This evening something very special is about to happen on our television screens! From everyone’s friend, the great team at NBC Universal is bringing a fantastic supernatural science fiction flavored series called Saving Hope premiering at 9 PM E/P TONIGHT!

Saving Hope S1x01 - Erica Durance ad Dr Alex ReidLong awaited by their fans, NBC has selected starring roles for many favorite celebrities, including several of our own, starting with the gorgeous and talented Erica Durance of Smallvile .

Many will also remember Erica from the Stargate SG-1 episode “Affinity” when she portrayed a female friend of Teal’c known as Krista who suffered from domestic violence. Stargate SG-1 is where I first became enchanted with her acting, Ms. Durance is a perfect choice for the role of Dr. Alex Reid in the series. Saving Hope S1x01 - Michael Shaks as Dr Charlie Harris with Erica Durance

The leading male character in Saving Hope is the outstanding actor, handsome and enigmatic Michael Shanks whom all remember as the often ascended archeologist Dr. Daniel Jackson in MGM Studios hit Stargate SG-1.

Shanks is also known for many other roles on Syfy and as a guest star in another fan favorite series, Burn Notice. Shanks will portray a ghostly comatose Dr. Charlie Harris in Saving Hope. After suffering from a near fatal car accident which “attaches” his character to the “Hope Zion” hospital facility, the adventure is just beginning!

Michael Shanks is also wildly anticipated at this years Creation Entertainment Stargate Convention is Chicago! We have no doubt this “doctor” will be a most interesting character in the series that he will share about at the convention!

Saving Hope S1x01 - Daniel Gillies as Dr Joel GoranRounding out what appears to be the love triangle in the Saving Hope series is long time resident of Mystic Falls, Daniel Gillies from The Vampire Diaries portraying Dr. Joel Goran (a human being this time around) who has a long standing relationship with Durance as Dr. Reid. This ongoing crush will no doubt delightfully spice up the romance and good natured banter in Saving Hope.

Bringing drama fans an exciting summer series for us all to enjoy, NBC describes the new program as follows:

Saving Hope is a new, hour-long original drama series that stars Erica Durance (“Smallville”), Michael Shanks (“Stargate SG-1“), Daniel Gillies (“The Vampire Diaries”), Huse Madhavji (“Combat Hospital,” “Star!,” “Daily”), Julia Taylor Ross (“Rookie Blue”) and Kristopher Turner (“Rookie Blue,” “The Listener”).”Saving Hope S1x01 - Julia Taylor Ross as Dr Maggie Lin

“The series is from acclaimed Gemini Award-winning producers Ilana Frank and David Wellington (“The Eleventh Hour,” “Would Be Kings,” “Rookie Blue”).”

“In Saving Hope, when charismatic Chief of Surgery Charlie Harris (Shanks) at Hope-Zion Hospital ends up in a coma, he leaves the hospital in chaos – and his fiancee and fellow surgeon, Alex Reid (Durance), in a state of shock. Along with newly arrived star surgeon, Joel Goran (Gillies), Reid races to save Harris’ life. “

Saving Hope S1x01 - Kristopher Turner as Dr Gavin Murphy“As the action unfolds, the comatose Harris explores the hospital halls in “spirit” form, not sure if he’s a ghost or a figment of his own imagination. Reid, along with her fellow doctors, press on to save his life and those of their other patients as they deal with the complicated and courageous decisions that are made in their daily struggle to keep hope alive.

“Saving Hope is produced by Ilana C. Frank Films (ICFF) with Entertainment One (eOne), in association with CTV and NBC. The series is executive produced by Ilana Frank and David Wellington for ICFF, Noreen Halpern (“Hell on Wheels,” “Call Me Fitz”) and John Morayniss (“The Firm,” “Haven”) for Entertainment One and Lesley Harrison.”Saving Hope S1x01 - Huse Madhavji as neurosurgeon Shahir Hamza

Executive producers and showrunners are Morwyn Brebner (“Rookie Blue”) and Aaron Martin (“Being Erica”). The series was created by Malcolm MacRury (“Crash and Burn,” “Republic of Doyle”) and Morwyn Brebner. David Wellington directed the Saving Hope pilot.

This exciting new offering by NBC also features solid veteran actors Benjamin Ayres, Wendy Crewson, K.C. Collins, and Salvatore Antonio to name but a few. Having seen the extended promotional trailers many times, we are more than excited to provide them courtesy of the NBC Universal’s Saving Hope publicity unit. We include all of them here in one special 28 minute HD promotional entertainment news video for your enjoyment!

