Maya is the third episode of season three of La Brea. The episode makes an important pivot in the story arc for viewers to learn more about an individual named Maya Schmidt (Claudia Ware) and how this development impacts the series final episodes. Maya is the person responsible for Gavin’s (Eoin Macken) memory loss because he became aware of a time travel military operation to 10,000 BC during the time he and Levi (Nicholas Gonzales) were in the Air Force together in their past lives in the future of the twenty first century.

As we will discover, Maya, military code named “Sierra“, apparently has misgivings about the orders she received to erase portions of Gavin’s memory that caused him to suffer visions and hallucinations that led to his bouts with alcohol abuse and estrangement from his friends and family.

A real question viewers should contemplate is whether Gavin should trust Maya at all?

In this episode Maya apparently seeks out Gavin in 10,000 BC to correct the wrongdoings she imposed on his life as well as planning to infiltrate the military base where it is suspected that Levi, Petra (Asmara Feik) and perhaps Eve (Natalie Zea) are being held hostage in an unknown time period.

On a parallel time track in 2021, viewers will recall that Ty (Chiké Okonkwo) was sucked into a wormhole portal aurora that sent him to early September 2021 where he links up with Sam (Jon Seda) and Gavin prior to the wormhole sinkhole as originally depicted in the pilot episode. Their mission is to locate and infiltrate the secret military Time Travel Facility base in 2021 that may be at the center of all the time disturbances.

Major outstanding questions exist in the time periods encompassing the third season. First is whether Eve, Levi and Petra are prisoner in 10,000 BC or has the military used a wormhole portal at their Time Travel Facility to take them, and perhaps others Back To The Future? Second is will Ty, Gavin and Sam in 2021 be able to rescue their family and friends without adversely affecting realities across time?

Much like the famous Back To The Future film trilogy where changes made in the past changed the future, an important consideration is will our heroes make changes in the past that will cause irrevocable changes rippling through time affecting the future forever?

Or is it that whatever happens is what was supposed to occur, therefore not disrupting the future timelines. Could it be that changes made in the future of 2021 (prior to the events in the pilot episode) result in the wormhole time portal sinkholes never happening in the first place? Whatever direction creator David Appelbaum will ultimately choose will be revealed over the course of the remaining episodes of La Brea!

    Maya:

La Brea S3x03 Gavin and Sam from 2021 with Ty from 10,000 BC
Image by Mark Taylor courtesy NBC

The third episode of season three was written by Rob Wright and directed by Cherie Nowlan opening with 2021 pre wormhole Sam and Gavin at a coffee shop restaurant with Ty from 10,000 BC where the three are discussing how to infiltrate the secret time travel military base to obtain answers on how they can save their family and friends trapped in 10,000 BC.

2021 Gavin, still suffering from gaps in his memory, says he doesn’t remember any secret program he was involved with about quantum physics (time travel) or anything else for that matter, although Gavin says he has been on the base “1,000 times”.

La Brea S3x03 Ty and Sam realize Gavin is not in the restroom
Image by Mark Taylor courtesy NBC

Ty assures Gavin that his 10,000 BC self was recalling details about the base and they must proceed there to find the connection to the wormhole portal auroras that have caused this disaster stating “the lives of the people you love depend on this”.

Gavin says he needs use the restroom and excuses himself. Actually Gavin is suffering from alcohol withdrawals and escapes to go find some booze. Ty and Sam end up having to track Gavin down. Naturally, they find Gavin in a local bar drinking.

La Brea S3x03 Gavin makes a map in 10,000 BC to find the military base

Back in 10,000 BC, Gavin is drawing a map from the village fort to the military air base for Sam and Scott (Rohan Mirchananey). Telling them it’s the only action open to them if they hope to find Maya, Eve, Levi, Petra, as well as Riley (Veronica St. Clair) and Josh (Jack Martin) who jumped into the dual colored, dual time travel destination aurora wormhole portal in an attempt to get to a hospital somewhere in time to save Riley who had been wounded by a Velociraptor in the season opening episode “Sierra“.

