Alt Press Expo – Public Service Announcement: Help High Tech High Reduce School Drop Out Rates!

Hello alternative press and comic book fans,Click to visit the Alternative Press Exposition San Francisco

During my first day at the Alternative Press Exposition I explored the historic converted railway station now known as the Concourse Exhibition Center in San Francisco reveling in the fact that the APE convention had more than doubled in size over 2009! The convention is designed to spotlight the value of alternative press methodologies!

Click to visit the Concourse Exhibition Center!During my journey I was drawn to a specific booth in the afternoon that fascinated me. I observed a booth with the title “High Tech High“. I headed over to see if I could find out what High Tech High was doing at the Alt Press Expo?

The nice people running the booth were from Chula Vista California, home of High Tech High in their area. I then recalled Click to learn more about High Tech High Chula Vista!from memory my own years in high school when small class sizes were the norm and how fortunate I was in the 1960’s and 1970’s to receive a quality education before the economic realities of the twenty-first century have made such more difficult.

I immediately stopped my tour of the huge Concourse Exhibition Center facility to chat with this group. I discovered that High Tech High Chula Vista was leveraging comic books as alternative press methodology to highlight a problem in many societies including the United States in general and many communities in California in specific. What problem? High School drop out rates! Why was I interested?

The reason is simple. In my own family I have a nephew who is about to enter High School but may not since he may fail middle school! The problem of educational drop out rates and failing students is a plague on our society which will haunt the failing students and their families in their lives for years, even decades to come! Worse, the cascading negative effects on our society are among the most devastating often leading to drug abuse and criminal youth activities!

There are many reasons for the high school drop out failure rates, far too many to discuss here, but this subject, as mentioned, had special interest to me. I selected this editorial topic because I believe the general public has great interest in this subject as well and ask for your support.

Click to learn more about High Tech High Chula Vista!
To that point, I had the privilege to discuss the matter with the High Tech High Chula Vista Team Leader Patrick Yurick from Chula Vista California. High Tech High of Chula Vista has created a special comic book “Nice Meeting You, Goodbye” to raise awareness about this disturbing problem.

While we all know that a college or university education may not be for everyone, a solid foundation in the basics, in being articulate, being well read, and being able to understand mathematics to help young people be prepared in the real world is a must. We include an interview (below) by the High Tech High Chula Vista Team for your edification and enjoyment.

NOTE: The date quoted in the interview for So-Cal Comic-Con is incorrect. So-Cal Comic-Con is on Saturday November 06, 2010, not November 09, 2010!

    PRESS RELEASE:

The Graphic Novel Project’s second major issue, Nice Meeting You, Goodbye, is finally here in full color with rich dialogue and diverse visuals. This graphic novel has been produced by a team of high school students at High Tech High Chula Vista in Chula Vista, California.

Students created a full length color comic addressing the rising problem of high school dropouts.  This project took a year of hard work requiring the entire team to pull long hours with many weekends involved to make the comic the best product possible.

HTH Graphic Novel Project used a collaborative process that included 18-20 students ranging from 9th to 12th grade working in departments. Click to learn more about Wacom Technology!Departments ranged from Research & Design, Illustration, Digital Art, Lettering, and Production. Of the technology used to create the work, none was more valuable than the Wacom technology to digitally render each page for the entire graphic novel.

Click to learn more about HTH Graphic Novel Project!
Research & Development for the book was a rigorous research process that included interviewing more the 25 students, teachers, parents, and local dropout center personnel.  A professional writer was brought in to use as an editor for each step of the writing and story building process. The project was completed in a little over 15 weeks.

By bringing the issue of Nice Meeting You, Goodbye to the Alternative Press Expo, the HTH Graphic Novel Project hopes to spread the social message of high school drop outs, and also gain a larger audience of this issue and issues to come.

“This project will change the way that other schools look at after school activities.” Says Luke Piedad, contributing author and student.  “The process has opened my eyes to a wider perspective on life and avenues to explore journalism.”

  • Tacos for Trey: A Fundraiser for MPS II

It was via word of mouth on Twitter, primarily from the Stargate: Universe people, Tacos for Trey Poster - Click to visit and donate!that I first heard about “Tacos for Trey” and the Purcells’ involvement with increasing fundraising and awareness of a genetic disorder called Mucopolysaccharidosis II (MPS II), or Hunter Syndrome.

