    Hello fellow Comic-Con fans.

I know it has been over two months since it ended, but we still feel the fantastic excitement from our favorite convention. I am reflecting on the amazing panels I attended and some of the great interviews I had the opportunity to conduct. This year, I am happy that Comic Con is back in full swing. Despite the two strikes in 2024 that severely impacted the event, it did not seem to have any lingering effects. It looked improved than ever. Every year, Comic-Con continues to grow, with more panels, more independent artists, and an even greater selection of amazing things to buy. And every year, I find myself loving it more. I have been attending since 2012, and each year feels like my favorite. It is always a pleasure and something I eagerly look forward to whenever Comic Con arrives. The fun and informative panels, along with the intriguing and surprising interviews I get to conduct as a member of the press, make it even more exciting. I always look forward to discovering new and exciting information about current projects that specific stars are working on.

    The Toxic Avenger:

One panel I really enjoyed this year was The Toxic Avenger panel featuring Director Macon Blair, Peter Dinklage, Elijah Wood, and Taylour Paige. The panel was held in the famous Megalithic Hall H on July 24, 2025 to a rave fan reception. There were lots of laughs, and a trailer for the film, a remake of the original The Toxic Avenger from 1984, was also shown.

I was never familiar with that comic or movie before, but this version looks incredibly fun and funny. I am glad to see that. Hopefully, this Toxic Avenger will attract a whole new audience to both the film and the older versions. Elijah Wood mentioned that he was thrilled when he saw the conceptual drawing of what his character, Fritz, would look like.

It was nothing like Elijah had ever played before, and he stated that the chance to transform into that character was fun. Peter Dinklage mentioned a point about how, with The Toxic Avenger, the message of environmental concerns and climate change can be discussed using satire or humor to bring those issues to the forefront. Peter feels that The Toxic Avenger is necessary and needed, especially now that the environment is under a deeper threat than ever before. We include the full panel below courtesy Troma Entertainment.

I also had the immense pleasure of interviewing the production team behind Legion M, which is producing a graphic novel and hopefully a movie called ‘Defiant’ about Robert Smalls that I recently reported on. If you do not know who Robert Small is, look him up by clicking the links included above. Smalls was an incredible individual who lived during the United States Civil War era.

Legion M is such a fantastic company when it comes to independent films and filmmakers. I had the pleasure of speaking with them, and they provided me with some insight into what it takes to get a movie produced and off the ground.

    Stern Pinball:

One of my favorite parts of attending Comic Con is connecting with companies I genuinely admire and respect. One of those companies is Stern Pinball, a renowned manufacturer of gaming machines that specializes in creating highly unique pinball machines.

I have been covering their remarkable machines since 2022, when I had my first interview with them. I have been a fan ever since, and this year I had the opportunity to conduct another interview with Matthew Geyer, the VP of marketing for Stern. Matthew discussed their newest pinball machines, namely Dungeons and Dragons and King Kong.

But the highlight is their latest launch, the Jaws 50th Anniversary Premium Edition, which they are incredibly excited about featuring many innovations and awesome artwork. I also had the pleasure of playing not just with the new JAWS machine but a full range of their different machines, which include games of every type and everything! It was also a lot of fun to see a life-size statue of the Quint character right next to the Jaws pinball machine! He kept a close eye on it, ensuring that everything was going smoothly. Matthew told me that they usually launch about three to five games a year, with three major releases. These are always tied to pop culture, like rock ‘n’ roll or comic books. It is always fun to watch YouTube videos of these incredible machines being built and played, and to see the cool features Stern includes in them.

    OverPower:

The appeal of Comic Con also introduces attendees to a variety of genres. On July 26, 2025 I learned more about comic books and card games to fantasy novels when I attended the **OverPower** Press Room courtesy of the SuperPR Guy Gary Miereanu. OverPower is a game where two players battle with teams of four heroes and villains. “Unlike most other collectible card games, OverPower is not a resource management game, which makes its gameplay unique and both strategically and structurally different from Magic: The Gathering“. I must admit that I am unfamiliar with this type of card game. I did not participate in any of it, so it was a little daunting for me to take this interview when I knew nothing about the product. However, upon learning about OverPower and sitting down with the creative team, I gained a whole new perspective and respect for what these gentlemen do. The artwork is incredible, and it is an immensely popular card game, similar to Magic: The Gathering. However, it features darker characters and richer artwork.

2027-07-26 Casey Parsons in SDCC 2025 OverPower Press Room
Image by Lori Glumac of #TeamWHR

I sat down with Casey Parsons, the ongoing staff artist for OverPower, who says he is creating “3 cards a week on average.” He is working on Flaxons and Alien Invaders. He is given a specific block of time to complete the project and deliver what the company requires. A highlight for him was receiving the call to draw Cthulhu; he loves drawing monsters the most. Having his Cthulhu published was a childhood dream come true. Some of Casey’s artistic influences are George Pratt and Bill Sienkiewicz; he loves the old-school artists. He mentioned how he loves art history, and one of his major influences is Rembrandt; he loves to “create through that filter.” Casey said he is not a very technical artist, which makes drawing machines more challenging for him. “I enjoy drawing monsters and organic elements. However, I prefer not to use rulers. I like to draw all my lines freehand. So, all the buildings are done freehand, and I work traditionally.”

Next, I spoke with an artist known as Ito. We discussed how AI might influence the design of characters in this type of game. He was not concerned about that because he knew fans could tell the difference and prefer their art to be hand-drawn with oils and watercolors. “The number of gigabytes you cannot replicate. I hand-draw without using a lot of gigabytes, and AI is not there yet.” One of Ito’s influences outside of comic-book artists is John Singer Sargent, known for his portraiture and free, carefree brushstrokes. Lawrence Alma-Tadema and, of course, Michelangelo. He was wearing a Bob Ross T-shirt, and I mentioned Bob as well, and he noted Ross’s carefree style.

It was wonderful for me to sit down and talk with these gentlemen about their art and their passion for it. They still had enthusiasm and passion for drawing and painting, preferring to use real watercolors or oils instead of digital methods. There is nothing like pencil to paper. Sorry. And it really is effective, especially as someone who tries to oppose AI as much as possible; having the actual touch of an artist makes an enormous difference.

As a result of interviewing with the gentleman from Overpower, I have a new respect for that genre and those types of card games. I wish them the best of luck with their current iteration and hope it performs exceptionally well. Unfortunately we could not interview the entire creative team in the SDCC Press Room. Instead we include interviews with OverPower courtesy of our friends at ThatsMyETV.

Overall, it was a successful Comic Con, 2025. A few bumps and glitches here and there, as has been the case since I started all these years ago. But you go with the flow, enjoy yourself, and have a grand old time. I do not think I will ever grow tired of attending Comic Con, as it is a celebration of art, artists, comic books, pop culture, and things that bring people joy, and we need that now more than ever.

    Hello fellow Comic-Con fans.

Defiant The Robert Smalls Story cover

It has been over a month since our favorite convention ended, but it will always stay in our memories. One of my favorite parts of attending Comic-Con with my press badge is the chance to interview the cast and creators of upcoming movies or TV series. Comic-Con also provides an excellent platform for independent and smaller production companies to shine and avoid being overshadowed by the major studios. One such independent company is Legion M; it is the world’s first entertainment studio that “allows fans to invest in and be part of the creation of new movies, television shows, virtual reality, and other pieces of entertainment content.”

I had the chance to be part of the press room for the graphic novel and upcoming movie “Defiant: The Story of Robert Smalls“. I was first introduced to the incredible story of Robert Smalls years ago. His story is quite remarkable, from his beginnings to his rise from slavery to a prolific part of history. “Defiant: The Story of Robert Smalls” which occurred during the United States Civil War, is a story of resilience, determination, and the sheer will to fight and be defiant.

Meeting one of Robert Small’s descendants, Michael Boulware Moore, in the press room was also incredible. Robert shared insights into what it was like knowing that legacy, carrying that history and legend in his bloodline. I am glad to know that. Along with the graphic novel, a movie is in development. Unfortunately, I don’t know much about the film because they are still very hush-hush about it. Who is writing it? Who is directing? Any casting details? The one thing I did find out is that the wonderful, prolific, and incredible actor, director, producer, and writer Bill Duke is involved in the project. When I heard that Bill Duke was involved, I was ecstatic. I was hoping he would be at Comic Con, but unfortunately, he was unable to make the trip.

Defiant The Robert Smalls Story Graphic Novel

I’m glad Robert Smalls’ story is gaining more recognition. It will be portrayed on a much larger scale. His story should be celebrated. He was an incredible man, and his story is quite unbelievable, yet also adventurous and inspiring at the same time. It’s also wonderful to see artists of color highlighted and praised for their fantastic talent. Michael mentioned in the press room that he was happy to see and hold the graphic novel since he had been involved in its creation for years. Finally seeing it come to life was amazing, mainly because it’s about his family. He is the great-great-grandson of Robert Smalls, so having something tangible in his hands is truly a special moment. He also said that Rob Edwards, the writer of the graphic novel, put great integrity into the work and stayed true to who Robert Smalls was. Michael said it was great to have the graphic novel available to a new generation so they can learn about the incredible Robert Smalls. That’s a fantastic thing because more people need to know about this extraordinary man.

When I asked Michael who his dream cast for the movie would be, he really couldn’t give me an answer because, unfortunately, everything is still in the development stage—no word on when a film will be released. I think one person or actor who would have been amazing, like Robert Smalls, would have been the wonderful Chadwick Boseman. Boseman had that integrity, talent, and sheer presence onscreen that would have brought Robert to life beautifully.

Image by Lori Glumac for #TeamWHR

Michael made a very telling comment about how the world views history, especially Black history. He said that growing up, Robert Smalls and his legacy, or his life, were largely forgotten, which is unfortunate because many remarkable people of color have stories that have also been lost. I am glad that Robert Smalls’s story is finally getting its recognition—not only in a graphic novel but also with a movie in the works. People who don’t know who he is should learn about him. I am thrilled and proud to have been part of that effort. Unfortunately, I couldn’t attend the panel due to a prior commitment, but I bet it was fantastic. I also love that if you visit the Legion M website right now, Defiant is the first thing you see. Plus, I really like the poster; it’s a clear homage to Shaft and Richard Roundtree and that groundbreaking movie.