It must be mentioned in our analysis that the cinematography of all the 10,000 BC episodes have been and still are superb. Each is replete with beautiful scenes of the wilderness of Australia where much of the series was filmed.

These scenes, in conjunction with realistic dinosaurs and the time travel portals make the series a wonder to behold each week that many viewers, including this editor, will certainly miss.

Gavin and Sam assure Scott that their mission is only reconnaissance at this point heading out from the safety of the village fort to perform their task of locating the mysterious time travel military base which appears to have been the root cause of all the troubles our hero survivors have experienced.

La Brea S3x03 Giant rhino charges Gavin and Sam

Speaking of dinosaurs, on the route to the time travel military base that Gavin has pieced together from returning memory fragments, he and Sam encounter a huge prehistoric rhinoceros that is intent on stomping them to smithereens!

Running for their lives, the only thing that saves them is that they unknowingly enter a minefield, one of which explodes, killing the rhino thereby saving their lives. The good news is that they are on the right track because only a military base would require minefields as a defensive perimeter.

La Brea S3x03 Gavin and Sam find a path through the minefield

Fortunately, Gavin and Sam find a safe path through the minefield thanks to someone who left stacked stones marking a pathway out.

The bad news is the minefield explosion apparently alerts members of the secret time travel program from the military base. Unfortunately this is precisely what happens when military helicopters are soon observed overhead followed by ground troops who easily capture Sam and Gavin holding them at gunpoint and tying them to a tree.

La Brea S3x03 10,000 BC Ty seeks out his wife in 2021

Back To The Future in 2021 Ty seeks out his estranged wife Sophie (Annabelle Stephenson) who wants nothing to do with him. The encounter reinforces Ty’s resolve to do the right thing to correct his past mistakes of criticizing her, blaming her for their marriage problems.

Viewers cannot help but wonder if Ty of the past will be able to repair his own challenges with his wife of the future? We shall learn more about Ty and Sophie later in the episode.

La Brea S3x03 Gavin in 2021 decides to face his past and help Ty

Meanwhile Ty and 2021 Sam locate Gavin who plans on boozing it up in a local bar rather than face the difficult choice of infiltration of the time travel base.

Ty shares a story from his past that caused a disaster for his wife in the future but is unable to get her to listen to him any longer.

Gavin agrees to attend an alcoholic anonymous meeting where Ty’s wife will be to share a story in the AA meeting that will change her life for the better.

La Brea S3x03 Ruth tells Veronica she should be on the council

Segue to 10,000 BC where we are with soon to be parents Veronica (Lily Santiago) and Lucas (Josh McKenzie) who are chatting about Lucas’s desire to join Ruth (Chantelle Jamieson) in the village fort leadership council.

Viewers will recall that Veronica and Lucas are planning on staying in the past since neither had much of a future in 2021. Interestingly, Ruth believes Veronica is a leader and suggests she join the village fort council which at first does not sit well with Lucas. Later Lucas realizes his selfishness and embraces the idea.

La Brea S3x03 Maya tells Gavin she was going to be a whistleblower

Back to Gavin and Sam tied to a tree, Maya also heard the landmine explosion and has been watching them the entire time when they were captured in 10,000 BC by armed soldiers from the time travel military base located nearby.

Cutting Gavin and Sam loose, Maya is as surprised to see Gavin as he is seeing her. For some reason not delineated at this time Maya decides to share details of the military weaponizing the use of time travel to be able to control events in history to their liking.

La Brea S3x03 Gavin drinks Mayas elixer to remember what was erased

Gavin, having learned too much about the military use of time travel was subjected to biological memory erasure by Maya to keep the dark secret from being revealed to anyone. Maya, disgusted with the corruption of the powerful time travel secret military program, says that she planned on becoming a whistleblower but was captured with her daughter Petra and sent to 10,000 BC for imprisonment to keep their military secrets safe.

Gavin shares with Maya that he has had fragments of his memory return about why the military are tampering with past history timelines. Maya then shares that she may be able to restore Gavin’s memory before they enter the time travel base in 10,000 BC.

