Fringe Review Immortality Detailed Analysis Review with “6B” Sneak Peek!

Greetings once again Fringe fans!Fringe Retro. Click to visit Fringe on FOX!

    Olivia (Anna Torv) with red hair, air transportation by dirigible and Alt Fringe Division Agent Lincoln Lee (Seth Gabel) is in charge;

Click to visit 20th Century Fox Television!it must be another alternate episode. And who is the hot guy Alternate Olivia is spending her time with? Click to visit Warner Brothers Entertainment!

None other than Bolivia’s boyfriend Frank Stanton (Phillip Winchester) who has been in Texas working for the CDC. This relationship is very important, so pay attention.

Fringe S3x13 Immortality - Bolivia with Frank

Just as we are about to get cozy with Fauxlivia (Anna Torv) and Frank, we are wrenched in another direction to discover that some poor guy, our episodic victim du jour, who seems to have some sort of cock roach like beetle insect inside him that squirms out through his mouth. If you don’t like getting down and dirty with bugs, this episode is not for you.

    Fringe-S3x13-The bug about to emerge

Next, should we feel sorry for poor Frank, who has decided to propose to Fauxlivia? He’s dumb enough to confide in Agent Lincoln Lee (Seth Gabel), who immediately spills the beans to Fauxlivia. Did Frank confide in this man because he knew that he’s a blabbermouth? Or does he choose his confidants poorly? Either way, Fauxlivia now knows and does not seem to be over the moon about it. Despite her love of Frank, will she be able to keep her secret?

    Fringe-S3x13-Bolivia and Frank

Flash to a public washroom where our evil scientist arrives and helps himself to at least one of the insects that are now crawling around on the floor after gorging their little selves on the insides of the poor victim. But these are no ordinary creepy crawlies. They are beetles that were thought to be extinct.

    Fringe-S3x13-The evil bug scientist

    Fringe-S3x13-Lots of bugs

Later, Fauxlivia discovers that the insects do not live outside the body for long. Turns out, after speaking to a bug expert, she learns that the beetles were exclusive to sheep. However in the alternate universe sheep had died out years ago.

Fringe-S3x13-The bug do not live long outside a body

We fade to Alt Walter Bishop (John Noble) also known as Walternate with the important title of Mr. Secretary. Seems he is responsible for some seriously twisted testing on human subjects. The subjects typically die within thirty minutes of administering of an injection of what is no doubt “alt cortexiphan”. Except one, the youngest subject does not die immediately. instead he has developed telekinetic abilities before succumbing.

Fringe-S3x13-Walternate see alt universe cortexiphan results

Alt Brandon (Ryan McDonald) recommends using children. Walternate refuses to use children in his experiments making him different than Walter in our universe who did use children in the Cortexiphan trials. This reveals that Walternate is not so bad after all.

Fringe-S3x13-Brandon tells Walternate about using children

Fringe-S3x13-Walternate say no to using children
We then meet a new character, a lab worker named Mona Foster (Julie McNiven, a wonderful actress recently seen in Stargate Universe as Ginn). Mona helps Bolivia and Alt Charlie learn more about the beetles that figure prominently in the story arc.

Back to Fauxlivia who runs across Frank, helping out for the CDC. A very competent military woman, Alt Astrid (Jasika Nicole), at the Empire air ship port where the victim was discovered, suggests putting out a Fringe Alert regarding the beetle. Frank seems very impressed with her. Could Frank’s reaction to Alt-Astrid go somewhere in the future? It looks very possible.

Fringe-S3x13-Alt Astrid tells them what to do

More investigations follow when they discover that a scientist who’s whole life was wrapped up in this particular beetle went to pieces when the sheep that hosted it disappeared. There had been a symbiotic relationship between the sheep and the bugs. The scene ends when the next victim du jour, a data systems employee is shown dead in a crashed car.

    Fringe-S3x13-Death in a car crash

Our evil scientist is named Dr. Armand Silva (Alon Aboutboul), who, had been speaking to the victim in a coffee shop, is catching the beetles in a plastic tub as they fall from the victim.

    Fringe-S3x13-Dr Silva goes to work

It seems that Dr. Silva has discovered a much more convenient way to harvest his specimens as Agent Alt Charlie Francis (Kirk Acevedo) and Bolivia discover.

Fringe-S3x13-Alt Charlie and Bolivia investigate bugs

At least he isn’t using children. And the bugs making their way out of the victims are getting bigger. Another growing clue.

    Fringe-S3x13-Alt The bugs get bigger
As Walternate struggles with feelings of doubt regarding past decisions with his mistress named Reiko (Joan Chen), he reaffirms that there are lines he won’t cross but others he will such as having a mistress.

We return to Fauxlivia and Frank who explains that Dr. Silva was working on a vaccine for the Avian flu. He was using the Skelter Beetles before the natural sheep hosts had all died out. So, now we have motive. Dr. Silva has altered the beetle’s host so he can complete his work.

But Frank has another surprise for Fauxlivia. He produces an engagement ring. His timing is, of course, terrible, but Olivia accepts anyway. Her reaction to Frank’s proposal suggests that she is not entirely sure about accepting. Frank seems to pick up on this and asks her, “seriously?” We know that she is not startled by the proposal, having been given advance notice by blabbermouth Agent Lee, so her reaction confirms that there is something else going on.

    Fringe S3x13 A happy moment
Fauxlivia heads to a warehouse in Brooklyn. She and Agent Lee investigate. Lee gets himself locked into a freezer. On her own, and unaware she has lost her backup, she hears a noise. It’s a monkey in a cage that startles her. She slips, falls backward and knocks herself out among broken glass containers…full of the beetles.

Fringe S3x13 The deadly beetles surround Bolivia
Has she become infected? Fauxlivia wakes up in a chair, handcuffed. We see Dr. Silva has given Fauxlivia something to drink. Since the drink appears to be the way the previous victims have become infected, it appears that Fauxlivia is next.

Fringe S3x13 The drink of death?

    Fringe S3x13 Is Bolivia nest

We learn from Dr. Silva that since the sheep have died out he has to sacrifice some humans for the greater good by using them as his subjects. Meanwhile, Fauxlivia’s partner escapes and calls the Fringe team in. Believing that Fauxlivia is infected, she is rushed to the hospital. Lee holds gun to Silva’s head. He’s ready to kill the scientist if he doesn’t save Fauxlivia.

Fringe S3x13 Agent Lee takes action to save Bolivia

In the ambulance, Frank is about to inject Olivia with an anti parasitic medication when they discover via ultrasound that she is not infected, she’s pregnant. It turns out that Dr. Silva is infected. He reacts badly as a beetle emerges from his neck. He manages to place the beetle, a queen, into a container before he dies.

Fringe S3x13 Dr Silva gives birth to the queen

    Fringe S3x13 The queen emerges

Fringe S3x13 The queens new home
Once Fauxlivia is in hospital and we know she is safe and well, Frank comes by. Naturally, he is relieved that she and the baby are fine. However, we learn that Frank is not the father. He asks if Olivia loves the father. She doesn’t answer him. Poor Frank. His parting words, “You were going to marry me.” What is going on here?

Fringe S3x13 Bolivia tells Frank the father is Peter

Fringe S3x13 Frank is not happy with Bolivia

Why make the baby Peter’s? The answer is obvious. The writers needed a way to bring Peter back. We know he’s a good man. Once he knows he’s about to become a father, of course he will want to be involved. But will a baby be enough? Will Peter sacrifice his own world for a child?

Walter Bishop receives a phone call. There may be a way to bring Peter back from the other universe, giving us a clue to happenings in a future episode.

Fringe S3x13 Walternate gets a phone call

Walternate shows up at Olivia’s and tells her she is the mother of his future grandchild. Walternate has likely already figured out that Fauxlivia’s pregnancy could bring Peter back to this alternate universe. If it does happen, will grandfather Walternate be a great grandpa?

Fringe S3x13 Bolivia meets Grandpa Walternate

Fringe S3x13 Grandpa Walternate and Bolivia
Will we ever find out if Alternate Walter would make a good grandparent? After all, it’s possible that the baby won’t make it to term in the story line thanks to the lower numbers of Fringe watchers.

Of note is that the live viewing ratings have dropped a little this week to 1.4 (as noted by TV By The Numbers). However, the DVR numbers for the series account for an additional percentage of viewings each week raising the rating to a 2.2. The problem is that DVR viewings are weighted lower because people often skip through the commercials that adversely affects the advertisers who actually pay for series such as Fringe .

Alternate Reality Fringe haters may be congratulating each other over their boycott of Alternate Fringe episodes. That is a pity. They missed a good episode this week. Maybe they will choose to illegally download the episode so that they are technically boycotting the show, but getting to watch it anyway – Let’s call it the “Buy (steal) Your Cake and Eat It Too” concept.

But here is a thought, if you want to kill the show, support illegal downloading and insist that your friends do not watch the Alternate Universe episodes. Do exactly the same stupid things that the Stargate Universe haters did – do everything you can to not watch the show who became so passionate about that the network decided to cancel the series completely. That will show them, will it not? Yeah right! (not).

A suggestion; if you want episodes written the way you think would meet your specific goals or desires, why not write your own Fan Fiction? Then your characters will be exactly the way you want them to be. Or, better yet, learn from the mistakes of a certain minority of Stargate fans, and do not mess up a good thing. I suggest you support Fringe and watch live. Thank you.

Fringe Review Ratings Frenzy – Fan Boycott Frankly a Flop, V Series Improves, The Scourge of Piracy!

Hello Fringe and V Series fans!Fringe Season Three Retro Banner

Well our detailed analysis of Fringe episode “Immortality” is complete (our analysis later today), and this week we were astounded when a vocal minority of the Fringies blew many minds on Fringe Friday February 11, 2011.

Last week we advised “Frankly Fringe Fans First Forget about the last Fringe Friday numbers”. This week we repeat that call except there were some new developments discussed below.

    Fringe Season 3 Group Photo
Click to visit 20th Century Fox Studios!First, the tweet count was slightly higher for Fringe over the previous week with rumors of the series being renewed. We repeat that WormholeRiders News Agency does not believe anything has changed on a permanent basis. Fringe will be renewed in our opinion.
Click to visit Warner Brothers Studios!