Michael again highlighted the incredible accomplishments Robert achieved. He was one of the first African Americans to command a naval vessel, a remarkable achievement that was unheard of during the Civil War. He also founded the Republican Party in South Carolina, the party of freedom at that time. Michael explained how Robert arrived at a perfect moment in U.S. history, helping to steer the country back from the Civil War. One story Michael shared was about what happened when Robert returned from his adventures. It sounded like a remarkable story, and you should hear how Michael tells it. I can’t wait to see that on the big screen, imagining how it would play out.

SVCC 2016 The Legion M interview (l-r) Lori, Paul and Jeff
Image by Kenn of #TeamWHR – Click to watch our interview

I also had the chance to sit down with the wonderful Paul Scanlan, one of the founders of Legion M. It’s always a pleasure to see him, especially since WormholeRiders News Agency was the very first news outlets to interview Legion M when it launched.

I interviewed Paul and Jeff Annison at Silicon Valley Comic Con (renamed SiliCon, it was cancelled after the 2022 convention) a few years back, so reconnecting was great. Paul mentioned that their goal with the graphic novel is to raise awareness of Robert Smalls and get his name into the cultural conversation.

2025-07-24 Paul Scanlan of Legion M on Defiant The Robert Smalls story
Image by Lori Glumac of #TeamWHR

Paul emphasized that it’s essential for him and his team to highlight Robert Smalls because he’s not widely known, but he deserves recognition. Paul said they want to correct this injustice by introducing the world to Robert Smalls. It’s exciting to hear that the novel is doing well and is being used in schools. He also mentioned that there’s a teacher’s guide to help educate students about Robert Smalls. We need more initiatives like that.

Defiant The Robert Smalls Story Graphic Novel exerpt

Paul pointed out that, given today’s political climate, it’s great that the novel remains unbiased and that both sides of the spectrum have come to embrace Robert Smalls. And, of course, Legion M itself maintains no political leanings, which is reassuring in today’s age. Paul also shared more about the film—they’re involving the writers and want their director to be part of the screenplay development. They aim for the divisions to collaborate, which I think is fantastic because it ensures everyone is on the same page.

I hope this article and the accompanying videos will provide you with a better understanding of who Robert Smalls was. I encourage you to find the graphic novel and read about this remarkable man yourself. I am very excited about the movie currently in development and look forward to seeing where it goes. It’s also exciting to see Robert Smalls finally recognized as part of history.

Once again, I want to thank Legion M for always being such an incredible production company and for giving fans like us the chance to be part of such an important story. In the future, it’s always a pleasure to see Paul at conventions. I especially want to thank the creators of the graphic novel and everyone involved in this fantastic project including Gary Miereanu for inviting WormholeRiders News Agency to the Defiant Press Room. I wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors, given the phenomenal story they have and included the original promotional video below for your enjoyment.

    Hello my fellow Alien fans!

I am here to share my thoughts on the new Hulu series, Alien: Earth, which premiered at San Diego Comic-Con 2025 in Hall H. At the end of the panel, we were shown the first episode.

As a Gen Xer, Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979) and James Cameron’s Aliens (1986) are, by definition, masterpieces. Both serve as models for how to craft a horror science fiction film. They have stood the test of time, being over 40 years old and still making audiences scream in their seats, no matter how many times I watch the original and the sequel. I love them more with each viewing. I was not a fan of Alien: Romulus; I had many issues with that film.

So, when I heard about a potential series called Alien: Earth, I was intrigued but honestly a little skeptical. My skepticism stemmed from wondering how the writer or writers tackled the issue of Earth, since Earth was not in either of the two movies. And I asked how they would expand a simple Xenomorph hunt into a whole series. I know it took about five years or more to develop this series, due to the writer’s strike and the actor’s strike, which also played a role in the delay of the series. I was excited to get into Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con. Naturally, I was optimistic.

    Neverland:

As the first episode, titled “Neverland”, written and directed by Noah Hawley, began, I felt happy because it closely matched the style of the original films.

The way it was filmed, the scenery, and the tribute to the original movies conveyed a sense of camaraderie and unity when we saw the galley, a duplicate of the scene from Alien. That feeling of connection and shared spirit was obvious.

    Alien Galley dinner scene

Then the episode continued. I want to warn you now; I will be referencing the original two films many times throughout. And I have some thoughts on it. I was not too pleased with what came out, but then again, I am such a purist when it comes to the original two films. This post will contain the first two episodes, not a complete summary, but the highlights, including my pros and cons.

I will say that the aesthetics started beautifully in the very first episode. It mirrored the scope of *Alien* and *Aliens*, particularly in its depiction of Mother. However, one thing that bothers me is that the ship is still too bright; there was a kind of haze in the lighting of both films that I feel is missing here. Additionally, I find it troubling that Neverland is involved and that Peter Pan is somehow engaged in the story. I do not believe this aligns with the canon.

    video
    play-sharp-fill

The opening crawl of the series states, “In the future, the race for immortality will come in three guises—cybernetically enhanced humans, cyborgs, artificial, artificially intelligent beings, and synthetic beings downloaded with human consciousness hybrids.” This added information confused me a bit because, once again, in the original two movies, both Ash (Ian Holm) and Bishop (Lance Henriksen) were androids, not cyborgs or synthetics. The next part says, “which technology prevails will determine what corporations rule the universe.” That is a scary thought because corporations are what caused the mess in the first place.

    Alien Earth S1x01 USCSS Maginot

The opening scene is pretty and effective. I like the initial scenery, where you see the ship, followed by flashes of the alien, and then you hear the music, which always plays a significant role in both movies. Butthis Alien: Earth has modern music, which I always dislike when it is used in a context that does not seem to fit.

The year is 2120. USCSS MAGINOT Mission length is 65 years. The next thing you see after that is the opening of the sleep chambers, just like in the original film. There are parts of Alien: Earth that I will give them credit for because they stay true to the aesthetic of the original two, which I find crucial. If you are going to create a series based on two iconic, historic, groundbreaking movies, you should at least maintain their look to avoid feeling too jarring or disconnected from the series. It states that the distance to Earth is 805,000,000 miles.

Alien Earth Sydney Chandler as Wendy

The other thing I was questioning, not necessarily disappointed about, was the main character, Wendy (Sydney Chandler). She is almost like a copy of Ripley. I understand because Sigourney Weaver is the model for how Ripley looks. They could have chosen someone else to avoid the same look. That is also what bothers me — they did not opt for blonde hair and blue eyes instead of dark hair and dark eyes. I have this weird aesthetic thing.

What I love is seeing them all wake up from the sleep chambers, reintegrate into their place in the galaxy, and go about their daily routines. All their talking and eating together—which is precisely what happens in Alien—is what I appreciate about both films. To me, that is an homage because that is what I expect to see in everything from now on. I am still so disheartened that it went down that Disney rabbit hole. They included Peter Pan, the Lost Boys, and Neverland, which has nothing to do with Alien, Aliens, the Xenomorph, or any of that. It is just another way, I guess, of bringing Disney into the fold when it doesn’t need to be there.

Alien Earth Babou Ceesay as android Morrow

Morrow (Babou Ceesay) is the security officer and resident cyborg. Five companies control the entire universe. Prodigy is the newest, led by Boy Cavalier (Samuel Blenkin), who resembles an Elon Musk-like figure—a trillionaire boy genius with hints of Howard Hughes. The wonderful thing about the two movies is that we don’t know much about the characters; we only know their names. We know extraordinarily little, if anything, about their backgrounds. The only way to learn more would be if you watched the director’s cut of Aliens. For example, we know Sigourney Weaver’s character Ripley had a deceased daughter because Ripley had been floating in space for 57 years. That’s why it’s called Alien. It has nothing to do with the humans being just part of the story. And yes, they play a part, but the central focus is the aliens, which is the whole point. It’s the suspense, it’s the fear, and it’s the anticipation of what is to come.

    2025-08-12 Alien Earth poster8

Like any science fiction show, it features other creatures as well. What they are experimenting with or what they’ve discovered isn’t always clear. However, face huggers and xenomorphs are the main monsters. The specimens are the mission, as Morrow said.

I think one of the key differences for me is that now we’re dealing with Earth, which is much larger and more expansive. In both films, we dealt with a much smaller space. We were on a spaceship, so there was nowhere for them to go. I believe that made the suspense feel much more immediate: they were trapped. They couldn’t go anywhere. They could only launch out of the spaceship, but even then, Ripley was in space for 57 years. As they said, “You’re damn lucky we found you. You could have been wandering out there forever.”

That’s what I love about both films, the sense of isolation, of solitude. You’re in space, with nothing around you. On Earth, it’s a different story. So, again, I keep coming back to the two films because you can’t compare them, as they are the templates for every Alien franchise film, from the very first to this current version. There’s no way you can avoid comparing them.

Alien Earth Timothy Olyphant as Kirsh

And now we’re on Earth. Prodigy. Neverland. Research Island. I love that Timothy Olyphant (Kirsh), who plays a synthetic, is in this series. He’s such an outstanding actor and has appeared in several iconic series before. He’s just an exceptional actor overall. I hope that Kirsh will be a character to sink his teeth into.

Within the Neverland research island, experiments involve mind transference from a dying host to a new one, transferring a dying child’s mind to an adult body. I have no idea what this has to do with aliens in general. This part makes no sense to me and doesn’t fit with the rest of the story. It feels like a side story the writer added without considering the main plot. Also, the fact that the character’s name is Wendy, which relates to Peter Pan, and the mention of the Head of Prodigy—it’s like Peter Pan; he never wants to grow old because he’s the youngest trillionaire ever, walking around in linen suits and barefoot. It just makes no sense to me. The mind transference, or consciousness transference, is from a human to a synthetic, which again makes absolutely no sense.

2025-08-13 Alien Earth Fear Takes New Forms

Disney has its hands in this episode by showing not only parts of Peter Pan but also Ice Age. I am still baffled by how this relates to the main point of the series. My frustration lies in the fact that, again, they are not sticking with the canon that has long been established.