  • Falling Skies: An Interview with The Charming and Talented Mpho Koaho

Falling Skies: An Interview with The Charming and Talented Mpho Koaho

    Falling Skies on TNT

Mpho KoahoHey there, fans of Mpho Koaho!

On Friday, September 30th, Mpho was kind enough to sit down with the WormholeRiders News Agency for an exclusive Skype interview from his home in Vancouver, Canada.

Mpho Koaho has appeared in a number of television shows, such as animated series MetaJets, Combat Hospital, Rookie Blues, Flashpoint, and most recently TNT’s new sci-fi drama, Falling Skies. The show was a massive hit for the network and it is what we spent the majority of our conversation with Mpho discussing.

Falling Skies, which is produced by Steven Spielberg, told the story of the aftermath of a crippling alien invasion, that has wiped out nearly ninety percent of the Earth’s population. The monstrous race of beings that seemingly lead the invasion are fast, six-legged, and insect-like; which prompted people to call them “Skitters.”

The Skitters main weapon against humanity are towering robotic “Mech” soldiers that are made out of a near-indestructible metal. As if this would not make them a dangerous enough foe, the Skitters also capture and brainwash young earth children; by use of mechanical “harnesses” that attached to their spines. The aliens used them to do their bidding and as cannon fodder.

    video
    play-sharp-fill

It is eventually discovered that these harnesses do much more than just control the minds of the children they are attached to – they also mutated their bodies into monstrous creatures much like the Skitters.  As the show’s first season continued on, it was discovered that the Skitters were merely foot soldiers, themselves a “harnessed” and mutated race of conquered beings, that are doing the bidding of tall, thin grey-skinned aliens who rarely appear to the people of earth. The show focuses on a group of resistance fighters, called the “Second Massachusetts” (2ndMass).

On the show Falling Skies, Mpho Koaho plays Anthony; a former Boston police officer who has allied himself with the Second Massachusetts. Anthony became close with another resistance fighter named Dai (Peter Shinkoda), as well as the unit’s second in command, Tom Mason (Noah Wyle), a former college professor who joined the unit to better protect his three sons Hal (Drew Roy), Ben (Connor Jessup) and Matt (Maxim Knight).

Mpho Koaho as Anthony with Peter Shinkoda as Dai
During our exclusive interview, Mpho Koaho spoke about his time working on Falling Skies and past projects that he has done including being one of two finalists for a role in Stargate Universe with his friend Brian J. Smith (they both recently tweeted with other ).

Mpho’s character, Anthony, has become a fan favorite character on Falling Skies and is slated to appear in the show’s second season. Falling Skies will begin production in mid October in Vancouver, Canada. Be sure to follow Mpho Koaho’s fan page on Facebook by clicking here. Have fun and enjoy our audio interview with Mpho to find out interesting tidbits like who would be Mpho’s dream guest-star on Falling Skies, what kind of physical training he undergoes, and what his favorite moment is on the show.

You’re Next by Gregg Hurwitz: An Initimate Interview at Book Passage!

    header_grab 3

Hello once again Gregg Hurwitz fans! You're Next US cover

On July 23, 2011, Gregg continued his book tour after his visit to Comic-Con San Diego. Kenn and Gregg just missed each other during the convention melee.

I on the other hand was in Marin County California to interview famed author Gregg Hurwitz at Book Passage, where I was able to get a great photo of Gregg to share with you here at Book Passage, a popular independent bookstore that’s been around for many years.

On a side note, that morning was the morning I heard about Amy Winehouse’s death at age 27, tragic and such a waste. That weekend was also the annual conference for mystery writers and readers.

When I arrived at the bookstore, I immediately knew who Gregg was just on instinct, and of course from his pictures, and also because a Book Passage employee was discussing his schedule with him.

I introduced myself to the lady, who in turn introduced me to Gregg for the interview we include below for your enjoyment.

    video
    play-sharp-fill

A panel was about to start, one that included Gregg, and several other mystery authors. The moderator was Sheldon Siegel, an accomplished mystery writer as well as a lawyer in San Francisco. Sheldon happened to recognize me right away, and we had a mini-reunion before the panel began.

The first panel I sat in had authors Gregg Hurwitz, Robert Dugoni, D.P. Lyle, and George Fong, who is currently security for ESPN, as well as a former FBI agent. Together they discussed how one goes about researching for their mystery novel. You get as many contacts as you can, and maybe one of them can lead you to another expert on the subject you are researching, and so on, like a domino effect.

