We re-watched the entire first season to draw an interesting set of hypothesis at the end of our analysis. We believe that they may predict what is coming up for La Brea admirers in 2022.

The second season story arc and the overall endgame of the series foundation was eloquently setup for this spectacular science fiction drama in the season one finale with the tenth episode named “Topanga”, denoting the location of another wormhole time portal, likely one of many we will encounter that is about to close and change history if the correct things are not accomplished.

The are several critical pivotal characters in this episode. In “Topanga” we begin with young Isiah (Diesel La Torraca) who must get through the portal before it closes. Isiah must exist in the past, and as Gavin (Eoin Macken) in the future, or Izzy (Zyra Gorecki) and Josh (Jack Martin) will cease to exist because Gavin would have never married Eve (Natalie Zea), so Izzy and Josh would never have been born.

Other characters are important as well. This includes Doctor Rebecca Aldridge (Ming-Zhu Hii) and Silas (Mark Lee), who also play pivotal roles in “Topanga”.

Silas is critical because it is revealed that he already knows that Eve’s children will die if Isiah does not make it to the portal in time to transport him back to 1988 to become Gavin.

Rebecca is pivotal because during “Topanga” we learn near the end of the episode that she has setup what appears to be a time travel laboratory in 10,000 BC. In “Topanga”, Rebecca takes Scott (Rohan Mirchandaney) to this place near the La Brea survivor’s camp. Finally, the Ella Jones (Michelle Vergara Moore) character is linked to Rebecca in the past as we will learn in “Topanga”. As we have previously delineated in our season one La Brea analysis, Rebecca went back to the past in 10,000 BC to make certain that certain events unfolded as they are meant to be. Rebecca’s goal is to ensure that events in the future timeline resume their original shape in this season one “Endgame”.

Speaking of “Endgame”, if you have never watched La Brea, there are two classic science fiction stories that may encourage you to do so. The first is the 2001 series finale of Star Trek Voyager in a two hour time travel adventure aptly titled “Endgame”. In this story, Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) travels back to the past to change history by returning her crew home sixteen years earlier than the current future timeline depicts it. The effort is successful with Admiral Janeway sacrificing herself to the Borg Queen (Alice Krige) so that the younger Captain Janeway was able to save several members of her crew including Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), Tuvok (Tim Russ), and Chakotay (Robert Beltran). Each are either killed, wounded or inalterably changed by the events as they had originally unfolded in the future timeline. Although successful, the changing of the timeline in the new present no doubt changed the future, this time for the better.

    Avengers Endgame banner

The second analog to La Brea timeline changes is the Marvel Cinematic Universe series saga concluding with “Avengers Endgame”. In this superb film, the Steve Rogers / Captain America (Chris Evans) character is tasked with returning the “Infinity Stones” to various places in the past to restore the timeline and the lives of trillions of beings after Thanos (Josh Brolin) had used them to erase half of all living creatures in the universe. The effort to restore the timeline is successful but two main characters become casualties. Tony Stark / Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Black Widow / Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) are killed in the heroic effort. Instead of returning to the future to the exact place and time that he left from, Steve decided to stay in the past after World War Two in 1945 to marry his love, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) and live a full life. This is a development that undoubtedly changed the timeline from 1945 onward to some extent, but with no apparent ill effects to the present.

The changing of specific events in the timelines as discussed above, although largely beneficial, are similar in many respects to what could be happening in La Brea “Topanga”. Although the evidence indicates that the timeline is apparently restored,  new probing questions are left unanswered that may affect the timelines.

However, these resultant incidents may prove that there may be subtle alterations in the La Brea timeline that we will learn about in the second season. This includes the impact on lives of our young lovers, Josh and Riley (Veronica St. Clair) that may change them forever.

Before proceeding we include the Comic-Con 2021 Special Edition La Brea panel for your enjoyment.

This episode was written by series creator David Appelbaum and directed by Adam Davidson, both of whom do terrific work setting up the second season of La Brea. “Topanga” opens where we left off with Eve on the way to Topanga Canyon. Eve is tracking down Silas who has threatened to kill her son Josh and lover Levi (Nicholas Gonzalez) unless she surrenders Isiah to him.

La Brea lovers will recall that Isiah is a younger version of Gavin that Silas is so obsessed with, that he stabbed Rebecca who barely survived the incident in an attempt to get Isiah back.  It is known that Silas, like Rebecca, are from the future, having worked together previously on at least one occasion during their disastrous Mojave Expedition wormhole time portal event. There is obviously more to their story regarding other wormhole portal events that we will learn about as this terrific time travel saga unfolds.

    La Brea S1x10 Eve surrenders
Natalie Zea as Eve. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

Eve finds Josh and Levi being held hostage by Silas and his gang of malcontents. The scene switches to Josh and Levi who are tied up. Levi says “Josh, I never meant to hurt you or your Dad, I really am sorry”, referring to his affair with Eve.

At this point in the drama, Eve surrenders to Silas, confronting him with the fact that he knows Rebecca, and that Josh, Gavin and Izzy will cease to exist if Isiah does not make it to the “Topanga” wormhole portal to travel to 1988 and become future Gavin. Silas says “I know… but this is about my only family” referring to Isiah. This admission confirms that Isiah is related to Silas, a stunning confession that we will explore in our hypothesis at the end of this analysis. Eve demands to know “So who are you? Who are you really?”  Silas provides no response, and Eve is tied up with Josh and Levi. Eve obviously wanted to be captured, saying to Josh and Levi “I’ve got a plan”, then produces a sharp knife like rock and proceeds to cut through the ropes that bind her.

La Brea S1x10 The survivors learn about Topanga

We segue to the survivors camp where Sam (Jon Seda) is explaining to Rebecca, Scott, his daughter Riley, Lucas (Josh McKenzie), the ever whining Billy (Stephen  Lopez), Scott, Marybeth and the others that if they want to escape prehistoric La Brea, they must be at the Topanga Canyon mountain top before the wormhole time portal closes in 12 hours. Lucas questions this saying “There is no light in the sky”. Rebecca explains that “The light will be at the highest (mountain) peak in that area”.

Marybeth is also skeptical asking Rebecca “How the hell do you know any of this?” to which Rebecca makes an admission that shocks the survivors “Because I’m responsible” for the wormhole time portals) opening”. Rebecca also admits that “One of the people involved is Silas”, that they were both scientists who never meant for any of this to happen. There is an air of disbelief among the survivors.

La Brea S1x10 Paara and Ty warn everyone about Silas

Rebecca shares more details that she and Silas are trying to resolve what has happened with the wormholes, but in different ways. “I owe you that at least” says Rebecca. Sam, Riley and others say they will not use the wormhole time portal to travel to 1988, electing to seek another way home from prehistoric La Brea. Lucas and Marybeth decide that they will make the time travel journey. However, it is the opinion of this editor that Rebecca is obviously not telling the entire story to the survivors. Why? We will learn more about this near the end of the episode. Paara (Tonantzin Carmelo) and Ty (Chiké Okonkwo) come running into the camp revealing that Eve, Levi and Josh have been taken captive by Silas. “Look, we will explain everything in the way” says Ty. The main characters in the group, Sam, Riley, Lucas, Marybeth, Ty and Paara head off to Topanga to rescue Eve, Josh and Levi. Scott volunteers to stay behind to care for Rebecca who is still recovering from her stab wound.

La Brea S1x10 Lilly and Veronica discuss their plans

Meanwhile, as viewers will recall from the last episode, Veronica (Lily Santiago) and Lilly (Chloe De Los Santos) are already on the way to Topanga to time travel to 1988 so that Lilly will become Ella, with Veronica seeking a new life free of the guilt from her future identity. Lilly stuns Veronica by saying she will not go to 1988 at Topanga confessing “Rebecca told me If I did this, she’d help me find a way get back to my family”. The Rebecca promise is interesting because if Lilly doesn’t go to 1988 she cannot become Ella of the future. Distracted, Veronica steps in a metal spring loaded trap set for Saber-Toothed Tigers becoming injured as a result. Lilly seeks a way to free Veronica from the trap but is unable to do so. Veronica apologizes to Lilly for everything she has done, telling her to get the map to Isiah and sends Lilly on her way. This means that Rebecca must have decided  another method to manipulate the wormhole time portals as we will learn at the end of the episode.

La Brea S1x10 Sam saves Isiah

Back at Silas’ area, Isiah has followed Eve and is almost captured by one of his minions. By this time, Sam, Ty, Paara, Marybeth, Lucas and Riley have arrived, saving Isiah when Sam chokes the man saying “It’s okay, I am here to help”. Paara runs to Isiah and hugs him. Sam and Ty decide to free Eve, Josh and Levi, telling the rest of the group to take Isiah to the Topanga Canyon mountain top.

Ty and Sam jump the two remaining guards. Silas seeing that he is outnumbered now that Eve, Josh and Levi are freed, Silas runs off having figured out that someone else must be taking Isiah to the Topanga Canyon mountain top. Of interest is that while Silas has an older look with gray hair, he is remarkably nimble, indicating that he is actually a much younger man than everyone thinks.

La Brea S1x10 Josh feels ill

Subsequent to Silas’ escape, just as Rebecca had told them earlier, that when the portal is closing, and if there is any doubt about Isiah getting there in time, Izzy and Josh will begin to feel deathly ill.

Sure enough, Josh  begins to have painful symptoms in his entire body, collapsing on the ground. The freeing of Isiah by Sam offsets this factor and Josh feels a bit better.

This is only the beginning of a potential result of the doubt nature that Isiah may not make it to the Topanga Canyon mountain in time to enter the wormhole time portal to become Gavin of the future, marry Eve and become father to Izzy and Josh.

La Brea S1x10 Izzy begins to feel ill

In the future, Sophia (Virginie Lavurdure), Ella, Izzy and Gavin are examining the time portal map that Ella found in her jacket that Rebecca gave her before she traveled from prehistoric La Brea as Lilly in 1988. Izzy also begins to feel ill.

As they are examining the time portal map, they discover that another wormhole will open near the Duwamush River located near downtown Seattle Washington. Ella says she must go with them since she is remembering more of Lilly’s thoughts from the past that may be helpful. Sophia cautions them all that the entire modern city of Seattle could face a disaster similar to what happened to La Brea.

La Brea S1x10 Agent Markman becomes a believer

Knowing that the only proof they have is an ancient map, there is only one person with enough influence that can help, Senior Agent Adam Markman (Toby Truslove).  As they leave Ella’s home, Izzy begins to have the same pains in her body as the effect ripples through time. Izzy nearly collapses, obviously seriously impacted by her possible non existence!

Later when they meet with Markman, who was rightfully skeptical after the stunts Gavin and Sophia have pulled during season one, finally considers the ancient map valid when Sophia provides evidence of similar seismic activity to what occurred in La Brea when many were killed and our heroes were trapped in the past.

We move back to prehistoric La Brea where we learn that Sam has sent Isiah with Riley and Lucas to get to the Topanga mountain top wormhole portal in time. Along the way, one of Silas’ other minions jumps them on the trail, Marybeth pulls her gun a bit late and shoots the large man, who continues forward tackling Marybeth. During their struggle, the man stabs her in what will become a fatal injury for Marybeth. As the man then moves to kill Lucas, Levi arrives and shoots him dead. Sam confirms that Marybeth’s stab wound is very serious. Lucas decides to stay with his Mom while the others take Isiah to the Topanga Canyon mountain top. Unfortunately, Marybeth bleeds out and dies before she can get there. In a tender moment, Marybeth tells her son Lucas as she is dying that despite the differences between them, she loves him and makes Lucas promise “Don’t go back to your old life, make something of yourself”. Sadly, Marybeth, who turned out to be a good person after all, passes away with Lucas promising, then is observed hugging his dead Mom. In another tender moment, Ty and Paara share their love for each other. Paara tells Ty that he should go to 1988 to try and die in comfort rather than agony in prehistoric La Brea. As they continue their own journey to the Topanga Canyon mountain top wormhole, where they help save Isiah, Ty ultimately decides he will not go to 1988 and would rather stay with Paara.

La Brea S1x10 Rebecca ask Scott for help

At the survivors camp, Scott is in the midst of a rant about him being a sniveling coward. We are given a good belly laugh when the camera pans back to learn that Scott is talking to the cow he found! Rebecca courteously interrupts Scott asking for him to help her. “There’s somewhere I need to go a few miles from here” says Rebecca.  Scott, always intuitive, agrees but tells Rebecca “What you said about being responsible… That’s just the tip of the iceberg isn’t it?” As Scott laments about all the strange science fiction type of things that have occurred in prehistoric La Brea, including his cow with a laser barcode serial number burned into its neck, Rebecca “You get me where I need to go and I will give you all the answers you are looking for, or you can do nothing and things will stay exactly as they are”. Scott agrees to go with Rebecca stating “When do we leave?”

La Brea S1x10 They find the cave shortcut

We segue to the group heading to the Topanga Canyon mountain top. Eve has deduced that Silas is headed that way to stop Isiah from making the journey to 1988. Paara shares that she knows of a shortcut through a series of caves that will get them to the mountain top before Silas. The group heads out to catch up with Silas before he can change all future history by capturing young Isiah. Sam, Riley, Josh, Levi, Isiah, and Eve find the entrance to the cave shortcut. Josh wants to stay as close to Isiah as possible since his very existence depends on Isiah getting to 1988 to become future Gavin. Isiah, aware Josh’s life depends on him asks Josh “If I make it to 1988, you’ll be okay, right?”. Josh replies “I think so, the person you grow up to be, he’s pretty great”. As Eve and Levi enter the cave system of natural tunnels, Levi admits to her that he told Josh everything about their affair. “I just have to focus on Isiah” says Eve. As the group proceeds, difficulties are encountered including a rope ladder over a tar pit. Josh, Isiah and Eve make it up the ladder before it breaks splitting the group . Sam, Levi and Riley are forced use the slower way to the Topanga Canyon mountain top wormhole while Eve, Josh and Isiah proceed through the shortcut.

La Brea S1x10 They find the wormhole
Eoin Macken as Gavin, Zyra Gorecki as Izzy, Michelle Vergara Moore as Ella, Virginie Laverdure as Sophia, Toby Truslove as Agent Markman. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

We then move to Seattle Washington. Agent Markman has successfully evacuated the city but suddenly the seismic activity subsides. Just before calling off the operation, Sophia and Gavin are examining the map which starts to fade. Markman demands answers. Ella provides them stating she, as Lilly, was supposed to get the map to Isiah per Rebecca’s instructions. Why is the map fading? “But I think it means I might not make it” (did not make it to the Topanga mountain top wormhole in prehistoric La Brea) says Ella. Of critical importance, Ella is not feeling ill like Izzy and Josh are. So what all of this means is that somehow Rebecca was able to get Ella to 1988 or Ella would also have ceased to exist. Obviously, the timeline is being impacted by changes in the past that are affecting the future, making small changes that are shifting around them. Sophia confirms this when she checks the seismic data. Sophia notices on her computer that the seismic tremors have not gone away, but have shifted to a park campground twelve miles east outside of downtown Seattle. Markman looks at the evidence and says “Let’s go” using his authority to have the campground evacuated. Markman, Sophia, Izzy, Ella and Gavin quickly find the wormhole time portal.

La Brea S1x10 The Topanga wormhole is real

Quick segue back to Eve, Josh, and Isiah. They find the exit to the cave shortcut and emerge on the mountain top of Topanga Canyon to witness the wormhole time portal shimmering only a short distance away.

Silas, who has been waiting, hidden near the wormhole, jumps them and grabs Isiah from Eva as Josh collapses to the ground in what may be his last moments alive!

Eve chases and successfully fights Silas, getting Isiah back. A vengeful Silas threatens to kill the incapacitated Josh if Eve takes Isiah to the wormhole time portal. Fortunately, Paara and Ty show up in the nick of time to save the day! Ty pulls his gun as Paara says “It’s over Silas”.

a Brea S1x10 Isiah enters the wormhole to 1988

As Eve proceeds to the wormhole with Isiah, Silas then utters prophetic words after Isiah says he loves him and “I have to save Josh”. “Until we meet again my boy” proving that the two knew each other in a future timeline before somehow ending up in prehistoric La Brea.

With the sunset off in the distance, Eve gets Isiah to the wormhole time portal who enters it completing the time loop that ensures he will become Gavin in the future saving her two children in the process.

Izzy and Josh immediately start feeling better. Thankfully the “Topanga” story does not end here. Lilly shows up running to the portal to give Isiah the map, but it appears she is too late as the wormhole is shrinking in size.

Not so. Riley and Josh move close to Lilly trying to explain the wormhole is closing when suddenly the wormhole time portal, in a final blast, erupts and expands enveloping all three of them, no doubt transported to 1988. This event completes the time loop so not only does Isiah become Gavin, but Lilly will become Ella as well.

In the other fabulous closing sequences of a fantastic season, we are with Izzy, Gavin and Ella at the Seattle wormhole. Agent Markman wants to secure the portal so it cannot be utilized.

However, Izzy, and Gavin tell Markman otherwise. They have decided to time travel to the past, find their family, and to help the survivors. This is despite the fact that they will be 1,200 miles away from La Brea.

Sophia also warns them that they will have with no apparent means to return to the present timeline. Gavin says he must save his family and prepares to jump with Izzy .

Ella says she must go with Izzy and Gavin to the past as well, knowing that she had promised to come back for Veronica who has been injured by the Saber-Tooth Tiger trap near the prehistoric La Brea survivors camp.

The three heroes jump into the wormhole time portal successfully arriving on a beach near Seattle Washington State in the past of 10,000 BC. To their utter surprise, the trio hear a bellowing, looking left, they find out they have been are greeted by a giant woolly mammoth!