La Brea S3x03 Izzy takes care of Gavin after the Psilocybin
Image by Mark Taylor courtesy NBC

Maya further reveals that she is an expert in psychology operations. She makes Gavin an elixir of potentially poisonous Psilocybin mushrooms to expand his mind thereby unlocking his memories.

Gavin drinks the mixture causing a flood of memories related to his classified time travel military operations that includes the dual colored wormhole portal and a digital safe combination where an advanced computer chip that controls time travel is located. Gavin passes out and is taken to the village fort to recover.

La Brea S3x03 Izzy and Leyla become more than friends
Image by Mark Taylor courtesy NBC

In a side story, we are with Leyla (Edyll Ismail) and Izzy (Zyra Gorecki) who have bonded as result of survivor the pterodactyls together in the previous episode “Don’t Look Up“.  This teamwork is a factor that will become important when a prehistoric boar attacks them and Leyla becomes trapped in a tar pit which the series namesake is famous for.

Fortunately, both escaped, further strengthening their bond of friendship that serves them well later when the boar returns and they work together to kill the beast. In the end it becomes apparent that Leyla and Izzy are becoming more than friends.

La Brea S3x03 Gavin attends AA to encourage Tys wife to seek another path

At the bar in 2021, Ty and Sam convince Gavin to help infiltrate the secret time travel military base with Ty using psychological techniques of Ty’s mistakes with his wife to encourage him. Gavin overcomes his fears and addiction when Ty shares that it was his own failures that forced his wife to drink excessively and drive, ultimately putting an innocent victim into a coma when she had an drunken auto accident.

The story stuns Gavin back to reality. Sam, Ty and Gavin head out to infiltrate the secret time travel military base but first stop by an alcoholics anonymous meeting helping Ty’s wife avoid the drunken auto accident.

La Brea S3x03 Gavin Sam and Maya are convinced someone wants Gavins time travel memories

As the episode approaches the end, we are in 10,000 BC with Sam, Izzy and Maya as Gavin regains consciousness from his mind expanding experience that helped him regain more of his erased memories.

Sam, Gavin and Maya come to the conclusion that whoever is behind all this wants the information that has been locked up in Gavin’s mind. All of them vow to find out who it is and why in the future while they are in 10,000 BC.

La Brea S3x03 Sam wishes his ex wife good luck in the future

The final sequence finds us Ty in 2021 after he helps his ex-wife Sophie decide to seek therapy saving her from the horrible automobile accident in the original timeline.

They hug and Ty wishes her good luck in the future, now that she has a future to live again.

Viewers feel good about this development knowing that Ty has corrected one of the nightmares from his life that has plagued him for a long time. More importantly, Ty has changed the future. What are the ramifications of Ty altering the future? We simply do not know yet.

La Brea S3x03 Helena is following Gavin Ty and Sam in 2021

Gavin, Sam and Ty head towards the secret time travel military base. Unknown to them, they are being followed by an enigmatic woman named Helena played by famous Australian actress Emily Wiseman in a guest starring role.

All of this leaves the task of infiltration of the secret bases in 10,000 BC and 2021 until next weeks episode called “Fire Storm”. See you then!

La Brea Review The Great Escape – Consequences Be Damned!

    Hello La Brea fans!

    La Brea Season 2 Poster

My understanding of La Brea started when I visited the famous tar pits in Los Angeles decades ago. I also remember watching a television show called Land of the Lost, which had a slightly different story about alternate universes. For centuries there was a theory of Hollow Earth, as proposed by John Cleves Symmes Jr, in which he theorized that a hollow earth can be habitable by plants, animals, and even humans. Sound familiar?

Well, that’s precisely what we see in the La Brea episode The Great Escape, written by Arika Lisanne Mittman and directed by David M. Barrett.

No doubt named after the famous 1963 movie, the situation for our wormhole sinkhole survivor’s becomes more harrowing than you would think. How hard is it to escape Middle Earth? We soon find out that it can be a lot harder than assumed. What would you do in a situation that has dire consequences?