Later, during lunch break, I bought “You’re Next,” by Gregg Hurwitz, “Murder One,” by Robert Dugoni, and of course, Sheldon’s “Perfect Alibi,” the latest Mike Daley novel. I interviewed Gregg after lunch, in which he was very easy going, and just a nice guy in general. He also signed the book for me. Thank you Gregg!

After our interview, I sat down at the next panel, in which Gregg was going to read an excerpt from “You’re Next,” and Dugoni was going to discuss his new novel, as well. It was a very enjoyable panel, and very light hearted, and Sheldon was once again the moderator. All in all, a successful delightful day at Book Passage!

Alt Press Expo – Public Service Announcement: Help High Tech High Reduce School Drop Out Rates!

Hello alternative press and comic book fans,Click to visit the Alternative Press Exposition San Francisco

During my first day at the Alternative Press Exposition I explored the historic converted railway station now known as the Concourse Exhibition Center in San Francisco reveling in the fact that the APE convention had more than doubled in size over 2009! The convention is designed to spotlight the value of alternative press methodologies!

Click to visit the Concourse Exhibition Center!During my journey I was drawn to a specific booth in the afternoon that fascinated me. I observed a booth with the title “High Tech High“. I headed over to see if I could find out what High Tech High was doing at the Alt Press Expo?

The nice people running the booth were from Chula Vista California, home of High Tech High in their area. I then recalled Click to learn more about High Tech High Chula Vista!from memory my own years in high school when small class sizes were the norm and how fortunate I was in the 1960’s and 1970’s to receive a quality education before the economic realities of the twenty-first century have made such more difficult.

I immediately stopped my tour of the huge Concourse Exhibition Center facility to chat with this group. I discovered that High Tech High Chula Vista was leveraging comic books as alternative press methodology to highlight a problem in many societies including the United States in general and many communities in California in specific. What problem? High School drop out rates! Why was I interested?

The reason is simple. In my own family I have a nephew who is about to enter High School but may not since he may fail middle school! The problem of educational drop out rates and failing students is a plague on our society which will haunt the failing students and their families in their lives for years, even decades to come! Worse, the cascading negative effects on our society are among the most devastating often leading to drug abuse and criminal youth activities!

There are many reasons for the high school drop out failure rates, far too many to discuss here, but this subject, as mentioned, had special interest to me. I selected this editorial topic because I believe the general public has great interest in this subject as well and ask for your support.

Click to learn more about High Tech High Chula Vista!
To that point, I had the privilege to discuss the matter with the High Tech High Chula Vista Team Leader Patrick Yurick from Chula Vista California. High Tech High of Chula Vista has created a special comic book “Nice Meeting You, Goodbye” to raise awareness about this disturbing problem.

While we all know that a college or university education may not be for everyone, a solid foundation in the basics, in being articulate, being well read, and being able to understand mathematics to help young people be prepared in the real world is a must. We include an interview (below) by the High Tech High Chula Vista Team for your edification and enjoyment.

NOTE: The date quoted in the interview for So-Cal Comic-Con is incorrect. So-Cal Comic-Con is on Saturday November 06, 2010, not November 09, 2010!

    PRESS RELEASE:

The Graphic Novel Project’s second major issue, Nice Meeting You, Goodbye, is finally here in full color with rich dialogue and diverse visuals. This graphic novel has been produced by a team of high school students at High Tech High Chula Vista in Chula Vista, California.

Students created a full length color comic addressing the rising problem of high school dropouts.  This project took a year of hard work requiring the entire team to pull long hours with many weekends involved to make the comic the best product possible.

HTH Graphic Novel Project used a collaborative process that included 18-20 students ranging from 9th to 12th grade working in departments. Click to learn more about Wacom Technology!Departments ranged from Research & Design, Illustration, Digital Art, Lettering, and Production. Of the technology used to create the work, none was more valuable than the Wacom technology to digitally render each page for the entire graphic novel.

Research & Development for the book was a rigorous research process that included interviewing more the 25 students, teachers, parents, and local dropout center personnel.  A professional writer was brought in to use as an editor for each step of the writing and story building process. The project was completed in a little over 15 weeks.

By bringing the issue of Nice Meeting You, Goodbye to the Alternative Press Expo, the HTH Graphic Novel Project hopes to spread the social message of high school drop outs, and also gain a larger audience of this issue and issues to come.