La Brea S1x10 Rebecca shows Scott her time travel laboratory

Just a few moments beforehand, Scott and Rebecca have arrived at their destination not far from the survivors camp in prehistoric La Brea. A short way off in a valley, Rebecca points to a fantastic skyscraper glistening in the light. What we witness is obviously Rebecca’s time time laboratory in 10,000 BC!

Scott asks who built it? “I did” says Rebecca. And now we know that there is much more to discover about this fabulous science fiction time travel series!

    Season Two Hypothesis (SPOILER ALERT!):

    La Brea S1

Before we leave 2021 in our past, we offer a conclusion and two hypothesis below on what may be happening in the second season to Ella, Riley and Josh in specific.

In concluding our review and analysis of season one, there has been much speculation by fans that Gavin is a younger version of Silas much like Isiah is a younger version of Gavin.

This hypothesis never held up. Why? Because Silas never became ill like Josh and Izzy did when it became doubtful that Isiah would make it to the wormhole time portal in time to arrive in 1988.

    La Brea S1 Lilly
Chloe De Los Santos as Lilly. Image by Ben King, courtesy NBC

We offer two season two hypothesis, never revealed until now. As mentioned above, we re-watched the entire first season to come to the following speculations.

First, since Lilly made it to the Topanga wormhole in time, but Ella, in the future, never suffered any sickness or ill effects, this must have always meant that Lilly was never in doubt to travel to 1988 to become Ella.

This was confirmed when the final eruption of the Topanga wormhole occurred taking young Lilly with the wormhole map in her pocket that helped Gavin find a way to prehistoric times to save his family.

But what are to become of of Riley and Josh?

    La Brea S1 Josh
Jack Martin as Josh Harris. Image by Ben King, courtesy NBC

We suspect that Silas is actually an older version of Josh and that Rebecca is an older version of Riley. The ages of these two when young are within correct ranges to become the older versions.

Although Silas is referred to as Isiah’s grandfather in season one, he never really looks that old or speaks that way, he just has scraggly hair, AND importantly, Silas referred to Isiah as “My boy”.

Could this be a proverbial “Easter Egg” often referred to in entertainment projects that was left by the creators and or writers for us to discover? Possibly.

    La Brea S1 Riley
Veroncia St. Clair as Riley. Image by Ben King, courtesy NBC

We never learned how old Rebecca is, but Riley is within range to become the older Rebecca. We know that Riley and Josh were falling in love. The question then becomes is Isiah their child? The episode “Father and Son” story may be the dead giveaway.

Could it be that the animosity we observed between Silas and Rebecca was the result of a marital spat about having to return Isiah to prehistoric La Brea to become Gavin of the future?

We shall see when season two comes to our screens next year! In the meantime, we wait patiently, but with avid anticipation for season two in 2022 to enjoy more adventures and stories in this marvelous science fiction drama series!

Welcome Back La Brea and Wormhole Time Travel Science Fiction Drama Lovers,

    La Brea poster
Videos and images are courtesy of NBC Entertainment.

This superb science fiction drama is coming to the season one finale with what really is a two part episode that begins with the ninth episode “Father and Son”, and concludes with the tenth episode appropriately named “Topanga” where we learn that another wormhole time portal is about to close that if not acted upon in a timely manner, the future may be changed, and with it, all history could be altered forever!

This two part drama is where we learn all the answers to many questions that have made La Brea such a wonderful series to watch, as well as tweet along with fans for fabulous fun each week during the first season!

The critical pivot character is the appearance of the Doctor Rebecca Aldridge (Ming-Zhu Hii), who, in a chat with Eve (Natalie Zea) in the last episode, brought the young Isiah (Diesel La Torraca) and Gavin (Eoin Macken) characters to the center of the story arc when it was revealed that young Isiah in prehistoric La Brea is Gavin in the future.

The story arc is greatly reinforced when we learn in “Father and Son” who the twelve year old young lady is that came through the wormhole time portal with Isiah on the mysterious date of November 16, 1988.

This revelation in the “Father and Son” episode is coupled with several other “Easter Eggs” that set up the season one finale next week in the tenth episode “Topanga” airing on the NBC Network on November 30, 2021.

The City On The Edge Of Forever
The City On The Edge Of Forever image courtesy Star Trek

Science fiction time travel movie and television series admirers enjoy this type of drama that, long ago in Star Trek The Original Series episode “The City On The Edge of Forever” (1967), written by Harlan Ellison, a legend in the science fiction community, laid a fabulous foundation for La Brea.

In “The City On The Edge of Forever”, Ellison depicted time as a circular series of events, much like a river with “eddies, currents and backwash” as Spock (Leonard Nimoy) stated, where the future can be changed if certain events do, or do not take place. Viewers of this number one top rated episode recall that Doctor McCoy (DeForest Kelley) went to the 1930’s and changed all history by saving Edith Keeler (Joan Collins) from dying in a traffic accident. At the end of the episode, “The Guardian of Forever” stated “Time has resumed it’s normal shape, many such journey’s are possible” whereby Captain Kirk (William Shatner) said “Let’s get the hell out of here!” after he had allowed his love in the past, Edith Keeler, to be killed as she was meant to be.

    The Final Countdown
The Final Countdown. Image courtesy United Artists

This theme regarding circular time anomalies was further embodied in the classic movie “The Final Countdown” (1980) where the events of Pearl Harbor in 1941 were almost changed when a modern day nuclear powered United States Aircraft Carrier was transported to December 7, 1941 just before the infamous “A Date That Will Live In Infamy” attack on the United States Fleet berthed in Hawaii.

Admirers of the movie will recall that the Commander Owens character portrayed by James Farentino was trapped in the past, where he worked until 1980 to ensure that the future remained consistent by making certain that the Warren Lasky character portrayed by Martin Sheen, actually got aboard the USS Nimitz in 1980 in order to complete the time loop and ensure that the future timeline from December 1941 onward was protected.

    Biffs Pleasure Paradise and Museum
Biffs Pleasure Paradise. Image courtesy Back to the Future

Perhaps the epic epitome of all circular time travel adventures is delineated with the three part “Back To The Future” series, in specific, part two (1989), when Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and Doc Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd) came back to 1985 from 2015 after Marty had purchased the Grey’s Sports Almanac in the future in order to place a few winning bets in 1985.

To their shock they found that the book had fallen into the hands of the 2015 version of Biff Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson) who went back to 1955 to give the book to his younger self. Old Biff changed all history when young Biff made a fortune on making bets documented in the almanac that resulted in the “Biff Tannen Museum and Pleasure Paradise Casino” in 1985, with his mother Lorraine (Lea Thompson), now an alcoholic, married to evil future Biff!

Only by going back to the past in 1955, and taking the book back from young Biff, was the shape of timeline in 1985 able to be returned to what it was supposed to be.

Much like Rebecca in La Brea, only by going back to the past in 10,000 BC could she make certain that events unfolded as they are meant to be, guaranteeing that timeline hopefully resumes its original shape. This type of terrific time travel adventure is what drove strong ratings for this science fiction drama series on NBC, always a tough network to survive on, ultimately ensuring the renewal for a second season of La Brea as Team WHR had projected several weeks ago.

This episode was written by Arika Lisanne Mitman and directed by Thor Freudenthal, both of whom do a fabulous job with this episode!

“Father and Son” opens where we left off with Eve tending to Rebecca who was stabbed by Silas the Pelt Man (Mark Lee) when he kidnapped Isiah. La Brea lovers clearly recall that Silas and Rebecca know each other, proving our theory that Rebecca has visited prehistoric La Brea, likely more than once in the past, to transport Isiah to November 16, 1988 where he grew up to become the adult Gavin.

Eve asks Rebecca “What do you mean Isiah needs my help?” , “Everything depends on it, you have to get him to Topanga (Canyon)” replies Rebecca.

At this point it is now clear that Rebecca had indeed intended to bring Isiah to the future to ensure that no time paradox is created, because if Gavin does not exist in the future, the entire interwoven Harris family of characters would never have become a central part of the La Brea story arc.

No Gavin to marry Eve, so no Josh (Jack Martin) or Izzy (Zyra Gorecki), since neither would ever have been born!

More critical, Gavin would never have seen the memory images of prehistoric La Brea, never have met Rebecca or Sophia (Virginie Laverdure).

All of whom investigated the wormhole time portals with Rebecca that have been opening doorways from the present to the past and visa-versa as we learn in “Father and Son”.

La Brea S1x09 Riley and Sam help Rebecca
Riley and Sam help Rebecca. Image courtesy NBC

This is not to say the portals would not have happened that caused sinkholes in Los Angeles, the Mojave Desert, and other places. It simply means that the central characters surrounding Gavin would likely never have met or even existed since all off future history would be impacted by time paradox manifestations.

Rebecca begins convulsions with blood spurting from her mouth. Levi rushes to get medical help from the survivors camp. Eve runs to get help from Riley (Veronica St. Claire) and her father doctor Sam (John Seda) as soon as they arrive at The Fort after sending Levi back in the Jeep.

Levi (Nicholas Gonzalez), who is with Paara (Tonatzin Carmelo) and Ty (Chiké Okonkwo), asks Eve what Rebecca said. “We need to find Isiah” says Eve with a look of panic on her face.

La Brea S1x09 Ella does not believe Gavin
Ella does not believe Gavin. Image courtesy NBC

This brings us back to Topanga Canyon in the future where Gavin, Izzy and Sophia are still examining the mini wormhole time portal sinkhole in Ella’s (Michelle Vergara Moore) backyard. Izzy says “I don’t understand how you can be from that world (prehistoric La Brea)”.

Gavin explains that he must have come through another wormhole time portal with Ella who he was separated from in 1988 when both could not be adopted by the same family. Since both came through the wormhole time portal together, Ella must be from the past also. Could it be that Ella is the older version of Lily (Chloe De Los Santos) who would be the same twelve year age in prehistoric La Brea as Isiah because Ella looks an awful lot like an older Lily? The icing on the cake is when Lily is playing tic-tac-toe with dark and light colored rocks with Marybeth (Karina Logue). We will learn more about this shortly. Ella, who had been running away from Gavin, shows up at her home and decides to confront the trio, threatening to call the police. Gavin explains who they are and that she (Ella) may be the key to saving his family trapped in prehistoric La Brea. However, Ella does not yet believe she came through the wormhole time portal.

La Brea S1x09 Scott marijuana and the cow
Scott, marijuana and the cow. Image courtesy NBC

After the introduction credits we are with Scott (Rohan Mirchandaney) who is dream like state smoking some marijuana, when a mooing cow suddenly shows up. Scott runs to the survivors camp to share his discovery with Josh, Riley, Lily, Veronica (Lily Santiago), Marybeth,  Lucas (Josh McKenzie), and the whining crybaby Billy (Stephen  Lopez) who is complaining about having to eat more wild mushrooms. Of note, the character of ever whining Billy is a masterpiece of acting by Lopez. Riley and the others think Scott is possibly experiencing marijuana hallucinations.

Subsequent to helping Rebecca, Ty, and Paara have just been told by Eve that Isiah will grow up in to become her husband Gavin. Ty is in disbelief. However, Paara shares that Silas and Isiah showed up only three years ago, approximately the same time as the disastrous Mojave Expedition. Silas told Paara at that time Isiah’s parents had been killed in the crash, and that The Fort people had no reason to not believe Silas at that time. Now Paara shares “It seems there is more to him (Silas) than we knew”. This brings the story arc full circle. Silas, who speaks perfect English, must have been a member of the Mojave Expedition, which is how he knows Rebecca. The questions then become; is Isiah really Silas’ adopted son, someone Silas found and adopted in prehistoric La Brea? And why is Silas trying to stop Isiah from going back to the future? Does Silas believe that if he stops Isiah from becoming Gavin, that his own participation in the Mojave Expedition mission three years earlier would never have occurred? Or is there more to it than anyone else knows he about Rebecca and Silas? We shall see,

La Brea S1x09 Josh listens to his Mom
Natalie Zea as Eve, Jack Martin as Josh. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

Josh thinks his Mom is talking crazy stuff. Eve explains that Isiah has Gavin’s eyes, that Isiah is about the same age as when Gavin was found in 1988, and that Gavin had visions of prehistoric La Brea.

Note: Only the viewers know that Gavin had no clear memories from his childhood until recently.

All go inside to get more answers from Rebecca who shares the entire story of another wormhole time portal on the highest mountain near Topanga Canyon that is now open, but will close tomorrow. Rebecca confirms that if Isiah doesn’t go back to the future in 1988, Izzy and Josh will never exist.

Worse, the longer they take to get Isiah there, both Izzy and Josh will become deathly ill and die because they will never have existed! Josh becomes a believer after hearing the truth from Rebecca that may result in his death. A search party is formed to find Isiah and Silas before the wormhole time portal to 1988 closes, sealing all their fates.

La Brea S1x09 Gavin tries to explain to Ella without success

In the present at Ella’s home, Gavin, Izzy and Sophia are desperately trying to explain everything to a still disbelieving Ella. When Gavin shares about his visions, he asks Ella if she has experienced them as well?

Ella reluctantly admits that she has had her own visions that began about the time when the Los Angeles La Brea wormhole time portal sinkhole opened. This clearly ties Ella to the how and when for an image came into her mind of her recent sculpture of the hand that viewers have seen in several places in prehistoric La Brea.

However, Ella  says she has a new life now and simply wants to be left alone. Gavin, Izzy and Sophia leave Ella’s home for the time being.

La Brea S1x09 Sam and Riley stay behind for Rebecca
Jon Seda as Sam, Veroncia St. Clair as Riley. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

At The Fort, Sam and Riley decide to stay behind to ensure that Rebecca survives the wounds she suffered from Silas.

In a tender moment between two young prehistoric lovers, Riley tells Josh “You’re not going to die, not when you’re finally starting to grow on me”.

The search party splits up into groups with Ty and Paara on foot and Levi, Eve and Josh in the Jeep to find Isiah and Silas who are now hiding out in a cave.

Isiah questions Silas about why Rebecca told him his name is Gavin? Silas says that Isiah is the only family he has and that Rebecca is not telling the truth. Isiah obviously thinks otherwise because when Silas goes to forage for some blueberries to feed himself and Isiah, it offers Isiah a chance to escape.

La Brea S1x09 Lily and Veronica have a chat
Chloe De Los Santos as Lilly, Lily Santiago as Veronica. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

In another part of the La Brea drama, Lily and Veronica have a chance to chat together alone, but under the watchful eyes of Marybeth. Veronica says they must leave the survivors camp because everyone knows what she did.

Lily tells Veronica that she will not leave because the others understand that they were both kidnapped and have forgiven Veronica.

Scott the stoner tries to convince everyone that he did see a cow, but no one believes him, thinking that Scott was having marijuana hallucinations.

Veronica gets a sparkle in her eyes thinking this may be a chance for her to gain favor with the survivor’s in the prehistoric La Brea camp.

La Brea S1x09 Scott and Veronica find the cow
Rohan Mirchandaney as Scott, Lily Santiago as Veronica. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

Veronica follows Scott helping him find the cow which has a barcode embedded on it’s neck.

This means that the cow came from the future since they never existed in that are in 10,000 BC.

The source of the cow is from yet another wormhole time portal, most likely from the Topanga area which is not too far away from the survivor’s camp.

We are finally pleased that Veronica was being sincere with Scott and has changed her ways after talking with Lily. It appears that Veronica and Scott may become another romantic couple in La Brea after both agree they have been judged too quickly by people in the survivor’s camp.

Later Veronica opens up to Scott, and as the two strike up a friendship, they find the cow, bringing it back to the survivor’s camp.

Yay! Looks like fresh milk and cheese will soon be on the menu soon in prehistoric La Brea for the survivors!

In the meantime, Levi and Eve decide to follow tracks left by Silas into rough mountainous terrain while Josh takes the Jeep to search the flat lands.

Josh finds Isiah, but a dangerous Saber-Toothed Tiger is prowling nearby that is stalking Isiah for a quick and easy lunch. Josh rams the giant cat, saving Isiah, but wrecks the Jeep in the process.

This set of scenes is where the episode name “Father and Son” comes from when we observe Josh and Isiah walking and talking together after Josh rescues Isiah.

Levi and Eve rush to the scene when both Eve and Josh recognize that the scar on Isiah’s hand is exactly like Gavin’s. Both become absolute believers in Rebecca’s knowledge that Gavin is Isiah! The four set off on foot unaware that Silas has been observing them.

La Brea S1x09 Paara kisses Ty
Paara kisses Ty. Image courtesy NBC

Paara and Ty find the tracks of Levi, Eve, Josh and Isiah, and start following them.

Ty suffers a nose bleed and subsequently confesses to Paara that he is seriously ill. Paara, who has been attracted to Ty for some time, expresses genuine sympathy for him.

In a tender moment for these two, Paara kisses Ty cementing their own romance in prehistoric La Brea.

    Our theory?

No matter what happens, Ty will choose to stay with Paara to live in the past in prehistoric La Brea, since he has no one that loves him in his old future life in the future.

La Brea S1x09 Eve opens up to Isiah about his having to leave
Natalie Zea as Eve, Diesel La Torraca as Isiah. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

On their way to the mountain top wormhole time portal located in Topanga Canyon, Eve opens up to Isiah, telling him the truth about his having to leave his home in prehistoric La Brea to go to another “light in the sky” that has opened up and that it is nearby.

Eve, without revealing that he will ultimately become her husband in the future, informs Isiah that he will be living in a different time, in the future, where everything will be okay for him.

Isiah balks about this at this at first, but soon changes his mind when Silas is observed in the distance.

Silas has formed a hunting party of his own with a few people from The Fort that have clearly rejected Paara’s leadership and have instead remained loyal to Silas.