La Brea S2x03 The local natives who believe in the Sky People
Images by Sarah Enticknap, courtesy NBC

What I find interesting about La Brea is the use of the term Sky People since most Indigenous tribes in North America attribute that name to another term like Star People.  Aliens or their gods that have come to earth in human form for the greater good, or to teach lessons or skills of some kind.

I also find it interesting how we in modern times have it so easy with our luxuries that when we are thrust into a situation where we would have to fend for ourselves, would you survive? Most of us are not equipped to handle not having things at our fingertips readily, and that can be a scary thought. It also shows that no matter who we are in society, when we encroach or, in the case of the characters in this series, get sucked into a situation that they did not create, no one is better. Working together is the only solution to get out of a problem.

    The Great Escape:

La Brea S2x03 Eve and Levi hug each other and plan their escape

The episode opens with Eve (Natalie Zea) and Levi (Nicholas Gonzales) hugging each other hoping they can find some way to escape with the help of Virgil (Greg Hatton). What they don’t know yet is that Gavin (Eoin Macken) is outside being indoctrinated by The Exiles to mine the mysterious black ore as we discussed in our review and analysis of last weeks episode “The Cave”. When Eve sees Gavin working in a quarry, she is too stunned to go see him at first, then is happy reuniting with him. Levi  is happy to see his friend too.  After discovering how he ended up in 10,000 BC, they begin to plan their escape in earnest.

La Brea S2x03 Sam discusses living off the land with Ty

As I suspected, Sam (Jon Seda) suggests that the group lives off the land “as humans have been doing for thousands of years.”

I always find it fascinating when humans are thrust into a situation completely outside their “comfort zone” and how they handle it. Can they dig their heels in, roll their sleeves, and get to work? Or will they complain and whine and not survive? It is a true testament to “only the strong survive” Would you do it? Would you be able to fend for yourself like they are forced to do?

La Brea S2x03 Paara confronts Ty about Silas

Paara (Tonantzin Carmelo) confronts Ty (Chiké Okonkwo) about where Silas (Mark Lee) is. Paara says that Silas must pay for his past actions.

With Silas nowhere in sight, Paara punishes them by taking away their food. If I were part of those prisoners, I would have hidden some food away, just in case something like this happened.

La Brea S2x03 The group deals with the reality of having their food taken

The group is deadlocked in a debate on how they should proceed. Do they go and steal back their food from a heavily armed and skilled tribe, or should they not and survive by living off the land? The fact that stealing as an option is brought up by Lucas (Josh McKenzie) is interesting, considering that it is a knee-jerk reaction to that situation. Instead of reasoning about what to do, his instinct is to take back the food they were given.

La Brea S2x03 Lucas Scott and Veronica on a mission to steal food

With resentment at a high level amongst more than a few in the group, Lucas, Scott (Rohan Mirchandaney), and Veronica (Lily Santiago) decide to ignore the vote to not raid Paara’s tribe and set out to steal back the food; the consequences be damned!

Viewers and I are not sure how good of an idea this really is, considering that Scott, Veronica and Lucas are only three people who have no skills against an army of skilled, armed warriors.

La Brea S2x03 Eve Levi and Gavin escape but are captured again

Gavin, Levi, and Eve use the map Silas gave to Gavin to find their way back. As skeptical as Eve and Levi are of Silas and his motives, they must trust Gavin and his faith in Silas. Would Silas purposefully lead them astray? Is Levi’s plan to wait until the guard shift changes a better plan? Risk is involved with both methods; it is up to them to choose which suits them better and which will help them in the long run. In theory, it should work, but reality tends to slap you in the face when you are staring down the very people you are running from. Outnumbered and skilled, the prisoners are once again bested by their captors. Man’s ego tends to put him in unfortunate predicaments that usually end up not going as planned.

La Brea S2x03 Scott Veronica and Lucas find the village

Veronica, Scott, and Lucas make it to the village and devise a plan to sneak into the compound and find the food and steal it back. Again, scenarios like this usually go awry when not thought out properly. It’s man’s arrogance that he can outsmart people in their element.