That’s also something I’m a little confused about: they gave the main character the name Wendy. Who’s now the synth? The consciousness of a girl who has a brother. So, Wendy, among all the alien stuff, is going to find her brother. Which I guess makes sense, but it doesn’t, because again, it has nothing to do with the aliens. And this is, I think, my biggest problem with this: when it’s called ‘Alien: Earth,’ show us aliens. I don’t care about the backstory of the synthetics or humans. Just show me the aliens because that is what it’s all about. They are characters, yes, and yes, I semi-care about them because they’re there to fight the aliens, but that’s the surface level; I don’t care about it. At least I don’t care about their backstory. All I want to see is them fighting the aliens. That’s it. There are many elements of playing God in this that they want to preserve the human mind, even if it is in a synthetic body. So, it’s a lot of playing God and preventing someone or something from dying. They keep it alive by transferring human consciousness into a synthetic body. The problem with that is, as Kirsh mentioned, there are no emotions. There’s no anger, no pain, no happiness, nothing. Because it’s all gone, since they are no longer human, yet they retain a human mind, which I think is a recipe for disaster. “If I’m not human, what am I? Whatever you want to be.”

Alien Earth S1x01 Morrow discovers the alarms

When we finally get back to the spaceship, the lights and sound sirens are going off. That I love; I’m back to the place where we should be and never leave, however what bothers me about this is that it’s too bright. Meaning it’s not dark enough. It’s not mysterious enough. It’s not creepy enough; it needs to have that element of suspense, which it lacks. It almost looks like you are on a ride at Disneyland because of the lights and sounds. It doesn’t feel urgent enough. When Morrow is sitting at the Mother keyboard and is typing in commands or information, Mother is feeding it back to him. That part I love because that is very much part of what I know and love about the two films. And that feels authentic, that feels real. One of the other crew members is banging on the door to Mother’s room and asks Morrow to let her in. On the screen, it says crew status. And he gets up and looks at her and doesn’t let her in. And to me, the crew member her reaction doesn’t feel genuine because there’s a xenomorph after you, and you’re not panicking. I don’t know, that doesn’t seem very authentic to me.

Alien Earth S1x01 Kirsh finds the aliens

Not even 30 minutes in, we see the Xenomorph pass by the glass of the door And I hate to say this, but it looks fake. And again, my problem is that you see the Xenomorph fully, and that’s what bothers me because, with the first two films, we don’t ever see the Xenomorph completely until the last 15 minutes or so of the film. We only see it in shadow, silhouette, or partially; we barely see it fully, which adds to the creepiness and terrifying nature of it, along with the terror and scariness of how it makes you feel. It just slowly walked by the window where Morrow was, and it almost looked fake. That whole sequence of it walking by just seemed ridiculous. Morrow writes on the board. “Crew status: crew dead. A collision course with Earth is unavoidable.” “Containment of specimens is priority one.”

Seeing the alien shouldn’t happen within the first 30 minutes. This is the first episode, and there are 35 minutes left. This is precisely what I’m talking about. You don’t see the alien until, or in full view, until 15 minutes before the end of the movie in both films, if I remember correctly. And that’s what makes it so suspenseful, so horrifying, so terrifying, and so fear-inducing — because you don’t know where it is, what it looks like, how big it is, or anything else. I guess we do have some idea of what it looks like, but the fact that it also moves very humanly, almost threw me off a little bit. It’s not as alien as I would expect it to be.

    Mr. October:

We are in a place called New Siam, Prodigy City. Just another typical day, like nothing’s about to happen. And then, boom. Alien crash. An interesting point is that they show parts of New Siam, and if this is supposed to be the year 2120, why does it look like modern-day Siam? Or modern-day Vietnam or something similar. It doesn’t match the year it’s supposed to represent.

After the search and rescue team goes in to find survivors from the crash, they go underground to explore further. And that’s when things start getting, of course, more like Aliens.

Of course, when the search and rescue team split up on the downed science vessel spaceship, it’s dark with red lights and sparks flying. I understand this because it echoes those two original films. When it reaches that part, I’m fine. I love those moments. It’s everything else that’s implausible that bothers me. I don’t care about Wendy finding her brother, Joe D. Hermit (Alex Lawther), who’s a tactical officer and medic, joining the search and rescue. None of that matters to me. I want to see the aliens. That’s what I signed up for.

So, when Wendy discovers that there is a tactical unit inside the downed spaceship, she wants to go in and help rescue people because her brother is there. And her brother thinks that she’s dead because he doesn’t know that her mind was transferred to a synthetic. So, Boy Cavalier sends the Lost Boys to help, and of course, he is going to monitor their heart rate, their brain waves, and other vital signs to see if they can stand the stress.

    Alien Earth cast poster

This is what’s very baffling to me. These synthetics have zero training in search and rescue. They are not Marines like they were in the second movie. So, I find it perplexing why you would send these children into that situation, because that is what their mental state is geared toward. It is a life-or-death situation—literal life and death—with no training and no experience. It is very strange to me that this even happened, which strains my suspension of disbelief. Does not make any sense. I understand that in the second movie in *Aliens*, Ripley herself says, “I’m not a soldier.” Still, she has been in enough scenarios where she’s at least a flight officer and knows her way around, and she learns a bit from Hicks (Michael Biehn) and the others are around Marines enough to pick things up. These are kids. They have no training, nothing, and it seems implausible. I don’t even think they would make any impact at all.

Two members of the rescue team enter a room and find the specimens, which are being transported behind a locked door. They’re happy to see that because they know those are dangerous. I’m sorry, I know that’s CGI, but the face huggers and the other creatures look fake. That’s another thing: as I’ve mentioned, the fact that they spent so much money on this and couldn’t use practical effects is inexcusable, as far as I’m concerned. They could have made that real, made it look genuine.

    2025-08-12 Alien Earth poster2

As the ragtag team of rescuers heads toward Earth, Kirsh gives a spiritual rant about how humans used to be food. The context is interesting since that’s what the Xenomorphs use humans for — a host to feed and grow. I have no idea why they’re playing rock music at the end credits, but that’s the end of episode 1. Again, I didn’t like it, and watching it a second time didn’t change my opinion.

Mr. October is the title of episode 2, written by Noah Hawley and directed by Dana Gonzales. In episode 2, we first see a couple of the rescue team members and Joe going through the wreckage. He thinks he sees something behind him, the viewer sees the end of the tail, and they’re starting to make the creepy vibe of the original.

As the team enters the med lab, Joe notices that the suffocation some of them suffered is unusual. He observes the blue lips and mentions that it was a toxin. Joe then notices a screen that shows a picture of the inside of one of the victims, looking like a foreign object inside him. He says it’s got a code 1562. When one of the other team members asks why 1562 is so bad, Joe says, “Alien.” The interesting thing to me, though, is that he says it nonchalantly, like there’s no emotion, there’s no urgency to it. How is that normal? Maybe seeing a foreign object, an alien inside a human body, is normal at that point, but there doesn’t seem to be any urgency on his part for it. So, it was very odd to see that. I believe the problem with this series is that it focuses too much on the backstory of the humans, cyborgs, synthetics. Again, this is just my opinion as a viewer—I don’t care about the backstory. That is not important to me. What matters are the aliens and how the humans/synths/cyborgs interact with them. That’s my primary concern. I couldn’t care less about Prodigy, Neverland, or any of this. As a fan of the two greatest science fiction horror films of all time, I care about what those movies are about. The other movies don’t focus on the back stories of the humans involved. Again, this is just my opinion. If you are going to make a movie about an alien Earth, then show aliens on Earth. Could you show me the aliens? That’s what I want to see.

Alien Earth Samuel Blenkin as Boy Kavalier

Boy Kavalier raises a good point about AI. He says that with artificial intelligence, we build a machine, and then that machine creates an even better one, and so on, surpassing humans. His idea is about unlocking human potential. And we’ll see what they built before the machines destroy everything.

Dame Sylvia (Essie Davis) brought up a good point. She said, “We did something that no one else did—we ended death. But we must give them a quality of life.” Again, it all comes back to the hubris of man thinking they’re God, that they can stop the natural progression of life and death, which they can’t. There’s nothing on this planet that’s truly immortal. Maybe a jellyfish, but even then, it regenerates itself, so technically, it’s not. Anyway, one thing that always bothers me is when people try to go against nature. The human body is meant to grow old and then die. I mean, if we were to keep everybody alive and keep regenerating repeatedly.

Alien Earth S1x02 The eyeball cat

And of course, they have a cat. Because God forbid, we leave out an homage to the baddest cat in any galaxy, Jonesy. There is an eyeball-like creature that comes out of the cat, or did an alien possess it?

The CGI on the cat does not look particularly good, and as a cat owner myself, I can tell you that they should have used a real animal and added prosthetics. It would have looked a lot better and more realistic.

    2025-08-12 Alien Earth poster1

From here, the story gets a bit odd with a costume party happening in the building, and the alien showing up. There are elements of the story that are nonsensical and don’t serve the story. I wanted a bit more alien action, giving me the harrowing terror of the original films. By showing us the alien fully, the mystery is taken away.

My issue also lies with the actors themselves. When the humans see the Xenomorph, there is no fear in their eyes. It is as if it’s normal to see something like that. The actors show no emotion in the scenes with the alien. The story itself is complicated and again doesn’t serve the purpose of the series. Especially when Joe finds out that Marcy, his little sister who died, has now taken over Wendy’s body, he does not react to that news. He may be in shock from hearing that, but when he mentions he went to her funeral, again, no emotion. Even if he were in shock, his body would show it. That’s the power of a camera; it captures every nuance, every subtle movement. And again, modern rock music is used in this series as episode two ends.

    Alien Earth cast and creators

I think they could have used the money, the reported $250 million or however much they invested in this for a better series. The money could have gone toward practical effects. One of the many reasons the original two movies work so well is that the aliens are practical, not CGI. They look real and terrifying, especially the Queen alien in the sequel. Please understand that this is just my opinion about this series. I don’t want that to stop you from watching and enjoying it. It’s just not for me. I will always go back to the original two because I consider them masterpieces. They are the templates—things that should be studied, looked at, and emulated.