La Brea S1x09 Ella believes after seeing the ancient artifact
Ella believes Gavin after seeing the ancient artifact. Image courtesy NBC

In the present, Gavin, Izzy and Sophia leave Ella’s home and come up with a plan to convince Ella to help them. They head to the archeological dig site to try and find artifacts that might match Ella’s artwork or sculptures. Sophia gets them in to the artifact tent where Gavin finds a match.

Sophia warns Gavin via cellphone that security guards are coming. Gavin texts back to Sophia to kill the electric power, grabs the correct artifact and they high tail it out if there. Gavin, Izzy and Sophia then go back to Ella’s home with the artifact where Gavin has another vision of Eve learning that Izzy and Josh will die if she is unsuccessful in getting Isiah to the wormhole time portal in Topanga Canyon.

As Ella looks at the rock that has a fossil of a prehistoric mosquito on it that matches her own artwork, she has a vision of when she was playing tic-tac-toe, recalling Marybeth saying that her name was Lily! The time paradox is that young Lily went to prehistoric La Brea from 2021, only to return with Isiah to 1988 in the circular time loop that is self fulfilling.

La Brea S1x09 Riley and Sam bring Rebecca to the survivors camp
Riley and Sam bring Rebecca to the survivors camp. Image courtesy NBC

Riley agrees with Sam to let Rebecca out of her sick bed when they discover that Rebecca claims she can find another artifact, a notebook that Silas had hidden.

The notebook is from the future that will help save not only Josh and Izzy, but perhaps everyone who has been trapped in 10,000 BC.

The three head off to share their discovery. Sam and Riley bring Rebecca to the survivor’s camp with a page from the notebook that Silas had stashed.

Once there they share a revealing father and daughter moment while Sam copes with his PTSD anxiety. In a moment of crystal clear thought, Sam shares that if there is a wormhole time portal to 1988, there must be another way to get them back to his son, Riley’s brother Andrew (Ethan Ritchie), and her mother in the present.

La Brea S1x09 Isiah at the rope bridge

Levi, Eve, Josh and Isiah are observed on their way to Topanga Canyon.

Isiah knows of a rope bridge across the canyon. Eve and Isiah get across, but Silas is right behind the. Levi cuts the bridge to allow Eve and Isiah to escape.

Unfortunately, Levi and Josh are captured by Silas who threatens to kill then if Eve doesn’t surrender Isiah at a crossroads four miles from the now useless bridge.

Eve further opens up to Isiah regarding why he must go to a different time; that her children, Josh and Izzy will become sick and die if she is not successful in getting him to the Topanga “light in the mountain”.

Isiah understands just as Ty and Paara link up with them to continue their journey to the open wormhole time portal at the peak near Topanga Canyon.

La Brea S1x09 Levi and Josh come to an understanding

    The episode comes to an exciting conclusion with series of interlocking sequences;

Levi and Josh come to an understanding about Levi’s affair with Eve. Both agree they can discuss details later after they escape from Silas and his gang.

Sam, Riley and Rebecca are at the survivors camp where Rebecca explains that time is not always linear, but is circular in some instances in nature.

Rebecca offers them a path back to the future, but only through 1988, thirty-three years from where they all came from. The survivors must each decide to stay or go, while Rebecca gives Lily a note from Silas’ artifact notebook.

Lily convinces Veronica to take her to the wormhole time portal at Topanga Canyon. Veronica tells Scott she can start a new life there free of her guilt.

La Brea S1x09 Ella remembers the time portal map Rebecca gave her

In the future Ella then remembers something she had forgotten long ago, the note Rebecca gave her in prehistoric La Brea.

The note is actually a map of wormhole time portals that are scheduled to open and close, listed by date.

In addition to the Topanga Canyon portal, they all discover that a new one is scheduled to open in Seattle Washington the very next day!

The last scene is with Isiah and Eve who are waiting for Ty and Paara near the top of Topanga Canyon near the wormhole time portal. “Whatever happens to me, you get yourself up that mountain okay!”

Eve then takes off to find Silas who is still holding Josh and Levi captive.

And that’s it La Brea lovers. We must wait until next week to find out the answers to the following questions!

Will Silas cooperate with Eve, and just who the heck is Silas in any event?

Does Veronica go back to 1988 herself to start a new life, and who is she in the future?

Will Gavin and Izzy or Levi and Eve use a portal in Seattle Washington to go where it leads?

Will Lily get to the future with Isiah so as to become Ella and Gavin to be able to save Josh and Izzy?

What happens if Lily and Isiah do not make it to the wormhole time portal in time to go back to to 1988?

See you week for the exciting season one finale of La Brea when we will all find out the answers to everything!. In the meantime, below is a fun video courtesy of NBC about how Jack Martin (Josh) would survive in 10,000 BC. Enjoy!

Welcome Back La Brea and Wormhole Time Travel Science Fiction Drama Lovers,

    La Brea poster
Videos and images are courtesy of NBC Entertainment.

The Team WHR grade for La Brea is now an “A+” and we are ecstatic that La Brea has been renewed for a second season! Congratulations to everyone involved with the production of this superb science fiction drama series!

“Origins” appearance of the Doctor Rebecca Aldridge (Ming-Zhu Hii) character in a chat with Eve (Natalie Zea) after a fight with Silas (Mark Lee) over young Isiah (Diesel La Torraca) in the eighth episode is nice icing the cake for this series. La Brea has become similar to “Fringe”, a favorite science fiction time travel series of ours, when the importance of the young Isiah and the Gavin (Eoin Macken) characters are brought to the forefront of the story arc.

In “Origins”, the secret date of November 16, 1988 mentioned in previous episodes is revealed. The reason for the wormhole time portals is now completely clear. As we suspected, Rebecca had jumped into the prehistoric past previously, proving that she has been experimenting with time travel longer than anyone ever knew.

On ratings, “The Storm” episode rebounded to 4.696 million live views and a .58 share after an expected dip due to the MLB World Series to 4.03 million viewers with a 0.43 share. In contrast, the fifth episode of La Brea captured 5.1 million with a 0.6 ratings share. Beginning with 6.2 million viewers for the Pilot episode, 4.9 million viewers for the second episode, 4.98 million for the third episode, and 5.0 million for the fourth episode, the strong ratings ensured the renewal for a second season as we had projected.

    Origins:

La Brea S1x08 Cleaning up after The Storm
Cleaning up after The Storm. Image courtesy NBC

The episode opens at the survivors camp with everyone including Eve, Levi (Nicholas Gonzalez), Marybeth (Karina Logue), Josh (Jack Martin), Lucas (Josh McKenzie), Riley (Veronica St. Claire), Scott (Rohan Mirchandaney), Ty (Chiké Okonkwo), Sam (John Seda), Lily (Chloe De Los Santos), and even the whining crybaby Billy (Stephen  Lopez) trying to salvage whatever they can after “The Storm” which laid waste to their new survivor’s camp home in prehistoric La Brea.

At this point viewers still do not know what has happened to Veronica (Lily Santiago) who ruthlessly attacked Ty when he was only trying to help the malcontent young lady in the episode before last.

Viewers know that Veronica’s behavior is a result of her being a victim of child abuse, and suffers from emotional issues. More on Veronica later.

The scene switches as we visit with Eve and Levi who are having a chat about Levi standing up for Eve.

In “The Storm”,  the survivors, including Josh and Lucas had planned on banishing Eve and Marybeth to the wilderness for stopping the incident that would have killed everyone aboard according to information from the future obtained from Gavin, from ever taking off.

Eve and Levi share a few tender moments together with Eve asking Levi to move in with her family at the large bus. Levi politely declines, no doubt because Josh, who just forgave his Mom during “The Storm”, might not understand the two are lovers in prehistoric La Brea.

They briefly hold hands and part each other’s company. Viewers will recall, after the survivors ultimately banded together to save Marybeth and Lucas, they decided unanimously to not banish Eve and Marybeth.

In the meantime, Scott, Josh and Riley are building a greenhouse constructed out of windshields to protect their food supply so they do not have to go into the dangerous forest as often.

After “The Storm”, a somewhat less obstreperous Lucas comes along to encourage them.

Suddenly the “A Frame” tent pole type structure collapses.

“We’re so screwed” says the ever pragmatic Riley who will turn out to be correct in more ways than one as “Origins” continues with many surprises just up ahead.

La Brea S1x08 Sam takes PTSD anxiety medication

Next we are with logical Sam the doctor in the large bus that he and Riley share with Eve and Josh. We learn that Sam has an anxiety disorder known as PTSD from his time in Afghanistan. Sam’s condition requires that he take daily medicine to alleviate the symptoms.

When Sam opens his prescription bottle to take the last pill, the pill slips between Sam’s fingers and into a crack in the floor of the bus. The PTSD factor will become more critical for Sam as the La Brea saga continues because he starts displaying anxiety about how Riley and Josh obviously feel for each other, as well as what we do not know yet, a display of aggression against Veronica who turns up later in the episode.

What we do know is that Paara (Tonantzin Carmelo), leader of The Fort people, who saved Ty after the attack by Veronica, agreed to show Ty the way back to the survivor’s camp. On a side note, maybe Paara can help Sam in the future since we have learned previously that she understands herbal medicine? We shall see.

La Brea S1x08 The survivors fan out

Outside we hear Lily screaming for who she thinks is Ty nearby in the forest. Everyone fans out to determine if it is an injured Ty trying to get back to the survivors camp.

Instead we meet young Isiah who we had previously met during “The Fort” episode.

Viewers will recall Isiah had helped save the survivor’s group that went to “The Fort” a few episodes back from Silas the Pelt Man who had planned to capture them for his own dubious purposes.

During “The Fort” we learned that young Isiah did not like Silas for some reason. And why not? Silas always looks just plain mean and nasty! We will learn much more about what motivates Silas later in “Origins”.

After the young man recognizes Eve subsequent to falling and scraping his hand, Isiah is taken to the survivor’s camp for questioning and medical attention.

La Brea S1x08 Isiah has a secret

Sam treats Isiah’s wound at the makeshift infirmary in the bus. Lily says “It’s nice to meet you” to Isiah as they head outside. Inside the bus Ty has returned to the survivors camp.

He, Eve, Levi, Sam, Lucas, Scott and Marybeth try to figure out why Isiah came all the way to the survivors camp other than to spy on them.

Ty reveals that Paara told him that Silas is harmless. This will prove to not be the case. Ty explains he does not believe that Isiah was sent to gather intelligence on the survivors. Ty further explains that The Fort people are more scared of the survivors than they are of The Fort people and that Silas had nothing to do with the two electrocuted bodies the survivors discovered.

Our theory is that Isiah simply followed Paara out of curiosity to find a way to get away from mean old Silas and his mysterious demeanor. Perhaps Isiah just wants to live among nicer people? Or is there more to it?

A bit later in “Origins” we discover the why of these questions when the survivors send another expedition to The Fort on a diplomatic mission. Levi, Ty, and Eve use the Jeep and head out to The Fort to take Isiah home find some answers.

Isiah says of riding in a Jeep for the first time; “It’s fun”!

Isiah reveals that he has been to the survivors camp, saw them come through the wormhole time portal, and visited “a bunch of times, I didn’t mean to spy, I just wanted to make sure you weren’t hurt”.

Isiah also says Grandpa Silas believes “The Sky People are dangerous”, that you “are our enemy”, but that he (Isiah) doesn’t believe that.

Suddenly, a large band of The Fort people with spears and other weapons block the dirt path they are driving on, capture all of them to take them to The Fort!

La Brea S1x08 Paara says she will help the survivors
Nicholas Gonzalez as Levi, Tonantzin Carmelo as Paara, Natalie Zea as Eve. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

Silas, who doesn’t trust “Sky People”, wants to know why they came back to The Fort?

Eve explains they found Isiah injured, was only bringing him back home and that they need help to survive.

Silas scolds Isiah after he had told him to not go back to the survivors camp. However, Silas appears a bit more sympathetic.

Paara debates with Silas and makes a decision; “Maybe there is something we can do” (to help the survivors) by giving them supplies.

Ty says “Thank you” as he and Paara smile at each other in a sign of their mutual affection that began during “The Storm”.

La Brea S1x08 Gavin gets a call from Sophia by lies to Izzy about it
Gavin gets a call from Sophia by lies to Izzy about it. Image courtesy NBC

The action segues to Gavin in the present as he tries to contact Sophia  (Virginie Laverdure) without success. Speaking of anxiety, this is what is the cause that often triggers Gavin’s visions. He sees the scene where Levi and Eve held hands. The vision ends when Izzy (Zyra Gorecki), who has been frantic over the loss of Eve and Josh, comes into their kitchen on her way to school.

A call comes in from Sophia who had made contact with the assistant of the woman named Ella Jones (Michelle Vergara Moore) who made the sculpture of the hand Gavin exactly as he has seen in his visions. Ella, who may be Gavin’s sister whom he was separated from when she was 12 years old, is obviously having visions too, otherwise how could Ella, only six days ago, have made the hand sculpture?

The assistant informs Gavin and Sophia that Ella has been keeping a low profile for some reason, but agrees to try, taking Sophia’s business card.  While leaving the antique shop, Ella drives up, but leaves quickly when Gavin tries to approach her vehicle.

La Brea S1x08 Lunch with The Fort people
Lunch with The Fort people. Image courtesy NBC

Back at The Fort, Paara agrees to help them grow a vegetable garden so they can survive and invites them to lunch where the food is plentiful.

Paara also explains that there are many other villages but that her people were not always peaceful due to interference from the “Sky People” when sixty years earlier a wormhole time portal opened in the ocean with some who had warlike intentions causing many decades of conflict.

Since that time, The Fort people, along with the allied villages have always been suspicious of the “Sky People” who caused generations of war until recently when Ty and Paara spent quality time together in a cave during “The Storm”. Isiah asks Paara if Eve, Ty, and Levi can “stay for lunch”. Paara agrees with Eve saying “We’d love to”.

La Brea S1x08 Izzy meets Andrew
Ethan Ritchie as Andrew Velez, Zyra Gorecki as Izzy. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

We move a scene with Izzy at her school.  We meet Andrew (Ethan Ritchie), son of Sam Velez and brother of Riley.

Izzy and Andrew share memories of their lost family members who have disappeared in the wormhole time portal.

Andrew informs Izzy that a group of those who lost family are conducting vigils to deal with their stress. Andrew hands Izzy a flyer poster about the event.

Izzy declines saying such “is not for me”.

However, Izzy keeps the flyer and will change her mind later.

A potential romance for Izzy? Perhaps.

La Brea S1x08 Sam has handcuffed Veronica

Speaking of romances, back in prehistoric La Brea, Josh and Riley are on patrol together when their relationship blossoms with a kiss. In another part of the forest, Veronica tracks down Lily who was delivering water to the patrol teams.

Veronica threatens Lily who is saved from being kidnapped again by Sam and Marybeth. Sam and Marybeth decide to use restraint on Veronica with Marybeths’s handcuffs until they can consult with the rest of the survivors.

Veronica is handcuffed to the steering wheel of a car while Sam and Marybeth take a moment to chat. Veronica has a panic attack.  Hyperventilating, Veronica stops breathing. Sam rushes to help Veronica giving her CPR and is successful in resuscitating her. Veronica and Lily hug while Sam realizes his own anxiety attacks caused the situation. Later, Riley confronts her father and gets the truth out of Sam about his anxiety attacks caused by PTSD after he served in Afghanistan.

Back at The Fort, lunch is over. Isiah is told she has chores to do, instead Isiah asks Silas if she can show Eve the nearby lake. Paara says she and Ty will go along, to which Silas agrees. As Eve leaves for the lake, Levi states he still does not trust Silas and his warriors, indicating he is going to snoop around while they are gone. “Be careful” says Eve.

At the lake Eve learns from Isiah that his parents are dead, killed during the wars, but Grandpa Silas and he survived. Levi shows up with the wallet taken from Silas’ possessions. The wallet is from one of the men he was supposed to rescue raising Levi’s suspicions. They confront Silas who explains that he and Paara found another who had been electrocuted, and that all they were doing was ensuring the men had a proper burial. Paara confirms that there is another group of other people that are murdering innocent victims. Suddenly, The Fort alarm horn sounds. Isiah has been captured by someone. Is it the warlike individuals who are killing people? Eve, Ty and Levi volunteer to help find Isiah, Silas says no, but Paara agrees they need everyone’s help, but what about Rebecca?

We are then in the present day at a beach after Izzy had cut school. Gavin knows that Izzy will be there since he and her Mom used to come to the beach all the time.

Izzy tells her Dad that she knows he is lying about his working with Sophia.

Gavin comes clean telling Izzy the truth and accompanies Izzy to the vigil for those lost in the wormhole time portal.

Here Izzy meets Andrew, his mother and many others who have lost loved ones but are losing hope.

Izzy tells them to not give up just as Sophia calls with the address of Ella who lives in Topanga Canyon. Gavin and Izzy head out to link up with Sophia.

Back in prehistoric La Brea, the search for Isiah is underway. The crisis has brought everyone, including Silas and Levi together to find the missing Isiah.

We had already observed Isiah being dragged along by a woman. Eve and Levi find clues left by Isiah.

In a surprise scene, we learn that it is Rebecca who has taken Isiah, but for what purpose? Of course it was Rebecca, because she knows the secret about Isiah!

And guess what! Silas knows Rebecca on a first name basis!

Yikes! No wonder Silas doesn’t like the “Sky People”.

La Brea S1x08 Silas takes off with Isiah

We can surmises that Rebecca has obviously been to prehistoric La Brea more than once in the past.

However, we still do not know precisely for what purpose of reason? This all becomes clear in the next revealing scenes!