In fact several new sources (TV Guide, Michael Ausiello) have now joined the belief that Fringe is “a safe bet” to be renewed, the fans are indeed restless. We understand. if one simply consults with both Nielsen and TV By the Numbers, the answers might be perplexing since Fringe dropped in the ratings to 1.4 as we confirmed for ourselves, however we suggest that you do not discount the facts of the matter at hand.

Click to visit TV By The Numbers! While TV By The Numbers recently changed their opinion that Fringe is now likely to be renewed, and “still on the bubble” the ratings on Friday February 11, 2011 sent the Fringe fans into frenzy! Only seasoned veterans of the entertainment news industry fans knew that freaking out was not called for. Lets review again shall we? The crisis in Egypt continued to literally “suck the oxygen out of the atmosphere” of many shows including the favorite of the FringClick to visit Neilsen Ratings Service!ies.

Third we examined thousands of tweets and found a disturbing trend. A faction of the Fringe fandom has decided to boycott the “Alternate Universe” episode because of elements of the Fringe series they do not “like”.They seem to believe that doing so “helps send a message of some sort” to the show runners! For goodness sakes people, the remainder of the season “is already in the can”. The show runners are building the story arc to a season four! Could you simply be a bit patient? Thank you.

Well we here at WormholeRiders News Agency did more hard work looking at a large number of factors to share with you our understanding. Fringe has NOT fallen forever. There are many factors that decide if a show or series will be canceled.  Last Friday represented continued draining of frequent Fringe fans to other broadcast networks in the “rating number” and “share” of the crucial 18-34 year old and 18-49 year old target groups.

Over and above the so-called Fringe fan boycott, the continuing crisis in Egypt sustained the siphoning off OVER  1 million viewers in the crucial time slots. Supernatural continued to enjoy a resurgence of OVER 1 million viewers as the chart illustrates below. This means one thing. There will be competition between Supernatural and Fringe from here on out. An important question arises: What happens if Supernatural gets a seventh season?

Add all the logical reasons up and it is easy to understand why Fringe dropped to a 1.4 rating and 5 share with approximately 3.717 million viewers.

I do know that Fringe fans were upset about something else. Fringe dropped below another series we follow, V Series. For the first time in weekly history, V Series whipped Fringe (discussed below) HOWEVER you need to look closer at Friday. Fringe was TIED for share and only POINT ONE below CSI in the critical 18-49 target group during the first thirty minutes. We would call that a WIN!

TV By The Numbers - Fringe - February 11, 2011

As WHR has stated before, season four of Fringe is still a certainty as we have reported previously. The facts are that the show runners have as much stated so. Some then ask why no season four announcement yet? Simple! There are a lot of episodes remaining and they want us to all watch LIVE. And we should!

V Series New Banner. Click to visit V on ABC!

Speaking of the ratings for the week ending Friday February 11, 2011, there is good news for fans of V Series? In this week the show now in its second season moved back up in the ratings against very steep competition. Now some may well say wait V Series is in fourth place on Tuesday evenings, and how is that an improvement?

Well if you look closely at the chart below you will see that V Series is on par for ABC series in the previous and subsequent hours! While I am sure that ABC would like to improve its Tuesday evening numbers, the question arises: Will V Series be renewed and could ABC move the series to another night!

TV By The Numbers - VSeries - February 08, 2011

Click to visit V Series on ABC!

Is it any coincidence that V Series jumped up approximately 111,000 viewers to 5.39 from 5.28 million viewers the previous week with a 1.8 rating and 5 share as news indicated that President Mubarok would resign?  In fact if you look carefully at the ratings for all television shows many continued to suffer in the ratings as mentioned above due to current “Real Life” events which culminated in a frenzy that adversely affected programs later in the week.

As we stated previously what kills a series is when fans stop watching live week after week for an extended period. Moreover the biggest problem is with illegal downloading and streaming which has reached epidemic proportions according to the latest report issued January of this year about Internet Infringement.

In closing for now, we ask please read the PDF file, do NOT pirate your television if you want them to survive, and PLEASE watch your favorite shows LIVE if you want them to continue! Thank you.

  • Fringe Review Fans Freak on Fringe Friday Over Fringe S3x12 and V Series Veterans Vibrate Over Ratings!

Fringe Review Fans Freak on Fringe Friday Over Fringe S3x12 and V Series Veterans Vibrate Over Ratings!

Hello Fringe and V Series fans!Fringe Season Three Retro Banner

Well our detailed analysis of Fringe episodes “Concentrate and Ask Again” is complete and we found the Fringies frankly freaking out on Fringe Friday February 04, 2011 as many did not seem to have understanding why the series did not do as well as “Reciprocity” the previous week? Frankly Fringe Fans First Forget about the last Fringe Friday numbers!

We leave the four smiley faces about Fringe being renewed because we do not believe anything changed on a permanent basis. If one consults with both Nielsen and  TV By the Numbers, the answers are right there in front of all of us to see for ourselves!

TV By The NumbeTVByTheNumbers-Fringe-Jan3011-4-SmileyFaces!rs has recently changed their opinion that Fringe is now likely to be renewed and then threw Fringe fans a freaking fast one at the FringClick to visit Neilsen Ratings Service!ies by not connecting the dots to analyze the why of last weeks ratings!

Well we here at WormholeRiders News Agency did some hard work looking at a large number of factors for you to understand the why and wherefore about what happened! Did Fringe fall forever or is there a logical explanation. Fear far less Fringies the competition last week was more than was stiff, it was both championship and revolutionary in nature! You may ask what the frakkin are we freaking talking about? Click to visit Warner Brothers Studios!Click to visit 20th Century Fox television!

First, Friday represented a draining of frequent Fringe fans to other broadcast networks is the “rating number” and “share” of the crucial 18-34 year old and 18-49 year old target groups for three primary reasons.

Reason number one was the escalating crisis in Egypt which siphoned off nearly 1 million viewers in the crucial time slots. Second was the pending Super Bowl with the famous pre championship show about commercials which racked up nearly 10 million viewers. Third and finally, Supernatural enjoyed a resurgence of nearly 1 million viewers as the chart illustrates below. Click to visit TV By The Numbers!

Add all the logical reasons up and it is easy to understand why Fringe dropped to a 1.7 (or 1.6 if you want to be pessimistic and use the half hour ratings mark!). Does this mean Fringe is about to fried? Frak no!

Fringe Friday Fringe 312 Feb0411 Chart Comparison

As WHR has stated before, season four of Fringe is still a certainty as we have reported previously. The fact that the number one sports championship in the world and the largest political crisis in the Middle East juxtaposed themselves on Fringe is no cause to freak out Fringie Friends!

Speaking of the low ratings for the week ending Friday February 04, 2011, lets review some more facts about another series, V Series? In fact if viewers examine the ratings for virtually every series were lower due to the political crisis in Egypt. Now some may say well no the crisis was entering its second week, so why does that or how could that matter?

Click to visit V Series on ABC!

People are you or have you been watching the news? The Egyptian crisis escalated from the previous week for goodness sakes and it was SUPERBOWL week too! Is it any coincidence that V Series also dropped approximately 425,000 viewers to 5.286 from 5.703 million viewers the previous week with a 2.0 rating for the previous week? We think not! In fact if you look carefully at the ratings for television shows many suffered in the ratings last as a result of current events.

We leave you the fans with an important thought for your consideration: A single week does not make or break a series. What kills a series is when fans stop watching live week after week for an extended period, so here is your mission this week; let the diplomats handle the crisis in Egypt and you handle the television remote control and watch your favorite shows LIVE! Thank you.

  • Fringe Review Season Three Episode 11 “Reciprocity”

Fringe Review Season Three Episode 11 “Reciprocity”

Hello again Fringe fans!Fringe Season Three Retro Banner

The mid-season episode “Reciprocity” was spectacular. Fringe with its new home on Friday nights is a proven two week back to back success! WR_Systems (Kenn) is consulting with WormholeRiders News Agency Team leader RedOne68 (Sandra) on ratings analysis. He will be posting a special ratings analysis discussion about Fringe soon.

Topic? Specifically about why some fans have drawn (and continue to draw) the incorrect conclusions that Fringe needed to be “saved”. Nonsense! Fringe was never in any danger of being canceled.

Click to visit Warner Brothers Studios! Click to visit 20th Century Fox television!

This is definitely a Peter-centric episode. Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson) shows a darker, creepier side. Although we are presented with the Doomsday device, it plays very little part in this episode being used to tease the audience for what is coming in the future.  Certainly a cliffhanger leading to Fringe season four, of which we here at WHR have no doubt about.

Odd things begin happening right from the start of the episode. The team is introduced to a device with seemingly, no commonly accepted means of control, such as working parts or means to set it off. They also don’t seem to know where it came from. However, like many great sci-fi shows, it maintains an electro-magnetic field which becomes active, causing Peter’s nose to bleed.

The device becomes part of a puzzle; it is obviously beginning to affect Peter, or, is Peter affecting it and why has he turned out to be a a “bad guy” or was he always? Great turn-about by the creators of Fringe and superb acting job by Joshua Jackson To that point John Noble discusses Reciprocity and Peter below!

Fringe S3x11 Reciprocity - Peter examines machine diagram
There is solid connection between the two. So, Peter is tested to determine the cause of his nosebleed, but nothing of significance is found. Walter Bishop (John Noble), concerned for his son, turns to Nina Sharp (Blair Brown) to boost his brain power. Although we are left to assume that the DNA Nina gives Walter had a high tech beginning, we are not privy to how it was created in this episode. Instead, the writers go with a decidedly low tech method to test it.

Fringe S3x11 Reciprocity - The DNA from William Bell!
Walter inhales the DNA from a bottle. But the method that Walter uses to attempt to help his son, fits Walter’s character to a “T”. He’s reckless and impulsive; qualities we might consider to be child-like. But Walter also shows the feelings of a father. He cares very little about his own safety and focuses instead on science and the results of experiments he has a hand in.

Fringe S3x11 Reciprocity - Back at the lab!

Fringe S3x11 Reciprocity - Peter affects the machine or?