I’m overly critical of movies or franchises I love, those I know a lot about, and those I hold dear to my heart and in my movie-loving mind. This series isn’t very impressive at best. I may be a complete and utter snob about this kind of thing, but for me, as someone who loves film, original material, practical effects, acting, directing, and writing, this series is not.

I do hope that you do watch it and make your own decision about it. Please do not let my strong opinions keep you from enjoying this series.

    Hello, fellow Comic-Con attendees!

We are just days away from San Diego Comic-Con 2025! This year is a bit less chaotic than last year’s event, with no major Marvel movie screening like the one the previous year featuring Deadpool & Wolverine. Still, there are always fun things to see and do during the con, both inside and outside the convention center. This year seems to have more anime and games featured. We have not seen that since the writers and actors’ strike in 2023. Some major studios might not have panels this year, but that doesn’t mean their presence will be absent at the Con. Luckily, Hall H will host some great panels on Friday, although there will be very few on Saturday, which is unusual since both days tend to be the busiest.

The Comic-Con Museum also features historic Star Wars movie items from Star Wars: Echoes from the Galaxy. All of the fabulous items up for sale are being done by the legendary Julien’s Auction House.

Visitors can tour the museum located in nearby historic Balboa Park, only a short distance from the convention center to see some of the historic items up for sale before the auction that will be conducted on Sunday July 27, 2025.

This year is historic, as the legendary George Lucas will make his Comic-Con debut with a panel discussing his new Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. The panel will be moderated by Queen Latifah a legend in her own right. I do not doubt that with George Lucas present, Hall H will be even more crowded. The auction will be held at the museum on the last day of the con, Sunday, July 27th, at 10:00 am. Happy bidding!

    The Toxic Avenger banner

Thursday, Day One of the convention, kicks off with ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ opening the Hall H panel in style, followed by a panel featuring two major comedians, Gabriel Iglesias and Jo Koy. This might be the first time comedians host their own panel at Comic-Con.

One panel I am especially excited about is ‘The Toxic Avenger’ with Peter Dinklage. It will be great to see Dinklage back in Hall H, especially since he usually appeared there for the Game of Thrones panels in earlier years.

Another exciting event at the convention is that Stern Pinball is bringing its new machine to the convention. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the iconic shark movie that started it all… JAWS. Stern Pinball is riding that wave and unveiling its JAWS-inspired machine.

Their Stern pinball machines are fantastic and feature some legendary franchises, such as John Wick, James Bond, and The Mandalorian as well as rock and roll icons like Rush and Metallica. They also have their convention room at the Marriott Marquis, where you can try out some of their featured games. I plan to try my luck with the new JAWS machine and will give a report.

I and everyone I know was eagerly hoping for a ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps‘ panel in Hall H since the movie opens on July 25th, but unfortunately, there will be no Marvel panels this year.

I think the chaos that resulted from the ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ surprise panel premiere last year at led Comic-Con International and Marvel Studios to decide against a special screening of Fantastic Four: First Steps at this years legendary pop culture convention.

Friday at San Diego Comic-Con in Hall H starts with ‘Outlander‘ and its spinoff ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood,’ followed by ‘Alien: Earth,’ the Stephen King movie ‘The Long Walk,’ ‘Predator: Badlands‘ which has been moved up a month to November 7, 2025 from it’s original December release.

Friday in Hall H concludes with the exciting  long anticipated return of Disney Studios Tron franchise starring Jeff Bridges as the fabled Kevin Flynn. I for one am looking forward to the ‘Tron: Ares‘ panel!

If Hall H is not an option for you this year, there are still plenty of other fun panels to check out.

Some highlights include the exciting ‘Primitive War‘ set in Vietnam 1968 where a United States recon unit known as Vulture Squad is sent to an isolated jungle valley to uncover the fate of a missing Green Beret platoon. The group soon discover they are not alone.

The Primitive War panel is being presented in second largest venue, Ballroom 20. Featured stars include Ryan Kwanten, Tricia Helfer, and Jeremy Piven.

Also returning to the con is ‘Dexter: Resurrection‘ with Michael C. Hall and the cast, moderated by Jamie Chung.

Friday is always busy, with most panels taking place in the three main spots: Hall H, Ballroom 20, or the Indigo Ballroom at the Hilton Bayfront. Whatever you choose to do during the convention, plan accordingly, as most panels overlap and it can be challenging to see everything you want.

If you don’t have a badge for Comic-Con, don’t worry – you can still enjoy plenty of activities. Every year, Petco Park hosts a variety of exciting attractions. This year’s setup at Petco Park features a gritty underground Gotham City. Adult Swim, Abbott Elementary, will each have installations outside the convention. Most exiting is he soon to be released Alien Earth that will feature an immersive experience known as “The Wreckage” outside the Hilton Bay Front Hotel Thursday through Sunday

The Gaslamp restaurants will also showcase installations and offer fun food options and swag for fans. Paramount is bringing back “The Lodge”. Fans of Barbie can wear roller skates and roll around the Malibu Barbie Café. Peacock’s Twisted Metal is offering a “Bumper Battle” experience at San Diego Comic-Con. This interactive event allows fans to step into a post-apocalyptic world and participate in a bumper car tournament inspired by the show. Please note that since these activation’s don’t require a badge, lines may be long. It’s a good idea to check wait times on social media.

    Stranger Things S5 poster

With Warner Bros., Fox Studios, Disney, and Netflix not having panels this year, the panel rooms might be quieter, but that could mean more time for everyone on the convention floor. I am surprised that Stranger Things doesn’t have a panel this year, given that it is their final year, and it has always been a convention favorite. It’s always interesting to see which major series will and won’t be featured at Comic-Con when the schedule is released. I know everyone has their favorites, and it can be challenging, but it’s always fun regardless of the choices.

One thing that will always remain a staple at Comic-Con is the comics and the artists. No matter where you turn on the convention center floor, you will always see lots of vendors selling comic books or their original art. Take a stroll through Artists’ Alley and discover the amazing art showcased every day. Support these incredible independent artists, whether it’s by buying a sticker or original artwork. Another great way to support these artists is by sharing their content on all your social media platforms. After all, comic books were the original reason why Comic-Con started over 50 years ago.

As I finish this post and get ready for an exciting adventure, I want to remind all fans to support local comic book shops, local artists to keep pop culture, movies, and TV series alive! Importantly, stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, comfortable shoes, pack snacks, and grab as much swag as you can. Bring your enthusiasm! See you soon in San Diego!

We are less than two weeks away from this year’s convention. Every year, I get excited to see what Hollywood and the pop culture world have in store for us at the ultimate event. Hordes of comic book fans, pop culture enthusiasts, anime lovers, and gamers flock to San Diego every July to make their pilgrimage to this mecca. I have been attending San Diego Comic-Con since 2012, and each year, I look forward to participating; it is always the highlight of my summer vacation.

The schedule for this year’s convention is almost finalized; we need to see what Sunday brings. One exciting surprise that fans (me included) are looking forward to is George Lucas’ upcoming appearance, his first time attending. He will be there to promote the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.

George Lucas‘ appearance will occur in a panel on Sunday July 27, 2025 in Hall H with Guillermo del Toro (RealGDT), and award winning Doug Chiang to discuss the power of illustrated storytelling.

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art panel will be moderated by the legendary Queen Latifah where Mr Lucas will share a sneak peek of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. I can already imagine a huge line forming outside the famous San Diego Comic-Con Hall H for this exciting panel.

The new museum is being built by George Lucas and his wife, Mellody Hobson. The finished product is designed to feature and highlight all forms of visual storytelling – from photography and sculpture to comic art and performance arts.

Some of the fantastic artists featured in the Lucas Museum are Diego Rivera, Jack Kirby, and Carrie Mae Weems. It also acquired the Separate Cinema Archive, which includes posters, lobby cards, and other artifacts from the history of African American cinema from 1904 to the present. Some of those incredible artists are Paul Robeson, Duke Ellington, and Sidney Poitier.

Currently completing construction in Exposition Park, Los Angeles, the new museum is scheduled to open in 2026. This kind of museum is a much needed addition to spotlight the entertainment industries narrative arts efforts in the past and the future. I am happy that we will see this type of creative art celebrated and promoted by a filmmaker whose legacy speaks for itself.

Comic-Con Museum’s premiere attraction this year will be an auction of Star Wars memorabilia, Echoes From the Galaxy, which is organized by Julien’s Auction House in association with TCM and takes place at the museum on Sunday, July 27th.

I believe the auction will raise a significant amount of money, but it will also give dedicated Star Wars fans the chance to own a piece of their favorite franchise. How amazing would it be to own a part of one of the most beloved film series of all time?

The Comic-Con Museum is a vital part of the Convention and has displayed incredible exhibits over the years. The Museum operates year-round and is situated in Balboa Park, San Diego. Focusing on comics and popular arts, it offers the opportunity to get up close and personal with art through featured exhibits and events from Comic-Con. In past years, exhibits have featured Stan Lee, Batman, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, and Pac-Man.

In the past the museum hosted “Excelsior! The Life and Legacy of Stan Lee – Interviews with Michael Uslan and David Uslan” included below. The exhibit included artifacts ranging from the origins of the comics to the movies and everything in between. If you get the chance to visit the museum, you should. It provides a much more intimate look at what Comic-Con International is all about and the fantastic art that can be seen. Additionally, it’s a great way to avoid the crowds and enjoy a more personalized experience at the convention.

This year, we also learned about the Comic-Con Cruise, which will depart on January 30th, 2026, from Tampa to Nassau, Bahamas. The cruise is celebrating the 25th anniversary of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

Hosted by Felicia Day, onboard, fans can expect terrific themed parties, exclusive screenings, Q&A sessions with special guests, and much more. What an exciting time to be part of that fan base! I have not gone on the cruise myself, but it sounds like it will be a wonderful experience!

    SDCC Malaga:

For the first time, Comic-Con International will be going overseas! San Diego Comic-Con Málaga will take place at the Palacio de Ferias y Congresos from September 25 to 28, 2025. This event will feature a mix of international and local pop culture, including panels, exhibits, and special guests.