Silas attacks Rebecca, stabbing her. Rebecca pleads with Silas that he doesn’t know how important Isiah is, but Silas will not listen to Rebecca. Instead Silas tells Isiah that Rebecca is a liar as they head away from The Fort.

Paara, Ty, Eve and Levi arrive after Grandpa Silas has taken off with Isiah.

Levi somehow knows of Rebecca, and agrees to try and track down Silas and Isiah, promising to explain everything later while the others take Rebecca back to The Fort where they can hopefully stop her bleeding, and save her life.

Meanwhile, Gavin and Sophia hit pay dirt after giving Ella’s license plate number to an ally at the Department of Homeland Security. Sophia tells Gavin she has obtained Ella’s car registration address.

Gavin and Izzy meet with Sophia at Ella’s address.

Gavin has another vision, this time seeing Eve and Levi having lunch at The Fort. Gavin also tells Sophia about the affair between Eve and Levi.

They arrive at Ella’s home only to find what is left of a wormhole time portal in the back yard. Gavin has a vision while looking at a scar on his right hand, recalling that they are not visions, but memories of his. Izzy and Sophia in the future ask Gavin what he is talking about? We will discuss these concepts at the end of the episode.

La Brea S1x08 Rebecca says the boy is special there is something he has to do
Rebecca says the boy is special there is something he has to do. Image courtesy NBC

The episode winds down when Levi doesn’t find Isiah but shows Eve the photograph of Rebecca with the Mojave Expedition that he came to rescue, so it’s all connected. However, there is more, much more to this.

The final scenes are with Grandpa Silas who is with Isiah who says Rebecca told him his real name is Gavin! Rebecca confirms this when she informs Eve that Isiah is Gavin from his youthful days in prehistoric La Brea! The proof? The wound Isiah got earlier in the day on his right hand is exactly like the scar Gavin has on his right hand in the future.

What this all means is that when Gavin was found as a little boy in 1988, somehow he had been transported to the future from prehistoric La Brea and his visions are actually his own memories from his younger life there. Rebecca then tells Eve that “The boy is important” and that she needs Eve to help Isiah.

The time paradox may not come full circle because if Isiah does not return to the future then Gavin can never exist. This of course would result in completely messing up the space time continuum with ramifications including alternative realities that may have far worse consequences!

    Questions To Contemplate:

Will Rebecca survive to help everyone, or did we witness her death bed confession?

What is Ella’s role in all of this, and exactly who is she in relation to Gavin?

Will Isiah (Gavin) be able to make the journey to 1988?

What ultimately becomes of Gavin if Isiah doesn’t?

Tune in next week for the ninth episode named “Father and Son” that sets up the season one finale to learn the answers to these questions!

Except for the fact that we had wanted to see Doctor Rebecca Aldridge (Ming-Zhu Hii) at the end of the episode end, the Team WHR grade for La Brea remains a Straight “A” for delightful drama and exciting entertainment value.

Rebecca will appear in the eighth episode appropriately named “Origins”.

The wormhole time portal that has remained open during the first six episodes is now closed for the time being. We were quite pleased that the wormhole was referred to as a “portal” in “The Storm”.

Viewers also learn more about the cryptic date of November 16, 1988 during “The Storm”, which was a nice touch to be added to the story arc.

Ratings for the first six episode weeks have been strong. The sixth episode dipped a touch, as expected, due to the MLB World Series to 4.03 million viewers with a 0.43 share. The fifth episode of La Brea was up 100,000 viewers to 5.1 million with a 0.6 ratings share in the very competitive United States viewing environment.

With 6.2 million viewers for the Pilot episode, 4.9 million viewers for the second episode, 4.98 million for the third episode, and 5.0 million for the fourth episode. In our considered opinion, La Brea is set for a second season renewal if the ratings continue to remain this high.

The reason for the wormhole time portal manifestation is now becoming clearer. Since we know Rebecca has jumped into the prehistoric past during “The Way Home”, we suspect that she has been experimenting with time travel longer than anyone expected, all of which led to the Mojave Desert wormhole catastrophe and other portals to the past.

    The Storm:

La Brea S1x07 Eve digs a grave for Diana

The episode was written by the La Brea series Executive Story Editor, and co-Executive Producer Aiyana White whom we admire and respect. “The Storm” was directed by talented Thor Freudenthal who also serves as an Executive Producer of the series.

“The Storm” opens with Eve (Natalie Zea) digging a grave for Diana (Vanessa Buckley) who was accidentally shot by Marybeth (Karina Logue) during “The Way Home”. “This was the least I could do” says Eve to  Marybeth who counters with some sympathy; “You’re hurting, but this isn’t on you… Neither of us wanted this to happen”.

As mentioned in our last analysis noted above, Marybeth’s character has softened. Moreover, a bond has developed between Eve and Marybeth because both are facing challenges with their sons difficult behavior.

La Brea S1x07 Marybeth sympathizes with Eve
Marybeth sympathizes with Eve. Image courtesy NBC

Josh (Jack Martin) is angry with his Mom Eve for believing in Gavin (Eoin Macken) again, who Eve had characterized as a hallucinating alcoholic. Recalcitrant Lucas (Josh McKenzie) is angry with his Mom Marybeth for killing his father in the past for an apparent heroin drug deal that went sour.

We will learn later that Marybeth was justified in killing her husband and Lucas’ father because he was a dirty cop trying to blame others when he got caught. More on this later.

As such, Eve and Marybeth have become closer as a result of the issues they both face as mothers. In a direct reference to killing Diana and an indirect reference to killing her husband and Lucas’ father, Marybeth states “Once someone’s decided you’re the bad guy, there’s no changing their mind”.

La Brea S1x07 Civil War gold from 1863 in prehistoric La Brea

Next we are with Josh, Riley (Veronica St. Claire) and Scott (Rohan Mirchandaney). Scott comments on their be all being upset about the wormhole time portal closing, by saying “I know we’re all freaking out about the portal closing, but this is going to cheer you up”. Scott leads them to the chest of Confederate gold that he and Lucas found during the last episode.

“Still waiting for this cheers us up part” Josh quips, to which Scott responds with his theory that the gold came through another wormhole time portal in 1863. With this theory, there could be many others with items that may be of help to get them back home, or even another wormhole time portal that could appear to do so.

    Brilliant thinking Scott!

La Brea S1x07 Angry Josh does not get it as Riley looks on in disbelief
Angry Josh does not understand Scott’s theory as Riley looks on in disbelief at Josh. Image courtesy NBC

Riley compliments Scott with “This might be my desperation talking, but this actually makes sense”. Josh, still angry over being let down in “The Way Home” is negative, blaming Eve, who Josh says made sure they are never getting back home.

Josh stomps off like the immature teenager that he is. Being optimistic, I’ll go with Scott’s theory and Riley’s good common sense. As for Josh, he needs a good shift kick in the pants, followed by a slap across the face, perhaps a spanking from Eve and maybe a kiss from Riley. More on that a bit later.

In my opinion, these are likely the only things that will help Josh grow up since when he meets his Mom, he is in a foul mood.

La Brea S1x07 The funeral for Diana
The funeral for Diana. Image courtesy NBC

Josh is still blaming Eve for not allowing him to get on the Vertical Take Off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft which would have resulted in his death as we learned in the last episode.

Eve, like Riley earlier, stares in disbelief at her juvenile son’s behavior in a way that only a mother or father could understand.

A bit later in the morning, all of the survivors are shown attending Diana’s funeral.

Levi (Nicholas Gonzalez) is observed performing the eulogy, apologizing for not being able to get her back home. Meanwhile, juvenile Josh glares at Eve, blaming her for everything.

Time for you to grow up Josh!

La Brea S1x07 Ty is tied up by Veronica
Ty is tied up by Veronica. Image courtesy NBC

Next we are with Ty (Chiké Okonkwo) who was attacked by Veronica (Lily Santiago) near the end of “The Way Home”. Ty is one of the most favorite characters in La Brea, a good guy who is always trying to help others even though he apparently has incurable cancer.

Veronica is a real victim herself, both of Stockholm Syndrome caused by her being kidnapped, and from likely sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of her deviate, now dead abductor, who was thankfully eaten by hungry prehistoric wolves earlier if the series.

Veronica left Ty helpless and tied up near The Fort people’s ceremonial stone artifact.

We do not know where Veronica is at this point, since she does not appear in this episode.

La Brea S1x07 Paara saves Ty from a rattlesnake

Paara (Tonantzin Carmelo), leader of The Fort people is nearby. When she comes charging at Ty with a large hunting knife, Ty thinks he is done for.

Instead, we learn that Paara saves Ty’s from a rattlesnake that was about to strike.

Paara chops the reptile in half, saving Ty’s life, cuts the ropes to free him and goes to leave.

When Ty passes out, Paara returns to help him, taking him to a cave where she stitches up his wounds.

Paara tells Ty the Sky People have been coming to prehistoric La Brea for as long as she can remember.

Paara goes to leave, then sees “The Storm” gathering in the distance through the mouth of the cave. “Neither of us can leave” says Paara.

La Brea S1x07 Eve and Marybeth are voted out

Subsequent to the funeral, the survivors, including Sam (John Seda), Levi and the resident complaining whining Billy (Stephen  Lopez) turn on Eve and Marybeth for the death of Diana.

Lucas is particularly harsh telling everyone that it’s not the first time Marybeth has killed someone, going on to say this killing was not in self defense.

Although not giving details at the present time, Lucas is referring to Marybeth killing his father as has been revealed in previous episodes.

Lucas tells them they both need to leave the survivors camp unless Marybeth turns over her gun for killing Diana as butt head Billy has demanded.

La Brea S1x07 Eve and Marybeth get ready to leave
Eve and Marybeth get ready to leave. Image courtesy NBC

Josh does nothing to defend his Mom, now seeming to support anyone, including Lucas to get even with his juvenile hatred of his own mother.

Shame on you Josh and Lucas! You both need a good spanking right about now!

Eve defends Marybeth calling on Levi to tell them the truth that had anyone been allowed to take off in the VTOL, would have died.

Sam tries to calm everyone down, but Lucas calls for a vote. The majority, including Josh, vote to expel Eve and Marybeth from the safety of the group! “There you have it” gloats evil Lucas as Eve and Marybeth accept they have been banished and must leave.

La Brea S1x07 Gavin must sign an NDA
Gavin must sign an NDA. Image courtesy NBC

We segue to Gavin. He is in handcuffs. Agent Markman (Toby Truslove) forces Gavin to sign a Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA) or face imprisonment for his actions in “The Way Home” when he tried to fly an enhanced VTOL into the wormhole time portal that Rebecca parachuted into during the that episode.

Gavin signs the NDA and goes home to Izzy (Zyra Gorecki) who is understandingly frantic over this development.

To the rescue comes Sophia (Virginie Laverdure), also under NDA. Sophia meets with Gavin who tells her that Rebecca told him about the date when it all began, November 16, 1988.

Gavin and Sophia begin to plan action against the documented NDA to save the ones they love. Sophia says she can get access to secret files about Gavin’s past that may help them unlock the mystery of November 16, 1988.

La Brea S1x07 Levi is mad as hell at Eve
Levi is mad as hell at Eve. Image courtesy NBC

Back at the survivor’s camp, Eve goes to pack up her things and leave. Levi comes in saying “I’m mad as hell at you right now…” Levi reiterates incorrectly (since we know that the VTOL crashes and everyone dies when it is found in the future) that he could have saved everyone.

Eve says she will go to the caves with Marybeth and return when things settle down.

Riley goes to talk with Josh but is rebuffed. Sam shows up to try and calm things down. No luck. Only when Scott arrives telling them that in 10,000 BC an ice age hit La Brea does the focus change with “The Storm” approaching.

Sam says “I don’t think we need to panic” when suddenly a huge flock of prehistoric vultures are observed fleeing for their lives.

Panic sounds good right about now folks!

La Brea S1x07 Lucas the lout rebuff his Mom

Marybeth goes to talk with Lucas asking him why he threw her “under the bus” when he should be thankful that she saved his life. As “The Storm” gathers force, a power pole that fell into the wormhole time portal cracks in half, trapping Lucas, who is knocked out, and Marybeth inside their makeshift shelter constructed from parts of a destroyed building.

This allows for not only some quality time between mother and son. The situation also motivates the survivors to pull together to save them. We learn that Lucas has claustrophobia.

Marybeth helps Lucas regain composure, returning him to his obstreperous self just as Marybeth is about to tell him about what happened with his father, which Lucas has lived in denial about.

Marybeth reveals that her husband was stealing drugs from the police department, got Lucas involved, and was going to use Lucas as patsy to cover up his illegal activities. As the truth is revealed, mother and son bond once again.

La Brea S1x07 Levi and Eve use an IED
Natalie Zea as Eve, Nicholas Gonzalez as Levi. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

Things are getting worse as “The Storm” hits the survivors camp full force.

Eve and Levi continue to try and dig a tunnel under the rubble to save Lucas and Marybeth while Lucas and Marybeth try, but fail to dig out from the inside.

Neither of their efforts are going well. The makeshift structure is teetering on the verge of collapse at any moment.

Instead, Sam and Levi, help Eve on the outside to make an improvised explosive device using Sam’s defibrillator power pack as the ignition source and gunpowder from Levi’s gun bullets as the explosive.

Together they are successful in blasting a hole in the fractured concrete that frees Lucas and Marybeth mere seconds before they would have been crushed to death!

La Brea S1x07 Josh and Riley fall in love
Josh and Riley fall in love. Image courtesy NBC

Riley and Josh take the Jeep to salvage some heavy duty tools from a semi truck trailer not far away. Eve and Marybeth aren’t going anywhere for the time being. Riley and Josh find the semi truck, but there are no tools inside it.

In a come to reality moment, Riley, in a nice way, tells Josh he is being juvenile and he should be respectful of his mother and that he is “stupid if he doesn’t see that”. Riley also tells Josh she is staying in the semi truck trailer which is filled with warm movie costume clothing until “The Storm” subsides.

Riley and Josh’s romantic attraction comes to fruition and they almost kiss, when suddenly Riley notices “The Storm” is beginning to pass and the moment is lost. However, it is clear that the two young people are falling in love!

La Brea S1x07 Gavin seeks answers to his past
Gavin seeks answers to his past. Image courtesy NBC

Back with Gavin in the present, he tells Izzy to get back to school and a normal routine as a distraction to get her mind off of Eve and Josh. Sophia returns as she a Gavin investigate the significance of November 16, 1988. As they leave to go to a church where his past history began, Gavin experiences another vision, this time with Diana in it. Gavin tells Sophia that something went wrong in prehistoric La Brea, but he is unsure of exactly what.

They leave to find out how they can get back to the past in La Brea. At the church, Gavin and Sophia meet Reverend Harmon (Fiona Stewart) who tells Gavin he was found with a girl about 12 years old, neither even remembered their names and that they were separated by the adoption agency.

Our theory at this point is that the girl is Gavin’s lost sister, both may have been in the past before, and somehow it is all connected to the wormhole time portal phenomena that she jumped back into last episode. Gavin then has another vision of Diana at her death. Sophia deduces this from Gavin’s body language. Both are saddened, but know they continue their quest for answers about the wormhole time portals.

La Brea S1x07 Paara decides to help Ty get back to the survivors camp

The scene switches to Paara and Ty in the shelter of the cave as “The Storm” subsides. Here Paara shares that the wormhole time portals open seemingly randomly, that Silas The Pelt Man (Mark Lee) was seen near Veronica’s abusive kidnapper at the time of his death. Ty shares asks Paara how long has she been trapped in prehistoric La Brea. “Forever” says Paara.

Ty shares that he had a wife, but they divorced and his wife refused to reconcile. Paara expresses sympathy as Ty further reveals that being stuck in the past has changed his outlook on life, making him want to live again, despite his cancer that will take his life in the near term.

Paara shares it is nice to meet someone from her future that she can relate to. This sets up our next romantic couple in La Brea. In the end, Paara helps Ty find his way back to the survivors camp

La Brea S1x07 Gavin and Sophia find the mysterious handprint

As the episode winds down, Gavin and Sophia seek the next clue with clues derived from the church where we learned that Gavin was found wandering along a road but became separated from the 12 year old girl when they were adopted by different parties.

Sophia, who has substantial governmental contacts, is able to access classified adoption records to track down the other person.

They find an antique shop with an unusual sculpture that is exactly like the same hand we have witnessed on Silas Pelt Man’s clothing, at the temple building at The Fort, and on the boulder Gavin had seen in his visions about prehistoric La Brea.

La Brea S1x07 Eve and Marybeth get to stay after another vote
Eve and Marybeth get to stay! Image courtesy NBC

The last scenes find us back at the survivor’s camp.  Riley and Josh have returned in the Jeep with a huge pile of warm clothes to share with everyone. Just as Eve and Marybeth are about to leave, Josh calls for a new vote for them to stay. Billy demands Marybeth surrender her weapon, which she does with Lucas’ encouragement, handing it over to Sam.

The vote is unanimous. Eve and Marybeth get to stay and YAY, it’s one big happy prehistoric La Brea family again!

Tune in next week when the eighth episode, appropriately named “Origins”, reveals more answers and likely more questions regarding where Rebecca is, Gavin’s  mysterious past, and it is all connected to the wormhole time portals that have ripped holes in the space time continuum!

In the meantime, we include a sneak peek of episode seven “Origins” below for your enjoyment!

The Team WHR grade for La Brea remains a Straight “A”. We would give the series an “A Plus” but for one reason; The writers and creators refer to the wormhole time portal as a “Sinkhole”. Sheesh, enough already with the “Sinkhole”!

We are therefore hopeful that when season two is approved, that the creators will refer to the phenomena that has sent dozens back to prehistoric La Brea in the Los Angeles for what it is: A WORMHOLE!