Later, just as we learn that Peter’s heart rate is affected after all, Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) discovers a dead shape shifter with two bullets in his head. Bodies start to turn up in a variety of places as the doctor who had scanned Peter’s brain is found with the same bullet wounds. Whoever the murderer is, he or she has gained access to the doctor by jimmying a window with a knife. Subtle clues about the individual who is eliminating the shape shifters begin to take form and lead us to an unexpected source. While Peter and Olivia have a chat about past wrongs, Walter and Astrid Farnsworth (Jasika Nicole) discover that Walter may have been exposed to chimpanzee DNA. How do we know?

He confirms that he was exposed due to his sudden love of bananas with ice and whipped cream in a banana split! Apparently, Walter disliked bananas before he sniffed a concoction of Chimpanzee DNA. Since chimps have also shown a fondness for insects, I suppose that Walter is fortunate that his only sudden attraction was to bananas. Was the addition of the DNA concept used to muddy the waters in the episode, or will it have great significance later on?

Fringe S3x11 Reciprocity - Banana split time!

Fringe S3x11 Reciprocity - Banana split interupted!

Then, as the episode progresses, we watch a shape shifter take the shape of a homeless person she has just murdered. What is she up to? We never find out, since she, in turn, is shot dead by a shadowed person. This is the big reveal. The person responsible for the murders of the shape shifters steps forward into the light. It turns out to be Peter Bishop. Or is he? Perhaps this is the Peter from the alternate universe. But he’s not done yet. He breaks into another home and shoots a man twice in the back of the head. He has killed another shape shifter.

Peter is interrupted by yet another shape shifter who threatens to cut off a finger or remove an eye. Suddenly, Walter enters, giving Peter the distraction required to save his body parts. But the shape shifter is not so lucky. Peter shoots him in the head. What is happening to Peter? He now justifies the mass killing of shape shifters. He feels no remorse. Concerned, Walter struggles to understand what is going on. Oddly, Nina seems more concerned when Walter inhales untested DNA, than Walter seems to be concerned that his son has been killing shape shifters.

Fringe S3x11 Reciprocity - Shapeshifters in action

Fringe S3x11 Reciprocity - Shapeshifter switches!

Fringe S3x11 Reciprocity - Peter on a mission!
Peter’s personality has taken a much darker direction in this episode than has been common in the past. Is this Peter’s alternate universe evil twin causing havoc in this universe? This is known as The Clean Up The Town plot device where the hero rids the community of the evil that has come to inhabit a once happy and pleasant community. But, unless the hero has authority to do so, there is a danger that he or she can take on the evil that he or she was attempting to get rid of as Walter finds out in “Reciprocity”..

Fringe S3x11 Reciprocity - Walter finds the truth!

Fringe S3x11 Reciprocity - Finding the truth!

So, how do we justify Peter’s behaviour? Walter comes up with an interesting premise. He believes that, somehow, Peter has been, “weaponized” by something he touched. Thus, the murders that Peter has committed, are not really his fault. Peter Bishop is not an evil twin, or resident of an alternate universe. Instead, he is under the influence of a device that has made him behave so uncharacteristically.

Fringe S3x11 Reciprocity - Peter polishes off shapeshifter
A few questions continue to plague us during this episode. We don’t know where the doomsday device came from. Was it created by the Observers? Are the Observers “The First Ones”? If so, why? We know that Peter and alternate Olivia were intimate. Will Peter’s relationship with the real Olivia progress to that point again? Will Walter continue to warp Astrid’s name (I hope so!)?

Fringe S3x11 Reciprocity - Astro shares secrets with Olivia!
I really have to hand it to Anna Torv, who continues to portray Olivia putting on a brave face while utterly dying inside as she contemplates everything her alternate self stole from her. Peter had a much closer relationship with the other Olivia. For someone who has the massive intimacy issues that Olivia has, knowing about Peter and Fauxlivia must create great pain for her and Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) finds ways to make it show. To achieve any closeness with Peter, she would have to find a way to repeat what the other Olivia did. I can see her feeling jealous and even envious of – herself.

Fringe S3x11 Reciprocity - Peter and Olivia together again

Fringe S3x11 Reciprocity - Anna Torv is part of Fringe family!

Fringe S3x11 Reciprocity - Peter welcomes Olivia back!
John Noble continues to show his great acting talent. He manages to demonstrate a child-like innocence and a father’s great love and devotion to his son within the same scene. And that seems to be what this show is all about. Take away the X-Files style of science fiction and the character development of the main characters, and the series often comes down to the relationship of a father and his son, and how important it is to look after family.

Fringe S3x11 Reciprocity - John Noble looking after family

Fringe S3x11 Reciprocity - Joshua Jackson looking after family
One of the questions we need to ask ourselves is how does Nina Sharp (Blair Brown) and Brandon (Ryan McDonald) fit into the family of Fringe in our reality? Can Nina be trusted, and will Brandon do the correct things after he was suspected as part of the conspiracy in Reciprocity? Fringe returns this Friday on FOX at 9 PM EST/PST in episode twelve “Concentrate and Ask Again”. Be sure to tune in live to support science fiction television and remember just say no to illegal downloading and piracy!

Fringe Review Season 3 “The Firefly” – Ratings Analysis with Show Runner Video AND Nimoy’s Return!

Hello Fringe fans!Fringe Season Three Retro Banner

The mid-season episode “Firefly” was spectacular.  Fringe has a new home on Friday nights.  This has some fans worried, but it is a misnomer that Friday night is the graveyard of all television shows as we discuss below once again.

Click to visit Warner Brothers Studios!Wormholeriders News Agency published an excellent story wherein Kenn analyzed some time ago that Fringe would do better in terms of ratings on Friday night’s than the series had on Thursday evenings. Click to visit 20th Century Fox television!

This became fact to when the series show runners shared the news, stating the very same thing today which you can view here.

As WHR has stated before, so long as the ratings hold up, season four of Fringe is a virtual certainty as reported previously. Speaking of the ratings, lets review the facts shall we?

Click to visit TV By The Numbers! The facts are clear. Fringe captured the highest share in the critical target groups of 18 to 49 and 18 to 34. These factors are what advertisers and the studios value to a very high degree. If you need to understand ratings please visit Nielsen and or TV By The Numbers. We would also suggest reading an excellent article written by Craig Engler of Syfy that he recently posted on BLASTER to understand the intricate nature of ratings and their impact on whether television series are renewed or not. I think you will find the article most illuminating. Click to learn more about ratings at Blastr!

Lastly we would also recommend reading some extremely exciting news for Fringe! What news? Leonard Nimoy will be returning to Fringe as William Bell! (courtesy of BLASTER).

Fringe - Over There - Gate activateion by William Bell

    Exposition and Recap:

Season three of Fringe is all about choices, and “The Firefly” addresses the consequences of Walter Bishop’s (John Noble) choice to take Peter from the other side.  This episode also puts emphasis exactly how much Walter has changed and his character has grown.

    Fringe Season 3 Team Banner

William Bell removed a part of Walter’s brain years ago to keep him from remembering his past.  Walter Bishop is reminded of this in the beginning of “Firefly”.  He is self-administering a drug that is suppose to help him remember things from his past. The question is will it work and what will be the ultimate results?

Fringe S3x10 The Firefly - Walter administers drug

Fringe S3x10 The Firefly - Walter administers drug

Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson) reminds Walter that Bell removed part of his brain because Walter asked him to so he didn’t remember what he was becoming.  This ties into the end of the episode and is a very important statement.

We have a very special guest star this week on FringeChristopher Lloyd guest stars as Roscoe Joyce. He played in Walter’s favorite band in the 70’s.  Lloyd does an outstanding job as an elderly man in a nursing home with a touch of dementia.  He is visited by his dead son Bobby, and this is where the Fringe team meets Roscoe Joyce.  By the end of the episode, Roscoe and Walter have become friends and bond as fathers who have lost their sons.

Fringe S3x10 The Firefly - Christopher Lloyd as Rosco

I have seen most of Christopher Lloyd’s movies and I fondly remember him as Doc in Back to the Future.  I can honestly say this is my favorite character and performance by Christopher Lloyd.  The last thing Roscoe said to Walter is “Bring me a strawberry milkshake and I will play some piano for you”.  I hope this means that Christopher Lloyd will visit the Fringe set again.

Olivia (Anna Torv) experiences several awkward moments with Peter.

Fringe S3x10 The Firefly - Olivia and Peter

Anna Torv does an exceptional job, as usual, of portraying the difficulty Olivia has with Peter and the other Olivia’s relationship.  I cannot help but think that she is jealous of the openness that Peter and the other Olivia shared. Of note is a book that Peter had given to Alt-Livia which crushes “our” Olivia. Peter’s moments with Olivia are tender when he shares that the book was for her, not Bolivia.

Peter admits in this episode that he had opened up to the other Olivia and that is something new and difficult for him.  There is also a sense of loss surrounding the whole relationship between the two of them.  I don’t think we can predict where this relationship will go, but I believe the relationship between Peter and the other Olivia satisfied the viewers desire to see Olivia and Peter together.

Fringe S3x10 The Firefly - Will Olivia become happy again?

In “Firefly” there is an orchestrated chain of events that all lead back to one thing, Walter’s choice.  The observers are back in this episode, and the observer “September” takes Walter on an emotional ride forcing him to make the ultimate choice at the end of this episode.  We are introduced to Roscoe Jenkins who has lost his son 25 years ago.  We learn that his son, Bobby, who has been dead for 25 years visited him that night.

The next event happens as a group of men are robbing a jewelry store.  The clerk is bound and her mouth taped.  She is having an asthma attack.

Fringe S3x10 The Firefly - Asthmatic

The observer stops the robbery and quickly goes to the aid of the woman having the asthma attack.  He gives her a puff of her inhaler, but he takes her inhaler with him.  At this point, I realized the inhaler was significant. The observers are then “observed” talking.

Fringe S3x10 The Firefly - Observers

September said “I have set things in motion”.  He said he believes Walter has changed.  It is at this moment that I realize the observers are testing Walter.  It was still not clear as to why they were testing him or what that inhaler had to do with anything!

September then meets with Walter and they go for a walk. He tells Walter that “every action causes ripples”.  He tells the story of the firefly to Walter.  He said that when he pulled Walter and Peter from the lake he caused a chain reaction.  Peter (later that summer) caught a firefly that another girl was meant to catch.