When I first got to “Tacos for Trey”, I introduced myself to Ryan Purcell, Trey’s dad, and explained that I write for WormholeRiders, just to make sure that it was okay if I went around taking pictures and wrote a short piece about the event. Ryan and his wife Deb were more than happy to have me write a piece, given that spreading the word about MPS II is one of their goals. You can check out their website for Trey by clicking on the banner below.

    Tacos for Trey Site Image

The disorder disrupts enzymatic processes, interfering with the body’s ability to store and break-down mucopolysaccharides. In case you need a refresher on some biology, enzymes are the chemical powerhouses of the body: they facilitate the chemical reactions which are so integral to the body’s normal functioning.  The body depends on an extremely complex biochemical equilibrium, and when this is disrupted by a genetic disorder, the symptoms are often severe and debilitating. In Hunter Syndrome these symptoms can include (but are not limited to) heart disease, respiratory infections, liver enlargement, and central nervous system involvement can result in developmental delays. Patients with Hunter Syndrome often display a wide variety and combination of symptoms, but it is always progressive – that means, as the byproducts build up with age, the symptoms get worse. An Enzyme Replacement Therapy known as Elaprase is one way to treat the disease, but it is not a cure – it helps to manage the symptoms. If you are interested in reading more, check out the Purcell’s website, or http://www.hunterpatients.com/. You can also check out this great promotional video on YouTube for “Tacos for Trey” and the MPS II Research Fund: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_rN_MIw0O0

    The Gym

    Announcer

“Tacos for Trey” is a family-oriented event from which the proceeds are donated to the Canadian MPS Society MPS II Research Fund. This was the third such event, and if you’re in the area next year you should definitely consider dropping by. The goal is to raise enough money to fund a $40 000 research grant. When I first got there, Grizz Salzl, a friend of the Purcells and a coworker of Ryan’s, was giving a short speech.

Grizz, inspired by a friend of his, came up with the idea to host the first “Poker for Trey” Poker Tournament to raise money for the MPS II fund. The Edgewater Casino provided the venue and waived their fees. Players in attendance were: Ivon Bartok, Louis Ferreira, Robert Finnegan, Tim Holtby (proxy for Carl Binder), Ken Kabatoff, Harey LaRoque, Lou Diamond Phillips, Chad Riley, Grizz Salzl, Mark Savela, Matt Simpson, Robin Smith, Roger Wells, Lawren Bancroft-Wilson, Kelly Whitfield, and Tio Zeviar. People who donated but were unable to attend were: John Zulinski, Ken Andersen, Mark Higham, Brian J. Smith, and Jamil Walker-Smith. As a result of “Poker for Trey”, Grizz presented a cheque to “Tacos for Trey” in the amount of $2,105.

There was face-painting and balloon twisting for the kids – all of whom looked like they were having a blast – as well as a raffle and silent auction for the grownups. There were also two piñatas, a Minnie Mouse and Spiderman, for the kids to whack towards the end. Since the event was held at a school, the kids were also taking advantage of the sunny day – which are rare enough in Vancouver – and enjoying the playground and hockey court.

As I mentioned, I heard about the Purcells on Twitter, and one reason that the SGU cast and crew are so supportive of this cause in particular is because Ryan Purcell is a camera operator on Stargate. While wandering around and taking pictures, I was chatting with numerous people who mentioned that they work with Ryan. It is an amazing thing to see when an extended “family” of sorts pulls together to support one of their own. In talking with a woman who works closely with Ryan, she mentioned that she had seen over a dozen people with whom they work regularly.

    Jim and Heather

When I first got there, I saw David Blue, but didn’t get a chance to snap a picture and chat with him at all. Other people who were there, with whom I did get a chance to chat, were Peter DeLuise, who was there with his wife Anne Marie, Jim Menard, David Hewlett, and Amanda Tapping. I did hear that Ryan Robbins was there, and I know that several other SGU people on Twitter talked about attending.

If you want to make a donation towards MPS, you can visit the Purcell’s website, or click on the logo to take you directly MPS Donateto the MPS Society of Canada’s donation page.