I am happy to see Comic-Con expanding to different countries. I hope we get to see more countries added to the list in the future.

With all the new announcements for this year’s Comic-Con International, I do not doubt that the future of Comic-Con in San Diego will continue to expand and that we will see it soar to new heights in the years to come. Comic-Con is such an integral part of the creative arts, keeping the medium alive and thriving. We include the SDCC Theme below for your enjoyment.

In closing for now, It is always a pleasure to see what Comic-Con International has to offer each year, as well as the amazing treats that fans can immerse themselves in. As the convention draws closer, prepare yourself for the whirlwind of comics, movies, art, pop culture, toys, figures, and television that this amazing convention has to offer. See you there!

I want to share my experience at the TCM Film Festival in Los Angeles, which took place from April 24 to April 28. This year marked my second unforgettable experience at the event, enhanced by an upgraded pass that made it even more thrilling. I was fortunate enough to book a room at the iconic Hollywood Roosevelt, a historic hotel steeped in celebrity lore, nestled right on the bustling Hollywood Boulevard. The excitement of being surrounded by the vibrant energy of the area and the allure of the hotel’s storied past made my stay truly remarkable.

This year’s festival was a remarkable celebration, marking its 16th anniversary and drawing movie enthusiasts from every corner of the globe. The enchanting theme, “Grand Illusions: Fantastic Worlds on Film,” set the stage for an immersive cinematic experience. Attendees could choose from four tiers of passes: Spotlight, Essential, Classic, and Palace, each offering access to a treasure trove of captivating films. I was thrilled to secure an Essential pass, which provided me with the exciting opportunity to attend the glamorous opening-night red-carpet screening of “The Empire Strikes Back.” This unforgettable evening was graced by a pre-movie interview featuring the legendary George Lucas, conducted by the insightful Ben Mankiewicz, making it a truly memorable night for all.

The lineup of films for this year’s event was wonderfully diverse, highlighting a vibrant array of genres that catered to every cinematic taste. I found myself grappling with the difficult task of selecting which movies to screen, as many of them overlapped in timing, with only a tight fifteen-minute window—or even less—to hustle over to the theater, check in, and join the throng of eager moviegoers lined up outside. Some films garnered a much larger following, creating a palpable buzz that pulsed through the crowd. This meant that I often had to make tough decisions to leave the captivating current screening, urged along with collective excitement, to queue up for the next blockbuster alongside a sea of enthusiastic film lovers. The charm of these festivals lies in the freedom to select films I had already experienced, allowing me to leave the theater without a pang of regret. Knowing the plot’s resolution ahead of time meant that stepping out before the credits rolled was not a loss; instead, it felt like a gentle embrace of nostalgia. I could savor the familiar emotions and vivid recollections evoked by the cinematic journey, confident that I had not missed anything significant.

During the exhilarating four-day event, I immersed myself in a total of nine films, a feat that proved to be quite a challenge this year. The lineup was a nostalgic dream, featuring many of my all-time favorite movies. The opening night was particularly fraught with tough decisions, as the majestic Grauman’s Chinese Theater buzzed with excitement for “Empire Strikes Back.” Yet, just a few blocks away, the historic Egyptian Theater was highlighting another gem—Paul Newman’s brilliant performance in “Hud,” a film that has captured my heart over the years. Driven by a fierce determination not to miss the opportunity, I reluctantly left early from the thrilling space battles of the Empire. I briskly made my way to the Egyptian, eager to experience the unforgettable storytelling of “Hud” on the big screen. Before the screening of “Hud,” the esteemed actor Keith Carradine graced the stage, sharing his profound admiration for the film. He spoke passionately about the remarkable performances delivered by Patricia Neal and Melvyn Douglas, both of whom were honored with Academy Awards for their roles. Keith also paid tribute to the legendary Paul Newman, whose charismatic presence brought unique energy to the production. He highlighted one of my favorite cinematographers, the brilliant James Wong Howe, emphasizing how his masterful black-and-white imagery infused the movie with remarkable depth and nuance, creating a visual tapestry that perfectly complemented the storytelling.

On Day 2 of the festival, I was fortunate enough to attend the Hand and Foot Ceremony for Michelle Pfeiffer. As Michelle made her entrance, accompanied by her renowned husband, David E. Kelley, the crowd buzzed with anticipation, thrilled to witness her moment of recognition immortalized in cement. Dakota Fanning and Elle Fanning, both radiant and enthusiastic, took to the stage to introduce Michelle.

They spoke with heartfelt admiration, reflecting on the memorable experiences they shared while collaborating with her, highlighting not just her talent but also her warmth and generosity. The atmosphere was filled with joy and appreciation, making the event truly special for everyone involved.

After the enchanting ceremony honoring Michelle Pfeiffer, I found myself with about an hour to indulge in some food before queuing up to see the original 1978 film “Superman,” a film starring the late, great Christopher Reeve, alongside the iconic Margot Kidder and the legendary Gene Hackman. The atmosphere in the line was electric, filled with fellow movie enthusiasts radiating excitement. There is something uniquely exhilarating about standing shoulder to shoulder with like-minded fans; the air buzzes with conversations that weave in and out like a vibrant tapestry of shared experiences and enthusiastic opinions. These exchanges not only help pass the time but also deepen the sense of anticipation as we collectively look forward to witnessing the magic of cinema unfold on the big screen.

After Superman wrapped up his exhilarating escapades, I made my way back to the cozy confines of my hotel room, eager for some much-needed nourishment and a few precious moments of respite.

The anticipation of the evening grew as I prepared to head to the vibrant pool area, where a screening of the beloved classic movie “Clueless” awaited. This is one of the many joys of attending the TCM festival.

Their superb schedule features the delightful array of the movie events it hosts, such as charming poolside movies and engaging movie panels that bring film enthusiasts together to enjoy the movies they love.

Last year, the sun-kissed surface of the pool glimmered beneath the stars during the screening of “Footloose,” and this time, with “Clueless,” I was greeted by a kaleidoscope of patrons donning costumes that brought the film’s iconic characters to life.

The atmosphere buzzed with excitement, promising an unforgettable evening under the twinkling night sky. The fantastic Elisa Donovan, who played Amber, was there to discuss making the iconic film and how, even thirty years later, the cast remains friends to this day. Elisa Donovan was openly delighted in seeing fans in costume and praised them for their attention to detail in creating their cosplay creations.

Day 3 provided me with a leisurely period, as the first film on my itinerary was not scheduled to begin until 2:45 p.m. I meandered along Hollywood Boulevard, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere and the iconic sights surrounding me. I strolled down those famous sidewalks, where countless names of legendary stars were etched into the concrete with elegance. Each step brought me closer to the rich tapestry of history, as I admired the intricate designs and the stories behind the illustrious figures immortalized beneath my feet. My first movie of the day was “Back to the Future,” which brought me back to my youth and the enthusiasm I remember from when I first saw that film on a big screen. Bob Gale, Charlie Croughwell, and Dean Cundey were the special guests who regaled us with tales of making that legendary film.

Next on my film agenda was the legendary Steven Spielberg classic “Jaws,” playing at the historic Egyptian Theater. Eagerly departing from “the future,” I rushed to join the lengthy line of fellow movie enthusiasts, my heart racing with anticipation for the thrilling experience that awaited me.

I was lucky enough to grab an aisle seat and settle in with my popcorn and drink in hand. The lovely Lorraine Gary, who portrayed Ellen Brody, was present to discuss making the film and her fondness for Robert Shaw. Her wit made the experience better as she discussed how movie making was mostly foreign to her, being a trained theater actor.

The last movie I watched that night was the legendary science fiction masterpiece “Blade Runner.” a favorite of mine and WormholeRiders News Agency. Fortunately, Blade Runner was showing at the same theater as “Jaws”, so it was going to be relatively easy to shift venues.

As a result I decided to leave early to join the extensive line of fans already queuing up. The version we were queuing up to see was the digitally remastered 2007 version of the film which was excellent.

Sean Young, who portrayed Rachel, was present to discuss the film and share her experience as a 19-year-old actress working with some of the industry’s heavy hitters. The 2007 version was nothing short of spectacular, with its vibrant colors that danced across the screen, breathtaking cinematography by Jordan Cronenweth that captured every intricate detail, and the evocative score by Vangelis that infused each scene with emotional depth. I made it a point to experience this extraordinary film in a theater, relishing the way it was meant to be enjoyed—larger than life, enveloping me in its visual and auditory splendor. With “Blade Runner” ending at midnight, I was tempted to make my way to the Chinese Multiplex to see “Wild at Heart,” but I could not make it. I spoke to some fellow movie fans who attended the screening, and they told me it started an hour late. They did not return to their hotel until well after 3 the next morning!

On the final day of the festival, I had three films I was eager to see. However, two of them unfortunately overlapped in schedule so I made a decision on which of the excellent movies to see.

After much deliberation, I decided to watch “Apocalypse Now” on the massive screen instead of “Sunset Boulevard.” I have attended many screenings of “Sunset Boulevard” on the big screen before making the choice a bit easier.

TCM FF 2025 Antoine Fuqua and Eddie Muller at the Apocalypse Now

Since I had never seen “Apocalypse Now” in a theater setting, the closest I had gotten was watching it on my own 4K 65-inch screen at home. Watchinmg the big screen version a real treat!

Director Antoine Fuqua and film noir expert historian Eddie Muller were there to chat about how impactful and utterly life-changing “Apocalypse Now” was to both. For me, the 70mm print of the original theatrical release version, courtesy of the George Eastman Museum from Martin Scorsese‘s collection, made the experience even more incredible, given Scorsese’s reputation as a champion for restoring and archiving the history of film.

The final film of the festival for me was the iconic masterpiece directed by Michael Mann, “Heat.” The atmosphere in the room was electric as both Mann and the legendary Al Pacino took the stage. Ben Mankiewicz, with his engaging charm, posed a fascinating question: how had two of the most celebrated actors of their generation, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, finally come together for a film? Listening to their insights was a profound experience, as they reminisced about the painstaking craft of filmmaking and the unforgettable shoot-out scene that erupted amidst the bustling streets of Los Angeles—a moment etched in cinematic history.