Fringe S3x10 The Firefly - Walter and September

Because that girl did not catch the firefly, she stayed out late and this caused her father to come searching for her.  Her father was driving in the rain and he skidded through a red light and ran over someone and killed them. September tells Walter that this interference has upset the balance.  He gives Walter a warning “When the time comes, give him the keys and save the girl”.

Fringe S3x10 The Firefly - Give him the keys
Walter returns to the lab and Roscoe tells him that he remembered something that Bobby had told him in their last conversation before he died.  He called his father on the phone to tell him of a dream he had.  He told Roscoe he had a dream that his father was old and in a nursing home and a bald man had brought him to see his father.  It was at this moment that Roscoe told Walter that Bobby had been killed by a man driving a truck that skidded through a red light.  Walter makes the statement “That man lost a son because I was unwilling to lose mine”.

Fringe S3x10 The Firefly - Unwilling to save mine

The next scene in the episode is the single most important scene to me.  The asthmatic clerk is in a police car and Olivia and Peter are following them.  Walter is on the phone with Peter when the observer runs into the police car.  Walter rushes to the scene.  The clerk has another asthma attack but because the observer took her inhaler she is in distress.  Peter asks his father to give him the keys and go help the girl.

Fringe S3x10 The FireFly - Walter and Peter

This is the point that I understood why the observer had taken the inhaler and what he meant by his comments to Walter.  Walter choses to give Peter the keys and help the clerk.  Just before the observer shoots Peter with his “magic air gun” as Peter called it, he tells peter “It must be very difficult being a father”.

At the end of the episode the observers are standing outside of Walter’s house and they are discussing the events that have occured.  September said “He has changed.  He was willing to let his son die”.  The other one said “When the time comes he will be willing to do it again”.

Fringe S3x10 The FireFly - Observers disscussion at end

What does this test mean?  The observers set up an elaborate chain of events just to see if Walter would give Peter the keys, risking Peter’s life, to save an asthmatic clerk.  Why would they do this?  It has something to do with the picture that Peter saw with him and a device in it that was suppose to destroy the world.  Perhaps there will come a time when Walter has to make the decision to save the world or to save Peter’s life again.

This episode also put emphasis on Walter’s change as a person.  Did Walter change simply because William Bell removed parts of his brain? Season 3 of Fringe has been about choices.  If you read my last Fringe article about the Parallel Worlds of Fringe, I talked about how anything that can happen does happen.

Remember that It just occurs in a different parallel world.  At that moment in the time  line Walter asked William Bell to remove part of his brain, he became the caring Walter that we love on the show.  In another parallel world, Walter didn’t make the decision to have part of his brain removed and he evolved in the evil Walternate.

    Fringe - Over There Walternate

At some point, these men were the same person as far as brain tissues were concerned. The question are; what does Walter have missing that Walternate still has and will Walter regain his lost memories? And when and if Walter does regain his memory, will he become more like Walternate? I hope not!

As The Wormhole Turns: Is Fringe Circling The Drain? Not on “The Fringe Movement’s” Watch!

Hello Fringe fans,Fringe Retro. Click to visit Fringe on FOX!

We continue our new editorial series “As the Wormhole Turns” with something new that is launching Sunday December 12, 2010 at 12 PM Eastern, 9 AM Pacific time!

We ask; ‘what is happening in the Fringe fandom?’ Is it something that is in response to the movement of Fringe from Thursday to Friday nights beginning January 21, 2011 at 9 PM EST / PST in the United States and Canada. The answer is yes there is a new campaign, The Fringe Network!

Are the Fringe fans worried? Some are, yes. But is Is Fringe really circling the drain to its destruction? Hardly. Watch the videos and please read on to find out why Fringe will be just fine. Thank you!