Scott had another plan in mind; he seemed to have an ulterior motive. As Lucas and Veronica sneak around to find the food, Lucas sees the man who killed his mother (Karina Logue). With that distraction now forefront of his mind, he has all but abandoned the task he set out to do initially, again risking Veronica’s life in the process. Scott’s motive is soon revealed as he enters a hut and looks for something Silas left behind. Upon finding the object, Scott’s mission is complete.

La Brea S2x03 Gavin returns to Eve from solitary confinement

Gavin’s sacrifice of taking the blame for the coup landed him alone in a cell. Somehow, he managed to survive and reunite with Eve and Levi. Reminiscing how Eve and he met, Gavin reveals that he knows about Levi and Eve. He does not seem mad about it but understands. He cannot be angry in this situation as he will need to rely on both of them to help get out of the problem they are all in. His wish of wanting to start over may not happen, considering Eve’s feelings for Levi and what transpired between the two of them in an earlier episode. I am sure the writers will somehow figure this out, as this trope is typical on shows like this. Eve may be left with the dilemma of choosing between two men; of course, that will also be hard because resentment, while not voiced, may still be a part of the outcome.

La Brea -S2x03 Scoot makes it back to the clearing

Making it back to the encampment unseen and fully stocked with food, Lucas, Scott, and Veronica must answer the group’s questions and explain why they disobeyed the majority vote. Veronica asks Lucas why he did not go through with killing the man that killed his mother; his answer is not surprising. Lucas saw the man with his family made him remember his father. During times of war and conflict, it is often forgotten that those we are fighting against have people who love them and will miss them. There are innocent people always involved. They are the ones that suffer the most. It reminds me of a quote from Platoon “the first casualty of war is innocence.” The theft of the food will have consequences that will affect not only Lucas but all the others in the clearing.

La Brea S2x01 Silas refuses to cooperate

Silas is the one person who is the focus of this episode without actually being in this episode. He is the catalyst for everything that has happened. From the map to the object that Scott found.

Curious about what plans will be put in place to get Josh (Jack Martin) and Riley (Veronica St. Clair) back? With Gavin, Eve, and Levi’s escape is solidified when they over power the guard at the exit on Silas’ map. Unfortunately, Virgil and all the others are in The Cave still enslaved by The Exiles. Gavin informs Eve that Izzy (Zyra Gorecki) has come with him, and Eve runs to find her. They are reunited at last! I guess The Great Escape was worth it after all!

La Brea S2x03 Rebecca meets Scott after his secret mission

In future episodes we will see what happens with Rebecca (Ming-Zhu Hii) who sent Scott who on a secret mission for to obtain a device in Silas’ home in order to get into the Time Travel Tower facility.

Rebecca says she can help Riley and Josh get reunited with the rest of the group, or will they be trapped in 1988 to become the people that Kenn has theorized about in “The Next Day”? There is still the mystery of what the rock the prisoners are mining is used for and why it is so precious.

“The Great Escape” changed the lives of all of them; we will have to wait and see what happens next week in episode 4 “The Fog” at NBC!

Welcome Back La Brea and Wormhole Time Travel Science Fiction Lovers!

The second episode contains important considerations about the story arc we knew about from events that occurred in the first episode of this season and during the last episodes of season one before proceeding with our analysis of “The Cave”, Team WHR will continue to review our series character development discussions.

After we learned that Gavin (Eoin Macken) is definitely the older version of the younger Isaiah (Diesel La Torraca) as we discovered in the final episodes of season one which was confirmed when Isiah went through the 10,000 BC wormhole sinkhole in “Topanga” and was spotted by Josh (Jack Martin) and Izzy (Zyra Gorecki) getting into the station wagon in 1988 with the nuns that raised him during “The Next Day“.

Viewers will recall the nuns ultimately will put Isaiah up for adoption, to ensure that, unknown to the nuns that he becomes Gavin.