Ratings for the first five episodes have been strong. The fifth episode continued to demonstrate viewers enjoy La Brea, up 100,000 viewers to 5.1 million with a 0.6 ratings share in the very competitive United States viewing environment. With 6.2 million viewers for the Pilot episode, 4.9 million viewers for the second episode, 4.98 million for the third episode, and 5.0 million for the fourth episode, in our considered opinion, La Brea is set for a second season renewal if the ratings continue to remain this high.

As mentioned previously, the wormhole time portal that has remained open during the first five episode’s is about to close. In “The Way Home” the closure does occur as we learn much more about the failed Mojave Desert expedition from three years earlier. Viewers will also have their curious nature piqued when we learn about a cryptic date of November 16, 1988 mentioned at the end of the episode.

These findings are directly tied to Doctor Rebecca Aldridge (Ming-Zhu Hii) and Doctor Sophia Nathan (Virginie Laverdure) who will figure prominently in “The Way Home” story arc.

The reason that the wormhole time portal reality became manifest will soon be made clear. Additionally, in future episodes, we will discover why two former Mojave Desert Expedition members were found electrocuted. Hint: Have Rebecca and Sophia have been experimenting with time travel much longer than anyone, including the government realized?

    The Way Home:

La Brea S1x06 Eve looks to Gavin for answers
Eve looks to Gavin for answers. Image courtesy NBC

The episode was written by series creator David Appelbaum, opening with a flashback from three years earlier revealing the back story for two of the adult main characters in the Harris family, Eve (Natalie Zea) and Gavin (Eoin Macken).

Eve is preparing to leave Gavin stating that “you have not been sober for more than a week in the last three years, the kids deserve better, I deserve better”.

Gavin admits this saying “You’re right, tell me what I have to do, what do you need from me?”

Eve says “I need my husband back, I need the man I fell in love with, I need the person who always made me feel safe”.

Gavin tries to explain “I want that too Eve, if I could just figure out what these things I’m seeing and why, I could turn it around. You just have to trust me”.

La Brea S1x06 Josh questions his Mom about Gavin
Josh questions his Mom about Gavin

Sadly, it’s too late for Gavin. Eve closes the hatch on the car and goes to get their children. Gavin pleads with Eve saying that “I will find my way back to you”.

The flashback dissolves back to prehistoric time in La Brea where Eve is observed looking up at the wormhole time portal that is growing visibly smaller. Eve has a chat with Josh (Jack Martin) who says “everyone is freaking out” that the wormhole time portal is closing.

Eve comforts Josh that “we are not giving up, we are going to find a way home”. Eve also opens up to Josh that she wrote a letter to Gavin and buried it so Gavin will find it in the future. Eve also informs Josh that the things he has been seeing in the future are real, and that Gavin can see all of them in the prehistoric past.

Josh is justifiably doutbtful of Gavin intentions since he had always been told that his Dad was a crazy alcoholic suffering from hallucinations. Josh asks Eve “when is the last time he came through for us on anything?”

La Brea S1x06 Riley looks at the wormhole in the night sky
Veroncia St. Clair as Riley Velez. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

The scene switches to Scott (Rohan Mirchandaney) and Riley (Veronica St. Clair) who asks “what are you doing?”  as she looks up at the wormhole in the night sky. Scott replies that he is calculating how long before the wormhole time portal will close. Based literally on his rule of thumb, his finger nails actually, Scott estimates they have about 18 hours remaining.

This factor equates with what Rebecca calculated, five hours remaining in the present can only mean one of two things; the wormhole portal moves at different speeds in prehistoric time, and or that her calculation is based on how long the portal will be large enough to allow her experimental Vertical Take Off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft to fly through to prehistoric La Brea. Either way, there is likely not enough time for the VTOL to get to prehistoric La Brea and ferry all of the survivors back to the present time frame in Los Angeles.

However, one possible theory comes to mind; that another influence created the wormhole time portals in the past with electrical apparatus that must still be in working order in 10,000 BC. In the future episodes, we will likely learn that it must be Rebecca’s equipment. This has to be the key to not only this factor, but to the electrocution deaths that have occurred in the prehistoric past.

La Brea S1x06 Marybeth is more reasonable
Karina Logue as Marybeth Hayes. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

We are next with Sam (Jon Seda), Ty (Chiké Okonkwo), and Marybeth (Karina Logue). They are discussing the fact that Lilly (Chloe De Los Santos) was kidnapped by Veronica (Lily Santiago) and her now dead father, killed by prehistoric wolves, buried in the forest. As we observed in the last episode, Veronica ran away when the truth about Lilly and herself was discovered. There is more to learn about this non family story a bit later.

All agree that they must go get Veronica, but are concerned about the prospect that the Fort People may still be hostile and lurking. Interestingly, Marybeth has become more reasonable since it was revealed to the viewers that her son Lucas is a heroin dealer and possibly a drug addict as well.

Segue to Levi (Nicholas Gonzalez) who is using his solar powered emergency radio to try to make contact with any survivors of the disastrous Mojave expedition that left eight engineers and scientists stranded in the prehistoric past.

As we witnessed in the last episode, at least one was found in The Fort dead, and a woman appearing to be Diana who was leading The Fort people ordered Silas the Pelt Man to let them go. We learn in this episode that the woman who told Silas “Let them go” was a Diana lookalike named Paara (Tonantzin Carmelo) who we will see again in the future.

Levi makes contact on the radio with the real Sargent Diana Hoskins (Vanessa Buckley) asking for her help to repair his damaged VTOL aircraft.

Dianna wants to know where her partner Jonathan is, and why does Levi have his radio?

Levi informs Diana that her partner did not survive. Levi shares that he was sent to rescue not only the members of the Mojave expedition, but others as well who have became trapped in the prehistoric past by the La Brea wormhole time portal that opened recently.

As the radio connection begins to break up, Dianna tells Levi in that she at the Santa Monica coastline near an offshore rock formation just before radio communication is lost. Levi says he is going to find Diana.

Tony (Pacharo Mzembe), who has been repairing vehicles that fell through the wormhole portal, tells Levi that he has repaired the Jeep much to the satisfaction of Levi and Eve, who quickly volunteers to help rescue Diana.

    Good work Tony!

Josh tells his Mom to be careful. Scott advises them about best route, warning Levi and Eve they will be safe if they can avoid Saber-Toothed Tigers!

Levi and Eve arrive in prehistoric Santa Monica safely locating the offshore rock formations and a makeshift campsite replete with what appears to be wreckage of the Mojave Expedition VTOL aircraft. How they got to Santa Monica is a mystery at this point.

Diana appears displaying paranoid behavior holding Levi and Eve at gunpoint accusing them of killing her partner. Levi and Eve explain they found Jonathan at The Fort already dead.

La Brea S1x06 Diana aims her gun at Levi and Eve
Vanessa Buckley as Diana. Image by Sarah Enticknap, NBC

Levi shows Diana the photograph of the Mojave Expedition further explaining that Doctor Sophia Nathan gave it to him. Diana calms down, lowering her weapon apologizing saying “You spend enough time down here, you see everything as a threat”.

Diana shares that she got to Santa Monica after her crew left the Mojave looking for another way to escape but that they got caught in a storm, crashed on the Pacific Ocean beach that killed two of her crew as well as the pilot.

We learn that Diana’s partner saw Levi’s VTOL aircraft crash, went to go look for him, but never returned. As we know Jonathan was found dead at The Fort, somehow electrocuted in the past where there is not supposed to be electricity.

Diana has good news that the part Levi needs to repair his VTOL aircraft, a pneumatic compressor, is intact on her aircraft, and that she will be able to help Levi repair his.

Next we are back at the anthropological dig site with Gavin, Sophia, Izzy (Zyra Gorecki) and Rebecca just as they plan to use the enhanced VTOL aircraft to go back in time through the wormhole portal.

Fortunately, the archeological excavators have come in with an exciting discovery.

An item that appeared out of nowhere is in an area that they had already cleared has been found buried. Low and behold, what appears to be some good news; it is Levi’s VTOL aircraft confirmed by using ground penetrating radar.

The bad news is that the aircraft had crashed during takeoff and several bodies are among the new victims of this ever widening and changing tragedy.

La Brea S1x06 Agent Markman is ready to stop Gavin

Does this mean that some of our survivor heroes died in the past and Gavin will be allowed to save them before they are killed?

No luck for Gavin and Rebecca!

Senior Agent Adam Markman (Toby Truslove) shows up to put the entire escape rescue plan in doubt.

Gavin tells Markman and Izzy that there is still time to launch the rescue mission.

Markman, paranoid over another wormhole portal caused earthquake, has Gavin, Izzy and Rebecca arrested telling him “It’s over Gavin”.

    La Brea S1x06 Veronica prays

Back in good ole prehistoric La Brea, Ty is talking with Lilly the next morning who asks if Veronica has returned? Ty is sympathetic to Lilly which helps her open up further.

Lilly shares that when she was kidnapped, Veronica was nice to her. We learn that Veronica was also kidnapped by the now dead father who locked them both up every night.

This revelation points to the apparent facts that both girls were child abuse victims, which explains their odd frightening behavior. Their so called father was more than likely a deviate who kidnapped young girls and then sexually abused them. Lilly asks Ty to find Veronica.

Later, when Ty heads out to find Veronica, Eve orders him to return if he does not find Veronica within two hours. Fortunately, Ty is successful in locating Veronica, found praying at her so called father’s grave.

La Brea S1x06 Veronica attacks Ty

It becomes apparent that something vis wrong with Veronica, a much longer kidnap victim, who has tears streaming down her cheeks.

Veronica is likely suffering from Stockholm Syndrome whereby the victims often feel sympathy, or even fall in love with their evil abductors.

Ty subsequently is observed talking sincerely with Veronica about what is best for her life.

Ty seems to convince Veronica to return to the survivor’s camp. Instead Veronica attacks Ty with a large tree branch, knocking him out! Yikes Veronica, what in the heck are you doing!

Just then, Diana, Levi and Eve arrive back from Santa Monica with the salvaged pneumatic compressor. Diana, when asked how long she has been in the prehistoric past, says “1,123 days, give or take a few”. Diana also shares that once the wormhole time portal begins to close, it happens in less than twenty-four hours. Yikes!

La Brea S1x06 Josh stays behind
Jack Martin as Josh. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

Levi and Diana head off to repair Levi’s VTOL aircraft handing Eve his solar powered emergency radio, promising to stay in contact while Josh stays behind.

Evil Lucas (Josh McKenzie) immediately starts an argument accusing others of taking his place on the rescue flight. Anybody sick and tired of this guy Lucas yet? In the meantime, evil Lucas drags Scott away from the survivors camp to find the heroin. Along the way, we learn that Lucas and his murdered father were drug dealers together in the future. Scott and Lucas do not find the heroin. Instead, after digging three holes, they find a Civil War chest filled with gold bars. Finding millions in Confederate gold shuts up Lucas for the time being.

Viewers will recall that the survivors found what appeared to be Lucas’ father in a cave in a previous episode. This mystery remains unsolved at this point in the story arc.

Eve and Sam calm things down suggesting they conduct a lottery of names to determine who will be first to be evacuated. Lucas backs off. A lottery is conducted with both Josh and Lucas selected to be on the first flight which is doomed to crash!

La Brea S1x06 Levi, Josh and Eve find the drone sent by Sophia

Things look very bad for Izzy, Gavin and Rebecca who have all been arrested by Agent Markman.

Instead, Sophia shows up telling them she sent Markman on a wild goose chase to another supposed secret farm of Rebecca’s in Oregon.

Viewers will recall that Rebecca’s enhanced VTOL aircraft is actually in San Luis Obispo, California.

The four make good their escape  and head to launch their rescue mission, but only after Gavin demands that a message be sent to warn Levi not to take off in prehistoric La Brea.

A short time later a military drone comes through the wormhole time portal with a video recording from Gavin telling them that the VTOL aircraft will crash on takeoff killing everyone aboard.

    Nice work Sophia!

La Brea S1x06 Gavin sent a message to Eve

Gavin tells Eve that he received her letter in the future. Gavin also records that he has a rescue mission plan of his own and to trust him.

About the same time Eve and Marybeth chat and agree to not allow their son’s to die in the VTOL aircraft found crashed in the future. Both steal the Jeep so that none can get killed in the abortive takeoff. Eve and Marybeth arrive at the VTOL aircraft to learn that Levi and Diana say they have found the reason for the malfunction, and plan to take off in any event.

Marybeth pulls her gun to stop Levi and Diana forcing them to return to the survivors camp. Diana draws her own gun, but is shot by Marybeth. Diana fires but hits the VTOL aircraft fuel tank ensuring that no one will die in a takeoff attempt. Levi, Marybeth and Eve use the Jeep to rush Diana to Sam the doctor. Unfortunately, Diana passes away while Sam is trying to be save her life. Another Red Shirt victim in La Brea has become manifest.

La Brea S1x06 Gavin tells Markman to try and shoot him down

As the exciting episode winds down, Markman finds out that he has been duped. Nothing is found in Oregon and he is furious that a drone was launched to prehistoric La Brea without his approval.

Meanwhile, Gavin, Sophia,  and Rebecca, who have commandeered Rebecca’s helicopter, land at the still secret high tech San Luis Obispo farm. “I can have us in the air in 15 minutes” says Gavin.

Suddenly, Markman’s agents show up at the high tech San Luis Obispo farm.

Izzy and Sophia go outside as a diversion to buy time while Rebecca and Gavin take off in the enhanced VTOL aircraft.

Markman contacts the enhanced VTOL aircraft, threatening to shoot down Rebecca and Gavin with F-15 jet fighters.

Gavin says “I’m sorry Agent Markman, you are going to have to shoot us down”.

La Brea S1x06 Rebecca prepares to jump into the wormhole
Ming-Zhu Hii as Doctor Rebecca Aldridge. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

As the F-15’s lock on to the enhanced VTOL aircraft, Rebecca makes a stunning confession!

“I don’t have time to tell you everything, but I can tell you this. What’s been happening to you is for a reason. My destiny is down there, but yours is here… for now. There’s another way to save them. Go back to the beginning, November 16, 1988 and remember that date!”

With that, Rebecca dons a parachute and jumps into the wormhole time portal.

However, an overconfident Gavin still thinks he can outmaneuver the F-15 fighter jets. Beginning his own descent into the wormhole time portal in a futile attempt to save his family, Gavin faces certain death if he does not compromise with Agent Markman.

La Brea S1x06 A tearful Izzy begs her Dad to not risk being shot down

Quick segue back to Izzy, who is now in custody once again having been brought to the control room, no doubt to reason with her father by Agent Markman.

With visible tears in her eyes, Izzy begs her father not to try and evade the F-15’s stating “I can’t lose you too Dad”.

Gavin relents, heading back to his daughter where he is taken into custody.

Gavin asks Markman about what happened to the other VTOL aircraft found at the archeological dig site.

Markman, feeling sorry for Gavin, says “It disappeared. Looks like your wife got your message”.

La Brea S1x06 Eve as the wormhole closes

The last scene is of the wormhole time portal closing in prehistoric La Brea as Josh tells Eve:

“I told you Dad wasn’t going to come, now we’re stuck down here, because of you!”

As Eve once again looks to the sky for answers and for Gavin. We feel her pain knowing that something must have happened in the future that stopped her husband from fulfilling his promise to her and Josh.

    Questions that come to mind:

What did Rebecca mean “this time” and what happening to Gavin is for “a reason”?

Did Rebecca make it through to prehistoric La Brea before the wormhole time portal closed?

How many times, and how long has Rebecca been tampering with time travel with Gavin as a focal point?

Does Sophia, Rebecca’s partner in time, also know the answers to these questions, and what’s up with November 16, 1988?

Be certain to tune in to NBC in the United State and CTV in Canada next week to find out the answers to these and other questions!

In the meantime, we include a sneak peek of episode seven “The Storm” below for your enjoyment!

Welcome Back La Brea and Wormhole Time Travel Science Fiction Drama Lovers,

    La Brea poster
Click to visit La Brea. Image courtesy NBC Entertainment.

La Brea has proven to a runaway hit science fiction time travel wormhole based drama series. Ratings for the first four episode weeks have been very strong with 6.2 million viewers for the Pilot episode, 4.9 million viewers for the second episode, 4.98 million for the third episode, and 5.0 million for the fourth episode.

What is driving these high ratings? Drama! Click here to read all our analysis regarding La Brea to learn more.

The romances within the series are beginning to gel. At least one will come to fruition in “The Fort”, another will begin to bloom, and a third romantic relationship is revealed in this episode.  Also revealed is just how evil at least one of the characters really is. Additionally, we will discover that there are other humans that speak English in 10,000 BC!

The rescue mission by Levi Delgado (Nicholas Gonzalez) has not worked out as planned. Subsequent to his experimental aircraft being damaged after it was apparently disabled by the wormhole when he came through the time portal, Levi now joins the survivors in their quest to seek answers.

Worse, the wormhole time travel portal, which has remained open throughout the first four episode’s is about to close. This dire situation threatens to trap our survivors in 10,000 BC La Brea, perhaps forever!

On that point, many do not fully understand why the wormhole portal is referred to as a “sinkhole” by the contemporary media in the “series present time”. To science fiction time travel fans, the so-called sinkhole is obviously a wormhole, in fact a time travel portal to La Brea in the year 10,000 BC.

The only thing that seems to makes sense is the series creators are portraying the United States government in general, and the United States Air Force in specific, as taking part in a cover up of what is really going on so as to not cause a greater panic among residents in the greater Los Angeles area. This type of depiction within the story arc makes a great deal of sense. We learn in “The Fort” that other government mission(s) through the wormhole portal to the past have occurred. Notably, to the Mojave Desert about three years earlier.