Click to visit Fringe on 20th Century Fox Studios!Stretching in an arc from Germany to Australia across North and South America, and unlike fans of other series who wait until a series is non renewed (as previously reported by ArcticGoddess1) and then complain when they failed to promote and support their favorite show, a dedicated group of Fringe fans from across the globe has banded together to promote this fine series. Why are these particular Fringe fans executing this campaign? The answer: To attempt to effectively demonstrate the support that exists for the program, and help convince Warner Brothers (the production company) and FOX Networks (the broadcast network) to renew the series for a fourth year and beyond. Click to visit Warner Brothers Studios! Who are these brave souls about to venture into alternate realities and universes to support their favorite television series? Click to visit The Fringe Movement Word Press Site The self described name of this group is called The Fringe Movement or TFM. TFM is an international team of whom WHR is a part (via news analysis). TFM is operating a Twitter account called Fringe Network and is now in process of executing a planned series of web sites of the same name to spread the word about #FringeFriday! The sole purpose of this team effort is to support Fringe when the series moves to Friday evenings at 9 PM ET/PT in the United States and Canada on January 21, 2011. We respectfully suggest you follow them as well. Thank you.Click to visit FringeFriday Fringe Network on Twitter! WormholeRiders News Agency (WHR) has agreed to participate in this project from a news reporting perspective. WHR will follow and report on the effectiveness of this effort as a journalistic "embed" member of the team by analyzing their benchmarks and milestones against the actual results achieved (a fourth season of Fringe). In fact WormholeRiders has been supportive of TFM since its inception earlier in 2010 and was among the first to suggest the term Fringe Friday which has been accepted as a Twitter hashtag by the team (#FringeFriday). WHR is planning on running a regular weekly Fringe analysis series beginning in January 2011 to monitor progress. We hope that other on-line and even print or television media will take notice as well and track the progress and effectiveness of this fan inspired effort. We include The Fringe Movement Press Release dated December 10, 2010 Fringe Banner Mini - Click to visit Fringe on FOXbelow this analysis for your edification and enjoyment. Many have asked me the same or similar question? "Why do several members of our news team feel strongly about a series like Fringe that is still in production which has a good chance of beinWormholeRiders. Click to visit & follow WHR on Twitter!g renewed for a fourth season?" The logic is rather simple. As we have previous reported on "As the Wormhole Turns", one of the reasons to support such an effort is that this campaign is being performed pro-actively in response to a belief that a Friday time slot is the pending death of Fringe as a series. The pro-active nature of this campaign is a good move by fans in our opinion. Why? Fringe has over half a season of episodes remaining in 2011. TFM is taking "the bull by the horns" so to speak well before the return of Fringe on January 21, 2011. Bravo! Mirroring similar pre-emptive efforts by Stargate Universe (Give SGU Season 3) and Sanctuary (Support Sanctuary Season 4) fan groups, The Fringe Movement may very well be preaching to the choir. How? Fringe has a relatively healthy 3.4 United States market share (against very stiff competition), hovering just below or above 5 million live viewers in the United States (according to accredited projections from Nielsen ratings service). As a result, Fringe with the much loved characters Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv), Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson), Walter Bishop ( John Noble), Phillip Broyles (Lance Reddick), Nina Sharp (Blair Brown), Astrid Farnsworth (Jasika Nicole), and of course Gene the Cow (as himself - snirk), appears to be safe for the time being. Fringe S3x09 Marionette - Livia in the lab without a revolver Fringe S3x09 Marionette - Walter & Peter discuss findings Fringe S3x09 Marionette - Walter & Astrid in the lab Fringe S3x09 Marionette - Observant Gene the Cow In the opinion of this reviewer, Fringe finishing fourth against such stiff competition on a Thursday evening, while recovering from a slump during the mini-hiatus during Baseball's World Series is admirable. In fact Fringe has done well since being moved out of its original Tuesday time slot with 7.34 million viewers average for season 2 (see reference table below). However, TV By The Numbers (among other touts) are stating that Fringe is "likely to be non renewed by May 2011". These statements appear to be based on the long term analysis in United States from questionable statistical application sources. I believe these could be proven Click to visit TV By The Numbers recent Fringe analysis!wrong and here is why. Before proceeding, consider what is crazy is that people keep quoting (and re-quoting) this single story ad-nausea by several dozens if not hundreds of sites (Google them, they come right up) as if the original source were the gospel. It is NOT the gospel as we will share with you below. TV By The Numbers appears to be making a prognostication because Fringe dropped from nearly 10 million viewers (9.96 million) in the first season 2008, to 7.34 million viewers in 2009 according to Fringe Wiki and other confirmed sources which quotes several authoritative references. (Click image below and look under the section "US Ratings" by scrolling scroll down). While this may appear to be a significant drop of ~2.58 million views, comparing viewing numbers on different weekdays is like comparing apples to oranges. Nor does doing so reveal the entire story since the view counts above include re-run viewing not calculated in the current 5 million LIVE viewer rating projections as we illustrate and will discuss further below. Click to visit Fringe Wiki and view Rankings! Kevin Reilly of FOX EntertainmentTo counter the negativity of the yellow journalists "stirring up the pot" about the Fringe move to Friday's in 2011 that are being proclaimed by so called experts, Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly commented (which was re-quoted all over the internet) and was recently remarked on the official Fox Fringe Thread “If it (Fringe) does anywhere near what it did on Thursdays, we can glue that show to the (Friday) schedule because it can be a big win for us." Long before Mr. Reilly made this statement, I hypothesized that the move to Friday was a good idea. Articulated to many people including those on TFM, this was documented in an e-mail. Only the future will determine the veracity of the hypothesis. But consider this: The fact that SyFy is running a wrestling series in the United States may make Fringe a perfect Friday evening alternative  for people seeking an outstanding science fiction show with wormholes, parallel universe, alternative reality characterizations, action, mystery, suspense, a pending war and romance. Fringe S3x09 Marionette - Romance on the rocks! Second, let us explore the so-called Friday night "death sentence" for a series in the United States. This is a load of tripe. In fact such allegations are an urban legend without  a valid statistical foundation as you will see below. Based entirely on a few series that failed in the Friday evening time slot, certain yellow journalists to this very day churn up this rumor into a lather to get fans of their favorite television show upset. Why do certain news sites whip up this lather? Why of course to get you to visit them! Fringe S3x09 Marionette - Olivia heart is broken! The Friday 'death sentence" is a myth pure and simple. Specifically with regard to science fiction series, the myth of Scifi death by Friday's started with Star Trek in the 1960's. Two recent and very famous examples of Friday night success immediately come to mind: Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis which each had over 5 years runs on SyFy on Friday nights.  We include additional examples over the past 40 years below of television series that thrived on Friday night in the United States market (where this unfounded myth was born). Friday Night Success Wiki-ABCFriday Night Successes - CBSFriday Night Successes NBC-WB-CW As we proceed, lets discuss ratings as bit shall we? Not simply focused on Fringe, WormholeRiders News Agency has observed a trend of late for a number of news sites to quote rating numbers that are incomplete or appear skewed to apparently Fringe S3x09 Marionette- Lance Reddick - Phillip Broylesgenerate controversy. The effect is often yellow journalistic in nature to create an environment to draw visitors to their sites. Such tactics are often not based on the viewing realities of today’s audiences, but designed to garner web hits for generation of advertising revenues in the opinion of this observer. I do not think Agent Broyles of the FBI would approve of these methods either! I know from where I speak, and below is the why. After some 30 years in the computer industry in senior management with a focus on analysis, quality and statistics, I learned that statistical sampling methodologies must follow certain rules for the results to be considered valid. Otherwise it is simply guessing. However, networks are not guessing when it comes to who is purchasing advertising and syndicating the series in other markets around the world. Such is the life blood of a network in being able to continue to produce a television series like Fringe. Back to statistical sampling for accurate results in ratings. A prime example is the United States Military Specification 105E (MIL-STD 105E), now known as MIL-STD-1916. The purpose of such specifications is to produce an AQL, also known as an “Acceptable Quality Level”, without an AQL, the numbers are next to meaningless. These standards are widely accepted in various industries the world over and have been for decades to provide accurate and meaningful statistical analysis. Several news ratings sites are using partial ratings components not reflective of the manner in which today’s viewing audience actually watch television programming. Nor is the sampling method statistically accurate. What do we mean by incomplete and inaccurate? Quoting only live viewing or partial live viewing statistics or parts thereof the morning after a broadcast are misleading at best designed to generate controversy. Partial results comprise only a portion of how people in most parts of the world are viewing television and are not properly designed to produce accurate results. Instead such touts apparently quote and re-quote these suspect numbers to get attention (attract visitors and obtain web hits) rather than using statistically accurate methodologies. Simply quoting a number does not make it accurate. The methodology must be revealed and analyzed. For a television ratings ‘system’ to be accurate, it needs to be inclusive of, but not limited to the following components: 1. Live viewing with a large enough sample size to be statistically accurate. This is an important component that takes several days to obtain sufficient data to produce an accurate statistical sample. Often referred to as the PLUS 3 LIVE VIEWING number, this is critical in advertisers decision making on whether or not they will continue to invest advertising revenues in a program. 2. Repeat live or re-run viewings (important for advertising revenue generation) as noted above. 3. Time shifted DVR / PVR viewing. (counted, but not as important because viewers can often skip past the commercials. If you want your shows to survive, view them LIVE during first run to pay homage and respect the advertisers) 4. On-line viewing at the studio or networks web site(s). 5. On line viewing at authorized licensed sites like Hulu and etcetera. 6. Legal downloads from authorized sites such as iTunes a. This is problematic since accurate numbers for repeat viewings of downloads are subjective in nature at best and are not easily obtainable. b. Nor are repeat viewings of downloaded materials easily verifiable using empirically accurate statistical methods. c. Therefore only the actual download is or can be counted. 7. DVD and or Blu-ray sales. 8. Lastly something very critical to consider is that most of these television touts seem to forget: Revenue generation from syndication in international and local markets after their prime runs of the broadcast network. Who owns such rights often becomes a deciding factor on whether or not a series is continued.  In the case of Fringe, no fewer than twelve (12) countries currently license the show. This factor is expanding to further markets in 2010 and 2011 according to confidential sources that I cannot disclose. Further complicating the accuracy of ratings is a very sore subject that this reviewer abhors; Illegal downloading or piracy. The question of how much is being lost from illegal downloading or piracy by people who call themselves supporters of a series is more than troubling. If fan support groups desire that their programs are to continue, they MUST tell all their friends do not illegally download programs (or movies for that matter). Telling their friends to not illegally download is proper behavior and critical to send the proper message to the networks and studios that a specific fan support group effort is genuine. The message must be delivered publicly and in the open for maximum effectiveness. If a fan support effort is based upon such proper behavior, with adherence to ethical and moral values, the effort will likely be deemed worthy. A good example is the "Save Chuck" campaign where the legal purchase of the episodes and DVD's coupled with increased live viewing was promoted. The ethical actions of the fan support groups convinced NBC (the broadcaster) and Warner Brothers (the production company) to order another season. Conversely, fan groups that support illegal piracy by sharing links to streaming sites or 'torrent' sites will be dismissed by "The Powers That Be" (often referred to as TPTB) as unworthy, false, simply unethical, untrustworthy and frankly made up of criminals. Want to help kill a show? Supporting illegal downloading in any way shape or form is your ticket to cancellation of a series. WHR asks that you do NOT support illegal downloading or engage in piracy. Thank you. Fringe S3x09 Marionette - Walter hates pirates! We here at WHR are confident that The Fringe Movement (TFM) understands these requirements and will not allow posting of illegal site links on their Fringe blogs or fan forums. However, should it be brought to the attention of WormholeRiders News Agency management that TFM is supporting illegal downloading we will be among the first to report it here and to law enforcement around the world. Fringe S3x09 Marionette - Livia likes LIVE viewers Conclusion: If all these factors are not considered, partial ratings, partial touting, partial anything is just that, partial. The worst part of this unfortunate situation is that dozens if not hundreds of other sites use these flawed numbers and quote them over and over again sending incorrect and misleading "guesses" upsetting the loyal viewers much like the upset human Marionette illustrated below. Here at WormholeRiders News Agency we suggest waiting for the networks PLUS 3, 7 PLUS 14 and CONFIRMED Nielsen ratings to provide statistically valid LIVE viewing results. We suggest that you the viewer do so as well and take partial ratings touts with “a grain of salt” as the old adage goes. Fringe S3x09 Marionette Illegal mislead individual TFM PRESS RELEASE: December 10, 2010 For Immediate Release: The Fringe Movement and its soon-to-be launched Fringe Network web site presents the latest PRESS RELEASE on our Favorite Fox drama’s scheduling change in 2011. “Save Fringe” is a somewhat negative call to arms that naturally led to a shift in creative vision. Our goal as fans and social network marketeers is to develop a refined image of a strong, popular show landing in a new day/time slot that is simply brimming with potential. Fox Network only asks for viewership to remain stable after the move from Thursdays (where Fringe had to compete with Grey’s Anatomy and CSI). Fans believe the ratings results can do much better than that, with the proper grass-roots campaign. Click to visit The Fringe Movement Word Press Site So here it is: The revised spin breathes fresh air into the concept of watching Fringe LIVE on Fridays at 9 p.m. EST. Fringe is the best produced, best designed, best acted, best scored drama scifi show on TV. Fringe Review Season 3 Episode 6 – 6955 kHz

Hey Fringe fans,Fringe Over There Red

It’s been a while since I wrote about my thoughts on a Fringe episode, and there have certainly been a lot of developments since Olivia. One thing I should probably get out of the way is that I do actually like AltLivia.

Click to visit Fringe on 20th Century Fox Studios!A lot of people I’ve talked with about Fringe can’t stand AltLiv, and I think that part of that stems from the initial knee-jerk reaction that the Other Side is “evil”; but I also think that a large part of it is that we’re seeing a relationship unfold between AltLivia and Peter which should be between our Olivia and Peter.

AltLivia and Peter (Anna Torv and Josh Jackson)

One of the aspects of the switch that bothers me the most, beyond the obvious that our Olivia is trapped Over There, is that there have been so many scenes where I wonder what Olivia’s reaction would have been to the circumstances. Not just with Peter, but also with Walter. The relationship between father and son is still very much in flux, and as Olivia has been there for so much of their rebuilding over the last 2 years that it seems odd to not see her actually involved in their interactions. More on that later, though.

As far as the case details of this episode go, I quite enjoyed it. Part of that, I think, stems from the fact that radio signals are hardly my specialty, so I didn’t really notice any inconsistencies in the science itself. But the big payoff stems from the fact that we’re finally starting to get some concrete details (though some is still supposition by our team) as to what exactly the Machine does. Of course there are always more questions: when is the Machine from? How does it work? Why is Peter keyed directly to it? What role do the Observers play?

Of the mythology introduced in the episode, what intrigues me the most is the idea of the “First People”. You may recall that the first time we heard about them was in the opening credits of Over There (watch the words closely) and there has been a lot of speculation among the fans since then as to who exactly they are, and whether they had something to do with The Machine.

My favourite theory is that the Observers and the First People are one and the same. Or, perhaps, that the Observers are the descendants, all that remains in their bloodline, of the First People. We know that the First People were incredibly technologically advanced and that they discovered something they called “The Vacuum”, which we assume is the Machine that Walternate is attempting to assemble.

The First People, by Seamus Wiles

Note: someone pointed out to me that “SEAMUS WILES” is an anagram of “SAMUEL WEISS”. Chew on that one for a while…

One reason I like the idea of at least a link between the First People and the Observers, even if they aren’t related per se, is that the Observers have an obvious interest in Peter, which would make sense if the First People were the ones to code Peter to the Machine. I am curious as to how Peter’s specific genetic code was programmed into the Machine given that it was created so long ago.

Walter makes the point that creation and destruction go hand-in-hand, and I think it’s an intriguing notion, particularly with regards to the potential effects of the Machine. Walternate seems hell-bent on destroying Our Side, so it seems likely that Walter is right in that the Machine could destroy our world. The question is whether Peter was right when he talked with Olivia in that there is another way besides destruction, a way to save both worlds: perhaps the Machine has the capacity to heal the damage to the Worlds that Walter did when he crossed over to save Peter.

Although, I have to say, I’ll be rather disappointed if the series ends with Peter making a choice to use the Machine to heal the damage, but having to stay on the Other Side because crossing over again would cause another rift. Although, technically Olivia’s way of crossing over doesn’t involve making a hole in the fabric between the worlds, so  theoretically she’d still be able to cross over without causing further damage… But I digress.