The film boasted a star-studded cast that left my mind racing with excitement, especially when I thought of the talented character actors who brought depth to the story. I could not help but reflect on the extraordinary Val Kilmer, whose powerful presence on screen had captivated audiences before his heartbreaking passing on April 1st. It was a poignant moment, filled with nostalgia for his talents, as I absorbed the richness of this cinematic event.

As I reflect on the TCM Film Festival 2025, I am filled with excitement and nostalgia. For anyone who cherishes the art of cinema and revels in the communal experience of watching films with fellow enthusiasts, I wholeheartedly encourage you to secure a pass for next year’s event. Over the past two years, attending this extraordinary festival has become a highlight of my year, weaving a tapestry of unforgettable moments. There is something indescribably joyous about being surrounded by kindred spirits—fellow cinephiles who share the same passion for storytelling on the big screen, all of us united in our love for film.

To encapsulate the essence of this experience, I am reminded of Gloria Swanson’s portrayal of Norma Desmond’s who’s poignant words from the climactic final scene of “Sunset Boulevard.” “You see, this is my life, it always will be. There is nothing else, just us and the cameras, and those wonderful people out there in the dark.” These words resonate deeply as I immerse myself in the magic of the festival, where each screening draws us closer together in a shared adventure through the lens of cinema!

The Saturn Awards, a prestigious celebration of genre cinema, first graced the entertainment world in 1972, spotlighting the captivating realms of science fiction, fantasy, and horror films.

Over the years, this iconic ceremony has broadened its scope to embrace the magic of television storytelling. In a heartfelt tribute to the late Lance Reddick, the awards introduced in 2024 the inaugural Lance Reddick Legacy Award, honoring Keanu Reeves for his outstanding performances in the beloved John Wick franchise. This accolade embodies a profound appreciation for an actor’s talent and the unforgettable characters they bring to life on screen.

Lance Reddick, a cherished figure within the science fiction community, garnered acclaim for his remarkable role in one of my all-time favorite series, Fringe. His untimely passing in March 2023 left a void in the hearts of fans, yet his enduring legacy will be celebrated through this special award in perpetuity.

Dean Devlin of Electric Entertainment, whose series The Ark earned a nomination, aptly described the Saturn Awards as “a great celebration of nerds cheering on nerd stuff.”

As an admirer of Mr. Devlin’s many contributions to genre entertainment over the past thirty years which include Stargate and Independence Day in then 1990’s, I wholeheartedly resonate with his sentiment!

As devoted science fiction fantasy drama fans, we revel in honoring our favorite narratives and characters, and this year, the highly anticipated Godzilla Minus One has undoubtedly secured its place on our list of cherished highlights.

Godzilla Minus One Director Takashi Yamazaki
Image courtesy Takashi Yamazaki on X

Godzilla Minus One is not only a genre film but also sets itself aside as a lesson in filmmaking. As I mentioned, what the director, Takashi Yamazaki, did regarding special effects is astonishing.

Unlike other recent Godzilla movies that are so CGI-heavy that they take you out of the fantasy, Minus One managed to strike a perfect balance. It utilized CGI to enhance the storytelling and create a visually stunning experience without overshadowing the narrative or the iconic monster. This balance is a testament to the film’s quality and a reason for us, as fans, to be reassured about the franchise’s future, knowing it is in good hands.

In this latest interpretation of Godzilla, the narrative strategically emphasizes the deeply woven human stories that resonate throughout the film. The creature, a looming shadow of fear, is not always depicted in its monstrous form but instead manifested through the terror and awareness of its impending presence. The filmmakers masterfully crafted a narrative that operates on multiple levels, disguising itself as a poignant commentary on political and social issues. Within this framework, Godzilla emerges as a powerful symbol of humanity’s hubris, a tangible representation of the chaos and destruction that ensues when conflict ravages a nation. The film unfolds as a chilling reflection on the aftermath of war, illustrating how its consequences give rise to a monstrous reality that lurks beneath the surface. Let us delve into the rich political and social themes “Minus One” explores, revealing how they intricately enhance the film’s overall narrative depth.

    Godzilla Minus One Destruction

What I find captivating about the film is its intricate weaving of Japanese cultural elements, vividly illustrating how the world has grown increasingly complicated. The filmmakers boldly decided to minimize Godzilla’s on-screen presence, yet his overwhelming impact reverberates through the narrative when he does appear. This deliberate restraint heightens the tension and anticipation, making the moments when the monster is revealed even more gripping, allowing the viewers to feel his powerful influence throughout the film.

One compelling reason to celebrate “Minus One” is its complete embrace of the Japanese language, which enriches the film’s authenticity and immerses viewers in a culturally nuanced experience. This choice elevates the storytelling, making it particularly enchanting to enthusiasts of Japanese cinema. Godzilla, a legendary icon, originated in Japan and deserves to be depicted through the lens of its rich cultural heritage.

Godzilla Minus One Shocking - 800

The film boasts an extraordinary cast, with Minami Hamabe portraying the resilient Noriko Ôishi and Ryûnosuke Kamiki embodying the complex Kôichi Shikishima as they navigate the challenges of post-war Japan. Their performances breathe life into the struggles and emotional depth of a society grappling with its past.

With the release of this latest incarnation of Godzilla, I hope Hollywood will pay attention to the nuances of crafting a genre film. It is a refreshing reminder of how to skillfully operate within the constraints of a modest budget while emphasizing storytelling more. The filmmakers of Minus One demonstrated an impressive ability to utilize visual effects with remarkable efficiency, creating a more immersive experience. Additionally, I was captivated by how the film concluded, leaving viewers with an intriguing hint of potential for a thrilling sequel which is currently being written to add to the seventy year Godzilla phenomena.

In closing, I penned an article that explores my deep affection not just for Godzilla but specifically for Minus One. The sheer brilliance of the filmmakers resonates with me profoundly; their remarkable dedication and creativity breathe new life into this legendary monster, resurrecting it from the figurative grave. It is truly inspiring to witness how they reimagined this iconic creature, blending nostalgia with innovative storytelling. I cannot help but admire their remarkable efforts in elevating the Godzilla legacy to new heights.

    Hello, Silo fans!

    Silo new poster portrait

Season two of the Apple TV series has become volatile in these last few episodes. I am happy to hear that this series has been renewed for a third and fourth season.

I am also happy Apple TV and other streaming services have taken up the torch from Netflix  with a large quantity of quality television shows that give fans an intelligent choice of science fiction series as we previously reported.

Since a favorite of mine, Fringe (2008 to 2013) ended, and now that The Ark has not been renewed, science fiction shows are no longer being broadcast on network television for the time being in the United States.

Nevertheless, I have enjoyed Silo as well as several streaming science fiction series that I have covered for TeamWHR. I have enjoyed watching these three episodes of Silo and was able to follow the story arc along nicely thanks to the awesome AMC Executive Production Team of Graham Yost (series creator), Remi Aubuchon, Fred Golan, Nina Jack, Morten Tyldum, Ingrid Escajeda, Michael Dinner, Rebecca Ferguson, and of course, Hugh Howey, the author of the fantastic book series.

    Silo main cast

The cast itself is terrific, led by Rebecca Ferguson, who I have been a fan of for a while and who can hold her own against heavy hitters, as demonstrated in the current Mission: Impossible franchise.

Tim Robbins, Common, Steve Zahn, and Harriet Walter round out the other actors in the series. Seeing an Academy Award winning actor like Tim Robbins venture into science fiction television is nice, especially considering that he is primarily a movie actor.

    Silo main and ensemble cast

Silo features an excellent supporting cast including Shane McRae as Knox, David Oyelowo as Sheriff Holsten, Billy Postlethwaite as Hank, Iain Glen as Dr. Pete Nichols, Chinaza Uche as Paul Billings, Avi Nash as Lucas Kyle, Remmie Milner as Shirley Campbell, Christian Ochoa Lavernia as Amundsen, Olatunji Ayofe as Teddy, Caitlin Zoz as Kathleen Billings, Tanya Moodie as Judge Mary Meadows, Chipo Chung as Sandy, Angela Yeoh as Deputy Molly Karins, Matt Gomez Hidaka as Cooper, Will Patton as Deputy Marnes, Akie Kotabe as Diego, a return of Amelie Child Villiers as young Juliette, and a superb supporting cast and crews.

This analysis will be a bit different from my normal routine television reviews. I will review the fourth, fifth, and sixth Silo episodes with a short synopsis of the top aspects of the story arc in each episode.

It will not be an in-depth scene by scene analysis as I usually do, but I will share with you my opinions and observations for the exciting episodes four, five, and six that follows our analysis of season two episodes one, two and three and hope you enjoy my Silo series analysis as much as I do writing it!

    The Harmonium:

    Silo S2x04 Juliette gets ready
    I,mage courtesy Apple TV

While Juliette (Ferguson) is trying to figure out how to fix her hazmat suit, Solo (Zahn) is tagging along in a way and trying to distract her from her task at hand.

I find Zahn’s character on the spectrum, giving her random facts about elephants and talking about 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne. I am not sure if all of that is his intention because he is the only one in that silo or if what he is doing is intentional.

    Silo S2x04 Solo and Juliette

With the episode directed by Aric Avelino and written for the screen by Sal Calleros, both move the story forward to inform the next episodes.

With Holland (Robbins) and Sims (Common) discussing their plan to impeach Judge Meadows (Tanya Moodie) with the hopes of bringing the Silo to a united front, there may be the opposite effect, and chaos may happen.

Silo S2x04 Harriet Walter as Martha and Claire Perkins as Carla ready to rebel

Miscreant Mayor Holland has a plan of his own and has a corrupt plan to take even more control over the citizens of the Silo who are on the verge of rebellion. I had read that the character of Holland in the books is the opposite of the actor portraying him. Tim Robbins is a great actor, but another actor closer to Holland’s characteristics should have been cast. Considering his insecurity in life, it would make more sense to me and make what Holland is doing much more sinister.