La Brea S1x04 Gavin and Izzy meet Dr Aldridge and Sophia

This Mojave Desert expedition was a failure, trapping eight other engineers and scientists in the past. All of these factors are coupled with the revelation that the last attempt by Levi to travel to the past caused a large earthquake in the Los Angeles basin. This development has precluded any further official expeditions to 10,000 BC by the United States government.

Of interest is our new allies; Doctor Rebecca Aldridge (Ming-Zhu Hii) and Doctor Sophia Nathan (Virginie Laverdure) who we met near the end of the fourth episode, “The New Arrival” have teamed up to help rescue the survivor’s. In “The Fort” Rebecca and Sophia will disclose the reasons for their plans to Gavin (Eoin Macken) and Izzy (Zyra Gorecki) in an attempt to thwart the government conspiracy of information suppression in order to send a second rescue aircraft into the past.

Before beginning our review and analysis, it must be noted that the reason that the wormhole portal reality originally became manifest has still not been made clear.

It is strongly suspected by Team WHR that the entire La Brea disaster, costing an untold number of lives, may have been the result of the United States government experimenting with, in fact tampering with time travel for some reason. However, it must be noted that government in itself is not evil, only some of the people with power within it.

During “The Fort” episode it becomes apparent this has happened in more than one instance, leading to this terrible tragedy amid an inconceivable human suffering and loss of life.

This manifestation of government manipulation will no doubt become much clearer when we learn more about other the English speaking inhabitants living in 10,000 BC after “The Fort”.

    The Fort:

La Brea S1x05 Eve, Levi, Riley, Josh, Scott and Lucas enter The Fort
Josh McKenzie as Lucas Hayes, Rohan Mirchandaney as Scott Israni, Natalie Zea as Eve Harris, Nicholas Gonzalez as Levi Brooks, Veronica St. Clair as Riley Velez, Jack Martin as Josh Harris. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

“The Fort” was written by series creator David Appelbaum and directed by Greg McLean. The episode opens with Eve (Natalie Zea), Josh (Jack Martin), Riley (Veronica St. Clair), Scott (Rohan Mirchandaney), despicable drug dealer Lucas (Josh McKenzie), and Levi together on an exploratory expedition to visit “The Fort”.

Our band of explorers are witnessed entering “The Fort” to find out about the old man in pelts (Mark Lee) and why people have been found dead that appear to have been electrocuted.

Importantly, they want to see what kind of other people living in La Brea during 10,000 BC. Splitting up it three groups, not a wise thing in our opinion, are Scott and Lucas, Riley and Josh, and Eve and Levi.

Each group will encounter different aspects and inhabitants of “The Fort”, learning that there are different types of residents in “The Fort”.

Some are innocent and pose no threat, others exhibit a potential for death, and there are some who will ultimately save them from the old man wearing pelts!

La Brea S1x05 Lucas the drug dealing arsehole
Josh McKenzie as Lucas Hayes. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

Scott has become Lucas’ best buddy after Scott hid Lucas’ heroin stash worth $250,000 in the last episode, but made the mistake of admitting it to Lucas who has promised to kill Scott even if the heroin is returned intact. Poor Scott!

What we do not know is what the heck is Lucas going to do with the drug in 10,000 BC? Maybe Lucas is addicted to heroin? Only time will tell. But first both of them are captured and tied up by spear wielding men who speak English.

Scott is freed when Lucas uses a lighter to burn the ropes off of Scott, who almost gets up enough courage to leave Lucas there since he is tired of being Lucas’ “bitch”. Scott gives in only to be subjected to more abuse when evil Lucas tells him he is still going to kill him after he gets his heroin back anyway. Scott says “kill me now” and Lucas changes tact, congratulating Scott on “growing a pair” (of balls) before Lucas leers at Scott yet again. Lucas is a nightmare, the devil incarnate in any time period.

La Brea S1x05 Riley and Josh make some discoveries
Jack Martin as Josh Harris, Veroncia St. Clair as Riley Valez. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

Riley and Josh discover a couple of things themselves. First is a building with food that contains another exit from “The Fort”. Once they have used the gate, they are shocked to find out there is no way to get back in through the self locking exit gate. The second is their growing infatuation with each other, despite the difference in their ages “a life age apart” as Riley says.

Eve and Levi discover a religious temple where another dead body is found exhibiting the same symptoms as the body found in the forest outside the survivor’s camp in “The New Arrival”. Levi pulls out a photograph comparing it to the dead man.

Confessing there is “more to my mission Eve”, who is ticked off when Levi says it’s classified. We learn that Levi was sent back to not only rescue the survivor’s, but find the eight engineers and scientists that were part of the disastrous Mojave Desert wormhole mission three years earlier. The dead man is one of the eight, another Red Shirt.

Thank goodness we found more people in “The Fort” because the original survivor’s are being killed off fast!

La Brea S1x05 Eve and Levi express feelings for each other
Natalie Zea as Eve Harris, Nicholas Gonzalez as Levi Delgado. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

Levi does find a solar powered long range walkie-talkie which he believes will be useful later. Suddenly Eve looks at a fire pit that has hot embers saying “We have to get the hell out of here”.

Eve and Levi also explore their own feelings for each other. With Levi admitting he told Gavin about their relationship, things become more complicated. Eve is not happy with this development, feeling that it was her responsibility to inform Gavin, not Levi.

It is obvious that Eve has great guilt over what they have done, despite Levi telling Eve that Gavin “was not there for her”. Later we will learn more about Eve’s guilt and what she will do about it.

Meanwhile, back at the survivor’s encampment, Ty (Chiké Okonkwo) and Sam (Jon Seda) have found a full set of softball equipment in one of the vehicles that fell into the wormhole. Ty and Sam are concerned about Lilly (Chloe De Los Santos), believing that a bit of baseball will help her open up about why she is so scared all of the time. Even the bad cop Mary Beth (Karina Logue) agrees that something is wrong, and supports the efforts of Ty and Sam.

La Brea S1x02 Lilly is a kidnap victim
Chloe De Los Santos as Lilly Castillo a kidnap victim. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

Both Ty and Sam suspect that Veronica (Lily Santiago) is not telling the truth about their “family” story.

As we have witnessed, Veronica has near complete control over Lilly, and it does not appear to be a healthy family relationship.

Later, when Lilly is not under Veronica’s control, Lilly opens up to Ty and confesses that she was kidnapped by Veronica and her father (the first Red Shirt eaten by prehistoric wolves).

A so-called man of faith, Veronica’s father is not only a kidnapper, but may actually be a child abuser of poor helpless Lilly!

When Ty confronts Veronica about this, Veronica runs away into the forest and Lilly is safe for the first time in years.

Could Veronica become the next Red Shirt? Perhaps. We shall see.

La Brea S1x05 Eve and Levi find an observation tower
Nicholas Gonzalez as Levi Delgado, Natalie Zea as Eve Harris. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

At “The Fort” Eve and Levi find an observation tower that comes in handy to survey the entire surroundings.

Eve and Levi observe that somehow Riley and Josh are back outside of “The Fort”. Unfortunately, a gang of large tough looking men with swords and spears are observed tracking down Riley and Josh!

Then the fun,in fact the best, and most expected line in the series is yelled by Eve from the observation tower:

    “RUN!”

Riley and Josh hide in a crevice as the wild men close in. Fortunately they are saved by the sound of a horn blowing, recalling them all back to “The Fort” seconds before they are captured by the spear wielding hunters. Later Riley and Josh sneak back in to “The Fort” through the front gate by tricking the two guards with a song playing on Riley’s cell phone to find Eve, Levi, Scott and Lucas.

La Brea S1x05 Izzy and Gavin with Rebecca
Eoin Macken as Gavin Harris, Zyra Gorecki as Izzy Harris, Ming-Zhu Hii as Doctor Rebecca Aldridge. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

Back with Gavin and Izzy at the farm house which houses high tech facilities, Doctor Rebecca Aldridge and Doctor Sophia Nathan reveal that they were involved in the Mojave wormhole mission disaster. Doctor Aldridge reveals a personal motivation over and above her professional interest; that her fiancée, Diana Hoskins (Vanessa Buckley), was one of the scientists lost three years earlier, Moreover, Rebecca tells Gavin that she will be going with him back to 10,000 BC to help save everyone.

First, they must act quickly since Rebecca will disclose that the wormhole will close after being open five day. Today is the fifth day! Second, the only way to get access to the wormhole portal is by disabling the United States Air Force radar system or risk being shot down when they attempt to cross the wormhole portal event horizon.

Sophia, who has complete access to the government complex, says she will take care of that and heads back to ground zero. When Sophia is delayed by Senior Agent Adam Markman (Toby Truslove), Izzy becomes upset and tells Gavin that he should not go on the mission.

La Brea S1x05 Eve and Levi hide from The Fort spear men
Fort People. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

Segue to Eve and Levi. They run and hide in a hut building only to find four children of various ages, but none of them cry out nor reveal Eve and Levi when two men come into the hut looking for them.

The oldest of the children, a nice young lady and good actor by the way, says the old man in pelts is her grandfather who told her that “they fell from the sky” in English.

    Smart prehistoric kid!

We return to Rebecca who informs Izzy and Gavin that she has to show them something that will change their minds. Rebecca just happens to have a cool helicopter handy and the trio flies off to the ground zero archeological dig site that contains prehistoric artifacts from the survivors in La Brea 10,000 BC.

This factor will ultimately convince Izzy that Rebecca and Gavin will need to embark together on another expedition through the wormhole time portal using her enhanced experimental vertical take off and landing aircraft. The stakes become much higher with the portal wormhole only able to stay open back to our timeline for a few hours more!

La Brea S1x05 Dianna is the leader of The Fort
Diana is the leader of The Fort, not Silas. Image courtesy NBC

Back to the very smart prehistoric young man whose character name is not revealed yet, portrayed by an outstanding young actor named Diesel La Torraca. He appears to not like her Grandpa the Pelt Man and helps Eve and Levi escape. On the way to a secret doorway in the walls of “The Fort”, the six link up following the young man to the not so secret exit.

Four of them get away, but Eve and Levi are targeted by old Grandpa Pelt Man and his army of bowman with arrows aimed at both of them!

Out of nowhere, a woman who looks a lot like Diana named Paara (Tonantzin Carmelo) appears. She yells at Grandpa Pelt Man “Let them go Silas”, Finally! Grandpa Pelt Man (Mark Lee) has a name and low and behold, he not only understands English, he is not the leader of “The Fort” either. Paara is!

La Brea S1x05 Eve and Levi comes to terms about their relationship
Nicholas Gonzalez as Levi, Natalie Zea as Eve. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

Near the end of an excellent episode, Levi and Eve decide to finally come to terms with where their relationship has been and where it is going after leaving “The Fort” .

This is a fulfilling moment for the viewers as well since the love triangle issue of Gavin, Eve and Levi needed to be addressed in a wholesome and fulfilling manner.

Levi, in a tender moment, admits to Eve that Gavin knows that he (Levi) loves her. Viewers will recall that Levi and Gavin met before Levi left to come to prehistoric La Brea and they handled it like respectable human beings.

This seems to sit well with Eve, and it does sit well with this reviewer too.

However, Eve knows that she has one more task to complete to address the guilt that has been plaguing her about her relationship with Gavin the very beginning of the La Brea saga. Eve sets off to accomplish this task even though she and her husband are separated by 12,000 years.

La Brea S1x05 Izzy and Gavin read the letter from Eve
Zyra Gorecki as Izzy, Eoin Macken as Gavin. Image by Sarah Enticknap, NBC

The last scenes are of Gavin, Izzy and Rebecca at the archeological dig site. Rebecca shows Gavin a letter from Eve that was found inside a glass bottle where we learn that glass “can last a million years”.

In the letter, reconstructed by Rebecca and her team, Eve confesses to Gavin that she was wrong to have not believed him about his visions.

The scene switches to Eve writing the letter and sealing it in the glass bottle 12,000 years ago. Reading the letter, Gavin and Izzy find out it is addressed to both of them, motivating them even more just as Rebecca had hoped that it would.

Although Rebecca admits they may not make it back to the present, Izzy will acquiesce as to what is about to happen since the wormhole is about to close. Izzy says that she will be safe with Aunt Jessica (Ione Skye) happy that Dad is going to 10,000 BC with Rebecca to save Mom.

Izzy has the last line, ending the episode saying “Go save them!”

We hope you enjoyed our review and analysis of “The Fort”. We include a sneak peek of what is coming up next in the sixth episode of La Brea, “The Way Home”.

As we have mentioned previously, this series appears to be a hit, demonstrating strong ratings for the Pilot episode at 6.2 million viewers in the United States with a .59 rating share and 4.9 million viewers with a .60 ratings share in the United States for the second episode, slightly higher for the third episode at 4.98 million viewers, and up to 5.0 million viewers dropping one tenth to a .50 share for “The New Arrival” episode.

La Brea is broadcast on CTV in Canada and has now been reported to have done well. Canada ratings are currently only available between September 27, 2021 up to October 10, 2021. The La Brea series is demonstrating strong numbers in Canada at 1.232 million viewers for the Pilot episode as the 16th most popular program, and 1.0 million viewers as the 28th most popular program for the second episode.

However, La Brea was number one in it’s time slot in Canada for both weeks reported so far. This is quite good for a country with a population of thirty-eight million compare with 332 million potential viewers in the United States! Ratings share, unlike the United States, is not reported in Canada so far as we can ascertain.

Notes: The Canadian television rating system appears to only track the top thirty programs each week. If a series drops below 30th in the rankings, Canadian ratings may not be available for that particular series.

While watching this episode and noting that there was another guy who kicked the bucket, bit the dust, and became another red shirt, it occurred to me that, at this rate, there will need to be more arrivals or they will quickly run out of survivors.

Well, what do you know? Another guy drops in, literally!

We welcome Levi Delgado (Nicholas Gonzalez) an old buddy of Gavin Harris (Eoin Macken). Nicolas also just happens to be Eve Harris’ (Natalie Zea) lover and the third part of a love triangle that is sure to create more drama in this already very dramatic show.

Even more fun, or not so much fun, depending on your point of view, all three know about the love triangle.

The only ones who don’t, it seems, are Josh (Jack Martin) and Izzy (Zyra Gorecki).

    Or do they?

Sometimes children know more about what is going on than the parents. We will see.

The La Brea science fiction drama series is produced by NBC Television and Keshet Studios (click to learn about Keshet). Created by David Appelbaum who is the executive producer of the series along with talented industry veterans that we admire for their past accomplishments. This includes Steven Lilien, Avi Nir, Ken Woodruff and Bryan Wynbrandt.

For your enjoyment, we include a link our last La Brea review analysis, and a fun video courtesy of NBC about prehistoric life that we tweeted last night!

    The New Arrival:

The episode, directed by Thor Freudenthal, opens with Josh and Scott (Rohan Mirchandaney) looking up at the stars. Scott tells Josh that since planet Mars won’t be named for another 10,000 years, they could call it Planet Josh.

Josh seems to think that is a pretty lame idea from the expression on his face.

The chat then turns to the fact that Scott has hidden the leftover heroin found in the trunk of a car from an earlier episode, out in the woods somewhere.

He reasons that the owner of the drugs is either dead or didn’t make it through the portal.

    Except, Scott, he did.

La Brea S1x04 Lucas is mad at Mary Beth who calls his bluff

Speaking of which, Lucas (Josh McKenzie) is annoyed at his mom, bad cop Marybeth Hayes (Karina Logue) whom, he is sure, has taken his stash of heroin when he looks in the trunk of the car only to find it gone!

I wonder, since he can’t really sell the drugs to anyone in their camp, why is Lucas so concerned about getting them back?

Eve and Doctor Sam (Jon Seda) are having a friendly chat about family when something weird happens to the wormhole portal. Since nothing has come through the wormhole since their arrival in the past, the phenomenon is completely new to them. Everyone looks up and watches as an unknown burning object comes through the portal and crashes nearby.

La Brea S1x04 Levi comes through the wormhole

Obviously, whoever it is may have survived the crash, so a group of people is quickly assembled to check it out.

Eve and Josh quickly volunteer. Sam’s daughter (Veronica St. Clair), who has medical knowledge, is volunteered to go with her father.

Lucas and Scott round out the search party.

Before they leave, Lucas goes to his car to get a gun.

Scott sees him and now realizes that the bad guy who owns the drugs did make it through the portal. Poor Scott. His day just took a turn for the worse.

It doesn’t take long for the search group to reach the general area of the downed aircraft where Levi has parachuted into the trees as seen in the previous episode.

They hear a growling sounds nearby and shots soon seeing Levi stumble out of the trees.

Levi explains that he was shooting at a Saber-Toothed Tiger in self defense and that he has been sent to rescue everybody and bring them all home.

Eve’s first question to Levi is; “Is Izzy okay?”

    Of course, she is, mom.

    So is your hubby Eve.

That doesn’t seem to be a priority for Eve, giving us an idea of Eve’s feelings for Gavin.

Riley wants to know if everyone’s families know that they are still alive.

Since Levi has pointed out that the portal is a big secret, their families don’t know the truth. This disappoints everyone.

Levi needs to find his plane as soon as possible. He tells them that if it’s still in one piece, they may yet be able to go home, providing the survivors with a glimmer of hope.

My next thought was, what about the parachute? It could be useful. Is someone going to get it?

Since this isn’t explained, next up, they head for the plane.

Gavin and Izzy experience an earthquake. This leads them to Dr. Sophia Nathan’s office (Virginie Laverdure). Gavin notices his own personnel file on her desk so has a look through it.

Gavin discovers that there have been four wormhole portal like events before the La Brea event.