    Kevin Weisman as a Shapeshifter

Before I forget, I want to mention how neat it was to see Kevin Weisman in Fringe. In case you’re not familiar with his work, in this episode he played the shapeshifter whom AltLivia throws out of the window, but many of us also know him from Alias, another of J.J. Abrams’ shows (and definitely worth checking out if you’ve not seen it).

I find it curious that apparently Joseph Feller (the man whom the Shapeshifter was impersonating) dropped off the grid in 1997, which makes me wonder how long the Shapeshifters have really been around on Our Side. We found out in A New Day in the Old Town that the last time the owner of the typewriter shop had seen Shifters was six years ago (so, 2004), and I assumed that was the first time they had been on our side, but evidently not.

While, yes, I do like AltLivia, I still don’t quite have her pinned down yet. In some ways it’s a bit deceptive because it sometimes feels as though we already know AltLiv, even though we don’t really, since she’s another version of Olivia. There have been several interviews lately wherein TPTB and Anna Torv discuss their takes on AltLivia (also known as BOlivia, Fauxlivia, and a number of other nicknames) and I think it’s become pretty clear how different Olivia and AltLivia are from each other, even though they’re genetically identical.

Obviously AltLiv was never given Cortexiphan as a child, but also, I don’t think Marilyn Dunham ever remarried; or, if she did, AltLivia’s stepfather wasn’t abusive. Or perhaps her father didn’t die when she was so young. Either way, AltLivia doesn’t seem to have been a victim of child abuse, and combine that with never having been subjected to drug trials, and she is much less haunted than our Olivia. I wouldn’t say that this makes her a better version of Olivia, but I do think that it makes her much more open.

This introduces something of a conundrum for Peter: did he really fall in love with Olivia? Or was he teetering on the edge of something and it was AltLivia who pushed him over the edge? And was it really AltLiv that he’s fallen for, given that she’s pretending to be Olivia?

This actually brings me to something that I’ve found really frustrating, and that is that no one Over Here seems to have clued into the fact that there is something off about AltLivia. In some ways I can almost forgive Peter for the oversight, given that everything has changed dramatically for him in the last couple months, and I’d assume he’s putting down the changes in Olivia to the upheaval of them beginning a relationship. That being said, he’s arguably the one who knows our Olivia the best, at least I thought he was, and for such a smart guy he’s being rather oblivious.

A couple things that really stood out for me in this episode were when Peter asked AltLivia what the numbers were and she couldn’t rattle them off without hesitation: Peter knows Livia has a photographic memory, and he’s seen her reel off older and more obscure numbers than that, so I thought that should have clued him into something. There was also AltLivia’s reaction after she went to meet with the Shifter: our Olivia would never have seemed so panicked after a confrontation with a bad guy; not to mention the fact that AltLivia had no idea who Markham was, and I would think that would be something Peter would clue into.

    Nina and Walter

I did have some hope that Nina might have picked up on something, especially after she flat out told AltLivia that it was uncharacteristic of her not to confront Walter about Peter and the Machine, but nothing, at least not yet, seems to have come of her observation. I did love the conversation between Nina and Walter, especially the fact that they were sharing drugs during it. I always enjoy when we get more of a glimpse at the history between Nina and Walter, and I can’t wait until we learn more about their histories with Bell. The three of them always intrigue me, and I really do hope we learn more about their shared stories.

I actually felt that their conversation was an interesting commentary on students today in general, and on the ideals of this generation. Walter says that the students lack the courage to think against the grain, and in many cases I really do agree. Exceptional cases aside, far too many students are content to be spoon-fed information and seem to lack any drive to think for themselves.

    Astrid and Walter

I enjoyed the scenes between Astrid and Walter: it feels like we haven’t had as much of their bantering lab work this season, and I don’t think I realized how much I missed that until this episode. I absolutely loved that Astrid was the one to break the code. Back in season 1, we learned that Astrid is something of a jack-of-all-trades: she specialized in languages and computers at school, and has been interested in cryptography since she was a little girl. I thought it made a fun change to see Astrid bossing Walter around, and I’m rather hoping the “Watson” nickname sticks.

    Peter and Walter

I find myself of two minds about the continuing rift between Peter and Walter. On the one hand, I don’t think that it would feel at all natural or in character for Peter to forgive Walter immediately. But on the other hand, I miss that father/son dynamic that has been one of the core relationships of the show.

Someone pointed out last week, and it stuck with me, that one of the things that feels so tragic for Walter is that he has neither Peter nor Olivia for support right now. I’m not saying that Olivia has always been Walter’s biggest fan, it’s hard to tell whether she really has forgiven him yet (or if she even should) for the Cortexiphan trials, but she has always been encouraging Peter to give Walter another chance, and to see things from his perspective.

I almost expect Peter’s discovery of AltLivia’s deception to be the catalyst the pushes him and Walter back together, as they may have to find a way to bring Olivia back to Our Side, if she can’t cross over all on her own.

    AltLivia

One last thing, before I tie this up: I’ve said before that I quite like AltLivia, and I do stand by that, even though we’ve seen her do some rather heinous things. I think one of the things that really makes people have a visceral, persistent dislike of her is that she shot that man in The Box, and I know a lot of people who really can’t let that one go, not that I blame them. It’s not so much that I can justify her actions, but that I can kind of see where she’s coming from: she’s a soldier following orders, and she’s trying to save her entire world.

I get the feeling that, at times, AltLivia tries to tell herself that the people Over Here just don’t matter, and tries to convince herself that doing things that feel wrong to her are okay because these people are just “monsters”. I’m not sure if she’s just getting tired of the constant subterfuge or if it’s a result of her spending more time on Our Side, but given her statement to the Shapeshifter, she is clearly tired of killing innocent people.

I can’t quite tell if AltLivia’s speech to Peter while they were waiting to dig up the piece of the Machine was a genuine attempt to try and justify her own actions, albeit indirectly, or if she was just trying to manipulate Peter and keep him focused on assemClick to visit and follow WormholeRiders News Agency on Twitter!bling the Machine.

Perhaps there was an element of both, although she looked rather smug after Peter insisted that there has to be another outcome than just outright destruction from using the Machine.

Time to wrap this up before I find something else to discuss – and there is always more Click to visit NaddyCat on Twitterwith Fringe.

Science Series: The Different Parallel Worlds of Fringe

Fringe S2 Over There part 2 alternative reflections

Hello science fiction fans and “Fringe” fans!

Click to visit Fringe on 20th Century Fox Studios!Season 3 of “Fringe” has depicted the series characters in two slightly different universes.  In this analysis I will address what a parallel universe is, how do the characters get to this alternate reality, and the differences in the two worlds within the television series Fringe.

The focus of this analysis is what is a parallel universe and doFringe Over There Red they actually exist in the real world as well as in the fictional world of Fringe?

The theory of parallel universes states that every outcome that can take place does take place, and that each different outcome occurs in a different parallel universe.  Think of yourself at an intersection in the road.  If you turn right and go in that direction, you meet your future husband and you have a family together.  If you turn left, you never meet your future husband but instead go on to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

When we apply the parallel universe theory that every outcome that can happen does happen, then you not only turned right and met your future husband but you also turned left and won the Nobel Peace Prize.  Therefore, for every decision you make in the course of the day several scenarios are happening in parallel universes.

Below is a video in which Dr. Michio Kaku, Dr. Alex Filippenko, Dr. Clifford Johnson, and Dr. Max Tegmark explain to us the different types of parallel universes.