La Brea S2x01 Silas refuses to cooperate
Images by Sarah Enticknap courtesy NBC

In the second season of La Brea it appears that Silas (Mark Lee) will play a larger role as evidenced in “The Cave”. Viewers will recall that Silas was defiant with everyone. His efforts to stop Isaiah from getting to the future to become Gavin despite the consequences to the timeline were manaical. Therefore his larger role was expected since Silas told Isiah “until we meet again”.

What is interesting to contemplate however is the what if Isaiah had not been time travel transported to 1988 to become Gavin. Beyond Josh and Izzy never being born, would Gavin have simply disappeared in the future? This factor has become a moot point since it is now clear that Isiah was always going to make it to 1988 since Gavin never become ill in the future like Izzy in the future and Josh in 10,000 BC when their existence was threatened by Silas’ selfish actions.

La Brea S2x01 Veronica is captured

Lilly (Chloe De Los Santos), who successfully made it to the Topanga wormhole to 1988, became Ella (Michelle Vergara Moore). During this episode, a poignant reunion occurs with Veronica (Lilly Santiago) after she is rescued by Eve (Natalie Zea) and Levi (Nicholas Gonzalez) from a group of miscreants known as The Exiles. Of particular import is that in doing so, Eve is captured with Levi surrendering himself to these bad guys in order to fulfill a promise to Eve that he will protect her. This factor becomes one of the central story arcs in “The Cave”.

The other major story arcs that are explored are Josh’s and Riley’s (Veronica St. Clair) time travel adventure in 1988 were they meet an unusual character named Franklin March (Byron Coll) and the arrival of Gavin, Izzy and Ella at the survivor’s camp where bittersweet incidents occur. Each of these scenarios excellently set the foundation for the time travel adventures that we will experience in season two!

    The Cave:

La Brea S2x02 Eve and Levi are imprisoned

The second episode of La Brea was directed by Adam Davidson. “The Cave” written by series creator David Appelbaum and Rob Wright with an opening sequence that finds Eve and Levi imprisoned by The Exiles in a wagon headed for “The Cave”. Eve has a flashback to the time when she and Levi were having an affair.

Eve breaks down in tears when Levi asks where Gavin is? “You know where Gavin is, he’s come home drunk every night this week, I don’t know what to do anymore”. Eve and Levi also discuss their guilt feelings regarding their affair.

La Brea S2x02 The Exiles slave campThe scene shifts back to the wagon as it arrives at a barricaded stockade surrounding “The Cave”.

Here we learn that the place is filled with slaves who are forced to mine something of value in 10,000 BC that is not disclosed at this time.

Eve and Levi are shoved inside a gated entrance in what looks like a hellhole with the guards beating the slaves, including Eve when she asks a simple question!

La Brea S2x02 Gavin, Izzy and Ella enter the encampment

We move to Doctor Sam (Jon Seda) meeting Gavin, Izzy and Ella as they enter the survivor’s encampment in the clearing. Gavin confesses that he is really the older version of Isaiah. Sam does not believe this until Gavin proves it by showing Sam the scar on his hand that Sam mended last season when he was young Isaiah.

Ty (Chiké Okonkwo), Lucas (Josh McKenzie), Judah (Damien Fotiou) are all astounded when Ty asks Gavin “How did you get here”. Gavin proceeds telling the blockbuster tale of their journey through the wormhole sinkhole in Seattle that deposited the three of them in the Los Angeles area not too far from La Brea. Gavin and Izzy become distraught when they learn that Eve and Levi have been captured.

La Brea S2x02 Sam tells Gavin that Josh and Riley have been sent to 1988

Things go from bad to worse when Izzy, Ella and Gavin learn from Sam that Riley and Josh were sucked into the time portal at the same time as Isaiah and Lilly were sent to 1988 in the “Topanga” episode with Lilly growing up to become Ella. Ty hugs Ella as Judah says “This is officially insane”.

Gavin learns that Silas is in the camp, vowing to force Silas to find The Exiles, and that Scott (Rohan Mirchandaney) and Rebecca (Ming-Zhu Hii) have been missing for some time. Viewers will recall that Scott and Rebecca left the camp, ultimately finding the time travel facility built by Rebecca in 10,000 BC that the survivor’s know nothing about at this juncture. Silas recognized Gavin as Isaiah and promises to help him find Eve and Levi.