After attending “Tacos for Trey” I find it amazing that the first year the Purcells held the event it was a small gathering in their backyard. Looking at the event this year, only the third one, it is amazing to see how far they have come. It just goes to show you what the determination of parents can accomplish. I look forward to learning how much they were able to raise for MPS II at this year’s “Tacos for Trey”.

The reason I started the “Support Your Local Food Bank” Facebook page is… I don’t feel we will ever cure cancer, high blood pressure, HIV or other diseases as long as people make money off the medications. But we can cure hunger.

If we look at the numbers I sent to WHR, by banding together we all can do a lot on our own as “people” to ensure no one goes to bed hungry.

What are we asking for? Only 10 dollars a month. This  is not much considering the amount of food the food bank can get.

    —–

NEW YORK, NY (April 14, 2010) – MTV today announced that it is partnering with the teen volunteer organization DoSomething.org to air the first-ever charitable episode of its hit reality dance competition series from Warner Horizon Television – Randy Jackson Presents America’s Best Dance Crew” – LIVE on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at 10 p.m. ET/(tape delay) PT. In a landmark “ABDC” event, ALL five previous “ABDC”–winning crews will return to perform and to honor five of DoSomething.org’s most dedicated young social activists for their incredible contributions to their communities. “America’s Best Dance Crew” and DoSomething.org will highlight the causes of these five young people, and the network will reward each of their organizations with cash donations to help augment their efforts. The JabbaWockeeZ, Super Cr3w, Quest Crew, We Are Heroes and Poreotix will perform together and will also be partnered with a youth volunteer whose charity they will learn about through hands-on work with the organization, later performing exhibition routines in their honor.

Fans will get to see the five previous “ABDC” winners kick off the show in an explosive, one-night-only group performance; watch them give back as they work side by side with the youth volunteer and later perform a solo routine in their honor; DanceCrew.MTV.com and learn how their lives have changed since they were last on the “ABDC” stage.  After viewers watch this very special episode, they can impact change themselves by logging onto to find out how to take action through DoSomething.org.

DoSomething.org is one of the largest not-for-profit organizations in the U.S., inspiring and empowering  young people to take action around important causes.   For each of the five young people participating in this episode, DoSomething.org has provided a platform to expand their projects through financial support, national exposure and tailored guidance from the Do Something staff.

“I am so happy ABDC can team up with Do Something, which is one of the best charitable organizations out there, and together we can try to get more young people excited about volunteering and making a difference,” said executive producer Randy Jackson.

“Just like Poreotix rocked ‘ABDC’ this season, these five amazing young people are rocking community change every day and we’re psyched that ‘ABDC’ is featuring them,” said Aria Finger, Chief Marketing Officer at DoSomething.org. “We know their incredible stories will inspire millions of fans across the country to take action in their communities as well!”

The youth activists to be honored by “America’s Best Dance Crew” and DoSomething.org are:

    Marvelyn Brown, 25 (Brooklyn, NY)

Marvelyn contracted HIV through unsafe sex and is now a dedicated activist for HIV/AIDS prevention and education. Through her non-profit organization Marvelous Connections, she has given a voice to the rapidly rising number of women afflicted with both diseases in the United States. She has appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” CNN and multiple other media programs and outlets in support of these efforts. She has spoken to over a half million people globally to date, 200,000 of which went on to be tested for HIV/AIDS after listening to her speak. Her goal is to continue using her personal story of contraction to educate others and, ultimately, stop the spread of HIV/AIDS.

    Josh Sundquist, 25 (Washington D.C.)

Josh is a cancer survivor, amputee and Paralympic skier who created the social networking site Less Than Four, where amputees can ask questions, get answers and develop a community. Josh competed in the 2006 Paralympics in Turin, Italy, and has been published in The Washington Post, Daily Guideposts, the Richmond Times and Current, Newsweek’s college magazine. Additionally, his memoir, Just Don’t Fall, was release through Viking/Penguin in January of this year.

    Jordan Coleman, 14  (Hackensack, NJ)

After learning that less than half of African-American males graduate from high-school, Jordan developed and released the film “Say It Loud” to promote the importance of education. He took the film on a seven-city tour and continues to spread his message at community centers and schools across the country. He was also the only young person invited to speak alongside notable community activists Al Sharpton and Wyclef Jean at the Education Equality Rally during the Obama presidential inauguration.