In the season three episode '6995 kHz' we observe that BOlivia (Anna Torv) has infiltrated 'our side' and has seduced Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson) much to the protest of 'our' Olivia Fringe fans. Peter does not seem to know the difference (yet). How can that be? Fringe S3x06 - BOlivia and Peter Let us now take a retrospective look at the Fringe television for reference on how the series writers have implemented the science and some of our favorite characters, "The Observers" who are no doubt mixed up in these parallel universe's somehow! Fringe S2 Observers meet in Boston At the end of Fringe season one in the episode “The Road Not Taken” we began to realize where the writers were taking us.  They were taking us to a parallel universe.  In this episode Olivia began seeing things and Walter offered the explanation that she may be seeing an alternate reality. Fringe S1 - Dreamscape seeing the other side? In the final episode of season 1 “There’s More Than One of Everything” Walter is seen standing at a grave.  Next, Walter and the Observer are standing on a beach.  The Observer is holding a coin and asked Walter if he recognized it.  The Observer goes on to explain that it’s from a different place and said “There is more than one of everything”. Fringe - The Observer When Walter finds the beach house and inside finds the same coin in a box, he is then seen placing the coin on the tombstone that he was at earlier in the episode.  On the tombstone is the name Peter Bishop 1978-1985.  It was at this point that everyone realized Peter Bishop was not of this universe but another universe. Fringe S1 - The coin in Walter's hand Fringe S1 Peter Bishops grave At the end of the final episode of season one Olivia receives a call from Nina Sharp after confronting her about the details.  She is asked to meet Nina at a hotel restaurant in Manhattan.  However, Nina does not show. Fringe S1 - Olivia confronts Nina Sharp Fringe S1 - Blair Brown as Nina Sharp As Olivia gets on the elevator to leave, the elevator stops at a floor she is met at the door by a woman and is then escorted to a room where she sees a newspaper about the Obama family that does not reconcile with her universe. William Bell then introduces himself.  Olivia walks over to the window and looked out. She realizes she was looking out from one of the twin towers of the World Trade Center! Fringe S1 Obamas White House Fringe S1 William Bell introduction Fringe S1 Olivia looks out Twin Towers This was the pivotal moment in the series showing us that the writers not only intended to talk about parallel universes, but they intended to take us to the parallel universe that has intersected with our own.  This intersection was caused by Walter’s obsession with the loss of Peter in ‘our universe’. Eventually, this leads to a conflict in Walternate’s universe, and the conflict continues in the Fringe television series. Fringe S3 The Plateau - Walternate in action Let’s now examine the science and research to date by some research leaders in this area. In 2003 Dr. Max Tegmark published a paper titled “Parallel Universes”.  He described the 4 types of parallel universes.  A level 1 parallel universe assumes that space is infinite and goes on forever.  This universe exists in the same space as our universe, but we can not observe it because the light from it has not reached us yet. Our universe is estimated to be between 12 and 15 billion years old.  If you can, imagine traveling the speed of light at 186,000 miles per second or 700 million miles per hour. The level 1 parallel universe is an unfathomable distance away if we have been here 12 to 15 billion years and light traveling at 186,000 miles per second has not yet reached us. The level 2 parallel universe assumes that chaotic inflation occurred. Chaotic inflation is part of the inflationary model.  It simply means all the matter we see in the universe today inflated within a fraction of a second from a single point.   The basic properties of space may be different in a level 2 parallel universe, but it is still part of our space.  Our universe is in a bubble that is part of a sea of bubbles (universes). The level 3 parallel universe is the most controversial of the different worlds.  This universe lies within the quantum world and according to Dr. Max Tegmark is mathematically the simplest model.  Mathematicians have named it the “Hilbert space”.  This space is not millions of light years away.  It is right in front of us and there are an infinite number of them. The “many worlds” idea was founded by Hugh Everett in 1957.  It states that there are an infinite number of universes, and everything that could have happened in our past did happen in our past in another universe. The level 3 parallel universe is the model that Fringe has leveraged in the series. Quantum mechanics is the theory that explains how particles at the sub-atomic level behave and interact with one another.  A prediction of quantum theory is quantum superposition.  Superposition states that simultaneously particles can be in multiple places or states at once. We are all made of tiny particles. Therefore, we should also be able to be in multiple places or states at once.   Proof of superposition is the “double-slit” experiment.  In this experiment, shown in the video below, electrons produce an interference pattern by becoming a wave of potential.  When observed the electron behaved as matter instead of a wave.
The level 4 parallel universe is one in which each mathematical structure describes a physical reality.  Dr. Max Tegmark, in the video below, said that “the reason that nature is so well described by math is because in a very deep sense it is math.”  I have listened to Max’s interviews and read his paper on parallel universes. I have to say that now, as I look at the tree outside my window, I see a tree with algebraic equations for branches.  Below is a video interview in which Dr. Tegmark explains the 4 types of parallel universes.  He does a wonderful job at putting all of this information in layman’s terms.
After reading and listening to all the information I could find on parallel universes, my next question is can we travel to a parallel universe? As sci-fi fans we have to say yes we can as observed in Fringe, Star Trek and Stargate! In the Fringe series, we observe that Olivia is able to travel between the two universes because as a child she underwent Cortexiphan trials. Cortexiphan was invented by Dr. William Bell in 1981.  He believed that when children are born their minds are “infinitely capable”.  He developed the drug to prevent this capability from diminishing over time.  According to Walter, the drug enhances people’s abilities of perception. In season 3 episode 5 “Amber 31422” we see Olivia travel back and forth between the 2 universes.  She is put in a sensory deprivation tank and given a set of “psychotropic drugs”.  It is the combination of the cortexiphan, psychotropic drugs, and the sensory deprivation tank that allows Olivia to cross over. They have to use the psychotropic drugs on Olivia because she has been made to believe that she is of that universe, and that Olivia never underwent Cortexiphan trials.
However, we have also witnessed that Olivia has been able to cross over without the deprivation tank as used by Walternate in “Amber 31422”. How does she actually accomplish this task? Is it simply a matter of willing herself to do so? Or is there a another factor such as an emotional reaction that releases the Cortexiphan as when Olivia could see the shimmer of Peter being from the alternate universe? Fringe S2 - Olivia knows about the shimmer In Fringe we have also observed that the William Bell (Leonard Nimoy) Walter, Walternate (John Noble) have some sort of equipment that allows certain characters like Newton to cross over and stay over on spying missions (that is until his demise). The equipment has never been fully explained and perhaps that is best given the realities of the postulated parallel universes and that after all Fringe is a science fiction series. Fringe S2 William Bell and Walter at machine Fringe S2 Over There - Walternate explains ZFT Now lets examine what some of the differences that we have observed in the two universes of Fringe? There have been several notable differences. In the final episode of season 1 we saw the Twin Towers still standing. Alternate Reality Twin Towers - Click to visit Fringe on FOX Fringe S2 Over There - Reality differences The New York Post had a story that read JFK was alive with a picture of him in the office, the $20 bill has a picture of Martin Luther King, Jr., dirigibles are still a means of transportation, public flights to the moon, and smallpox vaccine has not been invented or that the FBI headquarters was never built but instead has a place honoring Martin Luther King? Fringe S3x01 - 'Olivia' - MLK Center sign My favorite difference in the alternate universe is Eric Stoltz as the lead actor in “Back to the Future”!  What would that part have done for Stoltz’s career? Alternate Marty McFly and Doc Brown Moreover, could a young Marty McFly grow up to be a ruthless Daniel Graystone?  It is all about choices, and I believe the writers are focusing on how choices have affected the characters.  The writers have done a great job in developing the characters and showing us what a choice in this universe does to a character in the next. Fringe - Our Peter and Walter If you apply the parallel universe theory to the story, then you would get an infinite number of Olivias and they would all be slightly different.  However, the writers have chosen to deal with the paradox by only showing us the two universes we have in the series. Which raise the question; are there two Gene the cows? Comic Con 2010 Gene the Cow at Warner Bros. booth SDCC, CA The discussion of whether or not parallel universes exist is superfluous to the enjoyment of Fringe. The questions about parallel universes will continue to be explored by scientists in “our universe” much to my and hopefully your enjoyment. Fringe returns every Thursday evening on FOX at 9 PM east and west. If you enjoy the series as much as we at WHR and I do, may I suggest that you tune in to help boost the ratings? Fringe ratings seem to have flagged with the interruption of the World Series. Worse we have observed a disturbing trend for fans of various series including Fringe to illegally download or stream the programs. Please do not do this people because what you are doing is damaging the ability of your favorite shows to survive by promoting revenue generation for the illegal streaming sites at the expense of the producers who work very hard to bring you top quality entertainment. Failure to support Fringe and other programs by illegally downloading them in our universe's reality could lead to its demise. This is not to mention that the producers keep an eye on such things and you are damaging your own reputations. I will end with a touch of humor, but illegal downloading is no joke, its a crime and is ethically wrong: In our universe loss of a show because you failed to legally support it could end up forcing us all to cross over to “The Other Side”. Even if Fringe is already in its eleventh season there you should not support or tweet illegal downloading. Thank you! Click to visit and learn more about Fringe on FOX! • Fringe Review Season 3 – Olivia

    Hey Fringe Fans,

Well, we finally got it: the premiere for which we waited all those long summer months. And the best part? It Fringe Over There Redimpressed in a BIG way. It really is quite frustrating when we suffer through the summer hiatus only to be disappointed by the fall premieres, and I was ecstatic when Fringe definitely did not fall into that category.

I’ve decided to try something a little different with my reviews this season: last season I Click to visit Fringe on 20th Century Fox Studios!wrote a recap followed by my thoughts on the episode, but, for this review at least, I thought I’d just jump right into my thoughts on the assumption that if you’re reading this, chances are pretty good that you’ve seen the premiere. And if you haven’t, I’d highly recommend that you stop reading right now and go watch it!

    Thoughts and Impressions

Ever since news on season 3 started to trickle out this summer after filming started, one of the things I’ve been really excited about was the idea of the show running two parallel storylines concurrently; that is, alternating episodes focusing on Our Side one week, and on Theirs the next. I know that some people weren’t happy about this idea given that it means that we’ll see less of “our” team, but I think that Olivia shows just how great this season could be.

I think that the best thing about the alternating episodes is that it affords the time to properly flesh out the Other Side as well as allowing us to really get to know the Alternates. Leading up to the premiere there were several pre-reviews written by various journalists and I didn’t read a single one that didn’t mention how great Andre Royo was as Henry Higgins, and I most definitely agree: the dynamic between Olivia and Henry was one of my favourite aspects of the episode.

Olivia’s desperation was certainly palpable all throughout this episode, and I think her treatment of Henry highlighted that. We’ve never seen her blatantly threaten someone who is, for all intents and purposes, an innocent; granted, she’s never really been put in such a position before. I thought it was fascinating to see him begin to trust her as the episode progressed and he realized that there was really something to her story, that she wasn’t just a crazy lady in a hospital gown with a gun.

“I’m not insane. I’m not who they say I am” – Olivia

Just days before the premiere aired, I was discussing the Fringe alter-verse with a friend and we were wondering about whether they have Star Wars Over There. I was therefore quite amused when Henry confirmed the existence of the franchise on the Other Side with his comment about Olivia’s freakishly good memory for numbers and facts. This is something that was established back in season 1, and is part of the reason that Olivia was so disconcerted by the discovery that she was a participant in the Cortexiphan trials: she has absolutely no memory of it, whereas she remembers everything else about her life.

Speaking of the Cortexiphan trials, I’m hoping that they will somehow come into play with the treatment that Walternate had AltBrandon administer. We know that the drug acted on the brain of the Cortexiphan kids, and given that Olivia has now had her mind further manipulated with the memory treatment (which I’ll come back to in a little bit), I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some sort of interaction. This is certainly not the first time we’ve seen Liv’s consciousness messed with: in season 1 we saw her struggling to figure out which were her own memories and which belonged to John Scott. In case you’ve forgotten, Liv was trying to save his life and shared consciousness with him, and in the process some of his memories were transferred to her own. As things progressed, Liv’s mind began to purge Scott’s memories because they weren’t her own, and I wonder if something similar might begin to happen with the implanted memories from AltLiv.

“Sometimes you just gotta believe in what you can’t see” – Andre Royo as Henry Arliss Higgins

Given that Henry seemed to care enough about what happened to Olivia that he stayed outside her mother’s house even after she told him it was okay to leave, I think it’s a fair bet to say that we’ll see him again (well, that and the fact that it was announced that Andre Royo will be back on Fringe). I’m hoping that he’ll be one of the people who helps Olivia remember who she really is, especially given some of his parting words to her. I think that he noticed her starting to change as the memory treatment started to take hold during their quest to get Liv home and already suspected that there was something weird going on.