“This project will change the way that other schools look at after school activities.” Says Luke Piedad, contributing author and student.  “The process has opened my eyes to a wider perspective on life and avenues to explore journalism.”

WARNING: Interviews may contain spoilers for Sanctuary’s upcoming season.

The Comic-C Click to visit Comic-Con Internationalon 2010 Sanctuary Press interviews with Amanda Tapping, Ryan Robbins, Damian Kindler, Robin Dunne, and Josh Gates were held shortly after the panel that was moderated by Mr. Gates was over.

Thankfully the interview room was just across the hall from the Indigo Ballroom in the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel. Wormholeriders News Agency sincerely thanks Carole Appleby of the Sanctuary Press and Media division for our access.

As I walked into the room several reporters were seated at a round table. Then there were the television reporters that had their cameras situated towards the entrance of the room. The photographers were set up at the end of the room with the Comic Con back drop or background.Click to visit SyFy!

Team WHR also includes a cool Sanctuary set image provided by Amanda Tapping when she posted on Twitter TwitPic from late May 2010.

    Thanks Amanda!

There was a flurry of flashes as Amanda, Robin, Ryan, and Damian were being photographed. They did a group picture together. Then Amanda, Robin, and Ryan were asked to take one together. Afterwards Amanda and Ryan were photographed together. Lastly, each was asked to do solo shots. I love how one of the photographers asked Amanda to do a model type pose. She gladly obliged. She looked like she was having fun.

Both Damian and Ryan were pretty laid back when they took their solo pictures. Robin and Ryan definitely hammed it up for the cameras with his silly poses. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get Ryan in one of those pictures, sorry.

After their photo sessions each were split up to do interviews. I was seated with 10 other reporters. Before hand we were told we would get approximately 15 minutes with each individual. First up was Josh Gates from SyFy’s Destination Truth. Josh had moderated the Sanctuary panel which will be reported on in the near future. He talked about his show and what to expect from this upcoming season of Destination Truth (not included in the Sanctuary Press Room Red Carpet video below).

First up from Sanctuary was the lovely Amanda Tapping. Before beginning her interview she greeted each reporter, asked our names, and shook each of our hands. Time flew by too quickly during our time with Amanda!. It happens when she makes the interview fun. I was really sad that we did not have more time with her, but was happy with what she was able to share with us.

Ryan Robbins was next up. Ryan said hi to everyone and was nice. I was really surprised at how softly he spoke with us. As you will see in the video he does reveal more about his character and what is coming up in the new season of Sanctuary.

Damian Kindler was interviewed next. Damian was relaxed and greeted each of us. He had fun answering the questions asked of him. He did his best not to spoil what is to come for the upcoming season. He is pleased with the direction the show is going.

Last to be interviewed was the very funny, Robin Dunne. Like Ryan and Damian before him he too greeted each of us. Robin is a lively guy I have to say. Unfortunately, time was not on our side as he was only able to answer two questions before he was told his time was up. He was only able to answer both questions because he talked and explained quite a bit about what to expect this upcoming season.

Ryan’s last duty of the day was to do his SyFy channel plug. Amanda, Ryan, and I believe Damian had each done their SyFy plugs. I wasn’t able to see or hear much of them as I was focusing on Robin’s interview. I stuck around a bit to see him flub his lines. It was funny to watch and I wasn’t the only one that decided to stay.

Damian and Amanda were watching from behind the camera teasing him each time he would mess up. They would not go and eat until Robin had finished. I think on the fourth take he was able to complete his task much to Amanda and Damian’s delight. Before leaving the room I was able to thank Robin for this interview. He was very sweet and I do hope I get another opportunity to see him again.

Courtesy of MGM Studios, while I was at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con International, I had the privilege of being able to sit down with the absolutely wonderful David Blue of Stargate Universe.

We talked a bit about what David would like to do if he came Comic-Con as an attendee versus what Eli would come for, what music bands he currently loves and who he thinks would win in a battle of wits between Dr. Rush (Robert Carlyle) and Dr. McKay (David Hewlett) of Stargate Atlantis!

David also discussed Twitter, The Guild, Amanda Tapping, Felicia Day, Wil Wheaton, Fringe, NaddyCat, and being the Twitter recruiter at The Bridge SGU production site in Vancouver. David has been successful in that regard and has brought many of the SGU cast into the Twitter Universe itself for all the fans to chat with!