Silo S2x04 Judge Mary Meadows meets the Mechanical team

Holland’s intentions toward Judge Meadows are nefarious as he “invites” her to his place to try on her new suit. His intentions are not what they seem. Unfortunately, Meadows finds out the hard way that Holland tricks her, and the dinner she ate, which he provided, had poisonous mushrooms. As she lay dying, he tells her that her death will unite the Silo.

Juliette tells Solo about the outside and how she is scared and lonely. No doubt Solo feels he has been alone for some time and can relate. Solo reminds me of a person who wants some company, and when he finds that company, he takes it upon himself to talk and talk about random things that do not make sense.

Silo S2x04 Mayor Holland with Remmie Milner as Shirley and Shane McRae as Knox

Knox (Shane McRae), Shirley (Remmie Milner), and Walker (Walter) go to see Judge Meadows, but only Knox and Shirley enter the room and find Sims there. Once they discover the judge is dead, a knife sticks out of her chest, “The people of the Silo have to take care of themselves,” Holland says to them in the room. Knox and Shirley exit calmly and tell the others to do the same, not to arouse suspicion that something is wrong. Sims lies to the crowd gathered outside Judicial and tells them that Mechanical killed Meadows, hoping to cause a rebellion uprising or riot—justice for his benefit.

    Silo S1x10 Inside the Silo

The visuals of the Silo in general are wonderfully done. In specific, the spiral staircase that depicts various levels from down below to “up top” where the ruling IT group with the evil Miscreant Mayor Holland and his cronies work and live are very well done.

However, much of the series is very darkly lit. I assume that is intentional to show the bleak nature of the situation in the Silo, but it can be a bit difficult, in fact rather harsh at times. This often makes it hard to see what is happening in some of the scenes.

    Descent:

2024-12-13 Silo S2x05 Judge Sims with his wife Camille

With the mob incited in the previous episode by Sims, the mob is looking for Mechanical. Holland goes to visit Sims at his family home. He tells him that he will no longer be his shadow and that because he forced Holland’s hand, which led to the judge’s demise, Sims will now oversee the Judicial and become the new judge. There is a bounty for Knox and Shirley, one thousand credits each. That is enough incentive for the people of the silo to act. With Sims now judge, his priorities shift, although he has no idea that his wife Camille (Alexandria Riley) has a hand in helping Knox and Shirley hide. It is unclear if Camille would turn Knox and Shirley over or if she had other ulterior motives in mind. The director, Amber Templemore, and writer, Jenny DeArmitt, help move the story further into the chaos we see in the rest of the episode.

Silo S2x05 Holland recuits Lukas as his shadow

Holland is unhappy when hearing that Camille was spotted with the fugitives, but he has other plans. He recruits Lukas Kyle (Avi Nash) to help decipher the hard drive Juliette and Lukas had worked on together. Although Juliette never revealed to Lukas what she saw on the hard drive, Lukas is tasked with trying to piece together what was left of it. Lukas helping Holland is the catalyst for Kyle getting some time from his sentence in the mine. What Kyle discovers is love letters from Salvador Quinn to his wife. Holland’s reaction to hearing that made me wonder if he knew who Quinn was. It was also discovered that there are tunnels in their silo, but do not know where they lead. Holland keeps Lukas on to help figure out what those tunnels are for and where they might lead.

Silo S2x05 Sheriff Billings does not like what is happening

Sheriff Billings (Chinaza Uche) is suspicious of all the chaos and the sudden change in Sim’s role.

With Hank (Billy Postlethwaite), Billings discovers that Kennedy (Rick Gomez) is still alive and hiding in Mechanical. Kennedy convinces Billings that he knows all the “dirty secrets” of the silo and more and will tell him everything if he can get him some help for the bullet lodged in his shoulder.

Silo S2x05 Juliette repairs her hazmat suit

While searching through the remains of an old silo to repair her hazmat suit, Juliette comes across some evidence that Solo may not be who he says he is. She finds a picture of Solo and Tiny, but the picture looks nothing like who she thinks Solo is.

When Juliette confronts Solo about what she sees, he berserk and tells her he is the IT shadow. With Solo leaving Juliette alone, she continues to find a helmet to help fix her suit. She eventually finds one, but with her injured arm now in a full-blown infection, she collapses.

    Barricades:

Silo S2x06 Miscreant Mayor Holland to move against Knox Shirley and Shirley

This is the shortest of the three episodes I reviewed, just forty-five minutes. Holland knows more about what is happening than he lets on. Everything is “going as planned,” from the contaminated food to the barricade’s chaos. He wants Kyle to determine what that cryptic message is on Juliette’s hard drive. What does the code mean? And what does that mean for the Silo?

Silo S2x06 Paul Billings and Hank get orders

With Amundsen (Christian Ochoa Lavernia) not doing his job correctly, the barricade gets pushed to 120, allowing Mechanical to get the needed food. This may pose a problem for Holland, but it is only temporary. Diego (Akie Kotabe) meets with Sims and tells him that Mechanical has a saw that can cut through concrete. I assume that this fact is or will be significant in the upcoming episodes. Undoubtedly, that info will throw the proverbial monkey wrench in Holland’s plans. The director Michael Dinner and writer Jeffery Wang, worked together to keep the tension taut in this episode.

Silo S2x06 Judge Sims and Camille Sims

Sims is out of the loop and shares his concern with his wife Camille. They decide to cooperate, at least for the time being. Judge Sims then goes to warn Holland about what Mechanical is planning on doing.

Next, when Judge Sims sees Lukas Kyle in Holland’s office, he knows something is wrong because Lukas Kyle was sentenced to harsh punishment. Lukas should be in the mines serving his sentence, not helping Miscreant Mayor Holland.

Silo S2x06 Lukas gets ready after decoding

Instead Lukas therefore continues to decipher the code embedded in the hard drive but cannot quite get all of it and needs more information.

Upon hearing this, Mayor Holland immediately makes Lukas Kyle his shadow with privileges including access to “The Vault”. I am sure that since Solo was in “The Vault” in his own Silo that more of this will be explained in later episodes.

    Silo S2x06 Martha is concerned

Patrick Kennedy explained to Billings that when Juliette Nichols was on the run, the computer went down, and it was not a system reboot like he thought it was, but something else he could not explain.

Again, I assume this will come into play in later episodes. With that information, Billings finds Martha, Knox and Shirley and asks them what happened to Meadows. Upon learning the truth, he attempts to confront Holland about what he discovered, but Holland cuts off all communications. He tells Hank, “I do not stand with Judge, the mayor, or you. I stand with the law.”

    Silo S2x06 Solo saves Juliette

In the final minutes of this episode, we finally see Juliette as she wakes up in bed. With Solo’s help, as he tends to her wound, she does not waste any time and wants to return with the helmet she found to repair her suit. However, Solo has other plans in mind. Juliette knows that she must help Solo stop the water from rising or it will eventually kill him. We will have to wait and see exactly what Juliette decides to do in the next episode titled “The Dive”.

Silo S2x07 Juliette dives to drain Solo's Silo

Will Juliette help Solo in exchange for getting an undamaged hazmat suit, or will something else happen? I hope that what happens in the next few episodes helps fans piece together what the powers that be have in store for the Silo and what Juliette’s fate will be. I am sure those who read the books know where the series is going, but the writers may take a few liberties and change a bit of the story. Hey friends, what a fantastic time at San Diego Comic-Con 2024!

It was a tremendous change from last year’s event, which was lackluster due to the impact of the writers’ and actors’ strikes on the industry. I’m delighted that the writers and the actors could settle, making the event feel vibrant and alive again. Marvel Studios grand return to Hall H was a highlight, bringing back that nostalgic Comic-Con feeling. I also had the opportunity to attend press rooms for exciting upcoming projects like The Tower, a thrilling science fiction adventure, and True Noir: Peek Behind the Microphone, a gripping mystery series. I have linked my articles about both upcoming projects for your enjoyment.

The experience of attending Comic-Con is always an exhilarating mix of excitement and decision-making, akin to the famous dilemma may characters face. Navigating overlapping panels and events poses a delightful challenge, but the convention’s vibrant atmosphere and energy make it an unforgettable and thrilling experience.

It is a place where fans worldwide come together, united by their shared love for comics, movies, and pop culture. Included below is a video of where I began my adventures on Comic-Con Preview Night.

I had the most fantastic time at this year’s Comic-Con, which felt like a triumphant comeback, bigger and better than ever. The event was packed with panels from my favorite shows, and I even got to catch sneak peeks of all the upcoming Marvel movies. Sadly, one of the highlights was the final panel for What We Do in the Shadows in Hall H. The panelists, including Matt Berry (Toast of London), Mark Proksch (The Office), Kristen Schaal (Bob’s Burgers), and Kayvan Novak (Syriana), joined via Zoom, with Kayvan hilariously staying in character the entire time. It’s too bad that Natasia Demetriou (Stath Lets Flats) and Harvey Guillen (Blue Beetle) couldn’t make it. Unfortunately, I missed out on attending that panel due to a prior commitment but include the panel courtesy Films That Rock.

This year, the spotlight was on the highly anticipated superhero movie starring Deadpool and Wolverine. There was intense speculation about whether the film would be featured at Comic-Con, and the decision was made to host a massive panel at Hall H. The preparation for this panel was a mad scramble, highlighting its significance. Unlike the usual practice of allowing fans to stay in the room for subsequent panels, this time, it was different, adding to the event’s anticipation and excitement. The process of admitting fans into Hall H was riddled with last-minute challenges, resulting in a chaotic situation.

A massive queue extended around the waterfront and beyond, with an estimated ten thousand people waiting to enter a space designed for six thousand. I found myself among the hopeful attendees. When the room reached its capacity, ushers had to inform the waiting fans that there was no more room, leading to a slow dispersal of the disappointed crowd.

The fantastic experience in Hall H where the fortunate attendees had the opportunity to enjoy a panel featuring the talented cast of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, along with director Shawn Levy, followed by a screening of the movie.

Additionally, there was a stunning drone light show outside the convention center after the panel which showcased captivating images of Deadpool and other exciting visuals from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Unfortunately, I had already returned to my hotel and missed the show, but I managed to catch glimpses of it on social media. Panel courtesy Films That Rock.