    Amy Madigan as Marilyn Dunham

One thing (among many) that continually impresses me about Fringe is the calibre of the guest stars. It’s one thing to have guests who are playing one-off characters, but there have been a couple times when they’ve brought in someone to portray a new character to us, but someone who has an established relationship with someone on the team. For example, Orla Brady, who was heartbreakingly believable as Elizabeth Bishop. Well, Fringe seems to be right on the money with casting mothers on the show, because Amy Madigan was absolutely perfect as Marilyn Dunham. It impressed me how genuine Anna Torv and Amy Madigan were able to make the scenes between mother and daughter.

The level of desperation on Olivia’s mother’s part is completely understandable when you remember that Rachel Dunham died in childbirth on the Other Side. For a mother who has already lost one daughter and an unborn granddaughter, the very real possibility of losing her only remaining daughter had to be especially scary.

We found out back in Over There: part 2 that on the Other Side, Olivia’s mother is still alive. We’d known for a while that Olivia lost her mother, but to my recollection this was the first time we learned that Liv was only 14 at the time. This makes me even more intrigued about her past given that at that age, she still would have been a minor, so what happened to her and Rachel after? I assume that Olivia’s father was killed when she was younger – we know that he was military – as Marilyn remarried an abusive man whom Olivia then shot when she was only 9 years old. I would like to learn more about Marilyn Dunham’s past Over There: did she remarry after Olivia’s father died?

    Path of Least Resistance

I know that AltBrandon said that it was the adrenaline from her escape that triggered Olivia’s memory treatment, but I find it telling that we saw it finally take hold in her mother’s house. In an interview with Anna Torv in which she discusses her Alternate mother, she mentions that Olivia took the “path of least resistance”, and I think that this is my favourite way of looking at it so far. Olivia has had to be strong for so long, starting as far back as the Cortexiphan trials. Bell told her that she was the strongest of all the children, and from there she only went on to have to shoulder more weight, to have to always be the protector. I assume that Olivia had at least been captive Over There for several weeks, if not months (AltCharlie’s hair is significantly longer), and she seems to have been undergoing fairly regular treatment/torture sessions; I think that she was running on her last reserves, and to come face-to-face with her mother and have to face the realization that she does have unfamiliar memories in her head, she just gave in. I’m choosing to think of this as ceding the battle to fight the war.

One thing I found particularly fascinating was being able to track the differences between Olivia and Altliv throughout the episode and as the memory treatment began to take hold. At the beginning of the episode, Olivia is clearly Olivia, with all the familiar mannerisms we’ve seen Anna Torv imbue her with in the last two seasons; yet throughout the progression of the episode, as the “treatment” began to kick in, there were little things, like mannerisms, that started to feel off, or bigger things, like when Olivia said “Frank” instead of “Peter”, or when she made a shot that she thought she shouldn’t have been able to make.

This was actually something that bothered me when I first watched the episode, because we have seen our Olivia make some pretty incredible shots in the past. But in the gas station scene when Olivia is shooting every single one of her shots is dead-on, and she’s shooting with one hand only. Our Liv sometimes shoots with just one hand, but the majority of the time she shoots with both; on the other hand, AltLivia seems to prefer to just shoot with one hand. Not to mention the fact that she drops two agents with debilitating shots through an SUV, and then she manages to shoot the gauge on a gas tank while hanging out the window of a moving car. So, on second thought, it is no wonder that Olivia was disconcerted.

When Olivia is at her “safehouse”, and makes the switch to AltLiv, it continues to amaze me that the switch is so apparent, and yet the only thing that has changed is the way the characters are being portrayed. I like that this episodes builds on the differences that we saw between Olivia and AltLiv in the finale. Olivia is much more vulnerable, in a sense, as she tends to carry the weight of the world on her shoulders, but AltLiv, even though we know she’s had tragedy in her life, is much more outgoing, even appears more confident. Even though we’ll be seeing it because our Liv has been mind-wiped (for now), I’m looking forward to seeing more of AltLiv’s relationship with Lincoln and AltCharlie.

“Somehow she is equipped to move through universes. We need her to help us understand this skill” – John Noble as Secretary Bishop

Much as I loved this episode – always fun to see Olivia kicking ass and taking names – I did have a couple issues with it, though only one of them really bugged me. One thing that confused me a little bit, considering how well Lincoln and Charlie seem to think they know AltLiv, is that they would more readily believe that their Olivia had a psychotic break rather than assuming that the two Olivias hadn’t actually switched in the first place. I mean, I get that they’d not exactly have a reason to distrust Walternate and their Broyles, but I can’t help but think that if Peter and our Fringe Division were told that their Olivia had had a “psychotic break” they would fight tooth and nail to be able to see her and not believe it for a second.

I know the term “Occam’s Razor” gets thrown around a lot, but doesn’t it make infinitely more sense that rather than their Liv having a psychotic break and being convinced she wasn’t from their universe, she would actually not be from their universe? Especially when you consider that they had just encountered our team from another world?

For someone as smart as Walternate, there is, I believe, a flaw in his reasoning. He tells Brandon that they need Olivia to help them understand how she is able to move safely between worlds and to that end they have gone to great lengths to convince her that she is their Olivia. But their Olivia had had no experiences travelling between worlds and would have no recollections of having done so. It would only be as our Olivia that she could give them the information, and to tap into those memories would be acknowledging that she isn’t their Olivia in the first place, which would defeat the purpose of the whole exercise.

Speaking of the memory treatment, this is where my biggest issue with the episode lies: the explanation we are given for the treatment itself is, well, not at all plausible. Don’t get me wrong, I know that the show is called Fringe for a reason, and I’m generally pretty forgiving about some of the more nit-picky science details because you have to allow for some wiggle room, and it is science fiction. But here is the problem: it is not at all plausible to expect that transfusing someone with B lymphocytes, a component of the immune system, could in any way transfer memories. Okay, so specifying that they are “memory” B lymphocytes is clever, but it’s just twisting words.

“The adrenaline triggered our Olivia’s memory B lymphocytes. It carried them across the blood-brain barrier and successfully transferred the memories”  – Ryan McDonald as AltBrandon

Memory B lymphocytes are named thusly because they are part of the immune system that is adaptive and “remember” antigens: this is rather a simplistic explanation, but once they come in contact with a certain antigen (i.e. a virus), they later “remember” that antigen and are able to quickly set in motion the production of antibodies rather than waiting for a slower initial immune response. (For anyone else who has more of a science background, yes, I do know that this is a vastly simplified version of the process).

This is the way vaccines work: they expose us to an antigen without the live virus so that our adaptive immune system is primed should we later encounter that same organism. Memory B lymphocytes are in no way at all related to the neural kind of memory. And yes, B lymphocytes can cross the blood-brain barrier, but they do so to participate in an immune response, not to rewrite memories.

I just wish that rather than an immune vehicle, the memory treatment had had some neural component instead. It would have been more plausible to me to have had the treatment involve some sort of exposure to electricity as neuronal firing in the brain is electricity, and technically the neural pathways in the brain could be rewritten that way.

Our Olivia is now a…second AltLivia

However, taking the treatment in the spirit it was intended, I am curious to see what will happen with Olivia’s memories now. Given the plasticity of the brain, it isn’t entirely implausible that you could do a mass rewrite of someone’s memories (given the right technology, of course), but the brain is very, very redundant: even if you wrote over the initial memories, I’d lay odds that you would see latencies from the original set of memories.

It’s as if you took a painting and painted over the original picture: if you carefully scrape off the new layer of paint, the old layer is still there, and if the integrity of the new layer is threatened, the original layer of paint shines through. This is sort of how I’d compare the memory treatment: our Olivia is still in there somewhere, and I think that very quickly we will be seeing her realizing that something is off.

One thing that I love about Fringe (one of the many, many things), is that it prompts the most interesting discussions. I’ve had some rather intriguing ones about the ethics of what Walternate did, exactly. Given that Walternate administered a treatment that would rewrite Olivia’s personality completely and, supposedly, completely subsume all her own original memories, he has in effect killed our Olivia. At least for the time being. Walternate really does make it difficult to like him, doesn’t he?

“Why convince her she’s our Olivia Dunham? Why is that necessary?” – Lance Reddick as Colonel Broyles

Ever since we first met the Alternates from Over There, I have liked them, despite myself: after all, they are variations on the characters that we’ve come to know and love over the last two seasons. And I really don’t think that They are evil, even if Walternate does a pretty good impression sometimes. But the thing about Walternate that is readily apparent is that he is a hard man, a soldier. He is doing what he believes he must in order to save his world from these invaders, and I don’t think that you can fault him for that. Well, maybe you can, but I think that he has simply been in the “war” mentality for so long that he has lost sight of morality.

Seems like both he and Walter could use a lesson in ethics, come to think of it. But obviously not everyone agrees with Secretary Bishop, evidenced by the protestors of Amberization, and I think that Colonel Broyles believes that what Walternate is doing is wrong. I have this hope that as the next couple episodes progress Col. Broyles will help our Olivia get back to our world. Or, at least, help her realize that she really doesn’t belong Over There and that she isn’t remembering her own memories, but AltLivia’s. Perhaps Olivia will be starting to realize that something is off and Broyles will just tip the scales.

    Alternate Fringe Division

What I do know is that I don’t want Olivia’s brainwashing to last for too long: it was one thing when she was trapped on the other side and we were seeing Over There through her eyes. It is quite another if we’ll be seeing AltLivia on both teams. Much as I like her (and yes, I do like AltLivia, even if The Box gave me slight pause on that front), I’ll miss our Olivia if she remains brainwashed for too long.

Speaking of AltLivia on Our Side, I enjoyed the first real glimpse of her interactions with Walter. I was quite curious to see how she would treat him given that she knows Walternate, who is a very different man. This last scene was yet another that made me wonder about the time frame in terms of how long it has been since they crossed over to the Other Side: I can’t imagine the Senate committee would let them wait for too long to take Peter’s statement, but I assumed that it has at least been weeks for Olivia on the other side, so perhaps they are not entirely time-synched.

Walter Bishop (John Noble) and AltLivia (Anna Torv)

On a last note, even though, yes, I did nitpick a bit, I really did love this episode. Fantastic start to the season, and I couldn’t have asked for a better premiere. Not that I expected it to disappoint: I’d seen them filming a bit around the city and everything always looked epic, so I was very much looking forward to seeing the finished product.