Senior Agent Adam Markman (Toby Truslove) enters and informs him that Sophia has taken a personal day. Markman also explains that Levi’s entry into the portal is what caused the earthquake, so there will not be any more attempts to go through at the present time.

Gavin, not liking this news, tells Markman that he knows Levi is alive. His visions told him so.

Still not getting a reversal of the decision, Gavin, Jessica (Ione Skye) and Izzy are off to find Sophia to find out what else is going on.

La Brea S1x04 Veronica and Lily are the strange sisters

The two peculiar sisters, Veronica Castillo (Lily Santiago) and Lilly Castillo (Chloe De Los Santos) are once again keeping to themselves.

Are these young women victims or future baddies?

Veronica wants to maintain their father’s system while Lilly likes spending time with the other survivors.

Veronica’s religious ideals do not win out as she slaps Lilly, who runs off and falls over the body of the latest person to die in this series, another Red Shirt who looks hideous!

Lilly’s scream alerts the others and everyone rushes to see what is going on.

Sam takes charge and states that he will try to find out what the man died of.

Marybeth states that this area is now a crime scene and will be investigated. Ty (Chiké Okonkwo) and Marybeth look around the area for evidence. It turns out that Ty is a psychiatrist.

Marybeth asks him to see if he can get any information out of Lilly as to what may have happened. No problem.

Will Veronica let him? This may be a problem.

Our intrepid heroes find the plane.

Levi heads inside and starts pressing buttons.

No luck. The plane is not going to fly again.

He does have a nice surprise for them, however – several cases of MREs – Ready To Eat meals. Yum.

As they prepare to leave for the camp, Levi remembers something. He climbs back into the plane to get – Eve’s 10,000-year-old ring.

As he slides it into a pocket, he notices that the plane’s radar is picking up a signal about 5 miles away. That’s about 8 kilometers to Canadians and every other country.

    La Brea S1x04 Heading back
Natalie Zea as Eve Harris, Jack Martin as Josh Harris, Josh McKenzie as Lucas Hayes, Veroncia St. Clair as Riley Velez. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

It is decided that they will stay where they are and head out to the position of the signal in the morning. As they all sit around a campfire enjoying the MREs, they talk about Riley’s great medical abilities, she explains how she used the heroin to drain her father’s spine and how Scott had hidden the heroin in the woods.

This piques Lucas’ interest. Scott now has a really big problem.

Veronica and Lilly continue to keep to themselves despite Sam’s request that everyone stay close for safety. Ty attempts to get Lilly to share what she saw when she fell over the body of the man. Veronica is grudgingly allowing Ty to ask her sister questions but has made it clear that if Lilly seems the least bit uncomfortable, the questioning will end.

This is rich since Veronica didn’t seem to care about Lilly’s discomfort when she slapped her sister. Naturally. Veronica finds the excuse she is looking for when Lilly’s expression seems to imply her discomfort.

As she is dragged away, Lilly blurts out that it was an old man with the image of a hand on his back. What is with that hand, anyway?

La Brea S1x04 Eve and Levi have a chat
Eve and Levi have a chat. Image courtesy NBC

Eve and Levi have a chance to chat. Eve explains that she missed Levi and is glad to see him. However, Levi tells her that Gavin’s visions are real and that he has been doing his best to prove himself to her. He also tells her that, “Gavin knows about us.” He gives her the ring back.

Eve is confused because she lost it, “down here”. Levi tells her that Gavin, “dug it up”. This love triangle is getting a bit twisted. I’m not sure who to feel sorry for.

Maybe Gavin will fly down to Eve like a white knight, accompanied by his own sidekick daughter to save the day. I wondered how she would end up in the wilds of 10,000 years ago. That may be the way.

La Brea S1x04 Gavin and Izzy meet Dr Aldridge and Sophia

Gavin and Izzy have arrived at their next destination, a nice looking farm with a quaint farm house located in the city of San Luis Obispo, California.

As they approach the house a woman neither of them has met steps outside and says, “Gavin”.

Gavin, of course, is startled and wants to know how she knows his name.

Sophia steps outside and tells him that she told the other lady, a Dr. Rebecca Aldridge (Ming-Zhu Hii), all about him and his abilities to see into the prehistoric past.

La Brea S1x04 Dr Aldridge enhanced aircraft

Gavin tells her about finding his personnel file and about the other sinkholes.

“The other sinkholes are closed,” Sophia responds, “but I have another way”.

She takes them to a hangar with a duplicate plane to the plane that Levi flew through the portal.

This one has modifications, we are told, to avoid causing earthquakes and be able to to get to prehistoric La Brea safely. That’s a bunch of cool features.

Bonus points? Gavin gets to be the new pilot!

La Brea S1x04 The mysterious old man
The mysterious old man. Image courtesy NBC

As Lucas and Scott and the rest of the group walk toward the radar signal that Levi spotted, Lucas tells Scott that Scott is his new best friend. “You know where my drugs are, but if you don’t give them back to me, when we get back, I will kill you.”

Poor Scott. Now, he’s the one I feel sorry for. Since he is also timid, he may just be the last one standing. He has very strong survival instincts.

The group eventually comes across a walled village with several single-family huts scattered about. Above the gate in the wall is that same image of the hand.

And the mysterious old man (Mark Lee) is watching them!

    There are a few questions that need to be answered and likely will be in upcoming episodes, such as;

Who is the old man in the animal skins?

Are the people in the village going to be friendly or aggressive?

Are the people in the village also survivors who fell through a different wormhole portal?

Who among the survivors will be the next to die? I don’t like Lucas or Veronica, so either of them can be the next red shirt. What do you think?

Included below is a sneak peek of episode five “The Fort”. See you next week for La Brea when more answers will be revealed!

Welcome Back La Brea Science Fiction Time Travel Drama Lovers!

La Brea has proven to be an exciting new science fiction time travel wormhole based drama series. Ratings for the first two weeks have been strong with 6.2 million viewers for the Pilot episode with a .59 share and 4.9 million viewers with a .60 share for the second episode “Day Two”.

What we have learned so far is that it all began when a wormhole tore open a hole in time near the famous La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles. The actors are believable with Natalie Zea as Eve Harris, Eoin Macken as Gavin Harris, Jon Seda as Doctor Sam Velez, Chiké Okonkwo as Ty Coleman, Karina Logue as Marybeth Hays, Zyra Gorecki as Izzy Harris, Jack Martin as Josh Harris, Veronica St. Clair as Riley Velez, and Rohan Mirchandaney  as Scott Israni, with supporting actors that include Stephen Lopez as Billy Fisher, Pacharo Mzembe as Tony Greene, Chloe De Los Santos as Lilly Castillo, Josh McKenzie as Lucas Hayes, Nicholas Gonzalez as Levi Delgado, Virginie Laverdure as Dr. Sophia Nathan, and Ione Skye  as Jessica Harris.

All are struggling to survive in their new reality, both those trapped in prehistoric time in the Los Angeles basin and those trying to rescue them in contemporary times.

The wormhole, which has remained open throughout the first three episode’s, has found our survivors, heroes and villains alike, dealing with huge snarling Smilodon or Saber-Toothed Tiger’s and vicious wolves that have claimed the lives of one person and severely injured two others.

In each case, the wild beasts have simply been looking for lunch or dinner per their natural instincts. Can anyone honestly blame the critters for doing what comes to them naturally?

La Brea S1x02 prehistoric human ritual
Ancient ritual stones. Image courtesy NBC

Of interest is the discovery of wild animal traps and ancient stone ritual monuments obviously built by prehistoric human beings in the Los Angeles area near Beverly Hill many millennia 0,000 ago.

The reason that the wormhole reality bridges that have materialized has not been made clear. However, one of the persons in contemporary times, a former air force pilot has been seeing hallucinations of his family in the past has become of great interest to the United States military while he deals with an unsettling discovery about his family.

At the end of the “Day Two” episode, the government decides to send a military expedition through the wormhole to investigate the phenomena from the other side. Unfortunately, unintended consequences will become manifest!

For your enjoyment, before beginning our review and analysis of “The Hunt”, we include some fun La Brea cast moments while they are off set courtesy of the great team at NBC.

    The Hunt:

La Brea S1x02 Josh is saved
Natalie Zea as Eve Harris, Jack Martin as Josh Harris, Veroncia St. Clair as Riley Valez. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

“The Hunt” episode was written by Jose Molina and directed by Adam Davidson. It opens with Eve, Josh, Riley and Dr. Velez together in one of the larger vehicles setup as a medical triage area to care for the injured time travelers Josh and Dr. Sam Velez.

Back at the El Segundo Air Force Base Gavin is being told some news he does not want to hear. More on that later.

It is apparent that Riley is not happy with Eve for leaving her father injured in the wild because Eve chose to bring much needed medical supplies to treat her son Josh.

We observe that Josh, thanks to the medical advice from Sam, is doing much better. Josh’s fever from the infection caused by being bitten by wild wolves has broken and is now strong enough to walk on his own again.

Although Sam was ultimately saved, young Riley is holding a grudge, but admits she would have probably done the same thing if the situation had been reversed. Eve offers to bring Riley some found in an attempt to break the tension. Riley says “I will not stop you”,  making an empty belly a good attitude adjuster for young Riley!

La Brea S1x03 Sam regains consciousness
Jon Seda as Dr. Samuel Valez. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

Hopefully, since Sam regains consciousness later in “The Hunt”, Riley will set aside her grudge after she learns that it was Sam who actually told Eve to head back to the survivor’s camp with the medical supplies for Josh?

It could also be as many viewers suspect that Josh and Riley will grow closer, ending up in a romantic relationship that will help ease the conflict that exists between Eve and Riley.

    We shall see.

Only time (pun intended) will tell.

More on the romance factor later in our review of “The Hunt”.

La Brea S1x03 Eve and Josh get ready for The Hunt

Eve and Josh head outside to the food line setup by the traffic cop who was the first person to fall into the wormhole sinkhole witnessed in the Pilot episode.

We are happy that the traffic cop survived, answering a question posed in the second episode as to exactly what had happened to her. Click here to read our analysis review of the Day Two episode.

Mary Beth, the crooked cop and known protein bar thief, is bitching as usual because that the traffic cop has demonstrated leadership by rationing the food. Leadership is something Mary Beth obviously lacks. All the food and water that is available has been placed on a blue tarp after being collected from local stores, warehouses, and vehicles in the vicinity of the survivor’s camp. After three weeks, it is obvious that there really is not very much food left.

La Brea S1x03 Josh taunts Mary Beth
Josh taunts Mary Beth. Image courtesy NBC

Josh taunts Mary Beth face to face with “What’s the matter, don’t you have some protein bars hidden somewhere?”. Go Josh!

Eve tells Mary Beth to go enjoy her food elsewhere, to which Mary Beth sarcastically retorts “In a couple of days, I’m sure we are going to become good friends”.

Let’s be honest; Mary Beth, whether in prehistoric times, or in the present day, is without a doubt, one utterly detestable human being!

Perhaps Mary Beth will become the next Red Shirt? We can only hope so!

La Brea S1x03 Giant ground sloth
A giant ground sloth appears. Image courtesy NBC

Back in the food line, a scraggly looking man who says he has been on a “juice cleansing” for a month and attempts to steal a Baby Ruth candy bar. Scraggly is stopped in the act by Josh and Lucas. Scraggly gives back the Baby Ruth contemptuously just as a new threat appears out of the brush, a giant ground sloth!

The giant ground sloth lumbers into camp and scarf’s down all the remaining food as the survivor’s scramble for their lives. Scott Israni ends the prologue with the quip to Scraggly “I guess no one is getting a Baby Ruth now”!

We segue to the El Segundo Air Force Base where Gavin is watching preparations for an experimental aircraft after an earlier attempt to send a drone to enter the wormhole sinkhole fails The drone lost contact at the event horizon when trying to reach prehistoric times on the other side of the wormhole sinkhole.

La Brea S1x03 Gavin leaves the hanger
Eoin Macken as Gavin Harris. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

Gavin is observed leaving the hanger after chatting with Dr. Sophia Nathan about his desire to volunteer as the pilot for the rescue mission has been rejected. We have learned that Gavin is one of the best experimental Air Force aircraft pilots in his past life.

Sophia reminds Gavin that he is no longer in the Air Force, and therefore he cannot fly the mission. Sophia comforts Gavin with the fact that he will play a critical role in the mission by delineating the maps the Air Force has prepared regarding Los Angeles in the prehistoric past.

Sophia informs Gavin that an extensive series of planned missions to rescue the survivor’s will be executed until all those trapped in the prehistoric past have been saved.

Not be deterred, Gavin suggests that his former colleague, Levi Delgado, would be the next best choice.

Sophia agrees with Gavin’s assessment stating “He’s on the list”.

La Brea S1x03 Eve heads off to hunt rabbits after telling the truth to the survivors
Eve tells the truth to the survivors. Image courtesy NBC

Back to the survivor’s subsequent to the giant ground sloth snacking on the their food, everyone wonders how it got there? Scott, our resident anthropologist from the La Brea Tar Pits Museum informs them the creature is extinct, and further narrows the timeline to 12,000 years ago or 10,000 B.C which is when the ground sloth became extinct. Everyone is dumbfounded.

Eve shares that she saw a Saber-Toothed Tiger in the forest and points to the mountains which are identical to the Hollywood Hills, informing everyone that they are in Los Angeles, but in the distant past. Eve confirms these facts, and that like it or not, “We all fell through that light” (wormhole) and have become time travelers!

With their food eaten by the giant ground sloth, Eve makes another declaration “We need to hunt”. Lucas Hayes says he is leaving to find someone who knows where they really are. Eve and Ty head out to hunt. Lucas with his bad attitude could become the next Red Shirt? Not just yet!

La Brea S1x03 Levi Delgado flashes back
Nicholas Gonzalez as Levi Delgado. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

Next we are with Levi Delgado who is coming in for a landing at the El Segundo Air Force Base. A flashback occurs with Levi visiting the Harris family shortly after Izzy’s leg injury.

We learn that Gavin and Levi are best pals and that Izzy refers to him as “Uncle Levi” in addition to Levi warning Gavin to seek help about his hallucinations or he stands to lose his family.

Gavin admits that the hallucination visions in his head “have taken everything me”, nevertheless wishing Levi good luck on his next assignment in Germany. The flashback fades as Gavin and Levi meet in the present in the hanger where Levi says that he is “trying to wrap his around it” now that Gavin’s hallucinations have proven to be true and correct.

Sophia meets them and says “Let’s get to it”.

Later aboard the aircraft, Levi admits to Gavin that he had an affair with Eve, which is why he went to Germany. Gavin says that is in the  past, and the only thing that is important is the mission and to save his family. Levi swears an oath to Gavin.

La Brea S1x03 Eve, Ty, Lucas and Mary Beth trapped in a cave
Karina Logue as Marybeth Hayes, Josh McKenzie as Lucas Hayes, Chiké Okonkwo as Ty Coleman, Natalie Zea as Eve Harris. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

Back in the prehistoric past, Eve is making animal traps when Ty joins her. We learn that Eve grew up on a farm and she learned trapping because her Dad, who wanted her to be a boy, taught her about hunting for wild game.

When trying to find out about Ty, he deflects, telling Eve if they are going to catch any rabbits, they had “better be quiet”.

Later Ty and Eve are successful in trapping rabbits for food but a giant bear shows up before they can get back to camp. Using the rabbit to distract the bear, Eve and Ty run away ultimately becoming trapped in a cave.

The next scene finds us with Mary Beth walking in the woods. She has followed her son Lucas into the woods asking what he is doing there? Lucas answers by throwing a log on the ground that trips a snare revealing a Saber-Toothed Tiger trap with sharp pointed wooden spears. Lucas let’s his Mom know that he found it yesterday with a tiger in it, but today, the dead tiger was gone and the trap had been reset by someone. Both set out to find whoever built the tiger trap, instead going another way, find Eve and Ty in the cave.

La Brea S1x03 Riley saves her father
Veroncia St. Clair as Riley Valez, Jack Martin as Josh Harris, Rohan Mirchandaney as Scott Israni, Jon Seda as Dr. Samuel Valez. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

Back at the triage bus, Sam has regained consciousness but his legs are paralyzed by fluid swelling that is pinching his nerves in his back.

Sam tells Riley she must perform a procedure or he may never be able to use his legs again.

Riley, a medical school dropout is terrified but has no choice if her Dad is ever going to walk again.

Scott and Josh know where a car is located whose trunk is loaded with heroin that will be used to relieve Sam’s pain during the operation.

Riley is panicked when Sam passes out from the heroin, but Josh encourages her to complete the procedure. Riley looks lovingly towards Josh for his help during this difficult time.

Ultimately Riley saves Sam from being paralyzed for life. Great job Riley!

La Brea S1x03 A startling discovery
Josh McKenzie as Lucas Hayes, Karina Logue as Marybeth Hayes, Natalie Zea as Eve Harris. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

The episode winds down with a startling discovery by Eve, Ty, Lucas and Mary Beth. A dried out corpse is found wearing a sweatshirt from contemporary times!

The corpse has been there for many years, meaning that the corpse never found a way back home.

On the way back to the camp, our four cave dwellers find a stash of wild edible mushrooms that will feed all of them for the foreseeable future. Prompted by Lucas, they all agree not to tell anybody about finding the corpse in the cave.

Meanwhile Lucas confronts his Mom about “pulling the trigger” on the corpse. This means that Mary Beth knew about the wormhole and had somehow pushed the victim into it to hide her crime some time before the current cataclysm had ever occurred. More on this enigma will hopefully be revealed in future episodes.