I enjoyed attending the Transformers One panel, expertly moderated by Anthony Breznican.

The esteemed panel featured the likes of producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, director Josh Cooley, and some of the talented voice cast, including Keegan-Michael Key (Key and Peele), Brian Tyree Henry (Bullet Train), and Chris Hemsworth (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga).

As the animated movie is set to hit theaters on September 20th, the conversation delved into the profound impact of the Transformers cartoon on the upbringing of certain male cast members.

They fondly reminisced about rushing home after school, hastily making a sandwich, and eagerly tuning in to their beloved series. Keegan-Michael Key expressed how surreal it felt to be involved in anything related to Transformers, describing it as a dream come true and a significant highlight in his career. He also found it enjoyable because the key individuals involved were passionate Transformers fans with an extensive knowledge of the lore and intricacies of the universe, surpassing that of most fans. The atmosphere in San Diego during Comic-Con is extraordinary. The bustling historic Gaslamp Quarter District and the nearby hotels extend the convention experience with their unique offerings. You can find restaurants creatively transformed into themed spots, such as the Star Trek Energize Lounge, and don’t miss the Comic-Con Art Show featured at the prestigious Manchester Grand Hyatt. These unique offerings allow fans to immerse themselves in the excitement of the convention, even if they can’t secure a spot inside the main venue.

2024-07-17 Hall H lineThe convention is at its peak on Friday and Saturday, as major studios unveil their most highly-anticipated projects in Hall H. Enthusiastic fans can often be seen camping out or waiting line line for days in advance, eagerly vying for the best seats in the first few rows to ensure they don’t miss a minute of the action and to capture stunning photos.

The dedication is remarkable, with some fans even camping out on preview night to secure a prime spot for panels featuring powerhouse shows in the past like Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead. This tradition of passion and commitment has always been a defining characteristic of the convention.

The cast of Captain America: Brave New World, including Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker), Danny Ramirez (Top Gun: Maverick), Giancarlo Esposito (The Mandalorian), and Harrison Ford (Air Force One), appeared to offer a sneak peek of the teaser trailer. This version of The Fantastic Four will depart from previous iterations, with a distinct 1960s aesthetic permeating the entire movie. During rehearsals in London, Vanessa Kirby expressed her feelings about the strong bond that has formed among the cast, likening it to a real superhero family.

She hopes this close-knit dynamic will translate to the screen in the upcoming film set to be released on July 25th, 2025, coinciding perfectly with Comic-Con 2025. Interviews courtesy Entertainment Weekly.

There was a sense of anticipation at the event as cloaked figures marched onto the stage, leaving fans eager to see what surprises awaited them. The Russo Brothers were announced to return to the MCU to direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Amidst the excitement, the audience awaited the announcement of who would play Doctor Doom. As a cloaked figure stepped forward and removed its mask, it was revealed that Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer) would be taking on the role. The announcement was met with shock and mild disappointment from some die-hard Doctor Doom fans, but the excitement in Hall H was palpable as cheers erupted at the news. Downey expressed his enthusiasm for portraying complicated characters, and fans can look forward to seeing both MCU movies in May 2026 and May 2027. It will be interesting to see how The Russo Brothers handle Avengers: Doomsday, especially with critical eyes watching closely. Panel courtesy FilMonger.

Attending this event is always exhausting but incredibly enjoyable. It’s incredible to be part of a gathering where all things related to pop culture, fantasy, gaming, and comic books are enthusiastically embraced.

The sense of belonging among fellow fans and the legendary talent presented in San Diego for Comic-Con is genuinely uplifting.

The Tower – Modern Mermaid Movie – Cam Gigandet, Jack  Kilmer and Adam Sigal Interviews at Comic-Con 2024!

    Hey There Fantasy Enthusiasts,

I am excited to share a unique mermaid story, The Tower (2024), with you. Unlike the typical Disney archetype like Ariel, this mermaid has been imprisoned within a water tower in a charming Southern town for years, adding a captivating twist to the narrative.

San Diego Comic-Con 2024, an extraordinary event, is the perfect platform to unearth unique projects and creations that may need more mainstream attention, making it a perfect fit for the fantasy community.

2024-07-26 Jack Kilmer The Tower Press Room

I interviewed Jack Kilmer (Palo Alto),  Cam Gigandet (Twilight), who are two of the stars in the upcoming fantasy film, and Adam Sigal (Nandor Fodor and the Talking Mongoose) the writer and director of The Tower.  Unfortunately, TeamWHR couldn’t interview  Bella Thorne (Midnight Sun) in the Press Room as she was called away. The unique story line piqued my interest, as it has been a while since we have seen a movie with this kind of premise. The last mermaid-focused film that comes to mind is “Splash,” directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks, which featured Daryl Hannah as the mermaid.

Jack Kilmer, who plays Billy, an outsider and a ‘Goth kid’ in the film, shared his experience. He described the extensive preparation time provided by director Adam Sigal, including water training such as swimming, which was particularly demanding as it took place in a water tank built in a small town in Arkansas. He also highlighted the collaborative nature of the film and its specific tone, which reminds him of Joel Coen and Ethan Coen films, regarding the humor and quirkiness of his movie.

As an independent film, this movie exudes a unique charm that differentiates it from big-budget productions. This independence empowers the cast and director to take daring creative risks, leading to an exceptional outcome. Supporting independent films is not just a choice; it is a necessity, as they are the backbone of the film industry. It is worth noting that numerous modern movie stars kick-started their careers in indie films. So, let us come together and support this unique project.

2024-07-26 Cam Gigandet The Tower Press Room

I asked Jack about his favorite mythical creature, and he mentioned that vampires intrigue him. What struck me as ironic is that his co-star, Cam, was part of Twilight, one of the most famous vampire movies ever. During our discussion, Jack also expressed interest in potentially working on a Western project in the future. I found this particularly intriguing given his father, Val Kilmer‘s, renowned role in one of the most iconic and beloved Western films of the modern era, Tombstone. Val’s portrayal of Doc Holliday is considered legendary, and many have argued that he deserved an Oscar for that performance. Personally, it is one of my all-time favorite Westerns. It is a tough act to follow, but if anyone is up for the challenge, it would be Val’s son, Jack.

The next person I spoke to was Cam Gigandet, who plays the sheriff of this small town. He described his character as someone with a “fetish for power over people,” which vividly explains his role in the film. Cam had said that his character represents the dark side of masculinity, an unrepressed archetype. I have long held an appreciation for Cam and his body of work. While Twilight is not my cup of tea, I have enjoyed his other endeavors. During his brief period at our table, he was humorous and engaging. When I asked him about mythical creatures, the response I found most interesting was about Bigfoot. He explained that it is his favorite because his son is really into that particular mythos. I asked the actor if portraying a villain was as thrilling as actors often claim it to be. He explained that while playing “good guys” comes with specific rules to follow, embodying “bad guys” allows for unrestrained creativity. He even admitted to finding the good guy roles dull, stating that he bores himself when he takes on such characters. In one instance, he described feeling sorry for the character until the character spoke, revealing his character’s true, unfavorable nature.

2024-07-26 Adam Sigal The Tower Press Room
Adam Sigal – Image by Lori of WormholeRiders #TeamWHR

When Adam Sigal joined us, a fellow journalist inquired about his approach to managing the press for his film. As a director, I can relate to the sentiment that many of us are more at ease behind the camera than in front of it, and Adam expressed a similar sentiment. Despite being the film’s creator, speaking about it cannot be very comforting, as it involves discussing the project instead of letting the work speak for itself. At the convention, he mentioned they were in the final stages of post-production and getting the movie into theaters. He also hinted that it might be available on a streaming platform, but he did not specify which platform it would be available on.

2024-07-26. Jack Kilmer of The Tower

Adam elaborated on his film, explaining that Jack’s character is depicted as “an outsider and very marginalized, abused in many ways.” At the same time, Billy lacks the motivation to leave his small town. In the story, Billy encounters a mermaid (played by Bella Thorne) residing in the town’s water tower, intending to consume him. However, taking pity on Billy, the mermaid strikes up an unlikely friendship with him instead of fulfilling her initial plan. As their bond develops, Billy realizes that the mermaid is even more metaphorically trapped than he is, leading him to decide to assist her in escaping.

2024-07-26. Adam Sigal of The Tower

I asked Adam for his advice to gather insights on raising funds for independent films. He shared that he recently participated in a three-hour podcast, delving into this subject. According to Adam, successfully securing funds involves employing creative strategies and having unwavering faith in the excellence of your work. Furthermore, he stressed the significance of creating a remarkable product, comprehending the business aspects, and effectively persuading potential investors to back your project financially.

Adam mentioned that Bella had to speak her lines and had the challenging role of being a mermaid. Her character had to deal with a lot. He described how she had to wear a restrictive costume that limited her movement and float in a cold water tank while reciting her lines. Unfortunately, Bella could not talk to us about her experience making this film and her challenges while wearing the constraining costume.

2024-07-26. Bella Thorne of The Tower
Bella Thorne – Image by by Mat Hayward, courtesy Getty Images

Adam reminisced about his aspirations in youth, expressing a desire to become a novelist. He identified “Raising Arizona” as the pivotal film that seamlessly blended his passion for writing with the visual artistry of filmmaking. Furthermore, he cited David Lynch as a significant influence on his work, claiming to be the ultimate Lynch fan. This assertion led to a friendly challenge, as I, too, consider myself a fervent admirer of Lynch’s work, particularly his iconic creation, “Twin Peaks.”

I had a fantastic experience meeting the cast and director of The Tower. Learning more about the upcoming film and getting to know everyone involved was fascinating. Unfortunately, I have not heard or seen any trailers, and I could not attend the panel due to prior commitments, but I am intrigued by the film. I feel it will incorporate elements commonly seen in Lynch films, considering the director’s deep admiration for Lynch’s work.

I want to thank Gary Miereanu from GT Marmots/PR, Inc. for allowing me to interview the incredibly talented cast and director. This project will secure a place in a major studio for distribution in theaters or on various streaming platforms. Anticipate the release of this captivating film. I am eager to experience this one-of-a-kind movie soon!