La Brea S2x02 Riley and Josh at Santa Monica beach

We segue to Riley and Josh who are at the 1988 site of the Hollywood hills wormhole sinkhole. The entire area has been cordoned off by a veritable army of police.

Josh wants to simply jump the barriers and enter the time portal to rejoin their families in 10,000 BC. Riley talks him out of it saying they will get arrested and they should return under the cover of darkness when it will be easier to elude the authorities.

It is at this time that Franklin Marsh overhears Riley and Josh’s suspicious conversational behavior deciding to follow them to Santa Monica beach where they are enjoying some food and each others company while they plan to return to return to their families in 10,000 BC.

La Brea S2x02 Eve and Levi discuss their horrible situation

Subsequent to Eve being beaten by The Exiles guards inside the mine, she and Levi are talking about their horrible situation when they meet a man named Virgil (Greg Hatton).

Virgil shares that he, along with many others in the mine, also fell through the original time portal at the La Brea tar pits. All of whom were eventually captured by The Exiles to be used as slave laborers to mine a mysterious black rocks that are the object focus of their enslavement.

    La Brea S2x02 Psilomelane image

It becomes clear at this point the black rock being sought and mined, based on it’s appearance in the episode, is likely Psilomelane embedded in Magnetite. Often called called lodestones, Magnetite was used in early compasses. Both ores are a manganese type of ore, often with a black crystalline composition. Both are generally used in jewelry making and more importantly are ores known for their industrial uses.

This leads to an important question; Where in 10,000 BC would anyone need such industrial use ores? The answer is at the time travel facility built by Rebecca in 10,000 BC! The Exiles are obviously working for whoever took control of the facility from Rebecca. Viewers will remember that she has indicated they will kill her if she is caught by them inside the facility she built. The question is why?

The remainder of the episode story arc breaks down into three critical sub plot areas that will become the focus in future episodes.

Riley and Josh confront Franklin who followed them from the time portal near the Hollywood sign that fell into the wormhole sinkhole to the piers at Santa Monica.

Franklin confesses that he overheard them talking about the portal, and that he is being ridiculed by his peers at University of California for his research that more sinkhole wormholes.

Franklin shares his research details with Riley and Josh that more wormhole sinkhole time portals will be opening off the coast of Santa Monica near Catalina Island that will cause a tsunami tidal wave flooding potentially destroying several coastal cities in Southern California.

Riley and Josh decide to not return to 10,000 BC and instead will help Franklin avert the impending disaster that is projected by Franklin to happen in four days.

Silas takes Gavin to find The Exiles admitting that Gavin’s parents were killed in 10,000 BC. Silas earns Gavin’s trust when he saves Gavin from being eaten by a huge prehistoric bear after being snared in a trap that leaves him hanging upside down from a tree. Silas then surprises Gavin when he gives him a map of The Cave complex that he will need to save Eve and Levi, but saying that he must go on alone for reasons that are not made clear.

On the way, just as Gavin is pressing Silas for the answers about his parents, Gavin suddenly passes out. At first we are lead to believe Gavin is seemingly suffering from the same time sickness that affected Izzy and Josh based on previous episodes where illness has been observed. Instead we learn that Gavin was drugged when he took a drink of water that Silas offered him. When Gavin wakes, he has been captured by The Exiles, is taken to The Cave to mine the ore. Gavin then remembers that Silas put a map in his pocket when he was passing out that contains an escape path from “The Cave”. Eve and Levi are also planning to escape after Levi has also been beaten by The Exiles.

The last important aspect of the current story arc detail finds us with Ty who is wondering what is making noise in the underbrush near the encampment after he had a talk with guilt ridden Veronica to cheer her up.

Suddenly Scott appears alone at the encampment without Rebecca. Looking exhausted and bedraggled after returning from the time travel facility tunnels that he and Rebecca entered during last weeks episode, Scott tells Ty “You’re never going to believe what happened!”