    Sarah Cronk, 16 (Bettendorf, IA)

Sarah started one of the country’s first cheerleading squads for students with special needs – the Spartan Sparkles – and went on to co-found the non-profit organization The Sparkle Effect, which aims to inspire and empower high-school cheerleaders across the country to start their own squads for individuals with special needs.

Jackie Rothman, 18 (Santa Barbara, CA)

Jackie created Everybody Dance Now (EDN!) to provide a healthy outlet to the nearly 2,000 Santa Barbara-area youths who are considered at-risk to join local gangs. Through dance classes, the organization provides young people a free and compassionate environment away from peer pressure, violence, drugs and alcohol. Jackie has helped over 750 local Santa Barbara young people to date and is currently working on expanding EDN! so she can reach more individuals.

Season five of “Randy Jackson Presents America’s Best Dance Crew” continuously pushed the envelope with exciting challenges, including the show’s tradition of producing episodes dedicated entirely to the music of one exceptional performer – Usher, Swizz Beatz and Lady Gaga were all featured. Shot on location in Los Angeles, the series is a weekly reality dance competition showcasing the most innovative dance crews in the nation as they face challenges that push them to their limits physically, emotionally and creatively. Viewers from around the country choose their favorite crews via phone, text messaging and online voting (http://dancecrew.mtv.com) and one team is sent home every week until the crew left standing is crowned America’s Best Dance Crew and wins the $100,000 cash prize.  The show is hosted by Mario Lopez, and the series’ judges are JC Chasez, Lil Mama and Omarion. Correspondent Layla Kayleigh covers all the backstage reactions as one crew is eliminated each week, ultimately revealing the nation’s best dance crew.

“Randy Jackson Presents America’s Best Dance Crew” is executive produced by “American Idol” judge Randy Jackson, Joel Gallen (“The Sing Off,” “MTV Movie Awards,” Tenth Planet Productions), Hip Hop International’s Howard Schwartz and Karen Schwartz (the creators of the USA & World Hip Hop Dance Championships), Rob Lee (Bayonne Entertainment), Harriet Sternberg and Abe Hoch (both of Dream Merchant 21 Entertainment) and Josh Greenberg (“The Sing Off,” “MTV Movie Awards”). Craig Erwich, Brooke Karzen and Drew Tappon are the executives overseeing the project for Warner Horizon Television (“The Bachelor,” “The Bachelorette,” “High School Reunion,” “True Beauty”). Liz Gateley, Lauren Dolgen and Morgan Selzer are the executives overseeing the project for MTV.

  • Public Service Announcement: Help Chile Earthquake Victims!

Two major earthquakes in 2010! First in Haiti and now an 8.8 quake in Chile!

WHR is suspeding our regular franchise series and convention news coverage for 24 hours to focus ourselves and visitors on helping the victims of the tragic and devastating 8.8 earthquake that has hit Chile. We will continue to seek non direct donations (meaning we make phone calls to get people to donate to official charity agencies).

Devastation in Chile. Please Donate Now!

Thank you for your donations to help the millions impacted in Chile and Haiti. WHR will resume our normal programming tomorrow.

Local Chilean in front of devasted church! Donate NOW!Tens of thousands of people are feared dead and several million have been impacted by this disaster. Therefore it is inappropriate for us at this time to do anything other than help try to send aid to the official agencies from the United States and around the world to help coordinate relief and aid efforts in Chile.

As with the Haiti disaster, Please do not send food, clothing or supplies yourself as logistics to coordinate delivery is better left to agencies whom are better equipped than any of us to get the people, food, water and medicines required to help the Haitian people recover from this disaster of nearly unparalleled proportions.

How can you our friends and visitors of WormholeRiders Help? Donate money. NOW. The image links will take you places where you can make a directed donation to the charity of your choice.Click to visit WR_Systems (Kenn) on Twitter

Please be careful with your donations by using one of the verified sources noted below as there are already Internet hackers, criminals and huckster’s who are only trying to ‘make a buck’ by tricking you into surrendering your bank account information.
