godzilla fan. It is worth the price of admission, and it will alter your perspective on Godzilla movies forever.

  • Creation’s 2010 Star Trek Convention San Francisco Day One Overview

Hey Star Trek Fans! Richard Keil - Click to visit Creation Entertainment

Creation-Star Trek -SF2010 - Click to visit Creantion EntertainmentIt has been long overdue for a Star Trek convention to be back in San Francisco. Creation Entertainment held the convention at the Westin St. Francis Hotel in Union Square. They had a decent size vendors’ room to roam around.

Creation Entertainment also had the chance to add two extra guests in the vendors’ room Richard Keil (best known as JAWS from The James Bond films) and William Wellman, Jr. (Bajoran Security Guard).

William Wellman - Click to visit Creation Entertainment

Also in the vendors’ room was Gary Lockwood (Lt. Cmdr. Gary Mitchell of The Original Series and 2001: A Space Odyssey). I had the pleasure of taking pictures of each. I did receive an autograph from Gary Lockwood for giving him my black permanent marker because he did not have another that would work. How cool is that? Gary autographing my photo of choice!

Onstage first was the Quark Family or Armin Shimmerman (Quark of Deep Space Nine) and Max ArminShimmerman & MaxGrodenchik - Click to visit Creation EntertainmentGrodenchik (Rom of Deep Space Nine). One of the most common questions they answered was how long did the make up take? Both agreed that it took anywhere from 2-3 hours depending on the make up artist. Each complimented each other on how well the other was doing since Deep Space Nine. You could tell the close bond between the two. It was fun to watch them play off each like brothers in real life. A couple of times Armin jumped down from the stage to speak directly to fans he could not hear questions from. One was from a little boy that wanted Armin to recite a few lines from an episode. Armin stood behind the boy as he let him recite it himself. It was very cute. Unfortunately, it was too dark for me to take a picture of that moment. Armin made a point to say that the writers produce the scripts, but it’s up to the actors to “bring to life” the written word of the screen writers. Both certainly did in DS9!

ArminShimmerma & MaxGrodenchik - Click to visit Creation Entertainment

Casey Biggs - Click to visit Creation EntertainmentRight after we had Casey Biggs (Damar of Deep Space Nine). Casey came out talking about his audition for Deep Space 9. His audition only consisted of five words. Julliard trained he did what he thought would work. He did not realize once he got the part of Damar that he would have to wear two pounds of rubber. He told us he did not know if he could act under all that rubber. Fortunately he got encouragement from the producers and did just fine.

Shortly after Casey brought on stage Vaughn Armstrong (Admiral Maxwell Forrest of Star Trek Enterprise, Alpha-Hirogen of Star Trek Voyager, and Seskal of Deep Space Nine) do sing a few songs. Casey Biggs & Vaugn Armstrong - Click to visit Creation EntertainmentCasey played the guitar while Vaughn played the ukulele. The first song was about Vaughn’s first Trek Cruise to Hawaii. The second was a funny song about Red Shirts on The Original Series and the last song was about the women of Star Trek. Each song received quite a few laughs from the fans. After the song Casey turned the stage over to Vaughn.

Vaughn talked about how he truly enjoyed sitting in the Star Trek Enteprise “Captain’s Chair” in the episodes “A Mirror Darklly” and kissing Hoshi for one of the episodes on Enterprise. It also happened to be his favorite episode. He was asked if he liked playing the good guy or bad guy better. He said that which ever would pay better, which got a lot of laughs. He said that he was just happy to be working doing what he loves. Our very own WR_Systems asked Vaughn a few questions about his Admiral Forrest character. Would Vaughn have loved to seen Admiral Forrest been part of a spin off series from Enterprise based on “A Mirror Darkly”. Vaughn responded with a, “HELL YES!” He also said that his character died to which WR_Systems responded with no one ever stays dead in Sci Fi, he was transported to “Empress Hoshi’s” Quarters on the Enterprise!

Vaughn Armstrong - Click to visit Creation Entertainment

A little later in the day we had the pleasure of having another duo onstage, JG Hertzler (Martok on Star Trek: The Next Generation) and Robert O’Reilly (Gowran of Star Trek: The Next Generation). I knew they would be on stage together, but I did not know they would be in full Klingon make up and costume. It was great! All the years I have been to conventions I do not recall any guest stars dressing up like these two did.

J.G. Hertzler & RobertOReilly - Click to visit Creation Entertainment

They would be in Klingon character for a moment and suddenly switch out to another or themselves. It was hilarious to watch them both. Robert or Martok was giving out some gumdrops to a few fans as well as flirting to those he could see. Another fun moment was when they had asked for all those who were dressed as Klingons to come up on stage to sing along with them a Klingon song.

Clingon's on Stage - Click to visit Creation Entertainment

My personal favorite part of their Q&A session was the Klingon rap song they did. They danced along with the song and posed here and there. Some of my photos got blurred because I was laughing during the performance and could not keep my camera still. Have to say their Q&A seemed like it flew by because of the antics that went on.

Chase Masterson - Click to visit Creation Entertainment

Last, but not least was Chase Masterson (Leeta of Deep Space Nine). She no longer has the short red hair as she did on the show. She now has lovely long blonde hair. When she first came in I remember doing a double take because I almost did not recognize her. WR_Systems will have a full report on Chase since I had to leave early to save our spot for our photo op with Chase right after her Q&A. I will add that I did convince WR_Systems to do the photo op, but really did I really have to twist his arm? LOL 😛

I ended my day with WR_Systems and I at Chase’s photo op. We were second in line. Have to say this was his first photo op and it was fun to see how nervous he was, it was cute. Chase was very kind and took a moment to speak with us both. I cannot wait to see how well our photo turned out. (WR_Systems’s here: Chase you and I will be posted with the report on “Leeta”- YAY!)

Tuesday I will continue reporting with the two most popular captains in Star Trek, William Shatner (Captain James T. Kirk) and Sir Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean Luc Picard)!Click to visit SciFiFanGirl616 on Twitter