Next Ty confesses that he has a brain tumor and will not survive over the long term in the prehistoric past. Ty plans to use his gun to end it all when the time comes. However, he asks Eve to take the gun and put Ty out of his misery. Eve confesses her own guilt that she was having an affair and is ashamed about it.

The final sequences in “The Hunt” depicts Levi taking off from the El Segundo Air Force Base in the experimental aircraft. While Levi is  descending into the wormhole sinkhole in modern times, everyone is hoping the mission is a success.

Gavin is in the control room.

Izzy is in the waiting room.

The tension is so thick you could not even cut it with a knife!

Suddenly, as the aircraft approaches the wormhole event horizon, the aircraft computer controls are lost. Levi tries in vain to fly it manually as contact with the control room is severed. An unmitigated disaster for all involved.

La Brea S1x03 Levi is the new arrival
Levi the new arrival. Image courtesy NBC

The scene fades to Eve where we witness her looking skyward hopefully.

Gavin leaves the control room and finds Izzy to give her a much needed hug.

The last shot before we fade to black is of Levi who, thank goodness, was able to bail out of the experimental aircraft.

We then see Levi in his parachute. He is alright, hanging from a tree. Be certain to tune in next week as the final scene sets up the fourth exciting episode called “The New Arrival”.

After our review and analysis of “The Hunt”, we include a sneak peek  of what is coming up next in season one of La Brea.

Imagine it. You are sitting in traffic in Los Angeles near the La Brea Tar Pits, waiting for your day to get started. The City of Angels is home to Hollywood – the place where dreams are made. Not today!

Today is more like Alice in Wonderland, or Alice down the rabbit hole. But this is no rabbit hole and you are not Alice. You find yourself in another world surrounded by other hapless survivors. There is not much left of the vehicles and buildings that have also fallen into the wormhole pit to the past.

Humans always seem to leave litter everywhere we go, don’t we?

As a survivor, what is your next move? If you have watched any reality shows, you know you have to find food, water, and shelter first, then look for allies. You don’t want to get voted off the island, er, the community of survivors. You might also want to find out who the people most likely to survive are and make friends with them.

And, stay away from the Red Shirts!

As we mentioned in our analysis of the pilot episode of La Brea, this series appears to be on the way to be a hit demonstrating strong ratings for the Pilot episode at 6.2 million viewers in the United States with a .59 rating share and 4.9 million viewers with a .60 ratings share in the United States for the second episode. La Brea is broadcast on CTV in Canada and is reported to have done well, however Canada ratings for La Brea are not available.

Eve (Natalie Zea), Sam (Jon Seda), and Ty (Chike Okonkwo), while hiding from the Smilodon Saber-Tooth cat’s mate, decide that they must be in the past. Moments later, separated from Sam, they discover an animal trap. There must be other intelligent life here.

The question Is are they friendly or another dangerous problem?

Flashback to Gavin’s (Eoin Macken) visions and where they started – visions that caused him to crash his plane. We discover that he is a pilot. This will come in handy later on. Gavin knows that his wife and son are still alive in the wormhole pit because of the visions that he has been experiencing.

La Brea S1x02 Sam is saved

Eve and Ty realize that Sam, who has fallen down a ravine, has the medical supplies that Eve’s son, Josh (Jack Martin), desperately needs.

That shouldn’t be the only reason they go after him, but it lends greater desperation to the scene. Josh is in real trouble without Sam’s medical knowledge.

Fortunately, Sam is saved later in the episode by Lucas and Ty.

Enter a new character, Dr. Shen (James Huang). Izzy (Zyra Gorecki) and Gavin see him interviewed on television. he is the guy they need to talk to. Gavin presses him to carbon date Eve’s ring. Doubtfully, he agrees.

La Brea S1x02 Marybeth chats with Lucas
Karina Logue as Marybeth Hayes, Josh McKenzie as Lucas Hayes. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

The evil Cop from the last episode, we discover, is called Marybeth (Karina Logue). She is looking for someone who is responsible for some drugs found in a vehicle from last week’s episode.

It turns out they are related, Marybeth the crooked cop is Lucas’s mom.

Eve and Ty find Sam badly injured. The noble doctor insists they leave him but Eve will not do that. Struggling with him for a while Eve eventually relents and runs to the survivor community to assist her son. This gives Sam an opportunity to realize that Ty has some kind of disease.

Veronica Castillo (Lily Santiago) finds Scott (Rohan Mirchandaney) with a shovel. She insists that she needs to find and bury her father who was killed and dragged off into the bush by a wolf in the last episode. Scott, who has expertise in ancient animals and the La Brea Tar Pits obliges. He discovers something startling about their predicament. They come across the dead body of Veronica’s father.

La Brea S1x02 Gavin and Izzy go see the military
Eoin Macken as Gavin Harris, Zyra Gorecki as Izzy Harris. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

We also learn that Veronica and her younger sister, Lilly (Chloe De Los Santos) are not the straightforward normal sisters that they appear to be. What they are hiding remains to be explored in future episodes.

Gavin goes with Izzy to the military where he is volunteered to appear before Dr. Sophie Nathan (Virginie Laverdure) and Senior Agent Adam Markman (Toby Truslove), the government people in charge of the investigation involving the massive sinkhole.

The military knows about the ring and have it carbon-dated to 10,000 B.C. Gavin learns that La Brea is not the first such hole. there is one in the Mohave Desert. He is being recruited for an expedition down the rabbit hole, er, wormhole pit.

Is it time to call him Alice (in Wonderland) yet?

La Brea S1x02 Josh is saved
Natalie Zea as Eve Harris, Jack Martin as Josh Harris, Veroncia St. Clair as Riley Valez. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

After helps keep Josh alive by Riley until he is saved with the medical supplies brought by Eve, I am left wondering if the survivors will investigate the ruins of the buildings that have landed in their new world?

It would make sense to eliminate all possibilities of food that may be available to them.

So, with that in mind, did a food market fall into the wormhole? If not, maybe a convenience store? Maybe there would be nothing left, but it is better to find out.

Also, what about people that may have been trapped in the rubble?

Lastly, what happened to that Traffic Cop; the lady who was first to fall into the wormhole?

Will these, and other questions be answered in the next episode?

    Tune in and find out!

In the meantime, we include a sneak peak of next weeks episode, “The Hunt”, for your enjoyment!

Here at WormholeRiders we always enjoy wormhole time travel drama series!

La Brea promises to be just such a series in an exciting new science fiction drama series, that premiered tonight,  Tuesday September 28, 2021 on NBC Television in the United States and CTV in Canada.

The series premise is a good one with a sinkhole wormhole gateway to a prehistoric time after it tears open a hole in time near the famous La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles.

Swallowing a huge portion of the area including buildings, vehicles, and of course innocent people, all of whom must run for their lives to try, without success mind you, to escape the calamity!

The victims of this natural disaster find themselves transported to the past in Los Angeles where they will do everything possible to survive and hopefully return to their friends, families and loved ones!

With the exception of the Pilot episode, and flashbacks to the present which were filmed in Los Angeles, La Brea (click to read the latest La Brea tweets on Twitter) was filmed entirely in Australia at Docklands Studios (click to learn about Docklands) as well as several exotic locations including the famous tourist area, Mount Macedon, a dormant volcano that is part of the Macedon Mountains of the Great Dividing Range, which is  located in the Central Highlands region of Victoria, Australia.

The La Brea series, produced by NBC Television and Keshet Studios (click to learn about Keshet), was created by David Appelbaum (The Enemy Within, The Mentalist) who executive produces the series with people whom we admire for their past accomplishments including Steven Lilien (Alcatraz), Avi Nir (Homeland), Ken Woodruff (Gotham) and Bryan Wynbrandt (Alcatraz). The Pilot episode was directed by Thor Freudenthal (The Expanse) who science fiction fans will recall for his veteran work over the past decade.

As we mentioned in our preview of La Brea, this series has all the makings of a hit featuring an outstanding international main cast starring Natalie Zea (Justified) as Eve Harris, Eoin Macken (Merlin) as Gavin Harris, Jon Seda (Chicago P.D.) as Doctor Sam Velez, Chiké Okonkwo (Being Mary Jane) as Ty Coleman, Karina Logue (Animal Kingdom) as Marybeth Hays, Zyra Gorecki (Chicago Fire) as Izzy Harris, Jack Martin (All Rise) as Josh Harris, Veronica St. Clair (13 Reasons Why) as Riley Velez, and Rohan Mirchandaney (Mystery Road) as Scott Israni.

Supporting roles feature several superb and well known character actors including Stephen Lopez (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) as Billy Fisher, Pacharo Mzembe (Terra Nova) as Tony Greene, Chloe De Los Santos (Tidelands) as Lilly Castillo, Josh McKenzie (Filthy Rich) as Lucas Hayes, Nicholas Gonzalez (The Good Doctor) as Levi Delgado, and Ione Skye (Wayne’s World) as Jessica Harris.

The NBC tagline describes the series as “A massive sinkhole that opens in LA splits the Harris family in two, with Eve and her son sent to a mysterious primeval world. Gavin discovers that the visions that have plagued him for years might hold the key to bringing them home”.

La Brea is a mixture of “Land of the Lost” (1974-1977) meets “Lost” (2004-2010 which is in fact mentioned in the Pilot episode), and any number of disaster style entertainment products all rolled into one new science fiction dramatic series.

La Brea S1x01 Tar Pits begin to percolate
Tar Pits begin to percolate. Image courtesy NBC

As the Tar Pits begin to percolate, the result is that half of the Harris family become victims of the inexplicable wormhole that has ripped a hole in time. Eve, Josh and many others must find a way to not only survive, but hopefully find their way back to the present to rejoin their families and friends.

Sent through the wormhole, which remains open throughout the Pilot episode, the overarching question is how have the victims been sent back to what appears to be prehistoric times, replete with landmarks that exist then and in present day history near the Tar Pits and the Los Angeles Hills, and how the prehistoric vultures are able to travel to the present!?

Please find our analysis and review of the Pilot episode below broadcast on September 28, 2021. We include the first five minutes courtesy of the team at NBC Television and a sneak peek of season one at the end of our analysis for your enjoyment.

    La Brea Pilot:

The Pilot episode opens with Eve, Josh and Izzy Harris stuck in traffic near the La Brea Tar Pits museum complex.

It seems to be a normal day in Los Angeles as the Harris family are making small talk about their lives and how nasty the traffic is in the city.

It will turn out to be anything but a normal day in LA!

Suddenly something terrifying begins to happen. The buildings nearby begin to topple as a giant sinkhole opens centered on the La Brea Tar Pits. The Harris’s exit their vehicle and run for their lives. Eve watches hopelessly as Josh falls in after he tried to help a child escape the disaster.

Eve runs to Josh who has been swept into the sinkhole. Izzy attempts to save her mom by grabbing her wrist, but Eve tells her to let go and screams “Run!”. As Eve falls into the sinkhole, this is when we see that the sinkhole must actually be a wormhole because no sign of the buildings or other debris is visible.

As buildings collapse and vehicles fall into the expanding wormhole sinkhole, we learn that Eve, Josh and dozens of others have become victims of the disaster.

Eve finds herself unharmed landing in a grassy area. Off in the distance, Eve observes smoke coming from a clearing not too far away and heads off to investigate.

Josh and Eve reunite meeting the others who have survived the disaster where we witness the remains of buildings torn apart in the cataclysm that befell them.

La Brea S1x01 Gavin and Izzy are reunited

The scene moves to Gavin Harris who is trying to be rehired by the military at an Air Force base in El Segundo, California in order to resume his career.

We learn that Gavin was relieved of duty for suffering what were thought to be hallucinations. In the car before the interview, Gavin takes a few swigs from a silver flask with some sort of booze in it while visions of giant vultures and an enigmatic boulder with a red petro glyph on it appear in his mind. Gavin shakes it off for his interview.

The duty officer is polite to Gavin saying she will see what she can do. Apparently no one has told Gavin that getting drunk before an interview may not be the best approach to getting hired by the military again!

As Gavin leaves the interview he learns about the disaster near Los Angeles. Gavin calls Izzy and tells her he is on the way. Upon reuniting, Gavin learns that Eve and Josh are nowhere to be found.

La Brea S1x01 The wormhole shimmering in the night

Back to the victims. For the first time, a shimmering is observed at the bottom of the chasm. Later that night, the shimmering wormhole can be observed covering a large portion of the night sky in the prehistoric past.

Interestingly, the long fall through the wormhole in time has apparently cushioned the impact for the humans and many of the vehicles that fell backwards in time. While some vehicles appear to be dented, the victims of this tragedy appeared to only suffer minor bruises and cuts during their ordeal.

Could there be an alien influence that helped the humans survive the great distance they fell that allowed them to arrive relatively unscathed? At this point we do not know. What we do know is they appear to be in the past as evidenced by the giant prehistoric vultures that flew out of the wormhole back in present day Los Angeles.

La Brea S1x01 Eve and Josh meet the survivors

The scene segues to Eve finding Josh and meeting the other survivors.

As we proceed, we find out that there are regular honest people mixed with what we will learn is a crooked female cop named Marybeth Hayes, a doctor named Samuel Velez, and a near suicidal man named Ty Coleman.

Ty Coleman is packing what appears to be a silver Model 1911 semi automatic pistol that comes in handy later. As well we find other adults and a couple of young teenagers who have also been trapped in prehistoric time by the wormhole.

We learn that there is an effort by the survivors to collect what prepared food and water is available that fell into the wormhole. Everything is scrounged from what is apparently left from local stores, warehouses and vehicles near the vicinity of the cataclysmic event.

La Brea S1x01 Josh and Eve confront Marybeth

During an outing near the camp they have setup, a search for supplies is undertaken to salvage what they can from the disaster, and critically find food and water. Eve and Josh discover that Marybeth the police officer is trying to hoard foodstuffs for herself depriving the food from the other survivors.

Caught in the act, Marybeth basically tells then to mind their own business and takes the food anyway, but begrudgingly gives them one nutrition bar each.

    Thanks a lot Marybeth!

No doubt Marybeth the crooked cop is going to be a lot of trouble later during season one!

Just when things seem to settle down, while coming back to the compound area, a pack of wild wolves attacks the survivors camp. The first “Red Shirt” (ex)survivor is killed when one person is dragged away as a tasty snack for the wolves. Josh suffers a deep bite wound from the vicious creatures. Eve is threatened by the wolves, but is saved by Ty who uses his pistol to drive the beasts away. However, Josh is severely injured that will require stitches and antibiotics if he is to survive.

La Brea S1x01 Gavin goes to tell the military about the drone
Eoin Macken as Gavin Harris. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

As the scene switches back to Gavin and Izzy, we meet Jessica Harris, Gavins sister. Jessica has been trying to help her brother deal with his emotional issues since he left the Air Force. We are led to believe it may be PTSD. However Gavin has actually been seeing visions of his wife and son in the past. This is confirmed when Gavin realizes that he has been seeing the same boulder with the red petro glyph at La Brea Tar Pits in his dream visions.

Later, when the government Air Force attempts to send a drone to try and enter the wormhole, it loses contact at the event horizon and crashes on the other side. We then learn that Gavin has not been having hallucinations because Gavin can read the serial number of the aircraft back to the military when it crashes in prehistoric time.

This will make Gavin useful in the future to the government investigators who are stunned that Gavin could identify the drone aircraft. Looks like Gavin will get re-hired by the military after all!

    The episode winds down with several important discoveries;

S1x01 Ty, Eve and Dr Velez see a Smilodon
S1x01 Ty, Eve and Dr Velez see a Smilodon. Image by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

Gavin digs up the boulder with the red petro glyph and finds Eve’s time tarnished wedding ring in the diggings, giving him a clue to where in time his family is trapped.

We then see Riley Velez taking care of Josh before Eve, Ty and Dr. Velez leave to find medical supplies.

They are searching for an ambulance that Ty had seen earlier in order to obtain medical supplies urgently needed to save Josh. Eve recognizes a Mastodon statute that was at the La Brea tar Pits and then looks at the skyline.

They are all completely stunned to learn that they are looking at the Los Angeles foothills!

The Pilot episode ends with a scene near the EMS ambulance vehicle that fell through the wormhole as Eve, Ty  and Dr. Valez are observed taking the emergency supplies needed to save her son Josh who was bitten by the wild wolf.

La Brea S1x01 Smilodon Saber-Tooth Tiger attacks Ty Eve and Dr Valez

The screen fades to black as a new threat appears blocking their way; a snarling Smilodon or Saber-Toothed Tiger looking for some dinner!

Due to the fact that Smilodon is depicted near the La Brea Tar Pits, a known habitat for the ferocious felines, the addition of the Smilodon cats as characters in the series, known specifically in scientific circles as one of three known species; S. Fatalis, S. Gracilis, and S. Populator Saber-Toothed Tigers is a fun addition to the series, except of course for the big cats dinner victims!

This revelation clearly places our timeline somewhere before 8,000 BC when the Saber-Toothed Tiger species is known to have become extinct.

    La Brea S1x01 Prehistoric man
    Prehistoric man. Image courtesy NBC

This is the precise information about where our survivors are located in time to anchor the series story arc.

When coupled with the large boulder observed in the series with a painted carved glyph image that Gavin dug up, confirms that the timeline in this range of history, it is fair to assume that prehistoric human beings must also be present in large numbers.

Confirming these facts is an image of a prehistoric man dressed in animal fur. The man is observed just before the episode ends. He has been watching our heroes trapped in time!

In conclusion, La Brea is a fun science fiction drama series that we will watch each week.

The real question is whether the program will garner high enough ratings to make it to a second season? Being placed on Tuesday nights, only time will tell if La Brea will itself survive or become extinct like the Saber-Toothed Tigers!

We leave you with a promotional video courtesy of NBC about what is coming up in season one of La Brea. Enjoy.
